GHiT 0294: ChrisFix - Endurance Racer

GHiT 0294:  ChrisFix - Endurance Racer Most of you will know ChrisFix from his YouTube channel or from his presence on social media.  We have been subscribers to his YouTube channel prior to even trying our hand at racing.  Then last year, we were one of the first to see his video drop on his teams upcoming endurance racing adventure with the 24 Hours of Lemons team and it even happened to be at a race we were already registered for at NJMP Thunderbolt.  In this episode, we take way too much of Mr. Fix's time and cover his history and how his channel started and progressed.  We then cover the teams preparation and their race at NJMP.  As with all first time endurance racing teams, the first race has various highs and lows, and tons of surprises.  The preview to the NJMP race video has been released and the video detailing the race at NJMP will be released any day now.  Without giving away any spoilers, we are very happy to say that the ChrisFix team fully embraced the spirit of endurance racing and were a great group to race with and call friends.  We hope to see them all again on track soon! Best regards, Vicki, Jennifer, Alan, and Bill Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training Podcast and Garage Heroes In Training racing team drivers Highlights for this episode include: 1)  ChrisFix starts off with the traditional greeting and then we progress with a great summary of how he started and how his passion for helping others has led to the growth of his YouTube channel. 2)  Vicki (is quite the super fan and) goes through a short summary of the helpful videos and tools that ChrisFix has contributed to our team. 3)  How boxing led to the ChrisFix channel and what were some of the key points that led to the channel becoming what it is today. 4)  Chris and Jennifer commiserate about learning to drive a manual transmission late in life.   5)  How Chris and the team decided to enter the race, chose their car, and prepped for the race.  The plan was perfect, until it wasn't,  and then the real fun began. 6)  Since Chris had experience with his drift events, we also went into the differences he saw at his first endurance event. 7)  We also learn what Chris's impressions were during his first few laps on track with 120+ cars racing wheel to wheel. 8)  Chris gives a great summary of the entire race and some of the challenges that the team encountered during their weekend.  Now we really cannot wait for the video to be released, and we were there, lol. 9)  And then the entire paddock was there to help in any way that we could, as we do for every fellow racing team. 10)  We go over our traditional race review with Chris and what did they learn from the first racing weekend. 11)  Chris and his entire team are prepping the car and the team for their return to endurance racing.  Some of us could learn a lot from his teams approach to preparing their car for their next race.  We even offered a few tips that we have learned racing a similar car. DwD 0293: Getting Advanced in HPDE Too Quickly

DwD 0302:  Getting Advanced in HPDE Too Quickly On this issue of Dominating with Dawson, another listener submitted question leads to a discussion of getting advanced too quickly in HPDE.  While this may initially be flattering to one's ego, it may not be the best for the HPDE student's overall progress and development as a driver and can also lead to increased risk on track that does not directly lead to increased skill for the driver and/or other drivers on track. If you would be interested in helping grow our sport of high performance driving and our podcast: You can subscribe to our podcast on the podcast provider of your choice, including the Apple podcast app, Google music, Amazon, and YouTube etc. Also, if you could give our podcast a (5-star?) rating or even better, a podcast review, we would greatly appreciate it and it would help us to grow the passion and sport of high performance driving. GHIT 0292: Aaron Jongbloedt

GHIT 0292: Aaron Jongbloedt Aaron Jongbloedt from Jungle Motorsports joins us for this episode and we discuss all things racing, even ice boating.  Aaron seems to race in all series and all types of racing, we may even be able to make it to an ice racing event with him post plague.  Since he has such a wide range of experiences, we try to cover many of them as possible to show how each series and club can vary and each offers a different blend of driving and racing flavor.  The best thing you can do to start is try as many as you can and you will undoubtedly find one that matches your interests and maximizes the fun.  Plus an impromptu race car intervention, lol. volunteering as an avenue to start getting into racing and saving on the amount of money needed. Best regards, Vicki, Jennifer, Alan, and Bill Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training Podcast and Garage Heroes In Training racing team drivers Highlights for this episode include: 1)  Why he selected Spec Miata as a primary racing class and why he also includes and enjoys other types of racing.  2)  Aaron opens up the trap door to a quick summary of our racing cars and HPDE cars.  We need to get a bit more focus.  Time for a garage sale.  We may have a race car (or truck) for you, lol 3)  Vicki is not familiar with the track at Brainerd, but after our discussion it sounds like we will be soon, lol.  Top tip:  Also obey the team CFO. 4)  Some of the plusses and minuses of racing Spec Miata and how it has influenced hos racing approach and philosophy. 5)  Are there significant differences between instructing in autocross and instructing on a race track?  Also a discussion of the potential benefits of autocross before driving on track.  The skills are complimentary but the approach can be quite different in some ways. 6)  Aaron discusses his experience with almost all of the amateur endurance racing series and some of the new ones starting this season. 7)  As expected, we also discuss Spec Miata and Vicki is still intimidated with the concept of bump drafting.  This will likely change with time.  We have a NB Spec Miata car that needs a bit of love to race this season, but we are hopeful.  Bilstein shocks may be in our future. 8)  Why does Aaron seem to prefer arrive and drive (Seat Rentals) for endurance racing events.  Bill has always had concerns and questions that has prevented him from doing many arrive and drives.  We discuss several of them. 9)  Money saving tips and insight into what is required and what is avoidable to be competitive in the series, locally and nationally.  10)  Somehow we return to the topic of our cars.  It appears we are in the midst of an informal race car intervention.  lol.  (Probably long overdue) 11)  We also have a discussion of the storage required for a racing car and team.  Aaron is curious about the hangar that we use as our teams primary hub. 12)  How volunteering at events can minimize or potentially eliminate the cost of racing. 13)  How our "press" claim was received by a racing series.  (as you would expect) 14)  Just when you thought it was over, we get into a discussion of some of the local midwestern tracks that Aaron suggest we try.  As always, the answer is "yes"   To follow Aaron further:  Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/aaron.jongbloedt  His blog:  https://junglemotorsports.blogspot.com

DwD 0290: Entering a Race with Zero Experience

DwD 0290:  Entering a Race with Zero Experience On this issue of Dominating with Dawson, we go into a listeners question related to racing wheel to wheel on track with zero track experience.  While there are several opportunities to race with zero or little experience, we also go into several alternative paths that may be better choice for certain drivers.  As a bonus, Vicki, Jennifer, Bill, and Ben all recount some of the stories that came to mind from our first experiences racing on track with zero experience (since all four of us did this at our first events). DwD 0287: Increasing Grip - By the Driver - Part 1 (of probably many)

DwD 0287:  Increasing Grip - By the Driver - Part 1 On this issue of Dominating with Dawson, we start to try to go into a topic we heard on the (tremendous) Track Walking podcast when they had Paul Gerrard on as a guest and they were discussing several factors that a driver can influence the limit of grip on track.  The information, and especially the discussion, was so valuable we try to go into the topic and discuss it here.  We did not do a great job on this first attempt but the discussion is a good one and will hopefully serve to help you to think about the limit and how it can be affected by many factors that the driver influences, not just external factors and car/setup factors.  Also, Vicki's definition of being on the limit may be a simple yet descriptive evaluation of being at the limit for some of you.  It would probably help if Bill knew how to ask the actual question that would lead to the desired discussion.  This podcast thing isn't as easy as we had hoped, lol.  Still in training. GHIT 0286: Caroline Yun - Racing Driver Progression Stories

GHIT 0286:  Caroline Yun - Driver Progression Caroline Yun is an avid high performance driving enthusiast who has recently worked her way up through the Southern California NASA HPDE ladder system and has begun her wheel to wheel and time trial (TT) racing career in Honda Challenge.  She recently completed here first ever endurance race at Sonoma with the award winning Initial Dingus team.  As Caroline is a relatively new driver and racer, we thought we would discuss with her the experiences that she has had with working her way through her very common car progression/growth scenario, some of the plusses and minuses of racing with your partner, how it has been to be a female driver and the first driver in her family's perceptions of a lady race driver. Best regards, Vicki, Jennifer, Alan, and Bill Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training Podcast and Garage Heroes In Training racing team drivers Highlights for this episode are: 1)  It all started with a haunting.... 2)  We get a second opinion on the recent 24 Hours of Lemons race at Sonoma and since this was Caroline's first ever wheel to wheel racing, it is always exciting and surprising, especially when most of your experience is in HPDE events.  Caroline and her team even took home some hardware from the event. 3)  Caroline gives a great description of what she learned and how her fellow drivers were at the event. 4)  We go into the differences in front wheel drive and rear wheel drive vehicles and the pleasure of driving a variety of configurations. 5)  It is surprise time for Jaime and we end up making decisions for him for this season.  Where we end up was exciting and perhaps even more surprising. 6)  We learn how Caroline learned about track driving and several stories of her first impressions and tips for others looking to try their first event. 7)  Caroline's story of how important physical fitness is to driving in general and specifically for Caroline.  It even directly led to a new Mazda Miata MX-5. 8)  We share the plusses and minuses of racing with your significant other. 9)  Some of the potential complications of explaining that you are racing to your family and friend circle. 10)  We have a ton of fun (at Jamie's expense) talking brake pads. 11)  Caroline and Bill make plans for another racing event.  We love plans. GHIT 0285: Thank You Three Pedal Mafia

GHIT 0285:  Thank You Three Pedal Mafia We have four members of the Three Pedal Mafia come up to help Vicki and Bill work on the two Honda project cars for this winter.  We had originally planned a full cage party work weekend but had postponed it until February or until the Covid spike recedes.  What we were able to accomplish with their skills in such a short time was amazing.  They came, they saw, and they fixed.  Some day we hope to be able to perform at that level and repay them in some way. Best regards, Vicki, Jennifer, Alan, and Bill Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training Podcast and Garage Heroes In Training racing team drivers Highlights for this episode are: 1)  Details of the work plan for the invasion by the Three Pedal Mafia visit this past weekend including a surprise visit by Jim. 2)  Shut up we are having fun, lol. 3)  Driving skill review and training was an unexpected addition to the agenda for Miss Vicki. 4)  It was so very cold (for Pennsylvania) that we had to create a micro climate heating area for Miss Chrissy's feet. 5)  Why we had to replace the exhaust on the 1993 Honda Civic since we will be endurance racing the car this season.  Mental led the festivities on the exhaust project while we set up several of the other projects. 6)  Bill's planning failure.  And yes, this bothers him greatly. 7)  How the work went on the Honda Civic radiator and oil cooler installation and required fabrication. 8)  While Vicki and I were distracted, the Three Pedal Mafia assaulted the rusting carcass of the Honda Fit that we are looking to race in Grid Life's Sundae Cup at Lime Rock this year.  The Fit has yet to fully grow into the warm spot in Vicki's heart. 9)  We try to describe the depth of the love that Mental has for rust, but may not have fully achieved a full description. 10)  As always, Vicki loves to provide wonderful food and drinks as a thank you bribe to everyone who comes over and this weekends was no exception.  Bill added in some of the new thermal barrier coating for increasing the heat control of header and exhaust wraps and also creating a protective layer to protect the system from abrasion and water/chemical attack. 11)  Bill's engine disassembly is nearly complete for a replacement engine after being guided by Chris, Our Mr. Honda.  Now if anyone knows of any good machine shops in north east Pennsylvania, please let us know via our email at  [email protected].  12)  Vicki had a bit of a heel toe down shifting discussion with Chris and Chrissy to help her with her down shifting, especially at the end of the long straights.  Hopefully, she will get to drive and ride with an instructor this season, hopefully with Chris.  She also has some practice that she can start with ahead of that while driving on the street. 13)  Obviously much more to follow in coming weeks.  We need a few parts, some tools, and some machining assistance, but we will keep you posted as we learn.

GHIT 0283: Global MX-5 Cup with Todd Flis of Flis Performance

GHIT 0283:  Global MX-5 Cup with Todd Flis of Flis Performance Todd Flis has been involved with various levels of racing and now his company Flis Performance provides all of the cars for the series.  The Global MX-5 Cup is a great entry level series for professional racing.  The races are typically some of the most competitive races we see with margins of victory usually measured in a few thousandths of a second.  If you are looking to compare your skill in a pro level racing series, Todd's cars and the Global MX-5 Cup may be the series for you and the costs are exceptionally reasonable cost of entry, as well as the costs associated with a racing weekend, especially if you can manage to place in the top 3 for a year.  For instance, Mazda provides a first place prize of $250,000 each season. A link to the episode is: https://tinyurl.com/GlobalMX5Cup If you would like to help grow our sport and this podcast: You can subscribe to our podcast on the podcast provider of your choice, including the Apple podcast app, Google music, Amazon, and YouTube etc. Also, if you could give our podcast a (5-star?) rating or even better, a podcast review, we would greatly appreciate it and it would help us to grow the passion and sport of high performance driving. Best regards, Vicki, Jennifer, Alan, and Bill Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training Podcast and Garage Heroes In Training racing team drivers Highlights for this episode are: 1)  If you were ever interested in pro level racing, the Global MX-5 Cup may be the best series to balance low costs and high dependence on drivers skill and results in a series with some of the most competitive and close driving that we have seen in the past few years. 2)  How Flis Performance partnered with Mazda Motorsports to be the sole supplier for all the MX-5 Cup cars for the series. 3)  We describe what the normal weekend racing schedule looks like and in addition to racing with IMSA events, there will be two weekends where the series will be racing with NASCAR. 4)  What is involved in converting the  road car into the race prepped cup car that you see at the track.  It is definitely not just a pretty paint scheme, although we all know that always adds a few horsepower.  This results in lap times being several seconds improvement over a normal ND2 Miata. 5)  Why the cars have recently changed from an H-pattern shifter to a sequential transmission from SADEV.  6)  What is allowed to be tinkered with and adjusted within the series and what is not allowed to be altered. 7)  Todd was also kind enough to share his teams recommended fluid and consumables intervals as well as provided a starting point for a nut and bolt procedure for the cars. 8)  The level that the series goes to assure close racing and maximum dependence on driver performance, the series requires each race weekend to be raced with tired from the same batch of tires for all competitors. 9)  We also discuss with Todd what other racing series and levels the car would comply to and be competitive in, including the potential for use in endurance racing without any modifications. 10)  There are also several spots that can be awarded and allow the drivers to race within the series by providing scholarships of up to $100,000 for each driver. 11)  Todd's team also provides a complete MX-5 Cup Car each year to the Lemons of Love charity for a $125 entry.  So far we have not been lucky enough but we have contributed to the charity each year and will continue to do so.   To follow Scott and Flis Performance:   Flis Performance website:  http://flisperformance.com/  On Facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/flisperformance  On Instagram:  @flis.performance On YouTube at:  https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCKxGpoK-UtoHO4bBOhPoemQ    To Follow the series:  https://www.mx-5cup.com/

DwD 0282: Slow In Fast Out - Truth or Fiction

DwD 0282: Slow In Fast Out - Truth or Fiction On this issue of Dominating with Dawson, we discuss the often referred to concept of "slow in, fast out" for turns especially early in your high performance driving career.  As with most aspects of driving, this is a generic truth but not a 100% principle to carry with you for every situation and every turn.  The ability to understand when and where to follow and when and where to deviate from the general fundamentals is one of the more significant stages that a driver progresses through.  The discussion then goes into several other areas of "rules" and how/when to break them as you progress. DwD 0274:  Pedal Application and Release On this issue of Dominating with Dawson, we go into an aspect of the smooth is fast principle by going into the ways that each of us apply and release the throttle (or gas pedal) and the brake pedals.  To the surprise of no one, Ben is almost a 100% full hammer down while our ladies have a bit of a different practice at this point in their growth as drivers.  We then try to discuss when and where to apply and release the gas and brake and at what rate.  Again, one size may not fit all instances and all cars.  This seems to be a theme recently.  Lol. DwD 0273:  Double Apex Turns  On this issue of Dominating with Dawson, we cover two of the potential ways to approach several turn types that you will encounter on a track.  In longer turns/turns that require a large direction change like a 180 degree turn etc.  In several of these turns it may be faster to try to get through the turn with a classic late apex, but in some turns, it is often better to use a double apex approach or even a V-turn.  We try to discuss how to tell what you should do and several of the factors that would influence your choice.  Also, this is the first episode of DwD where we have Alex as a guest host. GHIT 0272: Tim Bagnall - Starting a New Endurance Racing Team

GHIT 0272:  Tim Bagnall - Starting a New Endurance Racing Team Tim Bagnall recently contacted us looking for getting started in endurance racing.  We thought this could be a great episode and an informal 11th episode in our how to get started series that we had earlier this year (2021).  Tim did most of the heavy lifting and asked us a ton of great questions and we answered as best we can at this point in our racing career.  We hope this episode can answer some of your questions if you are starting out and may help you with a second opinion if you are already racing.  It appears that we have come first circle since we were an early guest asking many of the same types of questions on the Everyone Racers podcast. A link to the episode is: https://tinyurl.com/TimBagnall You can subscribe to our podcast on the podcast provider of your choice, including the Apple podcast app, Google music, Amazon, and YouTube etc. Also, if you could give our podcast a (5-star?) rating or even better, a podcast review, we would greatly appreciate it and it would help us to grow the passion and sport of high performance driving. DwD 0271: DwD Storytime - The One About Fred Lobster Trying to Kill Ben and Ann

DwD 0268:  DwD Storytime - The One About Fred Lobster Trying to Kill Ben and Ann  On this issue of Dominating with Dawson, we have our second DwD Storytime episode where Ben recounts a recent track day event where he found a peculiarity in the "Fred Lobster" car that led to a weird issue where the steering and brakes would not respond.  If this was a new car, it would likely be a safety nanny programming issue, but since this car is far from new, the true root cause is still tbd.  However, the story is spectacular and the way that Ben dealt with the issue is something that we all can learn from.  You never know when something can break or behave in an unexpected manner on track and part of growing as a racing driver is being able to deal with an ill behaved car or another car that does something unexpected.
