Updated 12 days agoAn amateur endurance auto racing team hoping to show everyone that they too can participate in performance driving or racing. We are a relatively new team and learning right along with you. Our assumption is that you know very little to nothing about the sport but are interested in learning to drive better and eventually maybe even race in a local event of interest. We will cover all forms of racing and hope to be entertaining as well as educational.

GHIT 0268: The 2021 Escape from Moscow Lemons Rally - Day 2
It is day two of this years Escape from Moscow rally. We interrupt the festivities at a local Korean restaurant for an update from Jeff Stobbs and two of the teams on the rally. Todays events have been quite lemony. We go through some of the highlights of the days journey and how the teams are coping with the itinerary and we have several teams "succeeding" and gathering a ton of points. We will try to have updates each evening and hope to make you feel like you are part of the event. If you are keeping score at home, you are obviously doing it wrong. As a "bonus" we hear from Randy, and Alex as they are mid journey to return the Saab for further repairs back home. GHIT 0267: The 2021 Escape from Moscow Lemons Rally
If you ever wondered about what a Lemons Rally is, this series will cover the daily updates from this years Escape from Moscow rally. This year the rally started with a pre-event kickoff event at the local Circle Drive In theater and then the initial check in was at Montage Mountain ski resort. The end point for the rally is Road Atlanta in Brazleton, Georgia. The route is far from direct and some of these cars may not make it very far. We know of one for sure. We will try to have updates each evening and hope to make you feel like you are part of the event. DwD 0266: What to Do In A Turn
DwD 0265: What to Do In A Turn On this issue of Dominating with Dawson, we start off with a poor word choice and make the best of it. The real subject for this episode is what to pay attention to in a turn from pre-turn in all the way through track out. While there are many things to do and even more potential things to possibly do, we try to cover several of the fundamental things to do and look at during this complex series of events and inputs that form the key to high performance driving and racing. This has the biggest shocking revelation in the history of our Dominating with Dawson series. Did it surprise you as much as Bill? If you would be interested in helping grow our sport of high performance driving and our podcast: You can subscribe to our podcast on the podcast provider of your choice, including the Apple podcast app, Google music, Amazon, and YouTube etc. Also, if you could give our podcast a (5-star?) rating or even better, a podcast review, we would greatly appreciate it and it would help us to grow the passion and sport of high performance driving. GHIT 0265: Kyle Lockrow Upcoming Professional Racing Driver
GHIT 0265: Kyle Lockrow Upcoming Professional Racing Driver Kyle is a racing driver who has worked his way from a grassroots racing hobby to a professional career that has reached the NASCAR level. We had the opportunity to talk with him about his history and how amateur racing and especially amateur endurance racing has helped him progress and improve to the national level. His story is still being written, but after meeting him, we are huge fans and wish him nothing but the best. If that story isn't inspiring enough, he did this in spite of racing with (our good friends at) Race Bar A link to the episode is: https://tinyurl.com/KyleLockrow If you would like to help grow our sport and this podcast: You can subscribe to our podcast on the podcast provider of your choice, including the Apple podcast app, Google music, Amazon, and YouTube etc. Also, if you could give our podcast a (5-star?) rating or even better, a podcast review, we would greatly appreciate it and it would help us to grow the passion and sport of high performance driving. Best regards, Vicki, Jennifer, Alan, and Bill Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training Podcast and Garage Heroes In Training racing team drivers Highlights from this episode include: 1) We learn how Kyle has transitioned from amateur racing to being involved with NASCAR. Believe it or not, racing our junk race cars has actually helped Kyle progress. 2) What can you learn from amateur racing that transfers to higher levels and even the professional level. 3) Kyle asks us about what our training regimen is and surprisingly, we actually had an answer he liked. 4) Kyle's schedule for 2022 is still to be finalized, but it sounds like a very busy year for him. 5) How amateur endurance taught Kyle how to pass and be passed, as well as sharpens his ability to race other cars. 6) Several of the differences between professional racing and amateur racing. Surprisingly, some of the pro's can even learn a few things from our amateur teams that would help them on a race weekend. 7) Bill rambles through a question to try to quantify what the differences are between the driver pool in the pro series and the drivers in the amateur series drivers. Kyle makes the best of Bill's awkwardly worded question, lol. 8) And then Kyle actually wanted to do our fast and furious story time questions. We thank him for tolerating our little slice of insanity. 9) We lose count of how often we made fun of Race Bar. RACE BAR!!!!! DwD 0264: Improving Your Sense of Speed on Track
DwD 0264: Improving Your Sense of Speed on Track On this issue of Dominating with Dawson, we talk about ways to improve your sense of speed on a track. This includes the commonly referred to "butt dyno", but can also include several other ways and several other senses that the driver can use to determine their relative speed as well as their absolute speed. We are sure we left out a few, but please let us know if you use something else, especially as your primary feedback. GHIT 0263: Justin Barbry - Track Night In America
Do you know anyone who always wanted to drive on track but didn't think it was possible? Do you talk to people about driving on track and they don't understand but you know they would? Do you want a bigger racing budget? Perhaps the CFO of the house isn't involved in our sport (yet). Vicki and Bill have attended several Track Night In America events and had a blast. It is a great way to see if you or someone you know would like driving on track without a lot of prep, money, or time required. We have often said that autocross was the gateway drug to high performance driving, but what if you don't have a vendetta (yet) against small orange cones? This may be the best alternative we have found without jumping in with both feet to a full track weekend etc. We will need to have Justin on again to talk about his driving and racing exploits and hopefully subject him to our F&F Storytime segment. GHIT 0261: Our NJMP HPDE Event - Part Deux
GHIT 0261: Our NJMP HPDE Event - Part Deux We had a large group of drivers at the recent NASA Northeast HPDE event at NJMP's Lightning course. Since schedules did not fully coincide last week, we broke our group up into two different episodes. We start off with our usual goals for the weekend and cover how the event went. For this episode, we had Audra on who had never been to this track and was driving her 2017 BMW M2 for the weekend. Adam came to the event and was going to use Bill's M3 but due to mechanical issues, he had to use Vicki's 1999 turbo NB Miata for one of his stints. Elizabeth was trying her new to her SpecE30 on the track. Best regards, Vicki, Jennifer, Alan, and Bill Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training Podcast and Garage Heroes In Training racing team drivers Highlights from this episode include: 1) We start off with our personal goals for the event. Each event we try to make sure we each have at least one goal, but no more than 3 for the weekend. 2) Elizabeth had a bit of motion sickness after going out with Bill as a passenger. We may have found a cure for this, hopefully it will prevent motion sickness as well. We will test this again at our next few events. 3) Each level of the HPDE has a download session and some of the levels have classrooms during the weekend. We discuss the benefits of each and offer some suggestions for further improvement. 4) Highlights from the weekend and our traditional Good, Bad, and the Ugly 5) Adam advanced from HPDE 1 to HPDE 2. 6) Audra advanced from HPDE 1 to HPDE 2. 7) Vicki advanced from HPDE 2 to HPDE 3. 8) Elizabeth advanced from to HPDE 2. 9) We also shared a ton of Ahh Hah moments we had at this event. Its awesome to hear how everyone of us progressed. 10) Adam gave a good review of driving the E46 M3 vs the turbo NB Miata. 11)
DwD 0260: Over Slowing for a Turn and A Few Ways to Stop
DwD 0260: Over Slowing for a Turn and A Few Ways to Stop On this issue of Dominating with Dawson, we talk through the importance of the entry speed into a turn. One of the potential problems that comes in this area is learning how not to over slow for the turn. There is very little that can be done to make up for that lost time and speed. This can be the result of several different causes including trusting the tires or brakes, habits from street driving where you usually brake for every turn. This has recently become one of our team's bigger problems and one of the largest potential areas for improvement. This will likely be part one of a few. Paul Gerrard is the author of "Optimum Drive - The Roadmap to Driving Greatness" and he knows what driving greatness entails as he has competed at many of the highest levels in motorsports and coaches many drivers pursuing their dreams. In addition, he was the Stig for Top Gear USA. Resume aside, he has a way of breaking down the pursuit of greatness that applies to virtually all areas of our lives, including racing. When he agreed to come on the podcast it was not an issue of what we should ask him, it was what we needed to leave out. Hopefully this is the first of many episodes with Paul. This is great news for most of us. 2) A story about a bad tractor tire idea leads to a great Ayrton Senna story and then to a Jean-Claude Killy story. 3) How to develop a feel for what is fast and probably more importantly, how to improve your feel. 4) What is the key to becoming a great driver. It is a simple answer and the same answer for most aspects of your life. 5) Comparison on learning to be a racing driver at a racing school and a HPDE ladder system for a goal of professional racing 6) How vision skill issues can almost always be traced back to a lack of car control skills. 7) The importance of spending time on a skid pad as well as what to do when on the skid pad 8) Bill has read Paul's book 6 times but still gets things absolutely backwards. Time for a seventh lap. 9) We digress into couples therapy for a few minutes, lol. 10) How the key to improving your driving is the fundamentals. 11) We also go into why a car that is understeering is so difficult to work with and why a car that is below the limit does not help you as much to improve your driving as you would expect. 12) The best brake initiation practice and how it differs from street driving. 13) Potential fallacies of the smooth is fast mantra. We also talk through his upcoming preparation for his new 24 Hours of Lemons endurance race. In Jaime's last episode he was driving back his car after getting the cage installed so we had to see how his event went. Now we need to figure out how to get a photo of his (short) cross country exploits during the event. (Jaimie, please send us a shot or a link to where it is)(Christmas is coming you know, lol). We also start discussing some of the differences in racing a front wheel drive car vs a rear wheel drive platform. We try to appeal to his budget consciousness to upgrade to our brake pad of choice. 6) Our introduction to the anime show "Initial D". Time to do some homework. 7) We discuss the aspects of theming, tech inspection, and bribing the judges to help make up for experience and potential black flags. 8) Several tips on racing seat installation and making accommodations for a team of different sizes, heights and lengths. 9) In the past, we have had three drivers have claustrophobic experiences/panic attacks when getting strapped into the car. We discuss several things we have found to help if this happens. 10) Critical spares and parts to bring tot he track with you and how to decide what to bring and what not to bring. We have a bit of a philosophy for each of our cars that dictates what we bring to an event. 11) Bunches of little tips and tricks for detailing the last few percent of your car. 12) We start planning a 2022 meetup and race. Perhaps a honeymoon race? 13)
DwD 0258: Overdriving vs Underdriving
On this issue of Dominating with Dawson, we talk about the two types of drivers we have on our team. Some of us approach track driving by overdriving the car and then backing down. Others of us approach the limit gradually working up to the limit. Both have their merits, but it is valuable to know what your default is and how to maximize your specific predilections, especially as an instructor or team captain. In this episode, we go into various indications of both under and over driving at a variety points across each lap. GHIT 0257: Joe Adams from Blackstone Laboratories and Host of the Slick Talk Podcast
Joe Adams joins us for an in depth discussion of all the introductory questions that we had related to oil and what their analysis can reveal within your car's engine. We start with what the oil is actually doing within your engine and how through use it can indicate either the oil degrading or the degradation of individual engine components. We also try to cover the individual components used within the oil formulations and what their function is. After this episode, we know that we learned a few things about oil and how to save some money (for more track time) and reveal potential issues we may be having within our cars before they become very expensive or perhaps even catastrophic. The testing can often result in cost savings by optimizing your oil change interval to your usage. 3) What other fluids besides engine oil that can be tested by Blackstone, as well as how to take the sample and send it in for testing. 4) We cover what the Blackstone Laboratories tests are and how their test team's test report will help you to interpret the information easily and quickly. 5) How best to take the sample and what liquids Blackstone Laboratories is capable of testing. 6) What to look for in your fluids and how to best make emergency substitutions or substitutions for racing applications. 7) Synthetic vs conventional oils. Is the (former) dinosaur better or worse. Sorry Bill sounds like he is talking into a paper towel roll for most of the episode. He borrowed it from Mental (or the microphone disconnected during the recording)
GHIT 0256: Our NJMP Lightning HPDE - November 2021
Part 1 of 2 On this episode, we cover our latest HPDE event at NJMP's Lightning track with NASA Northeast. The track and the weather was a bit cold but we had a great time and a large groups of drivers and cars. We even had all 4 levels of the HPDE groups covered with at least one driver in each. To make things even better, Jen and Vicki's sister Debbie was driving in her first event and first time ever on track. A quick rundown of who and in what is: HPDE 1 Drivers: Debbie in our 2019 ND Miata Audra in her 2017 M2 BMW Adam in our 2004 M3 BMW (E46 for you cool kids) HPDE 2 Drivers: Elizabeth in her new to her Spec E30 for the first time on track Jennifer in our 2019 ND Miata Vicki in her freshly street tuned 1999 turbo NB Miata HPDE 4 and Instructing: Bill shared the 2004 M3 with Adam Hyperdrive: Lisa went out in Audra's M2 The event was fantastic and everyone improved greatly after the two days. Notably, we had several drivers advance in the NASA HPDE ladder: Adam was advanced into HPDE 2 after the first session Audra advanced into HPDE 2 and Vicki advanced into HPDE 3 for the first time. Best regards, Vicki, Jennifer, Alan, and Bill Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training Podcast and Garage Heroes In Training racing team drivers Highlights Include: 1) Both Lisa and Debbie were first time track drivers this weekend and it can be eye opening to remind everyone of what it was like the first time on track. 2) We cover our personal goals for every driver going into the event and we see how everyone did after both days. (short summary is awesome) 3) Car prep stories were relatively mild this time until they weren't on our first stint Saturday morning. 4) What it was like for Debbie at her first track event and first time ever at a track. 5) Did we hook any new drivers? Well we did start planning a trip in July to another HPDE event, lol. 6) Lisa was able to review what the Hyperdrive event is for everyone and how it went for her on Sunday. She also compared driving on a track to her autocross event experience. 7) Did Jennifer (and Vicki) conquer their habit of lifting off the throttle midway on the long straights? 8) How did the drills Ross Bentley presented to them help? 9) We find a new issue for Vicki to work on in coming events and it may apply to your driving as well. 10) Our traditional Good, Bad, and the Ugly. 11) We may have found a solution to passengers who get motion sickness. It worked once so far. More testing to follow. Vicki really needs to conquer this if her long term goal is to be an instructor. 12) What happened that led to Bill going off track in turn 5 in the M3. Luckily we were able to fix the tire issue and get the car back on the track. 13) We end with a review of our winter challenge with 4 other racing podcast hosts and several listeners. We are looking to drop at least 25 pounds and also grow as drivers through reading at least one book per month and also practicing our driving by karting or iRacing. Open to everyone so come on in and if you complete the challenge, you will be eligible for bunch of swag from the 5 podcasts. GHIT 0254: New High Performance Driver Kim Coffey
Kim Coffey has been a car girl from a very young age and has recently discovered her passion for driving her car at the limit. It all started with a Supra Sunday with NASA and once the hook was set, she was off. She loves and drives her 2020 Toyota Supra for HPDE events, autocrosses and has even started Sim racing. If that wasn't enough, she often takes her lunch at a local go kart track. We thought we would go over where she is this early in her driving journey and we are looking forward to seeing where she goes and what she decides to pursue in her high performance driving future. There were some storm induced connection issues during the middle few minutes but most were easily editable and it resolved pretty quickly. Kim provides some insightful comment on what she was able to learn from the classroom downloads at ACC. 5) Kim gives some great tips for someone going to their first HPDE to maximize their learning and improving their driving as quickly as possible.
DwD 0253: Introduction to Optimizing Your Tire Pressure
On this issue of Dominating with Dawson, we talk through the importance of optimizing the pressure in your tires. No doubt this is of great importance to the performance of the tire as well as affecting the wear characteristics of the tire. We go through what you should try to target and several methods that can be used to determine the optimum tire pressure. Each method is a balance of cost, ease, and accuracy. There is no doubt we will revisit this topic again, probably more than once. GHIT 0252: Tom Suddard from Grassroots Motorsports Magazine
Tom Suddard is the Director of Marketing and Digital Assets at GRM. Tom's first visit to our podcast was with zero notice and was at the invitation of Nine Live Racing's Johnny C on episode #209 when we had our first episode on Aero. In spite of this, Tom decided to put up with us again in what we hope will be a long list of bad decisions in the future. What do you ask of a prolific supplier of articles and videos aimed at helping grass roots racers and drivers improve? Well, we choose to go into a great article that Tom wrote about "10 Ways to Keep Your Racing Effort Disciplined" which is a great article and will help almost everyone to improve a bit easier and more cheaply. We also covered a few other areas and will provide a bunch of links at the end of these notes for even more information. We have a ton more questions for Tom and hope to have him on again, as many times as he will tolerate us. Tom gave so many great tips during this episode, Bill is still taking notes. Please subscribe to GRM to learn a ton and support the grassroots racing community. It is the best money we have spent in racing. GHIT 0250: Ross Bentley Coaches Our Team
Did you ever wonder what a driving coach does for their driver? We were always curious. Ross Bentley was kind enough to show us the start of the process. Ross Bentley was kind enough to continue our tradition of having him on as a guest to help us celebrate every 50 episode anniversary. And as long as he keeps saying yes, we will keep asking him, lol. For this episode, Ross was kind enough to offer to help coach Vicki and Jennifer. While the exact recommendations may vary between the two ladies, the process that Ross follows could be applied to your own racing/driving and the suggestions Ross makes may be able to help you specifically as well. One thing that we learned during this episode was that we really want to work with Ross as a coach even more now after seeing what he is able to do in this short period of time. We cannot remember a time where Jennifer and Vicki were more excited to get back to the track and try out Ross's suggestions. As always, when we have Ross Bentley on, this is a good one and we are adding it to our can't miss episode collection. If you would like to help grow the sport of high performance racing and our podcast, you can subscribe to our podcast on the podcast provider of your choice, including the Apple podcast app, Google music, Amazon, and YouTube etc. Also, if you could give our podcast a (5-star?) rating or even better, a podcast review, we would greatly appreciate it and it would help us to grow the passion and sport of high performance driving. Best regards, Vicki, Jennifer, Alan, and Bill Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training Podcast and Garage Heroes In Training racing team drivers Highlights from this episode include: 1) Ross starts off with what tracks do we like and why. We end up talking a good bit of this episode about Mid Ohio, especially in the wet. 2) What are the first three questions that Ross asks nearly every student he works with? 3) Ross comes up with some great practice techniques that Jennifer and Vicki (and you) can do while driving to break some bad habits and train preferred habits away from the track to improve your on track performance. 4) We learn the importance of even minor improvements and how then can multiply over a lap or a stint and create some very large improvements in the lap time results. 5) Looking for alternatives to braking later or harder? 6) Ross also works with Vicki on several ways to help her (and you) stop over slowing for a turn 7) We also go over goals and ways of handling pressure and using pressure to improve. 8) How being too polite on a track can actually become unsafe 9) Ross also works with what the biggest ahh hah moments were for Jennifer and Vicki this year. 10) We love drills to try, especially at an HPDE or an open track day. Ross gave us some new ones to try. And we will at our next event. We will report back after or NJMP event in early November. 11) After the last podcast with Ross, we missed one of the listener questions related to breaking down a turn backwards. DwD 0249: Fast Hands vs Slow Hands
In this issue of Dominating with Dawson, we discuss the debate between fast hands and slow hands. The natural tendency of each driver varies, often by how they grew up. Go karters and autocrossers usually have a tendency to have faster hands. Ben discusses with us the usefulness of both and what we think of as the "proper" hand speed. Also, Ben stakes a very strong claim in the debate between Eric Clapton and Eddie van Halen. GHIT 0248: The HPDE Junkie Himself Dave Peters
Dave Peters started the HPDE Junkie website to help everyone to find a local HPDE track day by compiling every HPDE event across the United States at every track with every organization. He is an HPDE Junkie himself and has even had Ben Dawson as his coach early in his driving progression. The focus of this episode is on what an HPDE is and how to go about finding and preparing for a High Performance Driving Education Event, especially if this is new to you or a friend. It is a great conversation about what to do for a track day and what not to do. Further proof that anyone can go on track if they want to try high performance driving on a track. DwD 0247: We finally answer what is Lift Off Oversteer
On this issue of Dominating with Dawson, we are finally able to discuss what lift off oversteer is thanks to a recent article that Bill found on the internet. GHIT 0246: Our Autobahn Country Club HPDE 2021
GHIT 0246: Our Autobahn Country Club HPDE 2021 Vicki and Bill attended the recent NASA Great Lakes HPDE at the Autobahn Country Club. It was the first time Vicki was on this track and she was in the HPDE 2 run group. Bill was in HPDE 4 and instructed a HPDE 1 student Saturday and Sunday. Bill also completed his MSF Level 2 instructor in car training on Friday and had a great time with the drills and the mentors. Luckily, the track is relatively flat and fairly easy to learn. Vicki's favorite section was the 8-9-10 turn complex. 3) We both shared the 2019 Mazda Miata (ND2) and Vicki was able to settle into the new track car. We also go over her impressions of the Garmin Catalyst which is especially useful at Autobahn since the track is relatively short and you get a lot of laps in each session. 4) Our car prep issues with the 2004 BMW M3 (E46) were quite a story. We thought we had our prep processes under control but found something else we can do wrong. And then it snowballed, lol. 5) Lifting on the long straightaways? Vicki had that problem. Emphasis on "had". 6) How did the MSF Level 2 evaluation go for Bill? 7) What trailer does Vicki envy? ALOT. 8) Vicki was unintentionally "that guy". Or was she? You can be the judge. 9) We also cover how Vicki's Instructor (Brandon) did vs the Garmin Catalyst? (Quite well) 10) Vicki (and Bill) had some major accomplishments during the weekend. Any guesses? 11) Some of the issues Bill had instructing at the event. 12) TREC Racing. Ever heard of it? We discuss it and we finally have a plan for this next season.
