00:00
Welcome to the PILOP.
00:24
That was my cartoon character landing at the bottom of an Acme branded canyon.
00:41
Mine was shooting out of a canyon, but not out of a canyon.
00:47
Oh, no, shooting out of a canyon into the canyon, out of a canyon through the canyon.
00:55
I slit the sheet of the sheet.
00:56
I slit underneath the sheet.
00:58
Listen, lady with your fast tongue.
01:05
It's actually Sunday.
01:06
Well, for us, it's Sunday.
01:08
We're talking to you from the past.
01:10
But you're getting it.
01:11
Yeah, you're getting it in the future.
01:13
You're in the future.
01:14
This is a future-made episode.
01:18
Which is good, because we've got some futuristic-looking cars of the past.
01:23
We're back with Beatnik, oh, go ahead.
01:27
We're back with Odd Rod's part three, because we picked six each.
01:32
And it turns out we talked about them so much we couldn't get through them all in
01:36
I'm pretty pleased with that in the sense that, like, if I were going to talk about
01:40
anything, Megacycle was great.
01:42
Yeah, Megacycle was really cool.
01:44
And oh, that's something I wanted to reiterate.
01:46
I said it looked like a fly, but what I meant was it looked like a dragonfly.
01:52
Also, I came to think that the quarter panels look like surfboards.
01:55
And I was like, I didn't really say anything about the tail lights in the ends of the
02:00
quarters that look like surfboards.
02:02
Oh, yeah, they did kind of.
02:08
I was like, I can't believe that I kind of just, I just saw a photo and I was
02:10
like, I didn't talk about that at all.
02:12
Yeah, we didn't talk about the rear at all.
02:14
And the fact that it's like a two tone, like it's a flip.
02:16
It's like a dark blue on one side and a light blue on another half.
02:20
Oh, I didn't even notice that.
02:23
It's very subtle and kind of funny.
02:24
And like, I don't think we even described that.
02:27
Well, we've missed some stuff.
02:28
If you all know, just go back to the show notes and you can see it because then
02:31
you can describe it for yourself.
02:34
So we had a nice write in.
02:36
We got a couple of nice writing.
02:38
Mateo wrote in to talk about how in his childhood his grandfather took into
02:42
shows and his grandpa knew a lot of customizers and stuff, but his grandpa worked
02:45
on MGs and, you know, he said he grew up like watching Nick at night.
02:49
I did too with my grandparents.
02:52
And I think what Mateo was saying was he has a sort of a love for the old
02:55
world and old stuff.
02:57
And I of course love hanging out with my grandfather who was a knowledgeable
03:01
I get that feeling.
03:03
He also wrote to say that was part of why he was enjoying our odd rod
03:08
episodes and stuff about Jean, the Jean episode, but that he enjoys the podcast and enjoys
03:16
And that was so nice to say.
03:19
It was a very nice message.
03:20
I really appreciate it.
03:21
Again, it's cool that anybody's listening at all.
03:25
So because you don't have to.
03:28
You chose to appreciate that.
03:30
Also Heidi commended the choice of the mega cycle.
03:33
Oh, I haven't talked to Heidi for a long time.
03:40
And yeah, I expect it is such, you know, if any of y'all don't know who Heidi is, a.k.a.
03:46
a cheeky hand on Instagram, she makes these really wonderful flaked badges.
03:53
She makes these really wonderful flaked badges for your rides, emblems, emblems.
03:58
And you deliver the name and Heidi includes the design of the emblem for you.
04:04
That's a part of the product.
04:05
And then makes these layered acrylic emblems and signage and display.
04:11
It's like whether you're saying something's purely functional or purely art, you know,
04:15
that these are both.
04:16
So anyway, Heidi is a cool customizer in that regard.
04:20
So yeah, check out her stuff.
04:22
It was good to hear from her friend of the pod, Heidi, cheeky hand.
04:27
And we also heard from Greece girl.
04:39
I think you got it.
04:40
I think that was right.
04:45
She just said that she really liked the last episode.
04:48
We really appreciate that, Kristen.
04:50
And if you all don't know who that is, check out her stuff.
04:52
She's working on a Studebaker right now, I believe.
04:55
Or she has many Studebakers.
04:57
I think her and her husband live in Texas and have like an airplane hangar or something.
05:01
One of my picks sort of involves a Studebaker.
05:10
So again, we were talking about non-production bodies, but it's got some Studebaker style.
05:14
So I kind of ties in.
05:18
We need to get into it because we have been so passionate about these picks and these
05:23
cars that last time we got one car each.
05:27
And then we just kind of cut it short there because it just, I don't want to short
05:30
these, but this next car, odd rod, because I think it's more truck than car is a deep
05:41
And I think probably a lot of people out there, but heavy inspiration.
05:46
The ice truck from Dan Woods.
05:50
Now Emily says that because she has to feign surprise.
05:54
We've talked about this thing for weeks.
05:56
No, also I'm excited about it.
05:59
Is there any surprise over here?
06:00
Well, it's okay if you do, but we've talked about it a lot.
06:03
We have talked about it a lot.
06:05
So what the ice truck is, is a low slung, early body on formula car inspired or Indy car inspired
06:18
So this is something that Rizzo and I kind of laughed about, like that it's like a straight
06:23
axle in the front and then a jagged rear end with like independent rear suspension
06:28
It's kind of funny.
06:32
But stylistically, it's a critical choice, but it does some things.
06:36
So we're talking about a C cab on a really low to the ground chassis and the C cab shape,
06:44
if you're not familiar with it is like a, consider like a 20s beer truck shape.
06:49
Like a lot of times wood bodies.
06:53
I'm not the definitive source on this, but the C cab is not really like a body style that
07:04
I feel like they made them out of, you know, a lot of them are wood.
07:08
The true like, you know, antique C cab.
07:10
There's no particularly like stamped C cab.
07:14
Like how old are they?
07:15
Like, you know, like 20s.
07:21
And back in the day.
07:23
So yeah, there's like a lot of a lot of them are wood because they're trucks and they're
07:27
special built, but the C cab is just like, it's open like a carriage so the driver can
07:32
get in and out quickly and or easily, you know, and got to open up that door for the
07:40
So imagine a C shape, a Pacman big C shape is the opening for the cab.
07:44
And then it tapers back and goes into a box shape for hauling stuff.
07:49
And that is true for a traditional C cab.
07:51
Well, you know, again, like we'd say like fire truck, beer truck kind of thing.
07:55
And then this one is like, we're talking about it's down to the ground and it's very
08:00
dune buggy trike-esque.
08:02
It's 100 inches wide and 106 inch wheelbase.
08:06
But then it's got this wild custom.
08:11
It's 100 inches wide and 106 inch wide.
08:14
So it's almost a little square.
08:17
It's almost a big square.
08:19
That's why Dan Wood said it's like the world's, you know, fastest go cart because it's like
08:25
He's like, you can't flip it over.
08:26
Now, does that with include the wheels?
08:33
They do stick out a lot.
08:39
It's got a lot of attitude.
08:44
And what's really, I think sort of brings it back to earth is that it has the, what that
08:52
looks like just a stock Model T windshield.
08:54
So it's like, it's got a Model T cowl.
08:57
I'm pretty sure that that's also how uncertainty was started was just a Model T cowl and he
09:03
built the rest of the body.
09:04
And so this is like a Model T cowl.
09:07
And then the rest of it is just hand formed, which is kind of just how any C cab gets
09:13
There's so many versions of C cabs.
09:15
Anybody's welcome to write me in and say like, hey, no, somebody made this one to find, you
09:21
know, whatever, if there's more on it than I'm missing, but I don't think there's a
09:24
lot of 10 ones either.
09:25
These are, this is a fiberglass body.
09:27
Like it's a, you know, one off body.
09:30
You know, Dan Woods previous cars, the milk truck was also a C cab, but a very
09:35
different shape skirted over the back tires.
09:37
So it's like kind of a quote unquote fender flare, but not nearly as aggressive as
09:45
No, this is real aggressive.
09:46
And this rod and custom feature with Newton's artwork is just absolutely futuristic
09:57
even to this moment.
10:00
It's not outdated to me.
10:02
Oh, these aren't photos of it.
10:04
No, that's that's the illustration.
10:08
Now, if you, I don't know if you're viewing it on like custom Rama or something, but I
10:14
And then they're in that article, they included some like very, you know, towards
10:21
completion pictures of the ice truck.
10:22
So it like wasn't, they weren't just teasing wild renderings.
10:28
So imagine this like, okay, it's a C cab and it's very truck like, right?
10:32
It wasn't, it did have a feature in truck and later, I think.
10:35
And it tapers to the back, but also you're sitting, the seats are very laid
10:44
back and you're basically sitting against the independent rear suspension.
10:49
Gosh, because it almost looks like you could fit somebody in the back.
10:53
So it's got like a little.
10:54
But you can't really.
10:55
It's a, it's probably like a little package tray, you know, like a little
10:58
shelf because the independent rear suspension is about the height of your
11:02
shoulders, the way the seats are laid back in there.
11:04
You're sunk into this thing.
11:07
But in model T fashion, the steering wheel comes straight up from the floor 90
11:12
degrees to the floor.
11:14
Well, how are you going to reach it then?
11:16
Well, you sit around it.
11:17
It's in between your legs.
11:18
Oh, because it comes back.
11:21
It's not by the cowl.
11:24
It's in the middle of the seat.
11:26
Comes up right out of the seat.
11:28
It's like, it's in your nuts.
11:33
And does it have like three pillars that it comes out of three?
11:37
Like, like a cone shape.
11:40
Dan Woods goes to the doctor and they're like, what's with the steering wheel
11:46
And he says, it's driving me nuts.
11:49
Just come up with that just now.
11:53
It's a pirate joke.
11:55
I don't know why it's a, you know, the pirates got the steering wheel
12:00
And then they say, what's with the steering wheel?
12:07
Dad jokes over there.
12:09
The interior looks plush.
12:12
It's 70s Van Plush.
12:13
It's really pretty.
12:15
It's like an ice blue.
12:16
And it's an ice blue on the outside.
12:18
It looks like, hence the name, ice truck.
12:20
That's probably maybe not.
12:22
I would say that's there.
12:23
And then it's got gold lettering and gold details.
12:27
It's got some gold striping around there.
12:29
It has a silver leaf.
12:33
Then it has a brass.
12:36
The radiator's brass.
12:38
Oh, the ice looks like it's the fritz.
12:41
The photo with fritz and just a body.
12:43
If you're on custom drama looking at it.
12:45
Again, we're using custom drama.com as research material
12:48
because it's a excellent resource.
12:50
And we'll put a link to that in the show notes.
12:54
Y'all know I love a link to the show notes.
12:58
Jump on custom drama, support them.
13:00
It's a great archive of very cool stuff.
13:03
The back of it is incredible.
13:05
Just the way it's, what is that shape?
13:08
Well, I guess trapezoidal.
13:12
It's got six sides.
13:15
And then it's pushed out in the center across the center axis.
13:25
That makes it like a portal.
13:27
It does look like a portal.
13:28
And then the fender flares are super cool, but there's like just straight lines clearing
13:32
the suspension and that gives for a really aggressive square fender opening.
13:37
And then the radius rods that go into the little sockets up in the body.
13:46
I love that little detail.
13:49
It's just like, it's just enough for everything.
13:53
It's like mechanical cars.
13:57
Which is what's so cool about like uncertainty.
14:00
And like uncertainty, he talked about economy of pieces, you know, having the right balance
14:04
and things being as simple as possible.
14:10
And this has, I mean, I'm not, you know, duh, like Newt is a design master.
14:16
Here comes the Ed Newt again.
14:19
Designed the little red record.
14:21
Yeah, Dan Woods was working for Ed Big Daddy Roth and they were working on Druid Princess,
14:26
which is another one that I love.
14:27
It's not in my picks for this, but it is an inspiration.
14:33
So Dan also like Dan made his own widened wire wheels.
14:38
He would buy whole Buick cars just to cut the wheels and like add another wide section
14:47
I mean, he's like, these are like 12 inch wheels.
14:49
But I think he went way beyond that.
14:51
I think 22 at some point he talked about, I don't know, maybe I'm tripping, but.
14:55
Oh, you're talking about wheels for the car, not wire wheels that you would use to.
15:03
No, like low rider wires, you know, Buick's had them and he would buy a whole car just
15:08
for the wheels and then scrap the car.
15:10
He said he dragged lots of them to the yard.
15:13
But he would, he would go to this machine shop and they would, they'd been, you
15:17
know, machine the faces and.
15:19
And what would that do to him?
15:20
Well, if you, if you put the outside, if you put it inside the jaws of the lathe, right,
15:25
the rim is touching.
15:28
So if you cut the weld, like if you'd cut the wheel off rough, just they are all welded
15:33
in the center, typically steel wheels.
15:36
And then then you leave some of the weld there and some of the old meat that's
15:40
on the opposite side of it.
15:42
And then you, you take the lathe and cut it.
15:44
Well, when you do that, it's going to be perpendicular to the outside edge.
15:48
If the outside edge is seated in the jaws.
15:53
So you get, you wind up eats the way to true it.
15:56
And then you just have it balanced afterwards.
15:59
You got a big sick ass wheel.
16:00
Oh, and then somebody, he went to a shop and like bug the guy.
16:04
It was a wheel shop.
16:05
And he bugged him to teach him how to lace wheels.
16:08
And he was, you know, just a youngster.
16:09
And I think that's an important thing to think about.
16:12
If you're someone that wants to like learn a trade, it does go a lot
16:15
easier when you're a kid and you're like, I'd like to learn that.
16:17
People will feed knowledge to you.
16:21
But if you're a little older, they're more apt to be like, hmm.
16:24
What do you do if you're older?
16:28
No, you know, you just might have to pay somebody or something.
16:34
I mean, you know, you can always pay for a lesson here or there.
16:38
I mean, where, where someone's kind of trade.
16:41
If you have a skill where someone's willing to teach it or the truth
16:44
part, you know, just prove it.
16:45
You have to prove it and show up somewhere.
16:47
You know, that's, you can get into a thing like that by sleeping on
16:51
You know, you can be like, well, I'm not leaving.
16:53
So you're going to have to put a broom in my hand.
16:59
But I do think, you know, when you're younger, it's, I just, okay.
17:03
So I just had a cool experience this week, a place that rewinds
17:07
I said, if I wanted to learn about winding, is there a book
17:11
that you would recommend?
17:12
And he was like, yes, I'll go get it.
17:16
I can't give you this one because my father gave it to me.
17:19
And I was like, okay.
17:20
And he went upstairs.
17:21
He came back down and said, it must be at home.
17:23
But I was like, well, maybe you'd send me a picture of it.
17:25
And he was like, sure, I will.
17:27
The next day, his mother called me and said, hi, we have a
17:31
book for you if you come by.
17:34
And they gave me a brand new copy of the same book.
17:38
And he taped his business card in the front of it because
17:40
I was going to ask him to write his name in it for me.
17:42
You know, like, yeah.
17:44
So, you know, it's really special when people pass down
17:47
knowledge like that.
17:49
And like when you like, it's like when you're like, now for
17:51
me, I'm like, wow, I'm like, might be snagging another
17:54
mentor here to learn some stuff from.
17:57
And he was like, you know, he's like, if you picked up
18:00
on that, he's like all these, all these electric cars
18:04
or electric motors, he's like, you could do pretty good.
18:08
He had just explained to me how much sort of like wire
18:12
he had left town, but he also showed me his 100 year
18:16
And he said they were at a scrapyard in Seattle.
18:19
This lathe was flipped over in the mud.
18:23
I was like, can I see your lathe?
18:25
And it's like the bell end on the motor was cracked.
18:27
It looks like a 75 horsepower motor.
18:31
It might be lower just because older motors are
18:33
huge, but he said, yeah, they had, they
18:36
were going to scrap it.
18:37
And then his father said, I'll give you $500
18:42
And he said, how much to deliver it down to our shop?
18:45
And they said like $300 or it's free.
18:50
I think they said free.
18:52
But then they ripped their garage door off when
18:54
they delivered it, so they gave him the lathe in
18:58
But anyway, he fired it up for me.
19:04
I mean, it's like, it's like the monarch that we
19:05
have that's in the basement.
19:07
But it's not as long of a bed, but it's a
19:12
I love all that stuff.
19:14
So that's a big part of Dan Wood's story is that
19:18
he's like, he went to a radiator shop and he
19:20
learned how to make those radiators.
19:22
Like those big wild radiators on his cars are
19:24
like, they're functional and he made them.
19:29
Like he hung around and people would teach
19:31
And like he talks about in that thing that's
19:33
sort of like granted to young people where he's
19:35
like, we put the wheels together and putting
19:38
the welds so close to the spokes was a real
19:40
task grinding all of the weld away.
19:44
And he's like, but again, it only cost me my
19:48
You know, and then figuring out how to chrome
19:51
And he talks about it.
19:52
And he's like, you know, eventually I had a
19:54
wheel business for a while.
19:55
Like he has a picture of his business card
19:58
He posted stuff on his Instagram and shares
20:02
Oh, that is really cool.
20:05
And he worked for Ed Roth and like it's
20:06
always says blue skies.
20:07
But in the building of the ice truck, he
20:09
got drafted to Vietnam.
20:16
I've read some of his stories about it.
20:17
It's pretty, the stuff he posts on his
20:18
Instagram is very cool.
20:19
It's really remarkable that he was able
20:21
to come back and just get right back
20:26
He always signs off blue skies always.
20:27
You know, so he's a good, good positive
20:30
And he posted a photo of Gene before he
20:32
passed and was, they were at Grand
20:36
And he was talking about how cool it was
20:38
to just sort of even be in that scene.
20:40
And I thought that was really neat.
20:42
But yeah, I mean, you know, I've seen it
20:44
at Galpin and it's really cool.
20:46
I didn't know what it or the milk truck
20:48
were or the pizza wagon when I saw them.
20:51
I think I've maybe a little bit because
20:53
you know, I've always loved zingers
20:55
and stuff like that.
20:56
I don't think I was totally familiar,
20:57
but I was really like, wow, these are
21:00
I mean, I liked, I also like at Galpin
21:02
they've got Ed's Rotar and I really
21:04
liked the Rotar it hovers a little bit.
21:07
I don't know that car.
21:08
I was a little more focused probably on
21:09
the big daddy cars and little red
21:13
The Pink Panther car is sick.
21:14
But yeah, those things are nuts,
21:15
the Dan Woods cars.
21:17
And the ice truck is just like that blue
21:20
A little bit of the backstory of the car.
21:22
And I should wrap it up.
21:23
I don't want to take too long.
21:24
But Dan showed the car
21:28
and some people loved it
21:30
and some people just thought it was
21:32
like a wacky show car.
21:34
And then other people thought it was
21:36
And a young guy working for
21:40
really took notice of the car
21:41
and felt like early bodies
21:43
on, you know, high tech race
21:45
suspension was like it.
21:46
And that was Boyd Cottington.
21:48
And so that's kind of like leads into
21:49
the billet rod movement.
21:50
Like this is, this is all on customer
21:53
This is their writing.
21:55
But I'm just, I'm telling you,
21:56
go read the article.
21:57
Like it's a good article and support
21:58
their website and stuff.
22:01
what year was it built?
22:04
But it was started in 67, right?
22:06
I think quite a bit was done in 67
22:08
when that article came out
22:09
and that rod and custom article came out.
22:11
And then Vietnam happened between them.
22:14
And what happened is that
22:16
the truck kind of sat
22:17
and I think people liked it.
22:19
But I think that Dan eventually
22:20
business was just so busy.
22:22
I think one of his posts,
22:23
he said life happened,
22:25
and they were building stuff for people.
22:29
and then the car got redone
22:30
and then was in the show rod,
22:32
like the magazines we were looking at,
22:33
the show world magazines.
22:36
It was in that as Blood Alley
22:37
because somebody else owned it
22:39
like it didn't mention Dan Woods
22:40
and so people didn't know it's the same.
22:42
They didn't know it was the ice truck.
22:44
And then Dave Shudden went to,
22:47
you know, fast forward to like 05
22:49
and Dave Shudden didn't know
22:50
that it got completed
22:52
or anything like that
22:53
was going to build a replica
22:56
And somebody was like,
23:00
no, I know where it is.
23:01
So they made a deal
23:02
and he bought Blood Alley
23:04
and Fritz Schenck painted it.
23:06
You know, so that ties back
23:08
into the mega hauler or mega cycle.
23:10
And so there's a really cool photo
23:12
of Fritz doing the pinch striping
23:13
and stuff on his back.
23:15
You know, it's got the silver leaf on it
23:18
and you can see the fiberglass
23:23
Yeah, it's gorgeous.
23:26
I love the shapes that it has
23:27
because it's like kind of curvy
23:29
but then also it's very geometric.
23:30
Yeah, it's totally,
23:34
It's like a, almost like this.
23:36
I just wanted to say cock.
23:47
It's very immature.
23:50
It is truly a monocoque design
23:52
front to back it's the same fuselage.
23:55
like there's no bed split off of it
23:57
That's what monocoque is.
23:59
Like the VW Rabbit pickup.
24:03
Just one slab all the way down the side.
24:04
And I think the Toronato is also
24:06
the early version of monocoque.
24:08
Not that early cars aren't,
24:10
I mean, lots of early cars are monocoque.
24:17
technical word of the day.
24:20
I mean, I think that,
24:26
Dave did a restoration
24:27
and it is miraculous.
24:29
It's all aluminum Buick V8
24:31
and it's punched big time.
24:32
And so it's got a blower on it
24:34
and the thing's fast AF.
24:37
people thought it was a show car
24:38
and Dan built it to blow the fucking
24:42
He said that he would just go out
24:43
behind shows and light them up
24:45
because you couldn't flip it,
24:48
Whoa, that's awesome.
24:50
I didn't know it drove.
24:53
that arrangement with the Model T
24:54
wheel between your legs is wild.
24:55
I wonder if he ever took it out
24:56
or spin like around the block
24:57
or down to the burger joint.
25:00
To the record store.
25:04
That would be so fun.
25:05
It might have been registered
25:08
Yeah, I forget you have to
25:09
there's lots you have to follow.
25:14
you got to check the photos out.
25:16
it's hard to believe this truck.
25:20
the headers are like running boards.
25:22
they're like two inches off the ground.
25:24
they do look like running boards
25:25
and they're so shiny.
25:26
There's so much to be seen.
25:27
How much do you burn your legs
25:30
Probably fairly cool
25:36
The radiator is like a reverse.
25:37
Fashion over function sometimes.
25:39
viewed from the side,
25:40
is like a reverse cow pusher.
25:42
it would suck a cow into it
25:43
if it were a train.
25:45
is the radiator the...
25:49
it's like formula look,
25:53
but the arrangement,
25:59
a tee would be like that.
26:00
It's hard to tell what's going on there
26:01
but it looks formidable.
26:05
it's a pretty stout look.
26:11
you could have a different grill shell for sure
26:13
you need some weight on the front of this car.
26:15
I don't mean literally,
26:16
I mean like design wise.
26:20
it balances it out.
26:22
obviously he knew that, right?
26:24
giving a design lesson here.
26:25
But it does have a center console,
26:27
which was something that I didn't realize
26:28
until they talked about that.
26:31
the center console had been modified
26:32
or lost or something
26:33
during the restoration,
26:35
that was something they had to,
26:38
Oh yeah, I see that.
26:41
I couldn't even tell from other photos
26:42
until they said that.
26:45
about some of these cars,
26:46
like what they're like inside.
26:47
You don't have a lot of intense,
26:48
like you don't see the toe boards
26:49
and how the pedals are arranged
26:56
and the seats probably don't go back and forth.
26:59
So you got to just be
27:01
you got to be tall enough
27:05
You're like laid back,
27:06
but then reaching for the,
27:08
with the steering wheel in between your
27:10
but also the steering wheel,
27:19
and they come out in like a pointed,
27:21
like an inverted triangle.
27:23
it's the spokes of the steering wheel.
27:24
These are the spokes of the steering wheel
27:25
going into the seat.
27:28
They go down and meet.
27:32
an inverted triangle going into
27:36
your steering wheels already like that.
27:39
It's just dished about two inches.
27:41
This is dished about 20 inches.
27:46
It just seems like it'd be wide down there.
27:49
a three inch circle.
27:51
The spokes meet it.
27:53
Like any steering wheel.
27:58
because I went to blow my nose.
27:59
Now I'm all stuffy.
28:02
but there was a big sneezing fit.
28:04
I don't know if the allergies got to me
28:08
She sneezed like 20 times.
28:11
but I'm going to be really
28:14
which was already too much.
28:16
So we were going off probably about
28:18
and the way they fit in the body,
28:20
the shape of the radiator being
28:22
a reverse cowl pusher shape.
28:24
It's got a blower on it,
28:26
which is about three quarters
28:28
of the way up the windshield.
28:32
The C cab overlaps the windshield
28:35
It's got a Model T cowl.
28:37
And then the rest of it's,
28:38
you know, scratch built
28:39
and it's probably like a
28:41
It's like basically flat sided.
28:43
So it's very true to what
28:45
looks like a wood style.
28:46
It's not really flat sided.
28:49
it's peeked in the center.
28:52
It's peeked in the center.
28:54
I think I'm going to,
28:55
I'm going to give you the floor
28:56
and you should take over.
28:58
speaking of Fritz Schenck,
28:59
who painted the ice truck,
29:00
as you will recall,
29:01
as you just mentioned.
29:02
And the mega cycle.
29:04
Call back to the last episode.
29:05
Call back to the last episode.
29:11
He built the Roswell rod
29:13
in the early 2000s.
29:15
He was channeling his hero,
29:19
What I love about this
29:20
is it was built in the early 2000s.
29:23
but I didn't realize that
29:25
I was surprised to see that.
29:28
Because it looks so,
29:29
it looks like futuristic
29:33
So he totally nailed it.
29:34
The frame is all handmade
29:38
of a 1970 Buick Skylar front end.
29:42
So that's already badass.
29:44
There's another car
29:45
that you have in your list.
29:48
You've got the Beatnik Bandit too.
29:50
And I was looking in the body
29:52
oh, this is like a GM
29:53
or a Detroit front end.
29:55
So that must be a cue
29:57
borrowed from another Ed car.
30:00
I don't know what clip
30:01
he used on that one,
30:02
but Gene would do stuff
30:04
He'd have these big body cars.
30:07
just like big old mobiles
30:08
and use them on like
30:17
I think the 64 Fairlane
30:18
was the NASCAR front end
30:24
Some of those are just like
30:29
Till a few years ago?
30:32
Till the car of tomorrow.
30:33
It just became this geometry
30:34
that they liked for the arrangement.
30:38
and a lower control arm.
30:40
And it's just like,
30:45
It's good geometry.
30:46
It has a little bump steer.
30:47
It's like highly adjustable
30:49
And so it was just like,
30:50
it was the design that they,
30:52
the cars had standard
30:59
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
31:01
There just may be a front clip
31:02
that is like the clip.
31:06
it was the 70 Buick Skylark.
31:08
That's the one he left.
31:10
I guess you could chop some of that out
31:13
It's a two-seater bubble top.
31:16
Roswell radiation flow
31:19
And it was a one off from
31:21
It's a really good color.
31:22
It is a really good color.
31:24
It's like a bright marigold.
31:25
It's all Halloween orange
31:27
I wouldn't call that
31:32
print a little pumpkin
31:34
I'd pick that orange
31:36
I feel like it's more of
31:38
I was born in October.
31:40
I was born in October.
31:42
just because orange is your
31:43
lost your voice there.
31:48
Jack-o-lantern's got your
31:55
What kind of orange
31:56
would you call that surf
31:58
I would call it like a
32:00
I guess he called it
32:03
Roswell radiation flow
32:05
It has candy red scallops
32:06
and black, red and white
32:08
Really thin scallops
32:09
and like really wild
32:11
arrangement where they
32:15
beatnik bandit-esque shape
32:21
or El Camino type fin
32:25
like where it overhangs
32:26
the back of the car
32:29
but they're horizontal.
32:31
is that Impala taillights?
32:33
they're Thunderbird.
32:36
The steering wheel's
32:37
like a boat steering wheel.
32:38
I thought it was like a
32:39
Star Wars steering wheel.
32:41
And it was handmade by him.
32:44
yeah, it's kind of like a
32:45
boat steering wheel.
32:46
It's a little different,
32:47
but call it what you will.
32:48
I'm just trying to describe it
32:51
Well, that was in my
32:52
description that I have in
32:54
Well, does he say it's
32:57
It's just said that
32:58
it's handmade by him.
33:04
Like in the reactor,
33:06
Gene's got it like he
33:07
described it as a boat steering
33:09
wheel, but it's like you hold
33:10
these two rods like that,
33:11
but the bands come across
33:14
whereas Fritz is just the
33:16
vertical bars and it's under
33:18
So it's pretty close to that.
33:19
That's what I was thinking.
33:20
Just look like the Star Wars
33:25
I'm just over here.
33:36
With the 327 Chevy blasting
33:38
out of the engine bay.
33:40
The whole body's got a
33:44
It's got a serious.
33:45
It's like a very aggressive
33:47
like an aerodynamic triangle.
33:49
It looks like it's in motion.
33:52
It's definitely got a triangle
33:54
And there's a little bit
33:56
a little bit of a bug face
33:58
like the headlights and the
34:02
It's got a cute little
34:05
and it also has a sharp
34:07
beak flying out in the front.
34:09
The nose is like it has this
34:13
large oval that goes all the way
34:15
across the front and then it has
34:18
It has this like sort of like
34:20
beak like thing that comes out.
34:23
It's it's like a second plane
34:25
to what becomes the fender.
34:28
It's not on the same plane as
34:31
That plane ends on the headlight,
34:33
which the headlight is very like
34:36
Even the fender has little peaks
34:39
And then I love the floating
34:41
fender over the front wheels,
34:42
but then the back is totally
34:43
encased and it's like a running
34:46
It looks really hard to get into.
34:51
And also it was supposed to be
34:52
the first bubble top
34:53
from the East Coast custom.
34:56
To do it according to the
34:59
I can't remember which article
35:02
Maybe they were telling the truth.
35:04
Yeah, I don't know.
35:05
I find it hard to believe.
35:06
But also the steering wheel
35:08
has a matching chrome shifter.
35:11
The shifter like perfectly matches
35:14
And it has a Roswell radiation
35:15
flow interior with slick white
35:17
and red piping seats and door
35:21
I mean, it's it's it's
35:22
bright white against that
35:23
orange totally molded dash
35:24
asymmetrical dash as well,
35:26
which does prioritize the
35:29
The gauges are in a triangular
35:32
They're in like a delta
35:34
It is more style in the
35:36
dash than it is dash.
35:38
There's not some big screen to be
35:40
staring at or anything like that.
35:41
It's very simplistic,
35:43
which is interesting when you
35:44
like look at it and you're
35:46
like this is to me what
35:48
if I were going to imagine a
35:49
car that lives on Mars,
35:51
you know, Roswell rod like
35:53
alien-esque feeling to it.
35:55
So it feels almost futuristic,
35:57
but it's a past future in the
35:59
sense that like it's just a
36:00
super simple mechanical car.
36:02
No digital readout.
36:05
You know, so it's like just
36:11
I like the simplicity.
36:14
Heavily skirted like
36:16
tunneled around the
36:17
tail light area and you can
36:18
see it's you can see they
36:20
had to get pretty low to
36:21
get a shot of the rear end
36:22
and you still can't really
36:23
see the rear suspension that
36:25
It just looks like an axle.
36:27
It doesn't look like it has
36:28
independent rear suspension
36:31
I really can't even tell
36:33
It looks like it's an axle
36:39
So I think it's just an
36:41
Nothing wrong with that,
36:42
but just an observation.
36:44
It has a four link.
36:45
So it does have a rear
36:46
four link and coilovers.
36:51
Was it hand-lead fiberglass?
36:53
I mean, it's just like
36:54
it's all the right elements.
36:57
You know, and those headlights
37:03
Oh, and this is interesting.
37:04
The grill is made from two
37:08
I looked at that and I
37:19
So a little nod to the past.
37:22
That's really cool.
37:23
I love the astro Supremes.
37:24
Really skinny five spokes.
37:26
I'm assuming that's what's
37:27
on there, which is,
37:28
which is cool to have Astro
37:30
on the Roswell rod.
37:35
Mention the blower again.
37:36
Tiny fiberglass car.
37:38
It's almost above the bubble.
37:40
Tiny, tiny fiberglass car
37:47
And it has the cheater
37:48
slicks on the back.
37:49
So I was wondering,
37:52
do you think that he's
37:54
taking it to the drag strip
37:57
I don't doubt that he's got
37:58
hot and heavy with it.
37:59
It looks like a manual
38:00
transmission, which is pretty
38:05
I wouldn't want to tear it up.
38:08
I can't speak for it, so.
38:10
Is there any chance that
38:11
if you are torquing the
38:12
engine that it would crack
38:13
any of the fiberglass?
38:14
If I was too strong.
38:16
It's always possible,
38:17
but fiberglass is pretty
38:31
I mean, it's pretty much
38:37
Yeah, I love the fins
38:40
I mean, you just look at it.
38:41
I don't think it needs
38:45
you could make it into
38:46
a Hot Wheels and people
38:47
would shit their pants.
38:49
Do you think it was a Hot Wheels?
38:50
Hot Wheels has done some
38:51
knockoff, you know,
38:52
bubble top type stuff.
38:57
What else you got on it?
39:03
I didn't read much about
39:08
By much, I mean anything.
39:10
embroidered into the seats.
39:18
Does he do mostly painting?
39:20
Well, it looks like
39:21
it shows that he does
39:24
fiberglass and pinstriping.
39:28
All kinds of odds and ends
39:29
and he makes small things
39:31
I think he has a mold
39:32
of like halves of bowling pins
39:34
and he'll paint and
39:35
pinstripe them and sell them
39:38
and stuff and makes
39:39
like the fiberglass,
39:42
fiberglass surf helmets.
39:52
get in where you fit in.
39:54
We've got to take a detour
39:56
we've talked for so long
39:57
about both of these,
39:59
really deserves the time
40:02
it's pretty amazing
40:03
and the Roswell rod is,
40:10
that's your favorite color.
40:12
it's just a hot wheels,
40:13
just sitting there.
40:14
I think that's what it,
40:15
your car should just like,
40:16
you should just feel like
40:17
you're looking at a toy.
40:21
because it's full size
40:26
there's not enough time
40:27
to cover the next two
40:28
because they're both
40:29
pretty good stories
40:30
and they're both Roth cars.
40:33
mine's embarrassed.
40:39
We've got so many left.
40:44
got TV and movie cars.
40:47
he's going to love that.
40:48
We're going to do a TV.
40:49
We are going to do TV.
40:50
I think we're going to do TV.
40:51
Separate and movie car separate.
40:53
they're separate because there's
40:57
there's obviously some
40:58
bare stuff in there.
41:02
we've been in the shop
41:05
I've got the windshield out.
41:07
So we've been fixing
41:08
some rust around the windshield
41:10
It wasn't too much.
41:13
we've been wire wheeling
41:14
the crap out of it.
41:15
There's been a lot of wire wheeling.
41:17
When we stripped that van
41:19
before it was mine,
41:21
we just like stripped it
41:23
with like angle grinders and stuff.
41:25
we were pretty hard on the body,
41:26
but we didn't strip the nose.
41:27
So at least the sheet metal
41:28
is not too worn out there.
41:33
and John was just grinding,
41:39
thin the corner out.
41:43
it's just epoxy everywhere
41:47
we're going to paint the dash.
41:49
Because you filled in
41:50
a bunch of holes in the dash.
41:52
Somebody had cut the,
41:53
that dash has a speaker grill
41:54
where like a mono speaker
41:56
And somebody had cut
41:57
that open to a double den
42:00
an open hole the whole time
42:05
And then the ashtray,
42:07
So I don't need the ashtray
42:08
and that's where my phone
42:10
I have a phone mount there
42:11
with the phone mount.
42:12
It's just sheet metal right now.
42:14
But we got rid of the ashtray
42:16
And then I rearranged
42:17
the heater controls.
42:18
After driving that fan,
42:19
I've been driving them
42:20
for like two years daily now.
42:22
And the heater controls
42:24
in the middle of the dash.
42:27
Even for your arms.
42:32
A lot of times in the winter
42:33
it's actually checking
42:35
to make sure it is on
42:36
because it's hard to hear
42:38
or it's the radiator fan.
42:39
I have an electric fan
42:41
So sometimes I'm like,
42:43
Because it gets cold.
42:46
That fan is so cold.
42:50
Nothing but air holes everywhere.
42:53
Well, it's not insulated.
42:58
It's a big part of it.
43:01
all the dash pad holes.
43:05
It looks really good.
43:11
We did have to do some shrinking.
43:12
Opposite of shrinking too?
43:23
what you do back and forth.
43:25
It turned out really
43:26
it was an awesome process
43:27
to see first of all.
43:29
to see Rose in her element
43:31
because I've not seen that
43:33
And then just to see
43:34
how everything works.
43:35
We uncovered a little
43:36
damage where there was
43:37
all that body filler
43:39
to get it in gloss black
43:40
is just piecemeal paint
43:41
one panel at a time
43:42
which is fun on the
43:44
There seems everywhere.
43:45
So you're going to have
43:46
to be creative with the
43:48
but that's the only way
43:49
it's going to happen for me.
43:51
where I can just like
43:55
do the windshield frame
44:00
then we'll go after
44:09
that whole corner is so messed up.
44:10
Some erectile damage?
44:15
you can't open the door.
44:16
So it's limp, you know.
44:18
Well, that top hinge
44:22
and it does go limp.
44:25
we got to open that door
44:29
So we're going to paint
44:30
that pillar and stuff.
44:31
So that's been cool
44:32
and fixing the rest
44:33
in the windshield frame
44:35
But then I also got
44:48
with the transition
44:50
Important that it came
44:51
with the transmission
44:52
because it's its own
44:55
bell housing design.
45:00
exactly what that means.
45:01
Well, it means it like
45:02
we explain it to me.
45:05
bolt pattern for the
45:08
you can just throw any
45:11
It's not that pattern.
45:14
So it's good that you got
45:19
it's only two or three
45:22
I see what you're saying.
45:37
do it then talk about it.
45:40
set myself up for failure,
45:41
but I got a cowl in
45:42
and that's what I want to
45:43
start from to get my
45:45
So I got a Model T cowl.
45:47
And it looks pretty
46:00
hot riders would call
46:06
is it easy to find?
46:11
I had like four or five
46:16
They were all about
46:25
that would be easy to find.
46:26
I thought it'd be all like
46:29
I was trying to buy one out
46:31
and it like disappeared
46:35
the one from Georgia
46:36
shipped right away.
46:38
I got it in the van.
46:39
And so the Cadillac motor,
46:42
two inch by four inch
46:47
scheming up a body.
46:57
I've got breaks to do
47:01
what it feels like.
47:05
So that thing runs good.
47:06
It's more little guys
47:07
got like a burn valve
47:10
it's nice to have two cars
47:11
because like, you know,
47:13
having to do the windshield
47:14
in the van at least
47:15
I've got something to drive.
47:17
So I want to do that swap.
47:26
I've had the heads off.
47:30
I've got two in the shop
47:37
and I'm like taking
47:41
to work on this hot rod
47:43
And to just enjoy life.
47:47
she has been working
47:50
like a full time job
47:52
to the shop after work
47:56
Sometimes she only takes
47:57
one, she takes one day
48:01
Just having to like.
48:04
I like making stuff
48:06
but it also brings stress
48:07
because eventually like,
48:09
people want their stuff
48:10
and sometimes it's not,
48:11
you know, whatever like
48:12
the heat kept me out
48:13
of the shop in the summer.
48:14
It just was too hot.
48:21
and I just don't want
48:28
a little bit of a break.
48:30
it's really cool getting
48:36
working on the van.
48:38
like driving that thing
48:40
the dash is what I stare at
48:42
So it's nice to rearrange it.
48:47
that like I find obnoxious.
48:51
trying to eliminate
48:59
make it more how you
49:01
and what you're going to look at.
49:03
Did you move the computer light?
49:05
I'm going to put something else.
49:06
I welded up the hole that it was.
49:10
so it's kind of loose anyway.
49:14
so it didn't need to be tight
49:15
but it was like flopping around.
49:20
when I did all that,
49:22
when I did all that.
49:23
So I just was like,
49:25
and just dropped it in.
49:26
As you do sometimes.
49:44
It's been really fun.
49:46
I've had a great time.
49:48
I made that roll pan
49:49
and then I was like,
49:50
oh, I should louver it.
49:51
And then I was like,
49:52
it doesn't even need
49:53
the license plate hole.
49:54
I have license plates
49:55
and I like it there
49:56
because it's got a light
49:57
that Ford made for it.
50:07
I made this rear roll pan
50:08
because the roll pan
50:13
the license plate frame
50:16
the rest of it's gone.
50:21
and then I was like,
50:22
just moved the goal post
50:25
and it doesn't need
50:26
the license plate opening,
50:27
which makes it simpler,
50:31
have the license plate cut out.
50:32
So I got to make a new file.
50:35
working through the rest
50:37
that's what the story is.
50:40
That's what the story is.
50:41
We're sticking to it.
50:49
interested in making
50:53
Chevy thing that they did
50:55
I think it was Chevy.
50:59
I have some orange plaid
51:01
Guess who's favorite color
51:06
I guess I don't want to
51:07
put too much emotion
51:08
into Joe's response.
51:09
He might have just said,
51:11
I got some of that.
51:16
So that's kind of cool.
51:17
It'd be neat to do that
51:18
and be neat to have.
51:19
I put a seat cover in
51:21
Somebody got me some
51:22
and like within a week,
51:23
it broke the piping off the edge.
51:25
Oh, they were trash.
51:27
within the first day,
51:28
they had rips in them.
51:29
Yeah, it was garbage.
51:31
Pretty disappointing,
51:32
but really disappointing.
51:35
all the more reason to get
51:36
something from Joe.
51:38
Those will be tight.
51:41
it's be totally foreign to
51:42
me to have cool stuff
51:48
It's looking so cool.
51:49
It's cool to get to
51:51
so that's if you're like,
51:53
why are you making stuff for me?
51:55
It's because I'm making some
51:57
I think that's all we have
52:01
that's our life right up
52:03
Everything that we've told
52:04
you is everything that's
52:09
two to three meals a day
52:12
Just to give you an idea
52:13
on what's going to happen
52:14
between now and then
52:16
I usually eat four meals a
52:22
You haven't been eating that
52:25
a number of sleeps,
52:26
and then we'll talk to you
52:28
Thanks for listening.
52:29
Done been piled up.
52:30
Done been piled up.
