00:00
Hey everybody, welcome to another bonus episode, a bonus episode for Overland Expo, and the last
00:17
Overland Expo of the year, Overland Expo East.
00:22
Going to this event was really, really great, but it was also bittersweet because it was
00:27
the last one, and I was a little sad.
00:30
I was talking to Milton about that too when we were both a little sad, but still it was
00:35
We had a lot of really good people there that came down from Adventure 1 to be part of
00:42
Camp Subaru, so that was really nice.
00:44
And then we had, of course, some other campers that were emailed and asked to come out,
00:49
or asked if they would like to join, and they did.
00:52
So we got to meet some new people that way as well.
00:54
But before I go any further, I just want to give a huge, huge shout out to Joe at Subaru
00:59
of America, and then Subaru of America, and then Sean and G7, and everybody that participated
01:06
in this event, and had me out there, and all of us out there at all of the Expo's.
01:14
Subaru definitely deserves a place at Overland Expo, and they came in, and they came
01:19
in big because their booth space, still, I don't like calling it a booth, but
01:24
their space was huge.
01:26
It was much bigger, I think, than most of the other ones.
01:30
And I think that made a really good impression on people, and it made a really good impression
01:34
on all of us that were a part of the event, that were able to participate, people that
01:40
had their cars in the booth, in the space, and like me and Milton and Kerry, everybody
01:46
that got to travel around to most of the events, it was great.
01:51
It was like, I am so honored and blessed and feel just truly grateful to have been a part
01:58
of this experience, and I look forward to next year.
02:02
We have some ideas for next year, and we're going to all kind of brainstorm on that a
02:07
little bit later this year, but I'm just, I'm so glad Subaru was there.
02:13
There were people that came into the Subaru space and said that they came there
02:18
because they saw that Subaru was going to be at Overland Expo, and then there were people
02:23
that came in that did not know Subaru was going to be there, and were really excited
02:27
to see Subaru there, and so we're definitely excited to see them there.
02:33
But yeah, I just had an amazing time.
02:35
I got to meet so many people.
02:38
I got to meet people that I've been connected with and that I've chatted with, that
02:41
I've had on the podcast, and that was really, really great, and I got to meet a lot
02:46
of new people as well.
02:48
So overall, it was just such an incredible experience, and again, I just feel truly honored
02:54
and blessed and so grateful to have been part of it.
02:57
I also want to give a huge shout out to everybody that has shown support for the podcast lately,
03:06
especially this week, because as you may know, I lost my job on Monday, and the outpouring
03:13
of support and messages from the community has been just absolutely amazing, and so I
03:20
really, really appreciate it from the bottom of my heart for everybody's support.
03:26
Of course, I didn't know that I was going to go into work Monday morning and lose
03:30
my job, but I also didn't know I wasn't sure about posting the reel that I did asking
03:38
for support, but I just, I felt like I needed to, and I'm so glad I did because the community
03:45
has come together and it's been absolutely incredible.
03:49
So if you want to know how you can support the podcast and support, I mean it's not
03:54
just me, it's supporting the podcast, and that's supporting everybody because this podcast
03:58
is about the whole community, it's not just about me, it's about everybody that
04:03
is a guest, everybody that's listening, everybody that participates in all the events that
04:09
This podcast is for everybody, so if you want to be able to help support and you're not
04:13
already doing so, you can go to the link tree in my Instagram page and click on the second
04:20
link, it says like support the podcast, join Patreon, something like that, I can't
04:24
remember exactly what it says there, but that's how you can help support the podcast
04:29
and keep this thing going because I definitely don't want to have me not having a job
04:36
stop the podcast, I want to keep being able to do this and I want to be able to continue
04:41
to go to events, and I would love to be able to do this full time, I would love to be
04:47
able to go out to more events, I've had so many people say, are you coming out to
04:50
Wicked Big Meat, are you coming out to Subifest California, oh you gotta come up here,
04:54
you gotta come up there, and one of the reasons I haven't been able to do a lot
05:01
more things is one, lack of funds of course, but two, PTO, I only have so much PTO, but
05:09
if I'm doing this full time, this is, I can do whatever I want, I can go wherever I
05:14
want, so that would be an absolute dream to be able to do this full time, so if
05:21
you want to help try and get me there, you can help support the podcast by joining
05:28
Patreon, it definitely helps, it's $7 a month, so it's not a huge, huge amount, and I feel
05:37
like one of those commercials where they're like, for only the cost of two cups of coffee,
05:43
you can help support blah blah blah, I know it's kind of being silly, but anyway, that's
05:49
me, I'm silly, but anyway, for all the people that have joined Patreon and helped support
05:55
the podcast, I really, really appreciate it, it really means a lot, because every little
05:59
bit counts, and it can help pull me through this time right now, but also help carry me
06:04
forward, which is what I would really love to be able to do, and so I appreciate all of
06:09
you very, very much, it really means a lot. As I was putting this episode together and
06:15
pulling in all the audio files, I started to see that it was getting really, really
06:19
long, I thought about breaking it up into two segments, but it's already been two
06:24
weeks since I've been at Overland Expo, and I haven't had the chance to put the
06:29
episode out yet, so I'm gonna leave it as one episode, however, what I would
06:35
suggest is, well first of all, I don't ever listen to a podcast this long, all in
06:41
one stretch, I usually will break it up, because I haven't listened to a Joe
06:46
Rogan podcast in a long time, one of his episodes, but anytime that I did, I
06:51
almost never listened to it all at once, I would listen to it over the course of a
06:55
few days, because his are like, anywhere from two and a half to three and a half
06:59
hours, or if you're on a long drive, that's a really great time to listen to
07:04
a long podcast, and this is coming out on Friday, so if you've got a weekend
07:10
drive, perfect time to listen to the whole thing, if you're gonna be
07:12
driving that long. So what I will do for you on this episode is give you a
07:17
timestamp of when I complete the first day, or actually, whenever I get to day
07:24
two, because day two is where it really starts getting long, and day two I mean
07:28
Saturday, because I started off on Thursday, October 2nd then, and that was
07:35
the trail ride on, or the drive through Shenandoah National Forest, the 105
07:41
mile drive that we did, so I recorded on my own there, but I've got some
07:47
content from there, and then also from Friday, which is the first day of
07:51
Overland Expo, and then I have content starting on day two of Overland Expo,
07:58
which is Saturday, so at that point, if you want to listen all the way up to
08:03
day two, that ends at one hour and 18 minutes, so if you want to stop there
08:09
and then pick up day two and three, feel free to do so, but wanted to
08:13
give you that option, and I've never done that before, like, you know,
08:17
suggested breaking it up, because I don't think I've ever had an episode be this
08:22
long before, but hey, it's kind of cool to have a really long episode for once.
08:26
Again, I just, I appreciate everybody, I appreciate the community, Subaru of
08:31
America, this podcast would not continue to keep going if it wasn't for all of
08:36
you, so just by listening alone, that, you know, helps to keep this going,
08:41
because I wouldn't put something out if nobody was listening, but I appreciate
08:46
everybody, I really, really, really am so grateful and thankful for this
08:51
opportunity, and I'm glad I started this thing, because it's growing into be
08:55
something pretty amazing, and I'm glad that I get to share it with all of you,
08:58
but you know what, we're gonna go ahead and get into this bonus episode now.
09:01
I've been talking long enough, so it's time to just get it going right here,
09:11
All right, I am heading out with the group.
09:22
I just want to know when everybody is in line, I just want to get an idea of how much space I need here.
09:29
That is our group, we're doing the skyline trail, it's actually not a trail, it's a drive.
09:35
Apparently it's got some very beautiful scenery, so I'm looking forward to that,
09:42
Is everybody that is doing the skyline drive currently in line?
09:47
All right, just about.
09:52
So anyway, yeah, so we're doing the skyline drive.
09:55
This is Thursday, October 2nd.
09:59
All right, I'm on low now.
10:01
And Thursday, October 2nd.
10:03
Are they cool? Everybody's in line?
10:06
So Thursday, October 2nd, we're trying to, we're doing the skyline drive.
10:10
Apparently it's going to be like a six-hour drive, so that'll be interesting,
10:14
but there's some beautiful scenery.
10:17
There is a group that's doing, I forgot what the name of the trail is,
10:23
but it's more of an off-road trail.
10:26
And since I have a rental...
10:32
So thank you for escorting the elderly.
10:35
Since I have a rental, I'm not going in the fun off-road trail.
10:42
So I'm missing out on that, but this will be...
10:48
This will be a nice drive to see some stuff.
10:53
And I'm here, Nick, South Coast Cross Trek.
10:56
He is leading this drive, so that's pretty cool.
11:00
But I wanted to get some in-car content by myself.
11:04
Milton was riding with me, but he bailed on me
11:08
and hopped in the car with Patrick from Orbis Overlanding.
11:12
So I'm in the car by myself now.
11:15
No more Milton, but that's okay.
11:18
Milton deserves an experience with Patrick.
11:21
That'll be some good time for them to spend together
11:24
because Milton had met Patrick for the first time on this trip.
11:29
So I know he wanted to talk to him about some stuff anyway.
11:33
Apparently he is going to be...
11:36
I just wanted to chat about Subaru, because she owned a Subaru.
11:40
Milton is in all the...
11:43
Well, the last couple of Overland Expo events,
11:48
he has done an axle swap or an axle replacement demonstration.
11:56
And he's going to do one on Patrick's car.
12:04
Because apparently Patrick needs new axles anyway,
12:07
so it's a perfect chance to do that.
12:09
Somebody that needs axles.
12:12
By the way, I'm just going to interject here.
12:15
The axles never showed up.
12:17
So we did not get...
12:19
Or Milton did not get a chance to do a live axle swap on Patrick's car.
12:25
So I think he's going to have him delivered to his house
12:28
because he still needs them.
12:30
They were supposed to come to the bed and breakfast that we were staying in,
12:34
but they never showed up.
12:35
So we didn't end up doing that.
12:37
But I just wanted to clarify that that never happened.
12:41
Anyway, we're leaving the park now that we were at breakfast.
12:45
It was all the people that were invited out to camp Subaru
12:49
plus those of us that are going to be at the Subaru booth.
12:54
So Patrick, his car is going to be a booth car.
12:57
And then there's Corey with SoFly.
13:00
I don't think she's going to be a booth car, but she's here.
13:03
She followed Patrick.
13:05
And so yeah, so we're heading out and going to take a beautiful drive,
13:14
And I will keep you updated as we go along.
13:18
But I flew out just for context.
13:21
I flew out Wednesday, October 1st.
13:30
Anyway, I flew into DCA and I got in at noon and then Milton asked
13:37
if I could pick him up when he gets in because he got in at five.
13:40
So I did some exploring and just walked around,
13:43
checked some things out and drove around.
13:46
So I had a good time.
13:48
I had been to DC before for work and had a chance to go walk around
13:53
and see stuff and I'd been wanting to go back.
13:56
So this was a great opportunity to take that extra time to go see some stuff.
14:02
And then we met up with Sean from Subaru last night.
14:07
Also met up with Patrick and Corey and then just hung out with them.
14:13
They were at the restaurant that's at the hotel.
14:16
So we hung out with them for a while.
14:18
And then we ended up going to bed and not getting great sleep.
14:24
And got up at 6.30 or met up at 6.30 to go to Cracker Barrel
14:29
to pick up some food for breakfast this morning for all of the campers.
14:34
Met at this campsite or not a campsite.
14:39
And we ended up all having breakfast and getting to meet new people.
14:46
So that was really cool.
14:47
So this is a good trip for me because I've had an opportunity
14:52
at all of these Overland Expos to meet new people.
14:56
We're going to take a ride out of here everybody.
14:58
Yeah, I've had a chance to meet new people.
15:00
So that's been really cool.
15:02
People that I didn't already know.
15:04
People that I've been following on Instagram for a really long time.
15:07
So that was really cool.
15:09
And this will be interesting.
15:11
Definitely a good chance we're going to get a little separated here
15:14
from cars in between.
15:16
It shouldn't be an issue.
15:18
We might have a spot we can kind of just pull over and let them pass.
15:22
Yeah, so if you heard that I'm sure you did.
15:25
They said there's because we're pulling out onto a major road.
15:28
So there's going to be other parts.
15:30
Don't just let me know when you come out.
15:34
Anyway, yeah, so we're starting this drive.
15:37
I've got all the windows up now or it's going to get too windy for the episode.
15:41
But yeah, we're heading out.
15:44
It's some beautiful scenery.
15:46
It's going to be perfect weather for Overland Expo this weekend.
15:49
I heard that or I saw the weather channels.
15:52
I think it's going to be the high is going to be like 75
15:56
and at the highest point on one of these days.
15:59
So it's going to be such a great weekend.
16:02
But yeah, I'm looking forward to this weekend.
16:06
Another Overland Expo.
16:08
The last one for this year.
16:10
So very bittersweet.
16:12
But it's just been again, such a great opportunity to be a part of these.
16:17
And I'm excited about it.
16:20
But anyway, that's it for now.
16:22
And I'll hop back on and a little bit to add to this.
16:27
Welcome to Overland Expo, Virginia.
16:33
All right, we are actually on Skyline Drive right now.
16:43
So yeah, so we're on Skyline Drive right now in the National Forest.
16:48
And it was because of the shutdown.
16:56
It was free to get into the park.
17:01
And so far, this view is pretty amazing.
17:06
We're going through a wooded area, but we just drove past an overlook
17:11
and the view is pretty nice.
17:14
So we're just continuing on the speed limit here is like 35 miles an hour.
17:19
But we're going about an average of 30, which is nice.
17:23
It's nice to just slow down and enjoy the view.
17:27
We're definitely enjoying this view.
17:30
It's really, really, really pretty and we just started.
17:34
So I'm looking forward to what we will come into past where we're at now.
17:39
That's going to be a nice, nice day.
17:42
The other thing that's really cool that I don't get to do too often is
17:47
roll with a bunch of Subaru's.
17:50
We're like, I don't know how many there's to me.
17:53
One, two, three, four, five, six in front of me.
17:56
Do you know the peak elevation we're going to see?
17:58
One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, like seven or eight Subaru's behind me.
18:11
I do know the total elevation gain is 12,000.
18:16
Do the whole thing.
18:20
I'm looking forward to this.
18:24
Like I said, we're just into this.
18:27
And it's really, really pretty because we're driving through this wooded area,
18:33
which driving through wooded areas is always nice.
18:38
It's going to be fun to hear the conversations here over the radio too,
18:42
as I'm sure you're able to hear some of that.
18:50
But yeah, now, oh my gosh, we just pulled over to a clearing.
18:56
I've got wooded area on the left and rock to the right.
19:00
It is a drop off, but there's a short little rock wall,
19:04
but the view is beautiful.
19:07
Wow, it's really nice.
19:10
Yeah, did you hear that?
19:13
And if you look to your right, you'll see something beautiful.
19:18
Yeah, we're going up quite a bit right now.
19:21
There is talk about CVTs.
19:24
Oh, my CVT is going to be so happy with me.
19:27
Yeah, this is a beautiful view.
19:29
I forgot your name already.
19:31
Who is the local that I was talking to that drives this all the time?
19:40
Anyone? Anyone? Viewler?
19:43
They were having radio technical difficulties at this point.
19:46
That's why we never heard back.
19:48
Okay, well, we're waiting to hear back from that person, but...
19:52
Oh, this is beautiful.
19:54
I guess I'm out here.
19:56
Hi, we're going to pull into this visitor center right here
19:59
just to reestablish comms,
20:01
because I think we might have some issues there.
20:06
Everybody, we're pulling into the visitor center.
20:10
All right, so I'm going to do the Subaru account.
20:12
We've got Nick here in the lead with his Outback
20:15
that he built out for Overland Expo.
20:17
Then we've got a Cross Trek Sport.
20:19
We've got an Outback Wilderness.
20:22
Another Outback Wilderness.
20:25
And then we've got a new Forester,
20:28
which is really nice.
20:29
I don't think it's a hybrid.
20:30
No, it's not a hybrid, but it looks nice.
20:32
Then we've got a Forester Sport.
20:35
Then my Turro Cross Trek.
20:40
I don't know what year it is.
20:42
So far we've got what?
20:44
One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine,
20:50
10, 11, 12, 13, 14 Subarus.
20:58
I counted one of the cars that's here mistakenly.
21:03
So we're continuing on.
21:05
We stopped at an Overlook, which was really, really nice.
21:09
And now we're driving again.
21:12
And we are going to find a spot to stop for lunch,
21:18
because it is almost one o'clock here.
21:21
We had breakfast at a little pavilion in a park.
21:25
And Sean got Cracker Barrel for everybody.
21:30
And we have a bunch of leftovers.
21:32
So our group is the lucky ones that get to eat some leftovers.
21:38
So everybody seems excited about that.
21:41
Somebody, I don't know who was on the radio,
21:43
said that they have a griddle and somebody else has propane.
21:47
So we are going to stop somewhere and heat up
21:52
some of this leftover food and eat.
21:55
So that'll be good.
21:57
By the way, we never ended up eating that food,
22:00
because we just didn't have time to stop,
22:03
get out all the food, get out the griddles,
22:06
and set it all up because we were running short on time
22:09
because we had to be at Overland Expo.
22:11
The campers had to be at Overland Expo inside the gate before 6 p.m.
22:16
And that posed to be a little bit of an issue later on for some people,
22:20
but we got it cleared up, or cleared up rather.
22:23
But yeah, so we had to continue on.
22:25
And we had some leftover food.
22:27
And unfortunately, we were able to put some of it aside,
22:30
but unfortunately, some of it went to waste.
22:33
So not always, you know, can't always do something about that.
22:37
But yeah, we had some snacks, so that was good.
22:40
But then we continued on. Here we go.
22:43
And the views here again are just incredible.
22:47
And so if you are ever able to make it to Virginia
22:52
and you can get out to Skyline Drive,
22:55
I believe this is Shenandoah National Forest or National Park,
23:00
I highly recommend it.
23:02
I think it's like a 105-mile drive for this.
23:06
It might be the equivalent distance to Cheeseburger Loop.
23:10
I don't know what the actual distance of Cheeseburger Loop is.
23:14
I'm sure it's on the map where I have it on there.
23:17
I don't think I've ever looked at it though.
23:19
But since I have some time while I'm sitting here
23:21
because I don't have a job,
23:23
I looked up the Cheeseburger Loop on Gaia
23:27
and it says that it's 163.26 miles.
23:32
Wow. I have not driven the whole thing,
23:35
not even a, well, maybe like a quarter of it, but that's about it.
23:38
But they said that this is going to be like a five to six hour drive.
23:45
What are your guys, your preference?
23:48
What's your favorite Subaru model and why is it the Outback?
23:53
So, yeah, so anyway, we, oh, I don't know.
24:01
What do we have? I think we have more Outbacks in this line than Foresters.
24:06
I'm driving a StarCross Trek because I wasn't able to print.
24:13
But then the rest are Outbacks and Foresters.
24:16
Yeah, two Cross Tricks.
24:18
There are some very cool Subarus in our group.
24:27
Yeah, there you go. We're all cool here.
24:32
I don't know what I was saying before that,
24:35
but other than the food, I don't remember.
24:40
But anyway, this drive is beautiful.
24:42
And, oh yeah, I was saying, like, if you have an opportunity to come out here
24:46
and drive this drive, it is incredibly beautiful.
24:50
I highly recommend it.
24:52
Oh yeah, I was saying, I was talking about Cheeseburger Loop
24:54
and the distance of this.
24:55
So, Cheeseburger Loop is potentially about maybe the same distance.
25:03
As far as I've driven in Cheeseburger Loop,
25:05
it's taken me at least a couple of hours to get the distance that I have.
25:09
And I only drove maybe a quarter of Cheeseburger Loop.
25:13
So, one of these days, we're going to plan a group drive
25:19
and do all of Cheeseburger Loop.
25:22
So, we'll have to set that up at some point.
25:24
But yeah, this drive here is incredibly beautiful.
25:28
Cheeseburger Loop does not look like this.
25:36
For those of you out west and have taken the drive,
25:40
which I know a lot of people I've talked to have,
25:43
this drive on Skyline Road reminds me a lot of the drive up to Big Bear Lake.
25:49
Because I went up there for work and I remember taking the windy road
25:54
and the views and it was really, really beautiful.
26:00
And so, now taking this drive on Skyline Road,
26:05
it looks very similar just as far as like the windiness
26:11
and the views remind me a lot of the drive up to Big Bear.
26:16
So, it's really, really cool.
26:19
And full disclosure, I did not know there were spots like this in Virginia
26:26
because I've never been outside of the DC area.
26:29
I've never been into the wilderness area of Virginia.
26:34
So, I kind of feel like a little bit of a dummy,
26:38
not knowing that beautiful spots in Virginia like this existed.
26:43
I just never, I never knew because I've never been.
26:46
So, coming on this trip and being able to come out early to do this drive,
26:52
I'm very, very thankful and I feel very blessed to have come out here and done this.
26:58
So, thank you so much, Joe from Subaru and Sean
27:03
and anybody else at Subaru who is involved in putting together Overland Expo
27:08
and inviting me out among all these other amazing people
27:13
that we've all had a chance to meet.
27:17
Because so many people are meeting new people out there with Subarus for the first time.
27:22
So, all of this has been really, really cool
27:25
because talking to the campers at Out in Loveland
27:30
and Overland Expo Mountain West in Colorado,
27:34
a lot of the people just, they got, they were just like normal.
27:39
A lot of the people were like everyday drivers.
27:43
You know, I don't think they were really connected with the Subaru community
27:47
the way a lot of other people are.
27:49
So, they got an email inviting them out to camp Subaru
27:53
and it gave them an opportunity to meet up with other Subaru owners
27:58
and make some new friendships and see the hospitality of Subaru of America
28:04
and I think it's pretty amazing.
28:07
So, thank you Subaru of America, everybody that was involved,
28:11
especially Joe, thank you so much for putting this together.
28:15
And right now it's just, it's very bittersweet
28:18
because this is the last stop this year of Overland Expo out here in Virginia.
28:25
So, I'm gonna of course enjoy it a lot,
28:29
but it's also gonna be sad when it's over.
28:32
And again, just very, very thankful to have met so many people
28:37
for the first time meeting new people that I didn't know,
28:41
meeting people that I've been connected with through Instagram for so long
28:45
and have talked to or have had on the podcast
28:47
and then also getting to see people again that I have been connected with
28:52
that I have seen before in person.
28:55
So, it's, and getting to see the people that have been at all the expos that I've been at too
29:01
like Milton and Troy and some of the other people that have been involved with it.
29:06
So, it's just been a lot of fun and I'm extremely grateful right now.
29:12
We just passed mile marker 100.
29:17
So, we've only got five miles to go
29:20
and I made an announcement at mile marker 95
29:26
because this is 105 miles.
29:28
So, I was like, oh, only 10 more miles to go.
29:31
Somebody said, I'm ready for a nap.
29:34
And somebody else said, they were ready for a nap too.
29:37
I'm definitely ready for a nap.
29:39
This has been a long drive and I'm really tired.
29:44
I also didn't get much sleep last night.
29:46
I went to sleep at probably around 1130 and I was going to get up at 630.
29:53
No, I was going to get up at 530.
29:55
So, I went to actually, I think I went to bed a little after 11.
30:00
So, I was thinking I'll probably get about six hours of sleep,
30:06
six and a half hours of sleep.
30:08
And I ended up waking up at 230 and then 330
30:13
and then my alarm went off at 530
30:16
and I got up slowly and met Sean and Milton
30:22
so that we could go pick up food from Cracker Barrel.
30:25
But that lack of sleep is really, really catching up to me
30:31
and I'm trying to just make it through the rest of this drive.
30:35
It's a beautiful drive but there's a lot of windy roads
30:39
and it's slow and yeah, I'm just getting really, really tired.
30:44
But I will make it to the end and I'll be okay.
30:51
But it'll be nice to stop, pull over, stretch and yeah.
30:57
Won't be taking a nap for a while.
30:59
Probably won't go to sleep until tonight but that's okay.
31:02
But yeah, oh we just passed mile marker 101.
31:07
So, four more miles, we'll be done with this thing.
31:10
We did make it to mile 105 by the way.
31:13
So, only four more miles but we all ended up pulling over
31:16
and stretching and resting for a little bit
31:19
and just trying to collaborate and figure out
31:21
what we were going to do next
31:23
which basically was just making it to Overland Expo
31:25
so that all the campers could set up.
31:27
So, we did do that, made it there
31:29
and people started setting up.
31:31
So, we got into the event, got to see the whole setup
31:35
and everything and then we hung out for a while
31:38
and then Milton and the other people
31:40
that were doing the more off-road trail,
31:42
they showed up a little bit later.
31:44
They had some trouble getting in
31:46
because they were supposed to be there by six o'clock
31:48
or before six o'clock.
31:49
And Overland Expo was, the people were kind of giving them
31:52
a little bit of a hard time but they made it in
31:56
But yeah, that closed out the first day out there
32:00
and then this, these conversations are the start
32:03
of the first day of Overland Expo.
32:06
I'm here at Overland Expo East, day one
32:09
and I'm sitting here with Sam at Wandering Fawzi.
32:12
How's it going, man?
32:13
It's going quite good, yourself?
32:15
What do you think of Expo so far?
32:18
It's my first time.
32:19
I came in yesterday morning,
32:20
kind of got out of the way to land,
32:21
checked everything out,
32:22
set my vehicle up and did a little bit
32:24
of walking around this morning so far
32:26
but probably this afternoon
32:28
I want to do some more walking around,
32:29
check out some more to boost
32:30
and have some more conversations.
32:32
Yeah, so what's really cool
32:34
is I'm getting to meet you for the first time.
32:36
After all these years,
32:38
we've been chatting for a really long time
32:40
to finally get to meet you
32:42
and it's been really cool to meet a lot of people here
32:45
at all the Expo events.
32:48
Getting to see people I've met before
32:50
but then getting to meet new people
32:52
has been super awesome.
32:54
Coming here is a definite pleasure.
32:56
Getting to meet a lot of people
32:57
that have been wanting to meet on Instagram,
33:00
Getting to meet Rafael,
33:01
getting to meet Milton.
33:02
Handful of other people
33:03
from the Subaru camp
33:04
and definitely was not expecting it
33:06
and it was definitely really nice
33:08
treating it as a surprise.
33:10
So tell us about your setup here
33:12
because and your location
33:15
because it's a pretty nice location.
33:18
I have my 2015 Subaru Forester
33:20
that is heavily modified
33:21
through full force metal works.
33:23
Cascadevico tents with up tent.
33:25
Cascadevico tents awning.
33:27
My custom cooking setup
33:30
and the cutting board
33:32
on my spot out fridge.
33:36
right in between the penders
33:38
in the food-drink area.
33:40
So it's called a showcase to yourself area
33:43
and this is where people who can
33:45
who have modified vehicles
33:47
in a way that makes it better
33:49
and for their ventures
33:50
and also as a bit of their personalized
33:54
So I'm the front one area
33:56
I'm in the first side,
33:58
the first side of the row
34:03
I think in a ideal spot.
34:06
So the entrance is to behind us.
34:09
So as you're coming in
34:10
you walk down this long aisle
34:11
there's a bunch of vendors set up
34:12
and then you're kind of
34:13
in this little showcase area.
34:14
But what's really cool too
34:17
like a lot of the really big vendors
34:19
inside this area behind you
34:21
so they have to pass by your vehicle
34:23
to get into that bigger area.
34:25
So that's really cool.
34:26
You've got some good exposure
34:27
and have you had some people come by
34:29
talking to you about it?
34:31
I've had people walk past
34:32
and then they realize
34:33
I had the drawers set up
34:34
and I'm back in the cooking set up
34:36
oh, and they do the turn around.
34:38
They look at it again
34:39
and that's when you use
34:40
the most conversation to start.
34:41
I've had some people come up
34:43
oh, I'm bringing my kids tomorrow.
34:44
I'm bringing my husband later.
34:45
He wants to come check this out.
34:47
If you have some future conversations
34:49
I do have a showcase hour
34:54
where I'll be doing a full
34:56
and answering all the questions
34:59
So I'm looking forward to that.
35:00
This is my first expert here
35:01
but so far it's been great so far.
35:05
and I know for everybody
35:07
when you get to finally
35:09
see somebody's rig in person
35:14
you see all the photos
35:16
and it looks really cool
35:17
but then when you see it in person
35:19
it's like such a different
35:20
like different experience
35:23
and it always looks way cooler
35:24
in person, you know.
35:25
Oh yeah, absolutely.
35:27
Being able to put a name
35:28
to the face of the Instagram
35:29
but also put like a rig to the face.
35:32
Be able to see the rig in person
35:33
see the person behind it.
35:35
even so much better.
35:38
I'm definitely lucky that I've had
35:41
a whole bunch of rigs
35:42
that I've seen on Instagram
35:44
and be able to catch
35:46
up with a person and see
35:49
that person has done
35:52
see all their hard work
35:56
over to the Subaru space?
35:58
I stopped by several times
36:00
when they were setting
36:02
and I came by this morning
36:03
when they're putting
36:04
the finishing touches on it
36:05
it looked really good.
36:06
I have not been over
36:07
since the show opened.
36:10
a couple more rounds this afternoon.
36:12
So what are your thoughts
36:13
so far of the setup over there?
36:14
I think it's great.
36:15
There's a lot of cars
36:16
that bring you 26 outback
36:18
I want to check it out
36:21
You have some really cool
36:22
owners cars over there.
36:23
Definitely want to check out
36:24
why are there feels
36:25
and Troy T designs I believe.
36:31
absolutely beautiful
36:34
and definitely want to
36:35
spend some more time
36:37
and talk to some more people.
36:40
because they've got
36:42
for people to come in there
36:44
and I think it's really nice
36:45
how spread out it is, you know.
36:47
And it doesn't feel like
36:48
enclosed, you know.
36:52
it's much larger than I expected.
36:56
and they quick lap around
36:57
before everything opened.
37:03
a much larger footprint.
37:11
potential customers
37:13
open up that channel.
37:17
there's like a main aisle
37:21
So I think that gives them
37:22
a lot of really good exposure
37:28
naturally going to gravitate
37:30
go through the whole show
37:32
and what's really been
37:35
with the other events
37:37
the other expos that
37:39
is there are people
37:44
Subaru is going to be
37:46
what's even really cool
37:51
oh I didn't even know
37:52
Subaru is going to be here
37:54
and so they get excited
37:55
that Subaru is at the space
37:56
and I think everybody agrees
37:58
that they belong here.
37:59
I think I definitely agree
38:04
a Toyota in the Jeep
38:14
give them credit for
38:15
I think that Subaru
38:18
now more at the ordinances
38:32
and I think it's great
38:46
you could do all this stuff
38:48
and so it's really great
38:56
conversations with people
39:03
about the different
39:04
modifications I've done
39:15
make a better educated choice
39:17
well thanks for having
39:20
this you're my first
39:25
you know just kind of
39:27
chatting with some people
39:32
go over to the booth
39:35
because it was great
39:39
to all these events
39:42
the subi fest events
39:44
I drove up to Subaru flat
39:46
just getting to meet
39:52
I've just connected with
39:54
that I could potentially
39:55
have on the podcast
40:00
through social media
40:02
to meet that person
40:04
just super super cool
40:05
and it almost always
40:06
goes beyond a handshake
40:08
coming and bringing in
40:11
and then definitely
40:14
worked in amazing ways
40:16
you definitely be able to
40:18
create lasting friendships
40:19
doesn't matter you know
40:21
you just send a message
40:23
to get to meet that person
40:26
it makes it just that much
40:27
it's more important to me
40:30
and be able to talk in person
40:32
well thank you so much
40:34
absolutely thank you very much
40:43
so it's bittersweet
40:46
kind of going to be a little
40:49
I've met so many people
40:50
and these events are great
40:53
for bringing us out here
40:54
and being a part of this
41:06
getting out to this event
41:09
where you were coming from
41:11
what your experience
41:13
driving all the way out here
41:14
and maybe how many miles
41:16
it took you to get here
41:26
I'm Troy T. Designs
41:35
so we left on September 23rd
41:38
that was a while back
41:39
yeah we wanted to take some time
41:41
get out all the way
41:43
my wife and daughter
41:44
they kind of tap out
41:50
15-20 hours straight
41:54
most people look at me
41:59
some time to get out here
42:01
we stopped at a lot of places
42:03
we stopped in Flagstaff, Arizona
42:08
we drove straight to
42:15
we were there just for the night
42:17
and then from there
42:18
we drove straight to
42:19
Little Rock, Arkansas
42:22
and we went down to
42:23
had you been through there before
42:25
actually never been down
42:33
but nothing after New Mexico
42:35
so when we got to Little Rock
42:43
southwest of Little Rock
42:47
walking through this
42:53
they had like these little
42:57
that looked like little
42:59
I've been to Arkansas
43:01
because my daughter
43:02
went to school there
43:03
I didn't even know about that
43:04
I've been to Little Rock
43:11
sitting in our hotel
43:12
we're just scrolling
43:14
and all of a sudden
43:25
architectural design
43:29
becoming really popular online
43:32
Arkansas has a few of those
43:36
Anthony Chapel in Arkansas
43:37
and that's where my daughter
43:43
this garden had one
43:46
there was a couple more
43:54
architectural design
43:57
pretty proud of them
44:04
Arkansas we went straight
44:07
and we stayed a few days
44:10
and then we just came
44:12
there's this music festival
44:14
called the Pilgrimage
44:20
let's go grab tickets
44:22
we are making a good
44:25
because it's not just
44:26
straight for the show
44:28
we are actually on the road
44:33
and we're making a family
44:35
and we're doing a bunch
44:36
of other extra stuff
44:44
the tickets were like
44:47
okay we gotta go to this
44:59
do all the downtown stuff
45:02
didn't know what to expect
45:05
not expecting it to be
45:12
if you get a chance
45:27
I'll have to ask her about it
45:33
and just Tennessee in general
45:35
I'd love to go there
45:36
if you get a chance
45:38
you won't regret it
45:40
yeah it's beautiful
45:53
ended up coming straight to Virginia
45:57
at the Overline Expo East
46:00
just with the drive itself
46:01
or with your outback
46:13
dude you're good to go
46:17
we did the whole nine
46:19
we're getting ready to do
46:22
and we kind of like
46:25
and the 80,000 miles
46:28
we better go do this
46:40
outback willingness
47:02
I want to see how many
47:03
miles I can get on it
47:06
asked me all the time
47:07
why are you putting
47:15
miles don't scare me
47:28
to check out the expo
47:33
so that's where we're at
47:34
on our trip right now
47:36
yeah that's a good trip
47:46
when we were in Colorado
47:49
because you had like
47:50
issues with your shoulder
47:53
how was that on this trip
47:58
conversation went south
48:06
going up to Colorado
48:08
and I was in a sling
48:09
you know the whole weekend
48:12
but we couldn't do anything
48:13
because our doctors
48:16
and so when I got back
48:54
okay I'll have work
49:01
they do it all the time
49:02
they've been doing it
49:12
they wrap it around
49:27
cannot move my shoulder
49:30
have to bandage my arm
49:33
around my body every day
49:34
because I cannot move
49:42
of physical therapy
49:45
after the physical therapy
49:55
but I have to take it
50:01
that's 3 months long
50:04
recovery after that
50:05
but this is the doctor
50:08
after the first doctor
50:10
you're gonna have to get
50:11
all this stuff done
50:12
all this long recovery time
50:14
that with this doctor
50:15
he's telling you're
50:17
you trust what he says
50:20
works on like a lot of
50:21
athletes and stuff too
50:25
the soccer athletes
50:27
like all those guys
50:33
those guys wouldn't
50:45
I'm going straight to him
50:48
unfortunately this one
50:49
I have to get surgery
50:53
it's probably what's
50:54
gonna be for the best
50:58
sleeping's uncomfortable
50:59
driving's uncomfortable
51:02
not supposed to come out
51:04
he wasn't too excited
51:07
you have to give me
51:09
I can still get it done
51:10
just give me some time
51:18
because you've been
51:19
to all of the expos this year
51:21
they're pretty much
51:23
the same at every event
51:24
the only thing that's
51:26
is the factory vehicles
51:31
because they're getting
51:40
everything is set up here
51:42
what are the things
51:44
potentially do differently
51:55
it's corporate Subaru
52:00
that's a really big thing
52:05
at photos and footage
52:07
are coming to the booth
52:08
and they're excited
52:09
that Subaru is doing this
52:12
comfort of just like
52:14
intimidated walking in
52:20
show your Subaru key
52:22
and come into the little lounge
52:25
we're sitting in the lounge
52:30
yeah there's snacks
52:33
I feel a little VIP
52:45
off the top of my head
52:50
I mean they did such a
52:55
we've got Rihanna and
52:56
Gelsamino doing a talk
52:58
which is super cool
53:09
we'll get to see that
53:17
like the customer base
53:22
like owner vehicles
53:34
they can come to us
53:35
and ask us questions
53:40
modified or something
53:42
maybe they've never seen
53:44
and then they come by
53:46
well you can do that
53:50
somebody that doesn't
53:52
or somebody that does
53:54
maybe they bought their
53:58
I've talked to people
54:05
they've been coming
54:07
that's why they wanted
54:09
like oh I want to go see
54:11
and then there's been people
54:16
that Subaru was going to be here
54:17
and so they go to the Expo
54:20
Subaru was going to be here
54:22
but I think you can
54:23
get a lot of people
54:27
are just a daily driver
54:32
that you can do with them
54:34
obviously they're being built
54:36
and maybe people have never
54:37
really thought about doing that
54:39
they can talk to people
54:41
I never really thought of that
54:42
but maybe that's something
54:43
I'd be interested in
54:45
now the wheels are spinning
54:47
but then also learning too
54:55
that's what's surprising
55:00
is in the Overland Expo
55:02
kind of like a little
55:07
a little underrated
55:12
you think over anything
55:13
the mid-sized trucks
55:15
the Jeeps and stuff
55:19
are completely capable
55:20
so much more than what
55:24
because when I bought mine
55:27
and then when you start
55:28
adding a bunch of little stuff
55:32
of doing some stuff
55:36
my trucks back in the day
55:38
but I don't rock climb anymore
55:39
I don't do anything
55:40
crazy crazy anymore
55:42
this is like a perfect vehicle
55:51
that Jeeps and trucks can
55:56
well and the thing is too
55:59
a lot of fun with these
56:01
that you just can't
56:06
I had a front wheel drive car
56:08
and there were places
56:10
when we would go off
56:11
to our family reunion
56:17
I can't get up this road
56:24
if I already had a cross-track
56:25
I knew I could get up this road
56:26
and it wasn't anything
56:31
wouldn't be able to make it
56:37
like having experienced
56:38
especially the all-wheel drive
56:42
this car is so amazing
56:44
oh and also let's add
56:46
that's about your cross-track
56:50
you don't see too many of those
56:52
I'm like hanging on to it
56:56
do you have anything else
57:05
you know we'll be back
57:08
maybe with the same car
57:10
maybe a different setup
57:11
I don't know who knows
57:14
yeah we're just excited
57:16
because we're going to continue
57:21
all the way up the coast
57:23
cutting through Vermont
57:25
and back to Michigan
57:31
well this has been great for me
57:33
and I'm sure for you too
57:34
to meet a lot of people
57:35
that you've probably connected
57:36
with through Instagram
57:38
because you're going to
57:39
different parts of the country
57:40
and getting to meet those people
57:42
in person for the first time
57:46
with all of the events
57:47
except for California
57:48
and you being at all of the events
57:52
the same people again
57:54
like it's great seeing you again
57:59
anybody that's been involved
58:00
with each of the events
58:05
oh I'm going to get to see
58:06
all these people again
58:07
and then I know I'm going to get
58:11
and that's what's been great
58:12
about being a part of this
58:15
it's the Subaru community
58:18
I met a gentleman here
58:21
dude I've been following you
58:26
I mean I'm nobody big
58:29
to meet like other people
58:34
I've been following you
58:41
not like a soccer kind of way
58:43
the community is amazing
58:46
well thanks for taking the time
58:52
and getting to travel
58:53
to all these events
58:56
and meeting your family
59:00
and be a part of this
59:16
of Overland Expo East
59:20
and it's bittersweet
59:21
yeah it's definitely
59:23
we've been super happy
59:24
to be a part of all of them
59:27
all over the country
59:28
meeting awesome people
59:29
and talking about Subaru
59:30
is the thing we love
59:42
at all these events
59:47
helping people with
59:49
learn more about them
59:52
from Subaru America
59:53
that have been coming
59:56
that we follow on Instagram
59:57
that we haven't met in person yet
59:59
we've met new people
00:01
and it's always really exciting
00:02
to have those conversations
00:04
so what I wanted to ask you
00:07
to every single event
00:13
each individual one
00:15
because for the most part
00:16
the setups are the same
00:18
I know we were talking
00:24
we had a little more space
00:25
in front of the owner's lounge
00:28
quite a bit more space
00:29
in front of the owner lounge
00:35
but we got less space
00:36
no umbrellas this time
00:39
for all of the events
00:54
this is generally being
00:56
is through the summer
00:57
summer months give or take
00:59
and everywhere we go
01:00
there's been a lot of sun
01:05
and being able to have
01:06
a space for people to come
01:09
like we've talked about
01:12
kind of get out of that
01:13
and relax a little bit
01:16
that's been really awesome
01:22
I'm stepping in a booth
01:23
people are trying to sell me things
01:24
and they have to get away
01:25
because they're going to
01:26
just keep talking to me
01:27
you know it feels a little
01:29
and I think that's big
01:31
and with what they love
01:36
the Subaru Love Promise
01:38
what makes a Subaru
01:41
so I definitely love
01:48
people the opportunity
01:50
about their vehicle
01:51
you know at the end of the day
01:52
everybody loves their car
01:53
that's here I think
01:59
everybody wants to do something
02:01
so being able to kind of
02:02
see different vehicles
02:03
ask different questions
02:06
I think is super awesome
02:09
so what are some things
02:11
maybe didn't work so well
02:15
differently next year
02:21
it would be nice to have
02:25
and this isn't necessarily
02:26
Subaru's fault here
02:28
it'd be nice to have some
02:30
to throw some stuff away
02:32
take care of it nicely
02:39
they have that awesome
02:45
of Subaru events personally
02:46
I'd love to see that here
02:48
it's hot like I said once again
02:50
would love to have water here
02:52
I know they have the
02:53
owner lounge with drinks
02:55
but I think if they made
02:56
that accessible to everybody
02:58
then that would be good
03:01
especially along the lines
03:02
of the Subaru loves pets
03:05
we have all the toys
03:13
for animals as well
03:15
a couple of water bowls
03:17
a couple more around
03:18
I think it would be really cool
03:20
I think that would be sick
03:23
I just love having the
03:25
and I think if we can continue
03:27
that would do really well
03:32
you know I feel like
03:33
we've had a tendency
03:36
which makes total sense
03:37
you know it's Subaru's
03:38
pride vehicle right now
03:41
obviously we're getting the
03:42
new one this coming year
03:44
which we do have here
03:45
which has been super exciting
03:46
to just pay attention to
03:48
see the things I like
03:49
see the things I don't like
03:51
and just kind of get an idea
03:53
but I would love to see
03:58
we have three outbacks
03:59
a forest during a cross check
04:00
it's pretty diverse
04:02
one of the events we had
04:07
not that I hate outbacks
04:10
but it would be cool to see
04:12
maybe a lifted Impreza
04:15
I'd love to see something like that
04:16
that would be really cool
04:18
I've met a lot of people
04:19
who love their ascents
04:20
and they want to know
04:21
if there's a wilderness coming out
04:23
if a wilderness ascent
04:24
is going to come or not
04:25
but you can totally show off
04:28
and I think that'd be super cool
04:29
and that was a cool
04:31
the fact that you mentioned
04:33
because there's probably
04:35
maybe have never seen that
04:37
and didn't even know
04:38
that you can do that
04:40
and so I think that would be
04:41
definitely a good one
04:43
yeah and especially when
04:44
you go into the Subaru space
04:47
or into the overland
04:48
off-road Subaru space
04:49
from the performance sector
04:51
from that street oriented
04:56
that you love so much
04:59
and can look super sick
05:03
would be really sick
05:04
and I think a lot of people
05:05
would really appreciate it
05:06
and bring people in
05:07
bring a lot of interest
05:09
hopefully next year
05:10
we can build something
05:13
and then last question is
05:22
that you would like to see
05:29
that we attend again
05:30
absolutely so my number one
05:34
you know it's my hometown
05:37
we'll call it right
05:38
it's not quite hometown
05:39
but P&W is definitely
05:43
the terrain around is awesome
05:45
the food vendors are great
05:47
you know you're missing
05:48
some of your food vendors
05:49
from that particular event
05:51
I'm missing some of my
05:53
absolutely love that
05:56
and the other thing too
05:57
it was so close to the entrance
05:59
so as people are coming in
06:00
they're passing right
06:01
by the Subaru space
06:03
so I think that was
06:04
just a very prime event
06:07
would love to go back
06:10
Arizona would probably
06:11
be my next favorite
06:13
I mean it's the biggest
06:14
event of the year right
06:17
relatively cool area
06:20
it's a little windy
06:25
just enjoy the space
06:27
a break in the wind
06:28
or a break in the weather
06:33
camping is of course
06:34
but everything else
06:40
would probably be Colorado
06:41
I really like Colorado
06:42
that one was a good one too
06:43
the mountain passes are great
06:46
so the journey was awesome
06:51
terrain change in it
06:54
get a chance to run around
06:55
and enjoy some really good food
06:57
but everything's kind of
06:58
mixed amongst itself
07:01
I feel like it's very much
07:02
you go here for this
07:04
and here for that type of stuff
07:07
so you get an opportunity
07:09
that you wouldn't otherwise
07:11
so I think that's a really cool
07:14
so just those three
07:15
those are my three favorites
07:16
those are my three favorites
07:17
I'm not going to go into
07:19
but those are definitely my
07:21
alright that's good
07:25
anything else you want to add
07:26
I mean after this whole
07:29
I'm just super happy
07:30
that we got to come
07:35
really all-wheel drives
07:37
but specifically of course
07:38
and I just hope that next year
07:40
we can come back even stronger
07:41
come back with more
07:42
educational stuff along
07:43
you know on my side of things
07:44
and really help people
07:48
maybe we'll figure out
07:49
what people want to learn
07:52
maybe there's some stuff
07:54
they're interested in learning
07:55
so we can put together
07:57
seminars and programs
07:58
and maybe some more
07:59
live demonstrations
08:00
maybe some driving classes
08:02
an on-course driving class
08:03
that'd be super cool
08:06
yeah I'll get people
08:07
on the wheel of either their
08:09
or maybe even a factory
08:11
maybe that could be really sick
08:13
some fun stuff next year
08:15
well thank you for sharing
08:19
like I said it's been fun
08:24
and Kerry unfortunately
08:26
because the Rebell rally
08:34
Subaru included me in this
08:35
and that I've had a chance
08:37
a lot of different people
08:38
and meet new people
08:43
definitely excited to
09:02
and I'm sitting here
09:12
considered coming before
09:13
and didn't work out
09:15
I'm glad to be here
09:19
your Orbis Overlanding
09:25
maybe if we want to
09:44
if you've had a chance
09:45
to walk around much
09:46
but what do you think
09:50
to see all the different
09:56
walk around a little bit
09:58
because I've been pretty
09:59
busy talking with people
10:04
can't complain about that
10:06
it's been a little warm
10:07
it's been a little warm
10:11
it's summertime ish
10:16
we're sitting in the
10:17
shade and there's a nice
10:19
and it feels really good
10:20
yeah this is a good spot
10:21
it's been really nice
10:30
of your other podcasts
10:31
over the last few weeks
10:32
it's been a nice spot
10:33
nice little lounge area
10:42
I mean I know this is your
10:44
that you've been to
10:46
do you see anything
10:48
potentially do different
10:50
differently for next year
10:54
with things if I thought
11:00
something pretty good
11:03
would be nice maybe
11:08
I'd have to put some thought
11:14
and chairs under the
11:15
umbrellas so that was
11:17
I do miss that about
11:26
yeah I wonder if there's
11:32
we've got five cars
11:45
went pretty far out
11:54
this one is a little
11:57
thinking about that
11:58
and talking to other
11:59
owners here is kind of
12:08
of course the owner lounge
12:13
they've definitely plugged
12:16
the fact that you're
12:18
looking at the things
12:24
giving away the stuff
12:26
they're taking a picture
12:34
and some of the other brands
12:41
or overlandish brands
12:46
they just don't have
12:49
and I've heard that
12:50
from a lot of people
12:56
so what did you think
12:58
Subaru set up over there
12:59
yeah that works good
13:04
when Subaru does this
13:07
and interact with other
13:25
you know other types of
13:28
you just have that ability
13:30
with a little propane fire
13:32
fireside conversation
13:40
with having your car
13:44
I get a lot of compliments
13:47
I've got a lot of time
13:48
and I've heard in the
13:49
end of what I built out
13:50
to make it functional
13:56
and think it's cool
13:58
I got to share it with
14:01
neat and got to share
14:02
kind of my story with her
14:06
it's fun for someone
14:09
about what I've done
14:11
she's not an overlander
14:19
she understands the
14:20
passion that goes into it
14:23
so to be able to share
14:32
you had Scott Speed
14:33
asking you about stuff
14:45
people have asked the most
14:48
of different things
14:50
my bumper gets everybody's attention
14:53
kind of ironic in some ways
14:56
I intended to build that as a product
14:59
and the shipping has just become
15:06
I haven't been able to
15:07
turn it into a product
15:20
when I can start to share
15:22
kind of the other pieces
15:28
you know everybody's kind of like
15:34
you know I had a couple people
15:35
it was actually funny
15:36
the same thing where
15:37
like I'm talking to them
15:38
and then I make a comment
15:40
and this is my product
15:42
it was like one of those
15:47
like this is a sponsored car
15:49
well yeah I know that's
15:55
those moments are always nice
16:00
this isn't just a sponsored car
16:01
that showed up it's
16:02
yeah that's really cool
16:03
anything else you want to share
16:05
about your experience so far
16:06
I mean I know this is
16:07
kind of early into it
16:09
I kind of wanted to do that
16:17
and some of the other guys
16:18
getting into Milton
16:19
has been a lot of fun
16:25
I mean I got to do some
16:37
the next couple days
16:38
yeah and it's nice to
16:40
because I haven't seen you
16:53
enjoyed about that too
16:54
is we had some time
16:55
afterwards me, you and Jen
16:57
to go have breakfast
16:59
just with the three of us
17:01
and we went to dinner
17:05
that was really a lot of fun
17:09
and did a million times
17:11
one of my favorite things
17:12
is getting to finally
17:14
that you've connected with
17:17
that you've started
17:18
a relationship with
17:21
if you have an opportunity
17:26
nobody's been able to see
17:28
because I just can't
17:30
take the time to drive out
17:35
and that was fun for me
17:37
I'm here in my own car
17:40
I wish I could be here
17:43
it would be possible
17:45
wasn't too far away
17:46
Flagstaff isn't too far away
17:49
it's definitely a possibility
17:54
to be here in my own car
17:58
that's what's important
18:01
well thank you so much
18:02
for hopping on the mic
18:03
and chatting for a little bit
18:05
it's been fun so far
18:07
it's been great to see you again
18:13
yeah all right thank you
18:18
it was really really great
18:19
seeing Patrick again
18:21
I hadn't seen him since
18:25
so that was really great
18:28
so that was the end
18:34
where if you want to
18:36
and listen to day two
18:38
and day three later on
18:41
we had a conversation
18:42
because it was really really slow
18:47
I needed to get to the airport
18:49
and he needed to get a hotel
18:52
so that he could fly out
18:54
so we ended up leaving
18:58
a little bit after one
18:59
which worked out great
19:01
got there just in time
19:03
and he got his hotel
19:06
worked out with that
19:12
conversations with people
19:21
and I'm sitting here
19:24
a cool little company
19:39
it's really neat to see
19:41
variations people do
19:44
but since this isn't
19:45
a Subaru specific event
19:46
I actually get to see
19:47
some other really neat
20:01
yeah I'm very happy
20:03
the weather's gorgeous
20:05
so what do you think
20:06
like I know you said
20:12
the feel of the Subaru
20:15
what somebody called it
20:25
from this perspective
20:34
hard camping chairs
20:37
I always love Subaru
20:47
overwhelming frills
20:50
they give you that space
20:54
and they aren't like
21:07
how did you get here
21:08
and then what has your
21:09
experience been like
21:14
with Patrick McKinney
21:15
through Orbus Overlanding
21:18
SoFly car window rainfly
21:24
he could help me get
21:32
about the opportunity
21:35
experience my first Expo
21:37
my first Overland Expo
21:40
it's even more special
21:41
being able to camp with
21:42
a bunch of really cool
21:45
setup Subaru's over there
21:50
you know bought my products
21:52
yeah that's so cool
21:53
I met at Wicked Big Meet
22:03
but also camp together
22:11
I'm surprised at how warm
22:12
it is during the days
22:13
yeah it's cool at night
22:31
for sleeping in the car
22:32
that awesome product
22:40
with you at some point
22:48
want to go too much
22:51
absolutely thank you
23:02
selling it to the public
23:11
and fits over the window
23:14
attaches with magnets
23:23
and that peace of mind
23:32
positive experience
23:33
when they're sleeping
23:43
and I'm sure you sell them
23:45
so that each window
23:51
in less than a year
23:55
support and feedback
23:58
I couldn't be happier
24:01
an issue for yourself
24:03
you get to help other people
24:06
experience that you did
24:08
to know that something
24:10
that you were looking for
24:13
is something that other
24:14
people were looking
24:16
improve their experiences
24:20
both in the community
24:21
involved in the community
24:22
and offering a product
24:28
over at Camp Subaru
24:41
at their R&D facility
24:44
yeah so I was there
24:46
and so I actually met
24:50
so chatting with him
24:57
his food is delicious
25:06
I think we're having smoked
25:10
I know you're a vegan
25:13
he had butternut squash
25:18
because I talked to him
25:25
making some potatoes
25:27
but he was mixing in
25:30
do you have any potatoes
25:34
with seasoning or something
25:38
he said no we're out
25:43
we're going to have
25:46
a mix of coconut milk
25:47
we're going to have
25:49
and then we're going to
25:53
we're going to have
25:55
it wasn't really cooked
25:58
yes those were so good
26:03
real mushy and soft
26:04
yeah that's so gross
26:07
and they were still
26:12
they have texture still
26:13
yeah they still have texture
26:21
I hate cooked carrots
26:24
the cooking was amazing
26:26
oh they were so good
26:27
his cooking is really great
26:28
and it was nice to chat with him
26:30
prior to this event
26:31
because I have celiac disease
26:32
so I can't eat any wheat
26:41
and dairy intolerant
26:45
these dietary issues
26:49
such a breath of fresh air
26:51
for people like you
26:55
you go to these events
26:56
and you just bring food
26:59
you can't eat any of it
27:00
so it's so refreshing
27:01
to be able to actually
27:02
enjoy the same meal
27:03
that everyone else is having
27:04
that's been really special
27:07
it's good when you can
27:08
find something like that
27:10
and then when you can
27:13
what's going on with you
27:15
oh well we can actually
27:21
he was so nice about it
27:22
he got that response too
27:25
I can't help it I'm sorry
27:29
but it's the same case you know
27:32
it's been such a great
27:36
all these expo events
27:40
like people like Milton
27:42
that have been traveling
27:43
around to the different ones
27:44
to meet so many people
27:45
that we've connected with
27:47
and get to meet them
27:50
it's such a full circle
27:51
and then getting to meet people
27:53
like see people again
27:54
that I haven't seen in a long time
28:01
N.R. the underscore
28:04
from Orbis Overlanding
28:05
I've met both of them
28:09
and there's some other people
28:10
that I had met previously
28:11
like Andrew Compton
28:15
being able to be a part
28:18
with all these people
28:19
and connect with brands
28:20
that are running the event
28:24
that are involved in this
28:27
it's been a really cool
28:28
networking opportunity
28:30
very much it's been
28:31
I can definitely echo
28:34
you know these people
28:37
what their cars look like
28:39
Instagram handle is
28:40
and to like meet them
28:42
put a face to the car
28:43
and face to the name
28:47
it feels so solidifying
28:50
social media friends
28:52
we're friends in real life
28:53
like this is awesome
29:00
it's a little awkward
29:04
because I've had people
29:19
I don't respect that
29:24
if they come up to me
29:25
and start talking to me
29:27
because they listen
29:31
and I feel bad about it
29:32
it's a little awkward
29:34
trying to make friends
29:36
when all your friends
29:38
but then as soon as
29:40
their Instagram handle
29:49
okay introduce himself
29:50
and I'm looking at his car
29:51
and then I look over
30:00
like you see some of these
30:08
the two dimensional
30:12
the full experience
30:14
Pat's car in person
30:16
of being I was like
30:19
uh I want to emulate you
30:24
anything else you want to add
30:26
glad Subaru is here
30:28
that they're embracing
30:30
and off-roading community
30:34
like it feels natural
30:36
like it's meant to be
30:43
exposure for Subaru
30:48
you're excited about it
30:52
thank you for hopping on the mic
30:57
so I'm sitting here
31:15
your apprehensiveness
31:17
of getting a Subaru
31:18
so kind of talk about
31:21
got you into the Subaru
31:30
talking about having children
31:31
and I needed to get
31:32
something that was a
31:33
little more practical
31:37
in southwest Virginia
31:40
and I wanted something
31:43
and not too capable
31:53
and I wanted something
32:08
you should buy that
32:12
with a new one this year
32:14
a wilderness edition
32:15
let's go look at it
32:16
so he took me to the car
32:27
and I've been driving
32:30
what color did you get
32:37
about the wilderness
32:41
not getting a Subaru
32:46
dead set against it
32:50
of it the way it looks
32:56
contrast of the colors
32:57
with the wilderness
33:07
that I've put on mine
33:30
that's great to hear
33:35
before you bought it
33:45
I gotta have one of these
33:46
it wasn't till I saw
33:51
this is what we're doing
33:53
I'm sure you've taken it
34:02
gonna be as capable
34:12
National Forest Roads
34:14
and my husband's like
34:31
the all-wheel drive
34:40
I've never driven it
34:49
middle of a mud puddle
35:03
until they actually
35:06
and that Subaru's like
35:14
that you're thinking
35:21
a big German shepherd
35:37
it's probably going to be
35:40
able to do something
35:41
but it's in my mind
35:45
figuring out what I want
35:51
keep going with the Subaru
36:02
community out there
36:03
until I bought mine
36:06
watching YouTube videos
36:10
a cross track as my next car
36:12
because I live in Houston
36:13
so we don't get snow
36:14
but I was watching videos
36:17
driving through snow
36:19
those kind of videos
36:21
because I just wanted to
36:27
driving through snow
36:34
other Subarus in snow
36:35
just from traveling
36:36
and meeting up with other people
36:38
that they're pretty awesome
36:46
I haven't gotten to
36:52
some of these accessories
36:57
three owner vehicles
37:11
forester wilderness over here
37:13
outback wilderness over here
37:16
we definitely want to check that out
37:18
what we all like about it
37:19
is one of the things
37:20
that we like about it the most
37:21
is the owner and the
37:23
because we've got a place to sit
37:24
we've got the shade
37:27
so it's really cool
37:29
well thank you so much Amy
37:31
for taking the time to chat
37:36
where would you like to sit
37:44
yeah I was sweating there
37:52
it was just over there
37:55
directly in the sun
37:58
isn't really covering
38:03
thank you for doing this
38:08
that's a good flash
38:09
I know I love these
38:10
look at the upgrade you're making
38:11
I know it's so cool
38:14
so I'm sitting here
38:15
with Rihanna and Gelsamino
38:16
at Overland Expo East
38:19
are you not sick of me yet
38:24
I have a lot of fun
38:26
else enjoys talking
38:28
talking to you as well
38:29
thank you for coming out
38:31
no problem it's been a lot
38:33
we've done two rally 101
38:35
they were packed to house
38:38
when you come to an
38:42
I guess it's off-roading
38:44
but it's a different form
38:45
so it's really cool
38:46
to see so many people
38:50
and great questions
38:51
and all those sort of
39:01
and promote it more
39:08
listening to you talk
39:09
talk about rally 101
39:11
you were talking about
39:12
some of the different
39:15
and you and your dad
39:23
just sitting around
39:28
can you kind of go through
39:30
that like you and travis
39:31
say that are different
39:32
the words that you say
39:34
than like you and your dad
39:35
because that was just
39:36
really really funny
39:38
like I've lived over here
39:50
yeah that makes sense
39:57
can you turn it down
40:06
they did not tell me
40:08
it was a preemptive
40:11
we'll put it back on in a second
40:13
don't worry I'm sorry
40:27
yeah I've been living here since 2012
40:29
and I still use a lot of
40:31
which is quite funny
40:32
and I was saying yesterday
40:33
when you guys were all
40:34
cracking up as we say
40:38
I'm so busy in America
40:39
I don't get to go home
40:40
to Australia very often
40:41
and I'll go home to
40:48
I guess is a good way
40:56
and I'll accidentally be like
40:57
dad can you hand me
41:01
dad can you hand me
41:03
they're not french fries
41:07
hey you live in America
41:08
but you're still Australian
41:10
getting my citizenship
41:12
make sure you still race
41:13
under an Australian flag
41:15
yes that's really important to me
41:16
like I'm a dual citizen
41:20
everyone in America
41:21
hears me as an Australian
41:23
you know any type of
41:25
I go home and family is like
41:26
oh you're starting to sound
41:29
I definitely don't think
41:32
I slow down my speech
41:34
a little bit I guess
41:35
but there's so many
41:41
I call the hood a bonnet
41:46
sheet if I've written
41:47
something about bonnet
41:50
but it was pretty funny
42:03
you just don't think
42:05
the English language
42:07
different words for it
42:09
and then I was saying
42:12
make a post on Facebook
42:14
text my mum or something
42:24
here we don't have the U
42:26
like have you forgotten
42:30
forgotten how to spell
42:34
and takes out the U
42:38
like I was talking about
42:40
Bluey's teaching the kids
42:43
and the last letter
42:49
so apparently there's
42:51
saying the alphabet wrong
42:53
they go blah blah blah
42:55
they get to the end
42:57
and the teacher's like
42:59
and then they'll say
43:02
so it's quite funny
43:04
like this little cartoon
43:07
rally car last year
43:08
was actually called Bluey
43:09
so we had some funny
43:11
about some of the things
43:13
and the words they use
43:16
yes I've lived here
43:19
Australian and American
43:20
I still get confused
43:22
lingo that's different
43:25
yeah and then you said
43:30
because like when I had you
43:32
you were saying something
43:35
okay that's a little
43:38
when I spell my name
43:41
what did you just say
43:43
Ken Block was around
43:47
and all three of his kids
43:56
my Australian accent
43:58
instead of it being
44:04
and so Ken used to think
44:06
he would walk around going
44:15
and we were all laughing
44:19
and Kira working on the team
44:21
Lia you still see our name
44:26
yeah cause I've noticed
44:31
I guess that's just
44:32
obviously an Australian
44:33
thing the way that you
44:46
oh what's it called
44:47
it's basically a show
44:50
like people's rides
44:53
I think it's a British show
44:54
and they're always saying
44:55
like the boot and the bonnet
44:56
you know and all this
44:57
and so we're watching
44:59
first of all we love
45:02
Australian accents too
45:08
words and everything
45:16
we call it an elevator
45:17
they call it a lift
45:21
they call it a flat
45:23
I think we said something
45:24
about parking yesterday too
45:27
parking lot and you guys
45:31
that's another funny one
45:37
and so the engineers
45:42
and now they're used to
45:43
when I first started
45:44
working with Subaru Motorsport USA
45:46
you spell tyre wrong
45:49
no you spell tyre wrong
45:50
so we have a little bit
45:51
of a debate who's wrong
45:54
that's a drive shaft
45:56
no it's a drive shaft
46:00
we'll go with her terms
46:01
we know what she means
46:06
pace notes and stuff
46:08
troubles at the beginning
46:13
he likes to use this thing called
46:15
Schleft and Schreit
46:18
an absolute mouthful
46:22
I really struggle with it
46:24
a few times he's had
46:29
when you're at speed
46:30
and you're trying to
46:44
when it's a fast section
46:50
I think that would be hard
46:56
and we just used short
46:57
but he was telling me
47:06
oh it's a lot going on
47:07
so it's always fun though
47:08
and we get a good laugh
47:10
all these different things
47:12
and I think that's the fun
47:13
part about travelling
47:19
or friends come over
47:21
oh they call it a hotel
47:23
we always say motel
47:25
here everyone's like
47:26
I wouldn't say in the motel
47:31
whatever we always call
47:33
and a hotel is more
47:38
a motel for us is usually
47:41
so it's quite funny
47:42
so my friends were like
47:43
oh they kept saying
47:46
it is quite funny that
47:47
we're all speaking English
47:48
but there's little you know
47:50
that make it a little bit different
47:52
the experience you have
47:56
I forgot about that
47:58
so I was really excited
47:59
I wanted to take dad
48:01
I actually really like
48:03
because I'm a country girl
48:05
so I enjoy meatloaf
48:09
all those sort of things
48:11
oh dad's coming over
48:12
I'll take him to Cracker Barrel
48:14
it'll be like a good
48:15
country Australian meal
48:18
he's looking at the menu
48:21
what would you like to drink
48:22
and the first thing
48:23
that happens is pretty funny
48:24
because I say Coke Zero
48:33
and so that was funny
48:34
because the lady couldn't
48:35
understand my order
48:36
so I slowed down and said
48:38
oh you want Coke Zero
48:43
can I get white with one
48:44
and she looks at him
48:46
sorry we don't have that
48:50
no you don't have that
48:51
and I look and I say
49:00
so we've started off
49:02
with this poor lady
49:04
and gets our Coke Zero
49:05
and our white with one
49:08
what would you like to eat
49:13
and mashed potatoes
49:14
and gravy and whatnot
49:19
well if you know anything
49:22
biscuits is a cookie
49:27
why would I have a biscuit
49:30
he's picturing a cookie
49:31
he's picturing a cookie
49:34
chocolate chip cookie
49:38
refer to more like a scone
49:42
it's like my grandma's scones
49:45
why would you call it
49:47
and the lady's like
49:48
I've got no idea sir
49:49
so then she comes back
49:50
and she's got the biscuits
49:52
and my dad gets into
49:54
and the poor lady's like
49:56
I've got no idea sir
49:58
what is going on at this table
50:00
I'm gonna give this to you
50:01
you can handle this table
50:04
and in Australia it's very common to have
50:06
virtually what those biscuits are
50:10
then like you whip your cream
50:11
you put your jam on top
50:13
my grandma would always make a forest
50:14
for like what we call morning tea
50:17
usually you might start work
50:19
and then you work till nine
50:20
you'll have morning tea
50:21
and then you'll go to twelve
50:23
which will be lunch
50:25
and then you get to three
50:26
and you'll have afternoon tea
50:27
so you'll have scones
50:30
and then you get to lunch
50:32
we sort of break it down that way
50:33
so dad thought it was great
50:34
because cracker barrel had virtually
50:36
what his mother's scones were
50:38
even though we call them
50:39
a little bit different
50:40
I forgot about that one
50:42
they're really good
50:43
they're scones or biscuits
50:46
but they're very good
50:47
and I actually had it the other day
50:49
oh when I was driving here
50:50
there was one on the way
50:53
I think I'll get cracker barrel
50:54
do you like send a picture
50:56
look I'm having some biscuits
50:57
my brother still thinks it's funny
50:58
because my dad hasn't been over
51:00
it's nearly been three years
51:03
Travis flew him over
51:07
so he put us in the RV
51:08
in the middle of the track
51:09
it was absolutely phenomenal
51:11
like I couldn't ask for
51:12
a better Christmas present
51:13
and my dad had the best time ever
51:15
and the cracker barrel
51:16
was right next to the track
51:18
so that's how that all happened
51:19
because every morning
51:20
we'd get in a golf cart
51:23
the whole team knew
51:24
about this joke with dad
51:25
so it was a funny running joke
51:28
so then when we'd go
51:29
each morning they're like
51:30
hey Mike you want a white we won
51:33
so he was doing his best
51:34
to say it the American way
51:37
well it sounds like he had a good time
51:39
he had a great time
51:41
and it was really cool for Travis
51:44
like that's so nice
51:45
yeah he knew dad loves
51:47
yeah that's a good thing
51:50
Travis is such a great guy
51:52
I think that's the cool thing
51:55
he's just a chilled
51:59
there's so many fans
52:00
and that's why Subaru is
52:01
I think it's been 21 years
52:05
to work with an athlete
52:14
if you want to call it that
52:16
and for him to still be
52:19
and be so much about the fans
52:24
you want to see that
52:25
with more people at his level
52:29
and I think that thing is
52:30
that a lot of people
52:31
just assume athletes
52:33
with millions of followers
52:38
I'm still an everyday person
52:40
he said I was just lucky
52:44
and I am where I am
52:45
you know what I mean
52:46
so I think that's why
52:47
he's just like a brother
52:49
so I think it's why
52:50
we get along so well
52:52
you know he respects me
52:54
we've both got a job
52:57
get to hang out with fans
52:59
and sign autographs
53:00
and do all those fun things
53:02
it means that we get to
53:04
from the other side as well
53:05
which is really cool
53:07
and like when I had him
53:10
cause like so many people
53:12
were like you gotta
53:13
get him on the podcast
53:15
I can't just make it happen
53:21
knowing the right people
53:23
thankfully and unthankfully
53:26
which was perfect for that
53:33
I was somewhat intimidated
53:35
but then at the same time
53:36
like as I'm talking to him
53:39
like he is just another person
53:42
because he's worked hard
53:44
but at the end of the day
53:45
yeah he's still another person
53:47
so nice to be able to
53:53
I haven't been around him
53:55
so many other people
53:56
is you never get this sense of
54:01
I don't have any more time for you
54:03
I know he over extends his time
54:04
signing autographs and stuff
54:06
yeah he's good like that
54:07
he's actually an Australia
54:08
at the moment doing some work
54:11
working with a team
54:12
that's actually driving the truck
54:15
Australian rally champion
54:16
and I wake up to the messages
54:19
you know Simon Evans
54:22
you should know Simon Evans
54:23
they're like the truck driver
54:24
he's one of Australia's best
54:25
every rally drivers
54:26
and they're like what
54:28
Simon Evans is four times
54:29
Australian rally champion
54:32
he raced my brother
54:34
he's an absolute legend
54:35
and the nice thing was
54:39
this team is amazing
54:42
very much sports car
54:46
with how he talks with them
54:47
and works with them
54:51
it's a really cool team
54:53
I'm really proud of
54:55
the opportunity I have over here
54:56
and how hard I've worked
54:59
Simon's known me since a little girl
55:03
and I was so proud to think
55:04
how cool that he doesn't
55:06
they needed a truck driver
55:10
while they're over there
55:11
Simon had the capabilities
55:12
but he didn't go there
55:14
hey I'm Simon Evans
55:16
Toyota factory team driver
55:17
who's won this many champion
55:21
so I thought it was cool
55:22
I was sort of messaging
55:24
do you know this guy
55:25
he said he knows you
55:30
I think that in our sport
55:32
admit that I feel like
55:34
where we don't have
55:38
which I think is why
55:39
we all love it as well
55:43
it's just such a good thing
55:44
to be a part of too
55:45
and with Subaru of course
55:48
Subaru has been amazing
55:50
I started with a team
55:52
in this conversation yesterday
55:54
I always tell people
55:59
like you have to be here
56:01
we're here with Subaru USA
56:05
I went from co-driving
56:08
you know I did a talk
56:09
at the Subaru headquarters
56:14
I come to the Overland events
56:18
motivational talking
56:21
so it's amazing how
56:23
and you're committed
56:28
and you're here at this event
56:30
it's amazing where you can get in life
56:33
for giving opportunities
56:36
that you're dedicated
56:44
they are to work with
56:45
and there's so many people
56:46
just in the community
56:47
doing everyday stuff
56:49
I talked to you on the podcast
56:51
owning a Subaru has
56:53
and because of the community
56:56
brand to be a part of
56:57
amazing even the dog
56:59
they were doing this morning
57:01
you just don't see those things
57:02
you know what I mean
57:03
and I think that's amazing
57:04
the dogs this morning
57:05
were the most beautiful
57:07
they just need a home
57:08
and I think it's great
57:09
I go to the SuviFest
57:11
and the pet adoption
57:14
I think there's a couple
57:15
little cats as well
57:16
I think it's really cool
57:17
the different things
57:18
they're involved in
57:22
well thank you so much
57:24
yeah that was great
57:29
we're here at Overland
57:32
and I'm sitting here
57:33
with a cross track owner
57:34
I want you to go ahead
57:35
and introduce yourself
57:37
Ginger nice to meet you
57:40
or I guess what year
57:45
my other half and I
57:47
and what got you into
57:49
is this your first Subaru
57:53
driving back and forth
57:57
we drive from south of Dayton
58:01
and did you know anything
58:04
before you bought yours
58:07
I got treated poorly
58:08
at one of the other dealerships
58:13
and looked at a car
58:23
his second favorite color
58:24
which was a dark gray
58:28
he wanted that orange one
58:30
they couldn't get it
58:36
and I bought the orange one
58:37
and I sold his gray one
58:46
Subaru's for the first time
58:48
and you bought them brand new
58:59
I don't really do it
59:03
going back and forth
59:13
actually we had one
59:15
so we're thinking about
59:23
it has to be wilderness
59:27
the wilderness package
59:28
I bought one year too early
59:32
for the cross-trick
59:38
just more for the size
59:39
and then the capability
59:45
I have other vehicles
59:47
more for the fuel economy
59:49
and I love the way it looks
59:55
off-roading somewhere
59:59
especially like just
00:00
you know as they are
00:11
we have a family reunion
00:13
but up in East Texas
00:14
there was some county roads
00:15
that I couldn't get up
00:20
these roads with a cross-trick
00:22
the extent of what I thought
00:23
I was going to use it for
00:25
it's turned into so much more
00:27
and with the wilderness
00:32
and I just like the size
00:36
you can't get those
00:38
so what do you think
00:46
second largest exhibit
00:51
which one is number one
00:52
but I thought this was
00:54
I walked by yesterday
00:59
I'm going to want to get
01:05
can't say anything bad
01:12
so my puppy right now
01:22
get rid of both of them
01:34
maybe get one of each
01:35
well that's what we did
01:37
we're probably going to
01:38
end up doing the same
01:39
but it has to be the wilderness package
01:42
it has too much to offer
01:43
that the other ones don't
01:46
they're very nice cars
01:48
put a lot of thought
01:50
creating the wilderness package
01:51
you know you've got
01:52
like the extra height
01:54
and then other amenities
01:55
that the other ones
01:57
and just the overall
02:01
it's more the styling
02:02
I know it sounds terrible
02:08
you walk out to your car
02:09
every day and enjoy
02:13
I notice that the grill area
02:14
I'm guessing that it's because
02:20
and it's definitely
02:23
and there are people
02:24
that really like it
02:25
and there are people
02:26
that don't like it so much
02:32
that's important as well
02:33
I think it looks great
02:36
and then this is nice
02:37
owner lounge for everybody
02:40
and get out of the sun
02:44
like the silverware
02:46
yeah those are great too
02:47
everybody's really nice here
02:48
compared to the other places
02:50
I've kind of been ignored
02:51
two or three times now
02:53
well that's good to hear
02:55
think a lot of people
03:05
I ended up with the Subaru
03:06
because I got treated poorly
03:07
at another dealership
03:08
they totally ignored me
03:13
do you want to go in
03:15
and ask him about it
03:18
why do I need to do that
03:20
and I walked into the
03:26
do you know anything about
03:27
the type of car you want
03:30
what I'm looking for
03:34
and then he went there
03:41
I'm glad you had a good
03:43
and I'm glad you had a good
03:44
experience at the dealership
03:45
I'm guessing the next one
03:46
will be just as good
03:48
well thank you so much
03:53
alright I'm sitting here
03:59
whatever you want to call it
04:02
guess who I ran into
04:03
I ran into the brick
04:06
you just can't get rid of me
04:08
nobody can see you again
04:10
anywhere there's Subaru
04:17
so what do you think
04:18
of the whole Subaru
04:19
setup at overland expo
04:26
for just a short amount
04:28
and it's essentially
04:30
that they had there
04:31
but it's really cool
04:38
they've got a lot of cool
04:39
a lot of cool Subaru
04:42
and the new outback
04:47
when we started off
04:51
I hope that by the end
04:57
even better in person
05:03
an hour and 45 minutes
05:10
Subaru would be here
05:12
and it's just kind of
05:13
you know we want to
05:18
you know with Subaru's
05:35
have you gotten any ideas
05:45
that's what we're working on
05:46
and part of that is
05:51
which would be great
05:56
any outdoorsy types
05:58
that want to come to
06:06
for more overlanding
06:08
we've started doing
06:10
like special overland
06:17
but a special designated
06:45
pallet that goes with
07:03
what they're going to
07:04
yeah it's basically
07:32
what we ship around
07:37
more fun things to have
07:42
is just always good
08:00
I know it's difficult
08:03
especially if they're
08:04
like in a big parking lot
08:05
or like a motor sports
08:07
speedway or something
08:09
you just don't really
09:01
the performance oriented
09:11
that we're currently
09:31
their double-decker trailer
09:32
and all the displays
09:38
probably a lot harder
09:42
we're always trying
09:45
to improve something
09:49
we're always open to
09:50
we're always trying
09:59
and many other people
10:23
well I mean is this week
10:29
event that was in the past
10:42
it's just always fun
10:44
running into people
10:45
in different places
10:46
and getting a chance
10:58
all right what are we talking about
11:02
I'm sitting here with Alex
11:10
why don't you give us
11:11
your Instagram handle
11:26
the thinking behind that
11:29
gotten a vanity plate
11:39
shutting down vanity plates
11:45
apparently some guy
11:49
as the license plate
11:51
they took it away from him
11:53
what do you think it is
12:01
that's my first account
12:03
and then the business
12:10
briefly what snail.us
12:12
we're going to have you
12:17
what do you do with that
12:27
it's a metallic gray
12:33
we love our manuals here
12:36
when I was in college
12:39
as a lot of college kids
12:41
convince their parents
12:44
for them to get a car
12:47
so it was a budget friendly
12:59
four years going on
13:16
sort of like pressuring me into like
13:21
and do crazy stuff to it
13:23
I put a roof basket on
13:24
I did the rock blocks
13:25
I went through all that phase
13:26
and then eventually
13:30
relation race rules bumper
13:32
when they're still making it
13:35
at the time in college
13:36
only had enough money
13:37
to buy the front bumper
13:38
not the rear bumper
13:39
so I bought the front first
13:40
with the full intention
13:49
and buy the rear one
13:51
they stopped making it
13:52
they just continued entirely
13:54
months I was just sending emails
13:56
when are you gonna bring it back
13:59
yeah I just don't want to do
14:02
me like going to school
14:03
for industrial design
14:07
a design of a rear bumper
14:09
my Instagram at the time
14:11
posting a few photos
14:16
just a ton of really
14:18
it turns out a lot of people
14:19
also had the same idea
14:21
bought the front bumper
14:22
had intention of buying
14:23
the rear and never got to
14:24
and so everyone was like
14:25
you gotta make this bumper
14:32
how to bend the tube
14:37
TIG welding in school
14:45
I don't know how to do this
14:54
if they could make this for me
14:58
who was able to do it
15:03
when I got to his shop
15:07
air quotations right now
15:17
which is very different
15:23
the first prototype
15:34
which is what we use
15:35
now for the bumpers
15:38
the first prototype
15:39
the prototype bumper
15:48
cross-track over there
16:03
the length of your car
16:08
I was talking about
16:11
so what's your business
16:25
in terms of media post them
16:26
or sometimes you'll see
16:30
the authors or whatever
16:31
of the Instagram post
16:33
yeah I guess I don't do
16:54
completely separate
17:01
of eccentric designs
17:11
it was the same person
17:12
and I've had that happen
17:13
with some other accounts too
17:14
where I didn't know
17:16
the car was associated
17:34
between our personal
17:40
within Overland Expo
17:42
not the camping space
17:45
the owner allowance
17:50
quite a bit of effort
17:52
this is actually my first
17:54
from what I've heard
18:00
the most amount of effort
18:02
that Subaru has put in
18:03
Subaru's one of the lead
18:08
it's pretty impressive
18:10
Subaru's putting so much effort
18:14
overlanding in general
18:15
and this sort of lifestyle
18:20
it makes me have hope that
18:22
this is a direction
18:23
that can also go in
18:28
the little stage over here
18:29
for doing presentations
18:30
you've got the owner lounge
18:31
with Rhiann and Gels Amino
18:34
which is super cool
18:39
almost overlanding over there
18:42
and then a couple of factory vehicles
18:46
what are your thoughts
18:50
we're sitting right
19:06
which I didn't realize
19:07
it was a wilderness at first
19:09
it had like the graphics
19:10
on it and everything
19:13
one of these in person
19:14
I mean I could have taken
19:18
but I was just like
19:21
just kind of looking at it
19:22
and it wasn't until
19:23
I saw the wilderness badge
19:26
near the rear window
19:28
oh it's a wilderness
19:32
I've been wanting to
19:34
so that I can kind of
19:36
do more of an assessment
19:39
I like it personally
19:43
has always attracted me
19:46
things throughout my life
19:48
different and funky
19:50
different and funky
19:54
that I kind of like
19:56
I know a lot of people
20:00
being called an outback
20:03
like maybe they should
20:04
just release it as a new
20:06
and not call it the outback
20:07
because it looks so different
20:14
anything I look at it
20:23
different and funky
20:31
considering the rest
20:32
of the Subaru lineup
20:40
they've really fixed
20:41
the main infotainment
20:46
the last generation
20:48
like the Volvo system
20:50
so they've actually
20:53
physical buttons back
20:58
in the right direction
21:01
look at the whole lineup
21:04
to get a little bit
21:07
you know the outback
21:13
which was the small
21:19
which was an actual
21:30
and then there is also
21:32
which is also an SUV
21:33
and seeing them in person
21:34
they're quite similar
21:42
I know a lot of people
21:46
from the very beginning
21:50
when it first came out
21:54
seeing it on the road
21:56
drive it ever since it came out
22:04
is one of the best driving
22:06
I still want to drive it
22:07
I've never driven one
22:13
and that compared to
22:20
not even like the speed
22:21
I wish we could get
22:24
in our cross tricks
22:25
that'd be really cool
22:28
the tightness of it
22:29
it's just a really good gearbox
22:30
and one of the best
22:36
so how has your experience
22:37
been over at Camp Subaru?
22:39
oh it's been awesome
22:45
they've been really
22:47
they've always been
22:52
we've done a lot of
22:55
so I'm super appreciative
23:05
videos with all of us
23:10
it's been a great time
23:15
it's been pretty incredible
23:20
surprisingly have not
23:21
been able to try it out yet
23:25
will be my first go
23:29
about your experience here?
23:42
Skipping Boxer Fest
23:50
I'm not really sure
23:54
but now that I've been here
24:04
that's great to hear
24:24
definitely belongs here
24:25
especially with where
24:26
they've taken the brand
24:27
with the Wilderness
24:28
editions and everything
24:31
customers and stuff
24:38
and outdoor lifestyle
24:45
alright well thanks
24:54
alright so I'm sitting here
24:58
underscore the OBXT
25:03
actually in on the stage
25:10
your experience here so far
25:17
Subaru has laid out
25:19
all the factory cars
25:28
but this section here
25:46
they've done their homework
25:48
that you would like to see
25:50
differently done here
25:56
I just think it's been
25:58
I commend the Subaru staff
26:03
their feet on the ground
26:08
we've talked about it
26:14
what's your experience
26:16
over at Camp Subaru
26:17
so you were invited out
26:20
to camp with a bunch
26:21
of different Subaru owners
26:26
while A. they're providing us
26:30
for lunch and dinner
26:32
pretty well-known chefs
26:37
but they had an organized
26:43
a drive through the
26:49
just to have those options
26:58
normally have not met
27:00
kind of staying together
27:03
but there's so many people
27:05
it's in the Subaru section
27:11
you think you would
27:14
if I was lucky enough
27:20
game to go anywhere
27:33
to snuggle up next to
27:35
and get a little warm
27:38
as much as all of you
27:42
and I saw one of those
27:51
but it's really nice
27:57
doesn't last that long
28:02
maybe have a couple
28:11
it's been fun for me
28:12
to just kind of move around
28:13
and chat with a bunch
28:14
of different people
28:16
that I haven't met before
28:17
and see people like you
28:24
I didn't go to California
28:28
how is this compared
28:30
this one's the smallest
28:41
all the factory vehicles
28:42
and the owner vehicles
28:46
it's about the same
28:49
this one's more narrow
28:52
than the one we had
29:01
relatively the same
29:04
the amount of space
29:12
you know it's been pretty cool
29:13
yeah I would imagine
29:14
P&W would be a huge event
29:16
like just the terrain itself
29:25
so that was really cool too
29:29
set up a little bit differently
29:38
might be also because of the
29:40
except for Flagstaff
29:43
in the vendor parking
29:46
was kind of funneling in
29:47
to the same entrance
29:49
we were kind of coming in
29:51
and not through the main entrance
29:53
even whenever I went
29:55
like even when I went to
29:59
I'm messing up my own story
30:09
everyone's been different for me
30:11
and then where I came in
30:12
I assumed where we came in
30:13
was the only entrance
30:14
there was a different way in
30:15
yeah there was another entrance
30:17
up at the front past
30:20
I didn't realize that
30:24
for all of us campers
30:26
and stuff driving in
30:31
that was a little bit different
30:35
and blessed to have been
30:44
but the Subaru side of it
30:46
like I said earlier
30:48
really appreciating
30:49
what they've done for us
31:01
huge shout out to Joe
31:04
baby in his project
31:05
and really appreciate
31:06
everything that he's done
31:10
I'm missing him on this trip
31:13
and went on vacation
31:19
picking up the slack
31:27
and from all the other
31:34
Elizabeth is getting married soon
31:39
working with us this weekend
31:45
and an update on everybody
31:47
listening to the podcast
31:48
I heard a couple of the updates
31:52
mentioned the camping aspect
31:54
I kind of reached out
31:56
hey is there a chance to go
31:58
like I was lucky enough
32:17
and your experience
32:22
another green outback
32:25
yes we just met last night
32:27
so that was really cool
32:30
experience been like
32:32
do you think they have
32:40
and what you've seen here
32:41
I think it's interesting
32:43
like the newer models
32:48
controls and features
33:00
and kind of back to that
33:02
when I was sitting in there
33:04
all the push button
33:07
stuff so that was really cool
33:09
and then yeah overall
33:11
it's nice to just see
33:12
be able to see them
33:13
because in pictures and stuff
33:15
they look a lot different
33:19
as far as the overall
33:21
what do you think about it all
33:23
I think it's pretty welcoming
33:25
I feel like some of the booze
33:26
I know not everyone
33:28
but some of the booze
33:30
I feel like you can walk in
33:31
and like look at things
33:35
job like kind of a whole
33:38
especially the owner
33:40
owner lounge has been really nice
33:41
because it gives people
33:43
get out of the shade
33:48
so as far as camping
33:50
what has your experience
33:55
exactly like this before
33:56
I was a little nervous
33:58
a very big people person
34:00
but I got to park near
34:01
the Adventure One guys
34:02
who I have come to know
34:06
I got to park together
34:08
it's been a positive experience
34:10
and everybody loves your dog
34:12
Tobin definitely helps
34:13
he's good for the introductions
34:16
and he's had fun too
34:24
and like you said introverted
34:25
which a lot of people
34:26
are including myself
34:27
even though I do the podcast
34:30
I'm not one to just like
34:32
and be like hey how are you doing
34:34
I'm trying to get better at that
34:35
because of the podcast
34:36
and being at events like this
34:40
being around other people
34:43
did you feel more comfortable
34:44
because everybody's there
34:45
for the same reason
34:52
have a lot of similar
34:58
it's a big community
35:03
who I haven't met before
35:06
I've known online so
35:07
yeah and I think that's one of
35:09
is when you get a chance
35:10
to meet people in person
35:12
and then meet new people
35:13
too that maybe you didn't
35:18
and there's people here
35:24
because they're from
35:27
so and what year is your outback
35:33
because it's another green outback
35:36
well thank you so much
35:40
it was nice to come out here
35:51
I'm sitting here with Kyle
35:56
what's your Instagram handle
35:57
Instagram handle is
35:59
the create outdoors
36:02
and if you don't know
36:03
he's been on the podcast
36:07
because I don't remember all of
36:12
what do you think about
36:15
if we can call it that
36:18
the way it's laid out
36:23
a really great start
36:24
I like the symmetrical
36:31
with the hangout spot
36:34
you know a car on each side
36:36
like the stage here
36:38
on the outside of that
36:43
it was definitely a good start
36:44
I mean a pretty clean
36:52
and obviously it depends
37:03
everything in the booth
37:05
on the way to the car
37:09
probably going to come
37:10
to see the cars first
37:11
and then everything else
37:14
doing that would be
37:15
maybe a good idea to do
37:22
I think with this space
37:23
we were just a little
37:41
quite a bit more space
37:44
there was an opportunity
37:46
a little bit better
37:49
kind of from the front
37:51
because there were like
37:56
umbrellas for shade
37:58
what we're missing in this one
38:01
it does feel more constrained
38:04
than a lot of the other
38:09
they did a good job
38:13
they utilized this space
38:16
and so what has your
38:17
experience been like
38:18
over at Camp Subaru
38:24
confusion in the beginning
38:25
I don't think it's anyone's
38:30
you know with Adventure 1
38:32
you know for so many years
38:35
we want to set things up
38:38
when we're all parking
38:39
everyone's just going to
38:40
park next to each other
38:41
like a regular parking lot
38:45
we can do different
38:50
there wasn't really like
38:52
there weren't any questions of
38:53
oh what kind of camping gear
39:00
some people have rooftop tents
39:03
other people are sleeping
39:04
in their cars like I am
39:06
you have a better idea
39:08
might want to utilize
39:13
that's a good point
39:18
that would be a good question
39:20
what is your particular
39:23
like how much space do you need
39:25
do you have an awning
39:26
you're going to put out
39:27
are you going to put out
39:29
or you have a rooftop tent
39:35
lay out their spaces
39:38
and if you're coming
39:41
definitely probably want to
39:43
and maybe you have an idea
39:46
some good things to think about
39:48
because when we go camping
39:50
we're always figuring out
39:52
one person could park here
39:53
someone could park here
39:54
like we're having that idea
39:56
what's going to be the best
39:59
they can also get out
40:00
if they need to get out
40:04
anything else you want to add
40:05
about your experience here
40:06
I mean this is my first
40:10
I still haven't even
40:13
so much going on here
40:15
I kind of like it more
40:16
than Wicked Big Meat
40:26
we're all in the outdoors
40:27
I could go to every
40:31
that could apply to me
40:48
asked Brick about that
40:50
because I was talking to him
40:51
and talking about some of
40:53
and stuff that they're
40:58
that they're at least
41:00
and they want to be
41:01
able to do more too
41:04
they have to coordinate
41:09
the people coming to
41:11
and what kind of vendors
41:20
the list of vendors
41:21
that we would think
41:29
some of those brands
41:32
we're trying to get
41:43
I think the reason why
41:44
you're getting more
41:47
overlanding vehicles
41:49
everyone with a performance
41:53
is probably an enthusiast
42:07
isn't in Subaru culture
42:08
might not have any idea
42:11
or anything like that
42:14
the other point that he brought up to
42:16
I didn't even really think about it
42:19
for the performance
42:24
places that are like
42:27
you have people with really low cars
42:32
they would have issues
42:43
where you've got somebody
42:48
the show cars can go on
42:59
it was nice chatting with you
43:00
nice chatting with you again
43:05
let the interrogation begin
43:06
is that still recording
43:10
really an expo east
43:13
got a nice surprise
43:14
that you stopped by
43:17
and introduce yourself in person
43:20
I don't always recognize somebody
43:22
I'm sitting here with Isaiah
43:25
yeah it's finally nice to
43:26
put a name to a face
43:30
but yeah it's good to be here
43:34
so far it's been pretty good
43:36
and your Instagram handle
43:38
yep still court low
43:40
not that it matters
43:41
it comes up either way
43:44
and another guest that I had
43:48
or what are your thoughts on
43:50
like their booth space
43:55
it's very well set up
43:56
with the owner experience
43:57
kind of in the middle
44:01
as well as the owner cars
44:03
kind of surrounding it
44:05
I guess dealer provided
44:06
I guess you could call it
44:09
behind the owner cars
44:10
I think it gives a good
44:13
that Subaru does care
44:16
in addition to promoting
44:22
is definitely a big hit
44:24
people an opportunity
44:26
get out of the shade
44:29
and a lot of the feedback
44:30
that I've heard from
44:32
how welcoming it is
44:35
and like you said shows
44:39
it's really good to have
44:42
and then also gets people
44:43
an opportunity to see
44:46
what's possible with it
44:47
that people may not
44:48
have even known about
44:52
did you get here today
44:53
or did you camp last night
44:54
I came in yesterday
44:56
so I camped last night
44:57
and I'll be camping again
44:59
okay so what has your
45:00
experience been like
45:01
over at Camp Subaru
45:02
camping has been great
45:03
obviously can't control it
45:04
it is a little cold
45:08
that's what sleeping bags
45:11
the food has been excellent
45:14
has been absolutely outstanding
45:16
and it's probably the most
45:18
I've probably had in my life
45:21
how to make it at home
45:22
but probably won't go
45:24
yeah it was good stuff
45:27
you know people over there
45:29
have you had a chance
45:31
like a lot of different people
45:33
there's a lot of people
45:34
here that you already know
45:36
that you hadn't met before
45:38
it was cool to finally meet
45:42
I've been following his page
45:43
on instagram with the
45:44
cross track and the new
45:46
and it was cool to finally
45:50
it's been good to see a
45:51
lot of people again
45:52
um that I've gone on trips
45:57
actually get to talk to
45:58
for more than a couple
45:59
minutes on the trail
46:00
so it's been really nice
46:02
yeah it gives people
46:05
and there's so many different
46:08
you know like stuff
46:09
that's going on here
46:12
so you get an opportunity
46:13
to be around people
46:14
and chat with them there
46:16
you've got dinner time
46:18
they're doing karaoke later
46:22
they got yoga in the
46:25
there's just so many
46:26
different opportunities
46:29
spend time with people
46:34
and I think that's really great
46:35
yeah it's certainly nice
46:37
so thank you so much
46:40
yeah and maybe we'll
46:41
see you at karaoke later
46:43
because I only hold the mic
46:46
I won't be singing either
46:48
to see what everybody
46:53
you want to go next?
47:04
here at Overland Expo East
47:07
talking about lifts
47:08
and stuff in the background
47:09
so for everybody listening
47:10
why don't you go ahead
47:11
and introduce yourself
47:12
and give your Instagram handle
47:15
my Instagram handle
47:16
is Blue Root Ventures
47:17
it's blu.roo.adventures
47:21
so what is your thoughts
47:23
on the way that Subaru
47:29
and visit their booth space
47:31
I've quite enjoyed it
47:33
the open happy hour
47:34
they had last night
47:38
definitely enjoy that
47:40
some owner vehicles here
47:42
it's nice to see that
47:46
hey this is what you can do
47:52
get a little adventurous
47:53
get your hands dirty a little
47:55
don't have to keep the car
47:57
as we sell it to you
47:58
have a little bit of fun with it
48:01
I think that's good
48:02
that Subaru does that
48:05
they're not afraid to showcase
48:07
that people are adding
48:09
aftermarket products to their car
48:14
you know they're like
48:15
really showing people
48:17
really like to have fun
48:19
and accessorize them
48:21
and I think that's amazing
48:22
that people get to see that
48:24
I'm sure a lot of people
48:25
that probably come through
48:27
you know especially being
48:28
over the course of three days
48:29
you get a lot of people coming through
48:31
I didn't know you could do that
48:33
so it's really cool
48:34
to see them doing that with these
48:35
yeah and we've had the same thing
48:36
with people walking through the camp
48:38
and seeing some of the cars too
48:39
and wow I had no idea
48:40
you could do that with a Subaru
48:47
because you start connecting with people
48:48
within the community
48:49
start asking questions
48:50
and start getting answers
48:52
oh these people are like
48:56
and that's something we love to do
48:57
we want to see more people
48:59
and get adventurous with the vehicles
49:01
take them off the B and path
49:03
yeah so as far as like this space here
49:05
they were sitting in
49:06
is there anything about it
49:08
that you would think
49:09
that they could do differently
49:11
honestly the one thing
49:12
I'd like to see if they
49:14
whether it's next year
49:16
is the owner's lounge
49:20
I've thought of that too
49:22
I mean it is definitely
49:25
it provides seating
49:28
which is really nice
49:29
with these days being so hot
49:31
and then of course snacks
49:35
at one of the other events
49:38
but then I think they had like
49:40
so they had a little more seating
49:42
right now seating is a little lacking
49:45
four or five people can sit down
49:47
it'd be nice to be able to sit down
49:48
and have conversations
49:49
with a larger group of people
49:51
like we've been doing at camp
49:55
I know somebody talked about
49:56
the lack of shade on the stage
49:58
because they do have
50:04
depending on the part of the day
50:05
it doesn't really provide
50:10
this is their first go at it
50:13
they're going to take
50:14
a lot of this information
50:18
what they can do differently
50:19
what they can do better
50:22
put a positive note
50:24
my favorite thing was
50:27
optional accessories
50:28
and how much they're
50:30
judging interest in that
50:31
they want to see if people
50:32
like this accessory
50:35
testing with the waters
50:36
with stuff they haven't done before
50:38
so what was one of the
50:39
like your favorite accessories
50:42
I really like the idea
50:49
some people really like
50:50
to have something more
50:54
to have your super dealer
50:59
a little bit more personality
51:03
I didn't notice it until
51:04
like later in today
51:07
wilderness that they have
51:09
did you see the decal
51:13
got a mountain range on it
51:14
it's very intricate
51:15
and it's very well done
51:16
yeah I like that a lot
51:18
I said I didn't notice it
51:21
and I think I didn't even
51:22
notice until they turned it
51:24
they wanted to show
51:25
the back of the vehicle
51:26
as people were walking
51:28
it was facing forward
51:31
they turned it around
51:33
I was looking at it
51:35
well I didn't even notice
51:37
but they did a really good
51:46
they chose to display
51:48
I think they really
51:57
because we have that
51:59
for to set up our tables
52:02
and get out of the sun
52:19
and Milton crawling
52:22
couples who are here
52:27
of their cross track
52:47
because not everybody
52:51
he wants to do more
52:56
and a lot of people
52:58
because it helps them
52:59
personalize their car
53:01
yeah I'm not really
53:02
into putting decals
53:04
but he does want to
53:13
and some people are
53:20
there's nothing stopping you
53:21
from rolling right out
53:22
and just going camping
53:28
really seems to stand
53:29
behind their performance
53:41
like I was looking at
53:44
everything you have on it
53:50
whatever model it is
53:54
feel kind of intimidated
53:59
just because they don't
54:22
back when Mountain Real
54:26
some of the guys from
54:28
I went down to them
54:29
with the Pine Barons
54:39
and the all seasons
54:45
through the Pine Barons
54:48
I want to play around
54:49
with this little bit more
54:52
it's definitely fun
54:58
there's so many people
55:00
something really cool
55:04
and then get really
55:08
thoroughly impressed
55:12
and definitely having
55:16
it should be skid plates
55:21
on what you're going to do
55:24
if you're going to be off-roading
55:25
if you want to go off-road
55:27
find some campsites
55:29
in the middle of nowhere
55:34
because you may not
55:41
what you're going to
55:46
you just hit something
55:53
lodged itself right
55:55
especially some newer
56:01
hits the drain plug
56:04
you don't have a way
56:09
you're in the middle
56:21
I guess kind of scared
56:48
the edges are quite
56:52
starts to break out
57:00
you may not damage it
57:13
because I have a manual
57:16
a transmission skid plate
57:18
when I had primitive on
57:19
they gave me a full set
57:23
a transmission skid plate
57:26
when I was under there
57:29
like how vulnerable
57:32
the transmission pan is
57:34
it's just right there
57:36
looked under one before
57:42
that would be very helpful
57:43
it sits surprisingly low
57:50
transmission skid plate
58:04
and then immediately
58:08
and a rear diff skid plan
58:09
I'm always learning
58:11
and I'm recording with people
58:14
about their experiences
58:15
so it's very good points
58:18
well thank you so much
58:19
for hopping on the mic
58:26
with the interrogations
58:33
with Andrew Compton
58:38
what's your Instagram handle
58:44
I knew it had your name in it
58:46
I just couldn't remember exactly
58:52
what has your experience been
58:57
what do you think about
59:00
that Subaru has set up
59:05
this is my first time
59:09
I said a couple of times
59:10
throughout the weekend
59:11
this set a high bar
59:18
I may or may not be biased
59:19
but I think they had one of
59:20
if not the best displays
59:28
they've got the community spaces
59:29
they had snacks for owners
59:31
they had a lot of representatives
59:37
knocked out of the park
59:41
being that you've been able
59:42
to come through the space
59:44
a good part of the day
59:46
is there anything that you see
59:48
that you would like to see
59:51
added for next year
59:56
how hot it was this weekend
00:00
it's kind of hard to
00:04
I'd have to sit on that
00:06
but now this was a stellar
00:11
this sets the bar high
00:14
that's good to hear
00:15
so what has your experience
00:16
been like over at Camp Subaru
00:18
it's been a fun time
00:21
met a lot of people
00:22
who I'd followed on Instagram
00:25
to meet them in person
00:27
names and faces to vehicles
00:36
Rhian and Gelsomino
00:37
come over for dinner
00:42
everyone's just kind of
00:43
sharing their stories
00:44
sharing experiences
00:45
everyone's super nice
00:49
experience has been
00:52
that's good to hear
00:56
and then you've got
01:03
had about your experience here
01:06
I hope to come back
01:11
overlay that's so possibly
01:14
yeah hope to do it again
01:15
yeah it was great to see you again
01:17
48 hours of tri-state
01:21
when you get a chance
01:22
to either see somebody again
01:25
anyway it's funny you mention that
01:27
I've had this thought
01:28
a couple times over the past couple weeks
01:32
while the Subaru owners
01:41
and actually met them in person
01:42
Subaru likes to say
01:43
they're more than just
01:47
and this experience
02:01
that they put together
02:03
Subaru owners together
02:10
see what this experience is about
02:11
and I think it's great too
02:24
to this kind of experience
02:27
what Subaru is all about
02:29
other Subaru owners
02:32
for the opportunity
02:36
well thank you so much
02:37
for hopping on the mic
02:45
put it all up in your
02:58
why don't you go ahead
03:05
Subaru on Instagram
03:17
what are your thoughts
03:30
capable skid plates
03:32
the previous generation
03:35
I like the layout of it
03:45
about building Subaru
03:51
yeah it was pretty cool
03:55
like about the space
03:58
I kind of wish there was
04:07
the space until it's there
04:08
and the weather you're going to have
04:12
and so having some extra cover
04:13
would have been nice
04:24
and I think that had to do
04:26
yeah the space here
04:27
definitely seems a little limited
04:30
isn't anything Subaru can really do
04:35
so what has your experience been
04:36
like over at Camp Subaru
04:42
I've had an absolute blast
04:45
I'm going to be a little sad
04:52
I've had an absolute
04:57
have never met in person
05:00
yeah and just hanging out
05:01
with the people I do know
05:05
it's been a great time
05:10
that are over there
05:12
because I know that you've
05:13
followed some people
05:14
so coming to who they were
05:16
you're here with people
05:17
that you already know
05:19
but did you get a chance
05:23
you know weren't following
05:36
being able to talk to them
05:57
connected with through
06:00
so many other people
06:04
just be a daily driver
06:06
want to have anything
06:07
to do with other people
06:10
doing some of the stuff
06:22
people that may want to be
06:26
I think it'd be really cool
06:28
more of those people
06:37
you don't want to sound
06:39
but I mean it seems like
06:40
that's the best way
06:42
Instagram accounts for our
06:51
before I even bought my
06:53
I knew I was going to buy it
07:03
do that silly thing
07:04
and start an Instagram page
07:06
and I remember thinking
07:08
what are people going to think
07:10
having an Instagram page
07:12
I had the exact same thought
07:15
how many months after
07:18
posting consistently
07:20
friends or my family
07:22
I actually have this account
07:25
so we're definitely
07:26
a little bit different
07:29
it's so nice to meet
07:30
people that are different
07:43
modifying their car
07:50
the weekend warrior
07:53
just take their Subaru
07:58
or to get to a campsite
08:02
slightly different side
08:06
overlanding Subaru community
08:07
and the modifications too
08:12
because I live in the
08:14
and we don't really
08:16
opportunities to go
08:21
that are not too far from us
08:22
we have state parks
08:23
and stuff that people
08:26
that might have like
08:33
or something like that
08:38
and wheels and tires
08:39
and all this other stuff
08:42
lifestyle accessories
08:48
I don't have a lift
08:49
because I don't need one
08:52
yeah I think for most people
08:53
like it's not really
08:57
maybe it's something that
08:58
they haven't even thought
09:00
which if they're not even
09:14
yep it's been great
09:16
thank you for having me
09:17
yeah you're welcome
09:19
they're getting ready
09:22
are you going to join in
09:23
I'm not going to sing
09:28
I can talk on the mic
09:38
something different
09:46
because she was planning
09:47
she had been planning
09:48
on coming down here
09:53
or something like that
10:06
stay here with her dog
10:09
make sure everybody
10:16
that I'm recording this
10:21
I don't have my whole setup
10:28
to record this audio right now
10:30
just to see how it's going
10:32
I realized I got to the end of
10:35
of Overland Expo on Saturday
10:39
to transition into day three
10:42
in the last conversation
10:46
I don't have a way to record it
10:51
so I'm giving it a try
10:54
I don't know how this is going to sound
10:55
until I play it back
10:57
I'm going to get into
10:58
we're going to get into
11:01
of Overland Expo here
11:04
alright we're sitting here
11:05
at Overland Expo East
11:08
sitting here with Leo man
11:11
thanks for having me
11:13
why don't you let everybody know
11:14
what your Instagram handle is
11:17
my Instagram handle
11:20
that's wilder as in wilderness
11:22
not wilder like most people say it
11:24
yeah that's how I was saying
11:26
so glad you said that
11:27
so it's W I L D E R underscore
11:29
and then feels with the Z
11:42
who's one of the corporate
11:44
I met him in California
11:51
that was kind of like a
11:54
pre-production for the Overland Ex
11:58
at one of his shops
11:59
and I was just there
12:00
you know doing my own thing
12:04
and then from there
12:06
he saw how enthusiastic
12:08
I was about towards Subaru
12:09
and how involved I've been
12:13
it'd be cool if you came
12:18
asking to be featured
12:20
on the loyalty program booth
12:25
I was like what I gotta do
12:26
to get my car in one of these booths
12:28
I was originally supposed to participate
12:31
but then I recently moved
12:32
so I wasn't able to do that
12:34
Virginia was closer
12:36
let's pull the trigger on Virginia
12:39
since it's the last
12:46
you know the area that Subaru has set up here
12:48
is like their booth space
12:50
what do you think of the way it's all laid out
12:52
and what they've got going on here
12:56
what Subaru has done
12:58
in getting into the Overland Space
13:04
the California was really nice
13:11
this one in Virginia
13:13
is probably the least elaborate one
13:16
because of the spacing
13:19
I do like what they've done
13:24
it wasn't just a small little
13:27
it's a big presence
13:30
I'm happy to be a part of it
13:33
yeah it's been a good experience
13:35
you know the layout is basically the same
13:37
as you know throughout
13:39
all of the expos but
13:41
some of them have allowed for us
13:43
to spread out a little bit more
13:45
but I think this one might be the most constrained
13:49
but it's still really spread out
13:51
and I feel like you said
13:53
you know it's not as constrained as a lot of the other
13:55
I don't want to just give my opinion
13:57
on this one in particular
13:59
I'm kind of putting all my experiences together
14:01
overall it's been a great experience
14:03
being able to do the
14:12
and then also being able to be an exhibitor
14:16
I'm able to see both sides
14:18
I'm able to see what it's like
14:22
and doing the customer side of things
14:24
and then also being as an exhibitor
14:26
seeing the behind the scenes
14:28
how much work goes behind it
14:31
because I'm camping in the booth
14:33
so I'm up at 6.30 in the morning
14:38
the first people that show up
14:40
the cleaning crew that comes and wipes down the cars
14:42
the ladies that come and they start sweeping the floors
14:47
setting up the chairs
14:49
they start setting up the chairs
14:51
and I'm like man a lot goes into this
14:53
you know a lot goes into this
14:55
and I'm talking to the people because I'm the only one here
14:57
and I'm getting to know everyone
15:02
it's so fun to just
15:05
the behind the scenes
15:07
you've been more of a part of
15:09
the whole process I think
15:11
than a lot of other people would do
15:13
now that I'm talking about it with you
15:15
I'm like the first one
15:17
I'm already here because I'm sleeping on the ground
15:19
and I'm here since 6.30
15:21
the sun's not even out yet
15:23
and Troy rolls up with his car
15:25
and then he starts taking pictures
15:27
before the sun comes out
15:29
and it's like I get to see it all
15:33
so is there any like looking at the space
15:35
and like you've been to other ones
15:37
throughout the year but
15:39
what do you think like is there something
15:41
that you would like to see done differently
15:43
or maybe a little bit better than
15:45
what you've seen that they did here
15:47
I think what they're doing
15:59
people come up they show their
16:01
key fobs and they get some snacks
16:03
and waters a little bit of shade
16:05
I do think all that's really cool
16:07
how they have the outdoorsy
16:09
decorations with REI collaborations
16:11
they have Thule out here demonstrating
16:13
the products, the stage
16:15
how they have shows throughout the day
16:17
different people come up like Rhiannon
16:25
I feel like they really hit it on the nail
16:27
and then going above
16:31
inviting 30 plus people
16:33
and renting an entirely
16:35
separate camping area
16:37
and letting them enjoy it
16:39
wine and dyeing them with the gourmet breakfast
16:41
and dinners and then
16:43
the karaoke at night
16:45
there's some things that I would recommend doing over there
16:49
I think it's perfect the way it is
16:51
what would you recommend doing over there
16:53
a little bit more involvement with the community
16:57
maybe doing some bonfires
16:59
like it was cool that there was
17:01
karaoke last night but that was the first time
17:05
but it would be cool if there was a movie night
17:07
maybe bring out a projector
17:09
play a Disney movie or something
17:11
get the community to get together
17:15
waking up and seeing the circle
17:17
and everyone's having breakfast together
17:21
it's a good point because that's the first time I've seen that
17:23
at any of the events that I've been to
17:25
because it's kind of like
17:27
you go back to the campsite
17:29
and then it's kind of like you're just on your own
17:31
I usually see someone
17:35
and then I may not bump into them again for the rest of the weekend
17:37
it's cool when you see them
17:39
on the meet and greet on the pre-meat
17:43
and then you wake up the next day in the morning
17:45
and then you're sitting next to them eating breakfast
17:47
on the next day and then at night time
17:49
and it's like you keep seeing the same people over and over
17:51
and over until they become your friends
17:53
by the time the event's over
17:55
I don't remember their names unfortunately
17:59
two girls that were walking back
18:01
to their cars because they were
18:03
getting ready to leave
18:05
and I said y'all didn't know each other before
18:09
and they're like no and I said this is great
18:11
because this is what it's all about
18:13
is bringing people, Subaru owners
18:15
to this event and meeting other Subaru owners
18:19
ever since like I think maybe
18:23
or maybe even Saturday or Friday evening
18:25
those two girls have been together
18:27
the whole time like every time I see
18:29
one of them the other ones with them
18:31
and so and I know over at
18:35
there were some women that were camping
18:37
they were meeting each other for the first time
18:39
and they talked about putting together
18:41
like women's trail runs
18:43
group and all this kind of stuff
18:45
these are people they never would have met before
18:47
and they met each other because Subaru
18:49
decided to bring these people together
18:53
a presence at this event
18:57
and I think it's been great
19:01
for me I'm new to the whole
19:05
and outdoor scene as well
19:07
I'm trying to be more explorative
19:09
your car does not look like you're new to it though
19:15
scene I had a BMW M3
19:17
prior to this and I would mod it out
19:19
and I would do car shows
19:21
but it was all about like the street
19:25
I needed to get more
19:29
for the family but I didn't want to lose
19:33
you know the ability
19:35
to play with it mod it out
19:37
have fun go to car shows and people look at it
19:39
hey your car is unique
19:41
like what you've done to it is pretty crazy
19:45
I wasn't really sure about
19:47
a Subaru my wife brought it up
19:49
because of its reliability, the safety
19:51
the resale value I'm like yeah that's cool
19:57
it's like a grandma car
19:59
do I really want that
20:01
wagon car I used to feel that way
20:03
a long time ago too yeah but then
20:05
they have a wilderness
20:07
what you want you know it's got a turbo charger
20:09
it's got the lift it
20:11
the lift and it's got
20:13
everything you want and I was like alright
20:15
I went to go test drive it
20:17
the guy at the dealer was super nice
20:21
it did check off all the boxes so I ended up
20:23
placing an order I picked it up
20:25
and then little by little I've just been
20:27
doing what I've known to do with cars
20:29
is swap out the wheels, the tires
20:31
start putting accessories, researching
20:33
so modding was already on the radar
20:35
I was going to do something with it
20:37
I just didn't know to what extent
20:39
I wanted it to be a daily driver
20:41
I didn't think it was going to become
20:43
this crazy overland
20:49
of that stuff and still have it
20:51
as a daily driver that's great
20:53
I do drive it daily it's the only vehicle
20:57
it's been fun the experience
20:59
has been fun I go online I research
21:01
I look at other people's builds
21:03
the crazy part is that the people that I researched
21:07
up and got my inspiration from
21:09
I'm starting to run into those people
21:11
at these shows and then they're like
21:13
oh man your car is my inspiration
21:15
I was like no way because your car inspired me
21:17
it's pretty cool and it's cool that
21:19
I'm running into these people and seeing them in person
21:21
and it just comes full circle
21:23
so what has your experience been like
21:25
here having your car in the booth
21:27
and having people come up to you and
21:29
ask questions and stuff like that
21:31
a lot of people want to know
21:33
how did I do certain things
21:35
like how did you mount to the light bar
21:39
you know they have questions about
21:43
and how I was able to fit
21:45
a six piston big brake caliper
21:47
you know they want to know
21:49
how do you like your
21:51
comic awning or how did you get those mounts
21:53
for your max tracks
21:55
do you think the wee boost is worth it
21:57
does it do what it says it does
21:59
and it's basically just answering questions
22:03
which I don't mind at all
22:05
because if it's going to help them
22:07
decide whether they should buy it
22:09
or not I'm happy to be able to give them
22:11
my honest opinion and say you know what
22:13
this is garbage don't buy it
22:15
don't spend your money on it
22:17
but every item I put in my car
22:19
has been thoughtfully
22:21
processed in my mind
22:23
with intention and I've done a ton of
22:25
research and if I don't like a product
22:27
I'm not gonna put out my car
22:29
or I will return it and take it off
22:31
but everything that's on my car right now
22:33
I'm very happy with
22:35
and a lot of research and thought has gone
22:37
into it with intention
22:39
so when someone asks me a question
22:41
I can probably say this thing is definitely
22:43
worth it some things are a little pricey
22:45
maybe not your priority list
22:47
but if you ever have
22:49
a little extra cash and you want to spoil yourself
22:51
sure go and get this
22:53
but it's not a priority you don't need to have
22:55
a big brick hit you don't need to have
22:59
swing in the back it's for convenience
23:03
but it does make your car look cool
23:05
I'm all about the cool factor
23:07
so did you have anybody ask you about
23:09
like the your car itself
23:11
because you've mentioned all the accessories
23:13
that people are asking about but have you had people
23:15
like you know what has your experience been like driving
23:19
I have but I feel like
23:21
the people that have
23:23
approached me already have
23:31
they know that Subaru is reliable
23:33
they know it's very safe
23:35
they know they have good resale value
23:37
so it's going to be a good investment
23:39
and now at this point
23:41
that is no longer in their minds
23:43
now they're just thinking of what can I do with it
23:45
I haven't been approached by someone
23:47
that doesn't have a Subaru yet
23:49
they usually already have
23:51
the Subaru and they just want to know about
23:53
the accessories that goes on them
23:55
every once in a while I get asked
23:59
how do you like the turbocharger
24:01
is the wilderness worth it
24:03
versus the one that doesn't have the turbocharger
24:07
they ask if it's a smooth ride
24:09
how's the gas mileage
24:11
are the seats comfortable
24:13
I do get those kind of questions
24:17
good anything else you want to add
24:19
about your experience here
24:21
overall it's been great
24:23
getting to know the cast
24:31
marketing a Subaru has been kind of cool
24:33
being able to meet people
24:37
like Kerry, like Milton
24:39
all of the community
24:41
people that come out here with their crazy
24:43
built-in foresters and chopped up
24:45
cross tracks with cool bumpers
24:47
even like small little mom
24:51
like Alex from Snailworks
24:53
I just met him today
24:55
and it was cool to see his
24:57
cross track in real life
24:59
because I've been staring at that
25:01
thing on Instagram and that's a really
25:03
sexy cross track and I finally get to meet him
25:05
and stuff like that's really cool
25:07
overall it's been a great
25:09
experience I think that
25:11
being able to camp at the booth
25:13
brought a different element
25:15
right because I knew that by 7am
25:17
this place was going to be packed
25:19
with people working different
25:21
angles so I was like I gotta be the first one
25:23
up and ready so that
25:25
not only I can get my
25:27
my glamour shots in the morning
25:29
when the sun's not over
25:31
exposing all your shots but
25:33
you also get to see how everything
25:35
works and you get to know
25:39
it's been a very awesome
25:41
experience you get to try some stellar
25:45
they don't put away the snacks
25:49
help myself to some munchies
25:51
I'll be like in my car watching
25:53
some YouTube and I'll be like
25:57
I'm going to go over to the suru
25:59
snack section and grab some of those cool pretzels
26:03
so cool man thank you for hopping on the
26:05
mic and having a little chat
26:09
looking forward to having my
26:11
own episode yeah you will
26:13
alright man thank you
26:15
man thank you for having me and I'll see you around
26:33
hello everybody thank you
26:35
so much for tuning in to this
26:43
in the longest episode of the
26:45
Subin U podcast but it was
26:47
the last event and I had a lot of great
26:53
that it was this long
26:55
but I hope you all enjoyed it
26:57
and again thank you so much
27:01
thank you so much Joe, Sean, G7
27:05
participated in the event
27:07
thank you so much for including the Subin U
27:09
podcast as part of the Overland
27:13
and I hope that I can make it out to
27:15
all of the events next year
27:17
if Subaru does end up going
27:19
to all of the events again
27:21
I think that would be a lot of fun
27:23
and I'm looking forward to seeing
27:25
what they may change up and do a little bit differently
27:27
next year but one of the things
27:29
that I would like to see and then I've talked
27:31
to them about already is having more of a
27:33
presence more of a visual
27:35
presence for the Subin U
27:37
podcast so that's something
27:39
that I definitely want to work on
27:41
and we might be doing things differently
27:43
with the podcast next year too
27:45
we've already thrown out some ideas
27:47
that we can make it more of
27:49
just more of a visual presence
27:51
and you'll just have to
27:53
wait and see but anyway
27:55
thank you again so much
27:59
able to help support the podcast
28:01
you can join Patreon
28:05
my efforts and what I'm doing here
28:07
and it would be greatly greatly appreciated
28:11
with everything that's been going on
28:15
no longer having a job
28:17
so I would greatly appreciate it
28:19
and thank you all for
28:21
the ones that have helped
28:23
it really means a lot and
28:25
I'm extremely grateful this community
28:27
is absolutely amazing and I'm
28:29
blessed to be a part of it so
28:31
