Hey everybody, this is your favorite podcaster coming at you with a bonus episode from the
Rebell rally talking to the two Subaru factory teams.
I had them on, thankfully, through the graces of the Rebell rally and that team allowing
them to take some time to record with me and I'm very, very grateful for that and glad that
I was able to do this.
I think this is either the third or the fourth year in a row that I've been able to talk
to the teams during the Rebell.
So it's really, really cool that they allowed them to do this and that we were able to
collaborate and pull together this time to hear from the teams that are out there
crushing it on the Rebell rally.
They don't know what's going on.
They don't see what the results are.
They don't see what's happening.
They don't really know what the standings are.
So they said not to say anything, so I didn't.
The only thing that I confirmed for them that it was that today is Tuesday, the day that
we recorded.
And of course, this is coming out on Wednesday, Wednesday the 15th.
And so I have to, she won't even hear this until after she gets back, but Kathleen
Autrek, it's Yagi.
Today is her birthday, Wednesday, October 15th.
So please go flood her account with birthday wishes so that when she gets her phone back,
she will see all the birthday wishes coming in.
Unfortunately, Kathleen wasn't there, so I wasn't able to hear from her and her team,
but I did talk to team 200 who were in the Subaru Forester Hybrid with Carrie as
a driver and Andrea as a navigator and then team 210 who were in the Desert Disco Subaru
Cross Trek Wilderness with Emmy as the driver and Kendra as the navigator.
So we didn't have too much time to talk because they needed to get things wrapped up and
start getting ready for bed.
And of course, you know, they're all tired.
They're out there all day long driving in the rebel and navigating these different terrains
and just putting in a lot of work, putting in a lot of hours.
And I'm sure probably not getting a great amount of sleep, maybe not even sleeping
that well, but they're out there crushing it, not just them, but all the women that
are participating in the rebel rally.
And what's really cool too is this is the 10th anniversary of the rebel rally.
So it's a big, big event for them.
And they're just out there doing great things for women in motorsports.
So again, I feel really blessed that I was able to have the opportunity to talk to the
two factory teams from Subaru and get them on here for a little bonus episode.
So doing it remote and we did it over the phone.
So the quality isn't the best, but you are able to hear most of what they were saying.
So just doing the best that we could with what we had, I had to do it.
I tried to connect through Zoom, but for some reason my Zoom was not connecting, which is
very frustrating, but we were able to do a phone call.
Thankfully, my device is able to take a phone call and route it through to GarageBand
and get it recorded.
So little technical difficulties to start off with, but we did make it happen and I was
able to get them on.
So we kind of just got right into it because they were limited on time, but here is a conversation
with Team 200 and Team 210, both of the Subaru factory teams.
So I hope you enjoy this.

How's it going with everybody?
Well, I guess, I don't know.
Shall we start with Team Mountain Subi since they've been on here before and then we'll
go through the rest of the team or teams?

Hi, Raf.

How are you, Andrea?
How are y'all doing?
We're doing good.
Oh, that's good.
I think it's good.
Good.
Well, it was day five and it poured here today, but overall, I think things are going pretty
good.
That's good.
So how did y'all manage with all the rain?
It was tough.
This is the first time in Rebell history, let me hold it.
First time in Rebell history that they've had rain during this competition day and
I have a feeling of wreak havoc on a lot of things.
This was going to be a tough day as it was and the rain really threw a wrench in our travel
times and how we drove the car and how we were able to use geographic features that were
now hidden by clouds.
Yeah.
We had to figure out if there was creek that we were driving on roads that became
creek.
There was so much water.
Yeah.
Well, I mean, it's the 10th anniversary, you know, it's got to be exciting.
Right?
Yeah, no kidding.
So how is the forest doing?
The forest, the forest is doing great.
The hybrid has been super fuel efficient, very comfortable, it's got plenty of that low
end torque, so I don't really need to worry too much about, you know, getting through
obstacles.
It's been a lot of fun.
Yeah, it's doing great.
That's good.
That's awesome.
Yeah, it's exciting to see that there's a Subaru factory team there using the forest
or hybrid and it will be exciting to see how the race turns out overall.
Yeah.
Yeah.
It's been handling everything like a typical Subaru during competition.
It's a competition, not a race, just to make sure we're all clear there for everybody.
Okay.
But yeah, it's been doing great.
It's not a plug-in hybrid, so it just uses regular fuel, it's just fuel efficient, and
it has all of the amazing things that a Subaru all-wheel drive has.
Yeah, it's great.

I didn't really know what to go next.

So, you're talking to Team Disco, Team Desert Disco, I'm the driver, Emmy Hall, and Kendra
Miller is my navigator.
Hello.
So thanks for having us on.
So we're in the Crosstrek and we were hoping to be able to get the hybrid, but it just
came out too late.
So we're in the pure gas, yeah, pure gas, Crosstrek wilderness, so we've got that extra
little bit of ground clearance, which is nice.
How's it doing?
Better gear ratio.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, and the better gear ratio as well.
Honestly, today we went up and did some really sketchy stuff that would have been fine
and easy in a four-wheel drive, and we were like, all right, I guess we're going
on this muddy trail, and I guess we're going down this muddy trail.
I guess we'll, yeah, like there were some things today where I was like, I can't
believe that we're going to do this in this little Subaru, and it did it.
Yeah, because we, I mean, at one point when we were doing like testing and stuff, we
felt like we had found sort of the limit for steepness and some sand dunes, and we
thought this was much steeper, and it just turned right up.
I mean, I didn't lift the entire, I mean, I started from a plane, a flat plane,
and I floored it, and I did not lift until we got up to the very top.
But we made it up to the top, and it was super exciting.
And we laughed and had a screened and had a great time.
Yep.
That's good.
And were you coming from a four-wheel drive before this?
Well, yeah.
Oh, I did drive a last year, but yeah, mostly four-by-four, yeah.
Yeah, in competition, yes.
My last time doing it, I was in the Rivian R1T, which technically is not
four-wheel drive because there's no transfer case.
Yeah.
It's a four-wheel drive.
And then, like, Kendra had the cross-track at home in 2015.
Oh.
2016.
Oh, sorry, 2016.
Yeah.
2016, she just turned 100K last week.
Happy birthday.
Very nice.
Yeah, and I'm a Miata in that, so my off-road vehicle's actually
a lifted Miata, so I kind of come from a weird different world.
Yeah, I saw that.
That's interesting, and I'm sure a lot of fun.
Well, we're not kicking them on the rally, that's my answer.

Yeah, yeah.
All right, Kathleen, how are you doing?
Oh, they're not here.
Oh, they're not there?
She's here at the rally, but we couldn't find her in the tent.
I'm not sure where she is.
Oh, okay.
But I can tell you, I feel like you're doing pretty well, like, yeah.
In terms of, like, even though they're rookies, they've been out,
like, hanging up in here before.
Oh, has she?
Yeah.
Oh, it's Jordan's second year here.
Yeah, okay.
Okay, okay, rookie.
Okay.
Oh, they seem to be doing really well.
Yeah.
I mean, they don't, being in a standard cross track,
they don't quite have these vanses, but it's a little lifted.
I think she has, what, like, a one-and-a-half hints on it.
I don't remember.
Yeah, but I can tell.
I'm sending the Iron Man suspension.
Yeah, I like to get some good play things.
And, but yeah, and so they have to make some more
conservative choices with the routes a little bit than we do.
But they seem to be doing really great.
Yeah.
I haven't, I personally have not looked at the standard.
I don't know where they are.
If you guys have looked at the standard, you cannot say,
I need to look at it.
They don't, they've been kicking butt.
Yeah.
They're definitely, you know, hot, very competitive this year.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
So that's really, that's really cool to see them.
We'll just see.

The Subaru's are kicking some butts.
Yeah, I love that.

And even though today was really hard and I want to see myself in the face,
it's still really, it's still not real.
But like, no, I do want to, I want to go cry somewhere in the hole.

We've been having fun with each other.
Just spoken fun and having a good old time.

So what is different in overall for the Rebell rally?
Is there anything different that the Rebell is doing for the drivers and for the base camp
and, and I guess maybe what will come at the end of the event, the competition,
since it's the 10-year anniversary?
We don't, we don't know.
Yeah, we don't know what to expect.
They've given us, we have an extra day of competition this year.
Extra day of competition, more, yeah, more pack-up mornings.
So there's a lot, and lots of pack-ups, which makes mornings very challenging.
What did you guys draw for this morning?
The 53.
Oh, you're still looking, we got five.
I would rather.
That's cool.

It was brutal waiting around so long for the morning.
And then, no, what else are they doing?
Yeah, the extra day of competition.
And they brought back some trails and courses and different things that worked this year.
Yeah, that were kind of favorites.
And then they've also, uh, redemption.
Even though we may be base camps in some places we've been before,
they've taken us on roads that we've never traveled before.
So that's kind of nice, uh, quite familiarity, but a lot new.
Oh, we went up the highest pass.
Yeah, we did.
That was overpass in California.
I never thought there was an overpass here in Colorado.
But that was absolutely cool.
Yeah, that was round.
Yeah.
Very high alpine mountain pass over some counties.
That was pretty round.
That was like 100 years ago.
Yep.
Was it three days ago?
Like I said, a hundred years.
Do y'all start losing track of time as you go through the days?
Yeah, yeah, yeah, absolutely.
We don't even know what day the weekend is.
I think it's Tuesday.

It's day five.
Why do we not have tacos tonight?
We already had tacos.
Oh, yeah.
The year goes on for everything.
Well, I hope the Subaru community is out there rooting us on online.
Oh, they are.
Because we didn't see anything before.
Yeah.
But hopefully the Subaru community is really, you know,
you know, coming to bat and making some noise because the Subaru's really showing up this year.
And we're all excited to be here.
Yep.
The year is two percent.
Yeah.
Yeah, it's very cool.
So Raleigh photographers are getting great photos and videos and stuff of us.
Today, even when we were working together and they were coming down and I was like,
oh, there's Raleigh photographers of us today.
That was fun.
That was fun.
Yeah.
But we're not working together.
We're not working together.
So go.
Who is this guy?
Can you go through a typical day of like you get up and then because you camp overnight
in a tent, correct?
And then you get up, pack up, start the competition for the day and then finish
and then set up camp and then camp overnight.
So kind of go through your day.
Yeah, but there's so much more than that.
Oh, I'm sure.
So much more than that.
So like you get up and then the navigator will go in and yeah, you get up at 5 a.m.
The navigator will go in and get the map and get started on plotting.
If you're packing up that day, the driver will like break down camp, get all your stuff,
get it into the car, make sure that the car is okay.
Make sure that there hasn't been any like, like slow leaks overnight or anything
like that with your tires and like make sure everything's fine.
Usually that will take about like 25 minutes, a half an hour.
Then you go in, then you have to figure out like, is there an enduro that day?
Do you have to do the enduro math?
Like there's so much more and then you have to be in your car 15 minutes
before your start time.
And then you run into your friend.
Right.
Okay, so it's like two hours and you've already done like a whole day's worth of work.
Or more.
Yeah.
There are many times I don't accomplish that much in one day.
Exactly.
It's around 5, 7 a.m.
Yeah.
Well, mostly if we remember to eat during the day.
I haven't brushed my teeth today.
Yeah.
I'm not that fast though, does it?
The day I brush my teeth, I could brush my teeth.
Yeah.
I'm a cute Russian too because they're right here in my pocket.
Yeah.
And then you go out and work for 10 hours and chase all the checkpoints
and do as much as you can and get all the points that you can.
And then it's...
Then you get to do it all at once.
And then you just have to wait in the fuel line after we get to the big
mechanic and eat some dinner and go to bed and start over the next day.
Set up a camp.
If it's not set up a camp today, we have done an awesome job.
Select your stuff from the car to...
Yeah, we don't get to camp right by our car, so we have to carry it.
Oh.
There are cars going around.
Cars are inbounded.
We don't have access to them for...
We get access to the vehicle for one hour after we come into base camp.
And that includes fueling.
That includes unpacking your car and includes going to the mechanic.
But if you need to spend more time there, because of mechanical issues,
you've got to do a little race period.
But then after an hour is left, you have no access to your car anymore.
Interesting.
Wow.
That's...
Unless you're in the mechanic.
Yeah, unless you're in the mechanic.
So today I changed the flat.
We came in on a flat tire, so we changed that as a mechanic.
And that's really the only thing.
I changed my air filter yesterday.
So they've been really great.
I mean, it's been nice.
So I've taken some pretty hard hits and everything a bit.
I'm like, wow, it's still tracking straight.
That's pretty amazing.
That's amazing.
I just want to get played on a boulder that was hiding in a bush yesterday.
And it makes a little bit of a rattle.
It's fine.

Like when you're just like, is that column big enough for me to worry about?
Yeah.
Because there's so many other things to worry about.
And like, I have some little problems with our car that I should worry about,
but I'm like, I can't worry about it.
