00:00
Hello everybody, welcome to another bonus episode.
00:14
This is a bonus episode for Subifest, Texas 2025.
00:19
In this episode, I only had two conversations and you will hear those later on and I'm not
00:26
going to announce who they were.
00:29
One person I have talked to a few times before, another person I had never talked to and it
00:35
was great to get that person on the mic.
00:38
So this bonus episode from Subifest, Texas is going to be a little bit different than
00:42
the one from last year because again, I didn't have many conversations, but I did do some
00:48
We got to see all the cool cars and we got to see Betty driving around and got to
00:54
see some friends again and so that was really cool.
00:59
We just all enjoyed the show and had a good time and walked around and really didn't do
01:05
a whole lot and I didn't really want to get too much content either.
01:10
I saw Rihanna Gelsamino, she was the first person I saw walking in and I didn't record
01:14
with her just because I recorded with her at other locations and she was also busy.
01:20
So Subifest is a lot different than Overland Expo because the people that are there just
01:30
always going, going, going.
01:32
They're being pulled around to come over here and go over there and do the autograph signings.
01:38
So I don't really want to bother them too much because I know that they have so much
01:43
So I didn't talk to Rihanna, didn't talk to Bucky, so I don't like bothering
01:50
them when I see them running around kind of crazy and having a lot of stuff to do.
01:55
So there's just really a little bit of me walking around and talking but I wanted to
02:00
put this out anyway even though there's not a ton of content because there is one
02:05
conversation that I really wanted to include in this bonus episode.
02:11
But so the day started off really nice and cool and like I mean it felt really really
02:19
good in the morning and then it started to heat up because it's Texas and of course the
02:23
day is going to get warmer and warmer and Subifest Texas went on until three o'clock
02:30
it was from ten to no it was from nine to three and around two o'clock I was telling
02:36
everybody that I was with I'm like I gotta go.
02:39
I wasn't drinking enough water of course that's on me and I didn't eat until really
02:46
late so I was like really hungry and my body just didn't have the energy that it
02:53
needed but I was feeling I was feeling like I was getting heat exhaustion
02:58
because I was feeling kind of weak and like when we got in the car and we were
03:05
sitting there driving off like I just I did not feel good plus I didn't get
03:10
that much sleep the night before I think I had like maybe four hours of
03:14
sleep so not drinking enough water not eating soon enough and it getting to be
03:21
really really hot and then not drinking like during the times that it was really
03:26
hot also but also not hydrating before I went there on top of not getting
03:32
enough sleep it was just not a good combination so we ended up leaving it
03:36
to and so we didn't get a chance to like I said goodbye to some people but
03:41
I didn't get a chance to say goodbye to everybody like I wanted to I was like I
03:44
just got to get out of here because I'm not I'm not doing too well and I've
03:48
never really felt like that before so I just you know I apologize if you're
03:54
listening to this and I saw you there you saw me and I didn't get a chance to
03:57
see you I apologize that I didn't stick around until later on but I just
04:03
I needed to go and it took me a while to recover we went and after that we
04:08
went and got some some coffees and like even sitting there drinking those it
04:14
took me a while to recover and kind of get back to normal but by the end of the
04:20
evening everything was good and I don't even I don't really remember what we
04:25
did that evening but then the next day on Sunday we ended up going to Fort
04:32
Worth and we went to the Fort Worth water gardens and then we also went to
04:38
spiral diner which is the place where I get the pancakes that I love however I
04:44
did not get pancakes this time it's very very hard to not get pancakes but I
04:50
wanted to get something different so I ended up getting something different and
04:53
I ended up getting the they have like a breakfast quesadilla which was really
04:58
good so I got that and we always have to get their queso because their queso is
05:03
just really really good but yeah I mean we had a good time and the whole
05:09
weekend ended up being good and then of course you know I kind of spent a
05:14
little bit of money while I was there and then I get back to work on
05:17
Monday only to find out that I no longer have a job so of course it
05:22
sucks not having a full-time income now but my severance is going on for a little
05:28
while I think I'll be good through the end of the year most likely and then I'm
05:33
working at doing door dash and I might even find another part-time job just
05:38
to help supplement during that time but I do have my resume out to some
05:43
places so I'm hopeful but I'm just I'm not letting it bring me down I'm
05:47
not gonna let it get me stressed out and because I just I know that things
05:51
will be taken care of and I am just I'm extremely grateful to to the patrons for
05:58
the people that signed up to become a patron and help support the podcast that
06:02
is definitely going to help so I really really appreciate it so if you haven't
06:07
signed up and you would like to and if you're able to help support the
06:09
podcast you can go to my link tree and there's a link for patreon that
06:14
says support the podcast and it would be very very much appreciated and
06:18
definitely very helpful so thank you all so much I really really appreciate it
06:22
really does help and also go check out the YouTube channel it's the subi and
06:27
you channel so it's not going to be like video versions of the episodes it's
06:34
mainly going to be just Subaru like general Subaru related stuff stuff but
06:40
with about my car also there's going to be things like I'll cover events
06:44
future events but I'm also going to upload I have videos and other things
06:49
that I'm going to upload from previous events like the previous Overland Expo
06:54
events I'm going to be uploading those and I'll just you know see what else
06:59
comes along but also want to do like some videos on brands that I have on my
07:04
car and some of the partners that I've had because I appreciate their
07:08
support as well and it's fun working with brands as we all know
07:12
getting that opportunity to do that so that's really what the channel is going
07:16
to be about is just kind of general stuff and I'm looking forward to seeing
07:20
where it goes sort of have a plan but I know it's like really good to have an
07:25
actual plan but it's it's very new to me I'm still trying to figure YouTube
07:30
out and how it works what I can do what I can't do and like I tried to
07:35
include a link for one of the videos that I posted early on or one of the
07:40
first videos and it said that like I'm not eligible to post a link yet so I
07:47
think I have to have more YouTube history or something before I can post links
07:51
and so yeah I don't know I'm still I've been doing some research and trying to
07:57
figure some things out but I know there are some people out there that
08:00
said they will be able to help me out as well so I'll get it figured out but
08:04
I'm just gonna upload videos you know I don't have to have everything figured
08:07
out just upload videos and have y'all watch them and share them and that would
08:12
be very much appreciated so we'll get into this episode now and I hope you enjoy it
08:28
I've got my mic here so I might as well get this thing started but I'm here at
08:33
Subifest Texas this is the third year that they've been doing this here it's
08:38
started off with some really nice weather it's pretty cool this morning but I
08:43
know it's gonna warm up quickly because we are in Texas but yeah I'm here at
08:47
Subifest Texas I walked in the first person I saw was Rihanna Gelsamino so
08:52
that was really cool to see her again I just saw her last weekend when I was
08:57
at Overland Expo in Virginia and I was really great to catch up with her
09:02
again there and then now here so I'm just walking around checking things out
09:06
looking at Betty right now she's looking good it's all bucky over there just
09:12
trying to set his time his fastest time at the simulator so that's been really
09:17
cool but yeah it's been it's been great so far running into people like John
09:25
and Jonathan Sage the cross track what's up everyone how's it going man doing
09:30
good yeah so just making my rounds here and checking things out but I'm going
09:39
to hop off the mic now and go say hi to some people and check out some more of
09:45
the event before it officially gets started you can possibly hear Adam
09:50
there in the background he's up in the booth making announcements so anyway yeah
09:58
we'll get this thing going so right there I ran into Jonathan who goes by
10:03
Sage the cross track and then I need to finding him a little bit later on because
10:07
he was standing in line to check in with Roman who goes by go subi adventures
10:12
who I just had on the podcast and then also with John who goes by Texas
10:18
Tiggeru and so I just stood there chatted with them for a while and then ended up
10:23
walking around looking around some more but they they had their cars all set up
10:27
close to each other and so it's really nice to go back over there later on see
10:32
their rigs of course and John Sage the cross track he had a topography wrap
10:38
on his car that his wife had gotten for him and it looked really good and he
10:43
ended up winning I think it was best off-road rig which was really cool so he
10:49
was he was there with Lone Star Subis and I think there was like three people
10:54
from their group that ended up winning awards so or trophies so it was
10:59
really cool and the trophies were really nice they they were made very well
11:03
they were metal and he was very happy also of course walking around I saw
11:09
that they were preparing Betty to go out for Bucky to do the ride-alongs
11:13
and just you know do some donuts and a little exhibition driving and everything
11:16
so I ended up catching up with Betty and we chatted for a little bit but it's
11:22
kind of a one-way conversation it was mostly her talking
11:33
it's always cool to see them getting Betty started up because a huge crowd
11:37
always ends up you know swarming around Betty and looking at her and
11:42
taking videos and Bucky was you know getting down and doing some video at the
11:48
exhaust as well so that was a lot of fun as always so when we made our way around
11:54
their show cars we ended up catching up with Jonathan and Roman again and also
12:00
John who goes by Texas Tiggeroo so I had a little conversation with him I
12:05
didn't end up talking to Roman and Jonathan because I just I didn't end up
12:10
getting around to it but I've also had them on the episode or each of them
12:14
have had their own episode but John has not yet had an episode so I always like
12:19
to catch up with him it was great to see him in Overland Expo in Flagstaff
12:24
because he had driven up there for that event but it was nice to see him
12:28
here at Subifest again so we caught up for a little bit and we'll
12:31
eventually get a full episode for him but here was our little conversation
12:40
it helps with the experience. When are we going to get together and do a full interview?
12:43
I know we need to make it happen. Next year I have like so many lined up and I definitely want to do some inversions here.
12:53
Tigger's my daily driver and I'll be around so alright let's do it.
12:58
Okay I am here at Subifest Texas and we've got Betty just knocked over a cone
13:06
Bucky's out there doing ride-alongs but I'm here with John and Texas Tiggeroo how's it going?
13:12
It's going fantastic as usual at Subifest. Yeah yeah yeah what time did you have to get here to set up?
13:21
We met at six o'clock this morning to roll in at like six fifteen and we were one of the first ones to get in here this morning.
13:31
Okay nice so have you been in the show all three years that Subifest has been here in Texas?
13:37
Yes this is my third year in the show and I hope to show every year that I can.
13:44
Yeah yeah great and it's always nice seeing Tigger. You've got so much stuff on it
13:51
I know it draws a lot of attention which is really cool because you put in a lot of work
13:55
and you've done a great job and I think it looks amazing as always.
13:59
I'm trying to change it up just a little bit each year and this year we went with skeletons
14:04
since it's fairly close to Halloween and no one else is doing Halloween so why not?
14:11
We're in October it's close enough so you won something last year didn't you?
14:18
So last year I won runner-up for Crosstrak and I was selected for the Subimods Choice Award
14:28
which was selected by the sponsor as the vehicle and person that best represented the Subaru Lifestyle.
14:37
Okay great so that blew me away I was not expecting that at all.
14:41
Yeah yeah it's definitely a great car and you've done like I said you've done a lot to it
14:46
and it's always great seeing it and when was the last time you went off-roading
14:52
because we were going to go to Bastrop and apparently it's getting to a point where we may not
14:57
be able to go out there anymore.
14:58
Right I'm hearing bad things about Bastrop as well.
15:01
I did make it to Overland Expo West and Flagstaff and that was really my last true off-roading experience with it.
15:11
I'm still doing heavy sweep at Raleigh ready so they had two events already this year
15:18
there's another one in two weeks and one in December and I'll be at both of those as a volunteer heavy sweep.
15:25
Okay so you're not actually going out there with your car are you just out there volunteering?
15:29
I'm not racing but I am on track with my car between events.
15:33
I do course changeovers and pick up debris and car parts that have fallen off.
15:41
So people back in help with recovery if somebody breaks down.
15:44
So yeah I got to actually take it out on the track which is really cool a lot of fun.
15:49
I've been wanting to do that with Pearl but I'm also a little scared to do that because I have a feeling that
15:56
I would get out there and start having fun and then just pushing harder and pushing harder
16:00
and then I'm afraid to break something because then of course I'd have to drive home.
16:04
Right and that's why you need the bumper sticker on your dash that says
16:08
remember you'd have to drive it home.
16:12
Well I wasn't going to go that route.
16:18
Now we're going in reverse.
16:20
Yeah he was trying to spin around and do a 360 and I think he lost a little control there.
16:28
But no doubt people getting ride-alongs are having a good time.
16:34
Yeah it was great chatting with you.
16:36
Likewise thanks for stopping in.
16:38
Definitely getting you in for a full episode.
16:40
I want to do it in person too.
16:42
I need to come down and run Cheeseburger Loop with you guys.
16:45
That is on my bucket list for next year.
16:47
Yeah so then maybe we just plan it for that.
16:50
Because that's an open park and it's a state park.
16:53
So we're just worried about getting shut down.
16:56
Sounds like a plan.
17:02
I got to give a huge shout out to Road for putting together these great road wireless
17:07
pro microphones because you've got all the noise in the background and what I
17:12
really like about them and what I learned about them when I was doing the research to
17:17
get these is they don't clip.
17:19
So even with all the noise in the background from Betty driving around and making a bunch
17:25
of noise it still sounds pretty clear and it doesn't get all distorted and you
17:30
don't get the clipping because it has what they call 32-bit float.
17:34
I don't know a whole lot about it but what I do know is that that's the
17:38
technology that's built into these microphones that help them from not clipping
17:42
but I'm just so grateful to have these because then at events I can go anywhere
17:48
in the event and record with somebody and I absolutely love that flexibility
17:53
and I look forward to continuing to use these at future events
17:57
and who knows hopefully next year I'll get out to even more events
18:01
because that would be really, really exciting to get out to more events.
18:05
I know people have asked me if I'm going to make it here and there
18:08
and it's not always easy to do that but maybe 2026 is going to be the year.
18:12
This next and last conversation I was very, very grateful to get
18:17
and it was just it was all a matter of timing and caught up with this person
18:23
and it just happened to work out perfectly and I'm very, very grateful
18:28
for this person for their time and just for taking the time to sit down
18:34
and chat with me on the mic but so I'm just going to go ahead and play it now
18:40
and we'll get into this conversation with this guy that many of you know.
18:46
I am at Subifes, Texas here and I'm sitting with Scott's bead man how's it going?
18:50
Hello, hello. How are you doing today?
18:53
Great, great. Better than I deserve.
18:55
The weather, we were just talking about all the Subifes this year
18:59
we could not have had a better year of Subifes throughout all the different
19:03
places we've been, the weather has been amazing, we haven't been rained out once
19:07
I feel fortunate for that.
19:09
Yeah, I know that's great because that could be a potential downer for the event.
19:15
I just came off of the Overland Expo series and I was in Virginia last weekend
19:22
and they said last year there was a pretty big storm that came through
19:25
and so I can imagine that would be a little tough.
19:29
Yeah, but fortunately the weather's beautiful, sunny Texas here
19:33
I'm thankful to be able to get a little bit of, I'm in North Carolina
19:37
so I'm soaking up as much of the vitamin D as I can to prepare for the winter months.
19:42
Yeah, there's definitely plenty over here and it is nice to be in the shade though occasionally
19:46
because it does get hot out there.
19:48
So what has your experience been like at Subifes, Texas, Boxer Fest, Wicked Big Meet?
19:53
I know we've got several events across the country
19:56
and it's great for you to be a part of it and do the ride-alongs and everything
20:00
so how has it been for you?
20:02
Yeah, it's great, I love coming out and meeting all the enthusiasts
20:06
that Subaru has done such an amazing job in cultivating
20:10
The community is so great, I think it's easy to kind of take that for granted
20:19
but the people here are always really nice
20:23
and you know I get the really cool job of demonstrating the, you know
20:30
this year has been typically the WRX TS on the autocrosses
20:34
and giving people a ride and demonstrating sort of the potential of what the cars can do
20:39
and kind of demonstrate how well these cars are made, what the real potential of the car is
20:46
and that's a super fun thing to do
20:50
I get to give guys and girls a great experience out there on the autocross courses
20:55
and it's really fun for me too as a racing driver
20:58
I really enjoy making cars go around circuits as fast as they can
21:04
so that challenge, whether it's an autocross course here in Texas
21:08
or a Formula One car in Monaco, the focuses and the techniques and strategies are really the same
21:15
so I enjoy constantly trying to find time
21:19
I know it's great, I know my son was able to get a ride along with you last year
21:23
so I know he enjoyed that at CBFS Texas
21:26
so you give people a great experience and a chance to meet you
21:31
and just have some fun, like you said, see what these cars can do
21:34
because they're really great cars, they're a lot of fun
21:37
and I have yet to drive a WRX
21:40
well, I've driven like a tuned and boosted WRX
21:44
but I haven't driven like a stock WRX
21:46
and I want to drive one just to see how they are
21:48
because I've heard that they've got their smooth and they shift well
21:51
and I think it would be a fun experience to do that
21:54
but yeah, it's great to have you here at these events too
21:57
and I'm sure it's a little bit different than driving Project Midnight
22:00
but still a great experience and you get to share that with other people
22:04
Right, one of these days we'll get Project Midnight out here
22:07
and I'm really looking forward to that time
22:10
but yeah, I think one of the comments I get the most
22:13
the two comments I get the most are like how do you get started in racing
22:17
and the cool thing about coming to this event is you have two really
22:21
really important pieces to how you do that
22:25
you have iRacing rigs set up here that people can experience driving
22:29
in a virtual setting which with how far physics has come
22:33
is unbelievably helpful
22:36
it's a non-starter, you have to
22:38
if you want to be a racing driver in any form
22:41
you have to start doing that
22:44
because the ability to collect experience and hone your craft
22:47
is so affordable in that setting and so easy
22:50
and then you have an autocross course here where you can take
22:53
what you're learning on the sim and try that
22:56
in a real life setting with real physics
22:59
and regardless of what car you have
23:05
driving around the autocross course is extremely useful
23:09
and I think a lot of guys that are hesitant to drive
23:12
because their cars aren't tuned up
23:15
or aren't modded in the correct way
23:17
and so that's another reason I like driving our stock cars out here
23:20
and showing how much potential is really there
23:23
from just driving correctly
23:26
as a person that is a motor racing athlete
23:30
this whole life I love coming to the event like this
23:33
because there's so much core pieces of motor racing here
23:36
I've tried the simulator I think last year
23:39
at one of the other events and it wasn't easy
23:42
when you don't really know how to do it
23:44
and then I watched one of the things that I was doing
23:47
is I wasn't shifting gears fast enough
23:50
and then I see Bucky get on and he's like shifting really quick
23:53
and I'm like okay that's definitely one key to it
23:56
and because you're simulating a really powerful car
24:02
and I'm used to driving a 2.0 cross track
24:06
you know that's really slow
24:08
so watching him do it
24:10
and other people that are more experienced
24:12
it's like definitely a really good skill
24:15
but yeah I think it would be fun
24:17
even though my cross track is slow
24:19
I think it would be fun to drive it out on the autocross course
24:21
sometime just to see what I can do with it
24:23
yeah look you get five sessions I believe
24:25
so you know every time you're going to go out there
24:27
you're going to try to learn something
24:29
faster and that's the point of it
24:35
you try a technique or a strategy
24:37
and you see if that makes me go faster or slower
24:39
and that process of iteration never ends
24:42
and that's really the piece that I love
24:44
but to your point the simulators here
24:47
are based on the race car
24:49
and so with the ALS
24:51
and where the power band is that engine
24:54
you shift really quickly
24:56
a lot differently than you would on the road
24:58
yeah so I don't want to get into a lot of other stuff
25:01
like history and everything
25:03
but the only question I do want to ask
25:05
is when did you start racing like how old were you
25:08
well look I started racing when I was three years old
25:11
because at three years old I was watching my dad race go-karts
25:14
and I was watching racing on TV
25:16
and so my introduction to motor racing was really young
25:19
I began racing video games
25:22
you know originally on probably like the first PlayStation
25:25
and then ultimately by the time I was a teenager
25:28
they had I think IndyCar95 came out on the PC
25:32
and I'd play that with some friends
25:35
but the first time I actually got into a go-kart
25:40
so actually a bit late for most of my peers
25:44
but you know karting was the primary
25:49
thing that I drove from
25:51
age of 10 until I was 18 and moved here up
25:55
now you're here doing all kinds of fun things with Subaru
25:58
I've got to drive a lot of different type of racecars
26:01
from Formula 1 to NASCAR to rally
26:04
it's been a heck of a journey
26:07
and something I'm super grateful to have been able to experience
26:12
well thank you so much for taking some time
26:14
to hop on the mic with me
26:15
it's great to see you again
26:17
and I hope you enjoy the rest of the event
26:19
you've got one more Subi Fest to go in Florida
26:22
and now close out the season
26:25
thanks so much for having me
26:26
you're welcome, thank you
26:30
well that was a really cool experience
26:32
I am so grateful that I had a chance to catch up with Scott
26:37
and get him on the mic
26:38
and I'm extremely grateful to him
26:40
for taking the time to chat with me
26:43
and talk a little bit about his experience at the Subi events
26:48
and then also a little bit of his history of racing
26:52
so that's super super great that I was able to get him on
26:55
and hopefully I can potentially get him on for a full episode
27:00
at some point and get some more information
27:04
but that will have to be very carefully curated
27:10
but I think it can happen
27:12
it might take some time and a little bit of work
27:15
but it would be worth it
27:16
because I think it would be really really cool to have him on
27:20
thank you so much for taking time out of your day
27:23
to listen to this episode
27:25
I really appreciate everybody sticking around
27:27
I appreciate all of the people that have been here
27:30
since the very beginning
27:32
and then also people that have come on board
27:34
throughout the years
27:35
and we're getting close to closing out
27:38
five years of doing the podcast
27:40
which seems pretty crazy
27:42
but I'm glad that I'm still able to do it
27:45
I'm glad that people are still sticking around
27:48
and I'm very glad and grateful
27:50
and very thankful for all the patrons
27:52
I really really appreciate it
27:54
thank you all so much
27:56
and please continue to share
27:58
also again please go subscribe to the YouTube channel
28:02
and I look forward to seeing you on another episode
28:06
or talking to you through this microphone
28:11
and I hope that I get to see more people
28:13
out there in the community
28:15
and at events in 2026
28:17
so we'll see how that goes
28:19
but I'll do what I can to make it out
28:23
and put out more content
28:25
so thank you all so much
28:26
I hope you all have a wonderful weekend
