Brussels replacing Geneva by the look of it as Europe's big EV launchpad with the show reflecting not aspirational concepts

but production-ready metal that we can get our groppy little hands on very soon.

There were prototypes. I won't go into those concept cars as well that showed up

because they haven't got time for that, but maybe that's a bonus show in future weeks.

Okay, big one was Keer EV2.

That was the world premiere of this B-segment crossover.

Production begins in February.

Two batteries, 42 and 61. That's gross.

The small battery will do 197 miles or 317Ks.

The big battery, 278 miles or 448 kilometers.

The usable capacity in Kears normally around 90, 92%.

Charging on a 400 volt version of EGMP means about 30 minutes for both battery packs,

realistically 10 to 80.

22 kilowatts AC charging, front wheel drive and actually less power on the long range one,

which is, I don't understand it.

Normally you'd put the same motor inside the vehicle, but every source that I could find,

every review, every journalist says, I just couldn't get our confirmation from Keer.

Small battery, 108 kilowatt motor, long range version, 100 kilowatts.

I know not why.

So, wheelbase on this 2.5 meters, quite a compact car, but loads of storage, a frunk.

Again, not huge, but you can get your charging cables in there.

But what this Keer EV2 did, and check out a bonus edition of the show on your feed,

which I talk only about the Keer EV2, it brings premium features at a 25,000 pound or 30,000 euro price point.

Sliding rear seats and reclining rear seats.

So, want to carry four adults in comfort.

The four-seater version, without the little middle bit that you can perch on,

is for genuinely comfortable seats in the car.

Slide the seats back, so you've not got much boot space.

So you won't be taking four adults and their luggage.

And there's four adults comfortably in this car with loads of legroom.

Move the back seats forward, big old boot for your shopping.

So, vehicle to load and vehicle to grid ready.

That is just a tick box at the minute.

There's no utilities that you can just turn a key and be like, oh, I'll have your V2G tariff, please.

And they come and fit the box and do everything.

But that's coming, we hope, anyway.

All the drive resistance on Hyundai's and Kears, highway driving assist too.

And that package, all very good.

Had it on the Kona, it was excellent.

Digital key, pet mode, good.

And big driver displays as well.

Production starts in Slovakia next month.

Pricing at 30,000 euro, 25,000 pounds, this is the real deal.

Alright, let's talk about the Renault Twingo public debut of an A-segment car.

Deliveries begin autumn, they say.

So, you've seen the little Nissan Micra.

Now meet Renault Twingo.

27.5 kilowatt hour battery.

A little 163 miles or 263 kilometers.

6.6 kilowatt AC charging.

An optional charge pack to go to 11.

And then that becomes bidirectional AC.

Okay, and 50 kilowatt DC.

This is very much aimed at keeping the cost down.

And you know what, I'm absolutely fine with that.

Lots of people will say the specs aren't great.

This is a use case car.

This will carry small families, young couples, individuals that want reliable mobility,

especially in European cities.

LFP pack on this, again, sliding rear seats.

So you've got the option.

A fralding front passenger backrest so you can load long things in.

Comes with proper one-pedal driving.

It's a great architecture and great interior minimalist design as well.

Should start well under 20,000.

Get some offers for the Evolution trim.

Get some offers from Renault dealers on that.

And you're going to get your monthly price way down.

Live somewhere like France where you've got the government subsidies.

And that could be a 14, 15,000 euro car.

Expected to mirror the sub 20,000 pricing of similar vehicles.

Twingo E-Tech has remarkable affordability.

You wait till you get some secondhand deals on that in three years time.

Or even some dealer monthly offers.

Renault is always really good with offers, at least here anyway.

And you're going to get some great motoring on that.

Now, at a public debut of the Volkswagen ID Polo,

that is a 38 or 56 kilowatt hour pack coming middle of this year.

Both on WLTP say that they're going to do either 280 miles WLTP on the big pack.

56 kilowatt hour couldn't get one for the small pack.

DC charging at 130.

AC at 22 kilowatts optional. 22 kilowatt AC optional is killer for city cars, by the way.

You might not have home charging.

You might live in an apartment, but with 22 kilowatt AC,

you go to do your supermarket shopping for an hour or two.

Maybe you're going to go to a leisure park, take in a movie for a couple of hours,

maybe grab a meal there as well.

You're fully charged.

That's how these cars are going to be used.

They'll probably never be DC fast charged.

These smaller city cars, ID Polo coming in rear wheel drive,

could be fun to drive this thing with 435 litres of boot space,

which is even bigger than the combustion Polo.

And yet the external dimensions are pretty much the same.

A proper five-seater switchgear returns.

The new way of thinking of Volkswagen.

Gone are all the silly touchscreen sliders for stuff that should just be the jab of a button.

MEB plus platform on this pricing around 22,000.

ID Polo's most significant innovation is the philosophical one.

We got it wrong with the software and the touch screens on MEB platform

and everything that came on it.

The buttons are back.

That was a ridiculous phase of automotive history, wasn't it?

And so that's good because there's so many things that you shouldn't even need to,

that your eyes shouldn't need to leave the road and you just reach down

because you know where your muscle memory is, you touch the wheel or the button.

And the radio changes volume.

Almost like that was a solved problem.

Kids, yeah? Yeah?

Anyway, let's move on.

BYD ZATO turned up for the European launch.

That's under the Yuan up in China.

European sales begin, all they would say is this year.

Two battery packs, 32 or 45 kilowatt hours.

DC charging either at 45 or 88 kilowatts.

Yeah, that's slow.

This is a city car.

AC charging at 11 kilowatts.

Optional front wheel drive on this 120 kilowatt motor.

Around 400 liters of boot space and a proper five-seater.

Again, LFP pack on this loads of safety features, big screens,

smartphone integration because you'll be plugging your phone into this

at about 25,000 starting price.

In China, it starts under 100,000 U.M.

So it's a very cheap car there.

Affordable European EV segment for the ATTO 2 from BYD.

The LFP pack is a pragmatic choice.

Keeps the price down.

You can keep it charged to 100%.

It wants to be.

And it'll undercut the Kia EV2 and Renault 5,

but obviously you're taking a punt on a Chinese name.

I think BYD is a pretty safe punt,

but for a lot of people who aren't into cars, that'll be a leap of faith.

And also the styling is it doesn't look like a Kia EV2,

which is boxy but funky and modern and like a Renault 5.

It makes me smile.

If I owned a Renault 5, I'd definitely do the look over the shoulder thing

when I walked away from the car every time I parked it

because whenever I see one on the roads, they make me smile.

Leap motor were there with their B03X.

That's the A10, otherwise known as, it's again a B segment crossover.

And so single configuration on this leap motor

didn't confirm the capacity, probably 60 kilowatt hours,

range maybe 500 kilometers WLTP, 100 kilowatt DC fast charging

on this little front wheel drive compact crossover B segment Chinese car.

And quite a minimalist interior, no buttons in this one.

Again, China pricing sub 100,000 yuan on this.

And so this isn't going to be an expensive car when it comes over here.

No confirmation on pricing, but Leap Motor Brussels appearance

appears that Stellantis are very confident in bringing more of those Chinese cars over to Europe.

It sits between the ultra budget cars like the Renault Twingo or Leap Motor's own T03

and Leap Motor's own large SUV, which is the C10.

Now there were some mid-range and premium EVs there as well.

One of those Chinese ones with the X-Pung P7, that got loads.

P7 Plus, I should say, I won the Zika 7 GT,

which is a shooting brake GT car in China called the 007.

But no James Bond over here, thank you.

So we'll get into those in a moment after the break, stick around.

Welcome back to the podcast looking at the big launches from Brussels Motor Show.

So the X-Pong P7 Plus got its European premiere.

Two big batteries on this, 62 or 75 kilowatt hours.

Both are LFP packs, by the way.

So expect some decent range on those.

This is the X-Pong P7 Plus is a fastback sedan.

Very swoopy, but under the skin, very impressive.

800-volt system and 5C charge rate.

That means if you can find a charger quick enough, 10 to 80 happens in 12 minutes.

So it peaks out at 446 kilowatts.

And finally, these crazy Chinese cars are coming into the European market.

The ones with really, really fast charging.

300 kilometers of range in 10 minutes of charging.

Have at it. That's amazing.

So you either get the base model rear-wheel drive or the all-wheel drive performance,

which will bring the time down to 4.4 seconds, 0 to 60.

Quite a large vehicle over 5 meters long, exactly 3 meter wheelbase.

Like the Hyundai Ioniq 5. That has an exactly 3 meter wheelbase.

This one's down to the millimeter.

And so this has loads of computing power.

What with it being Chinese?

So loads of autonomy, automated lane changes, adaptive cruise, autonomous parking,

both local and using remote app on that as well.

Big digital cockpit, 15.6 inch central screen, big instrument cluster,

big head-up display as well.

A very beautiful inside.

Napa leather, cashmere-like headliner, and very premium with ambient lighting.

Expect rear-wheel drive to start at about 44,000 euros when it comes over here.

But it's the spec under the skin that's really, really impressive on this.

The Zika 7 GT is sold as the 007 in China.

But whoever owns James Bond these days, which is Amazon,

would not be very happy about the 007 arriving here.

So they've called it the 7 GT.

It's a de-segment shooting brake.

And for my personal taste, best looking car that I saw at the show.

Incredible.

Shooting brake estate will look so at home on German autobahns

or shooting up the M1 motorway here.

It's definitely a more modern looking vehicle, but it's incredible.

Big battery, 100 kilowatt hours on this 407 miles WLTP.

And no, that's not as efficient as what we're seeing now with BMW iX3

and Volvo EX60, what they can do with big batteries.

So it's the efficiency comes down a little bit.

But you can get a small battery, big battery on this DC fast charging.

You know, I just said that 443 was pretty good for the...

146 was good for the X-Pung P7 Plus.

The Zika charges at 480 kilowatts.

Look, we're all friends here. Let's call it 500.

That's a half a megawatt of charging.

Five minutes ago, I was buying a Renault Zoe.

Okay, 10 years ago.

Didn't have DC charging when I got into my EV journey.

And now, in the blink of an eye, we've got these half megawatt charging cars.

Good luck finding a charger at the end of your road that will do it.

But still, I'd rather, in the chicken and egg situation, bring the car, right?

I'll have the car and then we'll get the charges in the ground.

Otherwise, we're going to put the charge in the ground.

No one will use them.

And then the charging networks make no money.

But I'll happily take it that way round if the car companies want to play that game

because the charges are there.

There's megawatt charging in China.

You know that already.

So 13 minutes to get 10 to 18.

13.

Like, I've been talking for 14 on the podcast.

We just refilled a Zika 7 GT and we're already off down the slip road.

I mean, it's ridiculous, isn't it?

11 kilowatts AC.

It did fine in Europe.

So rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive and tons of power.

475 kilowatts.

There's almost 700 horsepower in the all-wheel drive version.

A bit smaller, slightly smaller vehicle than the X-Pung P7 Plus.

But that shooting brake style looking very much like a Mercedes estate car.

Looks absolutely good.

That shooting brake is so gorgeous.

Call it a station wagon, if you will.

800-volt platform, obviously.

Performance retuned for when it arrives on European roads.

Obviously, it's Geely, Polestar, Volvo.

They know what they're doing.

Big digital cockpit and it'll start at 46,000 euros.

46,000.

This is not a 90,000 euro car.

All right.

That 7 GT has blown my socks off and I can't wait to have a play.

There is still an argument that if you have BMW i5 touring money,

or Mercedes AMG, EQE, even the SUV, you know, money,

then you might gravitate towards those.

But 46,000 euros, that's competitive.

All right.

I'll whip through a few premiers.

The Opel Vauxhall Grandland Electric.

That's a midsize SUV.

Production starts in 2026, they say, with a slightly bigger battery.

And just better, all-round.

I'll put the specs in the show notes in the appendix for you.

The Grandland Electric All-Wheel Drive marks their dual-motor architecture

in midsize SUV.

So 325 horsepower, all-wheel drive system.

Up against, maybe, say it, Turacos.

Even a Volkswagen ID buzz, possibly.

It's only a five-seater, this one.

400 kilometers of range.

So a practical family car is what Vauxhall and Opels are.

Talking of which, the Opel Vauxhall Astra Electric got updated and enhanced.

So the usable battery updated now.

It's 58 kilowatt hours.

The range goes up to 454 kilometers WLTP.

I think gross, it's about 65 kilowatt hours on the battery.

And so 10 to 80 knots disclosed.

Not sure if they've improved that.

It was about 130 kilowatts peak power on these vehicles before.

Front-wheel drive on this.

The Astra is a famous, famous model in terms of being affordable, reliable, family transport.

A very important car to go electric.

Actually, pretty efficient car when you think about it.

58 kilowatt hour usable.

And it now does 454 kilometers.

This new version, they've worked on improved thermal management and cell performance.

And so that's pretty decent.

Now, in the premium segment, the Mercedes-Benz CLA won European Car of the Year.

See a separate bonus show all about why I think it won.

I'll put the specs in the show notes for you.

Really impressive car.

European Car of the Year Victory underscores its technical excellence.

750 kilometers plus range.

No, it doesn't quite hit the 500 miles of the BMW X3 or the new Volvo EX60.

But still, 466 miles wouldn't kick that out of bed.

And it's just a really fantastic sized car in an era of massive SUVs.

Just genuinely 4.7 meters long, 1.85 meters wide.

More compact, perhaps.

But still like a big boot, big frunk in this one as well.

Big 50 liter frunk, I think of the CLA.

So, so many things going for it.

I don't need a massive SUV on my driveway.

But I would very, very much like a Mercedes-Benz CLA.

One critical limitation.

The initial CLA did emit a DC-DC converter.

So, it's an 800 volt architecture, which means it doesn't play very nicely

on 400 volts charges of which they are everywhere.

So, Mercedes won't show them on the in-car nav.

And when you navigate to things, it's a curious emission.

Mercedes did say some stuff about, oh no, no, we'll put the DC-DC converter in.

But whether that was for different markets, I'll dig into that.

We also saw the seven seat Mercedes-Benz GLB.

Production is now underway.

So, big battery, 85 kilowatt hours gross, 400 miles WLTP.

Again, 800 volt architecture under this 22 kilowatt AC charging.

You'll either get the rear wheel drive or all wheel drive version of this.

And it's on the MMA platform, shared with the CLA.

Very, very efficient, amazing German engineering on this.

They've really caught up.

You could argue the Chinese still innovate more with charging speeds and things like that.

But there's that big question mark over spending a lot of money on an unknown brand for many people.

And I think if you've owned German Mercedes or premium vehicles before,

maybe you spent some time in a Tesla Model Y or a Model X for a few years

and you're getting out of that and you want to, what's next, what's next?

Go have a look at the Mercedes-Benz GLB, seven seat electric.

Starts at 55,000 euros.

It'll tow 2,000 kilograms.

Not a massive battery, 85 kilowatt hours, but I'll take 400 miles of range.

That's, again, a really impressive vehicle.

We did see at Brussels the Sportback version of the Audi Q6 e-tron.

And I can't think for the life of me whether we've seen that before.

The Audi A6 and the Q6, I just think those are such underrated vehicles

because it uses that premium platform electric that the Porsches are on.

Obviously, it's all Volkswagen Group.

And so the Audi A6 and the Q6, and at Brussels we saw the Q6 Sportback version,

if you don't need the space of the Q6 and you want the efficiency of a Sportback shape,

that 800 volt platform, almost 300 kilowatts DC fast charging.

Let's face it, the kind of charges you're pulling up to,

most of them are going to be limited to that and 656 kilometers of range as well.

Also, the insides of these Audis are absolutely blinking gorgeous.

75,000 euro plus car, but again, you start to get some RS performance in the Audis.

You start to get really high performance vehicles as well.

But for now, this one looks amazing.

We did see the Jeep Wagoneer S and the Jeep Recon.

Those vehicles should come with 100 kilowatt-hour pack.

It's the 400-volt architecture from Stellantis.

So it's not bleeding edge, but that's good.

It should keep the price down, fingers crossed.

Well, I think the US starting price when you get the Wagoneer S Jeep Recon, big question mark,

would be $80,000.

I don't know, it's not confirmed, but the Jeep Recon, again, is that vehicle that just looks wild

and properly off-road, properly rugged.

Jeep's electric move into Europe and North America is all about that adventure positioning.

So off-road authenticity, looking at EVs as a practical tool, not just a fashion statement.

The Wagoneer S has dual motors, 4.5 seconds, 0 to 60.

Recon is, they say, trail rated.

So you've got the locking differential.

I believe they're hardware locking diffs.

I also reported a simulated locking diff.

So look into that.

Important for people who want adventure capability.

European pricing at 65,000 euros will put them in a very premium position,

but they're quite premium vehicles.

Also premium is the Cadillac OPTIQ.

So that turned up at the show.

And that's interesting, 85 kilowatt hour battery pack on this North American car

with big European potential, a bit like the Lucid Gravity, I think, on that.

What else haven't we talked about?

So not really fire-breathing, but Kia were there with the GT versions of the 3, 4, and 5.

All of those, I think, are fantastic vehicles.

All do slightly different things.

Almost too much choice at Kia.

Can't believe I said that.

Get back in your box.

No, there's never such a thing as too much choice.

They've got the 2, 3, 4, 5, all very affordable family cars, all doing slightly different things.

But the GT.

So GT line is a trim spec on Kia, but whereas GT is when they re-engineer it.

A bit like the N version of the Hyundai's, those sister cars.

So they've given it the virtual gear shift, which is a party trick, but it's a really good one.

Different GT drive modes as well.

Active sound design.

They've retuned the chassis, bucket seats, semi-bucket seats.

Some neon interior bits as well.

On the 3, the Kia EV3, 0-60 in like seven seconds.

So as I say, they're not fire-breather.

They're not stupid rip your face off on a wet country road pulling out of a junction.

You know, you can be facing the wrong way if you plant your right foot too hard.

They're not those kind of cars.

So six, seven seconds, 0-60.

Fun and lots of smiles, I imagine, but they're not the three-second EVs that we sometimes see.

Kia does more to democratize performance.

So you get all the performance toys.

Oh, they're all wheel drive, obviously.

And they've got the virtual gear shift and things like that.

If you want that performance feedback, it is all fake trickery, but it is as they do it really, really well.

You won't use it day-to-day, but it's fun.

They're going to be premium pricing on a Kia, which could be slightly problematic, but we will wait and see.

Mazda showed off the CX6E, the Chinese car, but that's what Mazda are doing with their partners in China.

And this is, I think, really good, 78 kilowatt-hour LFP pack.

If this was otherwise another no-name Chinese car, and I say no-name, you and I know who they are,

but for most people they don't.

195 kilowatts peak power, but it's a Mazda.

And you may have bought Mazdas before, and you might think, I'll have another one, but this will be electric.

Smart cockpit design inside, head-up display, pretty good driving dynamics on this by all accounts.

45,000-pound car, 50,000-euro car, and so it is a departure for Mazda that might be doing their own thing

and working with their Chinese partners to bring this in.

So loads of high-tech, 26-inch touchscreen dominates the whole interior environment,

but again, it's what they've got to come with leaning on their Chinese partners.

And so do they need to persuade buyers that they can take a gamble on this?

I don't think buyers need to know that the fact it's a Chinese car with a Mazda badge on.

Or it's part of the Mazda joint venture in China.

So yeah, some really interesting things there.
