I'm Johnny Smith. I'm a reporter. And this is Smith and Sniff, a podcast in which two
friends talk about cars and many other things. Magic trees. You know about magic trees?
Yes. So when I say that, you're going to assume I mean the hanging fragrance that you put
in your car that's the silhouette of a tree. I see. That smells of I don't know cherries or
fake vanilla or I don't know a well-known car wash or whatever. Aren't they often misused because
you're meant to open the little sachet that they're in. Yes. Then you leave it on. You leave
it sheathed for a bit. And you just de-sheath. You gradually de-sheath, don't you? If you de-sheath,
the only time I've ever bought and used a magic tree was I had a Seat Leon long-term test car
from Evo and I foolishly lent it to a colleague at Top Gear who used it on a shoot and ferried
crew around in it and somehow TV crews can effortlessly make cars smell weird. Oh no.
And when I got the car back, it smelled weird. It sort of smelled of wet dog and mud and crisps
and I didn't like it and it was so offensive to me that I on the way home went to a petrol
station and bought a magic tree but then not being familiar with the magic tree system,
I unsheathed it all away immediately and then my car became powerfully, powerfully overwhelmed.
See, a smell of custard cream biscuits because it was a vanilla one. I didn't want anything too
complicated to smell. I went vanilla and it had this incredibly strong, it was like someone had
made a huge custard cream like the size of a double duvet and then slammed your head inside it. It
was so strong. I think the correct unsheathing, gradual unsheathing of a magic tree is akin to
maybe being an accomplished stripper. There's no point in you going out on stage and immediately
pulling pants and trousers or whatever you're wearing to the floor, stepping out of them and
just going tada. That's not going to work. That's not going to work. You have to build up. It's
gradual de-sheath comes into play. It's like, no, guys, let's do this over the course of
of a week or several days. But the same way, I guess a very good erotic dancer knows what pace
to set in order to build the mood. Perhaps if you are an adult dancer and you've used magic
trees extensively, do let us know if it is in fact the case that people of your profession
are the best at using magic trees. Yeah. Do you know, the recent live show that we did off of
Leeds at the Motorist. Great venue. I know we said it before, but great venue. I forgot to admit
to you and also the crowd, the paying crowd that were there, I forgot to admit that I was wearing
something, especially for the occasion that I was going to reveal and I completely forgot to,
then went to bed, woke up, realized I still had it on, then totally forgot to mention it again
the day after when we recorded. So for the purposes of the microphone, I mean, if only we
did this in video form rich like modern people, but for the purposes of ASMR, ASMR, listen to this.
That my friend is a medallion. That I was wearing a medallion on a gold chain
that's new old stock that I got from a vintage shop years ago. And when I moved house, I found
it and realized I bought it for a bit of a laugh and never worn it and then thought, oh, this has
got a bit of Smith and sniff about it. So I'm going to put this on and then I can talk about it on
stage. But because I'm a complain, because I'm a twat, I totally forgot to just one just wore
it under my shirt. But I have to say, I think it gave me a little bit of extra power.
I feel you just say thought it gave me a rash. No, I think that it's the equivalent of maybe
having a kind of stage two talk tune. So you're packing more talk. But just because you've got
more talk doesn't mean say you always have to use it, you just know it's there. So you can tap
into it at any point. So do you want me to describe this because this is a specific medallion. It's
not just a generic, I don't know, some Christopher or coin. It is a solid, probably not real gold
pack of 20 John Plur special cigarettes. I put it on social media. I got this new old stock.
And it is so 1970s, it's unbelievable. And that's why I thought, Oh, I've got to wear this. This is
great. You don't know any of the backstory. Like, did you have to sort of collect tokens?
I don't know. I don't know if it's real. As in, I don't know if it's an official
John player special piece of merch. I genuinely don't know. So yeah, that's, that's what I was
wearing. And I just am a bit annoyed that I never actually, I never actually revealed it.
Do you know what I'll do? I'll wear it another day. All right. I didn't get rash, felt pretty good
about myself. It really is special. Isn't it? Well, John player special. It's absolutely,
it's absolutely special. It's quite a ways to see if, you know, what these might be worth.
No, I haven't. I hope that it's worth. I don't know enough for me to buy another Boxster,
for example. That would be great if I could swap it. I'll straight swap it with a listener for
another Porsche Boxster, especially if it's a bit ghetto. I mean, I've just searched
John player special medallion and nothing is really coming up. What if I chase it to necklace?
It sort of is a necklace, isn't it? No, nothing, still nothing coming up. God,
that you can buy some genuinely quite terrible necklaces though, but not. It was from a vintage
shop and there were a couple of other new old stock medallions and necklaces. This guy obviously
found a horde of them. And some of them were seven inch miniature equivalent of a record,
a seven inch record with the name of an artist on it. So I guess you could pick your favourite
artist and they were really of their time, full disco era. And I nearly got carried away and bought
a whole handful of them, but I restrained myself and just bought the JPS one. So I hope you can be
proud of me for that. I don't know if this is sort of up your street. It's a vintage
Seiko chronograph watch from 1976. But it is a John player special promo version. No.
Now it doesn't, I can't see that it says John player special on it, but it just has a black and
gold face. What? It's quite subtle. It's on American eBay for $910. So it's not cheap,
but in many ways it would complement your necklace. I bloody need to have a look at this,
Richard. Are you still pursuing that citizen Honda prelude watch that you saw the other day?
If anybody can shed more light on that, I'd like to see if I could get my hands on one if they're
not extortionate. I'm getting back into my watch game. There are several of those Honda watches
for sale on Japanese eBay. Right. Last I looked they are about, I think, five or six hundred quid.
Damn. Okay, but can you send me the links and scramble the beat? Scramble the beat. Let's go.
Oh no, I beg your pardon. Sorry. Look, there's one here because they did. Also, I didn't realize
this until I looked on eBay. There's a silver one and a black one as in the case and bracelet
of those colors. These look like brand new ones as well. £314.61p. Oh my gosh. Send it over now,
you whore. All right. Here, get your eyes around that. But it's in Japan. I don't know if you
don't have to pay tax. Okay, I'll click and collect, Richard. It's fine. Click and collect from
Tokyo. I don't know if anybody's done that. Citizens do make that watch without the Honda
branding, but I guess you want the Honda branding because you've got a Honda. I feel like I,
yeah, I want it to be Honda-ish if that's okay. And it does say prelude on the back as well. It's
prelude in the same tough face as the badge. Okay, Rich. Let's have a free form ideas session
and remember, guys, in these sessions, there are no such things as bad ideas. What if I tried to
eat a wasp? There are some bad ideas, but in this case, it's really simple. I'm going to outline a
concept and I want you to say the first word that comes to mind. Okay. Extremely long-lasting domestic
feline pet. Dura cat. Apartment on Scottish Island, northeast of Islay. Dura flat. High quality,
interlocking floor tiles that are extremely easy to install and smarten up the appearance of your
garage or shed whilst providing a nicer surface on which to work on your vehicle and which our
listeners can buy with 10% off by visiting duramat.co.uk and using the code SSG10 at checkout.
Oh, duramat. Duramat. Duramat. Good. Now tell me more about this durable cat.
So, you know, last week we talked about Beckham's prelude, yeah? Yes. And we did actually have a
letter from somebody mentioning that this had been discussed on a TV documentary about Man United.
Oh, yes. And I probably can't find the story. That was, it's on an email. I'll see if I can find it
got reminded about was the fact that, you know, I might have told you, I've got a Matra Rancho,
Talbot Matra Rancho project and lots of listeners of Smith and Sniff seem to hail from the Netherlands.
Yeah. And some of them come to the live show because they're so committed. They come over to
the UK. So thanks guys. That's really good. Well, they said, well, you know that there was a rancho
that was extensively used in a children's kind of sleuth series called Basien Adrian.
This has been mentioned before, hasn't it? Yeah. This was the, yeah, a popular kid's show in the
Netherlands. That's right. But it seems there's another connection to this clown and man
the Dutch sleuth series. And are you going to love this? So they used to have a,
they used to have a Matra Rancho when they first started the series. The series started in I think
70, 78. So not long after the Rancho was launched and it went on to 1996. But when the Rancho got
a bit long in the tooth, guess what they changed it for? Not a lude. A fricking honda prelude.
Can you believe it? A chap called Rick, who got in touch with us called Rick Wileymaker or
Velymaker. And I'm trying to bring up his email now, but he sent us a letter and I could not
believe it. He said, yeah, they actually changed it to a honda prelude. Like no way.
It's a shame the show is no longer in production because if they were fully tracking cars that
we slightly obsess over on this show, where would they go next? Maybe a Julia Quadrifoglio?
Oh yeah, they would. Because you know why? Because they've probably made a bit of money.
Yeah, they've made a bit of money over the years and they're like, look, the prelude was quite good,
but we just need a little bit more refinement now and want to be a little bit more suave.
And yes, yes, he's still a clown, but he's a swarmy clown.
I found the email about Beckham's prelude, which is from a listener called Ewan, who is in New
Zealand. And he says, in response to your search for David Beckham's prelude, the car was covered
in 2013's Manchester United documentary, The Class of 92. His United teammates explained that
David paid extra for a leather interior in his lewd while they were happy with cloth to demonstrate
how he aspired to the finer things in life early in his career. David then reveals that the car
was stolen, so sadly it might no longer exist. Oh, well, Ewan, thank you for that. I remember
reading that going, that's cool info. Somebody else, now this was possibly in the comments on
YouTube said something similar in as much as Beckham's prelude was
conspicuously nicer than his teammates cars. And that's why I got the aftermarket alloys on it.
Oh, he wanted to stand out because even then he wanted to be, you know, extra special, just
a bit special. And he changed the loys on his prelude. And I think he told us this,
I'm sorry, I won't be able to find it, short notice, said that Alex Ferguson went nuts at him.
What for putting aftermarket wheels on? Well, Ferguson was famously a very strict manager,
and he didn't like his players having flash cars and spending their money on frivolous things.
He wanted them to just focus on football. So I could understand it, knowing what little I know
about Alex Ferguson and his management style, that yeah, I guess he would perceive it that
Beckham could have been at home thinking about different strategies in football, but instead
he was browsing a demon tweaks catalog. And that's a waste of time and focus in the mind, I guess.
Well, so going back to Bassie and Adrienne, the popular TV show,
