I've got my own Porsche ways.
My car got recovered back since the last time
we spoke about the gearbox being fixed.
Oh, it's not broken again.
This is the Porsche, not the AMI.
No, it's not,
it's not broken as in like,
needs to be fixed.
It's more than it needs to be tuned up
so it runs correctly.
I drove it about 45 minutes out of London,
out of town on a lovely sunny day a few weeks back
between the last time we did a podcast,
and it just,
it just started running a bit rough,
it pulled over,
it didn't sound healthy,
and I thought, you know what,
the last time I pushed through a bit of bad noise,
I blew up the engine,
so this time I'm going to get recovered back,
and I'm not going to blow up the engine,
and instead I'm going to get it back,
and I drove into the car park,
and it's been there ever since,
but it just, I think it needs some,
a tune up is what they call it in the classic car world,
it needs a tune up,
because the car,
so when it started doing that,
what were the thought processes in you,
because I can imagine you probably
started to feel quite sick,
when you thought, oh no, it's going to break again.
I did consider it,
because I was actually on a dual carriageway,
I thought maybe if I went into the central reservation,
I could get a pay up from the insurance,
and it would all be over,
but instead I got off the mate's way,
and I parked up
safely out of the way,
and it lives to fight another day.
That's extreme moves.
You've got a new engine, essentially,
and a new gearbox,
and you're telling me that the car needs a tune up.
Yeah, well,
every year you get a service,
and this car,
after a certain amount of miles,
and this car's done, you know.
How many miles has the engine done since it was rebuilt?
Like 300 miles.
And do you think they tuned the engine,
do you think they set the engine up
and tuned it when they built it, maybe?
Yeah, it has had
long periods of
lack of use, though, hasn't it?
That's the biggest problem with the classic,
because you can't just jump the battery and start,
and it runs. Unfortunately, with the whole gearbox thing,
that kind of took the car out of service
for six or seven months,
but one day I'll have a positive story about it.
It's unfortunately not today, and not this podcast.
There's probably like a squirrel
living in one of the cylinders or something
that's moved in, because it hadn't been used
for such a long time.
But at least it makes a change,
just not bitching about your AMI.
No, it's the AMI Live.
The AMI's been brilliant. Yeah, the AMI's been great.
I have no complaints about the AMI.
Everything got sorted, as we already know.
And yeah, use it all the time,
through London, outside of the other side.
No congestion charge, it's perfect.
And tell us about, it's got a new rubber.
It does, yes.
So Michelin very kindly sent me
a set of Michelin Cross Climate Plus tyres,
which is the only tyre
in the Michelin range that fits
the AMI's very specific
and small tyre size.
And yeah, they made a world of difference.
They're lovely. For me at least it means...

The equivalent, just on the other end of the spectrum.
So rather than being track focused
in the car that can't go on track,
these are winter focus for a car
that will never see anything other than a bit of rain.
But yeah, they're definitely better than
whatever came on it, that's the main thing.
So they make Cross Climate tyres
for wheel barrows then, do they?

I angled for a long time to get a set of
Twil, which you two will know lots about
for the internet, maybe not as much.
For anybody, you should google what a Twil is.
Turns out they don't make it
in the fit and the size for an AMI.
But I was angling for a while, I was like,
I want a set of Twils on the AMI.
That would be cool then.
Hey, before we get

not that we ever have an agenda,
the last time we were together
was at Joe and Lou's wedding.
And I just wanted to say
what a joyous day
that was.
And it was just
amazing to see Joe cry so much.
And it was
probably because he had this amazing
Z8 outside, I wasn't allowed to drive it a lot.
You had to be inside getting married
and being with friends and stuff
instead of driving the car.
But it was amazing, mate.
How was the honeymoon?
Firstly, thank you very much

to both of you and your respected
amazing partners for coming along
because it was such a special day.
I know weddings should be special days.
You never know how they're going to turn out.

until you're panicking until the last moment.
Lou put so much work
into organising everything.
And then the day arrives
and it went
better than both of us could have expected.

it feels like about six months ago.

into Porsches needing tune ups
into Porsches leaving Le Mans
and the work series.
They've jumped out
of that race series
to save money apparently.

So they've
not long kind of announced
that they're peddling back on their electrification plans
and they're going to carry on
making internal combustion engines a bit longer.
Yeah at the same time
like a week later they announced
that they're pulling out of WEC
but staying in Formula E.
Yeah.
It's probably just like
what contract was more
solid right? Like which contract
do you think are better or easier?
I can imagine sir.
Yeah, staying in America.
I can imagine Formula E
is a lot cheaper than
WEC.
I can imagine. I don't know.
So I'm going to be
EV. The only thing I can think
about with the Formula E thing
is I know having spoken to lots of manufacturers
that are in Formula E
a lot of the kind of
the EV road car programs
of all the motorsports
that is the one that you can literally
take the technology that's running
in the race car and translate
it into your road car program. Because in all the
Formula E cars, although they're the same chassis
basically the motor
the battery pack
the battery management systems
all of its proprietary traction control systems
everything.
So they'll use it as a test bed.
So I guess they're still
going to have to do EV
they might not want to do it as much
but they still have to do it. So maybe that's why
I don't know.
I wouldn't discredit
the financial implications
on the other side too that potentially
the Formula E team is better funded
by sponsors and so Porsche
if you look at a balance sheet you have to put
less of their own money in. Whereas maybe
WEC and I don't know so I'm speaking out
term but maybe with WEC
they have to put more of their own money in.
Maybe WEC is better
to a cheaper but less of
it's payable by partners.
It's so sad though because hypercar class
it's just over the last couple of years
all of these new cars coming in
it's just
such a great category
of motor racing.
And Porsche have come so close to winning
they've been so close to winning
and we know
they would have won next year
they would have definitely won
but it's really sad it's heart breaking
I mean I was gutted when everyone
pulled out what close to 10 years ago
when Audi and Porsche
pulled out of the LMP1
category as it was then.
But you look back on those times and you're like
well it's Toyota
versus Porsche versus Audi
who are the same parent group so
and those LMP1s
that you know I don't know what the numbers
were but I just know that they were
on a completely different stratosphere in terms
of budgets.
But the hypercar class
I mean
we've all been to Le Mans recently
you've been many years recently
and it's just such a
massive thing
such an incredible
showcase isn't it.
So it is sad, it is really sad to read that
because
that does not
to me that's a bit of an open
book as to yet we are

trouble. We know they are

apply to them and they'll do it for you

it's going to cost the industry
billions and there's another thing
that's going to mess them up a bit
but yeah
it's £8.2 billion

you know when you go and you create a studio
and when you've got a video like that flying
and you just can't believe the numbers
the day it went live at half
eight in the morning and I think it was playing Paddle

my studio just before it went on court
Paddle and it had done 20,000 views
I played Paddle for an hour and a half
and when it got off court it had done 50,000 views

and cost so they're
actually trying to create
an entirely new class
of car in the EU is it Ursula
van der Ryan in the EU's is trying
to do it and so that they can just
make it as it is
brilliant yeah just really really clever
briefly though you mentioned
systems on cars and I in my head I was
like yeah the AMI it has no systems but
brand new and that brings me into
a small anecdote about cars like that
that the AMI the other day
my flatmate brought it back with
zero miles of range and he parked up
and said oh I need to charge it later
and I needed to go out so I was like
don't worry I'll go charge it so I get in it
it's flashing it's got like a battery
warning light I was like oh my god
this thing's going to be in limp home mode
it's got zero range right and the range
is only 46 miles to begin with
in theory
no restrictions there's no
electronic limp mode
snail mode nothing there's no
restrictions as to how
it manages
it's zero range
status whereas if you've ever driven
any electric car you get
you get to start like 5-10 miles it's going to start going into like a snail mode
there's a little turtle on the display

thing they were saying that the Datcha Spring
which is their only EV at the moment
is a fully connected car
and what they've done with that since it's been
live and we've only had it in the UK
for like a year but it's been out
for about four years in Europe
is they've basically
collected all of the journey
data off of that car
since it launched and then they've obviously
kind of taken
all the user names and stuff off it
so it's a generic data
but the average journey
distance for a Datcha Spring
is like 23 miles
wow
and so
they're like what doesn't need
I mean it'll do 200 kilometres it doesn't need
to do any more than that so 23 miles
a day is the average distance
a Datcha Spring currently does

Datcha couldn't win the

so Seblo won the rally

I wanted to ask you about that
Turbo 50
for those of you who don't know

but firstly I've never driven
992 Turbo S
or Turbo for that matter
and I think the Turbo 50
years
I think that's what it's called
it's basically the end
to celebrate 50 years of Turbo
and it was the last run out
versions right but it's essentially
under the skin it's just a Turbo S
just a sticker pack
in an interior
so talking about it
as a Turbo S
I mean
I've seen it win every car world
drag race I've seen the figures on paper
I've seen people talking about it
blah blah blah
it's going to be fast
and then you drive it
and it's just
unbelievably
fast
it's literally
I was actually
Marino Franchetti
messaged me this morning
about it because I've done a post yesterday
and he said
that's a bit of a flex
you can't just drop that on us that's not okay
no
it's great
we talk about cars a lot on Instagram
but he said to me
what's it like
is it just fast
does it have soul
is it going to get you in trouble quickly
and I won't repeat
what I said to him
but it is an absolute
time machine
it's the fastest thing I've driven by a country
Mar and my M5
is a fast car
right but getting into that
turbo
it's a jail-baked car
and I think as an older guy
now
and especially what I went through in say 2018
with the R8 speeding stuff
I like to think of myself
as a sensible driver
on the road yes I've pushed cars
but within my limits
and I definitely never
take absolute
liberties with speed limits and stuff
but this car
you can't
it's
you've got to be so careful with it
in any gear
you breathe on it
I can't even explain it
really it is so fast
it's an absolute rocket ship
to put it into context for me
I have three
and I guess maybe we should explain as well
the way that Porsche do press cars
it's often
logistically easier
if you book a couple one after another
because you can just swap them over
and you get some content back
so I had GT3RS
I swapped that out for the 992.2
GTS
so the difference between those two cars
the GT3RS nearly broke me
it's just such a harsh
on it concentration car
but it's very very fast
you get in a
GTST hybrid
and that's faster than a GT3RS
on the road in a straight line
like by some stretch
that thing was just
unbelievable
but it's only two wheel drive
but it's still sub three seconds to 60
and it's unbelievably fast
and you think oh my god
and we traced it and I drove it for a long weekend
and she loved the car and drove it quite a bit
and I was like that's unbelievable
drop that back
and two days later pick up the Turbo S
to take to your wedding
and I'm driving back from Reading
and I was like oh my god
this makes the
GTST hybrid look slow
yep
but the scary thing
is that's the outgoing
Turbo S
the 992.2
Turbo S
the two Turbos
off of the
the GTST only got one Turbo
it's going to have two of them and like was it
700 and something horsepower
what's that going to be like
someone got in that Turbo S
and went yeah it's not fast enough
this will make it faster
yeah
I know
you talk about how fast
3RS is and Joe we obviously experienced that
around Spa and obviously on the straights
and stuff even the base 911
you were like there's a bit of parity
in kind of top speed here
but across a lap
let's use Silverstone
as an example track
across a lap like do you think the Turbo
and the 3RS are kind of giving almost
equal lap times
given how much faster that can
you know the second you're out onto a straight
it's got to be catching up the 3RS
right so
it's the difference even that much
it's just a different style of driving right
it's where the speed comes
it's crossed my mind exactly that
and I was like wow if I could somehow
make that video happen
or idea because
I remember when we went to Spa and I took
James and Michelin out and the 3RS
and you know he was like
this thing is so fast you know
but the first thing I thought about the 3RS
when you're out on track is actually
it's not very fast in the straight line at all
like to me it felt
yeah to me it didn't feel anywhere near
fast enough for how well it handled
especially it's far down the
only got 500 horsepower
it makes
a great sound which helps make it
feel fast but actually
because it's a lot of theatre yeah there's a lot of
theatre but because it's so
composed and so planted it actually
doesn't feel that fast
in a straight line at all
so but and the
Turbo RS is completely the other way
and I think I would
love to see I think
somewhere like Spa 3RS would still be
faster just because it would be
so much quicker through the really fast stuff
where the Turbo just couldn't do those speeds
because of lack of aero but I think
somewhere like
Bedford that's a bit that it's got
much slower corners and hairpins
where the aero would be much less beneficial
and it's got that long back
straight where the Turbo
S would put in so much time
into the 3RS it would be
really interesting because like again
it would be a video that would do about 12 views
if I shot it
it would cost Michelin
a load of money and it would get absolutely no
views but I think yeah it would be a really
interesting layover because
there would be two totally different cars but
if I had to choose one car
on a closed road section
point to point I would
have to say that the Turbo S
on a public road if it was
closed and it was legal
would be faster
you need to take one to the Isle of Man
oh my god
Jesus Christ
no Joe that would be bad
you would end up in Ireland if you
crashed in the Isle of Man
if you missed the corner
you would literally just jump and land
in Ireland somewhere
it would be going that fast
I've always loved the styling of a Turbo S
and when I was looking at
getting my Nilem I did think
oh Turbo S Cabriolet
that would be cool or a Turbo
the big problem is when you look at them used
they've always got a lot of miles on
and having spent a week in that one I understand
why now because it's the kind of 911
you just want to drive it all the time
because it's a lovely cruiser
it's super comfortable but then when you get to
a bit of B road it's like unbelievable
talking about unbelievable
while we're talking about 911s
can we just have a shout out
to Layton
Clark for our track pace
so I did a track day
with Michelin last week
at Donington Park
and as part of that
day I was in the Michelin
911 I did this really innovative
unique video Joe
you'd like the concept
Pilot Sport 4S vs Cup 2
it was brilliant
no one had ever done that before
as part of that
two cool things on the track day
one I got to drive
Darin from RPM Technics
991 GT3 RS
Mantai Racing
which was amazing
but Layton took me out in his 992
GT3 RS
I just
I can't even begin to describe
how late that guy breaks

do you remember when we went to the Nurburgring
and we had the experience in the GT3
and it recalibrated what we thought was possible
in a car that could also have
number plates
do you think it maybe recalibrated you again
oh it was like that guy had the handbrake on
honestly

he was on Cup 2 Rs
and we went down Crainer
I just can't even begin to tell you
how fast he went down Crainer curves
and then at the end we were chatting
and he went these Cup 2 Rs
they've done like four track days
they're knackered they're literally there's nothing left of them
he said if they were fresh
Redgate and Crainer curves
in his GT3 RS is flat

that's just like
oh the guy
I mean
I mean that's why RMA and I know
they're partners of Michelin
and we both experienced track days
with them we both know Layton
we all know Layton very well
and
honestly I think that's what makes those days so good
is Layton
he does such a great job but
the event itself is great
the other cars and the people there are awesome
but it's the fact that
really at the bottom of it
his old man as well that's where it all started
but you look at Layton
and he's such a competent driver
I mean he raced for years
he holds a lot of unofficial
lap records around the UK
I think at Donington Park and his 3 RS
and
I've not actually been
in the car with him because we ran out of time
filming that video they've got no views out as far
but
I've seen his laps on
on socials and obviously
I've also tried to follow
I was going to say if you're
not sure about who we're talking about go and find
our box and gas
episode from this year because we walk around
Layton's car and chat to Layton
and that's the car we're talking about going out in
but honestly
for me
my summary of the GT3 RS was
it's too much car for me
I couldn't exploit that car
and really get my money's worth
I'd be better off with just a standard GT3
Layton's the kind of guy
who can exploit every inch
of that car it was unbelievable
absolutely unbelievable
so yeah
yeah must work harder to be a
better driver was my
my conclusion from that track
though
yeah

the most interesting one here is

at least even for the passenger seat
the 3RS is a joke
it feels like you're on rails like it doesn't feel like
what you're doing should be possible

maybe even like a even a Silverstone
I think might be a quite a good one right
there's a lot of long straights
you need something with some straights

that like Maggots and Beckett all those
it's all fast there's a lot of fast
stuff so I think the 3RS would come alive
