Hey guys, welcome back to the Drive Talk podcast.

I just thought I'd get in there before you two started ripping me again.

I tell you what you're talking about.

We never do that.

I think that's where we,

I know, I know.

And we still do it in our older age.

Friendship group bullying, that's what it is.

Joe, you're never mean to me though,

so what does that mean?

Oh, I am sometimes,

but not, yeah, not to your face.

You don't provide the ammunition that I do.

Wait, you know, there's way more.

Oh, don't worry.

I've got my own Porsche ways.

My car got recovered back since the last time

we spoke about the gearbox being fixed.

Oh, it's not broken again.

This is the Porsche, not the AMI.

No, it's not,

it's not broken as in like,

needs to be fixed.

It's more than it needs to be tuned up

so it runs correctly.

I drove it about 45 minutes out of London,

out of town on a lovely sunny day a few weeks back

between the last time we did a podcast,

and it just,

it just started running a bit rough,

it pulled over,

it didn't sound healthy,

and I thought, you know what,

the last time I pushed through a bit of bad noise,

I blew up the engine,

so this time I'm going to get recovered back,

and I'm not going to blow up the engine,

and instead I'm going to get it back,

and I drove into the car park,

and it's been there ever since,

but it just, I think it needs some,

a tune up is what they call it in the classic car world,

it needs a tune up,

because the car,

so when it started doing that,

what were the thought processes in you,

because I can imagine you probably

started to feel quite sick,

when you thought, oh no, it's going to break again.

I did consider it,

because I was actually on a dual carriageway,

I thought maybe if I went into the central reservation,

I could get a pay up from the insurance,

and it would all be over,

but instead I got off the mate's way,

and I parked up

safely out of the way,

and it lives to fight another day.

That's extreme moves.

You've got a new engine, essentially,

and a new gearbox,

and you're telling me that the car needs a tune up.

Yeah, well,

every year you get a service,

and this car,

after a certain amount of miles,

and this car's done, you know.

How many miles has the engine done since it was rebuilt?

Like 300 miles.

And do you think they tuned the engine,

do you think they set the engine up

and tuned it when they built it, maybe?

Yeah, it has had

long periods of

lack of use, though, hasn't it?

That's the biggest problem with the classic,

because you can't just jump the battery and start,

and it runs. Unfortunately, with the whole gearbox thing,

that kind of took the car out of service

for six or seven months,

but one day I'll have a positive story about it.

It's unfortunately not today, and not this podcast.

There's probably like a squirrel

living in one of the cylinders or something

that's moved in, because it hadn't been used

for such a long time.

But at least it makes a change,

just not bitching about your AMI.

No, it's the AMI Live.

The AMI's been brilliant. Yeah, the AMI's been great.

I have no complaints about the AMI.

Everything got sorted, as we already know.

And yeah, use it all the time,

through London, outside of the other side.

No congestion charge, it's perfect.

And tell us about, it's got a new rubber.

It does, yes.

So Michelin very kindly sent me

a set of Michelin Cross Climate Plus tyres,

which is the only tyre

in the Michelin range that fits

the AMI's very specific

and small tyre size.

And yeah, they made a world of difference.

They're lovely. For me at least it means...

Did you say Cup 2Rs, sorry?

No, Cross Climate.

Oh, I thought you said Cup 2R.

Yeah.

The equivalent, just on the other end of the spectrum.

So rather than being track focused

in the car that can't go on track,

these are winter focus for a car

that will never see anything other than a bit of rain.

But yeah, they're definitely better than

whatever came on it, that's the main thing.

So they make Cross Climate tyres

for wheel barrows then, do they?

Yeah, do you know what?

I angled for a long time to get a set of

Twil, which you two will know lots about

for the internet, maybe not as much.

For anybody, you should google what a Twil is.

Turns out they don't make it

in the fit and the size for an AMI.

But I was angling for a while, I was like,

I want a set of Twils on the AMI.

That would be cool then.

Hey, before we get

stuck into the agenda,

not that we ever have an agenda,

the last time we were together

was at Joe and Lou's wedding.

And I just wanted to say

what a joyous day

that was.

And it was just

amazing to see Joe cry so much.

And it was

probably because he had this amazing

Z8 outside, I wasn't allowed to drive it a lot.

You had to be inside getting married

and being with friends and stuff

instead of driving the car.

But it was amazing, mate.

How was the honeymoon?

Firstly, thank you very much

and

to both of you and your respected

amazing partners for coming along

because it was such a special day.

I know weddings should be special days.

You never know how they're going to turn out.

You never know

until you're panicking until the last moment.

Lou put so much work

into organising everything.

And then the day arrives

and it went

better than both of us could have expected.

And a lot of that has to do

with the wonderful people that turned up

on the day, friends and family.

And

quick shout out as you mentioned the Z8.

special start to the wedding

for me and my brother.

The honeymoon was great.

We went to the south of Portugal

just near Lagos

for a week.

It was exactly what we needed.

It was a week of

basically doing nothing but sunbathing,

walking and eating

and a bit of drinking.

It was brilliant.

We both came back super relaxed

and even though that was

what two weeks ago or something

it feels like about six months ago.

So

it was great.

We also need to give a big shout out

I didn't know one of these existed.

It was first explained to me as an Audi

but Joey maybe you can give a bit more detail

on exactly what that was

if you probably know more than me.

before Audi,

I'm sure a lot of people would know this

before Audi it was

Auto Union, right?

It was the mother

or sort of the older company

that preceded it.

She turned up

in the 1930s

or was it 20s?

No, I think so.

34, that's right.

It was called a Wanderer

and I didn't

know that there was such a car

but it was absolutely

stunning, black and red

and just

beautiful. It was running

perfect. It's one of

Audi's heritage cars

that they have in their heritage fleets.

We all know they've got Audi Quattros

and

RS2s and stuff that

we're all very familiar with

but that is like, you know, it's going back

in time. It's

approaching 100 years old

but what a car.

Definitely, well I don't know if it trumped

the Z8 but it was definitely

very beautiful

and very elegant and I got

to ride in the back of it for about 200 meters

which was cool.

Because it wasn't road legal, is it?

No.

You could only drive it on private land.

Yeah, exactly.

It was peak, it was like

BMW boy marries

Audi girl.

It just like, couldn't have been better.

Couldn't have been better.

The car part was brilliant because then

ironically

you had the beautiful

Turbo 50th

anniversary

Porsche which I've now actually got

parked outside the house.

I thought it was a bit slow though.

Turbo 50 and just how slow it is.

And it was cool because there were some

really lovely people I haven't seen for ages

It was really weird meeting your brother

because I've never met him before

but I felt like I knew him really well

because of all the times I've seen him

on your channel.

I literally went and said

I don't think we've ever met

but you went, no we haven't.

I feel like we have.

because I know he watches your content.

So where are we going to start?

Yeah go on. I'll do a lovely segue

into Porsches needing tune ups

into Porsches leaving Le Mans

and the work series.

They've jumped out

of that race series

to save money apparently.

Say it right.

It's a question.

Okay.

So they've

not long kind of announced

that they're peddling back on their electrification plans

and they're going to carry on

making internal combustion engines a bit longer.

Yeah at the same time

like a week later they announced

that they're pulling out of WEC

but staying in Formula E.

Yeah.

It's probably just like

what contract was more

solid right? Like which contract

do you think are better or easier?

I can imagine sir.

Yeah, staying in America.

I can imagine Formula E

is a lot cheaper than

WEC.

I can imagine. I don't know.

So I'm going to be

EV. The only thing I can think

about with the Formula E thing

is I know having spoken to lots of manufacturers

that are in Formula E

a lot of the kind of

the EV road car programs

of all the motorsports

that is the one that you can literally

take the technology that's running

in the race car and translate

it into your road car program. Because in all the

Formula E cars, although they're the same chassis

basically the motor

the battery pack

the battery management systems

all of its proprietary traction control systems

everything.

So they'll use it as a test bed.

So I guess they're still

going to have to do EV

they might not want to do it as much

but they still have to do it. So maybe that's why

I don't know.

I wouldn't discredit

the financial implications

on the other side too that potentially

the Formula E team is better funded

by sponsors and so Porsche

if you look at a balance sheet you have to put

less of their own money in. Whereas maybe

WEC and I don't know so I'm speaking out

term but maybe with WEC

they have to put more of their own money in.

Maybe WEC is better

to a cheaper but less of

it's payable by partners.

It's so sad though because hypercar class

it's just over the last couple of years

all of these new cars coming in

it's just

such a great category

of motor racing.

And Porsche have come so close to winning

they've been so close to winning

and we know

they would have won next year

they would have definitely won

but it's really sad it's heart breaking

I mean I was gutted when everyone

pulled out what close to 10 years ago

when Audi and Porsche

pulled out of the LMP1

category as it was then.

But you look back on those times and you're like

well it's Toyota

versus Porsche versus Audi

who are the same parent group so

and those LMP1s

that you know I don't know what the numbers

were but I just know that they were

on a completely different stratosphere in terms

of budgets.

But the hypercar class

I mean

we've all been to Le Mans recently

you've been many years recently

and it's just such a

massive thing

such an incredible

showcase isn't it.

So it is sad, it is really sad to read that

because

that does not

to me that's a bit of an open

book as to yet we are

in a bit of financial

trouble. We know they are

but that is like

desperate times

so fingers crossed that

I don't know it doesn't get too much

worse. I think the worry is

I don't think there's a manufacturer out there

that isn't having

daily meetings with their account team and going

how are we going to manage because

I think it's just really challenging

situation whether that's

tariffs or ZV mandate

or the cost of materials

or

just general economy

meaning people aren't making

and I guess for Porsche

purchases are

they're not your everyday car

are they there that

what's the word I'm looking for

discretionary purchase

you don't even have to do it

No, not everyone's got a crayon crew

now this is one hell

of a jump here but talking of discretionary

are we going to talk

about the looks like the

finalization of the compensation scheme

for the motor finance scandal

they do seem to have seemingly

locked in

the arrangements there

around a really interesting

I've got a few people

send me a thing that

the financial conduct authority

were reaching out to influencers

to do ad campaigns

for the fact that you don't need

to go to some ambulance chasing lawyer

you just need to kind of

apply to them and they'll do it for you

so yeah I'm going to guess

it's going to cost the industry

billions and there's another thing

that's going to mess them up a bit

but yeah

it's £8.2 billion

£8.2 billion

with each claimant expected to get around

£700

so there's 14.2 million

agreements

44 of which have been made

since 2007 and yeah

it will be anybody that's had a discretionary

commission arrangement where the

high commission is

where the commission is equal to or greater than 35%

of the total cost of credit

and 10% of the loan

so yeah

they estimate that 85% of eligible

customers would take part in the scheme

which mean the estimated redress

so the amount owed back to the

customers is £8.2 billion

and is that

is that going to hit finance companies

or manufacturers

probably finance companies more

I don't know how close

so anyway

that was my question

or yeah

the finance companies that are part of

you know let's say

what's the VW one

VW finance

yeah

but no

how closely aligned is that with

Volkswagen cars

are they financially linked together

I don't know

but that's yet another thing

that's going to mess them up

yeah

I mean they probably need to claw back lots of money

for all of the payments that they made

to influencers

to advertise it before

do you think any of us

I'm trying to think I've only had one

well apart from the AMI which doesn't count

I've only had one PCP finance car

on an

agreement that I don't remember

if it has discretionary

payment

I mean Joe's the one

he's going to have loads

he's had finance cars since the beginning of time

I've had

several in that area

and I've had lots of text messages come through

actually in the last week

saying that I'm owed this much

call this number so I'm like

do I call the number

so it's between 2007 and 2024

Joe how many finance cars have you had

back to all my chauffeuring cars and stuff

I mean I could be owed

M3 with like big wide archers on it

I think the two cool things that they brought back because it has

seemed to have gone and I think all of the brands

a kind of a mafia car or a gangster car

from like the 20s but everybody has seemingly

gone back a bit in time right

even the Audi looks like old Audi

rather than current Audi

but the Noia classer has

like really nice

I like fabric seats in a car rather than

leather that goes maybe glossy over time

it's got really nice fabric seats

it's got a low window line

which I never thought I'd ever see ever again

because of safety regulations

it looks like all the kind of quirks and features

that still the Doug DeMiro

phrase that you used to like in your classics

are available but not in right hand drive markets

so like when I was in Munich last week

I saw a new 5 series

540d

which would be an amazing car

yeah what vehicle that would be

we can't get them over here

so

I think

it's a sad time

for the big beautiful straight 6 diesels

but

like what pens just driven

you can still get that straight 6 petrol

which is very torquey

and when you pair that up to the hybrid

running gear

which is basically the same hybrid that I have in my M5

it all comes together

very well and

yeah it feels

mighty

so it got delivered on a truck

like all BMW's do and when they backed it off the truck

I'm like

at the first glance I thought

sure that's an X5 because it just didn't look that big

yeah

X5's used to be

giganormous compared to everything else

but because everything on the road

got so big

an X5 now doesn't actually look that big

I mean it is big it's like 5 meters long

and

it didn't look that big

I thought they'd give me like an X3 or something

yeah yeah very sure

because the new X3 looks

arguably bigger than it because it's

much square and boxier

and uglier

but I didn't

know what to expect but it was a good car

not as good as that hand shelter though

that was lovely

oh yeah that's a special car

oh here's a question for you

because I've had it lots on my comments of that video

yeah

lots of people said

that they thought the hand shelter package was only available

in the green over tan

but the one I had was red

so I'm presuming

you can get it in other colours now

well I thought it was also only

available in green over tan

and actually

when I was speaking to a lovely Martin from

the UK at an event a couple of months ago

he said oh

I've got a new hand shelter on the

on the fleet and I was like oh cool

and then he said it was red

is it Melbourne red? I can't remember what red it was

San Francisco metallic

yeah

so that was the first I knew of it

being available in different colours so

whether they've done that recently

or whether that's always been the case

but yeah I thought it was only green over tan

but

what a lovely

a lovely package and I think

you as a boxer man

well I mean who isn't a boxer man

if you're being honest and you've driven one

they're incredible sports cars

and you're a hairdresser

yeah yeah of course and it's not a real Porsche

and all the rest of it

but I think

although

although they feel

the same place in the market

they don't stand on each other's toes

at all because they're both such

different

it's hard to explain they are the same

package but they're so different packages

yeah

here's a question then for

you and everyone that's listening

why didn't

BMW sell more of them because it's

a brilliant car to drive

they look lovely

they've got that one

I mean it's like the peak BMW interior

because it's still got buttons and it's not got

overwhelming screens everywhere

and

I mean

in a world where

you can buy a £100,000 Volvo

a £65 grand or whatever it was

I thought it was really well priced

I just don't

I couldn't understand it really

how much is a

boxer if that's

a 65 what's a boxer

the boxer gts

when they went out what were they 85 or something

yeah the four litre one was yeah

because you'd have to compare it with the

gts because

because this is a top spec car also

so it's not

I mean you can go for a lower version

z4 for sure

but the top spec one

with 300 and whatever it was

35 brake it was just

brilliant car

and I really enjoyed my time in it

and it wasn't like

they didn't just sell in the UK

you just don't see them really

anywhere

I'd love to know how many BMW sold

what they're like annual sales

because I can't imagine it's a big number

though why they haven't sold that many

and it really must come down to the

boxer at the end of the day

and I think it makes

how about some hands free

devices in your car

that was actually quite good

and although we talk about it

or you've got the Landonaurus one

I just want to say a big shout out

to these guys because they send Ped and I stuff

I've used them for years

they're an Australian brand

I actually went to see them when I was in Melbourne

a couple of years ago

and they make

in my opinion

they make

the best phone cases

and mounts

and this is not a paid thing

but they've just brought out this new one

that I know Ped uses as well

the windscreen suction mount

and it is absolutely brilliant

I've used it in so many cars

it's so good

they make action cam mounts

they make everything

I think it was about then

I actually owned

the first iPhone

and I ran it for years

and I really liked it

I remember I was living in India

and I had a new iPhone

out there

not many people had them

at the time especially in India

it was a great bit of kit

and then I think

2008 or 2009 I went on to Android

and since then I've been an Android guy

through and through

and I've been running Google pixels

for the past

probably 7 years

or something, 7 or 8 years now

and I love the pixel

and

then I started getting help from Google

which was great

but then they decided that I

didn't tick enough boxes for them

and I wasn't

their target customer anymore

so

you were too old

probably because I was too old

so I decided at that time

not because I was jaded about that

but I thought you know what

and right at that time

Apple had launched the iPhone 17

or they were about to

and I'd watched the brilliant Marcus

Brownlee's reviews

I'm obsessed with his tech reviews

I've watched all of them

even stuff and tech that he's reviewing that I don't care about

he's brilliant though isn't he

he's so amazing

so I watched

and he basically said that new pixel 10

was nothing groundbreaking

and the iPhone 17 was really good

and whatever I thought you know what

to go back and try Apple

because I've run a MacBook Pro

for many many years

and I got an iPhone 17 Pro

500 gigs

it was about 1400 pounds

and I thought

I'll give it a go

I find the iPhone

actually interestingly before you go on Joe

I was the person that introduced you to pixel in the first place

if I remember

I had a pixel phone

I was a Samsung guy

and the pixels had the time

definitely even against iPhone

and that's where I went to them as well

because I had an iPhone 6

or something before

and the pixel phone came out

the pixel 2 it was

and the camera was way better

it had way better photos

and so I kind of always got led around by the cameras

but no iPhone I've got a 16 Pro now

the camera quality stills or video

was amazing

and I think what Google

and I think Android in general

but especially the Google Pixel

the actual lens quality in the camera

has always been good like Pat said

and every now and again when I haven't got a camera

with me I'll do it for B-roll

or bits to camera for my

of things like thumbnails

and I just air drop them to my Mac

and then I edit them on my Mac

and I do not understand

how anybody can do our job

without being able to do that

because you have to send it to the cloud and back

which is a pain in the arse

when we're out on a thing

it's actually really good

because most of insomnia stuff is in your head

so now I wake up in the morning

it's much better than I thought

so I've just got to work on the morning stuff

two hours of deep sleep

most days

is the battery life

after you've had it like because I think I've had this

a virus I had recently

a viral video

I've forgotten how

great it is to have a viral video

because I haven't had one

for so long

and it was one that I did not see coming

at all because it was a studio

shoot of a static car

the new

Datcher Hipster

and it's done nearly

half a million views

nice impressive

and it did it so quickly it was the first

three or four days where it was absolutely flying

was it 125,000

views in 24 hours which I know

if you're Matt Armstrong isn't very impressive

but I haven't had one

you know when you go and you create a studio

and when you've got a video like that flying

and you just can't believe the numbers

the day it went live at half

eight in the morning and I think it was playing Paddle

at like 12 o'clock and I checked

my studio just before it went on court

Paddle and it had done 20,000 views

I played Paddle for an hour and a half

and when it got off court it had done 50,000 views

I was like oh it's

going

yeah yeah

it was great

yeah oh mate good for you

I was really happy because I know that feeling

and it's YouTube is

it's tricky at the moment I'm really struggling

with it it's very uh

and even when you get 50,000 or 100,000 views

the actual ad

return or

just horrendous

and so even if you're

getting decent views you're not making anyone

near as much money so to see something like that

was like yes fantastic

and then the final thing is it's just a really

cool cool car because

you kind of think it's just too complicated

a thing to get into

so it and the reason I said it

doesn't have any competition is because it doesn't

belong in a car segment

so there's a car

segment bigger than

an AMI quadrocycle

okay but

for that they have

a maximum weight of I think

650 kilos

okay

and the the hipster they're aiming at 800

kilos

they can get it to 800 kilos but they'll never

get it to 650 so it can't

be in that lower class

so then the next class up is

an A segment car

but if it's an A segment car

then it comes under all of the

ADAS systems

and passenger protection systems and all

of that stuff which adds weight

and cost so they're

actually trying to create

an entirely new class

of car in the EU is it Ursula

van der Ryan in the EU's is trying

to do it and so that they can just

make it as it is

brilliant yeah just really really clever

briefly though you mentioned

systems on cars and I in my head I was

like yeah the AMI it has no systems but

brand new and that brings me into

a small anecdote about cars like that

that the AMI the other day

my flatmate brought it back with

zero miles of range and he parked up

and said oh I need to charge it later

and I needed to go out so I was like

don't worry I'll go charge it so I get in it

it's flashing it's got like a battery

warning light I was like oh my god

this thing's going to be in limp home mode

it's got zero range right and the range

is only 46 miles to begin with

in theory

no restrictions there's no

electronic limp mode

snail mode nothing there's no

restrictions as to how

it manages

it's zero range

status whereas if you've ever driven

any electric car you get

you get to start like 5-10 miles it's going to start going into like a snail mode

there's a little turtle on the display

yeah I mean there may well

there was no idea what was going on

yeah but Pat I reckon there was probably a turtle

showing on that screen

but because of the page

which is a feature you wouldn't be able to see it

when it gets really low

that faded screen

you know one side's bright and the other side's faded

the other the one side that's bright

that starts getting faded so when that

starts going down

when you see a consistent screen you know you're in trouble

oh my god but yeah that

thing's got zero systems at or whatsoever

not even once to help it manage

maybe a battery light to get you to a charger

I think that's really cool

and I could see that car like with the

AMI being really useful

in places like London and other

metropolitan cities

if you intend to place them with

parking reductions in price they don't do this at the moment

but they should

is it Paris or somewhere that wants to bring

a 4x4 tariff for parking

so if you've got a big car

it costs more money

I mean why not have final mile

or final 5 mile cars like that

that you can drive around in and park up easily

well one of their target markets

for it is yeah the city car

thing but it's the kind of

the commuter village

thing so where you live in a village that's like

15 miles from

the train station and you use

that to get to work on to the train station

because the really interesting

thing they were saying that the Datcha Spring

which is their only EV at the moment

is a fully connected car

and what they've done with that since it's been

live and we've only had it in the UK

for like a year but it's been out

for about four years in Europe

is they've basically

collected all of the journey

data off of that car

since it launched and then they've obviously

kind of taken

all the user names and stuff off it

so it's a generic data

but the average journey

distance for a Datcha Spring

is like 23 miles

wow

and so

they're like what doesn't need

I mean it'll do 200 kilometres it doesn't need

to do any more than that so 23 miles

a day is the average distance

a Datcha Spring currently does

yep

so let's hope

they get it past because

I didn't know about

those regulations but I mean it just

shows once again

the car industry is up against

the most ridiculous

rules and regulations

people try and build small

little efficient

clean city cars

but they can't build them because of

regulations

it's just

the whole thing

it was such a tiny car but honestly

we could have had four

of me or Joes in that car

absolutely no problem at all

it's massive inside

it reminded me and I don't know the size of it

but it reminded me of the

layout and the mentality of the classic Mini

yeah

the classic Mini I can sit in the back of it

and that car like you said it looked like

you sat in the back of it with the

thin seats and stuff like it was

really spacious and the ability to remove that

to have large cargo area was

they really thought about everything

and let's fingers crossed it gets made

it was cool I like

what they do in Datcha because they just have this

you speak to the design team

and they're just trying to do things differently

he's like look cars are too expensive

they've gone

the stat they gave which was so between

2010

and 2025

car prices have gone up by

71%

wow

and wages haven't

so how do we make a car that's

more affordable well you make

it smaller and lighter and you don't use

as much materials because it's lighter

it doesn't need as big a battery to move it

around and a battery is a third of the

cost of an electric car so you can have

a smaller battery

and it's just

I just like the way

and I think a few manufacturers are starting

to do that a bit more but yeah

it was interesting

but that also wasn't the only thing

you did with Datcha was it

no well oh mate

so yeah I went to the last

round of the Rally Raid Championships in Morocco

and

it was really

it was very cool because

Datcha were

Seblo

his

co-driver

so they do a championship

for the co-driver in Rally Raid

the driver and the team

so Edouard was going for co-driver

Nasser Alataya was going for the overall championship

and then they couldn't

Datcha couldn't win the

constructors championship because basically

Seblo had rolled his car too many times this year

pretty much

he crashed quite a lot

so Seblo won the rally

his

co-driver won the championship

and

Nasser Alataya

didn't win the rally but he came in

with enough points

to win the championship

but on the last stage

as they were coming off the stage

him and his co-driver were having an argument

in the car

and didn't see the slow

down signs and drove into the media

pen at 160 kilometers

an hour

oh no way

and got a one hour

time penalty

oh my god

that's really fast

and he lost the championship because of that

and they don't know

there's lots of rumours as to what they were arguing

about whether it was a

navigation error or something

and he said there was dust and they just didn't see it

but yeah it wasn't great at all

they just lost his concentration right at the end

literally the last stage

they finished the last stage of the rally

I think they were in third or fourth place

in the rally and they had enough

points to win

the championship and then they got

a one hour penalty

that could have been

horrendous

that's why they got a one hour penalty

not like a 10 second

drive through

it was amazing

yeah it reminds me of

I'm not a big F1

I watched some F1

but I know a couple of races ago at Monza

when Lewis went out for

an installation lap or something

and he came around

and I saw a clip of him

so the grid is basically

formed up with all the mechanics out there

and then you've got

the final sector

is always on like double wave yellows

and you've got to approach the pit lane

ready to stop

but I saw the clip of Lewis because he was in a rush

to get something changed

and he came in there

absolutely at flat-shot like racing

speed

and you see the speed of him going past all these static

people

and it sounds like a similar sort of thing

it was like oh my god

because obviously I have to say

we had unbelievable access for the team

and I'm gutted for Nasa

because he's such a lovely bloke

and I just don't know

I wanted to ask you about that

Turbo 50

for those of you who don't know

and I think I could be wrong Pete

you can correct me here

but firstly I've never driven

992 Turbo S

or Turbo for that matter

and I think the Turbo 50

years

I think that's what it's called

it's basically the end

to celebrate 50 years of Turbo

and it was the last run out

versions right but it's essentially

under the skin it's just a Turbo S

just a sticker pack

in an interior

so talking about it

as a Turbo S

I mean

I've seen it win every car world

drag race I've seen the figures on paper

I've seen people talking about it

blah blah blah

it's going to be fast

and then you drive it

and it's just

unbelievably

fast

it's literally

I was actually

Marino Franchetti

messaged me this morning

about it because I've done a post yesterday

and he said

that's a bit of a flex

you can't just drop that on us that's not okay

no

it's great

we talk about cars a lot on Instagram

but he said to me

what's it like

is it just fast

does it have soul

is it going to get you in trouble quickly

and I won't repeat

what I said to him

but it is an absolute

time machine

it's the fastest thing I've driven by a country

Mar and my M5

is a fast car

right but getting into that

turbo

it's a jail-baked car

and I think as an older guy

now

and especially what I went through in say 2018

with the R8 speeding stuff

I like to think of myself

as a sensible driver

on the road yes I've pushed cars

but within my limits

and I definitely never

take absolute

liberties with speed limits and stuff

but this car

you can't

it's

you've got to be so careful with it

in any gear

you breathe on it

I can't even explain it

really it is so fast

it's an absolute rocket ship

to put it into context for me

I have three

and I guess maybe we should explain as well

the way that Porsche do press cars

it's often

logistically easier

if you book a couple one after another

because you can just swap them over

and you get some content back

so I had GT3RS

I swapped that out for the 992.2

GTS

so the difference between those two cars

the GT3RS nearly broke me

it's just such a harsh

on it concentration car

but it's very very fast

you get in a

GTST hybrid

and that's faster than a GT3RS

on the road in a straight line

like by some stretch

that thing was just

unbelievable

but it's only two wheel drive

but it's still sub three seconds to 60

and it's unbelievably fast

and you think oh my god

and we traced it and I drove it for a long weekend

and she loved the car and drove it quite a bit

and I was like that's unbelievable

drop that back

and two days later pick up the Turbo S

to take to your wedding

and I'm driving back from Reading

and I was like oh my god

this makes the

GTST hybrid look slow

yep

but the scary thing

is that's the outgoing

Turbo S

the 992.2

Turbo S

the two Turbos

off of the

the GTST only got one Turbo

it's going to have two of them and like was it

700 and something horsepower

what's that going to be like

someone got in that Turbo S

and went yeah it's not fast enough

this will make it faster

yeah

I know

you talk about how fast

3RS is and Joe we obviously experienced that

around Spa and obviously on the straights

and stuff even the base 911

you were like there's a bit of parity

in kind of top speed here

but across a lap

let's use Silverstone

as an example track

across a lap like do you think the Turbo

and the 3RS are kind of giving almost

equal lap times

given how much faster that can

you know the second you're out onto a straight

it's got to be catching up the 3RS

right so

it's the difference even that much

it's just a different style of driving right

it's where the speed comes

it's crossed my mind exactly that

and I was like wow if I could somehow

make that video happen

or idea because

I remember when we went to Spa and I took

James and Michelin out and the 3RS

and you know he was like

this thing is so fast you know

but the first thing I thought about the 3RS

when you're out on track is actually

it's not very fast in the straight line at all

like to me it felt

yeah to me it didn't feel anywhere near

fast enough for how well it handled

especially it's far down the

only got 500 horsepower

it makes

a great sound which helps make it

feel fast but actually

because it's a lot of theatre yeah there's a lot of

theatre but because it's so

composed and so planted it actually

doesn't feel that fast

in a straight line at all

so but and the

Turbo RS is completely the other way

and I think I would

love to see I think

somewhere like Spa 3RS would still be

faster just because it would be

so much quicker through the really fast stuff

where the Turbo just couldn't do those speeds

because of lack of aero but I think

somewhere like

Bedford that's a bit that it's got

much slower corners and hairpins

where the aero would be much less beneficial

and it's got that long back

straight where the Turbo

S would put in so much time

into the 3RS it would be

really interesting because like again

it would be a video that would do about 12 views

if I shot it

it would cost Michelin

a load of money and it would get absolutely no

views but I think yeah it would be a really

interesting layover because

there would be two totally different cars but

if I had to choose one car

on a closed road section

point to point I would

have to say that the Turbo S

on a public road if it was

closed and it was legal

would be faster

you need to take one to the Isle of Man

oh my god

Jesus Christ

no Joe that would be bad

you would end up in Ireland if you

crashed in the Isle of Man

if you missed the corner

you would literally just jump and land

in Ireland somewhere

it would be going that fast

I've always loved the styling of a Turbo S

and when I was looking at

getting my Nilem I did think

oh Turbo S Cabriolet

that would be cool or a Turbo

the big problem is when you look at them used

they've always got a lot of miles on

and having spent a week in that one I understand

why now because it's the kind of 911

you just want to drive it all the time

because it's a lovely cruiser

it's super comfortable but then when you get to

a bit of B road it's like unbelievable

talking about unbelievable

while we're talking about 911s

can we just have a shout out

to Layton

Clark for our track pace

so I did a track day

with Michelin last week

at Donington Park

and as part of that

day I was in the Michelin

911 I did this really innovative

unique video Joe

you'd like the concept

Pilot Sport 4S vs Cup 2

it was brilliant

no one had ever done that before

as part of that

two cool things on the track day

one I got to drive

Darin from RPM Technics

991 GT3 RS

Mantai Racing

which was amazing

but Layton took me out in his 992

GT3 RS

I just

I can't even begin to describe

how late that guy breaks

do you remember when we went to the Nurburgring

and we had the experience in the GT3

and it recalibrated what we thought was possible

in a car that could also have

number plates

do you think it maybe recalibrated you again

oh it was like that guy had the handbrake on

honestly

I can't

I just can't

he was on Cup 2 Rs

and we went down Crainer

I just can't even begin to tell you

how fast he went down Crainer curves

and then at the end we were chatting

and he went these Cup 2 Rs

they've done like four track days

they're knackered they're literally there's nothing left of them

he said if they were fresh

Redgate and Crainer curves

in his GT3 RS is flat

wow

that's just like

oh the guy

I mean

I mean that's why RMA and I know

they're partners of Michelin

and we both experienced track days

with them we both know Layton

we all know Layton very well

and

honestly I think that's what makes those days so good

is Layton

he does such a great job but

the event itself is great

the other cars and the people there are awesome

but it's the fact that

really at the bottom of it

his old man as well that's where it all started

but you look at Layton

and he's such a competent driver

I mean he raced for years

he holds a lot of unofficial

lap records around the UK

I think at Donington Park and his 3 RS

and

I've not actually been

in the car with him because we ran out of time

filming that video they've got no views out as far

but

I've seen his laps on

on socials and obviously

I've also tried to follow

I was going to say if you're

not sure about who we're talking about go and find

our box and gas

episode from this year because we walk around

Layton's car and chat to Layton

and that's the car we're talking about going out in

but honestly

for me

my summary of the GT3 RS was

it's too much car for me

I couldn't exploit that car

and really get my money's worth

I'd be better off with just a standard GT3

Layton's the kind of guy

who can exploit every inch

of that car it was unbelievable

absolutely unbelievable

so yeah

yeah must work harder to be a

better driver was my

my conclusion from that track

though

yeah

we've done an hour look

I've got a small fact to leave you on

whilst you were talking about that I've gone

and we're comparing

GT3 RS against

Turbo S

the answer runs smart

you just said GT2 RS

the most interesting one here is

because I obviously don't know who's done

any of these laps and it's hard to

there's not that much data

but Motor Trend have a figure of eight circuit

that they use for all of their road tests

so it's a very flat and even

like every single car does the same

track layout I assume it's the same kind

half a second difference

between a 3RS

and a Turbo S so I assume that's a very small track

I can give you a track you might know

you've got

Laguna Seca

is three seconds

Nevergreen GP Sprint

is three seconds

so yeah I think on those

twisty tracks with the

that's where you're probably going to make up the

where the best chance is

but when you've got those high speed aero corners

obviously as we Joe as we experience

at least even for the passenger seat

the 3RS is a joke

it feels like you're on rails like it doesn't feel like

what you're doing should be possible

yeah

thanks to the aero so yeah I think

maybe even like a even a Silverstone

I think might be a quite a good one right

there's a lot of long straights

you need something with some straights

yeah no but Silverstone there's a lot

that like Maggots and Beckett all those

it's all fast there's a lot of fast

stuff so I think the 3RS would come alive

we'll do it at Bedford we'll speak to Porsche and Michelin

yeah it should be easy
