In a world with entirely too many shows about cars, this is another Pointless Automotive Podcast.
00:16
Welcome back to another Pointless Automotive Podcast.
00:22
Hot off the heels of our four-year Princeton Flowers anniversary, Frank.
00:27
How are you doing today?
00:31
As I mentioned last week, I was cleaning up my garage.
00:35
Part of that was I found this Luigi hat, which is good.
00:41
It's big and foamy.
00:43
And this was pre-political statement Luigi year.
00:48
So I don't know if that makes it more genuine or less genuine.
00:52
I don't know, but free being able to wear Luigi gear unencumbered.
01:02
So yeah, that's good.
01:03
I'm going to set it over here.
01:05
Let's see if I can make it into the basket of the Honda Passport without me looking,
01:11
with me viewing through my camera here.
01:14
And I'll do NBA Jam commentary.
01:20
It was pretty good data, a little wide left.
01:30
I also swapped out the video game background for those following at YouTube.
01:33
You definitely did it before we started recording.
01:35
I didn't do it just now when Frank was lining up for the shot of the century.
01:39
This is, don't mind the sticker art.
01:41
This is Tokyo Extreme Racer 2 for a Sega Dreamcast.
01:48
Fresh off the hills.
01:49
I definitely stole it.
01:50
It took your Extreme Racer the original last time.
01:52
This is also Sega Dreamcast.
01:53
You would have downloaded a car.
01:58
So we're literally, we're late on a lot of topics, we're late on the cars we talk
02:08
Are you sitting down?
02:11
Looks like I need to make a nursery.
02:15
So I like Simpsons.
02:18
We talk about the Simpsons a lot.
02:19
I like the show a lot.
02:20
It's probably my favorite show of all time.
02:22
Treehouse of Horrors are some of my favorite episodes and I kind of wanted to do this last
02:25
year or the year before we kind of, we are horrible.
02:28
They were horrible people.
02:31
Garage of horrors we are.
02:35
It's I kind of want to document some of our personal wrenching nightmare stories
02:38
and that's kind of a fun thing to go.
02:39
If you're looking at your calendars and wondering what the hell I'm talking
02:45
It's almost a month.
02:47
Let's roll with it next year.
02:48
Maybe we'll be better.
02:50
So I wanted to personally horrify one another with some end-the-listeners.
02:57
Nobody from Belarus has joined this week.
03:00
Maybe we can want them over by you.
03:01
You mentioned Belarus twice.
03:06
Maybe Megan Lukashenko is our only Belarusian listener.
03:10
How about you, Frank?
03:12
Do you have a horrible wrenching nightmare?
03:14
Horrible wrenching story?
03:17
Anything you want to share with us?
03:18
I'm trying to think of ones that I've never discussed on the pod.
03:23
I'm sure I probably have.
03:29
You know, one I remember and I'm pretty sure, I don't know about in this specific context
03:34
but one that I'm pretty sure I've discussed at some point was my 280ZX turbo.
03:46
That's a car I would love to revisit.
03:51
That's the only Z I've ever owned and I've never really drove it.
03:55
I drove it hundreds of feet and realized it was still very broken.
04:01
I've driven some of those cars in different scenarios but it's kind of the unloved Z.
04:12
It kind of is, right?
04:13
It's like very underappreciated.
04:17
Mine was a 2 plus 2 turbo silver and blue two-tone five-speed T-top car which is a pretty cool
04:28
The 2 plus 2 turns a lot of people off but interesting car.
04:35
And the horror on that one was, without being here all day, was I bought it with a quote
04:43
I originally bought it to make it into a lemon's car.
04:46
I decided it was too nice to hack up and turn into a lemon's car because it was like
04:53
100 and I think it was like 112, 113,000 mile car.
04:59
Paint was in great shape.
05:01
Interior was largely very good.
05:03
There were a couple of tears on the driver's seat bottom in the silver leather.
05:08
It was a silver leather seating surface car.
05:20
I decided it was too cool.
05:21
So I yanked the turbo out of it.
05:24
I sent it off to get rebuilt, replaced the turbo feed line which is kind of the
05:31
bugaboo on those cars.
05:32
That's how they die.
05:33
It's got a long turbo feed line that comes from the other side of the engine, wraps
05:38
around the back of the motor and then feeds the turbo.
05:42
And that's how those things, the turbos die is people aren't up on their oil changes
05:46
diligently enough or they get a little bit too hot and you coke up that line and
05:50
it starts the turbo and then now you're buying a turbo and they weren't water-cooled.
05:55
They were, they were air-cooled or just oil-cooled turbos.
05:59
So yeah, so they were prone to that sort of thing.
06:03
Pulled the turbo out, got it rebuilt, put it all back together in a while, I did some
06:09
while you're in there type stuff, right?
06:10
So I did plugs and I pulled the valve cover and I repainted it, the crinkle finish
06:15
black and put it all back together, oops, actually turned out I had a bad head gasket
06:25
I never did any further digging.
06:27
The guy I bought it from drained the crankcase because I pulled the dipstick
06:31
and it was milkshaked and it wasn't milkshaked when I started.
06:34
So I think dude was like, oh yeah, it needs a turbo, but it had a bad head gasket.
06:39
It was burning coolant and oil and I don't know if he put used oil in it.
06:44
I don't know if it just wasn't milkshaked until I touched it because
06:47
I had seen the oil before and it was fine.
06:51
And yeah, I ended up basically selling it for everything I was in it with
06:54
my labor being free, broke even and it was a guy who I think he had one
07:01
and a tree fell on it.
07:03
And so but he had just he had rebuilt the motor like 10,000 miles ago.
07:07
So he was going to take the motor out of that car, put it in my car.
07:11
I have no idea whereabouts are today.
07:14
I hope it's cruising around.
07:16
I had the bitch and daddy option.
07:19
It had I think every single option except for it did not have the digital dash.
07:24
OK, had the analog dash word was the original owner because it came out of
07:30
like the Palo Alto area and the original owner was a like an engineer like
07:36
Lockheed Martin and worked down there by making Hangar one and all that.
07:40
So yeah, you know, flight engineer spec.
07:45
Yeah, I love I love those cars.
07:47
They could be a little pain in the dick to get through smog.
07:50
The early ones, you know, it's it's just early 80s turbo technology.
07:57
They probably barely pass smog brand new, to be honest.
08:00
If we held them against today's standard.
08:03
I love how they look.
08:04
They've aged pretty well, in my opinion.
08:07
It's just like a more cumbersome 240Z.
08:09
But I kind of like the 80s touches to it.
08:12
So yeah, they're killer.
08:13
Nacaduct hood scoop and teatops are cool.
08:17
And, you know, they're a little soft.
08:18
They were more of a GT thing compared to the earlier cars.
08:20
Sure. That's why they're not as loved, right?
08:22
But like, I don't know.
08:24
I'd rather have one than a than a Z 31, I think.
08:28
Hot take. But oh, that's a little spicy.
08:32
Just surprise head gasket jobs are never fun to find.
08:35
I freaking it sucks.
08:37
I've been there too.
08:38
But yeah, you're just it's like one of the top things you're not looking for.
08:41
It's like having to do a clutch immediately, right?
08:44
Like a surprise clutch failure.
08:45
So yeah, I've been there, done that too.
08:49
Kind of a little bit.
08:51
Yeah, it's when people tell you there's like something wrong
08:54
and that's the only thing that indicates wrong.
08:56
You just know you've got to assume there's something else going on, right?
09:00
But so my buddy, a good buddy of mine has a super clean low mileage 90.
09:05
1994 Mustang GT, super cool Fox body.
09:08
And he was like over it because and he had the car for a long time,
09:12
like eight years, he had basic maintenance and then some upgrades
09:16
done by his family mechanic and the guy literally just he threw
09:23
replacement parts at everything.
09:24
And I'm not talking like researched parts.
09:27
He's talking about like part zone, like going to other zone
09:30
and getting like the cheapest brand map sensor or something to that.
09:34
And you know, that never works, right?
09:36
Dude even bought a remanufactured ECU from other zone.
09:40
So that's how far he went down the rabbit hole of trying to fix these
09:44
little issues. And then my so basically this Mustang got delivered to me.
09:49
Barely could idle, which is fall on its face, smoke the entire garage.
09:53
I pray I talked about it back in the day, but I mean, it literally
09:56
would smoke me out of the garage, just running it for like 20 seconds.
09:59
Well, every nothing was right.
10:01
And nothing was right about the car.
10:02
So I start poking around.
10:04
I see weird things like blue marine RTV holding the intake manifold on.
10:09
No gasket. I see sensors just left disconnected.
10:13
I saw one sensor where he used RTV to seal it and just put one screw on one side.
10:18
So, you know, the usual hack stuff that you don't want to see
10:22
when you get into a car and it was super clean when my buddy had it.
10:25
So I start that process, dude, these this is always I don't buy.
10:30
I would I love working on this car because it's a buddy of mine,
10:33
but I would never buy a car in this condition because it becomes like this night
10:37
like you think you're tracking one issue and it's something completely different,
10:41
especially when you started swapping out sensors.
10:43
Yeah, those to me are like my biggest nightmare scenarios
10:47
where a mechanic has done everything to the car and it's somehow worse.
10:51
Yeah, worse worse than what it started out with the issue being reported as.
10:55
Right. So now I had, oh, well, that issue is a less noticeable
10:58
because these bigger issues are kind of taking over the the stage.
11:02
Right. Unbelievable, dude, the amount of stuff that just piled up like
11:07
so you do the first stuff like you do a you do like a I don't know,
11:10
compression test to make sure the engine's good before I even put effort into it.
11:13
It was good, good compression.
11:14
So I'm like, OK, we're working with a good box.
11:16
The blocks were good. Yes.
11:17
Yeah, let's let's go with this.
11:18
And then I'm like, let me check the ignition timing.
11:21
It was like so far off.
11:23
I'm like, well, that's our first problem.
11:25
Right. So just doing the basics.
11:27
Like first off, taking off the intake manifold,
11:29
doing all those things that were leaking or disconnected or RTV sealed shut.
11:34
Like he had done a sensor.
11:36
I wish I remember what sensor it was on the throttle.
11:38
It was near the throttle body.
11:39
And he had put too much RTV, like so much that it went around the sensor inside.
11:45
And it was just by a pure miracle that the intake
11:47
it didn't get sucked into the intake manifold.
11:49
Sure. Like I'm like, what the this guy had like
11:52
he's like the Bob Ross of RTV had like every two.
11:55
He's like, I'm just going to put it a little blue RTV here.
11:57
Look at that happy little marine intake.
12:00
Lobbled. Yes, dude, so bad.
12:03
But yeah, that's where I started.
12:04
And eventually we got the car running.
12:05
It did need to get like professionally tuned
12:07
because the ECU and everything was swapped out.
12:10
Right. That's right.
12:11
But just you don't I would never
12:14
no matter how in the car is exceptionally clean.
12:16
It's a buddy of mine.
12:17
That's why I took on all that work.
12:18
But a regular shop would have turned it away.
12:20
Right. Like you start seeing all those kind of hack things.
12:23
You're like, yeah, it's not touching.
12:24
You can't blame them. Right.
12:27
If they're a good shop
12:28
and they've got a lot of business coming in because they're a good shop.
12:32
The absolute last thing you want to do is is.
12:36
Have someone open a can of worms
12:38
and then hand like microwave it till it's boiling hot
12:41
and then hand you the boiling hot can of someone else's worms.
12:45
Yep. I don't want that.
12:46
And so and and yeah, completely get that it's.
12:53
Can I just say that my least favorite thing
12:57
is when people default to
13:00
Oh, it's got to be an ECU problem.
13:02
Hey, it's not that it never happens.
13:06
But to be like, oh, there's this one thing
13:10
that like I try to hail Mary on and threw some part at it and it didn't work.
13:14
And then I keep beating my head against the same wall
13:17
and the result didn't change.
13:18
So it's got to be an ECU.
13:20
Dude, as soon as you nailed it,
13:22
as soon as someone says it's got to be the ECU ECM, whatever it is,
13:25
I go, if that's our immediate diagnosis of the issue,
13:29
I immediately go, OK, I'm going to I'm going to just take the car.
13:32
We're going to we're going to get away from here
13:34
because usually that's it's really poor diagnostic work.
13:38
And then nine, nine or 11 out of 10 times
13:41
when you replace that ECU, the issue's still there
13:44
because it wasn't the ECU Go figure.
13:47
And we've made it worse.
13:48
Yeah, the new ECU in the case of this Mustang
13:51
was a piece of shit off the shelf aftermarket one
13:53
where you just got rid of.
13:55
You got in the zone.
13:56
Yeah, he had a he had an actual Cobra ECU in originally.
13:59
So someone took that perfectly running well, I'm sure.
14:02
And so they turn it, they send it in as a core.
14:05
Yeah. So whoever got that was like, oh, fuck,
14:08
I'm just going to quit my job and make a lot of money on this right now,
14:11
because let's go for like six hundred, seven hundred bucks.
14:13
And then I'm going to sell him this $200 reman auto zone special.
14:16
Cardone. Yeah, it's great.
14:20
It's three X's my horsepower or 10 or whatever that grifter does.
14:25
Unbelievable. Yeah, you're right.
14:26
It's just it's and it happens.
14:29
It's you. But usually it's like,
14:32
oh, there's this weird no start condition or there's like it's not usually
14:37
the car runs poorly.
14:39
It's like it works or it doesn't, right?
14:41
Or there's or this or it's like, oh, this is a known issue.
14:44
And this is intermittent, whatever.
14:49
Yeah. Oh, it runs poorly and it won't pass small.
14:51
It's got to be the ECU like no. Sure.
14:53
By that ever. Yeah.
14:55
And that's that's why this was a nightmare project on top of all of this.
14:59
So like maybe like the first few days of me working on the car,
15:03
like finding all these issues, right?
15:04
I go under the car and I'm looking at some stuff.
15:07
I come out, go to start the car just to see some things that dead like nothing.
15:12
I'm like, what the fuck?
15:14
So I swap out, I look at the starter solenoid, I short the solenoid.
15:18
So I'll start in the starter engages and I'm like, holy fuck.
15:21
So there's something going on after like a full like day of diagnostic
15:25
trying to figure out what's going on with the starter.
15:27
I go, does this thing have a kill switch on it?
15:29
And my buddy goes, oh, yeah, it does.
15:30
It's like right under the front bumper.
15:32
It's easy to hit if you crawl under there.
15:33
I'm like, bro, a tow truck is showing up at your house in a half an hour.
15:38
It's going to have a goddamn car on it.
15:41
I wish this and I mean, dude, it hung right behind where the bumper plastic
15:45
is because you usually want to hide it.
15:46
Yeah. So you can reach down and do it.
15:48
But also you don't want anyone to see it
15:49
because that's obvious someone could just fuck with you or right.
15:52
Obviously undo your kill switch.
15:53
But I just perfectly right where I squeeze under the front.
15:56
My knee had hit it.
15:57
It was on the outside of the car.
15:59
So underneath the bumper, like the plastic bumper.
16:01
Yeah, underneath in the front.
16:02
Not like under the dash or somewhere convenient.
16:05
Like, boy, it's pouring ass rain.
16:08
Oh, let me let me go start and drive my.
16:10
Shipbox Mustang that's like full of right, you know, O'Reilly parts
16:14
or Pepple. I mean, to be fair, it was like behind the plastic part of the
16:17
but it was up in there enough, but it hung down enough.
16:21
Like also, if you drag your bumper, you might hit it.
16:23
See what you'd be interested in driving a speed bump.
16:24
And it just the whole car goes dead.
16:27
But anyway, no idea.
16:29
So I'm over here diagnosing a no start, no crank.
16:34
And I'm like, I'm not doing this, which is good.
16:37
Like I've got continuity like going through all of this.
16:39
Yeah, jump the starter.
16:41
So are those are those like the older forge where it's just like
16:45
it's a separate solenoid on the firewall.
16:47
So it's on the side fender.
16:49
So you can lay a screwdriver across that.
16:51
The cylinder looking dude and you just work it out.
16:53
Yeah. And it could fucking arc hard.
16:55
I'll tell you that much.
16:56
Yeah, it likes it likes our card.
16:58
But anyway, that was just candy on top of that already delicious dessert.
17:03
And ultimately, we did get it running.
17:05
It's just one of those jobs when it comes in.
17:06
And plus I had never seen the car before.
17:09
So it's like, not only do I have to unfuck like a guy's like any.
17:13
The other thing is you left it with the mechanic for an extended period of time.
17:15
I think almost a year.
17:16
So I'm on fucking a year's worth of like I'm Mr.
17:19
Like parts guy. Yeah, that's the problem, right?
17:23
At night, it was an absolute night.
17:25
I'll say it's a nightmare.
17:26
I'm glad that I helped my buddy out and we got it's running great now, by the way.
17:30
The car is amazing after that tune from a professional tuner and got some stuff sorted.
17:35
Did it it didn't immediately just start like devouring children
17:38
outside of a car some coffee on a weekend?
17:40
No, I wish to just think so clean.
17:43
It was like a low mileage white Fox body just looked right.
17:46
The interior was 10 out of 10.
17:48
It's his dream car and he has some cool cobra mods on there.
17:50
So it's like legit.
17:51
It's like it's really good.
17:53
You know, that horse got snakes.
17:55
Yeah, dude, horse snake.
17:57
But those are the kind of things in that to me was like one of those scenarios
18:01
that could easily spot if it was my own personal car, I would have been panicking
18:04
because those are the ones that just you blow budgets, you blow timelines.
18:09
Imagine if you bought it in the prior owner just didn't tell you about the kill switch.
18:15
Especially the way it was hidden to like who would put it there?
18:18
And like, I don't know.
18:19
Thanks for letting me know it was there.
18:21
Yeah, good, good scenario right there, dude.
18:23
That's a nightmare scenario.
18:28
I was like enthralled of just like thinking about bad ECU bullshit.
18:33
Oh, my God, not thinking about because again, I'm the one who doesn't take
18:37
notes about about other shit that like has gone wrong because there's a lot.
18:43
I mean, I mean, shoot, we can we can talk about the the trials and tribulations
18:47
of the the focus SVT like, yeah, unbelievable.
18:53
Well, I mean, it's semi recent.
18:54
So I don't want to spend too much time talking about it.
18:56
But how about that?
19:02
How about this is just a theme because it's definitely happened to me.
19:06
You buy the brand new part and the brand new part instantly shits the bed, right?
19:11
Dude, it should be told.
19:12
It's been happening more recently, right?
19:14
Sure. I mean, it's kind of boy.
19:16
I mean, it's kind of always happened.
19:18
Like I remember probably the first instance, the earliest instance
19:22
that I could remember for me is in high school is the starter on my barracuda.
19:32
It was, you know, questionable age and origin, old school, just old shitty
19:39
Mopar probably built in Saginaw, Michigan starter.
19:43
And it just it just finally just it was it's slow cranked for like a week.
19:50
And then it was just done.
19:52
So fished it out, replaced it with a later gear reduction starter.
19:59
So if you you could order starting in like 91 up until I believe 92 or 93
20:09
when it switched over to the the the Magnum V8, which was just that, you know,
20:15
it was basically an advanced version of the original L.A.
20:19
series Mopar small block, right?
20:21
And in those late run L.A.
20:23
Mopar small block like 318 or 360, they had a much smaller,
20:28
like more modern gear reduction starter and you just bolted in.
20:32
So sick. I just went to my local, whatever, Napa car parts.
20:37
Auto parts, I should say.
20:39
That's Napa auto parts went there.
20:42
The starter and I think I don't it might not have been Napa.
20:44
It was whomever, right?
20:45
Went to the local aftermarket.
20:48
Joint paid whatever it was, probably at the time, 120 bucks
20:52
for a new aftermarket starter.
20:58
It was great, quieter, cranked faster because of the gear reduction.
21:02
It was much smaller.
21:03
It was probably 60 percent of the size of the original one.
21:07
Holy shit. Put it in.
21:08
Everything everything's great.
21:11
I think it lasted like three days.
21:14
And this is by daily at the time.
21:15
Oh, and then it just and it wasn't like slow crank.
21:20
It would just click, click, click, click, click, click.
21:22
I was like, what the fuck did I got?
21:24
Did I kill my battery?
21:27
Click, click, click, click, click.
21:29
So I'm going, oh, man, I'm an idiot.
21:31
I screwed something up like I've got my, you know,
21:34
it's got to be like my negative, you know,
21:37
terminal wire that goes from the battery to the starter.
21:39
And let me go look at that.
21:40
Oh, it's pretty old.
21:41
Maybe I had to replace it, but it looks like it's got good.
21:43
I'm just like troubleshooting all this shit as a 16 year old, 17 year old
21:50
and going up, up, up, up, up, up, up, up, up, up, up.
21:52
And I talked to some old head who's like, oh, you bought like, you know,
21:56
a new aftermarket or remand starter, as you said, right?
22:00
Oh, all these aftermarket parts these days, getting worse.
22:03
And then get off my lawn.
22:05
It's a bad part. Well, the old right, you know.
22:10
They bench tested it like, oh, yeah, this thing's done.
22:13
Here you go. They handed me a new one.
22:15
I think it's still in the car to this day.
22:19
Oh, wow. The second, the warranty starter.
22:23
Yeah, just a bad part and it and it happens.
22:26
And I've had it happen with, you know, the reason I brought it up
22:30
was the lower coolant hose on the Focus SVT special order.
22:34
The part in its SVT specific and I wrestle it in, you know,
22:38
whatever it was 36 hours before the start of the rally.
22:44
There's a bad casting in this, like, wide joint.
22:48
So it's pissing coolant out. Great.
22:53
God, I'm trying to think.
22:54
I promise I've had other.
22:56
Oh, I had actually the opposite of it.
23:00
And my one of my first gen forerunners.
23:03
And I'll let you add to this here in a second.
23:05
You can throw more vegetables into this soup of bad new parts
23:09
where I did it was the opposite where
23:12
at a first gen, my first gen forerunner, 87 forerunner, 22 RE automatic.
23:23
I kept getting low charging.
23:26
Warnings, which on that car is just a simple alternator,
23:29
single red LED that lights up doing.
23:34
Shit, OK, you know, I tested at the battery.
23:38
It was only it was it putting out like 12.9, 13.1, something like that.
23:43
OK, we're not we're not charging properly.
23:46
I look it's what looks like the original starter and car add.
23:50
I don't know, 170,000 miles at the time.
23:54
OK, it's random times.
23:55
You'll nip and denso.
23:56
So I pulled it out and I take it to the local local car,
24:00
you know, used car, whatever, not used, but O'Reilly's, whatever.
24:04
Autosome, take it there.
24:06
Hey, man, I'd love to sell you a starter.
24:08
I just tested this thing.
24:09
It Bench test perfect.
24:11
No, honestly, and if if he was right, he would have been right.
24:17
But if he was right, his point was was valid, which was like,
24:20
this is a nice OE nip and denso starter.
24:22
I tested it. It tests great.
24:25
You should just put this back in the car versus buying some whatever
24:28
a one car don't part that I'm going to sell you out of my place here.
24:33
I'd love to sell you a starter, but this is a good starter.
24:36
Shit, OK, put it back in the car.
24:39
I keep getting the same problem.
24:41
So I'm cleaning all my grounds.
24:43
I found there's an old there was like an old fusible link
24:47
in the charging circuit on that.
24:49
And I'm like, well, you know, maybe there's a.
24:51
So I went to a pick and pull and I found it and I swapped that out.
24:55
And I swap I'm swapping out a bunch of parts.
24:57
And it I can't I can't correct it.
24:59
If I would rev it up, the charge light would go away.
25:03
But I would be at idle in gear.
25:05
I would get this charge. I'm like, fuck.
25:08
So I go, you know what?
25:09
I'm going to fire the parts candidate.
25:11
Fuck it. I pull the starter back out after doing all this other work.
25:16
I put it. I put a remand starter in it.
25:19
Perfect. Great. Huh. Done.
25:21
Solved. I don't know why a bench tested OK.
25:25
I trust that he actually did it.
25:27
I don't know. Right.
25:28
Random part aftermarket parts counter guys making $11 an hour.
25:31
And doubt that that's bad thing.
25:32
But like he's not a an engineer and electrical, you know, right.
25:42
But that was like the inverse of like this was the known bad part
25:45
that tested good when I went to buy a known good part.
25:49
Yeah. And but there's lots of like if the test isn't done right,
25:52
like, and then you have like a false positive, right?
25:55
Like so like EGRs, you can make the diaphragm move up and down with a vacuum
25:59
like a hand vacuum.
26:00
You're like, Oh, my EGR is good, except you're supposed to do that.
26:04
Put the vacuum on it and then wait to see if it leaks out
26:06
because that means the diaphragm is leaking.
26:07
Yeah. So a lot of people just do it and like, Oh, plunger moves.
26:12
No, bro. If it does it and then like it's right back down.
26:15
Yeah. It's essentially leak down.
26:17
It's not good. So sometimes doing those tests or you go EGR is great.
26:21
It's got to be something else.
26:22
We're like, no, man.
26:23
Like, yeah, the EGR valve is working fine, but the car is never getting
26:27
signal to actually send, send, you know, vacuum to the EGR valve, right?
26:33
You just got to, you got to go to the next step upstream,
26:35
but people just will do that.
26:36
But yep, it's good, you know.
26:38
Yeah. That's an extra nightmare scenario.
26:41
Yeah. When do you, don't say it, what do you think you fixed an issue
26:45
and you've ruled that out and that still is a goddamn issue.
26:48
So you're troubleshooting around that, the known issue,
26:50
which is actually the real cause, but EGRs are like that.
26:53
And then like it's like my track or like the EGR is fine,
26:55
but now the intake manifold, all the EGR runners are fucking full.
26:59
Like, you have to take the intake manifold off.
27:01
Whole other story there.
27:02
But another nightmare scenario, diagnostic diagnostics,
27:05
I think trip up most like DIYers or mechanics.
27:08
I hate it, but it's also so fun.
27:11
But like one of the hardest things is diagnosing a sound.
27:14
I think those can be the absolute most challenging.
27:17
So my 07 legacy spec be one of the best cars I ever owned out
27:21
of it for seven years.
27:23
All of a sudden I was driving and under like boost
27:26
would make a whistling sound and you're like, oh, fucking turbo.
27:29
You know, you haven't sat it had lower mileage.
27:32
So I wasn't too worried about the turbo.
27:33
And I'm like, it could be anywhere.
27:35
It could be on the intake guide.
27:37
It could be the exhaust side.
27:38
It could be anything, right?
27:40
And if you've ever worked on a boxer engine,
27:42
you know how much of a pain in the literal dick it is to get.
27:45
It's very complicated.
27:46
It's like tight in there.
27:48
The up pipe area, the down pipe area, everything's tight.
27:50
All the intake to the intercooler stuff.
27:52
Well, the pipes are tight.
27:53
So anyway, try to find the sound.
27:55
I take everything apart.
27:59
It's literally a pain in the dick.
28:00
Take everything off.
28:01
I replaced every gasket.
28:03
To be fair, if you're wrenching on your legacy
28:07
or anything else and you have literal pain in your dick,
28:10
you're probably doing it incorrectly.
28:14
Or super like, or like super correctly.
28:20
So the funny thing is there's like a million unique gaskets
28:23
for all the different joints because the system is a flat engine.
28:25
It goes around at weird angles, replaced every gasket,
28:29
did really high quality ones like Grim Speed at the time.
28:32
It's a lot of money.
28:34
Get it all back together.
28:35
And I'm like, oh, my God, it's not doing it.
28:39
And I'm like, son of a, you know.
28:42
I'm talking like to take all that apart is hours.
28:44
Like little hours then put it all back together.
28:46
I'm like, you got to be fine, kid.
28:48
So the only thing I didn't touch was the up pipe.
28:49
And I'm like, God, it looked, it looked really good.
28:52
So I look the factory up pipe.
28:55
The factory up pipe has a flex section.
28:57
And so I'm like, let me just look at the flex section.
29:00
So I flex it a little perfect hairline crack.
29:03
So every time I was hitting boost, the up pipe was going.
29:06
So after market up pipe, we're good.
29:08
But those goddamn dude, just that job.
29:12
And it was a East Coast car.
29:13
Not super crusty, but that part of your car
29:16
gets all the water and snow damage.
29:18
And it's mostly just like mild steel.
29:20
And I broke three bolts taking all that stuff.
29:23
It like it was down for like a weekend plus to find a sound.
29:26
Like that's the worst.
29:27
Expending money to get rid of a sound like no performance
29:30
difference, no like maintenance difference, just
29:33
painting the dick work.
29:34
And then just to go for that.
29:36
When I went for that first drive on that Monday
29:38
and I was like, oh my God, it's fixed.
29:40
And then the it's like the most high pitch.
29:44
Like I, and I hate noises.
29:45
Like, you know, me, I can't say it at one point.
29:48
It's like drag to breaks.
29:50
Dragging is one of my other pet peeves.
29:52
But dude, just and then to swap out that up pipe,
29:54
which Matt taken everything fucking off the engine again.
30:00
Can one go through?
30:01
Just like I was like one for you, one for me with the
30:05
So I was I was getting drunk with the car.
30:07
But dude, just those those little things like
30:11
diagnosing sounds is like another always it can
30:13
it has the potential to really become a nightmare.
30:18
Oh, I think it's this and you can get out of the car
30:20
and you can move the car.
30:21
It won't ever make the fucking same noise.
30:23
And then the second you drive it out of like your garage
30:25
and hit like a little pot hole or speed bump.
30:27
It's like and you're like, oh my God, exactly.
30:30
Where's a bridge bridge too far?
30:33
Yeah, it's I'm trying to remember.
30:36
So you mentioned you mentioned with that flex pipe.
30:38
I don't even remember which car of mine this was.
30:42
But it had it would have this intermission
30:49
Like stumble under more than like three quarter throttle.
30:53
You'd give it like those annoying.
30:55
If you would tow in it would be fine.
30:56
Fifty percent of throttle would be fine.
30:58
Give it much more than that, right?
30:59
Like you would punch it and it would it would shit the bed.
31:03
It was like, OK, like there's it's it's it's
31:05
there's some enrichment issue, right?
31:08
So and that's what it was presenting as.
31:11
And I don't even remember how I how I found it.
31:14
But what actually was happening was and all the hoses under the hood look great.
31:23
It was worn motor mounts and there was some it was like a PCV line
31:29
or some some bigger vacuum hose that at idle or with the car off looked perfect.
31:37
But when you give it bigger throttle, it would move on the motor mounts
31:41
and there was like a split in the line that you couldn't see.
31:45
Until but there was enough play in the motor mounts.
31:47
It would pull it apart and it was just it would just suck in tons of unmetered air
31:52
and it would just hit the bed.
31:57
And that's what it was.
31:58
It was like, OK, it needs motor mounts.
31:59
That's fine. And I was just playing with like, oh, yeah.
32:01
Look how bad it needs motor mounts.
32:02
And then I'd like saw it at the corner of my eye.
32:04
I was like, oh, like this this line would just split open
32:08
and just like pull all this air.
32:09
We should be shit like, oh, that's my problem.
32:12
And sure enough, like I thought it was I thought it was like, you know,
32:16
it was getting either getting too much fuel or not enough fuel.
32:19
And it was just getting too much unmetered air.
32:21
And yeah, that was less of a nightmare.
32:25
More of just like, whoa, I'm glad I saw that at the right moment
32:27
because otherwise, you know, you know, unless I smoke tested everything,
32:32
I wasn't going to find it.
32:34
Unbelievable. But yeah, it's just like even the thing that gets me to
32:37
is like when it's on a good car and you run into one of these
32:40
like nightmare scenarios, right?
32:41
Like we we intentionally get ourselves into some of these situations.
32:44
Oh, sure. You know, we we see the red flag.
32:47
It's like women. You see, you see the red flag and you're like, I can.
32:53
Or sex bots or clinkers.
32:56
There's a lot of red flag in that in that clinker.
32:59
Those ones you kind of like set yourself up like emotionally
33:03
everything else, because you know, you're going to have to
33:04
you're going to have to deal with this eventually.
33:06
But when it happens to like a good running vehicle, like out of the blue
33:09
and then you're going down diagnostic hell.
33:11
Boy, those can become real nightmares real fast.
33:14
And I think we get some pretty good ones in.
33:17
This will be we'll make it more Halloweeny next year.
33:20
But just I don't know.
33:21
We talked about sex bots.
33:22
It's Halloween adjacent.
33:25
So what I do want to hear is like, if any of our listeners
33:28
have had any absolute nightmare jobs,
33:31
dude, share it with us because misery fucking loves company.
33:34
Yeah, that that that's like adjacent to our like awful car stories
33:39
is awful car wrenching stories.
33:41
Oh, God, you know, we know you got some.
33:44
Yeah, like the you know, it's funny.
33:47
It's just a quick, a quick aside.
33:49
So when I was when I was in high school, a buddy
33:51
mine had a it was an 86 Camaro Iroxie.
33:57
It was like cream white with a brown interior.
34:02
Oh, he tops 305 TBI five speed.
34:10
And I had like all the Iroxie stuff.
34:13
And the wheels were like factory, like gold, like gold lettering.
34:17
And the wheels were like gold.
34:19
They were like the the silver, but like with like the painted.
34:22
Yeah, gold accent and the accent.
34:26
At the time, we gave them shit for it, right?
34:28
Because like he bought it.
34:29
He thought it was he thought it was a 350.
34:32
And then he figured out after like, oh, no, like two weeks later,
34:35
it's like, bro, the 350s were all auto.
34:38
And so we're like looking at like the emissions label under the hood.
34:41
Like, bro, this is five liter, you're fucked.
34:44
Even though I take a five liter, five speed over the 350, they actually,
34:49
I mean, they drive OK.
34:50
Like they're better. Yeah.
34:52
Better than a higher.
34:52
We did speaking of dumb car stories.
34:54
We did dumb car story stuff in that.
34:58
Let's just say when you're in high school in your home,
35:00
he's getting new tires and then you decide you need to make the old ones go away.
35:04
You do you do things in that car.
35:08
Anyways, he basically he was like, oh, dude,
35:13
I think my transmission is fucked on this car.
35:15
I need a transmission.
35:17
So we're like, OK, it was it was he's like, yeah, like it just,
35:20
you know, I put it in whatever gear, like it's fine in first and second.
35:24
But if I put it in like third, like it just it just revs,
35:28
like I think it's like something like I think I blew third gear out of it
35:30
because again, doing dumb stuff and we're, you know, whatever, 17.
35:35
So we go to a pick and pull.
35:37
We drag another T five out of a car and pick and pull.
35:42
We get it to we took high school auto shop.
35:46
So we limp the car.
35:46
We put the transmission in the trunk of his Iraq.
35:49
We limp it over to the high school auto shop, put it in the air.
35:53
We drop the transmission on my my buddy almost drops it on his head.
35:56
Like he was a big dude, thankfully, he caught it.
35:59
He was like six three water polo player.
36:01
He caught it and was just like, we caught him and we just like
36:05
landed on the ground with the transmission to drop out of his car.
36:07
God damn. We do all of that.
36:09
We get in there. His clutches smoked.
36:13
Transmission was fine.
36:14
What was happening was first and second gear was fine.
36:18
But when you put it in the higher gear and you give it give it the beans,
36:21
it would torque just flare because the.
36:24
So it is flywheel was burnt, clutch was gone.
36:29
I don't I think we just put his original transmission back in it.
36:32
So we're like, I don't trust this like junkyard one.
36:34
Like I would keep the junkyard in it for sure, though.
36:37
Yeah, I don't remember what happened to it.
36:40
And and yeah, so we put it all.
36:42
So but that was just like, hey, we're kids.
36:44
We just assume we do the transmission and just know we smoke the clutch
36:47
because we were doing terrible things and we didn't really know how to drive
36:50
at five speed. Yeah.
36:54
Yeah, it's not a nightmare job, but you know, considering we almost died
36:57
and we had to go by a lot of mission for no for no reason.
37:02
Cool. But yeah, like I like the nightmare stuff.
37:04
We'll have to make it an anniversary thing every Halloween will celebrate.
37:09
Are you ready to get a little?
37:10
Well, this could be scary, depending on how you view this vehicle.
37:13
Oh, it's time, my friend, a spooky vehicle could be out.
37:18
Maybe. It's a bit of a mystery vehicle.
37:22
Rolls Royce Specter.
37:24
Nineteen, nineteen eighty five, the Silver Ghost.
37:28
All right, you mind intro and the the the show?
37:31
Well, I pull up this this absolutely ghoulish ad.
37:33
This is what's going to happen.
37:34
So this is our print ad quiz game.
37:38
Oh, boy, in today's rousing edition,
37:41
Chadwick has already discovered a perhaps spooky advertisement
37:46
from the 80s, the 90s to the mid 2000s.
37:49
He's going to read and describe this advertisement.
37:53
He's got his glasses on.
37:55
We are aging out over here.
37:57
And part of this is I will then after he reads the ad,
38:01
I get three guesses to try and figure out the make model
38:04
and approximate model here of the vehicle at hand.
38:11
I get three guesses.
38:12
I get hints if and when I get some guesses.
38:15
Maybe long. Please play along at home.
38:17
It's a bunch of fun yell at me, calling me a clown and an idiot
38:21
and a fraud when when you know what it is and I don't.
38:27
Yes, this is interactive.
38:29
I'm ready. Hopefully you are ready.
38:31
Chadwick, what you got?
38:32
What you got? Let's do it.
38:33
So we got a two page ad for you today.
38:37
Driver's side three quarter in the African Savannah
38:42
with a giraffe to giraffe giraffe.
38:45
I don't know if you pluralize giraffe.
38:46
I don't do this. I think you do giraffes.
38:49
I think it's giraffes.
38:52
I don't think it's like dry like what you're a fair.
38:54
I think it's just giraffe like you would here.
38:58
I mean, they are long, dear.
38:59
I think that's what they are.
39:02
I prefer a John, dear.
39:04
But anyway, one of the one of the giraffes is looking at the vehicle.
39:10
Longingly, the headline, the H1 in the HTML world
39:14
is the most civilized way to leave civilization.
39:20
It's a fun one, man.
39:21
Introvert, disco one. Done.
39:25
Within the limits imposed by certain unalterable laws of physics,
39:29
the new blank has the going deep,
39:32
has the capabilities to go practically anywhere.
39:37
It has a tough box frame chassis strategically placed steel skid plates.
39:43
Sure. And convenient shift on the fly
39:47
for a real drive. OK.
39:49
A hostile environment on the outside,
39:51
however, only serves to accentuate how comfortable the environment is on the inside.
39:58
Amenities like leather, a power moonroof and heated seats ensure that
40:03
this is a vehicle well suited to an exclusive restaurant
40:08
as it is to an extended African safari. OK. Wow.
40:11
I'll do both of those.
40:13
And one that more than lives up to its luxury nameplate, Frank.
40:17
Ah, luxury nameplate. OK.
40:19
It's unique combination of strength and grace.
40:23
It's dedicated to the notion that your adventure should be wild and uncivilized,
40:27
but never your accommodations. Wow. OK.
40:31
This should pretty well written ad to be.
40:33
I'm into it so far. Yeah, I'm nearly sold.
40:36
I need some tech specs.
40:37
I think we have tech specs coming right up.
40:38
OK, good. This is good. All right.
40:41
Leather trimmed interior. Wow. OK.
40:43
Oversized power moonroof.
40:46
It did power front seats, theft deterrent system.
40:50
It doesn't prevent. It just deters. Oh, fair.
40:54
Shift on the fly for a drive.
40:58
One hundred and ninety horsepower.
41:00
This is what you've been waiting for.
41:01
B six single overhead cam.
41:03
Oh, oh, oh. Engine. Oh, OK.
41:06
Ninety point two cubic feet of cargo space.
41:10
Ninety point two cubic feet cargo space. OK.
41:14
The big one there was the hundred and ninety horsepower
41:16
B six of overhead cam motor.
41:17
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Frank.
41:19
Ten minutes on the clock.
41:20
What is the most civilized way to leave civilization?
41:25
Boy, great reflexively good ad.
41:30
I don't know if it's great, but it's good.
41:31
It's fucking great.
41:33
You see, here's the thing in my head.
41:34
I'm like, oh, boy, like this absolutely reads like.
41:39
Like Lexus Alex, it reads like, you know,
41:47
Discovery one, Discovery two, Range Rover, right?
41:50
Like this is again, luxury nameplate.
41:54
Motor does not does not fit the bill here.
42:00
Hundred and ninety horsepower.
42:04
We didn't get a displacement, but it's an overhead cam.
42:07
A sock, if you will.
42:09
It did say V six, V six.
42:14
Hundred and ninety horsepower.
42:15
So with a luxury, it has to be true to a luxury nameplate.
42:20
Allegedly. Correct.
42:23
So that leads me to think of.
42:27
This could be an accurate SLX,
42:30
but I think that three and a half liter
42:32
made more than one hundred and ninety horsepower.
42:34
I want to say it was two thirty or two fifty.
42:38
I think it's model year dependent.
42:42
Like I think it was two fifty in the V across.
42:45
I don't know if it wasn't the SLX.
42:47
There's a pretty robust engine for sure.
42:50
I want to say it made more than one hundred and ninety horsepower.
42:55
Luxury nameplate, that's making a body on frame SUV.
43:02
I would almost want to say like a
43:05
like a Land Rover Freelander,
43:07
because you have the two five V six.
43:11
Feels like a hundred and ninety horsepower would be about right.
43:14
Pretty sure those were unibody.
43:17
I don't think that's a body on frame vehicle.
43:20
But like, you know.
43:27
If this is an ML three twenty.
43:33
Ooh, that might be it.
43:37
It might be an ML three twenty.
43:40
But I want to say that made more than one hundred and ninety.
43:45
You know, that's a two hundred and twenty, two hundred and thirty horsepower motor.
43:49
I don't know if it was down tuned for the ML three twenty.
43:54
But that's a body on frame luxury nameplate.
43:59
Boy, that might be that might be my first stab.
44:03
You know, I'm going to go back.
44:04
So for now to get the ball rolling, I'm going to say that this is.
44:10
A nineteen ninety eight Acura SLX.
44:21
The most civilized way to leave civilization, the Acura SLX.
44:29
I thought it was more early.
44:31
So this is a ninety five the first year.
44:33
OK, they didn't have the three.
44:35
Was it not the three five?
44:36
Was it the three oh, I think it was a three oh to start.
44:39
The three five did the year you said ninety eight.
44:42
I think they did have the three five ninety eight ninety nine.
44:45
I know it was late nineties.
44:46
And that's when it went to, like you said, over two hundred and twenty horsepower.
44:49
So yeah, significant jump.
44:50
I'm one ninety is not bad for mid nineties, to be honest, though.
44:55
So and dual airbags was a big deal for ninety five.
44:59
And I was going to bring that up dual airbags.
45:03
We'll see the giraffeies.
45:05
Yeah, God, that's a slick.
45:08
So what do you what is your good job?
45:10
First off, thank you nailed it.
45:12
Thank you. What do you how do you feel about the SLX?
45:16
I would like to own an SLX.
45:18
Now, I know it's just in a Zuzu trooper with second gen leather trim.
45:23
It's a second gen trooper, though, which was a huge upgrade in luxury over the
45:28
five. Let me tell you. Yeah.
45:30
You know, I would like to.
45:33
Frankly, Mealy, I don't know.
45:36
I don't know if I know enough about the all the full breadth of
45:40
differentiation between a trooper and an SLX, right?
45:43
Like, I know like trim leather amenities and trim.
45:47
But like, you know, did they have like, you know,
45:50
softer rubber bushings in the various, you know, it's the same.
45:55
It's or did they add more sound deadening?
45:59
No, they, you know, like the the glass is glassier.
46:05
Like, I don't know.
46:06
Like maybe nicer leatherette. Right.
46:09
Yeah, like, you know, the woodgrain is there's more wood to the grain.
46:13
Like, I don't I don't know.
46:16
I don't we need we need one complete sidebar.
46:20
I had a brief conversation yesterday with a gal
46:24
who used to work in Mitsubishi and I talked to her.
46:27
I was like, you know, I used to have a galant VR four.
46:30
She was like, I I organized the launch event for that car.
46:34
And I was like, oh, we need to talk later.
46:36
And like, I need that is killer.
46:38
Yeah. Yeah. She works for a really cool charity.
46:40
She used to work for Singer and Ferrari.
46:42
And but she started at Mitsubishi in the 80s, 90s killer.
46:47
Yeah. So we need to get one.
46:49
I like them. I like them a lot because I a I'm already predisposed to like them
46:53
because I love troopers so much.
46:56
They look killer, like the they're still boxy.
46:59
The two tone, like you said, and you could get like a green or a blue or like
47:03
it in between. It was like, yeah, these these color combos were brilliant.
47:06
And they're proper. That's a proper.
47:08
And the ad is not fucking around.
47:10
These really can go anywhere.
47:11
These were pretty serious off-road rigs, to be honest.
47:15
Oh, I found I found two.
47:16
I just did a quick search and I found a pair of them on
47:20
one is trash on Facebook Marketplace.
47:22
One is trash trash and three hundred dollars.
47:27
I'll send you a link later.
47:28
This makes for terrible radio, but I found one for thirty five hundred
47:31
dollars here and sixty three thousand miles.
47:35
It actually looks really, really, really clean, Frank.
47:38
Yeah, I'm going to look at that one tomorrow.
47:40
OK. Are you serious?
47:42
Yeah, yeah, I'm dead serious.
47:43
That's the one in Citrus Heights.
47:44
I'm not even looking at Craig's list right now.
47:46
Marketplace, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, I talked to a guy.
47:48
I'm going to go check it out after work tomorrow.
47:49
Oh, bro, it looks so good.
47:51
There's some like door dings and stuff, but a PDR away from.
47:54
Yeah, look at like, look at like the left rear bumper.
47:57
Corner is no, no, no, I'm so I'm dog.
48:00
I'm fucking going there, dude.
48:02
So tomorrow. Yeah, it's really nice.
48:05
Can I be horny for you?
48:09
Dude, it looks so good.
48:11
Are we already? Are we already?
48:13
Are we already doing the?
48:15
Should it be? Should that be it?
48:17
The thirty five hundred dollar or under luxury?
48:20
Oh, yeah, that's a tough one.
48:23
I mean, you can get a lot of Land Rover and get some mercury
48:26
mountaineer up in this bitch.
48:27
Yeah, Land Rover products for sure.
48:29
You could probably get an LR three.
48:31
Yeah, but I wanted to work.
48:33
They work. I'd go disco to disco.
48:36
Oh, they're a little pricier now.
48:37
Have you been looking at the disco prices?
48:39
No, I haven't looked at disco in a while.
48:40
Don't do it. Yeah, they've gone up a little bit.
48:42
No, I would need to be more, more shitty sub brand, right?
48:46
Like I would need to do I mean, S.
48:48
Alex is like the king of that.
48:50
Dude, so the best thing is you need to mention the ad.
48:53
It's a ninety nine.
48:54
So I do get the three five with that.
48:55
Yeah, we'll see. I'm not getting too excited.
48:57
The dude is like a little iffy.
48:59
Sure. One that I mentioned that I said all that stuff.
49:01
And he's like, sure.
49:02
Well, sometimes that ends up being good, right?
49:04
You sell them. But yeah, no.
49:06
But like, I mean, like, you know, shitty bedside manner
49:09
might chase a bunch of people off.
49:11
You write the fact that it's an accurate S.
49:13
Alex, probably. Well, fair.
49:15
Yeah, this is not some like air cooled Porsche
49:17
where like I'm getting a good deal because I'm the only one
49:20
How good does it look, though?
49:22
It looks really good.
49:23
I know like greenish blue.
49:24
I've been so excited to just like I think it posted two days ago or something.
49:27
I messaged him immediately and I've kind of been working out.
49:29
But tomorrow I hope, dude, I hope I send you a picture
49:33
at a gas station with this this thing.
49:35
God, I'm trying to think I'm trying.
49:37
Oh, damn, you're getting like I'm just rolling down and here's like a.
49:41
Here's a rover at like 14 grand.
49:42
Told you. Yeah, it sucks, dude.
49:44
Yeah, but yeah, OK.
49:46
Well, no, I mean, I'm excited.
49:47
That's fun. I'm excited.
49:49
You know what I would do if, you know, honestly,
49:51
if we're going to play like honestly,
49:53
$3,500, $4,000 off-roader, that's kind of interesting.
49:56
I'd go for like a Honda Passport original first gen.
50:00
I think that's similar vein to this.
50:03
I mean, it's genuine.
50:04
It's about as literally you can get.
50:05
Yeah, rodeo with the Honda badge.
50:07
I like how those look, by the way.
50:09
I think they look killer.
50:13
Yeah, you know what?
50:13
I would need to get a JDM.
50:17
What was it called?
50:18
Where they rebadged,
50:19
they rebadged the original discovery as a Honda in Japan.
50:24
I forgot what it's called.
50:25
I know exactly what you're talking about.
50:26
Yeah, it's like very clearly a discovery,
50:30
but with like a Honda grill,
50:31
like a great Honda grill on it.
50:33
So I know you were saying it,
50:35
but this this is essentially a trooper.
50:37
I think they just changed the badging
50:39
and I think they upgraded the interior materials.
50:41
They didn't change anything mechanically.
50:43
So what I do is mechanically,
50:45
I know it's no, I'm talking like didn't touch bushings,
50:48
didn't adjust anything to feel different.
50:50
You know what I'm saying?
50:51
Sometimes they'll adjust the suspension like rates.
50:53
Nope, it's a trooper second gen trooper.
50:56
Man, all right, you get that.
50:58
I'll get a Mazda Navajo and I like that.
51:02
Yeah, it was fucking really good.
51:04
Yeah, we'll have we'll have like a rebadge.
51:07
That should be it, just rebadge SUV.
51:09
Good, those two would look great together, by the way.
51:12
They would, I mean, the side would be pretty significant.
51:17
But they kind of have the same like style though.
51:20
So they look kind of period.
51:23
They never made, help me out here.
51:25
They never made a Mercury mountaineer
51:28
from the first gen.
51:31
Did not explore, right?
51:32
Only the second gen?
51:33
So you had Explorer and then Navajo
51:36
and then Navajo went away and you had everything.
51:40
God, how sick would it have been
51:42
if they made a Lincoln first gen Explorer?
51:45
Could have been dope.
51:46
Could have been really dope.
51:47
Interior would have been awesome.
51:49
It would have been plush.
51:50
It felt like the Lincoln, I don't know, John Wilkes.
51:53
Like I don't know what you would call it like.
51:55
I mean, that's probably their first thing.
51:56
That's probably their first thing.
51:59
Yeah, yeah, the Mary Todd.
52:01
I think you got it.
52:02
Well, anyway, not to bury the lead,
52:03
but yeah, I'm gonna go check that bad boy out tomorrow.
52:05
Hopefully he hasn't sent me the address.
52:06
It's one of those weird guys,
52:07
like I'll send it to you tomorrow.
52:09
Well, you can send it to me now.
52:11
Like he thinks you're like, he's gonna wake up
52:13
and you're gonna be like sleeping in the car
52:16
I've come for your SLX.
52:19
When that thing popped up, I'm like, yep.
52:23
Question, does that mean you have
52:25
Acura SLX as a saved search?
52:28
Of course, you know I do.
52:29
That's fucking good.
52:31
You fucking know me, bro.
52:33
Right, right, right.
52:34
Do you think they've, I'm gonna look real quick
52:36
because this again, this makes for fantastic audio.
52:39
Do you think Cars and Bids or Bring a Trailer
52:42
has ever sold an Acura SLX?
52:44
If I was gonna venture, I guess
52:45
I think Cars and Bids might have run one.
52:48
I just look, Cars and Bids
52:49
has not sold an Acura SLX.
52:53
Bring a Trailer, I search Acura SLX
52:56
and it just gives me a Zuzu Trooper results.
52:58
Like it doesn't even, it just, that's what you get.
53:02
I know they're pretty fucking rare.
53:03
I know they've sold one.
53:06
Here it is, a 96 SLX, 63,000 miles.
53:12
Oh, red over gold, which is cool.
53:15
Is that a good two-tone cloth interior?
53:19
What do you think it sold for?
53:20
190 horsepower, which we know.
53:23
It probably sold for like 7,800 bucks.
53:29
So you need to get yourself on this SLX.
53:31
Yeah, this one has 163,000,
53:33
so probably not gonna get there for that kind of value,
53:37
It is nice looking.
53:40
It's honestly becoming my fishing rig if I grab it,
53:42
so I need some more beater-ish.
53:45
Yeah, I mean, I have that in my Suburban, but.
53:49
And I have to get into fishing, I suppose,
53:51
if that's what I'm gonna do, but.
53:52
It's an easy thing to get into, my friend.
53:55
Well, Mike, the kid, today and yesterday,
54:00
he's like, I really wanna go fishing,
54:01
I really wanna go fishing, and I'm not a fisher,
54:04
I'm not against it, like, don't care.
54:07
But I'm like, okay, yeah, let's do it.
54:09
And so like, maybe we need to do this.
54:11
We need to do a fishing rig adventure situation.
54:13
And we've got enough rods and reels,
54:15
and plus Teddy's like, literally the same age as your son.
54:18
Literally, like, I think it's a week apart,
54:20
so we could make that happen, man.
54:22
And we could go in the SLX, how cool would that be?
54:25
You take the SLX, I'll take my Mazda Navajo
54:28
that I've yet to locate.
54:29
And yeah, we will do this, I'm into it.
54:34
I support you in this Tom Fullery.
54:38
Well, let's celebrate.
54:39
You did nail that, dude.
54:41
If anyone's gonna come out of the woodwork
54:42
with an Acura SLX first-turn rip.
54:45
Oh, you got the money gun loaded?
54:47
Oh, you fucking know it.
54:49
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
54:51
We need more money for the money gun.
54:52
It's got 10 bucks in it.
54:54
I know, we need more than that.
54:55
We need, I don't know.
54:58
Well, when we start plugging our Patreon,
54:59
we can make, please, oh.
55:02
Please fund the money gun, the make it rain gun.
55:06
Like, we should have an, a dollar.
55:07
I assume, here's the thing, I assume.
55:09
Well, no, I assume on Patreon that, I mean,
55:13
obviously, like, I'm sure you just like,
55:14
sign up with your credit card or PayPal or whatever.
55:18
I don't know, do you think there's a way
55:18
where you can be like,
55:19
send individual bills every month?
55:22
Like mail five singles to this new box.
55:25
Not only do I don't believe that's a thing,
55:27
I think they are vehemently against that policy,
55:30
sending cash to them.
55:31
You're right, actually, because I bet you,
55:32
because it probably cuts Patreon out of the deal.
55:35
So then I get their cut.
55:37
How about we celebrate your victory,
55:39
not just with dollar bills, with PCP, man.
55:41
Project, car, progress.
55:44
Frank, have you done any wrenching?
55:45
Oh boy, not really.
55:48
All I'm going to do is,
55:50
I still have all of the things.
55:52
I might be getting another other car in here.
55:57
We talked about it.
56:01
Robert Epley, friend of the podcast,
56:03
has his Shipbox Triumph.
56:06
We talked about briefly before.
56:08
We've just been, we've been ships passing in the night,
56:11
but hopefully this week I will get it over here.
56:14
I did discover it's got $500 in back due DMV on it,
56:17
which might be roughly 40% of the value of the car.
56:22
So we'll see what happens there.
56:27
There's kind of no way around dealing with that
56:30
because we also don't have a title.
56:32
So to get a title, you got to pay the fees.
56:34
So you got to pay to play.
56:35
So that's what we're figuring out there.
56:39
I'm hoping as early as real world tomorrow,
56:42
not podcast world tomorrow,
56:45
by the time you listen to this,
56:46
hopefully it will be sorted out.
56:48
But that's in waiting in the wings.
56:52
I finally also got in the actual,
56:56
for the umpteenth attempt,
56:59
the actual bushing, not bushing,
57:05
torque arm transmission mount for the Sprint Turbo.
57:11
A few weeks ago, it was like, okay, I got the one in,
57:15
it's bad, like the bushing is kind of tearing
57:18
out of its mount already.
57:21
It feels squishier and softer and worse
57:23
than the bad one I'm taking out of the car.
57:27
I made the exact, I'm gonna return it.
57:31
I paid an extra like $8 to like overnight the new one.
57:35
It still took two fucking weeks.
57:37
So we went back, right?
57:38
And I was like, hey, like, did they call me?
57:40
And so I was like, hey, like, it's $8.
57:44
I'm not gonna like be upset about it,
57:47
but like I paid extra money to get it two days
57:51
instead of eight days and it took 15 days.
57:56
Can I get that money back?
57:58
And then I was like, oh yeah, yeah, no,
57:59
that makes sense for sure.
58:01
And he's like fighting his computer
58:02
and he's like, oh, it won't let me,
58:04
can I just like give you a $10 like auto zone gift card?
58:09
I'll put in the computer that you gave me a battery core
58:14
and I'm giving you a $10 merchandise credit
58:16
That dude's getting fired.
58:18
I'm like, sure, that's fine.
58:19
Like, I don't care.
58:21
Okay, yeah, cause I can't...
58:23
Then I was like, wait, you just buy cores
58:27
even if I don't have a core return.
58:29
Like I can just show up at the battery core
58:32
and you'll give me $10 at least and store credit for it.
58:35
He's like, oh yeah, yeah, we buy cores.
58:39
I just like, there's two over here.
58:42
I have a couple on my side yard.
58:43
I have one, God, I have one in something.
58:47
I'm gonna like pull out.
58:48
Frank's got a dozen of them in the stream,
58:49
but I'm gonna just roll in and just be like,
58:51
give me $50 and store credit dog
58:53
for these like absolute disaster-ish shithouse batteries.
58:58
So yeah, that's it.
58:59
Other than like, I'm still kind of redoing the garage.
59:02
This is the new, I got a new toolbox over here.
59:04
Heavily discounted at the local Home Depot.
59:09
It was like 300 bucks.
59:10
Oh shit, that's a good deal.
59:11
Like a Husky, whatever.
59:14
So I'm gonna stuff it between these two cabinets.
59:17
And yeah, hopefully put a lift in here.
59:23
Maybe sooner than later,
59:25
the background will have a lift back there.
59:28
That would be cool.
59:29
It'd be cool to see like a,
59:30
like the bottom half of a car like up here
59:33
because there's something elevated back up over there.
59:37
Well, at least you did PCP.
59:39
I literally did PCP that yielded no positive results.
59:43
You did the drug PCP.
59:44
I did, well, that's the first problem
59:47
is I started with the real drug PCP
59:48
before I tried my project car progress.
59:52
Sorry to interrupt.
59:53
You're not getting anything done
59:55
other than hopefully tomorrow buying a car.
59:59
Should that be after dark episode number one?
00:02
We actually try actual PCP.
00:05
We're not dying on the first episode.
00:07
That's a patriotic, full positive.
00:09
But maybe 50, like what's, like how many?
00:15
No, no, I'm saying like how many bonus episodes
00:18
like after dark late night confidential episodes
00:21
is it that we, till we, is it once a year?
00:23
Once a year we try a new drug that we've never done before.
00:26
We're not earning enough.
00:27
Which in my case is kind of all of them.
00:28
Yeah, we're not earning enough for PCP.
00:30
We're not even making crack money.
00:32
No, but I'm saying is hopefully in a year.
00:34
Oh, meh, let's, let's.
00:36
We can at least, PCP is pretty, I assume.
00:40
I don't know any, like, I can like.
00:42
We can get edibles.
00:43
I don't know anyone who can get PCP.
00:48
Do you have a guy who knows that?
00:49
We can, of course, but we can legitimately do an episode
00:53
on edibles, that'd be fine.
00:54
But I did actually get some work done.
00:56
It just didn't result in anything.
00:57
So the Volvo airbag light.
00:59
Sprinting in place.
01:01
The vein of my existence.
01:02
I finally got a Volvo scan tool,
01:05
which is cool because I can go in create.
01:07
Volvos are pretty complex, even in the early to mid 2000s.
01:10
The safety features.
01:11
Volvo's always been a pioneer in the field.
01:14
What's the acronym?
01:17
Isn't there like an acronym, like on the, on the,
01:19
like the B pillar, it's like the S.I.
01:21
It's not SIDS, but it's something like that.
01:23
Like the side impact.
01:24
It's the opposite of the SIDS that keeps you alive.
01:27
It's like SIPs, S-I-P-S, right?
01:29
Oh yeah, it is SIPs.
01:31
So you go in there and I see what the thing is.
01:34
It's like a high resistance on the seat belt tensioner
01:38
on the driver's side.
01:40
So, which could be one of five million things.
01:42
So I start tearing apart the B pillar.
01:44
I hate messing with plastics.
01:46
We talk about this all the time.
01:48
I take every connector off and clean it
01:49
because a dirty connector kicks that light up more times
01:52
and not, or you had something loose disconnected
01:54
while you connected the battery back up
01:56
and that light will stay permanently
01:59
until you fix the issue and then reset it again.
02:02
I went under the seat, unbolted the driver's seat,
02:05
As you know from me redoing the passenger seat,
02:07
there are five million connectors under this seat
02:10
from 2005, which wasn't the connect,
02:12
yeah, usually like 4.98 million.
02:16
So I took every one out,
02:17
painted the dick on doing all those connectors
02:19
in a weird cramped space, cleaned them,
02:21
put it all back together.
02:22
Everything's testing test of resistance
02:23
like I'm supposed to on every fucking connection.
02:26
Perfect resistance.
02:27
I'm like, okay, cool.
02:29
Maybe the cleaning helped.
02:30
Put it all back together, reset the light,
02:33
the airbag light goes off,
02:35
but airbag light comes right back,
02:36
comes right back, SRS issue.
02:38
I'm like, I just want to die.
02:40
So it could be the pretensioner for the seatbelt,
02:42
which is a safety feature.
02:43
If you get in an accident,
02:44
it tightens your seatbelt instantly.
02:46
Sometimes those fail over time
02:48
and you lose that ability,
02:49
you can't tell you lost that ability
02:50
until you get in an accident.
02:52
So I might just fucking just wing it
02:55
and try to buy a used known good pretensioner.
02:59
They're like 80 bucks and it's a pain in the dick.
03:02
I don't know where I'm at with that.
03:06
It's just how much time do I want to keep
03:07
putting into this little thing?
03:08
Obviously the car work, everything works.
03:10
It's not an airbag isn't going to deploy issue.
03:12
It's just the tensioner.
03:14
The tensioner's gaining some resistance fault
03:16
in the wiring and I didn't see any damaged wires.
03:19
I'm chasing my tail on this one.
03:21
It's taking way too much time,
03:23
but Volvo safety, God bless it, right?
03:27
Yeah, until you get like an airbag deploy
03:29
in your skull because of a SOS fault or Sims fault or whatever.
03:34
Yeah, this light has nothing to do with the airbag.
03:36
So it's like, it's not a safety concern,
03:37
which is like what I was really worried about
03:39
when the passenger seat was cut out by a knife wielding,
03:43
I don't even know, tweaker.
03:45
But yeah, that's all I got.
03:46
So chasing that issue,
03:47
but I just want to point out that like,
03:49
I think I'd rather do a time and belt job
03:51
than take apart an inferior and start messing with like,
03:54
I don't know, fucking sensors and wiring.
03:57
That's a goddamn nightmare.
04:03
Yeah, it's frustrating.
04:05
Yeah, it's just, I don't,
04:11
because yeah, what do you do?
04:12
Like, we were just discussing about the parts cannon, right?
04:17
And unless you have extreme,
04:22
heavy specific diagnostic tools and scan tools,
04:27
and even then they can lead you down in a wrong direction.
04:32
And I'm not taking my $2,000 rally car
04:34
to a fucking Volvo dealer to have them run up
04:36
like four hours of diagnostic work to say,
04:38
it could be this and it could be this,
04:40
because that's what it ends up being
04:41
with these complicated systems.
04:42
Well, we're going to start with like four hours of dyag
04:44
and then we're going to...
04:46
At that point, I'll just swap out the tensioner
04:48
and see it's worth the shot, right?
04:51
All right, we're over, we're over on time.
04:53
Take us home, I'm really depressed.
04:56
If you have dreadful or fantastic
05:02
legal or illegal car story questions or questions,
05:09
answers to questions, questions to answers,
05:11
things to tell us, stories to tell,
05:13
just hop on the Instagram machine and send us a message
05:18
without outlying what the story is.
05:21
We're going to do Instagram for now.
05:23
I think there's like weird character limit shit,
05:25
so we'll probably do something different in the future.
05:29
But yeah, we'll figure that out.
05:30
Even just send us a message saying like,
05:32
I've got a cool story and in your email address
05:35
and we'll get you hooked up,
05:36
but we want to collect some of those.
05:38
So hopefully in a month or two,
05:40
we will have a small collection.
05:41
So once a week, we can be like,
05:42
hey, check out this story from Bob Anonymous
05:44
or Sally Tootix or whomever.
05:48
We'll give you a clever alias.
05:50
None of those were clever,
05:51
but we'll make a clever one for you.
05:55
If you want to stalk me, you should or shouldn't,
05:58
but that's the photographer's garage, Instagram,
06:02
a splash on YouTube.
06:03
But most importantly, just keep coming back here.
06:06
Another pointless automotive podcast.
06:08
I get to talk more off the cuff here than elsewhere.
06:16
Chadwick, if somebody wants to send you grotesque
06:22
very forward messages to you or see what you're up to,
06:26
how do they do that?
06:28
Frank's restraining order threats are fucking hollow
06:31
and weak, just that stock away.
06:35
With me, I will, dude, I'll open my arms up invitingly.
06:40
I bring it on, bring your stocking.
06:42
No, if you want to find out how I survive
06:46
or don't survive the track or EGR issues
06:49
and the Volvo airbag issues, tune into Auto Obscure Garage
06:52
for all your rescues, restorations and reviews.
06:55
You can watch me hating life right now.
06:57
I'm so excited for your SLX content coming up.
07:00
Oh, don't curse it, man.
07:03
Yeah, I'm feeling, I'm very, very iffy on this one.
07:05
But yeah, in Homeboy opened a profile,
07:09
just one item for sale ever.
07:10
He's done three posts in three years.
07:13
It's not good, but we'll see.
07:16
We live dangerously, but yeah.
07:18
Like Frank said, tell us your stories.
07:20
We love you and we'll see you in, I don't know, seven days.
07:24
Yeah, that sounds good.
07:25
All right, until then, enjoy Turkey.
07:30
Oh yeah, Thanksgiving.
07:31
Wait, you've already enjoyed Turkey.
07:36
Have leftovers, make a sandwich.
07:40
As the late great, I'm already fluttering here.
07:45
I'm already fluttering here.
07:46
It's okay, we're totally on time.
07:48
That's the late great Warren Zavon once said,
07:51
enjoy every sandwich.
