00:05
Hey, Tom, we've got a really fun show today because we have three of the most popular
00:11
three-row SUVs in America.
00:14
And two of these have a little bit of flair to them, and one of them has got a lot of
00:18
So what we're looking at here is the 2026 Toyota Grand Highlander in the Platinum configuration.
00:25
Next to that is the Ford Explorer Tremor, which is all new for 2026.
00:29
And next to that is another new car, the Hyundai Palisade XRT Pro.
00:34
Yeah, the great thing is, in this video slash podcast, we're going to go hands-on.
00:38
We're going to kind of crawl through them.
00:40
We're going to describe what we're seeing, and then we're going to take them for a ride
00:42
and see how they drive.
00:44
So if you're there looking for a three-row, or if you're just three-row curious, this
00:50
Yeah, now look, two of these cars are the off-road trims.
00:53
One of them is not, but we're not doing any off-road in a day.
00:55
We're talking about what these things are like on the road and what they're like to
00:59
Plus, Toyota doesn't do a woodland variant of the Grand Highlander.
01:04
So if you want an off-road one currently, there's no way to get that in the Grand Highlander.
01:08
But the reason we're focusing on the Grand Highlander and not the normal one is, the
01:11
normal one is ancient.
01:12
We believe it's about to be phased out or replaced.
01:15
And the Grand Highlander is a huge seller for Toyota.
01:18
This thing has been a massive hit in the three-row crossover segment.
01:21
Yeah, so let's start with it.
01:22
Why don't we start with it?
01:24
I think this is an interesting vehicle.
01:26
Of course, Toyota also makes a Lexus version of it called the TX.
01:30
And I first got my hands on this a couple of years ago with Andre back in Hawaii, and
01:35
It's a really popular vehicle because it's somewhat affordable and it's kind of the size
01:42
And what you're going to find, especially when we take a peek in the trunk, is the sheer
01:45
amount of space that the Grand Highlander offers that in some way dwarfs the other two.
01:50
So this really is an American-sized three-row SUV.
01:54
Now, what do you think of this color, Dad?
01:55
This ruby-flare red.
01:57
Well, I thought it was the Soul Crystal Metallic that Mazda does on their Toyota.
02:01
But I have a bone to pick with this car, Tommy.
02:05
I think it's confusing because the Grand Highlander and the Highlander are, in fact, two different
02:11
And yet, because they have the same name, people get them confused.
02:14
Well, one of them is Grand.
02:16
It's the bigger one.
02:17
One of the three-row.
02:18
But they're actually very...
02:20
But they're very different.
02:21
They're in different chassis.
02:22
They don't share a lot of components.
02:23
But this is the Grand one, right?
02:26
It's not the normal one.
02:28
Now, one thing I think you're going to notice across multiple of these vehicles...
02:31
The price is Grand, too.
02:32
It's actually pretty good value.
02:34
We'll talk about it near the end of this.
02:36
But one of the things you're going to notice is that the mustache is in.
02:39
So, see, multiple of these cars come equipped with the mustache.
02:43
So here in the Toyota, it's chrome.
02:44
On the Ford, it's yellow.
02:46
But this seems to be like a new design trend.
02:49
Our people putting mustaches in between the headlights of their new cars.
02:54
How about on the Hyundai?
02:55
No, the Hyundai is mustache less.
02:57
So there's no mustache on that.
02:59
But of course, the Toyota has the huge front grille, which is so prevalent these days.
03:05
And then this car's got a lot of chrome on it.
03:07
So this is the platinum spec.
03:09
This is like the very fancy ones.
03:10
You see chrome along the front.
03:12
You see chrome in the belt line.
03:13
You see some bright work up here on the roof.
03:15
But I think as a whole, it's a pretty attractive car.
03:17
My favorite part about this is actually out back where unlike the other two, this has got the big and bold exhaust tips.
03:26
I would say, Tommy, the chrome is out though.
03:29
Toyota is kind of, you know, very conservative.
03:31
So they're still doing a lot of bright work.
03:32
But if you look on the other two, there is no chrome anywhere.
03:35
And I do like the exhaust.
03:37
Yeah, those are the off-road versions.
03:39
So, you know, for some reason, off-road and chrome are incompatible.
03:45
But certainly on the nice ones like this platinum spec, the chrome is everywhere.
03:48
But let's pop the hood and talk about the engine.
03:52
So there's a couple of different powertrains available in the Grand Highlander.
03:57
There's the Corpse Grand Highlander Hybrid, which uses what I believe is a 2.5 NA.
04:02
Did you know every Toyota can be had as a hybrid now?
04:06
Yeah, that is interesting.
04:07
Well, not every Toyota.
04:10
You're missing two.
04:11
Not the sports Toyotas.
04:13
Well, those are Toyotas.
04:14
The 86, of course, can't be a hybrid.
04:18
But outside of that, every passenger Toyota that's not a sports car comes as a hybrid.
04:23
Yeah, that's pretty cool.
04:24
So this is the Hybrid Max Power Train.
04:26
So this is a 2.4-liter turbo mated to the hybrid system with the E-all-wheel drive, which means
04:31
there's no driveshaft.
04:34
I think it's like 400 pound-feet of torque.
04:36
So it's a ton of torque in this.
04:38
But what's cool about this, hybrid but no CVT.
04:41
This retains a six-speed torque converter automatic, which is great to see.
04:46
Yeah, you know, there's a, Jason just did a good video from Engineering Explained, where
04:52
he basically showed people what a planetary gear set is.
04:56
Because CVTs, thanks to Nissan in part, have gotten a bad reputation because they had that,
05:01
you know, a couple years, more than a couple years, where the CVTs failed.
05:05
And as an enthusiast, we don't like CVTs because they kind of drone on.
05:09
And so the manufacturers are now going to planetary gear sets.
05:14
But Jason, this good video explaining what it was and how it's different.
05:17
But I'm of the thought that if it quacks like a duck, and if it swims like a duck, whether
05:22
it's a planetary gear set or a pulley, it's a duck.
05:25
In other words, it's a CVT.
05:27
And I don't love them because they still end up droning on.
05:29
And so I'm happy that Toyota didn't go that route with this car.
05:32
Except one duck costs a huge amount of money after 80,000 miles to replace.
05:37
And the other duck doesn't cost money.
05:39
So it may be a similar duck, but they're not the same in terms of maintenance costs.
05:42
No, they're very different.
05:44
Now, if you get the standard Grand Highlander, I do believe it has that planetary gear set.
05:48
But this one is a conventional, like I said, six-speed auto.
05:51
And this is really the primary buying factor in this car.
05:54
It's a fuel economy at 27, which doesn't seem that high until you realize that Explorer
05:58
is 19 MPG combined.
06:01
And that's a huge difference in the cabin.
06:02
Well, it's got a three-liter turbo, though, too, six-cylinder.
06:05
Yeah, but this is still 362 horsepower.
06:07
I mean, it's still a powerful vehicle.
06:09
It's only down 38 horsepower over the Ford.
06:12
So it's still pretty powerful.
06:13
It makes me want to drag race some, Tommy, to find out just how powerful it is.
06:17
Well, the Hyundai would lose, because that's got 287 horsepower.
06:21
But I want to show the trunk space in this car.
06:24
I mean, let's face it.
06:25
These are the most utilitarian vehicles outside of pickup trucks in the car world, where it's
06:32
What about minivans?
06:34
I always forget minivans.
06:35
There's too many of you out there, I suspect.
06:38
So what's great about this car is it's got by far the biggest trunk of the three, up
06:42
to 98 cubic feet, when all three rows are folded down.
06:46
And it's got some pretty clever little features back here.
06:49
For example, this blue view blocker, which I can.
06:52
It does something very clever.
06:54
I'm sure I won't be able to demonstrate it now that the camera's rolling.
06:58
So it's got these little feet on both ends that collapse into each other, which I think
07:04
is quite handy, because that means that there's now a cubby underneath the floor to store this
07:13
I haven't done it properly.
07:17
Well, you just got to believe me.
07:19
But if I was smarter, and the camera wasn't rolling, it does clip in a place there.
07:25
And this car, even though it's a hybrid, does come with a space saver spare tire.
07:29
So that's a great feature as well.
07:30
Where's the tire at?
07:31
It's underneath the cubby.
07:33
Underneath the cubby.
07:33
You can see the jack for it right there.
07:35
And then it lives underneath here.
07:37
And then three rows.
07:38
What I also like about this is these are still manual, which is the best way to move a seat.
07:43
So they come up and down really easily, and they even have some recline.
07:47
Dad, you want to crawl back there?
07:48
Yeah, I was going to crawl back here.
07:49
Actually, the second row really easily moves out of the way.
07:52
This is always a challenge in three rows, right?
07:54
How hard or easy is it to get at the three row?
07:56
And this basically just with one clip just slides out of the way like that.
08:01
And then it has this pretty wide opening for the third row.
08:05
Now the downside of third rows, especially in hybrids, is that the battery lives underneath
08:09
the floor here often.
08:10
And so your knees come up into your face.
08:12
But this one's not too bad.
08:14
I mean, they're not in my face, but they're not exactly uncomfortable.
08:19
Let's move this back.
08:20
Let's see if I can actually fit back here.
08:23
Yeah, it's not bad, dude.
08:25
The bedroom isn't horrible either.
08:27
Even if you're like 6'2".
08:29
Yeah, you got a pretty good handle.
08:29
And I've got a really weird torso.
08:32
So I'm kind of the worst example.
08:34
And this one, being platinum, has these really nice brown seats, which look very cool.
08:39
Captain's chair is back here with the fold down armrests.
08:41
And then this whole center console lifts out of the way if you want even more accessibility
08:47
Plus, check this out.
08:48
Heated and ventilated second row seats, USB-C ports.
08:52
And then this is awesome.
08:53
1500 watts of charging.
08:55
So when we check out that Ford in a sec, you're going to find that's 150 watts in that car
09:01
So if you're looking for like a camping rig, this might not be a bad option.
09:04
So there are some nice features back here.
09:05
I have vents, which is nice.
09:08
I have four cup holders.
09:10
And I have two USB-C ports, which is also nice.
09:14
So, you know, if I'm going to be a kiddo and I'm going to be playing with my, well,
09:17
I would say Angry Birds, but that's probably long out, isn't it, Tommy?
09:20
That's probably not what kids are doing these days.
09:24
Anyway, if I've got my iPad or phone and I need some power, power and, and juice drinks,
09:31
How about heated seats up there?
09:32
That's pretty cool too.
09:34
And third row climate and ventilation.
09:36
I actually just downloaded Angry Birds again.
09:38
Yeah, they've ruined it.
09:40
It's like an ad cesspool now.
09:42
You can't go more than a level without a blasting like a minute of ads and you can't play it
09:48
I think that's what killed websites.
09:49
Have you ever tried going to like a news website and you get 1500 pop-ups for like
09:53
extension cords because you haven't mentioned to your wife that you need an extension cord?
09:56
I'm really mad at the Angry Bird people because Angry Birds was the greatest app ever to exist.
10:05
Do you remember that app?
10:07
I was just reading about it.
10:09
The one that was the I Am Rich app.
10:12
Do you remember this?
10:13
It came out in 2008 and it was only on for like a couple months before the app store moved
10:18
But it was $999 and all it did is you opened it and it did nothing.
10:23
It just was like you bought it to prove you could afford a $900 app and then Apple thought
10:27
that was dumb and moved it.
10:28
Those were the days.
10:29
I think that's like those vanity phones that people buy just to show them that they can
10:33
afford a more expensive phone than an Android or an iPhone.
10:36
Alright, should we hop in and check out the inside?
10:38
Let's look at the business side of this.
10:41
I'm a big sucker fan for these like cappuccino interiors.
10:48
And you're talking about the price earlier.
10:51
I actually don't think this is very bad value coming in at $61,000.
10:56
So yeah, it's a lot of money, but when you consider, you know, really nice seven-seater,
11:02
heated ventilated second row, sunshades, three-row climate control, 1500-watt on-board power
11:07
and a hybrid for $61.
11:09
But my understanding is it's not too bad.
11:11
Well, considering I just reviewed a $42,000 Honda Prelude, which barely had four seats,
11:16
really two and a half, then you get seven seats for $61.
11:19
If you're doing the math by how many seats you get per dollar, then this certainly is
11:24
And manufactured in Indiana.
11:27
Alright, let me turn it out of the sun here so Cole's not shooting into the sun.
11:32
A big pan of sunroof in this model.
11:34
You can see, there we go, one touch operation.
11:38
It's going to glide on open.
11:40
And then here, let me put it.
11:41
I like these rubberized knobs for the climate control.
11:45
I think that's a really nice touch.
11:46
Yeah, it's pretty good, right?
11:47
Yeah, heated and cooled seats, which is also nice.
11:50
Real vents, Tommy Wahoo.
11:52
And I also think you'll like this.
11:53
This kind of bronze finish that they put across the finishes, I think looks really, really nice.
11:59
It's not just normal silver.
12:00
So there's some good things.
12:01
Look, you have your own USB-C over there.
12:03
Yeah, I'm not sure you put it out of the sun.
12:05
I think I've done a little bit of a better job.
12:07
You could do better than that because there's a big, there you go.
12:10
Now it's out of the sun.
12:11
Now you can see the dashboard.
12:14
So yeah, leather wrapped steering wheel, paddle shifters for that six-speed automatic.
12:18
Of course, the latest and greatest in Toyota safety systems, adaptive cruise, lane centering,
12:22
blind spot monitoring, that kind of thing.
12:24
Heated steering wheel, heated seats, ventilated seats.
12:26
Heated wiper panel, which is great.
12:29
This is, I think, a 15 and a bit inch screen, which is massive.
12:32
You said heated wiper panel.
12:34
Isn't that just the front defroster?
12:35
No, it's got these little things built into where the wipers rest.
12:40
Oh, so it warms up the wipers.
12:42
Now, we do have different drive modes, if you noticed.
12:45
So even though this is not an off-road spec vehicle, there is mud and sand, rock and dirt mode,
12:50
along with normal EcoSport and snow.
12:53
And there's even a hill descent control built in here.
12:55
So if you want to go tackle your trails, you probably shouldn't, but you could.
12:58
360-degree camera looks nice and crispy in there.
13:02
Bunch of different angles that you can use and see as well.
13:05
So they've done a really good job with this.
13:06
Yeah, a couple years ago, Ford updated their infotainment, and it's, I mean, Ford,
13:10
thinking of the Explorer already, to update it to their infotainment.
13:14
And it's much better.
13:15
I think it's much more intuitive.
13:17
It doesn't look like something from an old navigation system from the 1990s.
13:22
Yeah, they've done a really good job.
13:23
Yeah, they did a good job.
13:24
I'm not sure I love the steering wheel with all the buttons.
13:30
It's a little confusing.
13:30
But they're physical.
13:33
They're not haptic stuff.
13:35
Yeah, so that's really good.
13:36
And these are physical buttons, too.
13:37
Look at all these buttons over here for climate control and that kind of thing.
13:43
So they've done a really nice job, I think, with the interior on this Highlander.
13:47
And that's really the highlight for me is just the comfort that this car provides.
13:51
And for those of you who are big key fans, I kind of don't like the key.
13:54
It feels like, it feels kind of budget.
13:57
So it's this little plastic-y kind of fobby thing.
13:59
Back here it's a little nicer because it's got the Grand Highlander inscribed.
14:03
But the front is very much a basic Toyota.
14:05
Whether you get this or a Tundra or a Tacoma, you're going to get the same key.
14:08
And I kind of like having a nice key.
14:11
It's really good, though.
14:12
You feel these were on this bumpy dirt road here, soaking up the bumps really well with
14:16
that independent suspension all around.
14:18
Well, you're going to have a long wheelbase, which is always going to, you know, that's
14:20
why school buses are so comfortable.
14:22
I don't think school buses is exactly that.
14:28
I mean, none of them are comfortable because all the seats are crap.
14:31
But in terms of ride, they do glide across the pavement.
14:34
Well, I don't think a school bus is the height of luxury.
14:37
I said tour bus, okay?
14:39
Is a tour bus the height of luxury?
14:41
No, but it's the height of, like, long wheelbase comfortable ride quality.
14:44
Why didn't you say an S-Class?
14:46
Why did you have to say a bus?
14:47
Because it's a good example of a long wheelbase, Tommy.
14:50
Yeah, but the ride is bad in a bus.
14:53
The ride is incredible in a bus.
14:54
Like, you feel one, if you feel a bump, you'll feel it on the front wheels.
14:58
And then 20 minutes, you'll feel it on the back because it takes a long board to actually
15:01
I don't know if I've ever been in a tour bus.
15:03
So I'm not sure I can.
15:04
You've been in a tour bus.
15:05
Comment on the ride quality of your Led Zeppelin tour bus.
15:09
Didn't you go to semester seed?
15:11
Well, that was a ship, which is fundamentally different.
15:13
Sailing around the world and hanging on tour buses and going to Vietnam or Japan or where
15:17
There was no tour busing.
15:21
The boat had a good ride.
15:23
The rickshaw would be the exact opposite.
15:24
If you wanted to do an analogy for a very bad ride, then a rickshaw would be it because
15:28
I don't think it has suspension, does it?
15:30
I'm not very well versed on the ins and outs of rickshaw suspension.
15:34
But this is better than a rickshaw, but not as good as a ship.
15:38
So there's our ride comparison.
15:40
Well, that's the entertainment portion of your video slash podcast.
15:43
Let's get back to the review part.
15:45
Look, I do have one issue with this.
15:50
Well, yeah, but that's what people want.
15:52
Yeah, I know, right?
15:53
But there's not a lot of like fizz in here.
15:55
Well, you haven't dialed it in the sport mode.
15:57
Oh, is that going to make it fizzier?
15:59
Okay, we'll do a quick acceleration test up here.
16:01
You go see how quick it is.
16:02
Yeah, so we'll do three people.
16:04
We're going uphill a little bit, but let's go see what this thing accelerates like.
16:08
See if there's any fizz in this pop.
16:09
Oh, there's some fizz.
16:11
Here comes the fizz.
16:13
I'm ready for the fizz.
16:24
The only fizzy thing was that thing you couldn't put it away.
16:29
Behind the third row.
16:31
So maybe I'm asking too much, but you know, you look at like a Rivian R1S, right?
16:37
That's pretty fricking fizzy.
16:38
Yeah, but it's double the price.
16:39
Well, it's $30,000 more.
16:41
And like twice to three times horsepower.
16:43
Yeah, and it's electric.
16:44
So if you want something with a little bit of like, you know, like Nathan would say,
16:48
let in the pencil, that might be the way to go.
16:51
People, let's face it, Tommy, if you've got this many kids, you probably should have a
16:56
It's much more practical.
16:59
It's much more utilitarian.
17:01
The sliding doors are much easier, especially in tight parking spaces.
17:04
And space wise, even though this has oodles of space, a minivan will still crush it.
17:08
Yeah, but this is turbo max power.
17:10
You can't get that in a Sienna.
17:13
And then the other thing I think we should talk about is what has become of all-wheel
17:20
So when I was a kid, the difference between four-wheel drive and all-wheel drive was kind
17:25
of, didn't have a low range, but then all-wheel drive became synonymous with luxury.
17:31
So what the manufacturers did was if you had a luxury car like a BMW or an AMC Eagle,
17:37
no, not an AMC Eagle or a Mercedes, right, you needed all-wheel drive.
17:43
And the way they did that was they kind of followed Audi's road map where they took
17:47
the torque and distributed it through, you know, two drive shafts to all four wheels.
17:54
And so it was not only all-wheel drive in the kind of the Subaru sense, symmetric all-wheel
17:58
drive, but it also provided equal amounts of torque to all four wheels.
18:02
Obviously there were diffs, but for the most part, let's keep it simple.
18:05
What all-wheel drive has now morphed into is this, which is there is no drive shaft
18:10
between the engine and the rear, right?
18:13
The drive shaft in the back has gone away replaced by a motor, but what this does basically
18:20
is it makes you less likely to get stuck in snow or on slippery conditions.
18:25
So it's a way to get the car going, but I don't think it does a lot once the car is
18:30
I don't think it adds a lot of handling or capability or weight, right?
18:36
But it's mainly meant for the way that most people need all-wheel drive, which is, let's
18:41
say, going up bail-pass in the snowstorm.
18:43
Yeah, which is what you need it for.
18:44
I mean, yeah, it's not torque vectoring, it's not an off-road machine, but what I will
18:50
It's not a rally car, which is probably right.
18:53
It's a three-row crossover, it doesn't have to be a rally car.
18:55
Right, but it's, you know, to me, all-wheel drive like the Audi Quattro system was always
18:59
about performance, and I think people still think that, but these latest versions of it
19:04
are basically just a way to get you not stuck.
19:06
Which is grand, which is what?
19:09
Yeah, I think that's fine.
19:11
I mean, if I wanted a WRX, I'd get a WRX, right?
19:17
And the other thing I will say about the all-wheel drive systems is they started out as kind of
19:20
like an all-wheel drive assist, they're pretty wimpy.
19:22
Because they would cut out at like 30 miles an hour.
19:24
Yeah, but these new ones are so good.
19:26
And to find out more about that, check out TFL Car this weekend, because I've got the
19:30
slip test, and you'll see exactly how the all-wheel drive systems perform.
19:33
But the Turbo Max stuff that I've tested specifically has actually been really, really good.
19:37
Well, that's why I brought it up, because I wanted to let people know that they can see
19:41
how these perform when you put them on rollers, and see if it actually does get you unstuck.
19:45
And this is one of the reasons you do the slip test, which is such a great test.
19:48
All right, well, we're going to cut here.
19:50
And if you want fizz, I think you'll find our next car quite a bit fizzier.
19:54
You think it's fizzier?
19:55
Is that the Explorer?
19:56
Is that its claim to fame?
19:58
Yeah, it's quite a bit fizzier.
19:59
How's the steering?
19:59
You didn't talk about that.
20:03
Yeah, it works like a crossover.
20:05
What do you want it to do?
20:07
That's what it needs to do.
20:11
All right, well, let's jump in the next one.
20:14
I have a question for you, Tommy.
20:16
Will anybody ever take an Explorer off-road?
20:19
Well, probably not.
20:22
So if we go over to TFL off-road, I was actually on a four-trip with this thing out in Death
20:25
Valley, and they took us on a pretty gnarly little trail for a three-row crossover.
20:30
So check out that video.
20:31
We got to use the skid plates, and we got to try the other drive system, and there was
20:34
some good stuff in that video.
20:36
I think it's fair to say if you want an off-roader and you're actually going to go off-road,
20:40
this is the one to get.
20:42
Well, the only other one that might be more capable.
20:45
Out of the three here.
20:46
Over the three here, yeah, probably.
20:49
It's got the most skid plates.
20:50
It's got the most off-road-y tires.
20:54
I'll give you that.
20:54
No, I mean, I think the Explorer Tremor is interesting.
20:56
So the history behind this is Ford had a model called the Timberline, which was kind of their
21:01
first dabbling into the off-road trims.
21:03
But they decided to bring it within the Tremor lineup, so now you've got an elevated version.
21:09
So you actually get real 31 and a half inch dual or AT offer tires.
21:13
You get three skid plates.
21:14
You get front recovery points.
21:17
You get a torsion limited slip rear diff.
21:20
So it's not a Bronco Sasquatch, but in this category of vehicle, this is about as good
21:26
Other than maybe like the Grand Cherokee with the low range, it's about as good as you
21:29
If you're listening to this as a podcast, you're going to miss this marsh gray color,
21:34
which kind of looks like muddy water, but I really like it, Tommy.
21:37
Yeah, it's almost got like an olive drab effect to it, depending on how the sun hits it, but
21:42
it's definitely cool.
21:43
And then what makes the Explorer stand out in the Tremor configuration are the orange
21:48
accents everywhere.
21:49
So you see them here in the grille, you see them in the tow hooks, you see them on the
21:54
Do you like the orange?
21:56
I especially like them.
21:56
We have a long-term Tremor F-150 in that space white metallic color, and I especially like
22:03
I like it better in that than in this because it really pops in the space white.
22:07
Now you might be wondering, what's the difference between like white on that barn over there
22:11
Space white has a little bit of like almost blue tint to it.
22:14
It's a really cool color.
22:15
We're about ready to sell that, and I'm really bummed because I really like that truck.
22:18
What do you guys think of the one-spoke colored?
22:22
I think it's interesting.
22:22
I think it lets people know that this is the Tremor Explorer, and I think Ford has done
22:27
really well with their off-road marketing, right?
22:30
They had this like moonshot Raptor, now there's four of them, and of course, you know, that
22:36
is a very expensive vehicle.
22:37
It's usually $20,000, $30,000 above whatever the regular one is, and so the Tremor kind
22:42
of fills that space nicely.
22:43
Well, this is supposed to be...
22:45
Between the regular and the off-roading king of the road.
22:47
Functional here because if you look, this is actually the spoke where the Schrader valves
22:53
So they say if your wheels are filthy, you also know where to air up based on the color
22:57
I don't know if that's true.
22:59
But it's clever, you know?
23:00
I mean, it's like engineers thinking outside of the box.
23:03
Integrated roof rails on this one, as you mentioned, kind of at the beginning, it's all very
23:07
blacked out here, so you're not going to find any chrome on the Tremor's configuration.
23:11
And then out back, you get the big Tremor badging, and then the Tremor, like every other Explorer,
23:17
is rated to tow 5,000 pounds, which I think is the same as the other two.
23:21
But yeah, I mean, this is the most...
23:23
The question I have, does that have a brake controller?
23:26
Then it can tow 5,000.
23:27
I've got a big argument with a PR guy once about that, and the reason for that, in case
23:32
you're wondering, is if it doesn't have a brake controller in most states, you're not
23:35
allowed to tow more than 3,000 pounds without a brake controller, and what a brake controller
23:39
does is it allows you to brake your load, in other words, a trailer, so that it doesn't
23:46
So you're not pushing 5,000 pounds into the truck.
23:48
But if your trailer has surge brakes, then you're good to tow.
23:53
But those are usually boats.
23:56
So yeah, I think that this is the most kind of masculine looking of the three, definitely.
24:01
And it's also the only one here...
24:08
But it's the only one here...
24:09
With six cylinders?
24:12
No, that's also got six cylinders.
24:14
Let me keep guessing.
24:15
So it's the only one here with a manual, I know, a regular automatic?
24:22
Oh gosh, I'm really...
24:24
It doesn't have a way to open the hood?
24:28
Without an engine cover?
24:30
It does look hideous.
24:31
It's the only car here with the North-South engine configuration.
24:36
I was completely wrong on all those.
24:37
So whereas the Hyundai and the Toyota and also the Honda in this class and also the
24:46
Transverse front-wheel drive bias.
24:47
This is North-South longitudinal rear-wheel drive bias.
24:52
So if you want that kind of rear-wheel drive push effect all the time, this is going to
24:56
be the car for you.
24:57
Are there such things as a vertical engine?
24:59
Is there anything you ever build a car like this, Tommy?
25:01
I don't think there's been one on its...
25:04
I mean, there's like this, you know?
25:06
There's sideways, right?
25:08
Slant, but there's no vertical.
25:10
See, I came up with something for you engineers, so if you want to be different, it might be
25:13
hard to keep the oil in it.
25:15
So this car has a twin-turbo V6 as configured, three-liters twin-turbo V6, this is the nano
25:22
and family of engines, 400 horsepower though, so huge, huge power in this.
25:27
Basically, the same engine that you get in the Explorer ST.
25:31
So what they've done is they put the ST engine in the tremor.
25:33
The other option you can get is you can still get the tremor with the normal 2.3 four-cylinder
25:38
if you want to save some money, and save a lot of money actually.
25:42
So you can get a tremor with the smaller engine, interesting.
25:47
So this has got the 10-speed auto, it's got 355-axle ratios, it also has a torsion-limited
25:52
slip rear diff, which is very cool.
25:54
But no locker and no low-range.
25:55
No locker, no low-range, yep, that's right.
25:58
But let's check out the trunk area and then we'll go to the back seat again.
26:02
The biggest issue I have with this Explorer is, especially compared to the Toyota, it's
26:06
pretty small inside, there's a little button.
26:08
So we're looking at about 16 cubic feet with the seats up.
26:16
Yep, and it does have a space saver underneath, yep.
26:18
Not a full-size spare?
26:19
Not a full-size spare yet, that's a problem.
26:21
That's a problem on an off-roader.
26:23
And the reason that's a problem on an off-roader is because if you get a flat off-roading,
26:27
a regular space saver is not going to get you back home.
26:30
They also have power-fold on this one, which you can see there.
26:34
Now, fully equipped for cargo, it's got about 85.8 cubic feet of space.
26:39
So significantly less than the Toyota.
26:40
Yeah, a lot less than Toyota, it's also power-folding.
26:42
I would not expect the power-folding, it just has a pain in the butt.
26:45
It's very quick power-folding though.
26:46
For power-folding it's not bad.
26:48
Yeah, usually they're much slower.
26:50
But why don't you hop back there?
26:53
How come the old man has to always go in the third row?
26:55
Oh, you volunteered earlier.
26:57
Alright, alright, I'm in for a dime, in for a dollar.
26:59
So, one touch operation again?
27:03
Definitely less room here, Tommy.
27:05
Yeah, it's a lot smaller.
27:07
Well, you're getting back here, but...
27:15
But, a little bit lower floor, so my knees aren't quite as high.
27:21
Your knees look pretty high.
27:22
I think they're just a little bit lower.
27:24
You know what the problem is?
27:25
I think that the bench is on the ground.
27:28
The bench is too low.
27:30
Yeah, the bench is very low.
27:31
Because this is a very lean, mean machine.
27:34
I do have my own vents back here.
27:36
I have somewhat good headroom.
27:38
This is a very, very firm bench.
27:40
Two cup holders versus four.
27:43
And only one USB-C over here versus two.
27:47
So, the kiddos are going to have to fight over it,
27:49
especially if there's feedback here.
27:51
So, I would rate this as a worse place to spend time
27:54
if you're an adult than the Grand Highlander.
27:58
Why don't you hop on out there, and we'll check out...
28:00
I'll hop into the second row.
28:02
So, one issue I'm also finding is that Toyota had a
28:05
three-a-breast seating in the third row.
28:08
This is only two, and the tremor you can only get
28:10
with captain's chairs, as they understand.
28:12
So, really, this is only a six-seater,
28:13
which does limit some of its usability for bigger families.
28:17
Rear-seat room is okay, and then it does have heated seats
28:20
but no ventilation, like the Toyota had.
28:22
And there is a third zone of climate control back here,
28:25
but it is manual, so it's a little bit more basic
28:27
than what we found in that Grand Highlander.
28:29
And if you have size 12 shoes, getting in the back is not good.
28:33
You'll probably want to leave that for the kiddos, for sure.
28:35
But not a terrible second row.
28:38
Definitely a more compromised third row, though.
28:40
I'm sure we jump in the first row.
28:46
Let's see what we got going on here.
28:49
This little tray is nice.
28:50
I've got the Minroni right here, so let's talk about fuel economy.
28:55
Yeah, significantly worse.
28:59
Don't point it right at my seatbelt on yet.
29:01
I've got to poke it this way so we can...
29:03
I see the instrument panel.
29:08
I believe this is the most expensive of the three.
29:10
Yes, but you can get the tremor.
29:13
You want to put your seatbelt on?
29:14
Yeah, destination is actually not bad.
29:17
It's only $1,700, which nowadays is good.
29:20
You can get the tremor in a more basic version for about 50 grand.
29:25
So you can see starting is 48,465, plus $14,000 in options.
29:30
And most of that is the ultimate package, which is the big sunroof,
29:32
the B&O 14 speaker, some of the power stuff for the seat folding,
29:38
18-inch spare wheel, you can see in there.
29:40
So the total price of this one is 64, so it is a lot of money.
29:43
I like this B&O speaker that's built into the dashboard here.
29:47
Yeah, the one thing, which are two things, which are a bummer on this car,
29:51
they got rid of the power openings under for 2026.
29:54
So this does slide back, but it doesn't open.
29:57
Okay, so it's fixed.
29:58
It's fixed roof, and more annoyingly, they also got rid of the wireless charger.
30:04
There's nothing under here?
30:05
No, I guess they had a lot of complaints from people saying their wireless charger
30:09
They're looking for a new supplier, no wireless charger.
30:11
So here's my little grumpy man thing that Ford does right and Toyota does wrong.
30:18
So having spent a lot of time driving electric cars,
30:21
I love the fact that when you pull up to a stop sign and you're in drive,
30:24
you can do what you're doing, which is not have your foot on the brake.
30:29
And in the Ford system, if you turn it on, once it's on, it stays on.
30:33
In the Toyota system, there's a button here called auto hold.
30:36
And every time you turn the vehicle on and off, it defaults back to being off.
30:41
And so every time you want to turn it on, you have to start the vehicle, hit the button.
30:45
Otherwise, you know, you're always creeping.
30:47
And I love not creeping, especially since I got used to that driving electric cars.
30:51
It's a nice feature, not to have your foot on the brake.
30:54
Yeah, I mean, everything is done through the screen in this car.
30:58
The only thing that's here, at least you have a volume knob.
31:00
But you don't have a tuning knob.
31:01
You do have your cameras right here.
31:03
Yeah, but you don't have track adjustment.
31:05
You don't have any climate control.
31:07
All of that's done in the screen.
31:08
Yeah, I don't love that.
31:09
And then you got to do like little pull-ups.
31:11
And then if the camera's open, for some reason you can't adjust the climate control fully.
31:14
So there's some weird things about the screen.
31:16
I actually do like it generally more than the Toyota.
31:19
I like this kind of app-based system, which is just always there and easy to use.
31:22
Speaking of screens, did you know that this week's news was that Audi recently came out,
31:26
the designer, or maybe as a CEO, he said that people don't like having large screens,
31:32
that it's not a luxurious...
31:34
I think we're living in a very strange time where the manufacturers, for whatever reason,
31:38
have stopped listening to the customers.
31:41
Maybe that's from like the tech bro guys who like, you know, take Steve Jobs' statement
31:45
that people don't know what they want until you give them to them at heart.
31:48
But listen to your customers.
31:50
People love real events.
31:52
People hate everything in the screen.
31:55
It's just a pain in the butt.
31:57
People love real handles on cars.
32:00
So in an emergency, you can get out and not die because, you know, the car's not blocking you.
32:04
And yet, manufacturers keep making that same mistake over and over again.
32:08
And I think at this point, it's clear what people want.
32:11
And yet, unbeknownst to the manufacturers, they'll just keep doing, you know,
32:16
handles that don't actually work.
32:19
Well, an example of that that I saw in the comments on my review is,
32:22
to turn on the off-road lights, you have to go into a menu here.
32:25
And then you have to click your high beams on.
32:28
And then it's just a, it's not super intuitive.
32:31
There's no knob to turn the lights on.
32:32
Not the off-road ones.
32:34
Regular ones you can.
32:35
Yeah, regular ones you do have a knob.
32:36
Yeah, because GM got rid of their regular ones as well.
32:38
Yeah, that was really silly.
32:40
And GM got rid of CarPlay and Android Auto, which is also, you know, line boggling.
32:45
Yeah, this still has wireless CarPlay and Android Auto, which is great.
32:48
I mean, I think that it's a pretty nice interior for the most part.
32:51
I like the orange stitching.
32:52
It doesn't have quite the same dynamic contrast that the Toyota has.
32:55
How about drive modes?
32:58
Toe haul, sport, eco, normal, slippery.
33:01
And then the trimmer also has an off-road setting here.
33:04
So you took this off-road.
33:05
My question would be, how does it do without a low-range?
33:08
Is there a granny gear that simulates a low-range?
33:10
Well, it's not as good as a full low-range.
33:12
Oh, I'm sure Cole's buckled.
33:16
That's our videographer.
33:18
I can hold that, Cole, if you want.
33:19
I know it's hard to put your seatbelt down when you're holding a camera.
33:22
I would say almost impossible, Tommy.
33:25
I think something's going on with this.
33:26
He's in the middle seat.
33:27
There's no middle seat.
33:28
Oh, there's no middle seat.
33:29
No, it's just the captain's shirt back there.
33:31
I wish there was for families.
33:33
Well, it's very hard to buckle a middle seat when there isn't one.
33:36
No, I actually did really surprisingly well for what it is.
33:39
I know there's no low-range, and it's not something I would regularly use for trail use.
33:43
But it has 10 speeds, so that means it can make first pretty short.
33:46
And with those 355 axle ratio, it's actually not too bad.
33:51
Plus, not a ton of ground clearance.
33:53
I think it's right at 8.7, but it's got three skid plates.
33:57
Engine, trans, I think transfer case, and in the back as well, which is ace.
34:03
So for the category of vehicles, it's definitely one of the most off-road capable.
34:07
Like I said, I'm not loving these seats.
34:08
They're all too firm.
34:09
The back seats were way too firm.
34:10
These are still more firm.
34:12
Let me help you out.
34:13
How about some massage?
34:15
Why do you hate massage?
34:17
I hate massage because it feels like somebody's poking me in the back or butt.
34:19
Doing that like massage.
34:21
Feel free to turn that off.
34:22
That just makes it worse.
34:23
Well, it does have massage, driver, and passenger.
34:26
And if I recall, I think the Hyundai's only driver.
34:28
So that is a nice feature in this form.
34:31
Every automotive journalist is like, oh my god, it's got massaging seats.
34:36
And I have yet to ever use a vehicle, and I've sat in a lot of them with massaging seats
34:41
that I thought to myself, this is great.
34:43
The only time I've ever found them useful is on a very long road trip.
34:46
When your legs start to fall asleep, then the massage function is kind of useful.
34:51
But as something that's luxurious, heck no.
34:53
You know, I'm kind of with you.
34:54
I don't like massaging cars, but everybody I know that has it adores it.
35:00
So I think we're just the odd ones out in that case.
35:05
I don't want to be sexist, but I don't like regular massage, let alone automated massage.
35:10
Yeah, but a lot of my friends are guys like massage too.
35:12
It's a really big thing.
35:15
So the best part about this car from an off-road standpoint, and we're feeling it now,
35:19
is the ride quality is really good.
35:20
It's a little bit soft, but that means that when you're out in your Michigan pothole roads,
35:26
it's not going to beat you up.
35:27
And when you combine that with the fact we have 18-inch wheels with the big sidewall
35:30
on these 31-inch tires, it's got a very good ride quality.
35:33
So that's excellent.
35:34
Yeah, I do love the look of the thing, Tommy.
35:38
It feels and looks the most rugged, probably because it is the most rugged.
35:43
And I think, like I said, Ford has done a great job with the tremor and making it almost
35:48
as lust-worthy as a Raptor, but yet making it somewhat affordable.
35:53
Well, this one's not.
35:55
You put the smaller engine.
35:56
But if you get the small engine, it's pretty good value.
35:57
You know, we've got that Broncoiner long-term fleet.
36:00
And that has a smaller four-cylinder, and I don't ever miss the six-cylinder.
36:03
But then you don't get the massage.
36:06
Are you going to floor it when you get on the pavement here?
36:09
Show me how quick this thing is.
36:10
I'm going to let this car behind me go by.
36:12
And then we'll give it a go here.
36:14
But why do you think of that little sound when you make the turn signal?
36:17
I kind of like that.
36:19
It's a very distinct Ford sound.
36:21
Also, one other cool feature, when you put it in off-road mode, the cameras come up right
36:27
So you can see where you're going off-road.
36:28
I think that's very smart.
36:29
So we'll put it in a sport mode here, sport mode engaged, and then here I'll come to a
36:35
We'll give this 10 speed a little bit of a brake torque.
36:37
I would brake torque it nowadays.
36:39
I think that actually slows it down.
36:43
It's really, really quick.
36:45
I mean, there's 60 already.
36:47
I think 0 to 60, somewhere around five seconds.
36:50
This is a really quick SUV.
36:52
I also think that's augmented sound that's being pumped in here.
36:54
Sure, I probably is.
36:55
But it doesn't matter when you go blow past all of the other families in the drive-through.
37:01
Except for the ones who are in the electric ones.
37:04
Like Ionic 9 is going to be 20 grand more than this.
37:08
Rivian's going to be more.
37:10
I mean, I know they're out there, but that's properly quick for a three-row.
37:16
That's a really fast one.
37:17
Yeah, that augmented engine kind of bugs me a little bit.
37:19
Go into normal mode.
37:20
You won't have to listen to it.
37:21
Let's see if it gets rid of it.
37:26
Not as growly, but still there.
37:28
I actually don't mind it, though, because it kind of sounds cool.
37:32
I feel like you're in a race car.
37:33
What I don't like is the fuel economy.
37:34
19 is pretty bad, and you're going to be using that a lot.
37:37
Well, you go or boost, Tommy.
37:39
I know, that's right.
37:40
But the other big thing, the biggest selling point probably on this Explorer is Blue Cruise 1.5.
37:46
So unlike the Toyota, this is a full hands-off system when you're on premapped highways.
37:50
Something like 90 plus percent of highways in the US are premapped.
37:54
And now with 1.5, it'll even do lane changes for you.
37:59
I would have been very impressed by that.
38:02
Maybe until the end of last year where we purchased the Tesla Model Y with full self-driving
38:08
And we've been doing this video series over at alltfl.com, where the car is driving us
38:13
for hands-free for 2,000 miles.
38:16
And it's hard to be impressed by a car that does lane changes, where you can now go into
38:20
it and tell the AI, take me to wherever, and the thing does it 99.9 percent of the time
38:25
without any fuss or bother.
38:26
So I feel like once again, we're at a moment where Tesla is very far ahead of the rest
38:32
of the competition.
38:33
And a lot of the public is saying, well, I don't trust Tesla, which is understandable.
38:37
But the reality of the fact is that the newest version of FSD supervised could be level three
38:42
without the level three distinction that would bring the liability onto Tesla.
38:47
And I agree with that.
38:48
But you can't get a Tesla in this category.
38:53
Model X is $100,000.
38:55
I think you can get a third row in a Model Y now.
38:57
Yeah, but have you seen it?
38:59
It's like pathetic.
39:00
No, I haven't seen it.
39:01
You couldn't put a shitsuit in the back of a Model Y and haven't been happy.
39:04
Be careful with that word.
39:07
My point is like, you know, it's great to say Tesla's better, but you can't get a Tesla
39:13
But I'm just saying, I'm no longer impressed by a car that does automated lane changes
39:18
when a car can take you wherever you want in the kind of the US without ever touching
39:23
But if you're cross shopping the Ford of the Hyundai, I think it's important to realize
39:26
the Ford can do it and the Hyundai can't.
39:28
Well, speaking of the Hyundai, I think it's time we jumped in there.
39:32
Tommy, this Hyundai XRT has a distinction that is pretty important.
39:39
It's the cheapest of the bunch by quite a bit.
39:42
But let's get to that in a second.
39:43
Let me tell you something from my Chicago background.
39:46
When I was in Chicago, my favorite radio station was WXRT.
39:49
And I can't help but get that out of my head when I see the new XRT here.
39:55
Well, this is not only XRT, it's XRT Pro.
39:58
And what they've done is it really boosted the capability of this vehicle over previous
40:04
So not only do we have some appearance differences, but we also have rugged tires.
40:08
We also have a little bit of underbody protection in this one along with front and rear recovery
40:14
The only car here with back tow hooks, which is great to see.
40:17
I think we need to take a big step back.
40:18
I think Hyundai with the Palisade and Kia with the Telluride really redefined what the market
40:25
for these three rows is because they came in and gave you, I'll give you my experience.
40:30
I was driving an X7 across country when I got into the Telluride.
40:37
And in terms of quality of interior, in terms of kind of the construction, the value was
40:45
just out of this world.
40:47
It was such an incredible car for the money that you spent.
40:51
And I think we're back to that again, value.
40:53
Yeah, and what the Palisade has done in the new generation, and they've really, I think,
40:58
ruggedized the looks and made it even more premium looking than the old ones.
41:02
So the Telluride was always beautiful.
41:03
I thought the old Palisade was kind of strange looking.
41:06
This new one though is really interesting.
41:08
And they're built in the same chassis.
41:09
They're basically, you know, it's like GM has different brands, right?
41:13
Cadillac and Chevy, Hyundai and Kia are the same company and they share chassis, they
41:19
share powertrains, just different branding.
41:21
Although they've separated them a little in this newest generation because this is a naturally
41:26
aspirated V6 and the Telluride has a turbo four.
41:30
So actually it's a slightly different powertrain than the Kia and then they both are available
41:33
in hybrids as well now, which is more or less similar.
41:36
But yeah, I think that they've done, they've really changed around the styling of this
41:42
I don't love the front end as much as the rear.
41:45
So the front end has the world's largest turn signal.
41:47
I mean, there's got to be two square feet worth of turn signal area here.
41:53
It's unbelievably big.
41:55
Everybody in the world will know you're about to make a right hand turn when you use that.
41:58
And then of course it has ubiquitous red tow hooks showing you that this is indeed an off-roader.
42:03
Yeah, I do like the tow hooks a lot.
42:04
And I also do like this kind of old school rectangular graded grille.
42:09
It's not quite as big in your face as a Toyota and I like how it's kind of this two-tone finish.
42:14
So I think that comes across pretty cool.
42:16
I think there was a big sea change when it came to off-roaders and that was brought by
42:19
Jerry McGovern over at Land Rover with the new Defender.
42:23
Everything became, instead of rolly-poly, it became square jot and boxy.
42:28
And you see that here.
42:28
You also see that in the Santa Fe, you see that in a lot of off-roaders.
42:32
Just like the new Defender, these are now much more manly.
42:36
And the rear end is very Range Rover.
42:38
Also a big turn signal.
42:40
But this tail light design, the way that kind of wraps around the quarter panel here and
42:45
this smoothness but yet square jot design is very similar to the L405 Range Rover.
42:51
And then the new Kia has slightly thinner tail lights back here.
42:55
I like how they hide the exhaust so you don't know if it's electric or gas.
43:01
Yeah, but I like the Toyota where it's boldly proud that it's turbo powered.
43:05
Now, back here, we've got our third row of seats.
43:09
This one does have the manual lift, which I do like.
43:13
That pops up quite easily.
43:15
Same thing over here.
43:18
And we never really talked about this, but we should explain that the XRT Pro is the
43:23
off-road version of the Palisade.
43:28
We mentioned that at the beginning.
43:29
It's like the Tremor.
43:31
Yeah, exactly right.
43:32
This is the Tremor for Hyundai.
43:33
So not a ton of space.
43:35
There's no space behind the third row.
43:37
That's being very generous.
43:38
You can get a couple of rollerboards back here.
43:41
But when you have all two rows folded down, I think it's got 87 cubic feet worth of space.
43:46
So it's not too bad.
43:47
How about a spare tire?
43:49
I think we do have a spare.
43:51
Space saver, donut spare.
43:52
So at least, you know, not a full size, but we do have some spare.
43:56
So it feels like they all benchmark each other, right?
44:00
Except for engines, which we talk about in a second.
44:03
But do you want to hop in the third row when we're back here?
44:04
Yes, I will hop in the third row.
44:07
Can you unlock it, please?
44:09
I don't like the egg key at all.
44:11
They keep using this egg style key.
44:13
I can tell because you can't unlock it.
44:15
I just think it looks cheap and then it gets scratched.
44:18
Now this has a button instead of a lever.
44:21
Or a lever, as a British say.
44:24
This is actually the easiest to get in and out of on.
44:27
Tommy, by far better than the other two.
44:28
How's it feeling back there?
44:31
Well, let me see here.
44:31
Let me put this back.
44:34
Knees are, oh, this is a little tighter knee-wise.
44:37
Knees are also my nose.
44:39
Four cup holders, auxiliary vents here and two USB ports.
44:48
Look, the back of these things is always a penalty box.
44:52
Unless you're into suburban land, right?
44:54
And I can't help but feel that we always make the excuse that this is only for kiddos.
44:59
But sometimes, you know, adults get back here and I, as an adult, as a tall adult,
45:04
I certainly wouldn't want to spend any time back here.
45:06
Well, is it the worst of the three?
45:08
Yeah, because the seat, I mean, if you...
45:11
Here, I'll help you.
45:11
Yeah, I can't tell right now because you've got to push that seat forward, but I can't do it.
45:15
So I'm kind of screwed.
45:17
I'd say it's about on par with the Explorer.
45:20
Okay, but the Toyota is definitely the winner in terms of...
45:22
The Toyota is a winner.
45:23
This is second because the Explorer seats are very firm and the Explorer is last.
45:28
It just feels like that's, you know, the tightest.
45:31
This wins in terms of egress and entry, much easier to get in and out.
45:34
So I would say this is the easiest if you have to get back here.
45:38
Let me get out of here and then you can move the seat back.
45:42
So I would say in terms of second row space, very impressive.
45:46
I'd say more than the Ford in terms of second row space.
45:48
Pretty good headroom as well back here.
45:50
This was a little bit more basic than the other two.
45:52
So it is actually possible to spec this car with not only third, second row climate,
45:58
second row heated and ventilation, but you can even spec a Palsade with third row heated and ventilation.
46:03
This one, however, doesn't have any of that.
46:05
It's just got a little 150 watt plug.
46:07
You're missing it, Tommy.
46:08
Oh, I am missing it.
46:10
I was like, where did they put it?
46:11
That's why both of us do this.
46:13
We make a good team.
46:14
You do have third row climate, but no heated or ventilated second row in this particular.
46:18
I like the kind of mountainy pattern here in the seat.
46:23
It's kind of cool, yeah.
46:24
Yeah, then you get a big storage cubby back here.
46:26
And then you do have cup holders in the doors.
46:28
And then this one also has little privacy shades.
46:31
And this is kind of a nice feature.
46:32
You got this little light here that tells you if there's traffic coming.
46:35
You know, we forgot to show what's under the hood.
46:38
Yeah, let's show them what's under the hood of this bad boy.
46:40
So this is a little different than the other two.
46:42
The other two are forced inducted.
46:45
This one is naturally aspirated.
46:46
So if you like your NA engines.
46:49
Oh, and it also has struts instead of a stick.
46:53
So this is a V6, three and a half liter worth of V6, actually.
47:00
By far the lowest in power.
47:02
We're only looking at 287 horsepower, which is actually a little bit less than the old
47:08
Yeah, they went down in power.
47:08
That's very unusual.
47:09
Look at this engine mount.
47:11
Cole, check this out.
47:12
I'm pointing to an engine mount that looks like something out of a 1900 steam engine.
47:16
It just looks very old.
47:17
It's an engine mount.
47:18
What do you expect from it?
47:19
It just looks very like.
47:20
It only has one job.
47:21
It just needs to hold the engine.
47:22
It looks very steam punky.
47:25
Whatever you say, they're dead.
47:26
Usually you don't see engine mounts like that.
47:28
So eight speed automatic in this car.
47:31
Fuel economy rated.
47:32
I like the regular automatic.
47:34
Yeah, it's rated at 20 combined.
47:35
So one bed in the Ford, but still far off the Toyota.
47:38
However, the power train to really get is the turbo hybrid, which is very cool in the
47:45
But if you get that, you can't get the XRT.
47:47
I'm going to put you on the spot, Tommy, because you've been so good at facts.
47:50
How much is the tow?
47:50
I think it's 5,000.
47:52
So it's pretty similar.
47:54
But let's hop inside.
47:57
And see what we got going on in here.
48:00
This is another complaint I have with the XRT is they don't give you the option to get
48:05
the really nice colors.
48:08
So for example, we're about to get a calligraphy at the office, which is this beautiful.
48:11
But I bet you this lights up.
48:13
But you can get it with this really nice, like light brown tan, cool dashboard.
48:17
This one, you're kind of stuck with black.
48:19
This is where the tire hits a pavement because TBD, but we know how much this cost because
48:26
So how much is this?
48:28
So it's actually pretty good value.
48:30
They also give you a full fuel tank of gasoline.
48:34
But oh, look at that.
48:36
So actually fuel economy is pretty poor on this one too.
48:39
And this is built in Korea, dude.
48:43
So you get about the same economy as the Explorer, but you get a lot less power.
48:47
Oh, put your seatbelt on.
48:48
We're going to spin it around.
48:48
I think it's built in Korea.
48:49
I shouldn't say that.
48:53
I do like the big chunky controls here.
48:55
I'm never a fan of these haptic controls.
48:58
But at least they give you a menu that's always here on like the Ford that disappears.
49:03
So that could be worse.
49:06
And you do also all these physical controls here for track, for setup, for tune, physical
49:12
So that's all really good to see.
49:14
And the screen I find pretty straightforward and easy to use.
49:17
You want to put it out of the sun so we can show them?
49:19
This also has the more traditional sunroof.
49:24
Like I said, you know, if you want the luxury one, you got to get that calligraphy.
49:27
And then you also get a lot more color in here.
49:30
Not one, not two, but three USB-C ports.
49:33
So these are two charging ports.
49:36
This one right there is just for media, so you can connect your phone for media.
49:41
NFC wireless charger here.
49:43
Your phone is key, I think, on this car as well.
49:45
But what's really cool, which we don't get in the U.S., is to see how this kind of looks
49:49
In Korea, this whole thing folds up.
49:50
So you can have a bench in the front down there.
49:53
Do you like the shifting stock?
49:55
I don't love the shifting stock.
49:56
They once again reinvented it as every manufacturer has decided to do so in the last 10 years.
50:00
I do like how it vibrates now when you go to reverse.
50:02
It's kind of a nice improvement.
50:04
And I do like the 360 camera.
50:06
It's probably the best camera in the industry.
50:07
Look how clear that is.
50:08
You know what I'm going to complain about right there?
50:10
Our car is in white.
50:12
You might be able to change that.
50:13
It's one line of code.
50:14
But when you load the software, the car should know what color it is.
50:18
You know who does that?
50:19
Tesla does that all the time.
50:20
So here we've got our different tiles to access Apple CarPlay.
50:24
You get your trailer set up here.
50:27
You also get off-road pages.
50:29
Two big-ass screens, actually.
50:32
Yeah, I think these are a 12.3 screen.
50:33
But you can see pitch roll, oil pressure, temperatures, trans temperature.
50:37
They give you all the information you need to know right here.
50:40
You also have your camera set up.
50:42
So that's actually pretty decent.
50:43
I have to thank Hyundai because they actually lent us this for a long-term loan.
50:48
So we're going to have this for a couple months to get to know it much better.
50:51
So thank you, Hyundai.
50:52
That was very nice of you.
50:53
What do you think of these four little dots on the steering wheel?
50:56
Yeah, this is the new pixelized Hyundai H-Pattern.
50:59
They actually change.
51:01
I don't know if it's very hard to see in this light, but you get blue for my drive.
51:05
You get green for eco, white for normal, red for sport.
51:07
So they actually kind of key in with the car.
51:09
That's supposed to be...
51:12
Yeah, that's right.
51:14
I mean, I think that, you know, they've done a really good job of this car combining.
51:19
What's amazing is this is $10,000 cheaper than the Toyota.
51:24
That's a big number.
51:25
But you can get a cheaper Toyota.
51:27
Yeah, but still, I mean, apples to apples, that's...
51:30
This is pretty apples to apples.
51:32
No, apples to apples would really be the calligraphy that we're getting next week.
51:35
But that would be even much more upscale in terms of its interior and surplus materials.
51:40
And that one's priced about the same as a Toyota.
51:42
That's about 61, yeah, for the top of the line calligraphy.
51:46
So you're not really saving a lot much on the top end.
51:48
But I think this XRT is very well equipped.
51:51
Heated, ventilated seats, heated steering wheel.
51:52
But no, massaging seats.
51:54
Oh my, what am I going to do?
51:58
No, what Hyundai does is on their top trims, they give you a driver side massage, but no passenger.
52:03
I love when they do that.
52:04
That doesn't make the company a little cheaper, Petty.
52:06
Yeah, that's kind of silly.
52:08
But the car drives quite nice.
52:09
It's a little firmer than the Ford, but no squeaks and rattles.
52:12
I think it's a pretty well assembled car.
52:14
It feels nice and tight as you go down the road.
52:17
What is this about?
52:18
Why are there blue and red lines?
52:22
So you know if you're going picture, if you're rolling.
52:25
Look, you have tire pressure here, which is really good.
52:27
I kind of thought maybe Hyundai tagged itself.
52:31
But they've done a good job on this on the screen.
52:33
I think it's pretty cool from an off-road standpoint.
52:35
It doesn't have nearly the skid plates though that the Ford has.
52:38
The one thing I would say about this is the seating position is much more inside the car.
52:43
And then on top of it?
52:43
And then on top of it.
52:44
I'm not, I don't love that for an off-roader.
52:46
There's the old palisade.
52:47
Yeah, I kind of feel like I'm sitting inside an egg as opposed to on top of an egg.
52:52
I sit there because there's a lot of brownness in here.
52:56
No, it's got the latest in Hyundai driver Sistu.
52:58
So it's got lane centering, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, all of that.
53:02
It works pretty well.
53:03
It's not quite as advanced as the Ford, but it's pretty good.
53:05
I mean, look at the amount of space above my head.
53:07
Well, you can jack your seat up a little too.
53:10
That helps a little bit.
53:10
I never jack my seat up.
53:14
Well, you can kind of choose in this car.
53:17
Yeah, putting my seat up, now I feel like I'm sitting on top of the car.
53:19
But still, look at all the headroom.
53:21
I know, it's got a ton of space in here.
53:23
Yeah, it's very roomy.
53:24
So the only lackluster part about this car is the engine.
53:28
Well, let's accelerate.
53:29
Let's see what that means.
53:30
I know there's some dot hard guys that love their NA engines, which granted this and the
53:34
pilot are kind of your last two options.
53:35
I bet you none of them live at 5,000 feet above sea level.
53:39
Okay, 287 horsepower.
53:43
So you get a big burst, then it kind of just like falls off.
53:49
Yeah, much quicker.
53:50
We're still not at 60.
53:51
So by my butthole meter, I would say this is the slowest.
53:58
And then, you know, the two is quicker and then the four is the rocket compared to the
54:01
The problem is, like, I'm okay with being slow if the fuel economy is a benefit.
54:07
But it's slow and the fuel economy is pretty bad.
54:10
So the powertrain in this, the one to get really is a hybrid.
54:13
Well, you know where that is, right?
54:14
Because sometimes you would think that a smaller engine would give you more and better fuel
54:19
economy, but what ends up happening is it ends up working a lot harder to, you know, move
54:24
a much heavier car.
54:25
And so even though it's smaller, it uses more fuel because it's higher in the rev band.
54:29
This is the biggest engine of the three by a huge margin.
54:32
Yeah, but at least horsepower.
54:34
So a bit more displacement, but less power.
54:36
2.4 in the Toyota, 3.0 in the Ford, 3.5 in the Hyundai.
54:41
You remember that Hellcat we had?
54:45
That thing got, like, 31 on the highway because it had 600, 700 horsepower, 707 horsepower,
54:50
you know, supercharged V8.
54:52
Hemi was turning over at, like, 1,300 RPM on the highway.
54:58
But once again, this is the biggest engine.
55:00
So by displacement it should be...
55:02
Let's see what I'm saying.
55:03
Yes, but there's more to power than just displacement.
55:06
But I think there's this perception that turbos give you bad economy because it's a high...
55:12
It's a forced inductment.
55:13
Well, and the other thing that happens is this technology is always changing.
55:19
And this is the problem.
55:20
People today still think of turbos as when Saab put them in the 900.
55:26
And, you know, those were two seconds of turbo lag when Porsche did it.
55:30
And then horrendous fuel economy and then horrendous reliability.
55:33
And that first impression is hard to shake.
55:36
So there's all these old guys who are like, I don't like turbos because, you know, they
55:40
blow up and they're thirsty.
55:43
But here you have a car that's NA and yet it's the same fuel efficiency as the Ford
55:47
and yet much slower.
55:49
I put it in sport mode.
55:50
Let's see if that makes a difference.
55:54
A little sharper throttle response.
55:56
Yeah, sharper throttle response.
55:57
But the whole power aside, very comfortable car.
56:01
Yeah, maybe even the quietest of the three.
56:03
It's really well insulated in here.
56:05
And it offers a lot of space and value.
56:07
Like of the three is the best value.
56:09
So which of the three is your favorite?
56:11
Well, let me tell you one thing first.
56:12
The thing that would drive me crazy.
56:14
Right here, it's kind of a really cool dash design, but there's this little flat part
56:17
of the dash and it's already full of dust.
56:19
And all I would be doing is just wiping it off.
56:21
Same thing with this.
56:24
It's already dusty.
56:24
Luckily there's no piano black.
56:30
Which is my favorite.
56:33
We're wrapping it up, yeah.
56:39
Oh, gosh, I'm debating my off road.
56:47
Here's what I'm debating.
56:48
I love the off roading that these two can potentially do.
56:52
But then I am really thinking to myself, is this the right tool for the right job?
56:58
And the answer I'm getting is no, this is the wrong tool because you're not going to
57:01
take this off road.
57:02
So in this case, the off roadiness of both the Explorer and the Palisade doesn't give
57:09
me a lot of like, you know, up value.
57:13
So I got to say, I think I'd go with the Toyota if I had a family and I wanted practicality
57:19
because the fuel economy is what's going to sway me.
57:21
Yeah, I think that's very, very valid.
57:24
I think that the, you know, and the performance of the Toyota is not far off of the Ford in
57:28
terms of real world performance.
57:30
Now, if I lived on a dirt road and, you know, I was doing a lot of, you know, dirt work,
57:35
then it might be either the Ford or this one.
57:39
I haven't really spent much time besides, you know, you actually spent more time behind
57:42
the Ford, the other wheel of the Ford.
57:45
Andre drove this back from Arizona.
57:47
So this is my first exposure to it.
57:48
So I don't want to make a decision between the two yet.
57:51
I guess if it was serious off roading, I would definitely go for the Ford because that one's
57:54
going to be usable off road.
57:56
If it was just a dirt road and I wanted to save some money, it'd be this guy.
57:59
I think the winner for me is this one because I like the style.
58:02
I like the blended style usability and comfort.
58:04
I think it kind of manages those three very, very well.
58:07
The powertrain is by far the weakest and this is the fuel economy's disappointing, but I
58:10
think the value is definitely there for what you get.
58:14
Plus you get the 10 year warranty, which is a pretty big deal within owning these cars.
58:18
So for me, I think the Hyundai is the winner, but all three, you can't really go wrong.
58:21
And if you want to see my slip test, we get all three of these on the rollers to see really
58:26
what is the best AWD system that's coming soon.
58:29
Head on over to altff.com.
58:31
Hey guys, thank you for joining us for another wonderful, I think, I hope, interesting video
58:36
where we get hands on with three direct competitors and see which one is what.
58:42
And we'll see you in the next one.
