This episode finds us on the Music Pier at New Jersey’s Ocean City Boardwalk. We were invited to do a live show at the PCA Boardwalk Reunion, a one-of-a-kind car show presented by PCA Zones 1 and 2. It was an event where 355 Porsches lined the boards. Our guests include Bob Gutjahr and Ellen Beck, who are the founders of the event, and David Whitlock of the Stuttgart Market Letter. We chat with Bob and Ellen about how the event came to be, how many cars attend, what their volunteer team is like, and the behind the scenes challenges. David Whitlock then joins us to talk about how the month of September’s Porsche auction results has fared. He picks out five auction of note and reviews them with us. It was an hour that just flew by.

Welcome to the Porsche Club Insider, your one stop for all things Porsche and PCA.
Here's your host, Vu Gwin, and the Insider Crew.
Welcome everyone to a Porsche Club Insider Episode 190.
We are in a not so usual location, Manny.
This is where the Beach Boys played.
In this hall?
Yes.
Very true.
And the polar opposite is us.
They were in the summer.
We do have a lot, for those of you that are just listening and not watching on YouTube,
we have a live audience in front of us, so the pressure is on.
We're here at the sixth annual Boardwalk Reunion in Ocean City, New Jersey, and we're
going to, we have some special guests, but I want to take care of a few housekeeping
things here.
I want to thank our presenting sponsor, Pirelli, Pirelli Tires, have to achieve the highest levels
of performance, safety, noiselessness, and grip on the road surface, innovative tires that
satisfy even the most specific mobility needs of the end consumer.
And I thank all of you that are listening.
I want to thank all of you that are present.
If you aren't currently a PCA member, everyone here, PCA members, of course, hopefully
they heard that on the mic, that the strength of the audience is magnificent.
But if you're not a PCA member, grab your VIN, head to PCA.org, and for those of you that
are looking for a Porsche, you could buy one off the Boardwalk, because I saw a couple of
for sale signs, but we also have the Test Drive program, head to PCA.org and get yourself
set up.
As far as our guests, we're going to do a two-parter for this episode.
First, we're going to have the founders of the Boardwalk Reunion, Bob Gutierre
and Ellen Beck.
Round of applause for being here.
I will say that Bob was three years ago on our 10th episode, and here we are at 190.
It's amazing.
Wow.
Yeah, it took it that long for him to come back.
Wow.
The ratings, the ratings were that good.
And then, exactly, all because of you, Bob, all because of you.
And then our second session on this episode will be with returning for the third time,
David Whitlock, Stuckart Market Letter.
David, thank you for being here.
Yeah.
So, you know, isn't it kind of weird that we get this big table?
To me, it's very strange with an audience, because those who've never watched this show
on YouTube, it's just three or four of us in a little room, and I have to tend to
see to forget that this is going to be broadcast to everyone.
So it's just like, boo, Damon and I, sometimes Rob says, just talking, just like I got
a cart and coffee, and sometimes things have to get edited out, because we forget
that.
So, if you're all being here, Manny's going to stay within the guardrails, because when
you're normally not here.
I'd heard of I can whisper like this.
I'm like, Damon, you're going to need to cut out right around one minute, 30 seconds.
I think, is this the first time, Roxanne, you've ever watched this record?
Wow, that's good.
Oh, are you nervous that your wife is watching?
Early on, I didn't think anybody really listened to the podcast.
And I think it was like the 9th or 10th episode, I was commenting about someone's
cooking that we went to a party, and we found ourselves in a room with that
person, and my son says, hey, let's show Pop Pop on the TV, and he brings up that
podcast, and she's looking at me, and then it hit me, I talk about this person's
cooking in the show.
And that is why I stay right in between the guardrails, Manny, and I warn that
you do too, because oftentimes you say Porsche things, and I have to remind you
that Porsche also listens to our podcast.
Yes, that was also intimidating when they told us that they listen, and
sometimes they get very nervous because they told us things and we come very
close to revealing, but we don't, but we don't.
So thank you both.
I know this is a busy day for you.
You've been up here at least a couple of days.
I know you were up this morning before the sun came up.
We brought up a few cars onto the boards.
Let's talk about what was the inspiration for having Porsche's.
I won't mention the number, because I'll let you do that, to have Porsche's on
the boardwalk here in Ocean City, New Jersey.
Well, it goes back to my family's history with Ocean City.
I'm from North New Jersey, and my family has been vacationing here for
almost seven decades.
So there's been six or seven generations of Gootyards that have been
coming to Ocean City for all these many years.
And when Ellen and I were taking our children here back like 20 years
ago or so when they were very young, we happened to see at one point in time
the Corvettes coming up on the boardwalk.
And that really was the sea that was planted between Ellen and I as we
discussed what would make sense for a Porsche related event on the boardwalk.
Because I mean the Corvettes were having a great time, it's a great venue.
But they're not Porsche's.
But they're not Porsche's.
So we wanted, we wanted-
I'll have to say, Ellen, we love Corvettes too.
So now we don't get the hate mail.
Ellen, we don't want to get the hate mail.
We do, as an aside, the Corvettes and their organization has been
wonderful in supporting this event and giving us lessons learned and over the year.
So we've had a very good relationship with the Corvettes.
And we've learned a lot from them.
And in turn they've learned some things from us as well.
But they've been coming for about, oh my gosh, almost 50 years here.
So I gotta believe other car clubs that see Corvette or
now see the Porsche Club being on the boards.
How many other makes or models like do what we do here?
So the Ocean City is a very car friendly boardwalk.
They have at least as far as I'm aware at least five shows during the year.
The first show is actually a new show that they started in May of this year.
And this is a hot rod new car show for all cars 1989 and newer.
So that's in May.
They have another one in June, and that's more of a street ride show.
And then because of the summer season, it's almost impossible to have a car show here
during the summer months.
But then in the fall they start easing into the car season again.
So the first car shows that occur are the weekend after Labor Day.
And they have a street ride and classic car show here on Saturday after
Labor Day, and then the Corvette's traditional date is the Sunday right after that.
So it's a Sunday after Labor Day.
So it's easy to say, okay, we see what they're doing.
We would like to do the same thing like Ellen, what's it like to get?
How do you find the person to say, we would like to do this too?
Do you call the mayor or who do you call?
Ghostbusters.
Ghostbusters.
So the city is extremely welcoming.
And so we work with lots of different people in different arenas.
The police department supports us and the city tourism and all of the people in the city,
including here at the music peer, the AV department, and all of the staff that support us.
And it's really been an extremely successful relationship.
And they're very happy to have us here, and we're very happy to come here.
Yeah, and over the years, as this event has grown and the reputation of the Porsche Club,
our members here being so kind and welcoming to the city as well.
I mean, we're seeing more and more where the city's leadership, the council members,
and even the mayor recognize the significance of our event.
And they constantly express their appreciation for our support.
So it's a great mission.
We support locally.
We buy our apparel right here at Jilly's T-shirt, T-shirts right on the boardwalk.
And they ship it in for us and take care of it.
And by the way, thank you for supporting our event.
I'm rocking it.
I'm trying to look a little younger by wearing a hoodie.
I don't think Manny's ever seen me in a hoodie.
I don't normally wear a hoodie.
Hopefully I look a little younger.
I thought you had to get your hair messed up when you put it on.
That's why you never wear one.
I messed up my hair.
That's not a big no-no.
So one of the things that we like to support the local businesses,
and it's become, over the years, now a weekend event.
And the end of the traditional end of the season
is the Columbus Day weekend, which was a week ago.
And so our event, single-handedly, has extended the season.
And you'll notice that all the shops are open for us.
And we sold out three different hotels.
We had room blocks at three different hotels.
And the Scarborough Inn hosts a party
on their big porch for us on Friday night.
And then the Flanders Hotel, we have 240-some-odd people
for the banquet tonight.
And so we really bring a lot to the community.
And they do a lot for us as well.
Now the first one, this is a sixth one.
The first one, I believe, it was tied together
with 356 registries.
So we're not actually counting that as a board?
No, we don't count that.
We don't count that one?
We don't count that as a board for you.
Let it be known that I brought up the fact that it was 356.
And I was very proud of it.
That's like the stepchild of it.
The start of it all.
We don't want to call the stepchild.
It was not a stepchild.
So within the guardrails, outside of the guardrails.
When I asked you about it, you made a face.
You were giving a shout out to Corvette.
And now come on, what about 356?
Yeah, that's what I am.
I'm giving a shout out.
I recognize the first one was with 356.
I think the first one was really the registry.
Could you guys do that, right?
So when you say six, that doesn't count that first one?
No, it does not.
Oh, so I was counting them.
You know, why?
Because it rained.
That's why they don't want to run it for it.
That was a tough one.
You're killing me.
So this is actually the seventh boardwalk event
that Ellen and I have done.
The first boardwalk event was the 2018 356 holiday.
So we wanted to start with baby steps.
And we knew a holiday would be just
about the right size for car control and management.
It's a four day event.
It's a four day event.
So we orchestrated the four day event in and around Ocean City,
Ocean City events to include two events on the boardwalk.
One was a parade the Friday night before the actual concourse.
So in 2018, the 356 registry had the event here on the boards.
But it was a full-fledged concourse as well.
Yeah, so that was not a boardwalk reunion.
No, but we had so many PCAers want to see the event
because it was so unique having porches on the boards
that we knew based upon all the interests and all the questions
about it that we were going to come back the following year
and start boardwalk reunion in 2019.
And how many cars were there that first year?
About 150 some odd?
For the registry, it was 150 or so.
150 cars.
And today we have how many cars?
350 cars.
350 cars.
Exactly.
That's incredible.
Congratulations.
Wow.
Thanks.
So there's a theme to the, there's a few cars in the middle here.
Yes.
So we typically do a commemorative theme every year
just to keep interest from unique special interest groups.
We feel we want to address a lot of the hobbyists out there
who have a love for a particular car.
So it goes back to PCA's idea of having registries.
And so for every year we have a commemorative car
or a commemorative model or design.
So this year is the 60th anniversary
of Porsche's target design.
And it's also the 60th anniversary of Porsche's 912.
So we-
I was going to ask because there was a target, target,
target 1912.
Correct.
So we have both, we are celebrating-
But we have a 912 target.
And we even have a, yeah.
So Jeff Miller from Northern New Jersey Region
brought his 69, 912 target, which is a gorgeous car.
I think this is one of the first major public debuts
for that car.
But the point is, is that we're celebrating
both of these models this year as an anniversary type deal.
Next year, we're going to go with a trend that we see
and we really like.
And I think that it's going to resonate
with a lot of people because it's so unusual.
So next year, we're going to celebrate
and have the Safari rally cars come out.
So we're going to have Safari rally cars.
So that's an insider tip here.
That's the first time you're announcing this for next year?
Well, it's the first time it's been announced,
but we have disclosed this on the internet
that we are going to be celebrating Safari and rally cars.
We actually have one of our volunteers,
staff members, Andrew Toth, building a 944 rally car
just for next year's event.
Is there any chance that maybe one or two of them
will end up in the sand?
Like we could actually take a photo of a rally car in the sand?
So we've asked that question of Ocean City.
That would be so cool.
Yes, I know, but that's one thing that they don't do.
They don't put any cars on the board.
On the sand.
But we have a year to work it.
Or you could put the sand on the board.
We could put it back.
Put it back when you're done.
I have to say, though, you're missing
the most important target.
And I was my concern, the 914.
And that has a target pop and a target bar.
Why was it discriminated?
I do not know.
So this.
Well, leave it there.
Well, leave it there.
Well, everybody have their popcorn.
Are you ready for this discussion?
So it was a whole year from.
Because I put my target top in my trunk.
So we did celebrate Manuel, the 914, in 2019.
Oh, we celebrated other cars, too.
No, we only celebrated the 914.
You know what you guys will notice?
This is the next year will be the first year
that he doesn't have a car that qualifies.
I think Bob and Ellen own like 14 cars.
Every year, there was a car that was qualified.
So we do not do that.
Remember wrong.
Sir, we do not own it.
You own a 912e or not?
We do own a 912e.
But it's not here.
Sadly enough, we do not have a 912e on the boardwalk today.
I wish we would have, but it just didn't work out.
It was a special 912e.
I'm going to miss it because they're getting it repainted.
Let's see, is it the dander of 912e?
There was the one where the paint
kept on flaking off.
Yes, exactly.
And at one point, it looked like the state of Vermont.
But then if you hit it, a certain way, the paint
would fall off.
And then it looked like.
State of Texas now.
It's pretty big.
How, boo, how did we get to talking about boardwalk
reunion, detrashing my 912e?
How do we do that?
Now you guys, keeping this episode to an hour
is very difficult for me because he goes off
on these tangents and I have to reel him back in.
Reel him all back in.
All right, so the beauty of really for this event
is I have, and for Manny, I have zero responsibilities.
And I know it takes a team of people
to pull this all together.
And I know as an attendee, even though it's
a day event, you have what, 70 volunteers?
Yes, between 65 and 70.
And you started a year ago on planning this.
Oh, well, it just keeps going, I mean, year after year.
But we have a lot of repeat volunteers.
And I have to give a shout out because it's like we set
the wheel in motion and all the volunteers do their thing.
And it all comes together.
What's really interesting and exciting
is that this is a Zone 1 and Zone 2 combined event.
So it's supported by volunteers from almost every region
in Zone 1 and Zone 2.
Yeah, I was going to say, yes.
So thank you very much.
I mean, it's absolutely unique in that we're,
if you look at the PCA geography,
we're at a nexus point for Zone 1 and Zone 2 geography.
I mean, you've got across the river,
you've got Shottenbaum.
I'm smiling Manny because he's getting into military mode.
You've got reason to order.
The borders are here.
We're going to attack from the south.
The south of that is Delaware, but then on Jersey side,
you've got Shottenbaum.
I can't get anywhere.
Shottenbaum in the New Jersey region and Jersey Shore.
Yeah.
So it's really cool that this is really
where all the zones come in.
Both zones come again.
You have right there volunteers that come
from across the country.
Yes, we do.
They fly in, right?
Yes, we do.
We have folks from Michigan.
We have folks from Ohio.
What's the furthest?
The furthest volunteer we have is New Mexico.
So Liz Shaw.
Liz Grove?
No, Liz Fluent.
Fluent, OK.
Liz Shaw, who's the new National Awards Chair,
flies in every year to support this event.
But we also have a lot of people driving.
So we've had cars drive as far from far south as Florida,
as far north as New Hampshire and Maine.
And Canada.
And Canada as well.
And Canada as well.
And we have cars far west of St. Louis, Missouri.
It's interesting, the car from St. Louis, Missouri,
one of the targets right out here, is owned by Miles Cramer.
Miles lives in St. Louis.
But he is a 1969 graduate of Ocean City High School.
The high school here?
Yes, right over there.
Oh, very cool.
Yeah.
Wow.
So this morning, what was impressive
while you're trying to make this,
I know it's like your thing.
I know we have a U-Haul truck.
And heaven forbid you get a PA
and speak over a PA.
But standing on top of a U-Haul, yelling at the top of your lungs
seems much more appropriate.
But it is your thing.
It's a thing.
And it works.
When you ask how many people are here for the first time,
that was a significant number of people.
Yeah.
Very cool.
Very exciting.
Very cool.
We do have, and we really want to thank, obviously,
our first timers.
But we have so many people that come back year after year
because they enjoy the event so much.
So we're very, very, very, very happy and humble
to have so many people come back year after year.
It's just wonderful.
And ask to volunteer.
And go ahead.
And volunteer too.
Yeah, they ask to volunteer.
Like Gregory Brown, I think he said
he was volunteering for next year.
Right, Gregory?
Yes.
Yes.
Ooh.
Capacity-wise, you said you have 350 cars here.
The boardwalk is very long.
Yes.
And I didn't think it could fit 350.
But I think you probably could fit a couple more.
Is there a capacity limit?
So if you do the math, and Andrew Becktold,
who is a local resident here, and is a Shottenbaum member,
is an architect.
So he does all of our math for us.
And he has tables and spacing geometry.
And he's determined that we can probably have about 450 cars
here.
450.
Yes, but the issue of hand, of course,
is we don't necessarily have all the room for 450 cars.
For staging.
For staging, but we could probably
make 400 cars easily work.
So can I also congratulate you?
I know this year it was different for staging,
because typically we're out at the airport, which
is plenty of space.
And then you take a little stroll,
and then come up on the boardwalk.
And this year it was different.
And we were closer.
Yes, so this year was the first year
of the six times we've done it,
where they've asked us to stage
in the Fifth Street parking lot.
Previously we were at the Municipal Airport.
The city told us, I think in August,
that the airport would be under construction
and that we would have to move to the Fifth Street lot.
So we had, this is a brand new procedure for us.
So we learned a lot this year.
And we watched the Corvettes.
The Corvettes do this as well.
So again, we want to extend out our thanks to the Corvettes.
But we also have our own unique requirements too.
So this was a very much a building year for us
and a learning year because of the Fifth Street lot
and also the fact that we're coming down
opposite of the board.
Right, the cars are all facing the different way.
So what kind of meltdown did you have
when you got that news in August?
We had some conversations.
We did have some conversations, yes.
So because being, hanging out with,
I've known Bob and Ellen forever,
but because my wife does actually the volunteering
at this time, I just tag along as a guest.
As a plus one.
As a plus one, but I get to hang out.
And nothing, the only thing better
than not having any responsibility
is hanging out with people that do have responsibility.
Behind the curtain.
I was watching Bob meltdown over the idea
of fitting 375 cars into this tiny little parking lot.
And we must have walked in a parking lot three times,
I think, and staring at it, hoping that would get bigger
the longer we stared at it.
And of course it didn't change size.
And at the time there was two trailers
and about 18 cars scattered that weren't ours.
So he was starting to get very stressed out.
And I kept on saying, I'm the one with high blood pressure.
I'm relaxing.
You're the one who's ready to melt down.
It all worked out.
No, to the credit to the city, and the police department,
I want to give them a shout out.
They cleared out the entire lot.
There was trailers and cars.
But when we got there at six o'clock this morning,
it was completely clear.
So you're saying that Officer Carl was right.
He was right.
And so the other thing too is I
want to give a shout out to all of our parkers
and our volunteers and you two.
So I'm the liaison with Officer Carl.
You think you would have learned this morning
because someone had to remind him this morning to thank you.
They're yelling out, don't you have a co-chair?
So for next year, is there an option between the airport
or there, or are we going back to the airport?
I think we're going to be back at Fifth Street
lot for the foreseeable future.
We're going to be back here?
Back at the Fifth Street lot party.
I think it's better.
Who thinks it's better?
I thought this one was better.
Thank you.
Right?
I thought we were going to close again.
All we need is like a pastry truck and a coffee truck.
Well, that's in the works.
So yes, that is actually in the works.
So again, for those of you who came,
and I think most of us are registered here,
we couldn't get any sort of concession service
because the city was all hands on deck
because of the beach rebuilding and the recovery.
So we couldn't, their staff simply wasn't available.
So we really appreciate everybody getting breakfast
ahead of time.
Hopefully next year we will have either the concession stand
worked out, or Ellen, of course, is going
to have food trucks and a few other things.
Holiday coffee.
Holiday coffee.
They'll be here.
They'll be here next year.
I've got to say to people listening who are not
from around here to watch you on YouTube,
this event has no car judging.
It's not a judge car show.
It's simply like a cars and coffee in the afternoon
on the boards.
You park the cars, and you walk around and look at them.
You can sit in your car all day if you want,
or you can just walk around and look at other cars.
But there's no trophies.
There's no teams and white coats coming to your cars.
That's half truth, because if you're walking with Manny,
he's judging you.
He's judging your car.
He's judging your wheels.
He's judging how well you wipe your car down.
There's judging all right.
Just no awards that go with it.
So we do have people out there right now on sling chairs
and just hanging out on the boardwalk and enjoying the sun.
I mean, we have people walking the beaches.
We have people shopping on the boardwalk.
I have a friend who once went into one
of the shops and bought a beach towel for $5 on sale.
A very good friend.
And she went out and took a little nap on the beach
while during the event, and was very refreshed and happy.
And so some people go shopping.
Some people eat.
There's plenty of things to do.
We're talking about Roxanne.
Yes, yes.
I'm looking around because for the first time,
I don't know if she's in here,
but for the first time I've seen on boardwalk,
actually at any car show, there
was a lady in her 911.
She had her phone propped up on the steering wheel
watching Netflix.
But I think she fell asleep while watching Netflix.
So her head was on the side door.
And I'm like, should I check if she's OK?
She wiggled till she's all right.
I thought that was a horn that I heard.
But people are just chill.
I mean, it's so spiritual.
One of the nice things about this time of year
at the Jersey Shore is the weather is usually spectacular.
And we've been very blessed with some great days
here on the boardwalk like this one, where it's warm
and pleasant.
I mean, a lot of us are out in t-shirts and shorts.
Today and it's 18 October.
And so, I mean, you can have almost like a summer day
experience here at Ocean City.
And that's why I think so many people keep coming back.
I know it's stressful for you because the one thing you cannot
control is the weather.
Yes.
But for this event, what would you
say is also the next big thing that you
have to wrangle every year?
Like what else is that the folks that are attending
don't really know that you have to manage working
with the police or working?
Well, we have four volunteer photographers
here today, all Porsche Club members.
And they are taking video.
We always, Qibis Reineke does a walkthrough video.
And he starts at one end and walks all the way down.
And so then speeds it up.
And we'll be showing that at the banquet tonight.
And the other photographers are all taking lots of photos.
And so we put up a gallery.
They submit the photos.
And on our website, we have a gallery.
And so it'll take the next week or two
to assemble those and get those posted.
But people can go and find lots of memories.
And we're showing some photos tonight also at the banquet.
And so updating the website and getting those photos,
that's the next immediate thing for me, anyway.
Now, is that the only way you see it?
Because I know when it's your own event
and you're buried looking at fires to put out so on
and so forth, have you been able to take some of it
in?
Have you seen a couple of cars that you say,
this is definitely my favorite?
Or what memorable cars have you seen today?
To be honest, we don't have time really to walk the whole thing.
I knew that was going to be the case.
Yeah, right, exactly.
You'll see it later when you're looking at the photos.
There are some nice volunteers out at the merchandise table
and the welcome table while I'm sitting here
and talking to you all.
So everybody plays a part.
And all the volunteers are doing a great job.
We typically try to, when everything settles down,
by the music here, Ellen and I typically
like to troop the line, so to speak,
and just walk from one end to the boardwalk to another.
But that takes a good 45 minutes to an hour to do it.
Because the boardwalk with the cars
is literally 1.3 miles long.
So it's an incredible display of cars.
I mean, if you go out there and walk both,
troop the line, going all the way down the 14th Street
and back, there are some incredible cars out there.
Did you say troop to line?
Troop to line, it's a military expression, yes.
Troop to line.
Troop to line, troop to line.
Everyone here, I know your audience,
listening audience can't see it, but on your way out,
you should take a look at the very special 9-11-R
that's parked out right outside the music pier.
And there's a QR code on there, so you
can read about the history of it.
It's a 1967, I believe.
And it's a one of 20 ever made.
So we get some very, very special cars.
I also want to make sure that we shout out
the 356 registry.
I mean, we had their first event here,
but the 356 registry continues to support this event.
And this year, we probably had more cars, more 356s here,
since the actual 356 all day.
So great turnout of 356s today to include a 1962 twin girl
roaster, which is in a phenomenally rare car.
And this car is just exquisite.
It's just literally up the boardwalk.
So a shout out to the 356 registry
and some of the great 356s that are here as well.
Did you drive your car up on the board?
Yes, for the registry holiday, we had both of them.
No, no, I'm talking about today.
Yes, we drove up one of our cars, and it was not a target.
What was it?
It was not.
Tell us what it is.
So this year, we drove up a 1988 944 Turbo S Silver Rose.
Oh, your Silver Rose car?
Silver Rose is here, yes.
I wish I could say it was an award winning,
but we got killed in the rally.
Oh, thanks to you.
It's just a big challenge, and thanks to me.
By Ellen and my wife, who ended up winning the entire event.
Number one.
Very nice, well done.
I wish we could say we were at least second place,
but we were more like 15th place.
Like more way down.
Well, I know you're getting antsy, because there's
a lot of stuff going on out there, but I would love it
if the audience could give them a round of applause
for doing a wonderful job with Boardwalk Reunion.
For those that can't see, they're standing up
in the crowd, standing ovation for these two,
and to all of your volunteers.
Ellen, you're going to step off.
I'm going to thank our corporate sponsor, and David.
David's going to take a seat next to me.
So again, I want to thank Auto Atlanta
for being our corporate sponsor, but if you're chasing down
a part for your 356 914 or 944 Silver Rose Turbo,
give them a call.
They've got you covered.
