Welcome back to the Nevo EV news podcast. If it's Tuesday, it must be Nevo EV Newsday this week

2026 update as well as the MG for EV urban the plot thickens

months I suppose over the last six weeks, but specifically this week and heading over to Heathrow

Wreckles Wreckles. It's a venue where MG UK were launching the updated MG for 2026 and the MG for EV urban

I got a chance then to sit down with vice president of design for MG Yosef

So let's get straight into that interview

So good morning or good day

My name is Yosef Kavan and I'm a vice president of psych design

And we're here in High Wickham just outside Heathrow Airport. I landed this morning Yosef and we've got a number of MG's

We're looking down on the venue here, but we're here today to talk specifically about two MG's and you had a very interesting presentation

It's like having twin children. We have the MG for a really great selling care

It's the car that we have at our home for the last year. So I'm very aware of the car

But we also have its new twin sibling the MG for EV urban

Yes, we do we do and we are very happy to welcome you today here and we are

We are very proud to have such a guest and we are also very proud to have the opportunity to show you and share with you

our

our let's say two small stars

Small stars because they are cars of C segment but for somebody already the big stars because they are offering and bringing lots of

I think great things what you can really

enjoy it

Yes

Very difficult to make a great car better, but you've managed to do that with the MG for EV update 2026

Externally very subtle sub updates, but I like driving along the road and saying oh, that's the new version

That's the updated version so at the front pretty similar

But then we have new wheels along the side 18 inch and then down at the rear a bit more of a change with the spoiler

Yes, yes, I mean, you know looking the car or the MG for I think we can all agree about the fact that

since already came the car was

making a very nice

Let's say reflection on the customers, you know people was really taking the car as something

unusual something standing out something with

lots of

powerful not only

engine but as well a powerful let's say

Aesthetical approach and

When we've been when we've been

Revisiting this car, you know, we've been spending of course lots of time

reflecting as well there the reactions of the people and talking to them what are the issues what they would love to

improve we came to conclusion that

That the the way how we touch it should be very very right way to not

Not push it too much. Just just to just to change, you know, we we as you already mentioned very well, you know from outside we have very

Powerful let's say proportions. We have good sharper looking car with

futuristic

Elements like the whole front is very sharp is very triangular and

Going through the side where we have not only

The power device to 5050 but we have as well proportions, which actually pretty well balanced over the wheels

You know where the back is actually making small step as well, which gives this hedge very unusual character

but what we did

thought is maybe a little bit too

to maybe

Maybe too strong or we want it to be a little bit more elegant was the divided spoiler in the back which we

Connected to become to be a bit more

Let's say more elegant

Because the power is there, you know, it doesn't need and the image is coming. It doesn't need to be

Overshowing this, you know, it can already come down. It can't really show that is

Confident the biggest change what we did

Made was special in interior where we actually retouch all the dashboard. We we thought that this

elevating, you know the

Appeal in the interior was the right things to do

Aside of increasing the size of the screen, for example, we had it

Something around 10 inch we have now 12.8. You know, we have some even more intuitive

To have the connection to interface, you know, we have like buttons in the middle console

We have the middle console which is actually touching the whole dashboard

There are many things which are really giving you the the feeling of sitting in in

value-oriented product and of course

I cannot forget the the materials which we as well elevated and the X power has for example even

Beautifully structured seats, you know sports seats, which I think it's it's going to make many people happy

I think so too

It's interesting to look at the global market and where this car

What goes really well in Europe UK Ireland Australia, but then in its home market. It was up against tough competition

So the mg4 in China is going to be what we call the mg4 evi urban

And so it's great to see that we have both still in this market in China

They will only have the urban version as mg4, but tell me a bit about the mg4 evi urban

It's a slightly bigger car where sometimes urban in my head would think it would be smaller, but that's not the case

exactly exactly absolutely right, I mean

Maybe before I actually start to explain the second second car, which is actually for us

Of course very important, especially as the new coming product

Maybe more important to even slightly spent a little bit more time to explain it

The first question will be why

Why do you bring second car, you know in the same segment by the same brand, you know

usually this is something what is very very

Logical question, you know, and let me start with that, you know as we as we

already know that the c-segment is

segment where most of the

Customers allow to allow to let's say

Look for product, you know, there are many of customers and

This customer is very high educated, you know, these customers has very clear

Aspectations of the product they have they have they have I will say

Clear need and as well

They could be even very critical in case they are misunderstood therefore we we mean of course

Improving the mg4 evi the mce

But we knew that by the decision to improving him

We could do it only so well that we have a second mg4 and this is the urban

Today I was trying to explain it in the presentation

With one small story, you know a small story, which actually to me

Can explain very clearly the logic, you know, it's like, you know talking about the life

I mean the most beautiful thing in the life is probably when when child is born

Mm-hmm, and we we all who has already family who have their child or you know

We know that the most beautiful moment is the first cry and this is what you know, of course

It's part of our life and it's kind of beginning. It's everything is day

You know the whole life is front of us not only the child which is born but even for us as parents

But they might even happen one magical thing, you know instead of one maybe could be

And you know bringing this this

Moment and and bringing Sally that the situation to two kids which are actually

Identical, you know, everybody's saying wow, how do you recognize the different?

Maybe on the beginning not

But in terms of growing, you know, once they start to grow once they start to draw once it start

to to get dressed

From equally identical kind of two people you find out

There might be fully two different personalities and they are fully two different personalities

They are always big being connected together, but they been always

respected as the unique

Different and this difference is something where I try to explain it that

Yes, we are talking about them G. We are talking about

C segment we are talking about

Customer but we are talking about different customer. We're having here now car, which is chasing instead of the speed chasing maybe

the other values like giving the family

No compromise in space giving the family feeling of

Being more than being

being

Let's say

Always there, you know, it's like creating something. What is perfectly?

Matching and taking segment from two different positions

It's covering the market more where mg4 update was as you say

Maybe somebody that was maybe more ruled by their heart rather than the logic in the head

It's not just a different body on the same platform. Also. It's on a different platform. So it's on the e3 platform

Yeah, it's every I will say it's everything different

Fortunately, not only the look which is one is more edgy one is more softer and the soft one actually the urban is

highly inspired not from the edgy brother, but from the cyber stuff, you know, which is already

let's say the

The biggest brother in the family, you know, and

this car is just trying to

To to get all what you know from this brother, you know, like in terms of aesthetic

But when we compare it and when we when we look even the platform is fully different. We have fully different

Battery system we have as well not for wheel drive, but we have front wheel drive

We have and it's coming lots of

Efficiency in the car, but one thing which is definitely by all of them. There's no compromise in safety

There's no compromise in equipment and there's no compromise actually in the position where they should be they are built

To make people happy. Yeah, and mg4 was such a sales success in the United Kingdom

What nearly half 49,000 of the 100,000 TV sold over here very similar in Ireland as well

Very popular car. And when you think about it, it's 2022 when it was launched

It still looks so good on the road. And so it's great

I was worried that urban was going to replace the existing mg4

And I'm so glad that you've done both models now to widen that because I think it looks so great still and it's such a

Practical care and a great driving care. So I'm looking forward to driving the urban today to see the difference in it

I mean, I have to I have to say to

To the to the people which are listening like we still been only in the building and we we saw let's say the presentation

We saw the cars

But we are going to soon go out and see the cars because seeing them on two parking places

Let's say neighbor parking places standing them in in this place with all the colors

You will understand and you will see how

how

Different and diverse as is mg going to enter this

world and you understand how important is to

to still keep the mg4

Original one let's say original the both original but but the first one to keep it as it is it's

It's really building family and building family means not forgetting already somebody not

Putting him out of the house, you know, he's still no reason. I'm still a great care and we have already

But at least to understand that is worth to look at it and to try it because I will anyway recommend, you know many things

People are talking, you know many things they are saying

These days I will still say do and try by yourself

Only if it's sink if you think it's really bad and fitting to you

We talk about that on Nevo Yosef with regards to take it for a test drive. Yeah, see what it's like to fit

Don't listen to everybody else go ask your wife ask your kids ask your maybe you a dog

You know, I think you will like it. That's a competition in the marketplace

So the pillars that mg sit behind with regards to value and space and technology and the drivability

It must be very proud moment for you as a brand to be able to stand behind all of those pillars and be proud of

Do you know what we're not lacking in any of these spaces because some of your competitors?

Wouldn't that have the biggest rear-room space or may not have the largest boot

May not have five-star Euro end cap

And so there's a lot of things to be proud of in with mg with these two models and your other models as well

But specifically today we're talking about the updated mg4 and the mg4 EV urban

Yeah, yeah, I mean, I mean we are I mean

If you will say are we perfect probably not but we're trying every day to get better and better

We believe what we're bringing now here is something what?

is in our best view that

the right

Product to to help the people with the with the not only problems

But maybe even creating the day a bit better, you know, the cars are really delivering

Great balance, but sometimes

Having all these responsibility on one product

has

Very heavy base to start with

Therefore shared power, you know shared problems shared possibilities and opportunities on two cars

It did help

To us to make

Even less compromise. We have much more sharper products to to really stand for the facts what they are and they are

They're going to be confident. They you know, they're going to show

presence with with

good

confidence

Before you wrap up Yosef, we also have the s5 which launched recently and then s6 which I saw on Brussels

Yeah, and other stuff coming down the line. It's a really exciting times. We just focus on electric

Nevo, but there are other models as well, but the electric lineup is getting stronger and stronger

Yeah, I mean, we are happy that even the infrastructure and everything is growing the for the electric cars, you know, what we are bringing

Definitely

becoming to be more and more popular and

We are happy that MG is is able to to

Let's say to cover and deliver in

Different segments and in different places. I mean, we are we don't you know, we should not forget it

we are in over 100 countries, you know active and

As I said in the beginning the world is so diverse, but many things are actually common, you know, every of us dreams about

Buying things which

Help him to to improve life and not to get more complicated. You know, we don't want complication

We want we want solving our problems and we dream to grow

therefore, I

believe that we are we are

By MG trying

to to

to stand for these

expectations and

What is of course great as well that

There is they certain

Let's say

Heritage, you know certain deep already experienced with customers. Therefore

We are not on the beginning, you know, we are already there and we know that there are people which

Which been already with MG for many years, you know, we've been born MG was already there

This is a little bit different in Asia when we come for example to China where

The crow is incredibly quick, but the brand

Experience

It's just on the beginning, you know

But it helped us in this great mix, you know, there's a lot of heritage and and incredible innovations from from

Asia, you know, we we are we are having

Great opportunities

One tough question before you finish yourself if you had to pick between the MG for EV Urban or the MG for update

I know you have a son on the door which would be your favorite

You have to pick one which would be more of your style. Would you be more heart or more head? Where would you go?

That's

Tough question

If you ask me who I prefer more my son or my daughter, it will be disaster

Because whatever I will say, I am sure I will be wrong. Yes, but

But I think the people when they will look at it, they will know

Yeah, they will know because they will know and they will not pretty quickly. It will not be easy

But they will know because they will know

What they what they what the life where they are, you know, what it needs, you know, good politicians answer yourself

As you can hear it was very interesting

To see the difference when I saw the MG4 EV Urban or the Urban as I like to call it just to keep it easy

I was like, I'm not so sure about that design. It wouldn't be to my taste a bit softer

Curves design language taller

Whereas I really like the design and even if it's four years old. It's it's still very eye-catching on their old the MG4 and

So I'm glad this is what's going to happen. What's it the numbers and the domestic market of China just didn't hit

It was always fighting a losing battle

Tough competition lower prices newer technology. So that that model was never going to to work out for them

But so that is the MG4 now in China the urban edition whereas

Europe, UK, Ireland, Australia the MG4 still a good seller. It's still in

Great-looking care offers lots of practicality

And so in the UK anyway, they are going with the MG4

update 2026 with a slightly different spoiler and refreshed interior

nice upgrades on the screens, etc. And they're only going to have the

Premium trim which was originally called trophy and they're only going to go with the

Long range or extended range batteries. They're not going to offer the standard range

And so we don't know whether that's going to come to Ireland yet still in discussions still to be confirmed

The urban is coming to Ireland. No prices yet

So as you could see from

The videos that are up on the youtube channel. I'll put links in the description as well lots of interest thousands of views across both videos

And the urban is smaller batteries

Comfort trim comes in two battery sizes and the premium trim comes in the top battery size only

MG4 2026 update also comes in X power just going back to the original

Urban is taller. It is longer. It is bigger boot. It is yeah

Much more of a practical drive and even with the size of the batteries that are in this you're talking

Over 300 kilometers on the standard range battery and over 400 kilometers on the extended range battery real world probably talking

230 and 330

Like the extended range could very well real world go coast to coast

There's nothing urban about that

It's front wheel drive. It's on that e3 platform

Um same steering wheel smaller driver display, but it has the big display like the the updated urban and what we're sorry

The updated mg4 and what we're seeing in the s5 and soon s6 come into the Irish market in a couple of weeks

We got the invitation for the press launch today. Um, so yeah, it's great to get over videos are up on the channel

There'll be a there's a written review on the on the website and I'll be

having a feature in

The Irish Daily Star and mirror next week. So if you would like to read it in the papers, it will be there as well

Um, so that was the mg4 ev prices in the uk starting at just under 22 000 pounds after grants

And then it goes up 22 24 26

22 24 26. Yeah, and then roughly just underneath 30

For the updated mg4 premium

Long range and then that goes up to 32 995 and then for x power 33 995

I'm finding starting prices are pretty in line. We'll hope we get in here with our grant system, etc. So

um, that is that

Battery, uh, we might do the Ferrari. No, we'll do the c atl

news piece first. Um, and that is in relation to

C atl, which is a huge battery manufacturer and changon brand. We wouldn't know on Ireland, but it is the partner company with

Which mazda have brought out the 6e and they're a new suv that we saw in brussels as well

so the

Headline is c atl and changon make history with the world's first mass production sodium ion passenger ev

So changon chinese automobile company and battery giant c atl have unveiled the world's first mass produced passenger vehicle powered by

sodium ion

So we have lfp lithium phosphate. We have

nmc nickel manganese but sodium ion

Is something that isn't rare earth. Um, so it's very interesting

The launch event took place in near inner mongolia and the vehicle is scheduled to take to the market by mid this year

And so why is sodium ion batteries are gaining momentum?

So lithium ion batteries have dominated electric vehicle for more than a decade

However, concerns over lithium supply cost volatility environmental impacts have pushed researchers to explore alternatives

Sodium ion batteries emerge as one of the most promising contenders

Sodium is abundant widely distributed and inexpensive unlike lithium

It can be extracted from seawater common salt deposits reducing geopolitical geopolitical risks and environmental strain

This makes sodium ion batteries attractive for countries seeking greater energy independence

Cold weather performance is another major advantage lithium ion batteries lose significant capacity in freezing temperatures

Which ev limits ev adoption in colder regions now

Norway is a fairly good adopter of evs and that's pretty cold

sodium ion batteries by contrast maintain strong performance even in cold

extreme colds opening new markets for electric mobility

um, so what are the

um

pros and cons of both

Sometimes you hear about thermal runaway if a lithium battery goes on fire. It is difficult to extinguish. It needs to be submerged under water for

minimum 24 hours

Now, but it does have higher density

Whereas sodium does not have higher density. Um, lithium has limited notch

It's very it is tougher to get

captured that mineral

excavation

Um, refine whereas sodium is a bit more of an abundant material availability

The global sodium ion battery market could grow from 1.3 million us dollars in 2025 to 6.83 billion

In 2034 so in just nine short years it could quadruple

The catl naxtra sets new benchmarking for sodium ion performance

So catl began sodium ion research in 2016 and invested nearly 10 billion rmb in the program

The company developed close to 300,000 test cells and assembled a dedicated team of more than 300 rnd engineers including 20 phgs

Research focused on fast ion transport pathways

Composite low temperature electrolytes and high safety electrolyte systems

catl also leveraged its vast battery management data for millions of deployed units to improve range accuracy and reliability

The long-term investments highlights how major battery breakthroughs require years of sustained research testing and adjustment scaling

Under the partnership catl would use supply. It's naxtra sodium ion battery across changan's full brand lineup including

Which is one of their sub brands depal quinan and uni

The collaboration positions both companies as early leaders and what could become one of the most disruptive battery technologies in a decade

So urban and suburban evs maining more practical that sodium ion battery achieves an energy density of

170 watt hours per kilogram which currently sets a benchmark for mass produced sodium ion cells

It's lower than leading battery lithium ion batteries, but it's high enough to support practical passenger vehicles

So not as energy-gen so not as high performance

We've got that cold weather. We've got that safety

We potentially have dual chemistry future for electric mobility. So it's not about replacing lithium ion batteries

It's about about both companies being co-existent and complementary to each other

So have a keep an eye out for this. You've heard it here first on the nevo even use podcast

byd coming out as just battery after battery after us are chatting in ces last month and the

guys in donut labs and their solid state battery that

announcement and

third-party

Tests is going to be on the 20th of february. So next week. So

Unveils its solid state battery plans to rival upcoming the 2026 cherry exceed es 8 suiting break and exceed lefing

byd is the latest brand to get into the solid state battery seen with small batch production to get underway in 2027 only next year

And latest developments put byd back in the race against chinese rifle cherry

We don't have an island. They'd be the parent company for jacu omoda, etc

I've an omoda video going out on the channel actually a couple of days and recently announced solid state technology

The cherry exceed lefing shooting break will feature a battery offering a potential driving range of

1500 kilometers with an energy density of 600 watt hours per kilogram. This will launch after the exceed

e28 shooting break which will cherry's very first solid state model

With a driving range of a thousand kilometers

We do not know which vehicle byd will be fitting the solid state battery or real world potential yet

It's expected byd technology will differ from cherries as it would use sulfide electrolytes as opposed to oxide based chemistry

This different setup could be more practical route to commercial viability for solid state technology

As it claimed to be easier to manufacture and provides benefits such as faster

Safter energy transfer and could result in faster charging and lower fire risk

byd solid power solid state powered vehicles will only be available in small batches in 2027

Which suggests there are no plans yet for the technology for full scale production at the stage

Solid state batteries have begun gaining traction with car makers in china

But other big main manufacturers in europe and north america have been slower to get behind them

We've heard about toyota solid state batteries in a taxi only coming back from that mg4 event

Speaking of the mg4 urban the mg are talking about a semi solid state battery in china for that model as well

But the taxi driver he wasn't driving any uv

In the airport you can't request an electric vehicle from frino

lately for whatever reason but

Combustion taxi and i said oh what would you think about going electric and he goes i will when i get

Um

Solid state battery i've heard that they're bringing one out so

A brand man and he wants to say within the brand and he wants to get 1,500 kilometers from a solid state battery

General motors has highlighted skepticism for solid state

preferring to invest in silicon graphite batteries

While for views it as a possible future technology

Mercedes-benz unveiled as a prototype solid state battery version of the eqs sedan in september of last year which traveled

1,205 kilometers on a single charge

Fully full technology full integration into this technology remains several years away

With full market integration unlikely to occur to occur until the next decade

So two big battery stories to keep an eye on on the back of our doughnut exclusive interview

For the launch of the ferrari luce, which is the name for the electric ferrari. That's coming in may

Uh, but it was the unveil of the interior. So, uh, the interior and the interface for the ferrari luce

Uh, it went every element deeply considered to enable functionality intuitive interactions and a thrilling driver experience

As I mentioned, it was a host in san francisco ferrari shared its key interface components combining precision engineering mechanical buttons dials toggled switches with multifunctional digital displays

The luce name means light or illumination in italian

Whoever's listening to me. That's in that's an italian speaker. Let me know if that was a good or bad italian

Um pronunciation it signifies the brand's unwavering focus into the future and now naming new naming strategy for important addition to the ferrari range

Love from is the creative collective founded by designers

Sir on johnny ives and mark newson in san francisco

And they've been collaborating with ferrari in every dimension of ferrari luce of the ferrari luce design

So johnny ives is x apple and designer of

Excuse me a couple of the iconic iPhones, etc

In october 2025 the technology underpinning the car was unveiled at ferrari's e building and marinello

Third and final phase including the exterior reveal will launch in italy in 2026

So what they say is luce is more than a name. It's a vision. It's from ferrari speaks of luce

It's not defining a technology, but philosophy. There's a lot of marketing speaking here now

But when you do look at we put a video up on our socials and on the youtube channel got a great reaction

You can start to see three spoke steering wheel now not too impressed with indicator buttons on that steering wheel

multi-layered driver display central

Infotainment screen that can rotate left to right

That's good for driver slash passenger. That's also good for left-hand drive right-hand drive

So you don't have to go messing around with that

A gorgeous head unit that has a launch button that put you pull down like something in a fighter plane

physical toggle buttons physical switches

clucky clucky buttons

Absolutely all about it. And it's getting a great reaction. Yes, the ferrari

Enthusiasts and traditionalists will not be like

But that's Henry Ford said if you ask people 100 years ago what they wanted they would have said a faster horse

listen people have to evolve

sorry companies have to evolve to survive and

um, they will still no doubt make combustion engine traditional looking for areas for the people that want to spend it but

Fair play with them for taking the step as well. We're getting very close to jaguars of

Efforts and so you have to have to be applauded a lot of people will be

What did somebody say about the jaguar event that they were dropping their gin and tonics on the golf club house carpets?

It yeah, sometimes the target audience isn't the people that are crying the most it's a bit like ford capri

Uh, and people not happy with that name. Were they ever going to buy a ford capri? Uh, who knows?

Um, speaking of byd with their new batteries

We also have announcement from byd and the team at hall pure with regards to the

newest dealership bright motor group joins the byd dealer network

Renowned Dublin motor retailer bright motor group has been appointed as main dealer to represent byd as their distributor

for their new energy vehicles at ev byd trying to sneak in this terminology from china

um

so battery electric vehicles and plug and hybrids are dmi as they like to call it in

Byd land trading as byd airside the on operating from its prominently located dealership at airside motor park and swords

North county Dublin its appointment increases the byd national dealer network to 14 outlets overall

With a number of further appointments expected to be announced imminently

Vuld Ireland launches id promise offer on valentine's day

Volkswagen Ireland announces the launch of its new id promise 100 day drive and decide initiative

commencing from the 14th of february

That vehicle available across Volkswagen id range

doesn't include the id bose

The initiative allows eligible customers to transition to electric mobility and if it's not right fit return the vehicle between 180 days following

Following the handover once returned customers will be issued a refund less affair usage and depreciation free

Volkswagen Ireland's leader in battery technology bev mobility is pleased to announce the launch of its new promise

On return the customer will receive a refund minus reasonable cost like damage modification repair

5% fair usage and depreciation charge wallbox charger and a final finance deductions

The id promise offer is valid from the 14th of february to the 31st of may

So it's limited time only and it's available to retail customers across the following criteria, but not limited to id models

Uh, you must not exceed 5 000 kilometers available it to cash or voltswagen financial services customers only

And mentioned the id bose model is not included because that sits underneath voltswagen commercial vehicles. This is for passenger cars

Speaking on the announcement Alan Bateson director of voltswagen Ireland said as leaders in the Irish bev market

We are confident the id models offer an exceptional solution for customers considering the transition to electric driving

We also recognize that for some customers making the switch is easier when they can do so with complete confidence

In response to this we are very pleased to announce launch the id promise offer

Which allows new customers to experience their id models for up to 100 days

Providing the opportunity to gain confidence familiarity with electric mobility should the vehicle not meet their needs customers have the option to return it
