Porsche Rolls Back on EVs Nobody Wanted

I absolutely hit that button and my wife was on it. She goes, why are you recording our phone call?

I was like, huh? Feature though. You have to give permission on the other side.

Well, it gives it permission. You don't have to give them permission. It says it over the phone call and it's in the recording that says you are now being recorded.

That's sort of funny to bring that up because I remember when we started recording calls at work and we do it largely for transcription and it takes notes for us and it's fantastic.

I love recording calls. It's a work call. I want everything. I want to remember everything. It's really in co-pilot works fantastic for that.

It's amazing how much easier it makes my life on calls. It's funny how that became so normal now.

There was a huge thing about it when we first started privacy. We can't record calls.

We'll say the wrong thing. Now nobody's like, are we recording it? Make sure we're recording.

We just ran out of policy for that this week about how you have to get everybody's permission that's on the call in order to record in teams.

That's something brand new for us. We've never done that before and now it's getting more and more of a saying.

It's on by default now. We're just like, oh, something you forgot to turn on recording. That's so weird.

When I put my dental stuff, there's some stuff through Salesforce that does it and I've had to talk to this.

They're like, why are you recording this? And I'm like, well, first of all, I want to know what I said.

I want to know what you said. And then when you come back in six months and say I didn't say that, I'm going to be able to go.

Yeah, you did. Yeah, it makes sense for that. Yeah. Yeah. Absolutely.

I love a meeting notes. They're a godsend for time. Yeah. Yeah.

So let's talk about our Carter automotive group tip. This one specific I chose because it's a Subaru tip, sort of.

She's got a Forester Sport, which is amazing on gas mileage after you got out of a Raptor, by the way.

Yeah. The highest mileage vehicle in our household is my F-150 Raptor.

It's happened to me too now all of a sudden.

To be fair, I don't think Shauna or I have ever gotten above 10 in the R8.

I'm not even kidding. I think our highest is like 9.7.

That's so weird that a V10 would be sucking that much gas.

Yeah, and it spends 90% of its life bouncing off the refrigerator.

Okay, so speaking of speed, so the three of us owning Raptors,

we do have R buttons on our steering wheel.

What do we have our R buttons programmed for?

Full Baja mode.

I just switched it to Baja mode in mine for that.

So mine is, actually mine is set for sport.

Sport, suspension, sport, steering, for street.

But my steering wheel is on comfort.

It is.

It's full Baja, but then comfort steering.

Yeah, so mine is the same except I don't go, I still stay in two-wheel.

Yeah.

But I do put it in everything.

Like I open the exhaust up, you know, the big screen comes up there.

Off-road use only.

I'm like, screw you, I'm going to go this way anyway.

I've used it, but truthfully off-road once and it was the day

before everybody got to Moab and we were out.

And I went across that field.

That was the first time I had used R mode, which is nice.

Like I said, just hit the button and everything just kind of comes on.

Well, that's a good transition right now

because in good E news,

Porsche is rolling back as we all talked about,

said and suggested.

And once again, we do this for a living.

We actually know a few things.

We knew they were going to roll this back

because nobody wants an EV.

And I don't mean nobody.

I mean, most people don't.

It doesn't fit most people's use cases in the U.S.

Too far between we drive too much here

because we have no rapid transit.

So we sort of knew it was going to fail.

If you lived in the city, it made perfect sense.

If you drive a short commute relatively less than...

Oh, I don't know.

It doesn't even have to be that short,

like 75 miles each way.

You've got a lot of good options

and good reasons to have an EV in a place

like the Northwest.

But it made no sense for Porsche

to take this on outside of their SUVs.

Nobody wants an electrified box door came in.

I mean, I say that saying 1%,

somebody out there saying,

I was really dying for one.

Yeah, nobody else was.

Yeah, goodbye.

Yeah, congratulations.

That doesn't make a lot of sense for a manufacturer

to cater to the 1%

because at the end of the day,

they need to make money.

All Porsche does is cater to the 1%.

Well, except they are the 1%.

The 1% of that 1% was excited

about the electrified Porsches.

The hybrid and stuff makes sense.

They have to meet emissions.

Things have to go on.

I understand it.

I still don't like it because the weight keeps adding up.

I would be fine with it

if the weight didn't keep adding up.

But 4,000 pound 911s are just not...

Go drive an old one, drive a new one.

You'll be like, oh, yeah, this is better.

It is better.

It's not just you.

Light weight is great.

And I didn't realize this at the time

that the new 911 is a hybrid?

Hence the 4,000 pound Turbo S.

It's fast and the weight is low.

And Porsche has always done a good job

of beautifully engineering a chassis

and making everything work.

Porsche lives up to the hype.

We've said it since the beginning of the show.

All Porsches drive great.

But some drive a lot better than others.

And if you are in that market

or just starting out,

I tell everybody,

they always say, yeah, you were right.

Go drive an older Boxster Cayman.

Anyone...

It doesn't even have to be an S.

Just drive any one of them.

They're all fun to drive.

I don't care what kind of cars you've driven.

It's sort of like the...

It's the German Miata in that sense.

And obviously it's a higher end

with more torque and things like that.

But they all drive great.

But the really light early ones,

if you can get one that is

been taken care of and runs well,

they're just plain fun.

And there was that whole moniker

of the, you know,

Porsche's marketing toward, you know,

women, which was a slander

with the Boxster Cayman.

And then everybody drove them and was like,

these are great.

Everybody likes these.

I mean...

It's a German company and they

are very misogynistic.

So it doesn't surprise me.

But Porsche...

Porsche makes great cars,

but they need to go back to lightweight

and it's nice to see them pedaling

back from the EV nobody wanted.

I have a little Porsche news

that's been kind of interesting

that I've dug into.

So the world has been inundated

with the new GT3 RS,

which is an absolutely amazing car.

Not the one that landed in the river, right?

That one, too.

That's actually a part...

That's still funny.

That's kind of part of that story.

You know, that car's back up and running.

If anybody,

if you know about Porsche's

and things like that,

you know that they do a little bit

of paint protection from the factory.

It's horrible.

It yellows quickly.

And, you know,

and Porsche prides themselves

on being methodical

and getting things done.

And we're better than you kind of thing.

And I went into some of the forums

to kind of see if this was a thing

and talk to people.

Obviously, you know,

they don't like to talk to you

when you don't own one of the cars.

Just so we're clear.

I'm fine with that.

But this is...

But the issue is these people

are taking deliveries,

these GT3 RSs,

and they're taking them into their

PPF shops.

And Porsche has the GT3 moniker

along the door.

Well, the problem is

they're putting the PPF on first

and then the sticker,

which you'd go,

oh, that's not a big deal.

But Porsche is guarding these stickers

and they're $3,000 or $4,000.

And yes,

I know people are screaming at the radio

going, well, you can just have

somebody cut one out.

But if you want to keep your car original,

especially the Special Edition GT3 RS,

which is the white with the viper green...

Racing...

Is it lizard?

Lizard greener.

That's what it is.

But the problem is you pull off

that crappy PPF from Porsche,

it takes off half the sticker

and then you have to go through

like an approval...

Somebody was comparing it.

He said it was easier to get the car

than it was to get replacement stickers from Porsche.

Like to prove to them like,

I'm in your system.

And I want this, you know,

and in its huge delays

and people are in the middle of PPF

in their car and they're going,

so there's several driving

around the country right now

and I saw some photos of people that just have

their PPF,

but the bottom is the stickers cut off.

So back in the day

when I used to work for many,

many used to do the same thing.

They would check your van

before they would issue you JCW badges.

Oh, wow.

Yeah.

You know, like and because they didn't want to just,

you know, at the time,

I mean that was at the time

before BMW was fully taking over me, but...

Dynan did that too with their van.

They would check your van

to make sure that you were actually like legit.

And it was...

That's fine.

But my point is,

what I'm hearing is

you have to go to your dealership.

The dealership has to prove that you own the car

and then the dealership has to go to Porsche

and then they,

then Porsche puts it on them to go,

well, how did you check this

and why did you check this

and why, you know...

This is ridiculous.

And yeah, there are those people out there

who have their own plotters

and will cut their own stickers and things like that.

But the, you know,

the vinyl's not the same

and it's probably Porsche,

but it's just a simple thing where I go,

why wouldn't you put the sticker on first

and then put the...

Well, if you'd pull the sticker off anyway,

pull the PPF off, I think,

or at least you would...

The point is you should be able

to just put it on,

put the PPF on over it,

seal it in there

and then you don't have to worry

about the graphic becoming.

I remember replacing the PPF

and everybody bought it from 3M

like a stack on it?

They're going into these installers

we have to peel off

half of your sticker.

And then these poor people

are going to Porsche

oversight on Porsche

to not be thinking about it.

I was watching a video on YouTube

and we have to link it

it's a detailer

who does these videos.

They're like 13 to $15,000

details on these cars.

Because it's paint prep

to give them new stickers

you can go with it.

after options, you know?

that they test the cars,

where they keep it.

You'll see a lot of cars.

That's where the TFL guys

saw it.

A bunch of Ford,

a bunch of manufacturers

test cars,

specifically in Colorado

for the elevation.

And they go,

there's a lot of places

like pike speak that aren't

pike speaking,

take them and test the

braking like relentlessly.

And it's,

well, it's a road.

So it's free.

Yeah, there's one road

is just a little bit north of,

of Boulder that goes up

to Trail Ridge Road,

which is the highest paved

road in the U.S.

Yeah, it's a little over

12,000 feet.

That's a perfect place

to test, you know,

air consumption on a,

especially on a

fun road.

Done that road.

Yeah.

The lack,

the loss of horsepower

is insane.

It is like 70%.

It's not a little bit.

It's like,

like you lose all your

power.

Even with a turbo car.

back in the day when I was

riding with two wheels

and not four wheels,

I rode that road

from,

from the winter park side

up over the top

and then down into Loveland.

you lose air consistently

right out of here,

Even driving the R8,

which is by far the most

powerful car driven over

power even that lost.

Ranger he was overloaded.

back end up again

But that's an extra

250, 300 pounds

back there without any

gear then you're fully

loaded down with that

suspension.

we see it a lot in the

overlanding.

And you spend a lot of

time at these

overland fairs.

But we see so many

people that are going

higher and I'm like

that's going to

I don't understand that

concept right now.

Like that's your

center of gravity

goes up and that's

not good.

not use cases for it.

I get having the gear

but you can find

lightweight gear that

it's professional grade

which you probably could

but they have

professional grade systems

that are meant for

texts to do this

because your phone

works well

just as well as the

alignment machine

at this point

for stuff

it's not going to be

perfect for cars

like

but for most cars

it's like you said

watching Michael do it

you kind of

once you understand

how it all works

you're like oh

that actually is pretty

straightforward

especially if you have

a solid axle in the rear

of your truck

you have really

like that technology

the shock suspension

has changed

but how your rear

setup is not

and so

like centering your

axle

and getting your

alignment right

really is a pretty

it's

it's basic math

it's not advanced math

it's basic math

well it's also

my brain

still thinks it's

off

it's not

so does mine

it's not

like I can

put it on a straight

piece of freeway

and I can

let it

center itself in the

row

and that is

12 o'clock

in my brain

I'm you know

I kind of

liken it to

it's hard to center

punch a

Prius in the

fast lane

if my red stripe

is to the left

or to the right

I want to be

able to do

a crock

with a

pretty beefy bumper on it

it's always in the left

lane

and the

you know

he let the voice take over

and he just

plowed that

left lane

and I was just like

okay I know that's wrong

but God that was

satisfying to watch

could I watch that again

one of those a year

like one of them a year

where you go okay

yeah the dude was doing

like 50

wouldn't get to the way

there's a huge line

of cars behind him

so he just goes

whacking just moves him

just like pushes him

down the road

and shoves him off

I was like

I know it's a criminal

offense

but God I sympathized

with that guy
