00:00
What's up, Subi fan?
00:11
This is Jonathan, aka Stage The Cross Trek, and you're listening to episode 211 on the Subian
00:20
Welcome to another episode of the Subian U Podcast.
00:24
I have Jonathan on, as you just heard, and he's coming back as a returning guest 100 episodes
00:33
So yeah, his first episode was 111.
00:37
He's back on episode 211.
00:40
So we've been doing this thing for a while, and it was great to have him on again, and
00:46
it was great to record with him and catch up because he used to live up in New England,
00:52
and now he lives in Austin, Texas, here in my home state.
00:56
So it was great to catch up with him and see what's changed since he has moved locations
01:03
and just what's going on in his life and his Subi life now because it's much different
01:09
than it was up there.
01:11
Also thank you so much, Jonathan, for taking the time to record with me and come back
01:15
on to share your experience.
01:18
We will get into this conversation here in just a bit, but first, a word from one of our
01:23
The Subian U Podcast is brought to you by Accentric Designs.
01:28
For those of you who don't know, Accentric Designs is a small, community-driven business
01:33
that offers custom-fit vinyl overlays for most Subaru models.
01:37
This includes various designs for the rear reflectors, tail lights, and side tail
01:41
I also offer fun, detailed designs like the popular fender stripes and stickers.
01:46
To find designs for your Subi, head on over to AccentricDesigns.com.
01:50
There's always more projects in the works, so be sure to follow at Accentric.designs
01:56
As always, thank you so much Accentric Designs for sponsoring the Subian U Podcast.
02:01
Be sure to go check her out on Instagram if you're not already following her and
02:05
check out her website, AccentricDesigns.com, and see what she has to offer for your
02:12
If you happen to see my story on Pearl's page on Sunday, I posted a photo of my OEM
02:20
shifter knob back on my shifter, and the custom shift knob was sitting off to the
02:28
side, and there's a reason for that.
02:30
So I will explain that next Monday in the Subi scoop, so be sure to tune in then
02:38
to hear the story about what's going on with me putting the custom shift knob
02:44
I had a few people ask me if I was trading Pearl in or selling her, and no, that is
02:50
I cannot do that and will not do that.
02:54
So yeah, just tune in next Monday for the Subi scoop to hear about what's going on.
03:00
For those of you that went to Boxerfest this past weekend, I hope you had a really
03:05
I hope you got to see some friends again, meet some new people, see some rally
03:09
drivers and other personalities, and of course, see some great Subarus.
03:16
I hope to make it out to Boxerfest again at some point.
03:19
I went out there in 2021, but I've had people ask me if I'm going to come out
03:23
to Boxerfest or Wicked Big Need or Subifest California or Subifest Florida,
03:29
Subifest Midwest, and it's just not easy to make it out to all of the events.
03:35
So hopefully I'll make it out again at some point, but I will be at Overland
03:40
Expo in Virginia, and that's going to be October 3rd through 5th.
03:47
And so I'm really looking forward to that.
03:48
It's going to be a great time.
03:50
I'm going to get to see some people again and meet.
03:54
It sounds like a lot of new people, so I'm really, really excited
03:57
about that, and I'm just forever grateful for this opportunity to be going out
04:02
there and to be invited out to the Overland Expo events.
04:06
So I'm super excited about that.
04:08
But going back to Boxerfest, I know that two of my sponsors were there at
04:13
One of them, of course, being SubaruGear.com.
04:17
I know that they have a lot of great merch that they've released recently.
04:21
So please go check out SubaruGear.com, browse through the site.
04:24
There's also a button that says New.
04:27
If you click on New, it'll take you through all of the new merchandise that
04:30
they've put out, and they're continuously adding new items.
04:35
So go check it out.
04:38
Use the code SUBIENU25 at checkout to get 20% off your purchase.
04:43
And if the total is over $50 after the 20% discount, you automatically
04:50
And that is such a great deal to save that money on shipping.
04:53
Of course, as always, thank you so much SubaruGear.com for sponsoring
04:57
the SUBIENU podcast and bringing this great offer to all the listeners.
05:01
The other sponsor that was at Boxerfest is Subimods.
05:05
Subimods most likely had their big giant setup there.
05:10
I know they had some of their people out there working the booth and
05:13
working their setup and selling merch and talking to people.
05:16
And then also, if you've seen some of their posts recently,
05:20
they did a couple of posts with Adventure One.
05:23
So it looks like they are moving into the off-road and
05:27
overland scene potentially.
05:29
So keep an eye out for more posts like that.
05:32
That's really, really exciting.
05:34
They already offer products for the Crosstrek, for the Alback,
05:39
for the Forester and the Ascent.
05:41
So go browse through the site, see what they have to offer.
05:44
But of course, their biggest selling products are for
05:48
the tuner scene, which is absolutely great because there's so
05:51
many different Subarus out there that are offered and
05:54
that people are driving around and having fun with.
05:57
And Subimods is such a great place to get so
06:00
many different products all in one spot.
06:03
Be sure to check out their memberships that they have as well to
06:05
save money on your purchases.
06:08
You can go back and listen to their episodes with when I had Subimods on,
06:13
I had Ryan Stanson from Subimods where he talks a little bit more about that.
06:17
Overall, it's a great company, great group of people and
06:20
I'm very honored to have them as a sponsor of the podcast.
06:23
So thank you so much Subimods for sponsoring the Subi and you podcast.
06:27
And now that we have all that out of the way,
06:29
we can get into this conversation with Jonathan,
06:32
aka Sage the Crosstrek and catch up with him and
06:35
see what's been going on in his life.
06:37
So let's get into that conversation now.
06:38
What's up, Jonathan?
06:42
What's up, what's up, Brad? How you doing?
06:46
Long time no see and long time no talk, huh?
06:49
I know, I know, it's been a while.
06:51
Man, welcome back to the podcast.
06:53
It's been, what, a hundred episodes?
06:56
A hundred episodes, man.
06:58
I know it's been a while.
07:00
Man, welcome back to the podcast.
07:03
It's been, what, a hundred episodes?
07:07
A hundred episodes now.
07:08
Yeah, it's been, God, it's been almost...
07:14
We recorded the first one.
07:16
What was it, in 22 or 23?
07:18
Yeah, it was a while back.
07:26
Yeah, so when we recorded your episode in 2023, it was March 6th.
07:31
Well, that's when I released it.
07:32
That's not necessarily when we recorded,
07:34
but we probably recorded it at the end of February, maybe.
07:38
But yeah, your episode released Monday, March 6th, 2023,
07:43
a hundred episodes ago.
07:48
It's crazy to say that a hundred episodes have gone by
07:51
because I mean, now I'm at 211.
07:54
And over four and a half years later, it's...
07:59
A lot of things have changed.
08:01
Yeah, it's been great.
08:03
And I'm thankful to still be doing it.
08:07
Thankful people are still listening,
08:09
and thankful that I still have guests.
08:11
And I know one of the things that I wanted to do for this year
08:14
was get some previous guests back on,
08:16
and I've been doing that.
08:17
So that's been good.
08:20
So when we recorded the last time,
08:25
you were living in the Northeast,
08:28
and now you're living in Texas.
08:32
I was living in the tiny state of Rhode Island
08:35
that nobody even knows.
08:37
So whenever someone asked me where I'm from here in Texas,
08:41
I always say I'm from Rhode Island,
08:43
and they look at me like I have 10 heads,
08:45
and I'm like 45 minutes south of Boston.
08:48
They're like, oh, okay.
08:50
So let me ask you a question.
08:54
Does it take about the same amount of time
08:56
to drive all the way across Austin
08:58
that it does to drive all the way across Rhode Island?
09:03
Yeah, that's crazy.
09:05
It's such a tiny state.
09:07
You can literally, like in the middle of the night,
09:10
you can literally go from the top of Rhode Island
09:12
to the bottom of Rhode Island in 30, 45 minutes.
09:15
That says nobody on the highway,
09:17
and you don't care about how fast you're going,
09:19
and cops, you can just folks.
09:22
45 minutes, you're from one end to the other.
09:25
That's crazy because in Houston,
09:28
in the middle of the night,
09:30
there's nobody on the freeway.
09:32
It takes probably an hour or more
09:34
to get from one side of Houston to the other,
09:36
like proper Houston city limits
09:39
from one end to the other.
09:41
Yeah, that's funny.
09:47
What has the transition been like for you
09:49
moving from all the way up there to Austin?
09:52
Because that's a pretty big change.
09:55
First of all, it's not like you're just moving
09:58
from somewhere else in New England.
10:00
You're moving to like the central part of the U.S.
10:04
in the second biggest state in the U.S.
10:07
And a pretty cool city.
10:10
Yeah, Austin's not bad.
10:13
I've only been here for just over a year,
10:16
and I haven't really explored much of the city.
10:22
Only because it just takes so long
10:26
that from one place to the other,
10:28
because traffic's crazy.
10:30
Not to say that traffic in Boston and New York isn't crazy,
10:33
because the traffic that's on 35 going through Austin
10:37
is nothing compared to what happens on 95 in New York
10:48
By the time you figure out,
10:50
oh, you have a reservation at a restaurant for 7 p.m.,
10:53
at like 4.30, 5 o'clock.
10:57
Because there's gonna be traffic.
10:59
Are you talking about up there?
11:04
I don't live in Austin, so I don't know how bad it is, but...
11:07
No, it just gets...
11:11
I know what you mean.
11:12
It's just crazy how sometimes you just don't move.
11:17
And it's just like, why?
11:18
And it's just because two people,
11:20
it just squeezes from a four lane down to a two lane,
11:22
because of construction.
11:23
And two people decided that they wanted to do 20 miles an hour.
11:28
It can be annoying.
11:31
But the transition, it's been nice.
11:37
It's the normal New England August heat,
11:41
that heat wave temperature that you get
11:43
in like high 90s to low 100s.
11:45
But that's all here.
11:52
Instead of just having like a one or two weeks,
11:54
like it happens in New England,
11:56
it's like months of that.
11:58
So I'm still trying to get used to that.
12:03
It's not, but other than that,
12:08
I bought my first pair of cowboy boots.
12:14
You know what's funny is,
12:15
I've lived in Texas my entire life,
12:17
never owned a pair of cowboy boots.
12:19
They're just not my thing.
12:21
I never have and I never will.
12:24
I only wear them once a week maybe.
12:29
I wear them to work and that's about it.
12:33
I've heard people say that they're comfortable,
12:38
They're just not me.
12:39
Surprisingly, they are comfortable.
12:42
And I'll stand and I'll work on my feet all day
12:45
in the cowboy boots.
12:47
Oh, my God, pretty comfortable.
12:50
But going back to the transition,
12:53
yeah, no, it's been fun.
12:59
Definitely the car scene here
13:01
is completely different than New England.
13:06
Yeah, we've talked some before
13:09
about how you're driving around
13:11
in the only built-up cross-track
13:14
and probably in all of Austin.
13:17
Yeah, there's probably lifted ones
13:20
with alterings and method wheels
13:23
and stuff like that,
13:24
but not lifted to where I am
13:28
and lights and body armor
13:30
and all that stuff on it.
13:34
So I do get the looks
13:36
and it's sometimes...
13:37
To me, it's funny because I get the looks
13:39
from the lifted Jeep guys
13:43
and all the lifted construction Tup guys
13:46
and they look at me just going down the highway
13:49
and doing an 85 on the toll roads
13:53
in the lifted cross-track
13:59
So other than the transition moving here,
14:03
what has it been like as far as...
14:06
Because were you doing a decent amount of off-roading
14:10
and meeting up with people up there
14:12
and then now that not having that here,
14:17
Yeah, like up back home it was...
14:20
We were going sometimes twice a month.
14:25
Sometimes twice a month.
14:27
It all depended on like, hey,
14:30
you guys want to hit the trails.
14:34
And it's randomly...
14:36
Sometimes we wouldn't even hold an event.
14:38
We would just send the text messages
14:40
to a couple guys, hey, you want to go hit the trails?
14:42
And they're like, yep, let's go.
14:45
There are no trails, first of all.
14:47
Yeah, here are no trails.
14:53
You feel my pain now.
14:56
I unfortunately, like you said,
15:00
in the Scooby Scoob,
15:03
Bastrop pretty much got closed down.
15:06
So we can't go there anymore.
15:09
We can, but at risk and it's not worth it.
15:13
It's not worth anything, but it's not worth the risk.
15:18
But yeah, I was only able to take my car twice onto Bastrop.
15:25
The one time that we went and then back in March,
15:28
which is the last time I went.
15:30
And Bastrop is a decent spot.
15:32
I mean, it's got some technical stuff in there.
15:35
And it's not very far away from us,
15:40
like a little over an hour and a half, but it's just...
15:43
Yeah, I'm 45-ish minutes away from it.
15:48
Okay, are you Northern Austin?
15:54
I'm a great major manor.
15:55
So if I take 290, I go into Houston.
15:59
Okay, yeah, so, yeah, I mean,
16:02
Bastrop was, it was nice.
16:04
I think I've been out there maybe like 5 or 6 times
16:08
and I kept wanting to go more.
16:10
It was just one of those things where I had other stuff going on
16:13
or I just wouldn't think about it.
16:15
And then, so there's up and near,
16:20
it's kind of like more on the,
16:22
it's in between Dallas and Fort Worth,
16:24
but more on the Fort Worth side,
16:26
there's a place called Bridgeport
16:28
and there's an off-road trail
16:30
or an off-road park there,
16:32
which you have to pay for
16:34
I think it's like 25 bucks for the day or something.
16:37
But it's, you know, it's fun.
16:38
It's worth it, but it's just, it's far.
16:41
But yeah, but you guys,
16:42
you would have to drive all the way out to
16:46
like the Fort Worth area.
16:48
Yeah, I mean, for me,
16:49
that's like a four and a half hour drive
16:51
to go off-roading in a spot
16:52
that I'm actually allowed to go off-roading in.
16:55
And just meet off-road for that day
16:58
and then go back home kind of thing.
17:03
So right, so right now like,
17:11
it's been, yeah, so it's been hard
17:13
trying to find places to go to off-roading.
17:16
We just had Bastrop that unfortunately
17:19
it's not worth the risk anymore.
17:21
And then there's, there's Hidden Falls,
17:24
which I believe you spoke about before.
17:27
There's a new place called
17:33
that I'm actually trying
17:38
to set up events there.
17:43
And then there's a couple other places.
17:46
There's like rally ready,
17:47
but it's more like rally kind of stuff.
17:50
You can drive your own car there,
17:52
but it's like a hundred bucks to go rally on there.
17:55
Because it's not like,
17:56
it's not designed for like,
17:58
hey, let's just go off-roading for the day.
18:03
there is a place in like southern,
18:05
in like the southern part of San Antonio
18:10
that I just found out about
18:13
and see if they're interested in hosting
18:16
like small off-roading events
18:18
because you can go there for like the day
18:22
25 bucks, 30 bucks kind of thing.
18:26
It's only an hour and a half away from me, south.
18:31
Like Hidden Falls and Domo Motorsports,
18:36
about between an hour to hour,
18:39
hour and a half from me.
18:42
And that's going north from me.
18:44
Just trying to figure out
18:49
when it comes to like off-roading now.
18:52
Hidden Falls, I've never been out there,
18:54
but even years ago,
18:56
when I first started hearing about it from people,
18:59
they were saying that
19:01
the easier courses,
19:03
like the ones are like
19:05
even kind of getting rotted out and stuff.
19:10
They're getting really washed up.
19:13
Subaru friendly as it used to be.
19:17
and I forgot the name of it,
19:18
but it's north of Houston,
19:21
and it's about an hour and a half from me.
19:24
And it's the very first place
19:25
that I took Pearl off-road.
19:29
I think that was the first episode I listened
19:31
when you were talking about that.
19:36
are you sure you might get stuck?
19:38
I pulled up to the gate
19:39
and the guy was kind of looking at my car
19:42
and I think I asked him like,
19:45
is it okay if I go in there
19:48
my car the way it is?
19:50
I've been told not to turn anybody away.
19:52
He said some Mercedes had gone in there
19:54
and he said a Mercedes SUV
19:59
that was all-wheel drive
20:02
and did totally fine
20:03
and had a good time.
20:05
So that was before anything.
20:10
I think I had my car
20:11
for like three weeks.
20:12
I didn't even have any decals on it.
20:17
no airing down the tires
20:18
and I went through sand
20:19
and I was getting a little nervous
20:25
well, it was some time before that.
20:27
I watched where 4x4
20:29
Subi had gone out to some sand dunes
20:31
and aired down his tire,
20:33
had all-terrain tires
20:35
and got stuck in sand.
20:39
I was thinking about that the entire time.
20:42
I really hope I don't get stuck
20:43
because I don't really have a way to get out.
20:49
and just went out there driving
20:51
I didn't go too far into the park.
20:54
like now I would be more,
20:59
and know enough about my car
21:01
and capabilities and everything
21:02
that I could go further out
21:05
and do some exploring.
21:07
But I didn't go too far in there
21:10
And that's something
21:11
that I've been wanting to do too
21:12
is get some people together
21:13
and look at that park again
21:16
hey, let's all go meet up there
21:17
and air down our tires
21:19
and go have some fun.
21:23
And I think it was only,
21:24
like, 30 bucks for the day.
21:28
Yeah, that's not bad.
21:29
Yeah, the Doma Motor Sports one,
21:34
I want to say it's like
21:38
and then you can camp there.
21:42
Yeah, so you can go there
21:43
like Saturday morning,
21:45
set up camp off-road all day.
21:50
You can off-road at night.
21:51
You can do the trails at night.
21:53
Have certain trails
21:54
that you can do at night
21:57
and you can still do trails the next day
21:59
and then just leave.
22:03
See if you can secure that.
22:07
So from the time that you
22:10
what else have you done with Sage?
22:12
What have you changed?
22:13
What have you added?
22:16
What's going on with Sage now?
22:20
she hasn't really gotten much.
22:27
All that I've really done was
22:31
the Falcon Wild Peaks.
22:33
That's what I thought.
22:34
Yeah, you've got different tires.
22:41
tire company from like Taiwan.
22:43
They're called the Celera.
22:45
And the brand is called the
22:46
Celera A-C-C-E-L-R-A.
22:50
And then the model of the tire are
23:02
And they're cross-train tires.
23:06
super, super grippy,
23:09
like the Texas Mud Clay
23:13
Does not get stuck in those
23:15
tire threads at all.
23:20
how nice the tire threads are.
23:22
And the only reason why I got those tires
23:24
is because I went to
23:33
four-wheel parts store here in Austin.
23:35
And a couple of Jeep guys were there
23:37
and I was talking to them
23:43
so we walked over to Sage
23:45
and they were talking
23:49
I was talking about
23:51
wanting to upgrade tires
23:53
and get better tires.
23:54
And then they told me they're like,
23:56
oh, check out these tires.
24:00
They're super grippy.
24:02
They're perfect for the
24:04
frame here in Texas with the
24:10
for your car, they're gonna be perfect
24:12
because they'll help you get up
24:14
like deeper inclines
24:16
than what you could before with these.
24:18
I was like, alright, I'll give them a try
24:24
the smallest size they make is a 16.
24:30
Cross-Tex Sport Wheels.
24:34
And I think they cost
24:36
they were under a hundred bucks each.
24:39
Yeah, that was what I was wondering because
24:42
when I bought my first set
24:48
when I bought my second set
24:50
they were 165 and I was like
24:52
this is crazy because I only
24:54
I had a full-size spare that
24:56
because I had a flat and I got a
24:58
new spare and I because I had the new spare
25:00
I didn't wasn't rotating
25:02
it through my tires anymore.
25:04
So I'm like I'm just gonna keep it up here
25:06
until I get a new set and then when I get
25:08
a new set I'll start rotating it through
25:10
and never ended up doing that but
25:12
so I only had to buy four tires and it was
25:14
still like 950 bucks for the four
25:16
tires and that's what I paid the last
25:18
time for five. I was like, man, this is
25:22
and like I said they make
25:24
smallest one I made is a 16
25:26
I make a 17, 18, I think
25:28
they go up to a 20.
25:30
For like the bigger trucks and stuff like that.
25:32
Yeah. They're 8-by.
25:38
sponsored or anything like that. I love the tires.
25:40
I'm gonna leave a link to where I got the
25:42
tires from in my vial to whoever wants
25:44
like if you're running
25:48
the new cross-track, the new cross-track
25:50
wilderness that you can't go
25:52
to a 7, you can't get a
25:54
16, 15 you can go I think
25:56
16 probably without
25:58
changing the brakes around.
26:00
But if you want to stick with the 17s
26:02
you can get this tire and
26:04
they fit perfectly. They fit in
26:08
will also fit in the
26:16
they will also fit in there.
26:20
they're perfect and you might have to
26:22
cut a little bit of the
26:24
bottoms of the bumpers
26:26
to make them fit. Okay.
26:28
But other than that they'll fit perfect
26:32
That's if you don't
26:34
if you don't want to go down to a
26:40
the only other thing I got
26:42
was a transmission cooler.
26:48
Okay. I installed a
26:50
transmission cooler, made a
26:52
world of a difference here in Texas with the heat.
26:58
mentioned cars and coffees, how many of those
27:00
have you been going to? Because I know you post some
27:02
and I'm like, oh, I would love
27:04
to go out there, but it's like at 8 a.m.
27:08
I'm not going to get up and
27:10
to be there. Every single
27:12
cars and coffees event, I always start at 8 a.m.
27:14
in the morning, like 8 in the morning
27:16
and I'm like, just make them start
27:18
a little bit later. But I
27:20
guess it's smart to start
27:22
in here in Texas early
27:24
because you don't want to be in the
27:26
heat in the meantime
27:28
because they usually die out, like between
27:30
like 10 and 11, they'll die out
27:32
the cars and coffees events.
27:34
Yeah. And that's, the temperature's not
27:36
as unbearable then.
27:38
Yeah. It's a little more manageable.
27:40
The last couple of days
27:42
I've been in the 60s in the morning.
27:44
It's been so nice. Yeah.
27:46
I'm like, yes. And then I get out of work
27:48
and it's 100 degrees. Yeah.
27:50
I know that that's the thing that sucks is like
27:52
the day will start off beautiful
27:54
and cool and a nice breeze
27:56
and low humidity and
27:58
this feels so good.
28:00
And like you said, the end of the day
28:02
after work, you get outside and it's
28:04
like upper 90s, the humidity
28:06
has gone up and you're like
28:08
what happened to that beautiful weather
28:10
this morning? Like right now it's
28:14
it's still said it's 85 degrees
28:16
outside here in Austin. Yeah.
28:18
I have no doubt it's
28:20
about the same here too.
28:26
I get the funny looks in the winter
28:28
time because I'll go outside
28:32
Yeah. I know that's
28:34
because like I get cold really easily.
28:36
I guess maybe I got that from my mom
28:40
Yeah. It looks like
28:42
it'll get down to like 70
28:44
and I'm putting a hoodie on not
28:46
necessarily because I'm cold, but like
28:50
the slight bit of chill
28:52
and a little bit of wind and
28:54
I just I love hoodies and so
28:56
I'm like any excuse to wear a hoodie
28:58
I'm going to do it. Same. Same.
29:00
My wife keeps the temperature
29:04
Yeah, that's insane.
29:06
Like at like 8 o'clock I'll do a hoodie on.
29:08
Yeah. That's just crazy
29:12
I mean I keep mine at 72 so
29:14
it's not too far off
29:16
but I remember going to my step brother's
29:18
house because they wanted me to house it
29:20
and I walk in and I'm like
29:22
man what is this a refrigerator or something
29:24
and I go over to this
29:26
thermostat and it's at 69 and I'm like
29:28
this is just crazy. I didn't turn it up
29:30
but maybe I turned it up while
29:32
I was there because I'm like I'm not doing
29:38
Well, since we have
29:40
we have three dogs.
29:42
Oh, okay. And we have four cats.
29:54
We literally got her
29:56
walking out of Walmart here in Texas.
29:58
Really? Just kind of wandered over to you?
30:00
No, out of our local Walmart.
30:02
We were walking out of our local Walmart.
30:06
alright, so let me backtrack.
30:08
Okay. So December of last
30:12
got my hip replaced, my left hip replaced.
30:14
So I was out of work
30:20
beginning of February.
30:22
In January, my wife and I
30:24
were at our local Walmart and we were leaving
30:26
and I was waiting for her at the doors
30:28
for her to bring her car up to the door
30:30
for me to get in. Yeah. As I'm getting
30:32
in, a red pickle truck
30:36
the front and just stops
30:38
and two people get out of the car and we're like
30:40
oh crap. And they walk to the
30:42
back of the pickle truck to the back
30:44
doors and they take out a crate
30:50
They were like, okay, the puppies are
30:52
free. We're like, what? And I'm in
30:54
the car already. My wife's going around
30:56
the truck and the lady's like, free
30:58
puppies? My wife goes, are they really for free?
31:00
And the lady goes, yes.
31:02
And before my wife could even say
31:04
John, can we look at them?
31:06
I was already out the car
31:08
walking without a walker
31:10
because I was less than
31:12
a month out of surgery.
31:14
Geez. Boy, that puppy love, man.
31:20
a Chihuahua mix, but she's
31:24
Australian cattle dog. So she has
31:36
to her. Oh yeah. Like a hurting dog.
31:38
So when we take her out,
31:40
she's constantly biting the ankles
31:42
of the other two pit bulls.
31:44
She's biting their ankles
31:46
starting fights with them outside.
31:48
And I'm like, you are the little dog
31:50
trying to fight two big dogs.
31:54
all three of your dogs and all four
31:56
of your cats, do they all intermingle
31:58
and are chill with each other?
32:00
Yeah. They all get along with each other.
32:02
That's great. Yeah.
32:04
Yeah. We got all four cats
32:08
We got them during COVID.
32:12
Our oldest pit bull Ace
32:20
the August before COVID hit.
32:26
for when we got all four cats
32:30
So he pretty much raised the kittens
32:32
the whole time. That's cool.
32:34
Yeah. And then our other pit bull
32:50
Ace in them because of the way he raised them.
32:54
Are you going to be going to CBFest this year?
32:58
I'm going to CBFest this year.
33:00
Hopefully they pick me for the show.
33:04
bought tickets last year
33:06
got proof of the show
33:08
paid for the ticket for the show
33:10
and then life happened
33:12
so I had to cancel going
33:14
to CBFest last year.
33:16
Yeah. I didn't think you had made it.
33:22
no take a rain check
33:28
You're not messing this one up for me.
33:30
So hopefully in a couple weeks
33:32
I got an email saying that I was approved
33:34
for CBFest to be in the show.
33:36
Yeah. Hopefully so. Because it's coming up.
33:38
Yeah. It's coming up in
33:42
So right at a month.
33:48
Yeah. I just booked my Airbnb
33:54
Last time we stayed at an Airbnb
33:56
and so I figured we'll do that again this year.
34:06
some of the people, some of my
34:10
from the super community that live
34:12
in San Antonio area
34:14
we got us, we're getting
34:16
an Airbnb there too.
34:18
I want to say it's like
34:20
15, 30 to 15 minutes
34:22
away from Lone Star Park.
34:24
Yeah. I think it's not
34:26
that far. Yeah. I think the one that I got
34:28
is maybe 20 minutes or less.
34:30
So that'll be nice.
34:32
Yeah. Are you going up there Friday?
34:34
That Friday right? Yeah.
34:36
I'm going to leave after work that Friday
34:40
Get in a little bit late I guess
34:42
and then head over in the morning.
34:44
Wicked Big Meat was coming up. You told me
34:46
that you're going to be going up there.
34:52
only two other people
35:00
I was going up there
35:02
for Wicked Big Meat.
35:04
Everybody like the people
35:06
that I know here in the Subaru community
35:08
down here in Texas, they
35:10
knew I was going up there but they didn't know
35:12
the whole reason why
35:14
I was going up there. They knew
35:16
because my brother lives in Connecticut
35:18
and we have friends and family
35:20
that live in Rhode Island and stuff like that.
35:22
So I was like, oh yeah this
35:24
weekend I can't wait.
35:26
I'm going up next weekend to
35:28
visit some family and friends
35:30
and stuff like that. We haven't seen them in over a year.
35:34
literally only people
35:38
that I was going from
35:42
for Wicked Big Meat was
35:50
from South Coast Trek.
35:52
Those are the only two guys
35:54
that knew I was going
36:04
at the Suvi Fest, the pre-meat
36:10
on that Saturday and it was
36:12
raining. It was like
36:14
pouring rain that whole morning
36:16
like the night before to that morning it was
36:18
raining and it was like
36:20
overcast and it was like crappy weather
36:24
It sucked for like a car meet
36:28
But it was packed. That whole parking lot
36:30
was packed with cars. Everybody showed up
36:34
Bucky was there. Bucky was walking around
36:36
saying hi to everybody.
36:40
they were raffled off
36:44
and skateboard deck and a bunch of other stuff.
36:52
Brennan know I was in constant communication
36:54
with Brennan trying to figure out where they were
36:56
so when I got there
37:00
which sucked. It was a Ford F-150
37:06
get to why it sucked
37:10
get to the part where I ended up at
37:14
So when I get there
37:16
because it's not a Subaru first of all
37:20
That's the biggest thing that sucked
37:24
It was the wrong blue oval.
37:26
The wrong blue oval.
37:34
Brennan was there with
37:44
Sam the Wandering Claws
37:46
and he was there with
37:48
yeah, he was there with Hunter
37:58
and I ran into Scott
38:04
and then we were walking around talking and then we were
38:08
and they're like alright
38:10
I think I saw Sam so he's walking back to his car
38:14
was there with like a rain
38:16
jacket and like a hat
38:18
so I just put the hood on
38:20
with the rain jacket and I just looked like the killer
38:22
like the serial killer from like I know what you did
38:24
the last summer just walking around
38:28
and then I come up behind Sam and I scare him
38:30
and he's like oh my
38:32
what are you doing here and I'm like
38:34
we gave a big hug and everything
38:36
and just hung out talk the whole time
38:44
grabbed some hot dogs and burgers and stuff like that
38:46
for everybody at the campsite
38:48
and then went to the campsite
38:50
that everybody was staying at that
38:52
adventure one was staying at
38:56
I drove they had two campsites
39:02
and I kept going up the hill to the second campsite
39:08
thing that made me upset
39:16
and it still got stuck in the mud
39:22
it got stuck in the mud
39:24
going into the campsite
39:30
so what I'm going to read now
39:34
one of the guys that was there
39:40
which is Adam who goes by
39:42
Transformer traffic
39:48
how surprised are you guys when you saw me
39:52
seeing some random white Ford truck
39:54
pull up to the campsite and immediately get stuck
39:56
in the mud was the best possible entrance
40:00
oh man that's awesome
40:02
because we both know
40:04
we've literally gone right through that
40:06
without any effort at all
40:12
I mean any time I go
40:18
there will be a big spot
40:22
where it's just all around me
40:24
and I'll just go and stop in the middle of it
40:26
and then I'll start driving
40:28
it just goes right through it
40:32
all the time even though it's like I know it's going to do it
40:36
I'll stop in the middle of the mud
40:38
and then I'll start driving and it just goes
40:40
it's crazy but it's awesome
40:42
and then he goes on to saying that
40:44
they were all standing there wondering
40:46
who this random person
40:48
that is spitting up mud from the tires
40:50
and a few seconds later
40:52
out pops my friend John
40:56
saves the cross trick without the cross trick
41:00
back to some backwards campsite
41:02
in Connecticut to surprise all of us
41:06
he goes I am immediately
41:08
shocked and he starts
41:12
what are you doing here
41:16
those are some of the best surprises
41:22
I want to say it was like midnight
41:24
that night around the campfire
41:26
and then everybody was
41:28
most of the guys were either
41:30
part of adventure ones booth
41:32
so they had to be there super early
41:36
or were in the car and show themselves
41:38
and had to be there super early
41:42
yeah so it was tough
41:44
but yeah the next morning
41:48
super stressful for me because
41:52
I go to start the car to go
41:58
to go down to the bathrooms
42:00
to shower and everything like that
42:02
before I go to the show
42:08
oh my god what the hell
42:10
put a jump box on it
42:14
cool I get in the car
42:16
note the dashes off
42:18
the dash isn't working because it's a digital dash
42:20
so it's not working
42:36
the only the rear windows went down
42:38
what did you do to this truck man
42:40
nothing I just tried starting it
42:44
the truck was so upset
42:46
and distraught that it couldn't
42:48
go through the mud that it just decided
42:50
not to have anything
42:54
that's what it was the truck was just really upset
42:58
embarrassed that knowing
43:02
all the other cars there could easily
43:04
make it through and then
43:08
be there and show up in shame
43:10
and get stuck that's what it was
43:12
so he's like screw you buddy
43:14
I'm not gonna work for you
43:16
like I wanted to show up with a pickup truck
43:18
because I didn't want an SUV or anything like that
43:20
most likely it would have been like
43:22
a little Chevy Blazer
43:24
or Equinox or whatever
43:26
so I was like no I want a pickup truck
43:28
and they're like we're all out of Tacoma
43:32
yeah that would have done much better
43:38
when I went to the last Overland Expo
43:44
and with National they have
43:46
the uh I forget what it's called
43:50
oh what am I thinking
43:52
because I know they have like they have executive
43:54
they have executive so basically
43:56
so the way National works is whatever level
43:58
of car you get because there's like executive
44:00
and then there's like premium or something like that
44:02
like the higher end
44:04
and then there's another one
44:06
that's like just the normal and I can't remember
44:08
the name of it but you go and you just pick
44:10
whichever car you want
44:12
and I walked all up and down
44:14
looking to see if there were any Subaru's
44:16
because there has been one time
44:22
and they had a Forester
44:24
so I'm like maybe by chance
44:26
there'll be like one random Subaru in here
44:30
so I ended up getting into
44:34
and for some reason
44:36
like I couldn't get the
44:38
entertainment system to work
44:40
like it wouldn't read my phone it said that it was like
44:42
offline or something weird like that
44:44
what is going on this is stupid
44:46
so I got out got in
44:48
another Kona that was bright green
44:50
or like a bright like yellowish
44:54
because I wanted to be able to see it easily
44:56
but I got in there got everything to work
45:00
I showed up at Camp Subaru
45:02
and they're like what are you doing in this thing
45:06
so for the last one
45:08
I was like hey Joe is it alright
45:12
Subaru through Turro and he was like
45:14
yeah please don't show up in another
45:16
Hyundai at the next event
45:18
like okay I'll do that
45:20
so I'm getting a cross-track
45:22
over the next boat east is nice
45:24
the place where they have it is nice I went
45:26
well you've been nice
45:28
yeah yeah I went in
45:30
oh god when did that go
45:34
I don't know man this is your story
45:38
because stage is now three
45:40
we got her three years ago
45:42
wait sage the car or the dog
45:46
sage the dog she's three now
45:48
and I took her the week after we got her
45:56
no 22 that's what it was in 2022
45:58
is that the only time you've ever been
46:00
yeah yeah that was the only time it was ever been
46:02
yeah it's pretty crazy isn't it
46:04
with all the vendors there
46:06
it's it's crazy yeah
46:08
when I went it was when
46:10
like the ton the new body
46:12
tundra was coming out
46:14
so Toyota have like a big huge
46:16
like it took up like a whole
46:22
for the vendor boots
46:26
yeah it's it's it's such a great
46:28
event for Subaru to be
46:30
participating in because they belong there
46:36
I think it's a little too long
46:40
but it's good that they're there now
46:42
and I'm glad I'm glad that I've
46:44
been able to be a part of it and
46:46
it's it's been a lot of fun
46:52
I'm kind of jealous that everybody's going
46:56
I'm not going to go because it's like
46:58
it's literally the week after
47:02
no it's the week before the weekend
47:04
oh yeah it's the week before yeah
47:06
I know I've got two back to back events
47:10
but that'll be worth it it'll be fun
47:12
because I'll get to see people at
47:14
subefest texas that I haven't seen in a while
47:16
I'll get to see get to see bucky
47:18
which will be cool that's always nice I'll get to see
47:20
I think Rhiannon's supposed to be there
47:24
scott speed may be there
47:28
maybe project midnight I heard
47:32
I'm not going to say who
47:36
they drive one of the big tractors
47:42
and met him at one of the
47:44
events that they had at the local
47:50
project midnight will be
47:54
be at certain subefest
47:56
developments but he wasn't sure which ones
47:58
it was going to go to
48:00
when it wasn't going to
48:02
well it was it was a subefest texas
48:04
last year so it was cool to see
48:06
it in person because that car is
48:08
insane looking and of course
48:12
and first of all the car
48:14
itself and then the driver is
48:16
a really really good driver
48:18
yeah yeah there's a kid
48:20
here in Austin area
48:24
he's either here in Austin or in San
48:26
Antonio like here in the central texas area
48:34
kind of almost mimicking
48:38
but it's not blacked out
48:44
I think he went more with like the cob
48:46
kind of look like the cob on the side
48:48
with like the Subaru sign
48:50
but he's like you know how the project
48:54
sign on the side of it but it's like
48:56
he did that with like the cob
48:58
on it also if you can't see it
49:00
how do you know it's there
49:08
there's some pretty nice builds out there
49:12
yeah there's just not
49:14
like the car like I was saying earlier
49:16
the car scene here is completely different
49:18
like here it's it's all
49:22
Challengers, Chargers
49:26
the high post power stuff
49:28
yeah same here in the Houston area
49:30
every once in a while I will see
49:32
a lifted cross track
49:38
you know but all of these people too
49:42
because I will pull up next to them
49:46
trying to like see if I can get a
49:48
Subi wave or give a Subi wave
49:50
there's been times I'll even like pull
49:52
up in front of somebody
49:54
that has some kind of mods
50:00
just so they can see the back of mine
50:02
so they can see the Subi and you podcast
50:04
so they can see that I've got decals
50:06
and roof rack and tire and like
50:08
I've done some stuff to my Subaru
50:10
and then like pull up next to them
50:12
at a light later on
50:14
or something and I'll look over at them
50:16
and they won't look over I'm like
50:18
do you not see my car
50:20
let's like have some recognition
50:22
of like hey nice car
50:26
and like they don't look over I'm like
50:28
what's wrong with you
50:32
come on I've gotten more Subi waves
50:36
and WRX's than I've had
50:38
from other lifted off-road
50:44
I've gotten Jeep waves
50:50
my I didn't see him
50:54
there was a guy that was driving this older
51:00
that was really nice
51:02
and my son said that
51:04
we were going somewhere
51:06
and he like turned the corner
51:10
and I didn't see it but I'm like oh that's cool
51:14
like respect you know like
51:20
I like it when that happens
51:22
when people can come together with all different builds
51:26
and respect and admire
51:30
you know work that they've put into their car
51:34
cause that's the way it should be with everybody
51:36
and unfortunately it's not
51:42
so there was something
51:46
did I ask you last time
51:48
when you was I doing the waffles and pancakes
51:52
yeah on your episode
51:56
I could remember cause I know you're
51:58
still a pancakes guy
52:00
and that's great I love that
52:04
stay wet stay a pancake guy
52:06
still a pancake guy
52:08
is there anything else you
52:10
want to share about
52:16
your journey or any future plans
52:18
or anything before we get into the last segment
52:20
cause I don't think I was doing the last segment
52:24
when I had your episode
52:30
a couple things have changed since
52:32
the last time I was on the podcast
52:36
I remember you asked me about
52:40
my lift kit and everything like that at the time I was running
52:54
I will say February
52:58
running the rally tech
53:02
three inch lift on the cross track
53:06
any of those lift kits
53:12
but I know it's not technically
53:14
offered anymore on their website
53:18
once in a while I go on just to check the city
53:26
inches of ground clearance
53:28
and no word of a lie
53:34
approached for it here in Texas
53:46
I definitely have to do
53:48
low control arms soon
53:52
front passenger I gotta do it
53:54
but other than that lift
53:58
no problem with it whatsoever
54:04
the whole look of the car look
54:10
I can lay under the car sideways
54:12
it still fit under it
54:18
because it's yeah it's
54:22
that's a lot of space under there
54:32
when I was living back home
54:36
proud to say that I was probably the
54:38
tallest cross track in New England
54:46
it here in Texas I know I definitely
54:48
have it here in Austin
54:50
yeah I yeah I wouldn't doubt
54:54
this is like I know I
54:58
the tallest first gen cross track
55:04
tallest first gen here in Texas
55:06
don't know probably
55:08
um tallest cross track
55:10
don't know probably I have no idea
55:12
but it's not like something like I'm like
55:14
oh I'm gonna be the tallest one
55:16
it's just yeah I'm the tallest one
55:20
just turned out that way
55:24
that was the big the biggest thing
55:28
transmission cooler
55:44
like the cooling I want to
55:52
definitely want to do that
56:04
upgrade the roof rack to an actual platform
56:06
this time next year
56:08
because you just have like a basket
56:10
yeah I just have the basket yeah
56:12
still have the stock roof rails
56:14
the crossbars and stuff yeah
56:18
you think you'll ever end up
56:20
upgrading or switching out your wheels
56:24
I don't know like I have
56:26
looked at wheels but I just don't want to
56:32
as everybody has it's a 15 inch
56:36
everybody and their mom has a 15 inch
56:38
method and then just then don't get methods
56:40
there's plenty of other wheels out there
56:42
alright yeah let me do
56:46
an LP adventure wheels
56:48
there's still everybody has them
56:50
if you don't have methods you have
56:54
rica makes wheels not everybody has those
56:56
and there's some really good looking wheels
56:58
you can get 10% off
57:02
I really like the rica wheels
57:04
but then I'm like but I know
57:16
only in 17s and 18s
57:20
and they make them in the 50100
57:24
for the ascents so that way
57:26
the ascents can run because the ascents
57:28
it's hard to go smaller than
57:34
yeah that's where you can
57:36
run a 17 with them and they're
57:38
really nice I forgot what they called that
57:40
offlander or some outlander
57:42
or something like that that's what they called
57:44
it's like with your cross track you would want
57:46
a bigger wheel and a bigger tire
57:48
yeah I just I just want
57:52
I don't want to be a cookie cutter
57:54
every cross track that's out there I want to be different
57:56
that's that's that's the big thing for me I just
58:00
that's why I went with the crazy lift
58:06
it's good to be different
58:14
I don't think we were doing this last
58:16
segment when I had you on the podcast
58:20
you get to know you a little bit more
58:22
I mean I know we kind of know you but
58:26
as in describe yourself
58:40
dogs I love my cats
58:44
husband and I love my wife
58:48
my rock she has brought me up from
58:54
to the person who I am now
58:56
um without her I wouldn't be who I am
59:04
is she in the same room hearing you say all this stuff
59:06
no no no she's in the living room
59:08
and now watching her youtube shows
59:12
whatever show she's watching
59:14
probably watching Acapulco
59:20
with his name where he's the
59:26
for Hollywood I don't remember
59:46
I don't know what else um
59:48
I don't know this is you
59:54
I know a lot but then I don't know a lot
59:56
like I know I know the random stuff
59:58
yeah like I will bore you to death
00:06
I believe in my ADHD
00:08
I have really bad ADHD
00:10
to where like I'm all over the place
00:14
my brain has been literally an absorbing
00:16
sponge that just absorbs random
00:20
and I could be talking about oh yeah
00:22
do you remember this
00:26
coming up I want to let everybody
00:30
central Texas area to know like
00:38
all that stuff like where
00:40
the meetups are for the day before
00:42
to be fast to go up there
00:48
the Lone Star subbies group
00:52
um I'm one of the admins
01:06
plan that we have is
01:10
Bucky's in new brunt holes
01:14
between 9 and 10 in the morning
01:16
on Friday October 10th
01:18
and then from there
01:20
um they're going to be
01:22
leaving there around like
01:28
to the Bucky's in Temple
01:30
to meet up with everybody else
01:32
in like the Austin area
01:36
and then driving up to
01:46
like in the Waco area
01:52
may get the rest of the way up to Dallas
01:56
the Austin area is listening
02:02
9 a.m. Bucky's in new brunt holes
02:04
we're meeting up there
02:10
like 12 30 12 12 30
02:12
at the Bucky's in Temple
02:16
is meeting there I will be at the Bucky's in Temple
02:18
waiting for everybody that's coming up from San Antonio
02:24
the tallest first gen cross track
02:26
the tallest first gen cross track correct
02:30
do you know how many people are supposed
02:32
to be rolling out together
02:36
from that whole group
02:46
rolling up to Subifest
02:48
and you know all these people just from
02:50
being part of the group
02:54
part of the group since
02:58
November okay just started
03:08
we hit the ground running
03:10
with holding events
03:14
different things had like
03:16
when the flood happened we
03:18
we came together as a whole community
03:22
to collect donations
03:24
for the people who got hit with the flood
03:28
flooding that happened here in central Texas
03:30
in the hill country
03:42
we brought it over out to
03:44
the donation centers that
03:46
like the drop off donation centers
03:48
that were in the Kerrville area
03:50
in the hill country
03:52
we dropped all that stuff off
04:00
at the animal shelter
04:02
here in Austin only because
04:04
a lot of the animals that were in the
04:06
shelters there in the hill country
04:08
were getting transferred to San Antonio
04:12
just to open up spaces
04:14
for the animals that were
04:20
paper towels, water, dog food, cat food
04:24
and I had everything
04:26
in the back of my cross track
04:28
and everybody was waiting for the back
04:30
of the cross track to squat down
04:34
the overload springs
04:36
from rally tech in the rear
04:38
it stayed perfectly
04:40
it stayed perfectly level
04:42
it didn't even move
04:48
working closely with
04:50
local super dealers
04:52
to set up events and everything like that
04:54
so with the community
04:58
we want to get involved
05:00
the community doesn't
05:06
they see it as something good
05:10
when tragedies happen
05:12
they're there to help out
05:18
car meets and we invite the community
05:20
to come out, there's people there that show up with their little kids
05:24
people doing donuts
05:26
or burnouts and stuff like that
05:28
so we don't let that happen
05:30
when we have the car meets
05:32
and stuff like that
05:36
maybe one of these times, depending on when it is
05:50
black racial coffees
05:52
stores in San Antonio
05:56
yeah, so we have them all
05:58
we have them once a month
06:00
we have a car meet there
06:02
they like it because
06:08
we like it because they have really good coffee
06:12
it'd be awesome to have you show up
06:14
like, secretly show up, it'd be awesome
06:16
yeah, I'll have to see if I can make that happen sometime
06:22
what is a favorite memory from your childhood?
06:26
favorite memory from my childhood
06:30
me getting the news of my brother being born
06:36
I remember my parents brought me off
06:38
a couple days before
06:40
my mom was supposed to be
06:42
scheduled for a C-section
06:44
they brought me off at my grandparents' house
06:46
a couple days before
06:48
so I was staying there for
06:54
we get the phone call like, hey
06:56
your brother's born, I'll say, oh my god
06:58
yeah, and then I show up
07:02
my brother's a red-ass
07:06
I was in first grade
07:08
I was probably like 7
07:12
I was like 7 years old
07:16
that's not my brother, he has red hair
07:20
so are you and your brother close?
07:22
yeah, yeah, me and my brother are close
07:24
we're 6-7 years apart
07:30
yeah, when I went to Wicked Big Me
07:34
I spent the night at my brother's house
07:38
my sister-in-law, my nephews
07:42
I tell them all the time
07:44
whenever I talk to them
07:46
I'm like, damn, you guys gotta come down here
07:50
yeah, it's tough when you
07:52
get separated like that
07:54
either from friends or family
07:58
they were an hour and a half away
08:00
from here to San Antonio
08:02
it was just going from Rhode Island to Connecticut
08:08
but yeah, before it was easy
08:10
I'd be like, hey, I call my brother red
08:14
and we're like, hey, Red
08:16
are you doing anything this weekend?
08:18
nope, alright, do you mind if I come up
08:20
Saturday, I'll be there Saturday morning
08:24
hang out and everything, yeah
08:26
so I'd show up, we'd hang out
08:28
by like midnight kind of thing, you know
08:34
now I'm like, yeah, are you doing anything
08:40
what is it that you do for a living?
08:52
so I pretty much work
08:54
I work for an extended
08:56
warranty company that
08:58
you purchase at the dealership
09:00
when you buy your car
09:02
so that's the one where
09:06
manufacturer warranty runs out
09:10
the manufacturer ends up and
09:12
you take your car to the shop
09:14
you need a wheel bearing
09:16
service provider calls us up
09:18
hey, we have this customer so-and-so
09:22
do you have a contract for them? yep, we have a contract
09:26
we get this covered
09:28
what's wrong with it?
09:32
we ask for all that stuff
09:36
examiner, judicator kind of thing
09:38
almost like what it is
09:42
the position, but it's fun
09:44
I work, it's a hybrid
09:46
so I work 3D because
09:48
it's in office two days at home
09:58
remote for the last 3 years
10:04
I love the hybrid thing because
10:06
I like seeing other people's faces
10:10
I literally just saw
10:16
for the last 3 years
10:18
she traveled a lot to work
10:20
she was always gone while I was home
10:28
she still works in the same company
10:30
but now she works for a different department
10:32
and now she's working completely from home
10:38
I mean it's good that y'all can both be home some days
10:42
do you have a dream job?
10:44
and what would that be?
11:02
favorite favorite animal in the world is the Great One Shark
11:08
would literally sell one of my kidneys
11:10
for the opportunity to go
11:12
either cave diving or
11:14
scuba diving with one of them
11:18
that's so bad I want to see
11:22
kind of like a Great White Shark
11:24
yeah, yeah, that would be cool
11:28
what is something that really scares you?
11:34
you're asking really good questions
11:36
hey man, this is the get to know you
11:50
okay, let's go the opposite
11:52
what is something that really excites you?
12:08
or when I come home from work
12:10
they're like hey, dad's awake
12:14
or just coming home
12:20
you know, waking up and still being like
12:22
I still have my wife
12:28
what is something that makes you want to get out of bed every day?
12:32
because if I don't get up
12:34
they will literally
12:36
destroy the apartment
12:38
and get up and feed them and take them out
12:42
they will jump on me
12:44
and they'll literally
12:46
dog pile me constantly until I get up
12:50
what is something that makes you want to stay in bed?
12:54
like if I'm cold cold
12:58
you mean like when your AC is on 69?
13:02
if it's like storming out
13:06
in the morning I'm like
13:08
nah, I'm just gonna sleep
13:10
yeah, I've gotten that answer a lot
13:12
that's a pretty common answer
13:14
that's a good reason to stay in bed
13:16
what would be your best bit of advice
13:18
to give to someone about anything?
13:28
don't second guess yourself
13:30
like if you think like
13:32
like can I do that?
13:34
no, I can't do it if I'm not gonna do it
13:36
no, try it, give it a try
13:38
and if you fail, you know that you failed
13:40
and you figure out what you did
14:00
just because you're blood related to someone
14:02
doesn't mean they have the best intentions for you
14:06
again, go with your gut
14:08
when it comes to things
14:12
yeah, so it's like go with your gut kind of thing
14:14
it's like my best advice
14:18
it's important to do that too
14:22
just try something, if you fail
14:24
then you're always gonna learn something
14:30
you never know what it could end up becoming
14:32
because it could be something
14:34
amazing that you would have never known
14:36
if you didn't just give it a try
14:40
like me, when I bought the cross track
14:44
I knew that I wanted to like lift it
14:48
bigger tires on it and what not
14:50
and everything, but then like
14:54
going out and doing it
14:56
and then I met up with people
14:58
who were back home who were doing it
15:00
and I was like alright, I'm gonna do it
15:04
alright, come on, do it
15:06
different obstacles and I was like no
15:08
I won't be able to do it
15:10
sometimes I would try it and I wouldn't be able to do it
15:12
and I'd go back at it from a different angle to get it
15:14
and I'd conquer that angle
15:16
so the next time I was on that same trail
15:18
I knew exactly what to do to go through it
15:20
and if it was somebody's first time doing it
15:22
I'd be like alright, hey, on this part
15:24
of this obstacle, go left
15:26
now you know, so then you learn
15:28
then you can help somebody else
15:30
exactly, and especially
15:32
in like the off road community
15:34
a lot of people gate keep
15:36
don't be a gate keeper
15:38
don't, like someone ask for advice
15:44
lift do you recommend
15:46
what tires, whatever
15:50
find out yourself or whatever, you know
15:52
don't gate keep stuff like that
16:04
because you never know when you're going to need the help also
16:06
yeah, kindness is always good
16:10
hey man, well thanks for hopping on
16:14
round two for your return
16:18
sorry we didn't get a chance to do this in person
16:20
there's a whole story behind that that we'll keep to ourselves
16:28
still good to see you
16:30
I know you're not too far away
16:32
and it's just it's tough
16:34
to get away sometimes
16:36
even to meet up with people
16:38
yeah, my wife and I were talking about
16:40
going out to Houston
16:42
because I have a cousin out there too that I haven't seen
16:46
so we were talking about like going out
16:48
there to visit and kind of making like a weekend
16:56
but I'm going to see you guys in a couple weeks anyways
16:58
yeah, we'll see you at
17:02
and then the week before
17:04
you're going to meet everybody
17:06
the whole Adventure One crew
17:08
I'm excited about that
17:12
I've been talking to everybody up there
17:14
and everybody's super excited to meet you
17:16
and go down to Overland Expo
17:18
yeah, that'll be fun
17:20
I'm super excited to meet Sam too
17:24
we've connected so long ago
17:28
I had him on really early on
17:30
yeah, super early on
17:34
so he's one of the OG's
17:42
cool man, have a good night
17:44
I'll talk to you later
17:50
thank you so much, Jonathan, for taking the time
17:52
to record with me and share your story
17:54
and your continued Subaru journey
17:56
if you're not doing so
17:58
go give him a follow, it's Sage the Crosstrek
18:00
he's also part of Lone Star Subis
18:04
if you're going to be going to
18:08
he gave some information about where some meetups are going to happen
18:10
where they're going to be rolling out from
18:12
so be sure to check all of that out
18:14
I hope you all have a wonderful week
18:16
be sure to tune in to the Subi Scoop
18:18
next Monday to hear about
18:20
what's going on with Pearl and why I changed out
18:24
and maybe some other things
18:26
but either way, hope you all have a wonderful week
18:30
two weeks for another regular guest episode
18:32
that one's going to be a really good one
