00:00
What's up, everybody? Welcome to the Smoke and Tire podcast.
00:03
Today's episode is, as always, brought to you by Off the Record.
00:06
We love Off the Record.
00:08
You love Off the Record because not a week goes by where I don't get an email from somebody
00:14
talking about how Off the Record saved them a bunch of money, a bunch of headaches because
00:19
they got those points off of their driving record, or I should say they never allowed
00:25
them to get there in the first place.
00:27
If you get pulled over, doing anything, really, what you should do is get Off the Record.
00:33
You should call Off the Record.
00:34
You should actually not call.
00:35
You should go to offtherecord.com slash TST.
00:39
Off the Record will then find an attorney that's very qualified to fight that ticket
00:44
in the jurisdiction where you got it.
00:46
You then have to give some information in order for them to effectively do their
00:49
jobs and then pretty much nothing else.
00:52
They'll handle it all the way to the end, get you the best deal possible.
00:57
And hopefully almost, almost, almost all the time they get those points off your record.
01:03
So if you use our link that's offtherecord.com slash TST, you will get 10% off all legal
01:10
services booked through Off the Record.
01:13
Again, one more time, offtherecord.com slash TST.
01:18
Keep that link handy.
01:20
I promise you will need it.
01:23
On this episode of the podcast, it has been raining in Los Angeles.
01:27
And so we talk about, finally, we got some rain here and it has made the roads very,
01:34
And I learned a whole lot about my Taycan.
01:37
And we try to ponder cars that are actually better when the suspension is set stiffer.
01:43
It's harder to think of than you actually can.
01:47
Because our cars collectible when they have touchscreens, can they come back up?
01:53
And so many good questions from our patrons this week.
01:57
It's the Smoking Tire podcast.
02:03
You can, you can speed it whenever you're ready.
02:07
We had, you know, we had this watch event at the shop and then I used the PA speakers
02:11
to just like play some Bluetooth music from my computer and I ran a microphone XLR just
02:18
directly into the back of one.
02:21
Like have a little thing.
02:22
And so, but when I first, you know, I plugged in the one speaker and then Daisy chained
02:27
the other speaker, right?
02:29
And I plugged the mic in and it was like real quiet.
02:32
And I, and the main knob that seemed to control volume didn't really do anything.
02:37
So I went into the menu and went into the channel one gain, which is where the mic was
02:41
plugged in and like turned it up and like that worked.
02:45
And the mic got, all right, fine.
02:48
I then played music over Bluetooth and, you know, I had, I used the volume controls
02:54
like on my computer to, to make adjustments and like it worked fine.
02:59
And like, and then Christian took the amp, the PA, because he was going to use it
03:06
Well, he calls me the next day, like texts me and, and then calls me and I don't pick
03:12
up because my phone is on like silent or whatever, texts me again, like, please call me, please
03:18
I call him as soon as I get it and he goes, you got to tell me what you did.
03:21
And I was like, what do you mean?
03:23
He's like to the PA, like what did you, what did you change?
03:27
And, and by the way, he was there.
03:30
Like he came to this event.
03:31
He didn't set it up with me, but he was, he was there.
03:34
And so, so he heard like the levels weren't all fucked up.
03:38
Like he made a playlist, like so, so, and, but he's like, you got to tell me what you
03:43
And I go, what do you mean?
03:45
All I did was I changed the gain.
03:47
He goes, the gain, the gain seems fine.
03:50
I go, no, no, there's like the main gain.
03:53
And then you like hold down the button to go into the, the menus.
03:57
And it's where you change like more settings and connect to the Bluetooth
04:02
And I said, there's a gain, another gain setting for channel one and channel two.
04:06
And I turned up the gain on channel one and that made the microphone work.
04:12
And he goes, that's all you did.
04:13
And I go, that's all I did.
04:16
Okay. And he's like, because one of these speakers sounds fine.
04:20
And the other one is like functionally useless.
04:22
And I go, look, you, you, you're an audio engineer.
04:27
And I'm just a moron that was trying to make a microphone sound good.
04:33
I, you know, I don't, I only changed one setting.
04:37
And like, I really assumed that whatever I changed, you would be able to easily
04:42
change back. You can walk up to any stereo and make it sound as best as it
04:47
can sound. That's like your gig.
04:50
And so I was like, I'm sorry for the inconvenience.
04:54
So he goes, all right, all right.
04:55
And like, so the next morning I went like, hey, man, I didn't, you know,
05:01
he went to, he did his show or whatever.
05:02
And I didn't hear anything next morning.
05:05
He goes, I go, hey, man, like, how'd it go?
05:08
He goes, oh, well, your, your PA system is like not usable.
05:12
We have to, we have to get together.
05:14
This is, I mean, it's like brand new.
05:16
We have to get together.
05:17
I thought I can hear him say.
05:19
And he goes, you, and you have to, you have to tell, you have to show
05:22
me like what you did.
05:23
Oh, he couldn't find the menu.
05:25
He said he had to get a backup PA to do his show.
05:28
So imagine his level of panic.
05:31
I mean, even compared to my, you think my level, his like a TEDx,
05:35
you know, if I'm a, if, if, if you're the balance of a Lotus
05:40
Amira, I am more like a, like a GT2 RS, GT2 RS, probably like,
05:48
you know, little tail happy maybe Christian, you know, is
05:53
There's no suspension.
05:54
SSC traction off in terms of the ability to panic over things.
05:59
So he grumbles more too.
06:01
He's got like the rumbly grumble.
06:05
We have a, we have an appointment to fix it.
06:08
Like I, I don't know.
06:10
But like, I bet you whatever he did to try to fix it, he
06:13
made it somehow worse because I don't know that.
06:16
I don't know what he did.
06:17
His blame circles fun.
06:18
No, no, like, because he probably changed a bunch of
06:22
And I don't know what those are.
06:24
You know, I want to know when you see him ask what, how long
06:27
it was between calling you and sourcing another PA.
06:31
Was it like minutes, hours?
06:33
I want to know how long, how much time went by.
06:35
Cause I think that I need to aim this camera.
06:37
That's very, very funny.
06:41
I felt, I felt really, really bad.
06:43
I mean, I don't, you know, but like, I didn't think
06:46
there was any way I could fuck up the settings on like a
06:49
basic PA speaker enough that he couldn't make it sound normal.
06:56
It's, it's probably that he couldn't find the menu.
06:58
Cause I remember, the controls on this, this speaker, by the
07:02
way, are the least, they're not intuitive.
07:05
Like I told, it took me a whole bunch of different
07:08
times of, was it a double tap or hold a hold and like,
07:12
let go on this dumb button and like, like the way like,
07:15
yeah, it's hard to navigate.
07:17
So when we, when we would get attention vector,
07:19
we used to have a couple of different cameras,
07:21
primarily Sony F sevens, FS seven, FS seven.
07:24
But I remember I was shooting something like I was on the
07:28
ground, I had no instruction of how to use this thing
07:30
other than hit record and I needed to chain something
07:32
and I called Armin, our friend, Armin Bog,
07:35
amazing director, DP editor.
07:37
Like he knows all things camera about every camera.
07:41
And his secret is that there are websites you can go to
07:44
that mirror the exact menus and you can like,
07:47
like, it's like paper trading or it's just running
07:51
through the menus on your computer to know where things are.
07:54
And he showed me that I was like, holy crap,
07:56
that's an incredible resource provided by Sony or
07:59
So you need that for the PA so that Christian knows
08:02
which knob to hold, which brings you to this
08:04
hidden menu and then you got to change the game,
08:06
the inner game, not the outer game.
08:08
I guarantee you he didn't even find the
08:13
How did you read the manual?
08:15
Like, how'd you know how to hold this button
08:16
to get to other things?
08:17
There's only three buttons on the back of the thing
08:19
and I had got there like an hour early.
08:21
So I wasn't stressed for time and I assumed
08:24
I wouldn't know what I was doing.
08:26
So I gave myself like plenty of time to like
08:29
fuck around with it.
08:30
So when not pressed by time, I was able to like
08:34
sit there and go, this isn't right.
08:37
Why there must be another menu and like just like,
08:42
you know where this skill comes from,
08:43
you will know, traction control.
08:48
This is a 100% traction control skill.
08:52
We as monkeys have learned that pressing a button
08:54
and holding it can bring you a different result
08:56
than just pressing the button.
08:57
Or like, have you driven a GM lately?
09:00
Like there's a double tap and a triple tap
09:02
and a seven fucking tap.
09:03
FRS, it's a tap tap.
09:07
You gotta know all those things.
09:08
Yeah, yeah, that's how I learned this skill.
09:10
That stuff is challenging too.
09:11
I found it, I mean, it was by luck.
09:13
I'm just trying different combinations
09:15
that turns fucking traction control off in various cars.
09:19
There we go, you know.
09:21
Like I was trying to help my dad do some stuff
09:23
on a computer and you know, he was an ER doctor
09:25
for like 40 years and they had a computer system.
09:28
But if you, if he has to do something
09:30
outside that system, he's like,
09:32
I don't know how to do this stuff.
09:33
And it's cause he didn't go to computer class
09:35
where we, you and I learned the basics
09:36
of just moving files when you're eight years old.
09:40
And now it translate when you're 40,
09:41
you still know how to move these basic functions
09:43
or to turn traction off.
09:45
But if you never did that shit,
09:46
cause all you do is type in prescriptions
09:48
and I don't know, long assessments, then you don't know.
09:51
Speaking of traction control off,
09:53
it's been raining for like four days.
09:55
Folks, support for the podcast coming in hot
09:59
You guys know delete me.
10:00
I've been talking about them for like a year now.
10:02
Delete me makes it quick, easy and safe
10:04
to remove your personal data online at a time
10:07
when surveillance and data breaches
10:09
are common enough to make everyone vulnerable.
10:12
Delete me does all the hard work
10:14
of wiping you and your family's personal information
10:17
from data broker websites.
10:19
Delete me knows your privacy is worth protecting.
10:22
And so when you sign up and provide delete me
10:24
with exactly the information you want deleted,
10:26
their experts take it from there,
10:28
not just once, but in an ongoing way,
10:31
sending you regular personalized privacy reports,
10:34
showing what they found, where they found it
10:36
and what they removed.
10:37
Like I said, not a one time service.
10:39
They're always working for you,
10:40
monitoring and removing the information
10:43
you don't want on the internet.
10:45
The New York Times Wirecutter has named delete me
10:47
their top pick for data removal services.
10:50
I used it and it was so easy
10:53
as someone with an active online presence,
10:55
privacy is important.
10:56
And so when delete me, set me up,
10:58
all I had to do was take a few minutes
11:01
and go through their steps,
11:02
giving them information about where I live,
11:04
my phone numbers and places I used to live,
11:06
the places I used to work,
11:08
family members, et cetera, et cetera.
11:10
And then delete me goes to work.
11:12
You don't hear from them for a couple of days.
11:14
And then they come back with a huge report
11:16
of what they deleted,
11:17
what they need you to do a little more action to delete,
11:20
and then what you need to do a little more action delete.
11:22
Like sometimes you got to do some signatures
11:26
It's nothing difficult,
11:27
but they can't automatically do everything.
11:29
They just like find it
11:30
and then you got to click, click, click
11:32
and then it's gone.
11:33
So it's easy and it's ongoing.
11:35
Take control of your data
11:36
and keep your private life private
11:38
by signing up for delete me.

13:47
Speaking of traction control off,
13:49
it's been raining for like four days
13:51
and I turned some traction control off.
13:54
I had a little bit of fun.
13:56
Yeah, it turns out that Tycon,
13:58
if it's wet, you can initiate a little bit.
14:01
Yeah, if you go full off, you can.
14:02
I forget, is it a four S?
14:06
It's a rear bias four?
14:07
No, I mean, yes it is, it is a rear bias four.
14:11
Like if you have the right set of circumstances,
14:14
like you can initiate a slide in that car
14:18
and get a couple of degrees of fun out of it in the wet.
14:23
You can do this in the dry in like a turbo S.
14:27
And also it's fun, it's like, did you have any wet fun?
14:31
That's a gross thing to say.
14:32
Jim Norton's listening now.
14:34
That's the name of his new special.
14:36
His new special is great if you haven't heard it, by the way.
14:38
No, it always seems like my tires are very sticky,
14:42
so if it's even damp, they're still pretty sticky.
14:45
I need it to be raining,
14:47
but finding a place to do that,
14:49
around here there are a lot of really bumpy F'd up roads.
14:52
And I need to find the good ones occasionally,
14:54
but not this week, no.
14:55
Do you want me to tell you where to do it?
14:57
Yeah, but do it off the show.
14:59
It's really obvious when you think about it.
15:01
So there's like, it's what's great about my location is,
15:05
it's incredibly safe,
15:07
and there's strong visibility in all directions
15:11
for all the reasons you would want.
15:17
Is it near a large, dark building?
15:20
A large, dark building?
15:23
Well, that describes so many places, dude.
15:26
That describes so many places.
15:27
That's true, all right.
15:28
That's not a fun game for the play on the podcast.
15:30
I'll just drop you a pin.
15:31
Just tell me later.
15:32
But yes, I would love to drift around the Waymo's
15:35
that gather in that parking lot, like schools of fish.
15:38
Waymo's on highways now.
15:40
Have you seen them?
15:42
Yeah, Waymo's on the 405 now.
15:44
We've seen them testing with human safety drivers
15:46
for like eight months,
15:48
so I knew this was gonna be coming,
15:50
but yeah, they haven't expanded the map,
15:54
so you're still limited,
15:57
and so it's depending on the hour of the day,
16:01
the ability to go on the highway
16:03
could have limited functionality.
16:05
Like if you're trying to go from here
16:07
across town to like Hollywood,
16:09
like highway don't help anyway.
16:11
But a lot of the distances with Waymo's in that map,
16:14
it can help at the right time of day,
16:17
But just going back to the rain,
16:19
one thing that it made me remember about the Taycan
16:25
is because it's a four,
16:29
it's like the softest one, right?
16:30
And so when you drive around in like comfort mode,
16:33
it basically turns off,
16:35
like it's on air suspension,
16:37
but it turns off like a lot of the damping.
16:39
So it's like really soft and wallowy,
16:41
which for your day-to-day,
16:43
pothold shitty urban hellscape is fine.
16:47
But actually, if you put it in sport mode,
16:52
it turns up the damping and it feels,
16:55
you go, oh, it's actually supposed to feel like this.
16:59
It's probably what normal mode is in a four S.
17:03
They probably built a four S
17:05
and then just took the fucking derping out of it
17:07
to make a four more or less
17:10
because like it actually, it's not much stiffer,
17:13
but it has just way better body control.
17:16
And so over the last couple of weeks,
17:18
I've started just putting the chassis in sport mode
17:24
while even leaving the powertrain in normal,
17:26
just like the opposite of anything
17:28
I would do in any other car.
17:30
That's true, you never do that.
17:31
You're always soft with maximum kill
17:33
of transmission and engine.
17:35
But this car is too soft in soft mode
17:39
and is just right in sport.
17:40
There's also a sport plus,
17:42
but it's just right in sport for kind of every day.
17:45
If the roads are anything above total garbage.
17:49
So there's not a lot of cars where I do that.
17:51
I can't even think of any, really.
17:55
Have you ever, is there any car where you would,
17:57
where the sport mode is better all the time than?
18:01
I know there is, I'm struggling to think of it.
18:03
The M5 Touring actually.
18:04
Yeah, we've been, yes, that's a good example.
18:06
We've been in cars where they're so underdamped
18:09
and normal that the car moves around too much.
18:11
The M5 is a great example.
18:13
So going down the road,
18:14
even though you wanna soak up those bumps,
18:16
the body feels out of control, basically.
18:19
It feels like it's moving and having these secondary motions.
18:22
So that's a good example.
18:25
My box sedan was like that, actually.
18:28
Cause the SUV has the hydraulic,
18:30
so it's a little more settled, even normal mode.
18:32
But the My box sedan, it's just,
18:34
it wants to be so soft that in regular mode,
18:38
it's like too soft.
18:39
And if you put it in sport,
18:40
it's actually like really nice.
18:42
It's just clearly not,
18:43
my box is set up to be driven in,
18:45
so you really don't want one
18:47
if you're just driving yourself around.
18:49
I think the super soft settings work
18:51
if you're going straight on a highway.
18:53
It just absorbs those bumps, right?
18:55
But if you have to turn at all,
18:57
then, and there's a bump in the turn,
18:58
then you kinda get this like weird gyroscope,
19:01
you know, you feel like you're dancing and dizzy.
19:03
Especially if you're talking about air suspensions,
19:05
which when they're soft are really, really soft.
19:09
It's just an empty ball sack there.
19:13
But when you put it in sport,
19:14
like the Taycan steering is really nice.
19:17
It's really very direct and really a nice thing
19:20
to kind of just point with, you know?
19:25
Driving the slant nose was a great example
19:26
of how hydraulic steering is not always better
19:29
than E-pass, because nowadays,
19:31
in my opinion, the E-pass,
19:32
if they get the ratio right, the feedback's good,
19:35
and the assist is the right amount,
19:40
I go, well, this feels more direct,
19:42
and I can feel the tires and stuff,
19:44
and it's a rack speed I'm used to,
19:47
because it's a modern rack speed, and I like it more.
19:51
What, the slant nose?
19:54
Most G-bodies don't have power steering.
19:57
I don't think it works.
19:58
It didn't feel power when I was going slowly.
19:59
Yeah, no, most G-bodies are not
20:01
gonna be power steering cars.
20:02
Oh, so it's not hydraulic,
20:03
because then it's just manuals,
20:04
which also sometimes can feel great.
20:06
That's why they have a real,
20:08
it gives you a much better leverage and feel.
20:10
If the wheel's really small,
20:12
when I put this really small wheel on the safari,
20:14
and then went like, oh no, it was way too heavy.
20:17
I don't think it was that small.
20:20
I had a picture somewhere, but I don't know.
20:22
It's just, some of the E-pass systems are great,
20:24
and then some, like the old six-gen Camaro
20:27
is like, you hit it in sport mode,
20:29
it weighs more, it's harder to turn,
20:31
but you don't feel anything, so that's not good.
20:33
Yeah, yeah, yellow slant nose.
20:36
But yeah, I think, it's drizzling right now a little bit,
20:40
but I think the rain is,
20:42
we, it's like, for the rest,
20:43
anywhere else in the country,
20:44
like rain is such a normal thing here.
20:45
If it rains for four days in a row,
20:47
that's a pretty unique situation.
20:50
Yeah, it's supposed to barely rain tomorrow,
20:52
sunny Wednesday, rain Thursday, but.
20:54
I wonder how fucked up the mountains are.
20:56
Well, and, you know, Marco sent us that,
20:59
like, air-cooled, hot rod monster
21:02
with, you know, street legal tires, technically.
21:05
And he's like, and this is the worst week to have it.
21:08
Yeah, I don't think it's a good time to drive that car.
21:11
He said to not drive in the rain.
21:12
It looks, it's like a 1970 or 71, like 911 T,
21:18
and it's got like RS flares,
21:21
and then it has what appears to be
21:22
some version of a 993 engine in the back.
21:25
It's got a rowdy engine in it,
21:26
and it's supposed to be quite fast,
21:28
but I think weeks ago, I was like,
21:31
I don't think I want to drive this in the rain.
21:32
He goes, yeah, don't, definitely don't do that.
21:34
And then, you know, unfortunately,
21:36
that's what the weather's doing,
21:37
but we'll see, maybe the forecast will change.
21:39
Yeah, it will, because I got, I hope it does.
21:41
I have to go up to Willow Springs or something tomorrow.
21:44
So, oh man, all right.
21:47
But the rain did, it kept my car weekend,
21:51
you know, I didn't really have a Malibu weekend.
21:53
I was supposed to go to this Carson Coffee,
21:56
this like sort of invite-only Carson Coffee
21:58
hosted by Rivian that was supposed to be cool.
22:00
It got canceled because of rain.
22:03
And actually, I was supposed to be at Willow Springs
22:07
I was gonna spend, oh yeah, yeah, rain.
22:10
Cancel for rain, so I was gonna spend all day
22:12
lapping the new streets of Willow today
22:16
You do it tomorrow?
22:18
Well, no, because, well, it doesn't matter,
22:22
but Singer has the track all day tomorrow,
22:26
But I have to go up there for a different thing
22:28
because WCCS is going to be selling a guy's GT4 track car,
22:36
It's our first actual full-on race car
22:38
we've listed on one of the auctions,
22:41
but I have to go up there and get a bunch of information
22:45
and video of it, so that will be fun.
22:48
And it's like 94 miles or so each way
22:54
from my house to Willow Springs.
22:56
And the Taycan, you know, if I go the speed I wanna go,
23:02
the range is like 210, and if I go,
23:06
I have to go otherwise like 74
23:09
to be able to comfortably get there and back
23:12
with a little spare, but that's okay, no worries.
23:17
Well, when we departed Zion,
23:19
our range is like 410, I think, in the car we were in.
23:23
We'll reveal that car later, we just can't yet.
23:26
And we went, ooh, we might be able to make it home
23:28
in one tank and about an hour later it was clear
23:30
that we had exceeded the efficient speed.
23:33
Yeah, yeah, we were not at peak efficiency.
23:36
Speaking of peak efficiency, real quick though,
23:38
you know what I did this morning, I installed,
23:40
and some people are out there gonna be like,
23:43
Did you eat in poop at the same time?
23:45
Yes, I was a complete cycle.
23:48
It was just my own funnel.
23:50
Your own set of feed.
23:51
Um, the, uh, I got,
23:55
I did the roller blade wheel mod on my Pelican case.
24:01
Thad insisted I do it and I did,
24:03
and it was like, you know, $35
24:05
and I installed them in five minutes
24:07
and like, I will do that.
24:08
Dude, so smooth, so quiet, no resistance.
24:11
Does it still stand up?
24:15
I saw a guy that did like an off-road wheel mod,
24:16
but he had to put a block so that it wouldn't tip over.
24:19
Oh, no, this stands up.
24:24
The rolling diameter is the same.
24:26
You might, I mean, ultimately,
24:27
you might have to replace these more often.
24:29
They may wear down.
24:31
Whereas the hard plastic ones I had for 10 years.
24:34
But I got the ABIC five bearings.
24:36
I was just gonna ask it.
24:37
Yeah, of course I did.
24:38
It's the only name I know in bearing.
24:42
You kids today don't know.
24:44
Dude, putting those on a skateboard
24:47
or roll blades back in the day,
24:48
you were so excited.
24:49
You're like, these are gonna be great.
24:50
And then you start rolling,
24:51
you're like, this is too fast.
24:53
At a certain age where it was terrifying.
24:55
It got, well, my friend group, it got out of hand.
24:58
Because did you roller blade ever?
25:01
I skateboarded, then I rollerbladed for a few years
25:03
and for some reason decided to resist
25:05
the more efficient transportation that they provide
25:08
and went back to skateboarding like an ass.
25:10
I rollerbladed, I played a little roller hockey
25:14
I was never very good at ice skating,
25:15
but I was better at rollerblading
25:16
than I was at ice skating.
25:18
And I rollerbladed, do you remember
25:22
when you first met me
25:23
that Tracy and I would rollerblade on the bike path?
25:26
Like, I rollerbladed into like my early 30s
25:29
with, by the way, the same skates.
25:34
I had one pair of rollerblades.
25:35
They were 1990 something rollerblade aero blades,
25:41
if you recall them.
25:42
Yep, I do remember them.
25:43
They were really something.
25:45
They got the quick straps.
25:46
Yeah, the ski boot, quick straps, yeah.
25:50
I never went with that five wheel stuff.
25:52
But we got up to, in high school,
25:53
we got up to the Abic Nines, which was like...
25:58
Only the government gets those.
25:59
When you're 14 and you're 15
26:02
and you're fucking throwing them shits in,
26:03
you can hit like 60 on your rollerblades.
26:07
What was the fucking downhill rollerblading movie?
26:13
I think it was called Air.
26:14
I think it was the only rollerblading movie.
26:17
There might have been one other,
26:18
but that sounds right.
26:19
And Seth Green was in it.
26:20
Yes, that's the one.
26:23
Spelled the same way as the Vitamin C supplement.
26:28
What kind of skates were you rocking?
26:30
You don't remember?
26:32
If I saw a picture, I might go probably those,
26:35
Were they like small wheel freestyle-y skates?
26:37
No, they were more like...
26:38
Just regular skates?
26:40
And a friend of mine was into the freestyle thing.
26:42
He had the smaller wheels in the middle for grinding,
26:44
which he couldn't really do.
26:46
But he could do like,
26:47
I don't know, 360s over stairs and stuff,
26:49
which is much easier on skates than on a skateboard
26:52
because they're stuck to your feet, obviously.
26:54
Didn't Nino do some freestyle skating?
26:56
Yeah, Nino was very into it.
26:59
You know when our rollerbladed last was three years ago?
27:01
After my back repaired it again,
27:03
Sarah rented me rollerblades for like,
27:06
like a birthday weekend and we went on the bike path
27:08
because it was a form of exercise I could do.
27:10
And it was like, this is super fun.
27:12
And we covered so much ground
27:13
and we're just humming along.
27:16
You know what, it was when I had my skiing crash,
27:20
That was the last time I rollerbladed, 2011.
27:23
So I never went back to it.
27:25
It's good hiking muscle workout.
27:28
Your butt will get very sore after that.
27:29
We would do, we would go all the way from Redondo Beach
27:32
to the fucking End of Manhattan Beach
27:34
and back on rollerblades.
27:35
Yeah, you can just cruise.
27:36
Yeah, it was ripping.
27:38
Yeah, after the bike accident,
27:41
we switched to the bike.
27:42
Do you ever have those moments in LA
27:44
where you see something, you go,
27:46
this is such a stereotypical Los Angeles moment
27:48
that if it was in a movie in the 80s, you believe it.
27:52
But if it was in a movie today, you'd go,
27:53
that doesn't happen.
27:55
I mean, oh, well, no, I wouldn't say.
27:57
Until you said that last bit,
27:59
I would say any longboard with a toe dog.
28:02
So like that, I was driving down Highway 1 once
28:05
coming back from Malibu
28:06
and there's that huge parking lot on the right side.
28:09
It's like two football fields.
28:11
And this very attractive woman
28:13
is wearing a very small bikini and just rollerblading.
28:15
And it's like a pink bikini.
28:16
And that was a moment where I was like,
28:18
this would be in Beverly Hills Cop.
28:20
And I would think that the writers just put it in there,
28:22
but it's in the movie because it's in real life.
28:27
I mean, living in Venice for so many years,
28:29
I saw a bunch of those scenes.
28:32
That if you saw them in the 80s would have been natural
28:37
and if you see them today, they seem very contrived.
28:40
But they're totally happening.
28:41
Right, yeah, yeah, yeah.
28:43
Guys, gotta take one more quick break
28:45
because Hello Fresh is coming in hot and fresh.
28:49
And you've heard of them
28:50
because I've been talking about them
28:51
for like over a year now.

They're the number one meal kit in America
28:54
making home cooking easier with chef crafted recipes
28:57

29:01
because this isn't the Hello Fresh you remember.
29:05
It's bigger with a menu double the size,
29:08

29:10

29:15
that'll keep everyone satisfied.
29:17
They've got healthier options.
29:18

29:22
grass-fed ribeyes, lamb chops, oh boy,
29:25

29:29

29:37
with three times the seafood options.
29:39

29:41
like classic beef chili
29:43
or honey glazed pork tenderloin?
29:45
Discover new seasonal produce each week
29:48
from leeks to broccolini to Italian eggplant and more.
29:52
What I love about Hello Fresh
29:54
is that it keeps me making new things.
29:57
Like I love to cook, I love fresh ingredients,
30:00
I love eating healthy,
30:01
but what's hard is always finding new recipes to make.
30:05
You end up like flipping through recipe books,
30:07
flipping through the internet with Hello Fresh
30:09
because you're gonna get those ingredients
30:11
in the exact right proportions.
30:12
You're gonna get those recipe cards.
30:14
There's no extra work to make a new recipe.
30:18
Every recipe with Hello Fresh is a new recipe
30:20
and that's what's different.
30:22
So like even if you're like, I don't want delivery stuff,
30:24
like I wanna go, like the produce is really good,
30:27
the meats are really good, like trust me, they are,
30:30
But like also you're gonna make new things
30:33
that you wouldn't otherwise make
30:35
which if you like cooking is pretty money
30:37
because it takes like the sucky parts out of cooking
30:41
and it makes it all really easy.
30:43
The best way to cook just got better.

the GQ Magazine named it the best rower of 2025.

32:25
Now, truth be told,
32:26
I haven't personally used the Hydro rower.
32:30
They haven't sent me one yet.
32:31
They said they're going to.
32:33
But I have done a lot of rowing work, a lot.
32:37
And it is exhausting.
32:38
It's so hard and it's tough on your body.
32:41
You can obviously start slow and work your way up,
32:44
but if you want to talk about a real intense workout
32:47
that does your upper, your core and your lower
32:50
in one workout, I'll tell you what,
32:53
I've done elliptical, I've done cycling,
32:55
I've done treadmill, I've done a speed bag,
33:00
a rowing machine will get you going
33:02
in the shortest amount of time.
33:04
They are a full workout and they can,
33:07
man, you can make those things super, super tough,
33:09
but I love the idea of the beautiful rowing coaches
33:13
from beautiful locations.
33:16
Head over to hydro.com.
33:18
That's H-Y-D-R-O-W.com

33:36
on the Hydro rower at Hydro.com code TIRE.
33:41
And now back to the show.
33:43
What is the dress code?
33:45
Because Hannah and I are going to Thursday.
33:48
It's a good question.
33:51
I have to wear a suit.
33:52
But I, but it's LA cars.
33:54
Yeah, but it's LA car stuff, so.
33:59
Yeah, that'll be there.
34:00
Flat bill and a car hard jacket.
34:02
Yeah, what is Ron's RS?
34:03
Call it basic car bro outfit, just a hat
34:06
with black t-shirt and vans.
34:09
I think whatever the RSVP said,
34:11
which I don't think it said anything,
34:13
I think you can do what you want.
34:15
I just clicked yes plus wife.
34:17
Yeah, you always have nice stuff to wear, so.
34:21
I mean, I could, well, yeah,
34:22
but I could be silly or I could be serious, which is.
34:25
I think always be silly.
34:28
Sleeping bag jacket then.
34:31
People love that thing.
34:33
That got more attention than our actual show
34:37
But can shout out to Bravo Charlie.
34:39
Do they have a website?
34:40
Can you look up at Bravo Charlie Jackets has a website?
34:44
Because I know you can get this, get it where I got it,
34:47
but I don't know if you can buy them.
34:51
Shop Bravo Charlie.
34:53
Now, you really need to get measured for it.
34:57
And I'm sure you could you could go to a tailor
34:59
and get measured and send your measurements in.
35:03
I got my sleeping bag jacket
35:05
and I wore it to the Willow Springs podcast,
35:09
I think it was only for pros,
35:10
but it's photos on Instagram.
35:12
But these things are the jam.
35:15
And there's so many of them.
35:17
It's like a bomber jacket for people listening.
35:19
It's like a bomber jacket made out of 80s
35:22
and early 90s sleeping bags.
35:24
Kids sleeping bags.
35:26
It's like colorful patterns.
35:29
It's like what I would put in the interior of my car.
35:32
But I get to wear it,
35:33
which is the greatest thing ever.
35:36
That one is the fucking tits.
35:41
$345 made to measure a jacket that looks like that.
35:47
This is like a trippy sort of hypnotic,
35:51
but very colorful kind of hippie pattern,
35:54
almost like Janice Joplin's Porsche.
35:58
It's a lot like that.
35:59
God damn it, I want that.
36:00
I wonder if this is at all.
36:01
Maybe I can buy that before this goes live.
36:04
If this is at all wind or waterproof.
36:06
No, it's a sleeping bag.
36:08
Not a camping sleeping bag,
36:09
like a kid's bedroom sleeping bag.
36:12
Like having a sleepover sleeping bag.
36:13
Yeah, so it's comfortable.
36:16
For truly, it's good.
36:17
They're very soft, but it's more like a,
36:19
it's more like a very cool sweatshirt
36:21
than it is like a weather-resistant jacket.
36:27
It's really, I, you don't wear it instead of a sweatshirt.
36:32
You wear it instead of a jacket,
36:33
because it's warm, but you can't wear it in the rain.
36:38
I mean, you can, but it'll get wet.
36:40
Like a suede jacket.
36:41
No, but it's like literally indoor sleeping bag.
36:45
You'll just absorb whatever.
36:47
Yeah, but I love my jacket.
36:49
All right, so don't wear it on Thursday,
36:51
because it's gonna rain
36:52
and you'll be inside sweating.
36:53
Yeah, yeah, no, it's not,
36:54
it's probably not good for that.
36:55
But for these, for like fall, winter cars and coffees,
37:00
like going up to Good Vibes in the morning,
37:02
that's the jacket for that.
37:05
Because if it's nice enough to be up there
37:06
in the first place.
37:07
You know, when you should have worn it.
37:10
When we hiked Zion, Angels Landing.
37:12
I would have been very warm.
37:14
I would have been, I probably would have been too warm.
37:15
You probably would have been too warm.
37:16
I would have been too warm.
37:17
If I had like just a one layer thicker than I had,
37:22
even if it was like a regular hoodie
37:25
instead of like that T-shirt hoodie,
37:28
that probably would have been all right.
37:29
You had like a moisture wicking workout hoodie on, right?
37:34
Which is good for that in some ways,
37:35
but you know, bad in other ways.
37:36
I had like a version of what I'm wearing now
37:39
as like my outermost layer for like,
37:42
it started at 45 degrees.
37:44
Do you own a like very thin,
37:46
like running windbreaker jacket thing?
37:50
I've been wearing it.
37:51
And I won't buy you one for Christmas.
37:52
No, no, I've been wearing it for the rain.
37:53
It's my like my rainproof like,
37:55
yeah, like it's like an ozio.
37:59
I just didn't fucking bring it.
38:03
Anyway, anyway, it was cold, but it was beautiful.
38:09
I don't have like a lot of other car adventures
38:12
to be honest with you.
38:13
Let's go to the people.
38:14
The patrons have a lot to say.
38:16
Give us some things to talk about in terms of cars.
38:20
We did have a, we hosted a watch event at the shop.
38:23
Shout out to Neighborhood Watch Club.
38:26
It was really good people.
38:27
Everybody was in to,
38:29
and I revealed the new color for the canyons
38:33
and we have a fucking interest list going.
38:36
It's gonna be real cool.
38:41
Of course, the Patreon is where you ask us
38:43
questions for the show, watch the live stream,
38:45
get the show before everybody else,
38:47
get the show without ads,
38:48
and get extra show and more things.
38:52
Patreon.com slash the Smoke and Tire podcast.
38:54
Not to mention, as a patron of any level,
38:58
it does make you like 1000X more valuable financially
39:04
Everyone's equally valuable emotionally to us,
39:07
but financially, a lot of people are like,
39:09
how do we support the show?
39:11
That is like by far the best way.
39:15
Honda Fiddi's nuts is pretty good.
39:19
Says, what are your thoughts on,
39:26
Okay, it's a two-part question.
39:29
New Landfrozer versus Lexus GX versus Defender 110,
39:33
and then part B, lease, finance, straight cash.
39:45
Question number one is sort of like,
39:48
what do you value more?
39:50
In my opinion, the Defender drives the best
39:54
of those options, right?
39:57
The Toyota is the most bang for your buck
40:03
And the Lexus kind of falls halfway in between,
40:06
but it drives a lot more like the Toyota
40:08
than it does like the Defender.
40:11
The Defender drives like a mini Range Rover,
40:14
like a Range Rover Lite.
40:15
Because is the Lexus still body frame?
40:19
The Landfrozer and the Lexus are the same vehicle.
40:21
But the Defender is not, right?
40:23
No, that's unibody.
40:24
Yeah, it's unibody.
40:25
So like, if you're gonna lease,
40:28
I would, this is like a fuck Mary kill.
40:30
Is that actually what we're actually,
40:32
is that actually the question?
40:33
We can play it that way.
40:35
We're playing it that way.
40:36
Let's play it that way, this is a long question.
40:38
So this is the finance lease.
40:41
This is the car version.
40:42
Finance it, lease it, straight cash.
40:46
So I say you finance the Landfrozer.
40:53
Cause you can keep it,
40:54
because that's someone who wants to keep it
40:57
Keep that shit for a long time,
40:59
pass your finance and then beyond, right?
41:03
Lease the Defender,
41:07
make it someone else's problem.
41:08
Oh yeah, that's the one you fuck.
41:11
And straight cash on the Lexus GX,
41:13
cause they have really good resale value.
41:16
For a second, I was like,
41:17
why would you not just buy the Landfrozer,
41:18
but the Lexus would have,
41:19
they both have great residual value.
41:21
They're both super popular names.
41:24
But yeah, I guess buying the higher market one,
41:27
maybe it'll hold your money a little bit better.
41:30
There's a lot more words to that question,
41:33
but it would take us a long time to get through them.
41:35
So we made it into a game.
41:36
If you want the, I mean,
41:37
go listen to the show we did with John McGuire
41:39
on financing versus leasing versus cash purchase.
41:42
Like that has all the detail you need.
41:44
Depends more about you than it does about the car.
41:48
Like what is your threshold for,
41:51
and also it's like, are you the kind of person,
41:53
if you know you're gonna want a new car
41:55
in three years, like lease,
41:57
because that's a bad way to like,
42:00
to buy a car and then sell it in three years,
42:03
that's like, that's bad idea.
42:05
But if you're gonna buy a car to hold on to it
42:07
for like a while, and we're talking about new cars,
42:09
buy a new car, hold on to it for like,
42:11
as long as you can bear kind of, you know what I mean?
42:14
But if you're a new every three or new every two
42:17
kind of person, you just know that,
42:19
get on the lease train.
42:21
Hold up, let me light this J up.
42:25
I don't, that's great.
42:27
It's a great way to live and a great username.
42:30
What's the rarest car that you've had a go in
42:33
that you hold over your journalists heads?
42:39
For a minute, let's see.
42:42
Well, the Zinger briefly.
42:43
The Zinger made everyone jealous for a minute,
42:46
and now everyone else gets to drive that.
42:47
Yeah, that was pretty cool.
42:50
But then you know, there's still no press launch
42:53
I was one of only like two people
42:55
to drive the Venom GT.
42:57
Yes. Which was a big deal for a minute.
43:00
Zinger Turbo, you know, for me.
43:03
I know they get people access, but it's hard to get it.
43:07
The Gunther Turbo Mule.
43:09
Only Johnny and I drove that.
43:11
And people were like, dude, dude, dude, dude,
43:16
You know, we're getting, you know, we're getting.
43:19
We're getting two things.
43:20
We're getting two things.
43:22
We're getting in a couple of weeks,
43:23
we're getting member Gunther,
43:26
they're trying to like experiment outside of Porsche
43:30
a little bit so that you drove that BMW that they did.
43:34
They've done a 458.
43:36
And so we're getting that.
43:38
It's apparently quite nasty, but it looks really good.
43:41
I've seen photos of it.
43:42
It looks really nice.
43:42
So I said, yes, we'll have a go with that.
43:45
See what's up with that?
43:46
We should for science.
43:48
So we should really try what they could do with it.
43:52
And then we are gonna get the slant nose.
43:56
I think in January, they said the slant nose is ready.
43:58
And he said, it's, he said, if you put E85 in it,
44:03
it's over a thousand horsepower.
44:05
And I said, if you put E85 in that car,
44:08
I will fucking kill you.
44:09
Yeah, please don't do that.
44:11
I do not want that.
44:11
Please don't do that.
44:13
If he's gonna do that, he needs to rent a runway
44:16
Yeah, I don't want any part of the street.
44:22
But let's see, was anything else?
44:24
I mean, what's so funny is like,
44:28
journalists get to drive everything.
44:30
So historical significance is what makes us
44:34
like kind of like drool.
44:36
So, you know, when like, Chris Harris gets to go
44:40
in a car that like won Le Mans, like he just sent me
44:43
a video of him like ripping a Skari
44:45
in a McLaren F1 long tail.
44:47
And I was like driving the 918 at the time.
44:49
And I was like, you had to fucking one up me,
44:51
you little shit head, didn't you?
44:53
You know, but like, what's his name?
44:57
Parnelli Jones is Mustang.
44:59
I got to drive the journalists.
45:01
You know, they drool over shit like that.
45:04
Is there anything else?
45:06
It's a good question though.
45:07
Those are pretty rare.
45:08
The Russell built car.
45:11
Like that's a, that was a one of one.
45:12
Oh, I drove the, I drove the Cunningham C5R.
45:15
They only made one of those.
45:17
That's, that's though.
45:17
That's the only one of them that ever existed.
45:18
Roof rodeo recently, but that's the odd,
45:21
like you said in the video,
45:22
the odds of us even seeing one of those again,
45:24
just seeing it is like astronomical.
45:28
So normally the only place you would see one of those
45:30
is like the quail or like, you know,
45:32
some other prestigious type of that.
45:34
You're not just going to see them around.
45:38
Eastside junk cars and salvage.
45:40
I hope this person uses this.
45:42
That makes it a write-off.
45:44
If you name, if you use your name as your business,
45:47
you're marketing, you're advertising
45:49
on the smoking tire podcast, it's marketing.
45:52
I don't even care if that's real, but I really like it.
45:55
I purchased a, a running driving functional 1997 GMC Sierra
46:02
for the rather felonious sum of just 18 Hyundai.
46:06
It compliments my GR 86 as a utility vehicle,
46:10
but reminds me of the value of simplicity,
46:12
how to be more present and how good my 86 is.
46:14
I had gotten a bit bored,
46:16
but thanks to the old truck, I'm in love again.
46:18
Is that just, is there more to that one, Zach?
46:20
Or is that the entire thing?
46:22
Do you ever get that refreshing feeling
46:25
within your own fleets or after a mediocre press loan?
46:30
Go, the, the, the going back to simple cars thing,
46:36
like I do kind of get, especially like slow ones,
46:39
like our Delica, our little, our Japanese van.
46:43
When you drive that thing, like it's got 85 horsepower.
46:46
Like you can only go so fast.
46:48
It's like not possible to be in a rush in that car.
46:53
Whereas if you're used to driving an electric car
46:56
or something all day, especially a big horsepower one,
46:58
you can drive like a total asshole
47:00
and not even really think about it.
47:02
So it's funny how getting in a really slow car,
47:07
you end up like getting to those places
47:10
in basically the same amount of time
47:12
and you're forced to sort of be like,
47:14
this is the speed I go.
47:16
Same thing with driving cross country in an EV.
47:18
Set the cruise at 74, demand, this is the speed I go.
47:22
It was a total actual mental reset
47:27
from the concept of constantly trying to make time,
47:31
which is what I normally do, which is what we did,
47:34
which is what we did the entire way
47:35
going to Utah and back a couple of days ago.
47:39
LL Cartier, but welcome to the Patreon,
47:42
east side tow and whatever,
47:44
wrecker, whatever your business name was.
47:47
LL Cartier says, I think the new Mybox
47:49
might have an insane aging arc.
47:52
I think they will be vomit worthy in 15 years,
47:56
but gold in 30 years.
47:58
Imagine a Mybox or Alpina from 1995.
48:02
The more stickers and promotions around it,
48:05
Possibly, I think the touch screens
48:07
could potentially really age these cars fast.
48:11
Yeah, and the plastic and stuff surrounding them
48:15
will age quickly and just the size of screens
48:18
kind of dates things.
48:19
The good trick the Bentley has done
48:21
with the rotating thing is eventually
48:23
if that screen looks old, you just spin it around
48:25
and you got those three gauges
48:27
and that'll kind of help.
48:29
The 918, the only thing that dates it
48:33
is those shitty haptic buttons.
48:35
And that thing is like 10 years old
48:38
and it's pretty rough to use those.
48:40
And so I'm not sure how the Mercedes stuff specifically
48:48
that's so touch screen involved,
48:50
like how that stuff comes back after,
48:53
you know, how it comes back up.
48:55
Like I can't, I don't want to be naive, but like.
48:59
I think, I mean, look, aftermarket with my car.
49:02
You've got this car play thing.
49:04
So now I have all the functionality.
49:05
I mean, the screen is lower res for sure,
49:08
but it gives me all the modern functions I really want.
49:11
So I think if you can do that.
49:12
No, no, but I'm saying if you buy a Maybach today.
49:15
They're talking about,
49:16
are you talking about it today?
49:17
Like a 2025 Maybach.
49:21
Like unless you have,
49:22
you're gonna need whole system replacement at that point.
49:24
Like how does that car ever become like a classic?
49:32
I just don't, I don't know.
49:33
I think, I think you make a great point.
49:35
The repairability, we've talked about this before
49:37
can be a huge headwind for something that's collectible.
49:40
If no one can work on it, vector or something.
49:43
Like if you need to know a machinist to make this engine work
49:46
or you need a computer programmer,
49:49
there's a guy that started a business.
49:49
He was an Indy 500, like, you know, Indy mechanic.
49:53
Now his business is building wiring systems
49:56
just to get vintage race cars going.
49:58
You need that guy who knows how to design
50:00
a wiring harness just for your car.
50:02
So you're gonna need that for the Maybach.
50:03
And that market will be so tiny.
50:06
There's like two people on the planet
50:07
they're gonna be interested in doing it.
50:08
Did I say in the last show,
50:10
because I had just come back from our collector friend's house,
50:12
he said, his personal mechanic,
50:15
he's got 70 plus cars.
50:16
And he said his personal mechanic is 74 years old.
50:18
And he said, if this guy retires or dies,
50:20
I'm selling all my cars the next day.
50:23
He said, I can't, I cannot go on without this person.
50:28
You know, but there, like when we did the Audrey thing
50:31
there was that young guy who was able to fix
50:33
a ton of stuff, Jesse or something.
50:35
Like they're out there, but they're hard to find.
50:38
Forgot that guy's name.
50:39
Someone who speaks carb and computer.
50:42
Well, and what, and Magneto.
50:45
Lockshock Darrell said,
50:47
I got the Sky Dweller as a loner and hated it.
50:51
What other watches did you get as loners?
50:53
Try on at the AD or purchase
50:55
that didn't hold up to what you expected?
50:57
Oh, this seems like, I almost,
50:58
this is like a planted question
51:00
because I'm about to sell a bunch of watches.
51:02
Is it, is it like two gauche?
51:05
None of them are that expensive.
51:07
Like the most expensive one I want to sell.
51:09
I don't want to sound like an asshole,
51:11
but the most expensive one I want to sell is like five grand.
51:13
Everything is under that.
51:14
The cheapest one would be a couple hundred bucks.
51:16
There's probably 10 watches I want to sell.
51:18
Is it, do she just try to post on Instagram
51:21
the watches and the prices?
51:22
If the prices are 10% below market value
51:26
across the board, is that do she?
51:31
You're not pricing them with the Matt Farah bump.
51:33
You're like, this is fair market value,
51:36
If anybody likes them.
51:37
I'm cleaning out the closet.
51:39
I think I might do that.
51:40
It seems like the easiest way.
51:42
People, people that we work with sell stuff
51:44
on Instagram all the time.
51:45
I just seem, it seems a little douchey,
51:47
but okay, so doing the watch podcast
51:51
and being sponsored by watched people
51:53
and getting to try stuff on.
51:56
Oh my God, how spoiled I got.
51:57
That's, that shit was really spoiled
52:00
because even like press cars, same kind of deal.
52:04
You know, so many cars that imagine,
52:07
imagine how many cars you and I would have been like,
52:10
if we never got to try them, they would have been like,
52:13
I want to buy one of those, but after a week,
52:15
either you go, oh, hell no, or you go,
52:18
you know, actually, I've tried that and you know,
52:22
I could tell you what it's about
52:23
and went on an adventure and like,
52:25
and like, normally you would have to have
52:28
those type of experience.
52:28
Now it's not in order to do that
52:31
and so it's a perk of the job
52:33
that we don't spend money on things
52:36
we already know aren't gonna work out.
52:39
That's just like a little, a slight side benefit of the job.
52:42
And I think that's why so many people
52:43
look to us for car advice
52:44
because they don't want to spend money
52:46
on something they don't like either.
52:49
With the watches, what I've learned
52:53
from like 10 years of collecting watches is,
52:55
it's all about the fit.
52:57
It's about how it fits on your wrist.
52:59
And I've bought watches that are supposedly 40 millimeters
53:04
or 45 or 46 and they all fit.
53:06
They all fit like kind of different
53:07
and you can't go off an Instagram photo.
53:12
You really have to try it on.
53:14
And so the Sky Dweller, I thought was a really cool watch
53:21
until I wore one for like a month
53:23
and I was like, actually it's like a little too big
53:25
and the complication doesn't really do anything for me.
53:27
It's kind of hard to read.
53:28
And so glad I didn't buy that.
53:30
You know, that's an expensive fucking watch.
53:33
Good thing I didn't learn that by buying it.
53:37
Look great on Instagram.
53:39
Look great on everybody else.
53:40
I hate how they sit on my wrist.
53:49
On our related questions,
53:50
Chappy asked, do you have a max number of nice watches
53:54
before you start selling
53:55
or do you just sell them on your board
53:57
or you don't wear them?
53:58
Don't, it's the same as cars.
53:59
If you don't use it, it's gotta go.
54:01
So any, the watches I'm selling,
54:04
I probably haven't worn for like five or six months.
54:07
So that's, if you don't wear it for like five
54:09
or six months, you know,
54:11
those like a house cleaning specialists
54:13
that help you declutter your shit.
54:15
Yeah, does it spark joy?
54:16
Yeah, or have you touched this in like two years?
54:20
Have you worn the sweater in two years?
54:22
Have you worn these shoes?
54:23
If you haven't two years, shit's gotta go.
54:26
It's not for everybody.
54:28
And I don't live my house that way.
54:30
Obviously you've been to my fucking house,
54:31
but how many watches can you wear?
54:36
And so if I want a new watch,
54:38
if I'm looking at something,
54:39
we gotta clean out the closet.
54:42
Limited amount of space, you know?
54:44
We're not getting a bigger safe.
54:46
Yeah, so we'll just keep expanding.
54:47
They're safe or whatever.
54:50
I've been talking to these collectors
54:53
All these folks, once money doesn't matter anymore,
54:59
if you're fortunate enough to get to that,
55:01
big money where it's like, pfft, whatever,
55:05
kind of what kind of living.
55:07
If you're fortunate to get there, time.
55:10
Cause I've been talking about like,
55:11
talking to people with 918s for this story I'm doing.
55:15
And like, everyone I know,
55:17
which is admittedly just a small sample size,
55:19
but like, I know four or five people who own 918s,
55:22
which is more than most people do.
55:24
So like, every single one of those folks
55:27
talks about like, a very busy family life,
55:31
a very busy work life, travel, you know,
55:34
either for work or to multiple different homes seasonally.
55:39
And then they own many cars.
55:41
And so the answer to like,
55:44
why wouldn't you daily this is like, oh no, I would,
55:48
but like, I'm doing shit.
55:50
So like, I can't really argue with that so much, you know,
55:54
it's more of a, I don't have time to daily it
55:56
than I actually, than it has anything to do with
56:00
I won't put miles on the car.
56:02
I didn't talk to anybody with an investment grade 918
56:06
that they were afraid to put miles on.
56:08
So maybe my theory didn't hold up, you know.
56:11
It's just time though.
56:13
Yeah, maybe people, I mean,
56:14
zero mile and like sub 500 mile ones do come up.
56:18
So this is true for some people,
56:19
but maybe not my group of friends.
56:21
The nice thing about the car hobby
56:23
is assuming you have a commute or something
56:25
or like you can drop your kids off and pick them up.
56:28
You can do that in your car.
56:29
Whereas, you know, if you have a dirt bike,
56:32
a mountain bike, rock climbing gear, hockey gear,
56:34
like all of those hobbies you drive to
56:36
and then you do them.
56:38
So you can't really integrate them
56:39
into your daily life as much.
56:44
But yeah, getting to try stuff without having to buy it.
56:47
That's a privilege.
56:48
I'm sorry I don't have a bigger list of things I didn't like.
56:57
A lot of like tutors, they just don't do it.
57:01
They don't do it for me.
57:03
And vintage stuff, which I love looking at on Instagram
57:09
Johnny Evie Gierberman, have you ever driven
57:12
a G8 GXP with a manual?
57:14
How similar is the recipe to the E39 M5
57:18
even with the bad interior?
57:19
I mean, similar, like pretty similar actually.
57:24
In fact, if you get to the Chevy SS 2015 with MagRide,
57:29
I would argue that that is the same formula
57:33
That's a great car.
57:34
Chevy SS MagRide is a better E39 M5.
57:37
If you find one that's not had the shit kicked out of it.
57:40
Those fucking things are bad ass.
57:46
Great fender flares, everything.
57:48
They just, the steering is great.
57:50
MagRide, the clutch is really nice.
57:53
The shifter's really nice.
57:56
I mean, it's everything you want.
57:58
And it's 12 years newer than an E39.
58:00
Well, what that really means in practice
58:02
is a much better steering ratio.
58:05
It's got a much sharper steering rate.
58:06
Oh, because it's newer.
58:08
I thought you meant because it's a Chevy.
58:09
Yeah, the E39 M5 is great,
58:11
but it's almost like we were talking about last show,
58:13
like Boxster to NSX.
58:15
It's kind of like that evolution
58:17
where you've got that, you know, in 2015,
58:20
GM was making some pointy ass cars.
58:23
Just the Camaro was awesome then.
58:25
Yeah, the C7 was pointy.
58:27
Yeah, I mean, those are quick cars.
58:31
Waymo handjobs from women, I hardly know.
58:39
Is a well-maintained Lexus GX or 4Runner
58:43
with 200K miles worth 13 to 17,000 bucks.
58:48
I expected to get one for around 10.
58:51
Curious on your thoughts?
58:54
Yes, I do think it's probably worth that.
58:56
I mean, I think those are really well-made
58:59
and simple vehicles.
59:03
You know what I mean?
59:10
His older one's an LX570.
59:11
Oh, it's a slightly bigger one.
59:12
Those are Link Land Cruisers.
59:14
Even the GX are, yeah, I think so.
59:18
13 to 7, yeah, because people still use them
59:21
as overlanding vehicles and stuff like that.
59:24
And the thing about it is like,
59:27
look, I'm not trying to be disrespectful.
59:30
The difference from 10 grand to 13, luckily, is close.
59:32
But I think you could put miles on that car
59:34
assuming it's been well-maintained.
59:36
And if you buy it with 200,000 miles
59:40
and you want to sell it with 220 or 230 later,
59:42
the market won't care.
59:43
They'll buy it from you because those are reliable
59:46
off-road vehicles and everyone loves them.
59:49
And I mean, I think people,
59:52
forerunner and Lexus off-road people,
59:56
you're talking about like the kings of resale value.
00:02
I think this person, the market you're seeing
00:06
You can go on there and go,
00:07
that's more than I was hoping to spend.
00:09
That's a fair thing.
00:10
But I think the bidding market has softened a little bit,
00:14
but it's a good representation
00:15
of what people were paying.
00:16
Maybe you find a slightly better deal
00:18
on Facebook marketplace
00:20
because it's not going to have all the hype
00:22
and as many eyeballs.
00:23
Maybe you'll be able to find a pretty decent like GMT-800.
00:28
Like a Tahoe from like,
00:34
what's the first year?
00:35
Maybe it was 2000 or 2001.
00:38
When they just started around it.
00:43
I think for 17 grand,
00:44
you could probably find one of those
00:46
with 125,000 miles on it.
00:49
And it could still be in decent shape, I guess.
00:52
So, I mean, I wouldn't shy away from those GMT-800.
00:58
I think that's the 800.
01:01
The roundy Tahos, those are really, those are nice.
01:05
Law and order ripped from the bread lines.
01:07
We're heading there.
01:08
What is the best experience per dollar
01:10
in a front engine rear drive V12 manual?
01:15
Does the 550 Maranello reign supreme
01:18
or what about the eight series or Aston DB7
01:21
or manual swapped vanquish?
01:23
I mean, if really, if we're talking value,
01:25
a manual DB7 is cheap
01:32
and it's actually quite pretty.
01:35
Yeah, I think a DB7 like GTA is a very pretty car.
01:41
The convertible's not so much
01:43
because the way the top sits on the back
01:45
but the coupes I think are actually very pretty.
01:50
Clean, really clean design
01:52
and they've got a V12 and you can, you know, pretty,
01:56
I think pretty handsome interior.
01:58
This is 20, 31,000 mile 03.
02:05
That's a V12 manual Aston Martin.
02:08
You know what I mean?
02:09
I bet that's cheaper these days.
02:11
Yeah, is there anything you can see?
02:13
Look up, go up to the top to click on that link
02:16
and let's see if there's a recent.
02:19
What are DB7s going for now?
02:22
So here's a, fuck, these are great deals.
02:27
32,000 mile, 2,000 DB12 Vantage Coupe six speed,
02:30
44,000 bucks last week.
02:33
Last week, the Volante's aren't worth shit.
02:35
They're all starting with a two.
02:38
Wow. Bro, that is classy.
02:42
Dark blue, Volante.
02:43
I mean, assuming you have, I mean, any cheap V12,
02:46
you know, you need to have an appetite for service.
02:50
But that is a very pretty car.
02:54
It has a stick, you know, I like it.
02:57
I mean, here's a coupe for 32, probably higher miles
03:00
because next to it, there's one with 6,000 miles,
03:02
kilometers, and that was 70 grand.
03:05
I feel like, I feel like, how do you fucking lose?
03:08
That's pretty awesome.
03:09
How do you buy a 20,000 mile V12 Aston Martin
03:14
I mean, you know, you gotta get insured,
03:16
you gotta keep it running, but that's money in, money out.
03:19
That's pretty cool.
03:19
A V12 Aston Martin is absolutely bottomed out
03:24
And, because to get a decent 550 with a manual
03:27
is to get a start with 80.
03:29
A shitty 550 is 90, like a really shitty one.
03:34
I mean, the one I drove, the center console popped out
03:37
under acceleration and needed a little repair there,
03:39
and that was priced at 70, and that was also six years ago.
03:42
And look, there's a lot to love about 550s,
03:45
but they only drive.
03:48
Okay, only marginally better than the Aston.
03:50
I think the Aston's giving you,
03:51
I mean, that whole experience is shifting,
03:53
sound, and looks when you get out of it,
03:55
and they both have that.
03:57
And I mean, and look, I have a vanquish,
03:59
but a vanquish is probably, they ask for best value,
04:02
and a vanquish will give a better driving experience
04:05
than a DB7, but probably 2.5x the price.
04:11
One, because they didn't really come manual,
04:14
so you've gotta get, either get a factory manual,
04:17
which they don't, they never published
04:19
how many they made.
04:21
They made 100 final edition Ss, right?
04:25
In 06, which were available in manual,
04:29
but they never said how many were actually made in manual,
04:32
and it wasn't all of them.
04:33
So nobody knows, or at least no one outside
04:36
of Aston Martin, they're not telling.
04:40
The DB7 actually came with a manual,
04:42
so you don't have to do that, you just buy it and go.
04:45
Lane Meyers Manx, if you were to do a singer-esque
04:51
company, but with Ferraris,
04:54
what model would you choose and why?
04:59
I mean, so the only time you can do it, huh?
05:05
Well, it's tough because with Singer,
05:06
I think a lot of their success was from the aesthetics.
05:09
They changed it very slightly, and all my favorite Ferraris
05:16
I don't know what I would change.
05:17
I don't have the pen in my brain to be like,
05:19
here's what I would do to redesign the 550 Maranello.
05:22
Like I'm not touching that.
05:23
So you can do a little drivetrain and suspension.
05:26
You just have to pick a model.
05:27
You don't have to say what you would change.
05:31
I mean, the 355, if it was possible
05:33
to just make it bulletproof, and maybe like,
05:37
I don't know what I'd fuck with though.
05:40
That's what's tough.
05:41
What you really wanna do is just put basically
05:44
a 360-challenged Schradale engine in the back of a 355.
05:47
Like that's pretty much it.
05:49
That's a good idea.
05:50
You really don't have to do, it would sound great.
05:53
Like it would work better.
05:55
Like that's pretty much it.
05:57
355, but with timing chain conversion.
06:00
Timing chain conversion and make, you know,
06:02
not magnesium valves anymore.
06:04
I do like the woven leather seats in Singer's.
06:06
I know that a friend of ours thinks they suck
06:08
in those cars, but.
06:10
The woven leather is cool.
06:11
I think it's very cool.
06:11
The woven leather is fucking cool.
06:12
And you could get rid of the gummy buttons.
06:15
You could redo the interior a little bit,
06:20
Yeah, the problem with the 355 is that it's perfect.
06:23
And so you, in terms of how it looks
06:25
and in terms of how it drives, it's no notes.
06:28
And so like, well, what are you gonna do to that?
06:31
And so, and what, again, we say this all the time,
06:34
but what Singer and others, but mainly Singer, started is,
06:39
is taking advantage of the fact
06:41
that the 911 was the same underneath for many years.
06:44
And so they could do a greatest hits catalog
06:48
of 911 bits, and they smartly chose
06:52
which bits came from where,
06:55
to create this highlight reel of air-cooled love.
06:59
There's only certain Ferraris you could do that with.
07:02
You could either do like a 328, 308, 328, 288 GTO
07:08
and create, that went all the way to the F40, right?
07:12
From the 308 to the F40 is like one line.
07:15
So you could use that one,
07:17
or you could do the 348, 355, sort of one.
07:23
Just depends on how good the cert,
07:24
like 360 body on a 458 chassis would be rad,
07:29
but I know it wouldn't work.
07:30
Because you need the air intake for the 458,
07:33
you need to keep everything cool and working,
07:35
so that'd be tough.
07:39
I mean, that one dude put like a,
07:42
what is essentially a destruct, I think,
07:44
a 360 engine in a Dino, which is pretty,
07:49
Pretty bitchin', that's pretty cool.
07:51
So like, Dino's actually could be, it would be a good one.
07:54
I mean, just if you, because you could update a Dino,
07:57
if you, I mean, if someone really wanted
07:58
to burn the money, they're very beautiful,
08:00
but you could make some subtle tweaks to a Dino
08:02
and make it a V8, even if it was like a 328 engine
08:06
with carbs or something, so it sounded good,
08:09
but made like 280 horsepower instead of like 180.
08:13
That would be a good improvement.
08:15
They're gorgeous cars too.
08:18
Frozenberry Metallic Floyd says debating whether to finance
08:23
the Vegas trip or not, thoughts.
08:26
The road and track experience.
08:28
I've always wanted to go on one.
08:30
I mean, dude, that doesn't sound wise.
08:37
I know there's people that finance experience is out there.
08:41
That does not seem like a wise thing to be doing.
08:47
I don't think the trips are going anywhere.
08:55
Because if you save and some emergency happens,
08:58
you have the money, you know?
09:00
And then reward yourself for saving well
09:03
by going on the trip, you know?
09:05
Otherwise it will be a form of a place of stress,
09:09
in my opinion, you know,
09:10
the whole time I'd be going like,
09:11
is this fun enough to justify stretching my budget?
09:14
And then later, every time the bill comes,
09:17
you're like, okay, I gotta pay this off.
09:19
I think it could actually be more stressful.
09:21
Dude, it's one thing to finance something
09:23
that is like a car, and you use the car every day.
09:27
You need the car, you finance the car,
09:28
and yeah, I'm paying every month,
09:30
but I'm also driving every day.
09:32
Dude, to go on a vacation and be making payments
09:35
like six months later, oh, bro.
09:39
Even the best vacation after six months.
09:42
The memories faded, sure.
09:42
After six months, that vacation's gone.
09:44
Like, I'm so glad that these trips are so appealing to you
09:48
that that is an idea that comes in your head,
09:51
but save, don't finance, please.
09:56
You'll be happier going home from the vacation,
10:02
Matt and the giant Porsche, I like it.
10:05
How do you feel about the prospect
10:07
of the rumored five-cylinder Golf R?
10:14
I think it is a way to keep the Golf R interesting
10:18
for another generation, especially if maybe they had plans
10:24
to possibly kill gasoline-powered Golfs
10:28
and only do an electric run, and this was the only way.
10:32
But it also may not happen.
10:39
I think it would make sense.
10:40
They've already got a good engine.
10:41
It makes sense that they would put it in there.
10:44
It'd be interesting to see how they price it
10:45
because it would compete with the RS3,
10:49
but you can't get the RS3 in a five-door, right?
10:52
Right, so it's kind of like, all right,
10:53
here's your wagon, but it's different,
10:55
and they'll find a way to separate them, of course.
10:57
The Audi will always be more expensive.
10:58
Yeah, but it's a $25,000 problem.
10:59
You're right, exactly.
11:01
And some extra tech or something.
11:03
It would sound rad.
11:04
I liked the Golf R a lot, the current Golf R,
11:07
I need to get a Volkswagen and get a loan
11:09
because I really enjoyed it in performance car of the year.
11:13
Don't know whether on the Boxer or the Jag.
11:21
It seems like Mazda and Toyota are getting together
11:24
for the next gen of Miata N86.
11:28
I can't feel like on paper the ethos are the same,
11:30
but in reality they're quite different.
11:34
I actually, you know what?
11:36
I'm gonna just, I'm gonna table this one
11:38
because I haven't read anything about this.
11:40
Have you read about this?
11:42
I haven't known, I don't know anything about it,
11:43
and if we have something to comment, I'll comment,
11:46
but I would just be guessing,
11:47
and it was a very specific question.
11:49
I don't have the answer to.
11:53
Performance stats commonly refer,
11:55
Street Parked says performance stats
11:58
so commonly refer to peak horsepower and torque,
12:00
how can automakers and journalists better convey
12:03
horsepower and torque as area under the curve,
12:06
especially with blended ice and electric power
12:08
that result in higher power?
12:11
I mean, I like to think that when I do a car review,
12:14
I can't speak for anybody else,
12:15
I talk about the power band, the width of the power band,
12:19
every single video, it's what is the peak torque,
12:21
what is the tip in, what is the peak torque,
12:23
what is the peak power, how wide is the power band?
12:26
Usually expressed in terms of RPM.
12:29
So that's the best I can do, is is this car
12:31
have a wide power band or a narrow power band,
12:34
and if it's wide, then your area under the curve is good.
12:39
I think it's also wise, a lot of magazines
12:41
will do like the five to 60 test
12:43
or an actually top gear passing stuff,
12:46
like how does this feel, or how does it accelerate
12:48
from low RPM in higher gears,
12:51
because that helps you understand the power band.
12:52
But it's a hard thing to explain,
12:54
and if you just quantify it,
12:56
but you have to explain to the audience
12:57
what that number means.
12:58
But also a lot of, I think you read a lot of car reviews,
13:01
especially ones written by guys
13:04
who are really good with dynamics,
13:05
they'll say, the power builds from 1800 RPM
13:10
and it remains flat, or it's peaky, or it's whatever.
13:14
Usually they, it's part of the job
13:17
to find a way to describe that power band, ideally.
13:20
Panamera Bread says, I recently learned
13:25
about the Louis Erard 2340 line.
13:29
Looks kind of like the Royal Oak.
13:30
What's up with the brand?
13:31
Is it too close to a copycat or homage?
13:34
You got a picture of this one, Zach,
13:35
because I don't really know that.
13:40
Okay, so what we're looking at is
13:42
what's called an integrated bracelet sport watch.
13:45
I think it's a pretty nice sport watch.
13:48
And I think this watch has elements.
13:51
What do you, what is it?
13:52
You've called up the dictionary deck.
13:54
I don't know how to do that.
13:55
This watch has elements of similarity
13:58
with other watches that are both cheaper and more expensive.
14:02
So this sort of case, it looks,
14:07
it's not really Royal Oak,
14:08
like the Royal Oak case is more octagonal,
14:12
or hexagonal, six or eight.
14:14
It's six, six side.
14:16
The eight sides is the Royal Oak, sorry.
14:19
This is a round dial.
14:21
It's more like the Rolex Land Dweller,
14:24
what they've just done, or the old Rolex Oyster Quartz.
14:27
Citizen also has a watch that has a case similar like this
14:34
with an integrated bracelet.
14:37
I think this is a very nice watch.
14:38
I don't know a lot about Louis Erard as a brand.
14:44
I imagine, I know a lot of their collab watches,
14:50
like the Allen Silverstein one,
14:51
that's like weird cartoony.
14:53
And I actually think that one's pretty cool.
14:55
This is literally the first time
14:56
I've ever seen this particular watch.
14:58
But I think it looks nice.
14:59
And for under 3,000 Swiss francs,
15:02
I think it's a brand that is at least familiar enough
15:07
And you're probably going to get a high quality movement,
15:10
but I've never tried this watch on.
15:13
What do we have next, my friend?
15:16
And yellow bed wetter, best one yet.
15:22
Best one yet for Pearl Jam references.
15:25
My wife has owned a 2002 Boxster S for 20 years
15:29
and is looking for something similar but newer.
15:31
Should she consider anything other than a newer Boxster S?
15:35
It's a weekend summer car, probably not.
15:38
I mean, there's, I think I can actually say
15:41
that when it comes to the Boxster, there is no substitute.
15:44
Like if you actually want a Boxster,
15:47
like what else would you get that isn't just a Boxster?
15:51
I mean, I guess if you are,
15:55
I mean, this might be weird,
15:57
but like you might want to consider
16:01
a C8 Corvette convertible, maybe.
16:07
But something tells me that if you've had a Boxster
16:10
for 20 years, the new one will be just similar enough
16:16
and just different enough that you'll have it
16:19
for another 20 years.
16:20
And if you can, I mean, you should get a gas one like now,
16:26
If you're considering, you know,
16:28
you should probably get a gas one now.
16:31
Ferrari SP90 drivers triggered by ED mode.
16:35
Me and Doug have both owned an H1 Acuntas,
16:38
a mid-engine Porsche and probably other cars.
16:41
Additionally, we have a podcast co-host with BMW.
16:45
What one car from a car celebrities collection
16:48
would you like to own, including upkeep costs
16:52
that you don't own already?
16:55
Well, I'd love a Carrera GT.
16:58
Yeah, I would want Doug's Ford GT.
17:02
I'd love a Ford GT also.
17:05
Doug is one economic tier past me.
17:08
And so when I get to where he's at,
17:11
I'll get them shits too.
17:12
He's got a great garage.
17:13
Yeah, he's got it going on.
17:15
Doug's coming on the podcast on December 1st,
17:18
which is my birthday.
17:20
That's why he's gonna be here.
17:22
He used to come on Jesus' birthday,
17:23
but now he's coming on Ferra's birthday.
17:25
He comes around Thanksgiving time.
17:27
I thought it was always Christmas.
17:28
Well, it's the Christmas end of your show.
17:31
It's a holiday season show.
17:32
We don't call it that anymore.
17:34
For the big ad rates, dude,
17:35
so we can get the hit in December.
17:37
You think this shits accidental?
17:41
Yeah, I think those are two.
17:42
I mean, didn't Tyler Hoover just buy a Galwing?
17:46
I think Tyler Hoover sold a bunch of cars
17:53
I'd love to have a Galwing.
17:55
I'm not the right person to have a Galwing,
17:58
That car drives really good.
18:00
The thing with, and also,
18:01
car celebrity is a very broad term
18:03
because there's folks like Adam L.Z.
18:04
Has rad drift cars I'd want to own.
18:07
And then Vin and Achlo's got his sick GT3 RS.
18:10
You know, Ron had a iconic car for like six.
18:13
He's got some cool stuff.
18:16
Bush did 997 says, what's the best invisible car?
18:24
Yeah, Model, I mean, probably,
18:27
probably a Model 3.
18:29
Or what's like the most,
18:33
because like everyone knows what a Model 3 is.
18:34
What's a car that is so generic
18:37
that just nobody would even know what it is?
18:40
I guess you go, what the fuck is that like?
18:42
Oh, that just looks like nothing.
18:45
Like a Chevy Malibu.
18:46
Hyundai Santa Fe, the old Santa Fe.
18:52
The old, like a CX-5 or three.
18:57
I don't know, any of the eggs.
18:59
All the eggs in white,
19:02
That will walk amongst them.
19:06
If you're trying to be,
19:07
what's his face from Breaking Bad?
19:08
Like you're moving a lot of product
19:11
and you want no one to pay attention to you.
19:13
I think you drive something that people see a lot of
19:16
and they just assume that you're Uber or a commuter.
19:19
You know, they don't want any, whatever.
19:20
A four and a half year old Dodge Caravan.
19:25
And like a sort of,
19:26
like it looks like you bought it off
19:27
like Enterprise, you know,
19:29
used a lot basically.
19:30
That's kind of, that's how you roll.
19:35
Yeah, you need to make sure it looks
19:37
clean and wash and cared for.
19:40
My Porsche's Lego says I want to replace my,
19:44
I'm looking, I need a family hauler daily commuter
19:46
to replace my 10 year old Subaru.
19:48
I'm looking at used X5s and Cayans,
19:50
but I'm tempted to look at the Taycan Cross Turismo.
19:54
We have a road trip car,
19:56
so this would be a daily commuter
19:57
for a six four human with two kids and an orange dog.
20:00
Charging at home is an option.
20:02
I've got 60 to 70 K.
20:06
You will love commuting in that car.
20:08
Get the exact same shit I got.
20:12
I'd rather commute in the EV than the X5
20:14
or the Cayan any day.
20:17
I think that, that budget will get you the car.
20:19
Make sure you get your good CPO coverage,
20:22
you know, from a dealer, you know,
20:25
don't be afraid to look nationwide,
20:27
you know, to look far from home
20:29
and then fly one way and drive at home
20:31
so you can get to know the charge network.
20:34
And if you can charge at home
20:35
and you're driving less than like, you know,
20:37
100 miles a day, you're golden.
20:40
You'll have the best car ever.
20:42
I just saw this story that Piggly Wiggly Deluxe
20:45
brings up said that Ford CEO Jim Farley said
20:48
that they have 5,000 plus open mechanics jobs
20:54
They actually referred to them as quote,
20:55
six figure mechanics jobs available.
20:58
And we are in trouble due to the lack of mechanics.
21:01
I'm a Ford dealer mechanic right now
21:04
and I've been trying to get into tech training courses
21:06
but I'm perpetually wait-listed.
21:08
I'm trying but they aren't making it easy to be a tech.
21:12
What can I do to accelerate my career?
21:14
I'm just doing recalls but I'm getting kind of bored.
21:18
Well, I don't know.
21:20
I've never worked as a tech.
21:22
I mean, that's interesting that Jim Farley would say that
21:27
and I'm wait-listed at this dealer.
21:33
So do they, does that mean they need more like totally open
21:38
and they're not promoting from within maybe as much?
21:41
I know the only insight I have,
21:42
and this is anecdotal, is an Instagram friend.
21:46
He knows who he is.
21:46
He's probably listening like he was an Audi tech,
21:48
went to an independent shop recently
21:50
but he spent years as like senior Audi tech
21:53
and he reposted this story when it came out
21:55
and he was like, this is a problem across a lot of OEMs
21:59
and it's basically like we're underpaid.
22:00
He's like, this is, and it's something,
22:03
and this is his, this is what he said,
22:05
so I haven't looked at all the numbers
22:06
but it's a common complaint is that the head of business,
22:09
whatever business that is right now goes,
22:11
nobody wants to work anymore.
22:12
And it's like, right, but we're also not getting paid
22:14
enough to keep up with the cost of living.
22:16
So that could be part of the issue.
22:18
Now as far as the promotion goes, we don't know.
22:21
They might wanna, your dealership might need you there
22:24
instead of wanting to promote you
22:25
or I don't know, there's so many variables there.
22:28
You might not be good at your job.
22:30
No, I don't know, I'm just, the joke was there.
22:33
I would say, yeah, I would, exactly.
22:35
They might not think you can handle,
22:36
no, I would just say ask, just follow up.
22:39
That sometimes that's what needs to be done.
22:40
You're gonna have to push and say,
22:41
hey, I'm really trying to level up my skills
22:45
for you guys and for me.
22:47
Why is this getting held up?
22:49
And you could talk to your boss, show them the article.
22:51
I thought we needed techs.
22:53
So what's it, just find out.
22:55
Dodge Ramican says, thoughts on Timex going up market
22:59
with the Atelier line of Swiss-powered watches.
23:03
Yeah, Timex now has a line of watches
23:05
that are like 1200 bucks, like basically what we charge
23:08
for our watches, 1300 to 1500.
23:14
It's not bad looking, right?
23:16
No, it's not bad looking.
23:17
I mean, look, I have no problem at all
23:20
with a company that's been making watches
23:22
for as long as Timex has been making watches,
23:24
which is a fucking long time.
23:27
I mean, look, they 170 years.
23:31
Timex has been making watches.
23:32
So it's not like this is a company
23:34
that just makes like cheap crap.
23:36
Like this is a fairly legitimate watch company.
23:40
They're extremely legitimate watch company.
23:42
When the generals of the North and the South
23:44
needed to meet for a battle,
23:46
they kept time with Timex.
23:48
But so yeah, their watches are normally a couple hundred bucks
23:52
and they've tried to go up market here with a couple.
23:56
I happen to think the GMT on the left of the screen
24:00
I think it's a nice looking watch.
24:01
I have not held one.
24:03
I don't necessarily know what they're like to wear
24:07
and I wouldn't ever buy one that's without trying it on.
24:13
If you can find a way to try it on somehow,
24:15
then that sounds like probably a good way to check it out.
24:18
But I'm not against this.
24:21
I think it's a nice looking watch.
24:22
It's got this cool bezel to it that sort of like dives in.
24:26
It angles in like almost like the banking
24:29
of a NASCAR track that goes around the glass.
24:33
It's dished like a McLaren wheel.
24:36
I think it's a nice looking watch.
24:37
I would like to see one in person.
24:41
It looks like it's got a nice case shape.
24:44
It's got like omega bubble to me.
24:46
Oh, yeah, the dome crystal.
24:49
Yeah, the dome crystal is good.
24:50
Like a Speedmaster.
24:53
My Speedmaster will be on within that sale.
24:57
Yeah, because I want the new Speedmaster.
24:59
That's why I'm selling everything
25:00
to get the new white dial.
25:03
Yeah, consolidate upwards.
25:12
We should just finish these.
25:14
And then we're only at an hour 15.
25:16
I said, oh, I used my bezel wrong.
25:19
Dodge Ramekin says,
25:21
recent torque converted automatics
25:23
have been lauded for their quick shifts in manual mode.
25:26
Does using manual mode place more load on the transmission
25:29
than driving aggressively in full automatic mode?
25:32
No, it doesn't place any different load.
25:35
It's the same load.
25:37
I mean, I guess like if you,
25:40
you could intentionally lug the engine
25:43
in a way that maybe isn't good in a manual mode.
25:46
Like if you upshift to do a gear too high
25:49
and like floored it from 1500 RPM,
25:52
like the car might not like that so much.
25:57
And if you drive in full automatic mode,
25:59
it's just gonna kick it up to the high,
26:00
the lowest gear available.
26:03
But like it should other,
26:04
if you were doing the same thing, it shouldn't, right?
26:07
Maybe, I don't know.
26:10
But yeah, like the most of the recent modern torque converters
26:15
with like paddles and stuff do a pretty good job.
26:19
Not always a great job.
26:19
They do a better job upshifting than downshifting.
26:22
That's the real thing.
26:24
Lucid gravity bong says,
26:25
will there be a press car for the Celesteak?
26:28
Saw one on the road in Pittsburgh
26:30
and it was mind-blowing.
26:33
Worth a call probably.
26:35
I feel like Jethro just drove one.
26:37
So I think they're just starting to let people drive them.
26:44
Larry Centenario says,
26:47
you're a cop and can pick from any cop car,
26:50
from any of the normal cop cars, what do you drive?
26:55
Police charger V8, it's got the 5.7, all wheel drive.
26:59
They had them in Colorado.
27:00
That seems like the poorest man's Jim Connell vehicle
27:05
And they had no charger as well.
27:07
Although I just saw a Tahoe spec that I liked a lot
27:13
and I feel like Tahoe's would be comfier for me
27:17
Surprised you didn't go sob like they had in,
27:21
They used to have sob cop cars.
27:22
Yeah, they had sob cop cars, yeah.
27:25
The Stig's Lausian cousin,
27:27
I might have a 2011 Challenger V8 for 5,000 bucks.
27:32
Was it used in a takeover?
27:34
I'm tempted to have it as a knock around car
27:36
after mild refurbishing with this parallel with a GR Corolla.
27:43
Fucking Challenger beater?
27:46
It's a comfy grand touring car.
27:48
I mean, the chair's nothing.
27:49
For 5K, you're not grand touring.
27:50
5K, this is a beater.
27:54
That seat is gonna be so blown out.
27:56
There's gonna be so much cigarette tar on it.
28:02
None of the buttons are gonna be visible anymore.
28:04
There's gonna be so much like dip spit.
28:06
Shiny black plastic, yeah, that's a bad car.
28:09
But you just take the interior out
28:10
and make it a fucking ripper, no doors.
28:15
The ghost of Woolworth's friend of mine
28:18
purchased some land north of Chico.
28:20
I seem to have convinced him to construct
28:23
his own dirt track to run time trials on.
28:26
You are a good friend.
28:28
There are no trees to hit,
28:29
but I think a beater car is still the smart choice.
28:32
Between a cheap Subaru, WRX, and a rear wheel drive vehicle
28:37
like a Mustang or Camaro, what would be more fun for this?
28:40
I know a guy with a $5,000 challenge.
28:43
I would say, oh man, it's gotta be rear wheel drive.
28:49
If you want fun, it's rear wheel drive.
28:51
Rear wheel drive rally car, I mean,
28:53
drifting is everywhere in all media now,
28:55
has been for a long time.
28:57
You're gonna want to do that.
28:59
Because if you got a cheap WRX,
29:02
I mean, they can be good rally cars too,
29:03
but you're gonna break stuff eventually,
29:05
like the transmission glass.
29:07
It doesn't have the good STI diffs.
29:09
I think it'll be less robust.
29:12
Rally community chime in, but I feel like
29:15
a solid axle Mustang will hold up to the beating more.
29:18
You're gonna dig some ruts.
29:19
Yeah, you need something that's gonna take abuse,
29:24
like a lot of abuse, especially if you're talking
29:27
about you and your boys sharing this car.
29:31
Oh my God, this poor car.
29:32
Additional idea, go to Rally Ready's Instagram
29:35
because they have a rally truck.
29:37
It's like a Chevy 1500, I mean, rally suspension,
29:41
wheels, tires and stuff, and watch that thing drift
29:44
and listen to it, and that will tell you what fun is,
29:46
but you could also use it as a farm truck
29:49
and carry shit with it and move things around.
29:50
Right, all of this is a good idea.
29:55
I don't have any thoughts on the next one.
29:57
Real quick, someone says his thoughts on the new Jim Khanna.
29:59
Do you think it can still be great without Brian Scotto?
30:03
Brian Scotto was involved, I think he directed it.
30:05
So it comes out in December.
30:07
So he was involved in it, actually,
30:09
and so I bet it's gonna be awesome.
30:11
And it's Travis, right?
30:13
It's Travis driving.
30:14
I don't know if there's other people involved,
30:15
but yeah, Scotto put up on his Instagram.
30:18
He was definitely on the radio and calling shots.
30:23
That was the last page.
30:25
Old Rusty Bimmer says,
30:28
you've, I think you've misread something.
30:33
This article states Musk's EV car cup.
30:35
The Tesla is offering rentals starting at $60 a day.
30:39
Tesla is including free supercharging
30:43
and supervised full-selt driving
30:44
and self-driving at no cost with the rental.
30:47
Is Elon promising we get a designated driver
30:50
No, they have to call it supervised full-selt driving
30:54
so that no one sues them for implying the car
30:58
You, the renter, are the supervisors.
31:00
They are not providing a human for you.
31:02
They also just put carplay in their cars
31:04
after fucking 12, 13 years of being like,
31:07
are you better than carplay?
31:10
We never would need carplay,
31:11
but nobody wants a fucking Tesla now.
31:13
And so they're putting carplay in
31:15
so that any scraps of people that have might been
31:17
holdouts because they need carplay
31:19
might want fucking that.
31:21
The carplay thing, I'm very interested to see
31:23
what GM does going forward.
31:25
Like they have announced over and over again,
31:26
like we're ditching carplay.
31:28
And if their system's really good
31:29
and it saves the money, I get it, but we'll see.
31:32
To not have carplay, your system has to be so good.
31:37
And like, I will give Tesla the fucking credit
31:40
that they want, that the times I've used
31:44
to fucking Tesla, their system has been that good.
31:47
And I've gone, you know what, this is pretty good.
31:49
The map is pretty good.
31:52
I like the way to use this map.
31:54
I don't need to use carplay on this specific thing.
31:57
There's been a couple of things that are clunky
31:59
with my phone that are better in carplay,
32:01
but for the most part, like Tesla and Rivian
32:04
like did the best in terms of not using carplay.
32:08
But like, there's some shit that I really like.
32:13
And you know, like my garage door opener
32:16
is a fucking app, you know, like things like that.
32:21
You know, fuck with my cue.
32:22
No, I just, and I just got a new garage door installed.
32:25
My apartment is my bro.
32:26
Is it a lift master or something?
32:28
I'll send you a picture.
32:29
Like my cue is like, well, so here's the thing
32:33
that my cue is wifi.
32:36
My garage does not have wifi.
32:36
So you can't do that.
32:37
I wonder, I wonder if there's a short way,
32:41
short range way to do it without wifi.
32:43
I don't know, but yeah, it's nice.
32:46
Quick tangent today.
32:47
The power was out in my building for three hours
32:49
and my building's like a smart building
32:50
where you use a fob to get in and out and stuff.
32:53
And we have like a dog chat with a bunch of our neighbors
32:56
and people were like, how do I get in?
32:58
Like this, there were some doors that default to unlocked,
33:02
but it was not all of them.
33:03
And so that's a little bit of an interesting problem
33:06
with smart door technology.
33:10
That's why every fucking door in here also has a key.
33:16
Yeah, you never know.
33:22
Oh, I've launched a, all right.
33:25
This dude is throwing it out there for critique.
33:27
I've launched a new watch brand in the UK called Sortie
33:32
encompassing a British design and a Swiss movement.
33:35
I'd love to get your feedback.
33:37
We're gonna do it live.
33:37
Let's see what Sortie watches looks like.
33:41
Sortie is like a mission, right?
33:43
Like it's like you fly a, it's like a fly,
33:47
I'm flying it up, yeah.
33:49
Okay, clearly a pilot's watch.
33:51
You've got a, the hands look like IWC inspired.
33:56
Big nice bold applied numerals.
33:59
Sortie is an attack made by troops
34:01
coming out from a position of defense.
34:05
Or a short trip or journey.
34:08
Oh look, so here's your dome crystal that you like.
34:11
I like the applied indices.
34:13
I like the brushing, the sunburst brushing on the dial.
34:18
I like your color selection.
34:20
I think the full black case is not bad.
34:25
This reminds me a bit, a lot of IWC.
34:30
Let's see the blue.
34:31
Let's see how the blue looks.
34:32
I like that you've not done a chrome date window.
34:36
I like that it's a monochromatic
34:38
and I like that it's not a white date wheel.
34:40
I like that that's all the same color.
34:43
Look, I think there's a very nice looking watch.
34:47
It certainly has impressions of IWC pilot watches,
34:51
but not so much that I would say this is a direct homage.
34:56
I don't know what the W is about
34:58
in the middle of the wings logo.
35:03
Yeah, I don't know what that means either.
35:04
I don't know what, the wings obviously,
35:06
it looks like a pilot, it's a plane.
35:09
Is the crown stick out farther than?
35:12
No crown guards, big crown.
35:13
Pilot watches, big crowns.
35:14
Oh, that's a thing.
35:15
Yeah, you know, in the gloves sometimes,
35:18
but IWC does this a lot.
35:22
Solid link bracelet, I like the dome crystal.
35:26
I think you've gone a little conservative
35:27
with your dial colors.
35:28
Black, blue, and green is pretty obvious.
35:31
I would try and go for something unconventional.
35:35
What Swiss movement is it, can we see?
35:37
Let's look at the green.
35:38
Green I think is nice, the alpha green,
35:41
that's my favorite color of them, of the three.
35:45
Oh yeah, this one, I agree.
35:46
Yeah, this alpha green is nice
35:48
and really shows off the brushwork of the thing.
35:52
Can you close this window or close this photo
35:54
and see the movement?
35:55
What movement is it?
35:57
Oh, I can't tell by looking at it.
35:59
I want to look at the tech specifications.
36:01
Oh, it's clearly automatic movement.
36:04
Go down to movement.
36:07
It's the next tab down there.
36:09
Swiss made, okay, it's a Solita SW290, okay.
36:13
It's a decent movement.
36:16
It's functional, it's reasonably good quality,
36:22
but it's only 41 hours power reserve,
36:25
whereas the movement we use in our watch
36:27
is 68 hours power reserve.
36:29
So I think the movement we use is a little nicer.
36:32
But how much is this?
36:32
This is like two grand, right?
36:35
So I would say for this price point,
36:40
I'd rather have an LJP movement,
36:43
although this does have small seconds and a date,
36:46
so maybe those Solitas cost a little more.
36:50
I like the one with the green dial.
36:52
And I think you should go a little more aggressive
36:54
and non-traditional with your dial colors,
36:57
but I think it's a tasteful design.
36:58
I like the accent colors, green and orange.
37:01
Over here, it's blue and white and red.
37:03
So it's not all the same across them.
37:05
And this black with the, whatever, like aqua blue,
37:09
I don't love when you do a black case with a black bracelet.
37:15
When they do a black case,
37:16
like IWC does have a black case pilot watch.
37:19
It has a strap like this one has, like my wife has.
37:24
I think it's a lot of black
37:26
when you do the black bracelet.
37:28
And a lot of times, not always,
37:29
but a lot of times watches that are full black,
37:32
they're like kind of cheapy fossil watches,
37:35
which there's nothing wrong with that
37:37
if that's the style you want.
37:38
But then this will be associated with that.
37:40
I think it looks downmarket
37:42
to make your watch a full steel black.
37:44
I get why they do it,
37:45
because they make the face pop.
37:46
And you know, this is their stealth black model.
37:48
So that's kind of cool, but I know what you mean.
37:51
But look, in general,
37:54
I think you've done a nice first pass
37:56
and a watch design here.
37:57
I think it's a tasteful looking watch.
38:00
They clearly reference his IWC without being,
38:04
getting up close to what I would call an homage.
38:10
And your name isn't like cringy,
38:14
sorty, that's a pretty good name.
38:16
I just don't get the W in between the wings.
38:19
It's got like, actually I think it's better looking
38:22
than what Brain Hodge does right now.
38:25
But anyway, not bad, not bad.
38:29
British watchmaking.
38:31
Yeah, that's all right.
38:34
So thanks guys, that's a good show.
38:36
I appreciate all of you.
38:37
I appreciate the patrons for asking such good questions
38:39
today and everybody else for tagging along with us.
38:43
We've got, what else do we have?
38:45
Do we have to plug anything right now?
38:47
The RTR video will be up.
38:49
But probably Friday.
38:51
I think Friday, yeah.
38:52
And then we're driving some other interesting things.
38:56
I think we're driving anything before Thanksgiving?
38:59
I have a V90 coming for Thanksgiving.
39:02
And maybe I'll drive the Marko, the TLG car
39:05
if it stops raining.
39:06
Yeah, it stops raining.
39:07
I wanted to take it to Good Vibes Friday
39:09
and bring my father-in-law,
39:11
but it just seems like it'll be risky for so many reasons.
39:14
Yeah, but if the roads are good enough
39:15
you could drive your car up there.
39:18
I mean, you can still go.
39:19
Your car would be fun.
39:20
Isn't your car, is your car on race tires right now?
39:22
Yes, I'd go slowly.
39:23
I have a new set of Redistine hyper-tracks
39:27
I have, if you want to go up on Friday.
39:30
Rivian is sending me an R1S,
39:33
specifically because they have that rad tuner
39:37
and the tank turn now.
39:39
So the quad motor, R1S,
39:42
does the axis spins that the G-Wagon does.
39:46
And it has a much more in-depth module
39:51
to fine-tune the power, the regen,
39:54
the steering, the suspension.
39:56
It's called the RAD tuner,
39:58
but it's like pretty in-depth of what you,
40:01
the kind of things you can change
40:03
to like really fuck with the dynamics.
40:06
So they were like, we want to send you one.
40:08
I was like, I've already reviewed this car
40:10
and they're like, no, no, but it has these two things
40:12
and we really think you should try it.
40:13
So like, all right.
40:15
So if it's going to be shitty, just take that.
40:17
I will confirm with you soon.
40:20
We can all go together, maybe.
40:22
Let's do the super turn and scare Joey.
40:24
Yeah, yeah, that's what it's for.
40:26
We make the donuts.
40:30
We love you very much.
40:31
We'll see you later.
