00:00
A listen up production.
00:04
Welcome to the motorsport brief.
00:06
There used to be an old saying, a butcher, a baker,
00:09
a candlestick maker.
00:10
How about a racer, a baker, a podium placer?
00:17
Shortly to our guest, Mark Winterbottom.
00:19
Great to get him back on the garage.
00:21
Couple of pods that we did in the last week
00:23
that I'd like to let you know about.
00:25
We spoke with Dean Herridge, who I was following,
00:28
He went on to win Sunraja Safari for Subaru.
00:31
And I caught up with his dad, a former Australian rally
00:34
champion, Rob, in that Convo as well.
00:36
So too, Tony Quinn, who won that event in recent years.
00:39
His Dakar spec, Navara, is super impressive.
00:42
All three are in our feature library.
00:44
That's a nice little short cast.
00:46
And then Jaden O'Jada joined us
00:48
for a separate bonus episode for the week.
00:51
The tough path that he's taken all the way
00:54
to a Mercedes contract.
00:56
And he's returned to Walkenshaw and Dredi United
00:58
for the enduroes alongside Ryan Wood.
01:00
The youngsters did a very good job at the bend.
01:03
To our guest, let's get straight into it.
01:05
Fantastic to see him backracing a supercar.
01:08
Looked like a great weekend for him in South Australia too.
01:12
Hello, Mark Winterbottom.
01:13
Good day, Greg Ross. How are you?
01:15
I'm great, mate. Back on the podium.
01:16
What a way to start the co-driving chapter.
01:20
I felt pretty good, mate.
01:21
One starts one podium.
01:23
So I'm feeling pretty good at the moment, to be honest.
01:27
But nice to be back in a Tickford car.
01:30
It was pretty emotional, to be honest.
01:33
Like I had a really good career with those guys
01:35
and a lot of the same guys and girls are still there.
01:38
And then I just putting that suit on and walking in that truck
01:41
and brings back lots of good memories.
01:44
So, and not only that, all the Ford fans
01:47
that embraced it and took me back, you know?
01:49
So had a great weekend and had a lot of fun.
01:53
Tell me a little bit more about it,
01:55
perhaps what you're most pleased about
01:57
from a driving point of view.
01:59
And where there things, you know, because you've gone,
02:01
you've had such an amazing career as a full-timer
02:04
where you're doing it a bit more regularly.
02:06
Pardon the pun, was there anything that was rusty,
02:08
mate, that you needed to tune up?
02:10
Definitely. Like, when you're not in the car regularly,
02:13
there's little things...
02:15
I feel like I drove really well and mistake-free.
02:17
I felt OK in that aspect.
02:19
But just closing speed on cars
02:22
and that sort of awareness around you,
02:26
normally I wouldn't look like at the start,
02:28
I could hear or feel cars when I'm in it, in the mix regularly.
02:32
But when I started, I had a good launch,
02:34
but I had to visually look in the mirror a few times
02:37
of when I could cut across where,
02:39
when you're in it full-time,
02:40
you kind of feel those little, when to just,
02:44
you know, the little tap I'm ready to come across
02:47
But, you know, I think Taylor and Ben's a great warm-up
02:51
for Bathurst because there's a lot of mistakes
02:53
that Taylor and Ben's and you don't get away with them at Bathurst.
02:56
So I felt nice. I felt good to be back in the car,
02:59
but I've got improvement for sure and come Bathurst.
03:02
I think you'll see a, hopefully, a bit faster effort from myself,
03:05
but I felt pretty comfortable.
03:06
I love that. That comment just around, I guess,
03:09
the things that become a bit innate or autopilot
03:12
and just getting it back to that level.
03:15
Can I talk about, not co-driver pressure,
03:17
maybe they're not the right words,
03:18
but I mean, it was a mega performance by Scott Pie, who you know.
03:21
I mean, Todd Hazelwood, I thought, did a really good job as well.
03:24
What's the worth of a good co-driver, such as yourself,
03:27
perhaps a bit more evident at the bend?
03:29
It's funny. On the grid, gone are the days where you used to say,
03:33
who's the main and who's the co,
03:35
because they're all fast now and they're in good cars.
03:38
Like, the gap between the co and the main,
03:40
they're almost doing the same lap time.
03:42
So it's almost like two little races.
03:45
I had mine at the start
03:46
and I had to hand the car over effectively.
03:49
Your job is to hand the car over in a really good spot,
03:52
brake, still in check, steering straight, no panel damage.
03:56
You do your stint, you get out
03:57
and you give it to the big guys to bring it home.
03:59
That's kind of co-driver 101 spec, but they're all fast.
04:03
Like some of those guys in that first stint
04:05
that you just rolled out,
04:06
they're all worthy of main game drives.
04:08
It's just a little battle in itself, but I had a lot of fun
04:11
and you do feel the pressure a bit
04:13
because I feel like the Enduro Cup has more importance than ever
04:17
and the way the finals are structured,
04:19
the 25 point bonus, which is a bit complicated,
04:22
but the 25 point bonus that you get to win the Enduro Cup
04:26
to go to the guys finals chances is huge.
04:29
It's the same as what Feeney's done.
04:31
His whole first part of his solo sprint round stuff
04:36
So we've got try and win, we've got to be consistent
04:38
and a DNF could lose your main guy 25 points,
04:42
which has championship ramifications come December.
04:45
So I think there's more in the line now than there ever has been.
04:49
Can I just drill into a little bit on those
04:52
that maybe went the alternate strategy
04:54
and started their regulars first?
04:57
Has that prompted a bit of conversation?
04:59
Are people now starting to think
05:00
whether that approach might have merit at Bathurst and so on?
05:04
Always is and I think the rule,
05:06
that was why the rule was so controversial
05:08
when it come in of starting your main, not your code
05:10
because you've got to have the option
05:12
and what it does do is you always do the check of flag
05:16
and then you come back from there
05:18
and that's how you do strategy.
05:19
You don't, although we put a lot of emphasis on the start
05:22
it's about the windows and the safety car windows
05:24
and all the numbers you can open to come home.
05:27
So Bathurst, there's a maximum driver time
05:30
that a driver can do for the main.
05:32
I think it's three hours and eight minutes.
05:34
So realistically, they can't get in the car
05:36
until 80 laps to go.
05:38
But if a safety car comes out with 85 to go,
05:43
80 laps to go, whatever the number is
05:45
and you haven't done your co-driver laps, you're in trouble.
05:48
So that's why you start co-drivers at the start
05:51
to try and get their laps out of the way.
05:53
But these days, if you have a good co-driver
05:56
it doesn't matter if it's winter, bottom, v-castecchi,
06:00
wind cup versus whoever.
06:02
It's, we can sort of hold our own a little bit now.
06:05
So strategy is very important and it depends on who you got.
06:08
How they want to play it, but effectively it's the last lap
06:11
and work its way forward.
06:12
So that's strategy 101 in a pretty quick nutshell.
06:16
Now, you've had a bit of time to ponder this next question.
06:19
Sandan has great rich history
06:22
in our endurance aspect of the calendar.
06:26
Fabulous new venue at Tailand Bend this time.
06:28
How do you feel a couple of days on having done,
06:31
you know, 500 around there in the weekend generally?
06:35
The tracks are really cool and the event themselves,
06:38
the Shaheens and the whole team there,
06:40
they really put a lot on for the fans.
06:42
So it would be nice if they had bigger numbers
06:45
because the amount of effort they put into it,
06:48
the numbers weren't as big as what they should be rewarded for.
06:52
The only thing it had against it was no safety car.
06:54
And I think the fact that it's too good a circuit
06:57
with all the runoff and everything,
06:59
there wasn't a safety car where Sandan has tire, dig,
07:05
It's a track that hasn't had any money spent on it.
07:09
You bounce off the curbs and reliability and everything.
07:11
So you get those safety cars and it narrows the gaps.
07:13
So, you know, I think Tailand Bend,
07:15
the only downside to the race was no safety car.
07:18
There was big gaps,
07:19
but at the same time,
07:21
you saw some pretty cracking battles, you know,
07:23
and you just had to look through the pack
07:25
to see them sometimes.
07:26
But yeah, I thought it was a great event.
07:28
I thought, you know, they did an amazing job
07:32
and that's year one.
07:33
So it's only going to improve, you know,
07:34
they can look at it, see what worked, what didn't.
07:37
I'd love to bring back that co-driver race
07:38
that they had at Sandan.
07:39
Remember that one where pretty well,
07:41
everyone just lost the plot and crashed into each other.
07:45
It'd be good if they had one of them at Tailand Bend
07:47
because you picture that run to turn one
07:50
in a sprint format with co-drivers.
07:53
That'd be pretty cool.
07:54
So there's probably a few other things I could spice up,
07:56
but for year one, I thought it was a success for sure.
07:59
I reckon that suggestion was something
08:01
that Scott Pye talked about on his part in the lead-up
08:03
and I second that suggestion.
08:06
Tweaks to the forward in the lead-up.
08:08
I'm a bit of a believer you need a few races
08:10
to really understand, you know, what that's like,
08:12
what it does and so on.
08:14
Could you feel that?
08:15
Do you think it will help at Bathurst?
08:17
I'm not sure, to be honest,
08:18
and I haven't been in it all year,
08:20
so I can't really comment on the car too much.
08:24
I'm out of that side.
08:25
I'll turn up on Thursday
08:27
and they gave me a race suit,
08:28
a calendar and an objective and I just drove the car, you know?
08:32
So, but it felt okay, but it actually,
08:36
I don't know, I drove the Camaro last year
08:38
and the Camaro is very smooth.
08:39
I think the engine in the Camaro
08:41
and the way it operates was very smooth.
08:44
And I think, you know,
08:46
I think the Ford's always been strong at tail and bend too.
08:49
I just don't know the answer to that one,
08:50
but come Bathurst, long straight, low diff ratio,
08:53
that's when we'll see if it's closer or not,
08:57
but 100%, there's been a deficit from watching.
09:00
You know, I think the chef teams underperformed
09:03
at tail and bend too,
09:04
which we didn't get to see Feeney go head to head
09:07
with Castecchi and Waters,
09:08
which he would have Cam Hill, you know, those guys.
09:10
So, don't know, we'll find out at Bathurst.
09:13
I hope my car's good.
09:15
I don't really care about the others too much, to be fair.
09:18
But always been a good track for Tickford.
09:20
Always been a good track for Brody.
09:23
Time will tell, you know, in a couple of weeks time.
09:25
Spoken like a true racing driver.
09:27
Hey, I want to continue this pod for a little bit longer
09:30
Can we get you Frosty Des to hang on there for a bit for us?
09:36
This is the Motorsport brief,
09:38
wrapping up the bend 500 and a little look ahead
09:41
to Bathurst with the Baker.
09:44
I was with Billy Brownless and James Brasior
09:47
from Triple M's Rush Hour recently.
09:48
They were really quick to tell me
09:49
that they'd spoken with you.
09:50
They loved the chat and so on.
09:52
But they were focused on this move.
09:54
When did this become a thing?
09:55
Are you any good at making croissants,
09:58
putting a knot in the knot rolls,
09:59
or do you just sort of step back
10:01
and worry about it from a business point of view?
10:03
I think Billy Brownless has any interest in motorsport.
10:06
But as soon as you talk calories and diners,
10:08
he was my best mate.
10:09
So I got his attention pretty quick.
10:12
But, you know, funny, motorsport's funny.
10:14
You race your whole career
10:16
and that's all you're qualified to do.
10:17
But when it stops, you have to do something.
10:21
And I'm good friends with a pastry chef
10:24
and he's had very good businesses
10:26
and he needed someone to come in to help
10:29
with the business side, the staff, the front of house,
10:32
the admin, Renee's doing the finances in the background.
10:35
And he's the man behind the tools
10:38
and he pumps out some of the best bakery items,
10:41
croissants, pies, donuts, whatever you want
10:44
So it's really good.
10:46
And you've got to team yourself up
10:47
with really good, positive, happy, go-getting people.
10:51
And that's who I've found.
10:53
His name's Simon, he's a cracker.
10:55
So the happy bakers at Brunswick and Airport West.
10:59
So if you can push your way past Billy,
11:01
we can serve you well, mate.
11:05
But really fun, yeah, it's a lot of fun
11:07
and it's a whole new sort of side of business
11:10
that I haven't seen before.
11:11
I have a sweet tooth.
11:12
So I will check it out at some point.
11:14
That naturally leads me to the book
11:17
and we'll put more details on that in the app description.
11:19
It's gone incredibly well from a sales point of view
11:23
and I guess you'd call it like a ranking point of view.
11:25
How cathartic was that whole process for you?
11:27
You really opened up, mate.
11:28
I was chuffed when you came on the pod
11:30
for a feature episode late last year
11:32
but you went to a whole new level with the book.
11:35
Yeah, I think, you know, it's funny,
11:37
I'm very private person
11:38
but the book sort of says otherwise to be honest
11:41
because, you know, you open up
11:43
and a lot of the stuff I said in the book,
11:44
I've never even told my best mates.
11:46
So it was a nice way of putting pen to paper
11:49
and kind of having a bit of therapy
11:51
because there's some stuff you hold on to as a kid
11:54
and I don't know, it builds the person you are.
11:57
So when I did the story,
11:58
I thought it was really important to start
12:00
the good stuff, the bad stuff
12:02
because it all mould you as a person, you know?
12:04
So, yeah, it was tough.
12:07
It took about 18 months to do the book
12:09
and some of the chapters, you know, around mum
12:12
and that side was very hard to write
12:14
because, you know, it is someone that I miss every day,
12:17
you know, and I can't pick up the phone and ring your arm
12:20
and I miss those moments.
12:21
So it was really nice.
12:22
She never, when she passed away,
12:24
her last words were never forget me, you know?
12:26
And it was a bit of a, I don't know, tribute to her too
12:30
and just the battle she had
12:31
and I think it's important to cover that stuff.
12:33
So very tough to write down
12:35
but on the flip side, when I've done a few signings,
12:38
there's been one girl come up actually the other day,
12:41
18 years old, her mum's going through breast cancer,
12:44
exactly the same sort of story
12:46
and she said that the book gave her inspiration
12:49
and that was really important to me
12:50
because I think if people can connect and feel like, you know,
12:55
we're going through bad things,
12:56
if there's someone else who you can relate to,
12:59
it kind of gave her a bit of hope as well and it was nice.
13:02
I really enjoy those comments.
13:03
You know, Ross, it was nice to, you know, talk in depth
13:08
but have people relate to it.
13:10
That 18 months worth of work in that one moment
13:13
makes it all worthwhile, mate.
13:15
I hope that Phelpsie has a bit of time
13:18
and some column space for what hopefully will be
13:20
another bathyswim that you can add to this story.
13:23
You've been mentoring on the super two side of things.
13:26
Have you enjoyed that?
13:27
How have those drivers come along during the year?
13:29
They're good kids, they're really good.
13:31
Oh, young men, I'm worried.
13:33
One of them's 18, 19 and I've got an outlook
13:35
on what my 14 year old's going to be like
13:38
in five years' time.
13:39
So I'm trying to learn what they're doing
13:42
so I've got a bit of a hand on my young fella
13:45
but they're good kids, very talented, super respectful
13:49
and they're so passionate for the sport
13:52
and it sparked another little inner thing in me
13:54
that that was me on day one and they're just so hungry.
13:58
They're like a sponge, they ask you so many questions.
14:01
They give you a hug, they appreciate
14:02
what you're giving them and it's really cool.
14:05
Like I really, really enjoy it
14:06
and it's made me not miss driving
14:09
because I'm seeing other kids succeed
14:11
and try and live their dreams.
14:13
So it's been really good.
14:15
There was a lot of pressure on the weekend.
14:16
I raced three of them, three of the four of them
14:19
and I give them a rev up about their starts
14:22
because their starts haven't been that great
14:24
and I had to make sure I got a good start.
14:26
I can tell you on that start line at Tailum Bend
14:30
I have not been more worried about a start
14:32
because I were all watching
14:33
and I think I beat three of them
14:36
so I still have some street cred
14:39
but that was one of the most nerve-wracking starts
14:41
purely for that reason, just to show them
14:44
that what I've been telling them has some merit.
14:48
There was a bit of pride on the line for that one.
14:51
Leading by example, two to get us
14:53
to the finish line of this episode.
14:54
Austin Cindrick will be with Tickford at Adelaide.
14:57
Lot of chat around that.
14:58
I think he's talked about on a US pod
15:00
spending a month down under
15:01
which is awesome, cool wildcard story.
15:04
He's got NASCAR to think about in the interim obviously.
15:07
Will you kind of help there at all
15:09
with either some advice around preparations?
15:11
I mean, that's a massive grand final weekend, isn't it?
15:13
Yeah, I'm not sure what the team will get me to do
15:15
but I've got the Super 2 boys
15:17
which they're going for their own championship
15:19
so I'll be hanging out with them
15:23
Like I think these endurance races, it's funny
15:26
you really build a camaraderie with the team
15:28
and there's aspects that I can bring
15:31
that I'm not emotionally invested
15:32
like I can kind of come in, see things and get out
15:36
where when you're there all year
15:37
you sometimes look at things and I don't know
15:40
they're in the back of your mind and they trigger
15:42
so I think at later I might be able to if Cam
15:45
is still in the mix which I really hope he is
15:48
just be a bit of a sounding board for him
15:50
that interim between the team and driver
15:52
and I really want to see him win it
15:55
so I'll do whatever I can to help him
15:57
and the Super 2 boys I think
15:58
if we can finish first, second, third and fourth
16:00
which we're currently sitting
16:02
that'd be huge for them.
16:04
So I'll get out Sunday night
16:06
let them party at the gala
16:07
because those young guys I don't want to be anywhere near them
16:10
once they celebrate with alcohol
16:12
because I can't keep up with them when we're sober
16:15
so I'll let them party
16:17
but it's massive weekend for the whole Tickford program
16:20
it's going to be huge.
16:21
And you have squeezed in this year some broadcasting
16:24
which I think you've done a super job at
16:26
an alternate kind of freshness that you've added.
16:29
Have you enjoyed that?
16:30
What's perhaps been the biggest learning
16:31
on that side for you?
16:32
Yeah, it's a new appreciation for
16:35
that I've always ranked you as one of the OGs, mate
16:38
so I have a new appreciation for what you do
16:41
and it's funny, you see good in everyone
16:43
which when you race them, you see them all as the enemy
16:46
when you commentate and talk about them
16:48
you actually see all the stuff they do well
16:50
so it's actually really nice to see good in people
16:53
not break down the weaknesses when you're competing
16:56
so really enjoyed it
16:58
even guys like Garth, when we raced
17:01
we went head to head
17:02
and I don't think we spoke much
17:04
it was a couple of grunts really at each other
17:06
where now you chat and
17:09
everyone's got so much in common
17:10
so you see the good side of people
17:11
and I've really enjoyed it
17:13
and then yeah chatting to the drivers
17:14
and watching a bit more in depth through the coverage
17:17
and taking that interest
17:18
it's been really cool so
17:21
some of that stuff when they say to you
17:24
we're crossing, ask a question and you ask it
17:26
and then they go one more and you go
17:29
oh that was a really good question
17:30
I can't come up with another one
17:32
it gives you that spare of the moment
17:34
what do I do with my hands type thing
17:37
so new appreciation but
17:40
you're talking about something you love
17:42
and if you show that you love it
17:44
then people will be infectious by it
17:46
and very lucky to do what we do
17:48
so I've had a good time
17:49
Terrific it oozes through the coverage
17:52
go well at the mountain
17:52
I will see you up there
17:55
surely on Tuesday or Wednesday
17:56
there is time for a chin up competition against Cam
17:59
make sure you show him that you've still got the edge
18:01
against him there at the mountain mate
18:03
I've got him covered for chins
18:09
fantastic to get Mark Winterbot on the pod today
18:12
I will be there with the triple M team
18:13
for a special radio coverage of the 1000
18:16
that is it for today
18:17
we'll catch you next week
