03:27
Let us surprise you.
03:29
It is another Saturday in CCOL and when we call talk, talk cars or trucks or vans
03:34
or the problems you may be having with yours.
03:37
And maybe we can get some solutions,
03:39
or at least find out what could be ailing before you bring it in for service.
03:43
It's your favorite dealer, your favorite shop.
03:45
With us this morning as usual, next stop, AOC certified technician,
03:50
master tech at Lloyd's Automotive runs the joint in a great place.
03:53
It is Nick, good morning.
03:55
Good morning, Denny.
03:57
How was the week now at Lloyd's?
04:00
It's beautiful weather.
04:00
That's what it was.
04:06
Is there a busier time of year for shops like yours?
04:11
Well, we're fortunate to stay pretty consistent,
04:14
but I will tell you typically the fair time and then the depths of February
04:19
are usually a little bit softer.
04:21
So, you know, guys will take time off to go to the fair or take their win notifications.
04:25
And it's, you know, you can't be running 100% all the time.
04:28
So when we have a few moments of pause,
04:31
it gives a chance for everybody to kind of rest up and get ready to go.
04:35
If you happen to have a question about your,
04:38
and you don't have to be a motorhead, as we like to say, or a gearhead.
04:41
If you drive and you're having problems, let's hear your question.
04:45
Could be any kind of a car care question, actually.
04:47
You can phone it in.
04:48
You can text it in whichever is easier.
04:50
One number will do it.
04:56
You can ask Nick that question until, well, just about 745.
05:00
Nick takes his leave then to make way for Ted Ferrell's wine chat.
05:03
So we always like to say sooner is better than later,
05:07
as far as asking your question.
05:09
We get some unusual, good questions today coming in.
05:14
A bunch of them, as a matter of fact.
05:15
Let's see if we can start with this one.
05:19
My steering wheel has a whining or rubbing noise when turning the wheel.
05:24
What could it be and what do I need to do?
05:27
Well, I suppose it depends on where the noise is coming from.
05:31
It's possible it's from the steering column itself.
05:34
And obviously at the base of the steering wheel,
05:35
where it goes through the firewall under the hood,
05:38
there might be a grommet there that might be getting dry
05:40
that needs a little lubricating.
05:42
If it's out in the steering suspension components under the vehicle,
05:46
we have salt and winter and all those different things,
05:48
it can dry out some of those components.
05:50
So something might need a little grease there also.
05:53
The last thing is if you're hearing a noise,
05:55
it could be something's becoming worn.
05:57
So it's kind of your heads up,
05:59
but it's kind of squeaking that you're telling you
06:00
I need some repair maintenance.
06:02
So if you do hear a noise, it doesn't make an emergency,
06:05
but you definitely want to make a note of it
06:06
so the next time you're in for service,
06:08
you can have someone take a look at it.
06:10
I recall in the recent past of needing to bring my vehicle into Lloyd's
06:16
because I thought it was like a power steering pump
06:20
or a belt or a fluid or something.
06:22
And one of your technicians found out,
06:25
and you got to help me with this,
06:26
was it like a backer plate?
06:28
Is that term right?
06:31
Well, what it is is we call it a backing plate
06:33
or it's a little tin shield that protects the brakes
06:36
from any of that road debris.
06:38
And as I mentioned before in our climate,
06:39
we tend to get some rust.
06:41
And when rust gets into that metal there,
06:42
it'll kind of warp or swallow up
06:44
and it can get a little too close to the brake rotor
06:47
or a little rub, make that squeaky noise.
06:48
So when you hear a noise, that's another good point.
06:51
When you hear a noise,
06:52
it doesn't necessarily mean
06:53
it's a really big, expensive ordeal.
06:55
It could be something as simple as that backing plate
06:57
which takes a little tweaking,
06:58
pull it away from the rotor and the noise is gone.
07:01
So don't always assume I hear something,
07:03
I don't want to go in and find out what it is.
07:05
Sometimes it's not that bad.
07:07
Yeah, I asked the technician,
07:08
He says, I bent it back.
07:12
But it was an easy fix.
07:13
So yeah, don't be worried.
07:15
Plus that's a safety feature.
07:19
I bought, I'm looking at another text
07:21
that just came in a bit ago.
07:22
I bought a used radio on eBay for my Jeep Liberty.
07:26
I installed it and now it wants a four digit code.
07:33
What is that about?
07:34
Yeah, some vehicles will have a security feature built in
07:39
and you might be able to check with the dealership.
07:42
The complicated part here is that that code
07:45
in that radio may be from the original vehicle.
07:48
So you need to go back a few steps,
07:50
check with the place where you bought the radio,
07:52
see if you can get that vehicle identification number.
07:55
Then you may have to reach out to the dealership,
07:57
have them access that database
07:59
and see if they can help you.
08:01
I'm not sure, you know,
08:03
radios don't get taken or stolen like they used to.
08:06
So they're a little more willingness to help you.
08:08
But a lot of times you need to have proof of ownership,
08:10
which on your vehicle you'll have,
08:12
but on that old vehicle you won't.
08:13
So it might take a little legwork,
08:16
but I think if you stay persistent
08:17
and you contact the right people,
08:19
maybe you can get that four digit code to get that one.
08:22
Let's grab a couple of phone calls.
08:23
Nick, John is checking in from St. Paul,
08:26
I believe, this morning.
08:28
What is your question for Nick?
08:29
Yes, I have a 2021 Toyota Sienna Hybrid.
08:34
And I've always jumped neighbors
08:36
and things like that in the winter time.
08:38
And I noticed the 12-volt battery is back by the rear lift door.
08:45
How do you, can you jump other cars with a hybrid
08:50
or how does that work?
08:53
Well, there's two separate electrical systems.
08:55
There's still the 12-volt system
08:56
and you refer to the 12-volt battery,
08:58
which commonly used to be under the hood.
09:00
We all open the hood and you'd see it right there
09:02
behind the headlight.
09:02
Well, in trying to balance the weight of vehicles
09:06
and redistribute the weight of the vehicle,
09:08
oftentimes they'll be hidden
09:09
in the back of the vehicle under a seat.
09:11
You know, there's all kinds of places
09:13
they can hide a battery these days.
09:15
And as far as jump-starting,
09:18
I would tell you they probably advise you against it.
09:21
There is still under the hood a port.
09:24
They have access to the 12-volts,
09:26
but I'm not sure it's really designed
09:28
to run that much current through
09:30
to jump-start another vehicle.
09:32
You know, you can look in your owner's manual.
09:34
They might have a way to jump-start your vehicle,
09:37
which is sending some of that power in,
09:38
but I'm not sure it's really designed
09:40
to be sending that power back out.
09:41
So I would pause and honestly,
09:45
there's a lot of like those handheld jump packs
09:47
that people have these days
09:48
that might be a little safer option
09:51
to keep you from having a problem with your vehicle.
09:54
Interesting change in vehicles.
09:57
Let's grab, before we break,
09:58
let's grab another call.
09:59
Jack Culling from Duluth, I believe.
10:02
What is your question this morning?
10:05
Yeah, I'm here for the fair,
10:06
and my question persistently is about rotating tires.
10:11
I've owned several vehicles in my life,
10:15
I've talked with, you know,
10:17
manufacturers of the vehicle that I,
10:20
you know, that I'm leasing or purchasing.
10:22
It seems everyone has a different opinion
10:26
about when to rotate your tires,
10:28
because there's so many different kinds of tires.
10:32
What's the general rule for rotating your tires?
10:36
It's a good question in the end of your ride.
10:37
Everybody has their opinion.
10:39
It's a subjective question.
10:41
Every other oil change isn't bad.
10:44
I mentioned before I bought a brand new truck last year,
10:47
and it's got these big tires on it.
10:49
So I actually rotate them every oil change
10:50
because I don't want them getting worn abnormally.
10:52
So it's going to really depend on the vehicle, the tire,
10:56
If we're seeing that they're worn abnormally,
10:59
you maybe need to do them a little more often.
11:01
There's some vehicles that might go 15,000 miles.
11:03
So I haven't done a good job of answering your question,
11:07
because it's just that it's subjective based on the tire,
11:09
the vehicle, and the wear pattern, quite honestly.
11:13
I know we're going to break here in a moment.
11:14
I'm going to pose this interesting question from a listener
11:17
and give you a chance to think about it for a while
11:21
But the listener sent a text and it says this,
11:24
there's been all kinds of talk about what the forest fire
11:27
smoke can do to humans.
11:29
But I haven't heard anything about our vehicles.
11:31
What kind of damage do you think could have caused
11:35
to our vehicles, if any?
11:37
We'll take a break.
11:38
We'll talk about that topic and get more calls
11:40
and more text questions on CCO Car Care Show 6514619226
11:46
from News Talk A3O.
11:50
Have a good Saturday morning to you.
11:51
Welcome back to CCO's Car Care Show.
11:53
Denny Long here along with Master Technician
11:56
and the owner of Lloyd's Automotive
11:59
on beautiful Grand Avenue in St. Paul.
12:00
Nick, before we get that last question,
12:03
tell folks who need to help from Lloyd's
12:05
where you are located.
12:08
So if you're at the fair today
12:09
and you head south down on Snelling,
12:11
you take a left on Grand.
12:13
It's about a mile and a half on the right hand side.
12:15
It's 982 Grand Avenue,
12:18
right on the corner of Grand and Chatsworth.
12:20
But we were not here over the weekend,
12:22
but during the work week we're there.
12:23
It's going to be a beautiful week.
12:24
So if you're out on a stroll on a walk stop there
12:26
and say hello, if you have a question
12:28
or need some advice, obviously,
12:29
we're always willing to help you.
12:30
You don't have to be afraid.
12:32
It's a question we can always answer.
12:34
So you can reach us at 651-228-1316.
12:39
And then finally, check out our website
12:40
which is LloydsAutomotive.net.
12:43
And we'll get you that information
12:45
before Nick leaves us,
12:46
which is close to 7.45 this morning.
12:48
Let's hear from you if you have
12:50
any kind of a car care question at 651-461-9226.
12:55
Before the break, pose that question.
12:57
Interesting one, I've never seen this or heard,
12:59
I'm sure you do, about forest fires.
13:03
They can affect humans, certainly.
13:05
But could it do any kind of damage to cars?
13:08
Certainly volcanoes with ash can, but what about smoke?
13:13
You know, I don't think the smoke,
13:15
the significant damage,
13:17
obviously I think the cabin filter
13:18
might be affected a bit.
13:19
You can pull the particulates into the filter
13:23
and it can maybe have a little lasting smell
13:25
or restriction with the airflow there.
13:27
The filter's doing its job, it's filtering the air.
13:29
So once that's done its job, it's time to replace it.
13:32
So I would say maybe next time you're in for service,
13:35
if it's been a while, a couple of years or something
13:38
or so many miles per manual,
13:41
I would say I'd probably have that looked at
13:43
and possibly even replaced.
13:44
What about the engine air filter element?
13:49
Same thing, the engine air filter is under constant use
13:54
any time the engine's running, obviously,
13:55
where the cabin filter's only affected
13:57
while we're using the heating air conditioning system.
13:59
So it's part of the maintenance interval,
14:01
you probably need to inspect it when you have the service done.
14:04
Per their recommendation, based on their inspection,
14:07
you might need it replaced
14:08
or you might have another oil change or two left in it.
14:10
But I don't think you're gonna see
14:12
significant difference in the effect
14:16
that the smoke would have on either filter.
14:18
I think it's part of what they go through in their regular life.
14:21
So maybe it's slightly different but nothing measurable.
14:24
Yeah, that makes sense.
14:26
All right, looking at another text.
14:28
Good morning, Danny and Nick.
14:29
Our 2016 pilot doesn't start on the first try sometimes
14:34
unless I pump the brake once.
14:36
What could that be?
14:38
I think that's coincidental.
14:39
I don't know, the brake obviously has a switch
14:43
that tells the vehicle to go out of parking the gear
14:46
but the brake wouldn't have any effect
14:47
or there's no direct input to starting the vehicle.
14:50
So I think that might be coincidental.
14:52
Obviously, if that's a little trick
14:53
that kind of helps something else was happening in there,
14:56
so if you continue to have a problem,
14:58
you get the vehicle in, share that information
15:00
because then they can kind of go through
15:02
a diagnostic procedure process,
15:04
look at that information
15:05
and see how it might be affecting the vehicle.
15:07
But as far as I know,
15:09
there's no direct connection
15:10
between the brake pedal and starting the vehicle.
15:12
Now, my vehicle, you need to step on the brake
15:19
But is that not typical?
15:24
Well, no, actually, I'm sorry, I'm distracted.
15:27
I'm like, on my truck, I have to also.
15:30
Let's back up a little bit.
15:31
You know, Denny, it's been a long week
15:33
and here I am trying to figure out which way's up.
15:36
No, you're correct.
15:37
You do have to hold the brake pedal
15:39
to start the vehicle.
15:41
You know, obviously, they don't want the vehicle
15:42
rolling if it was not in park
15:44
or, you know, obviously with the manual transmission,
15:46
which there's fewer of those these days,
15:48
but with an automatic transmission,
15:49
which is most vehicles,
15:50
you press the brake pedal to start the vehicle.
15:54
If it were in neutral or in gear,
15:56
they don't want the vehicle hopping forward
15:57
or backward and hitting something or someone.
15:59
I'd like to hear the result when that listener
16:02
has it serviced if they find the answer to that.
16:06
Be interested in hearing the result of that.
16:08
All right, here is yet another text.
16:11
In Audi Q5, 164,000 miles on it,
16:15
just before coming to a stop, occasionally,
16:18
Instead of a smooth stop,
16:20
there are subtle hesitations.
16:23
What do you think that's about?
16:26
Maybe or what if the brake rotors
16:28
are a little bit warped
16:29
and you're kind of slowing down
16:30
and you kind of have that little
16:33
like little, you know,
16:34
because if the brake pedal
16:35
or the brake rotors warp,
16:37
there's imperfections,
16:38
a little bit of a wave to it.
16:39
So as that rotates with the wheel,
16:40
the brake pads contact that wave.
16:43
You're going to get that little sensation there.
16:44
So that might be noteworthy.
16:47
If it's something more significant,
16:50
you know, like ABS brake cycling,
16:51
you know, I think you'd have a warning light.
16:53
So if there's no warning light,
16:54
I don't think there's anything
16:55
with the anti-lock or traction control system.
16:57
But I wonder if there's something
16:59
with the braking system
17:00
or even maybe a tire is a little bit all around.
17:01
You're not really noticing it
17:03
until the slower speeds.
17:05
But whenever you notice something
17:07
that's speed related,
17:08
try to think what's affected by that.
17:10
So as you're slowing down,
17:11
I'm applying the brakes.
17:12
So when I apply the brakes,
17:14
Or if it's an acceleration
17:15
where you notice a change,
17:16
or while you're turning,
17:17
all those little tidbits of information
17:19
would be very helpful for us
17:20
to try to pinpoint what's it related to.
17:23
So if you have, you know,
17:25
a problem like this,
17:25
really any problem, to be honest,
17:29
when you bring the vehicle
17:30
and share all the information,
17:32
it does help us find the problem
17:33
a little bit quicker,
17:34
which oftentimes will save you some money.
17:36
Oh yeah, absolutely.
17:37
The more information
17:38
talked about the better.
17:40
Looking at another text
17:41
that just came in a moment ago,
17:44
and the rest of it is in English,
17:45
I have a 2011 Toyota Camry,
17:48
four cylinder automatic.
17:50
The last two oil changes I've done,
17:53
very small brass particles in the oil.
17:56
The engine doesn't run or sound
17:57
any different than in the past.
17:59
What the heck am I dealing with here?
18:00
Thanks for a great show.
18:02
Wow, what do you think of that?
18:04
I wonder what metallic
18:07
material, obviously,
18:08
there's not actual brass in the engine.
18:10
Some of the bearing materials
18:12
but I don't think you would ever see,
18:15
bearing material in the oil,
18:17
you would have something
18:18
significantly wrong with the engine.
18:19
You would have some noise,
18:22
poor drivability concerns.
18:24
I wonder if we don't have any
18:30
carbon that's kind of
18:31
building and growing,
18:32
that's making its way into the oil.
18:33
So while you're draining the oil,
18:34
you see some of these particles
18:36
one thing you can do is take a small sample
18:40
in something glass,
18:41
maybe run a light through it,
18:42
try to figure out what it is,
18:44
maybe try to strain it,
18:45
separate it, get a sample of it
18:46
to try to better idea what it might be.
18:49
But I don't think it's actual metal.
18:50
If you had metal shavings,
18:51
honestly, I think you'd have
18:53
much larger problems
18:54
and be very audible
18:55
and very poor running vehicle.
18:59
Looking at the text,
18:59
maybe you can remember this,
19:01
about last week's show,
19:02
we were at the fair.
19:03
Big shout out and a thank you
19:05
to Nick for last week's info
19:07
on a Lincoln windows opening
19:10
with a long hold of the remote.
19:13
The owner was worried
19:14
about the random mouse damage.
19:16
We really appreciate the help.
19:19
did you remember that at all?
19:21
No, I don't remember much this morning
19:24
as we've learned here.
19:26
I don't know how to start
19:27
my own vehicle side.
19:28
I'm not sure what I'm going to do.
19:30
I vaguely do remember
19:31
and we get that question
19:32
where a lot of times
19:34
people come out and the windows are down
19:36
I didn't leave them down
19:37
and then you start to question yourself
19:38
like I am this morning.
19:42
as you're walking to the vehicle,
19:43
you could hold that lock button
19:44
and as you get to it,
19:45
it'll lower the windows down
19:46
which will kind of allow
19:47
that hot summer air
19:50
Kind of a comfort feature.
19:52
is if something goes wrong
19:54
or the transmitter,
19:56
sometimes the car can get confused
19:58
and put the windows down
19:59
which obviously you don't want
20:03
or something like that.
20:04
So if you're noticing something strange,
20:07
try the different fob,
20:09
get that particular key away
20:13
possibly replace the battery
20:15
All these simple things
20:16
we can do ourselves
20:17
aren't very costly at all
20:18
and might actually solve the problem.
20:20
If you continue to have
20:22
you should probably get it in
20:23
before we run into a situation
20:25
where it's late at night,
20:26
and somebody's running through your car
20:29
and inside the vehicle gets wet.
20:31
So if you have that,
20:34
if not get it in for some help.
20:37
We're going to take a break.
20:38
Have a look at that forecast
20:40
for the holiday weekend.
20:41
See what that's like.
20:43
for your car care question.
20:44
All you have to do is call or text
20:49
from Newstalk 830W CCO.
20:53
Good Saturday morning to you.
20:54
Welcome back to CCO's car care show.
20:56
We're here every Saturday.
20:57
Thanks to Nick Stoffel
20:58
from Lloyd's Automotive
20:59
helping us out here
21:01
every Saturday for so many years.
21:03
And Nick, I know our listeners
21:05
do appreciate that as I do as well.
21:08
to help some folks out here.
21:10
Let's get back to it.
21:11
Now, if you want to call
21:12
and chat with Nick,
21:13
or send a text 651-461-9226.
21:24
a rusted out dust shield
21:31
I think at that vintage
21:33
Obviously, we'd like to replace them
21:34
to keep things protected.
21:38
to get that disassembled
21:39
to get the new shield in there
21:41
might be quite time consuming.
21:43
And if that shield has rotted away,
21:46
we worry about the conditions
21:47
of everything else.
21:48
So you don't want to make
21:48
a bigger mess for ourselves.
21:50
I guess what I'm saying.
21:51
And it's important,
21:54
We like to keep that debris
21:55
and stuff away from those shields.
21:57
But we see them all the time.
21:58
They get to a 20-year-old vehicle.
22:00
has kind of taken course
22:02
and kind of made it
22:03
not very protected.
22:07
it's not a dangerous situation.
22:08
It's more of a to kind of keep things
22:09
from getting any debris
22:11
and that type of stuff.
22:12
So I would not replace it.
22:14
If you notice something going on,
22:16
have something take a look
22:17
to make sure there's not
22:18
something else wrong there.
22:20
will take care of any kind of noise.
22:23
Good morning, Texter says.
22:24
I want to buy a new smaller SUV.
22:26
But I say they all come
22:27
with 20-inch rims, wheels.
22:31
Can I buy a new one
22:33
and then put 18-inch wheels on that?
22:36
Or will that screw everything up?
22:38
Yeah, you don't want to change
22:41
the overall height of the tire.
22:44
well, if I can get an 18-inch wheel,
22:46
I can get a taller tire,
22:47
make up the difference.
22:49
But then you have the offset,
22:51
how the depth of the wheel
22:52
sits on the vehicle.
22:54
Then you worry about contact
22:55
with the steering components.
22:58
So it's a bit of a gamble.
23:00
You can check with the manufacturer.
23:03
If the dealership offers
23:04
a different tire wheel package,
23:06
what sometimes they do,
23:07
you might feel a change that.
23:09
But you can't change the height
23:10
because the transmission shifting,
23:13
the differential gear ratios
23:14
are all kind of based off
23:15
of that tire height.
23:16
So if you change it,
23:17
the speedometer is going to be off.
23:19
The shift points in the transmission
23:21
And it really shouldn't be done.
23:23
So I would pause before I would do that.
23:25
I would contact the dealership
23:26
if you're buying a new vehicle,
23:27
see if they have options
23:29
for a smaller setup for you.
23:32
I mean, from what I've seen,
23:34
you can find wheels that are 18-inch
23:39
You can, and a lot of times
23:40
the winter packages,
23:42
people on some of these vehicles
23:43
will swap out to a winter tire
23:45
and they have a tire wheel setup
23:46
where the wheel's a little bit smaller,
23:48
the tire's a little bit bigger,
23:49
but the overall size is the same.
23:51
And that's really critical
23:52
because you don't want to mess
23:53
with the transmission and such.
23:56
the other thing is,
23:58
I think it'll fit and you put it on
23:59
and then all of a sudden,
24:00
it's dragging against the brake caliper
24:02
or the tie rod end or something.
24:04
You don't want to have a problem
24:05
So it's a really tricky thing to navigate.
24:08
And if you don't have the right resources,
24:10
you might not have much success.
24:12
And then if you buy some tires
24:13
and wheels and you mount them,
24:17
a lot of money into something
24:18
that you can't use.
24:20
and make sure I did a lot of research.
24:23
How hard is it to change
24:25
a seatbelt timing module?
24:27
My seatbelt won't come out.
24:32
Well, it depends where it's located.
24:34
If it's in the B pillar there,
24:35
kind of right behind the driver's door,
24:38
there's some plastic in the way.
24:40
There might be an air bag.
24:41
So I would say the same thing.
24:45
If you have the right tools,
24:46
a lot of times these clips
24:48
might require a certain removal tool.
24:50
Don't go in there forcefully
24:51
and start breaking stuff
24:52
because then you have a panel
24:54
that won't reattach
24:55
or you have something that's rattling.
24:58
Understand you're trying
24:58
to maybe trying to save some money
24:59
in the replacement,
25:01
if you damage something,
25:03
you end up having to have somebody fix it
25:05
and you have to replace
25:06
some other parts they weren't counting on.
25:09
I'd be very careful.
25:10
Do a lot of research.
25:12
Follow the procedure.
25:13
Read the procedure.
25:14
oftentimes when you look
25:16
I'll tell you what tools are needed
25:17
or if there's any specialty tools.
25:19
So just read up on it.
25:21
Make sure you're prepared
25:21
before you dig into that
25:22
and take your time.
25:24
Don't rush through it
25:24
because seat belts,
25:25
we want them working properly.
25:27
So don't be in too much of a hurry.
25:30
we not only get good questions
25:32
we get good comments as well.
25:35
Texter says that had to step
25:36
on the brake a couple of times
25:37
to start their vehicle
25:40
commonly with push button start.
25:41
If the battery in your car is low,
25:45
you'll have to push the pedal
25:49
to get it started before.
25:51
I've never heard of that.
25:54
you have to hold the brake pedal
25:59
I'm going to keep picking
26:00
on myself the rest of the show
26:06
I don't know what depressing
26:07
the brake pedal harder does.
26:08
You know, if the battery is low on voltage,
26:10
it's going to be low on voltage.
26:11
If you're referring to the key fob,
26:13
a lot of times with the key fob,
26:15
it says no key found.
26:17
A lot of times you hold the key
26:18
closer to the push button
26:20
to kind of make that better connection.
26:21
You know, the transponder respond.
26:23
We put them next to each other.
26:24
It'll allow it to start that way.
26:27
But I don't think the brake pedal
26:29
has any control over the voltage
26:33
We have a couple of phone calls.
26:34
I don't want to leave them hanging.
26:35
So let's get to it.
26:36
Greg calling in from Crystal this morning.
26:39
What is your question?
26:41
Good morning, guys.
26:44
I'm not going to mention names,
26:46
but I have a friend of mine
26:47
who continually puts in heavier oil
26:54
And I've tried to tell him that
26:56
that's probably not a good thing.
26:57
So I thought I'd ask the professional.
27:01
Well, I would say you look in the owner's manual
27:05
and a lot of times it'll tell you
27:06
it recommended oil weight,
27:08
but then I'll talk about extreme use
27:10
for different climates.
27:10
And it might change one or two weight,
27:12
you know, meaning if it called for a 020,
27:14
it might say 520 or 016.
27:18
What I don't want to see,
27:19
I wouldn't recommend if it says
27:20
020 and you're running like 530.
27:23
Something much more of a change.
27:27
you know, if you look in the owner's manual,
27:28
it might have an option of one or two weights,
27:31
one way, you know, the one way or the other,
27:33
but to go a significantly different,
27:35
or if you go back old,
27:36
if you're old enough,
27:37
you can find it like 10W40 or something like that.
27:39
I definitely would not do
27:40
or a straight weight.
27:41
I mean, you know, these vehicles are designed,
27:42
the talentures are very tight.
27:44
So a heavier weight oil
27:45
might not be able to make its way through
27:47
and do as it should.
27:48
That's why they evolved the oil
27:50
and change it to the tolerances
27:51
and the emissions and the fuel economy
27:53
and all the things we have going with cars these days.
27:57
look at the owner's menu as we often say,
27:59
see what they recommend,
28:00
see what options are.
28:01
A lot of times there might be an option
28:02
for one weight or another,
28:03
or, you know, a synthetic or something else.
28:06
So just read up on it,
28:07
see what your vehicle calls for,
28:09
but I probably wouldn't go anything
28:10
out of that recommended area.
28:13
I think we have time for one more call.
28:14
Cheryl, calling in from Golden Valley.
28:16
Good morning, Cheryl.
28:17
What is your question?
28:19
I have a 2013 Kia Soul that has a key start
28:23
and a few times last winter and fall,
28:25
or, excuse me, last winter and spring.
28:28
Wednesday and Thursday mornings this week,
28:31
at the first start of the morning only,
28:34
the dashboard lights all come on as they should,
28:37
but there's absolutely no sound whatsoever.
28:39
I try turning it like this time,
28:42
it took four or five tries,
28:43
and then it starts just normally.
28:45
I took it in the following morning,
28:47
hoping it would happen for them at the garage,
28:50
So they still checked out
28:51
and found that my battery alternator
28:53
and starter voltages were fine.
28:55
The starter looked good to the eye.
28:58
They're suggesting maybe an ignition switch
29:01
I could try or something with my key.
29:04
Do you have any ideas for me?
29:08
These are the worst, most frustrating situations.
29:11
You know, the ignition switch,
29:12
the starter, the battery,
29:14
all those things are commonly issues
29:16
that create what you just had.
29:17
It wouldn't start out and went out there
29:19
and it tried and finally it started to rate up normally.
29:21
Bring it in the next day.
29:23
It doesn't happen for them.
29:24
I hate telling you this,
29:26
but we see that stuff way more often than we'd like.
29:31
the best advice is we got a couple of things
29:33
that I always talk about having a journal in the vehicle
29:35
and a few people do it,
29:36
but this situation is a perfect example of
29:39
if you can remember,
29:41
I didn't start this morning,
29:42
what was my last drive cycle yesterday?
29:44
You mentioned it was spring, winter,
29:47
then also now it's a little bit cooler now.
29:48
So how does temperature have an effect on this?
29:51
If they tested the battery,
29:52
and it's not that cold or a weak battery,
29:55
it's not to that time of the year.
29:56
But no, I start to wonder,
29:57
maybe something with the starter
29:58
with a little change in temperature,
29:59
maybe the contact points are getting warm,
30:01
maybe something, it's not happy there.
30:04
So unfortunately, there's not an easy button here.
30:07
Really what we need to do
30:07
is be able to duplicate your concern,
30:09
get the car where it's not starting.
30:10
At that point, I assure you
30:11
they could put a meter on there,
30:12
figure out where the voltage is
30:14
and isn't going and make a recommendation.
30:16
But the best thing you can do
30:17
is make notes when it happens,
30:19
temperature, last drive cycle,
30:20
anything that might help them
30:22
try to duplicate that and pinpoint it for you.
30:24
And I just hope that you're not in a hurry
30:27
It doesn't want to work for you.
30:29
You know, and unfortunately,
30:30
you have to be patient
30:31
and hopefully it'll act up at the right time
30:32
so you can get that resolved and fixed back up.
30:35
Nick, we're out of time.
30:36
I'm going to save the text.
30:37
There are good questions until next week,
30:40
and we'll open up the show
30:42
with those questions.
30:42
So I apologize to our listeners,
30:44
but we'll open up the show with those next week.
30:47
