On this week's episode, we're going to be chatting about the announcement

this morning from the government regarding a EV scrappage scheme,

giving you a grant of up to eight and a half thousand euros.

We also are looking at the May 2026 registration numbers

from the Society of the Irish Motor Industry, the SIMI.

Between last podcast and this podcast, we've had the release of the Ferrari Luce.

We're also going to be talking about the MG4 Urban, a couple of videos

up on the channel already, where we compare it with the original

and also driving an efficiency Tesla Day and Mondello.

Last Friday, we got a chance to take some performance versions

and the Cybertruck and the Model S Plaid,

the fastest production car in the world out around Mondello.

Also last week, we had the Compass launch from Jeep Ireland at Slain Castle

and we have a press release on the Verizon 7VE van,

all electric van launching in Ireland.

So a jam packed podcast this week.

and we'll be covering where we were this week, what we've been driving

and what we've been doing between the podcasts.

So let's get stuck in.

And this morning, I was on the way into work

and my Slack channel was buzzing away where the Irish Times piece

announcing the EV Scrapage Grant was live and hopping on the work channel.

So what is it? What do you need to know?

I'll put a link in the description, but it is a

EV Scrapage scheme that could put eight and a half thousand euros back in your pocket.

And when you trade in your old petrol or diesel car for a brand new electric.

So it's going to be introduced as a pilot basis from July

and it will run until a 10 million euro fund is exhausted.

So about 2000 vehicles, it operates on a first come, first serve basis.

So acting early is key.

If you're driving a petrol or diesel car that's 13 years old or older,

you could be eligible for 5000 euro Scrapage Grant

plus the existing three and a half thousand euros.

EV Purchase Grant, combining, giving you a total saving of eight and a half

thousand off the cost of a new electric vehicle.

The scheme is open for all owners of petrol or diesel vehicle age,

13 years or older, notably 65 percent of the fund or six and a half million euros

has been ring fenced for more rural areas, reflecting the greater dependency

on private cars outside of Ireland's major cities.

The remaining 35 percent, approximately 3.5 million,

will be available to residents in Dublin, Cork, Goaway, Limerick and Waterford.

Alongside the Scrapage scheme, the existing three and a half thousand euro

EV Grant has also been updated from July 31st.

The price cap of an eligible vehicle will drop from 60000 euros

down to 50000 euros with a clear focus on encouraging buyers

towards smaller, more affordable models to keep pace with this growing demand.

EV sales are up 50 percent on last year and an additional 13 million euros

has been injected into the existing grant scheme to ensure funding doesn't run out.

Ireland is well ahead of schedule on its EV targets,

having reached 195,000 electric vehicles in the road two months ahead of plan

with EV sales continuing to surge, driven by more affordable models,

entering the market and rising petrol and diesel cost momentum

is fairly behind the switch to electric between the new Scrapage scheme,

the updated EV grant and ever growing range of affordable electric vehicles.

So that was the announcement this morning.

There were a couple of videos up.

I did two radio interviews today, one with KCLR down in Kilkenny

and also another one with Newstalk and I'm back on the radio tomorrow morning.

So lots of interest and lots of people wanting to find out more.

Speaking of the update and the what's happening with regards to the registration numbers.

So we have the May 2026 numbers from the SIMI, the Society for the Irish Motor Industry.

EVs up 115% versus May of 2025.

PHEVs down versus May 25, 6%.

Petrol sales up 19% surprisingly on May of last year.

Diesel sales down 3%.

Electric was the most popular fuel type registered in May ahead of pure petrol,

diesel, hybrid and plug-in hybrid.

Over 42% of cars registered in May had a plug socket on them

with nearly one in three cars being fully electric.

The models that made up the top five for May 2026 are as follows.

In first place, you have the Volkswagen ID4.

Second place goes to the Tesla Model 3.

Third place went to the Toyota BZ.

Fourth and fifth place both went to Škoda.

Somebody was giving me a bit of abuse about how I say Škoda.

Oh, I know who it was.

It was Vicki Riley in BYD Ireland, Škoda.

So Škoda makes up fourth with the LROC and fifth with the ENYAC.

So congratulations to Škoda making two of the top five

and Volkswagen Group Ireland making three of the top five.

With regards to what's happening so far this year,

we are EVs the second most popular fuel type.

So so far this year, we've had 19,000 electric vehicles sold.

And in electric only, all the total of, can you see the figure now?

So far this year, we have registered 83,000 vehicles in total.

Toyota, the best seller of Volkswagen overall,

but in electric vehicle terms, Volkswagen are the number one EV brand.

Just overtaken Hyundai this month in 2026.

A huge number of Volkswagen IDFORs and 23 percent of the market share

over 19,000 EV sold in 20, a registratory in 2026.

So my numbers, the SIMI numbers are always great to see what's happening

in the world of vehicle registrations here in Ireland.

And that plus the EV grant just shows you the kind of momentum

that's really kicking in behind electric vehicles.

And somebody was asking me about is it everybody going to be buying

really old cars on certain car platforms?

And that's not going to be the case.

The stipulation is it has to be registered in your name for the last year.

So before everybody runs out buying cheap petrol and diesel cars,

13 years old and older, the car has to be in your name in the last year.

So that is the SIMI May 2026 stats.

The Ferrari Luce, Luce stands for light, was announced and revealed last week.

And it is it is controversial.

That's for sure on the website.

Uncompromising performance, engagement and spaciousness.

Made in Maranello, engineered, developed and manufactured in Maranello,

the home of Ferrari expertise and excellence.

The electric power source for our engineered engines, advanced drivetrain,

affords a radically new architecture and uniquely combines extraordinary

for very performance with the luxury of spaciousness.

Designed with Sir Johnny Ives and Mark Newsom, the creative collective from love

from a singular design language, unites the exterior, interior and the interface

with clarity and refined simplicity throughout.

I saw this instead of the Ferrari logos that we saw it with some Apple logos on it.

And yeah, could have been the Apple iCare Project Titan.

Interior forms are simplified, rationalised and serviced of the driving experience.

So it's an all wheel drive vehicle, four doors, five seat configuration,

create the most spacious and versatile Ferrari ever without compromising performance.

Interior is a celebration of hundreds of discrete products.

It is meticulously considered and treated with individual care.

Together, they create a single, clean volume with forms simplified and

rationalised in service of the driving experience.

Since seeing it last week, it is growing on me.

It is getting a lot of comparison with the Nissan Leaf, with the Ford Multipla.

It is not getting a lot of love from motorheads.

But you know what, fair play to Ferrari.

They said, you know, we're going to do an electric Ferrari, make it totally different.

And they have done that prices of around between five and 600000 euros.

The interior designed to be engineered to be functional, intuitive and thrilling to drive.

So lots of clicky buttons.

We saw the interior couple of months ago with the announcement from San Francisco

in that partnership with Love From.

It is deeply engaging tactile controls employ the best characteristics of physical

and digital, combining beautiful mechanical buttons, switches, dials and multi function

digital displays.

So the aerodynamics as well.

It's got a lowest track coefficient of an in Ferrari history achieved through

aerostyling convergence, active air shutters, the right height logic that lowers

the front by 10 millimetres, even when you're just cruising.

The preoccupation with aerodynamics shaped the fundamental architecture of the entire

care. It is very aero, very slippery.

Surfaces have been refined to a smooth, continuous and to be smooth, continuous

and uninterrupted, the rear tail light is part of a black lens.

And it gently recedes when it's switched off.

It is all about the purity of form.

The vehicle dynamics is the most supposedly comfortable for our yet.

It has dedicated noise, vibration and harshness solutions deliver electric

care refinement while preserving Ferrari road handling, advanced dynamic management,

new regeneration, torque management systems, total engagement and repeatability

in every driving situation.

The sound is also all about engagement.

So you do have the sound activates to inform torque shifting in manual and

performance modes, manual hand manual torque shifting enables driver to build

progression via paddles, sustaining involvement and control across acceleration

and deceleration.

The sound waves are captured from an

electromechanical vibration in the axles that are that was equalized,

amplified and delivered alongside visual feedback to inform the driver.

You get an app as you can imagine and you can control climate charging settings.

And it also displays the status of the car.

It is a new design language for Ferrari.

There have been thousands of deeply considered details to unite and create a

single driving experience.

Yeah, listen, it is.

It is going to be something that is a talking point.

And if you wanted a car to create a stir, it is definitely been that one.

It has bespoke technical platform with innovation in every component.

So, yeah, looking forward to at some stage driving the Ferrari lucha

fingers crossed, we'll get it up on the channel and.

But one car we did get up on the channel that we'd be selling a lot more volume

in Ireland is the MG for Urban.

And so a couple of videos up on the MG for Urban.

Originally, I got a chance to look at this over at the UK launch.

And we have a video now up in the channel where we're comparing it.

Second video on the MG for Urban to the MG for OG, the one that we actually have

a long term loan here in our house from MG Ireland.

And so there is the MG versus the MG for Urban.

You can have a look to see it's gone from rear wheel drive to front wheel drive.

And rear leg room, phenomenal rear headroom, phenomenal.

And then some cars, when they're doing rear space, they prioritise

out of the boot over the leg room of the rear or vice versa.

They give you a lot of rear leg room and the boot is suffering because of that.

It's not the case with the MG for Urban.

You do have a torsion beam suspension, so large sub well, big bush, great space in

the rear and that just extra bit of height versus the original MG for now.

Don't get me wrong, I still like the styling of the MG for original OG.

And we don't know whether we're going to get that in Ireland.

You do get it in the United Kingdom and other markets like Australia.
