00:00
This is the Tire Kickers, classic car chat with Max and Matt.
00:10
Welcome to a Tire Kickers special edition. It's the ultimate shootout. It's the Mercedes-Sel
00:16
versus the Triumph Stag. Why? Well, I've got a Mercedes-Sel. And I've just got a Triumph
00:22
Stag and I've been kicking the tires on Max's just to see if they'll fall off. But it's
00:25
Mercedes quality versus British Leyland quality, and that's going to be the test. But it's also
00:31
to get a feel of the cars, isn't it? A look at the cars. These were competitors back in
00:35
the 70s weren't they, Max? For very different money, we're going to try and suss out which
00:38
is best or whether they've both got their own qualities.
00:41
It's Coventry versus Stuttgart in the ultimate battle of roadsters.
00:46
Now, if you could have thought about that, this was actually the Stag was half built
00:49
in Liverpool, so it's Scouse versus Stuttgart. That's what it is.
00:55
So, look, how are we going to work this out, Max? What's the criteria?
01:05
This is a proper magazine-style road test. We're going to have lots and lots of different
01:09
tests. I mean, at the end we'll do a proper road test. Well, I'll drive yours and you
01:13
drive mine. But in between, let's do it other various quality tests. Let's see how
01:17
quickly, for example, we could put up the roof if it was raining. Let's see what
01:22
they sound like with the doors and the shutting of the boot and the bonnet. And
01:26
also, let's look at the stats. Let's do a top trumps of the two cars.
01:30
Starting with quality is not going to be my strong point.
01:32
Well, you've got here and it's not overheated yet, so that's a start.
01:39
Right, let's start with first impressions. I've just seen your Stag for
01:43
the first time and I'm very impressed with it because I do love the look of
01:47
a Stag. There's some things I've noticed. You haven't got the BL badges
01:50
on the flanks. Are you a bit embarrassed about it being a British Island car?
01:57
De-be-el-ed it. No, they weren't on it and I think it's been re-sprayed. Obviously,
02:00
I know it's been re-sprayed at least once, so I think they get lost, don't they,
02:03
in the things of time. But looking at the cars, so we've got Max's Red,
02:08
1980s, obviously one of the last of the productions of the 107s and the
02:12
My Stag, which is a late 70s, which is one of the last of the productions
02:15
of the Stags. Mine's a 78. It stopped making in 77. So these cars are
02:20
both a sort of end of life in terms of that. So they should be the best
02:24
that the cars offer. They should be. But also, I think it's important to stress
02:29
that the one on the left, which is yours, the red SL, it was, like for like,
02:35
twice the price of my brown Stag. You know, these were list price.
02:39
The Stag was, I think, 2000 and the early 70s yours was £4,000.
02:43
It was the price for two-bedroom house, so it better be good.
02:46
Quality costs, as we'll find out later. But let's just have a look at
02:50
your Stag, actually, because it is a really, really nice design.
02:54
Now, this was designed to actually compete against the Pagoda SL, not
02:57
particularly the R107. But it is a beautiful looking car.
03:00
This is a Mark II, so it's got the Mark II alloys, non-factory
03:05
colour, as I've banged on before, gold coat stripes down the side.
03:08
It's a very interesting looking design, isn't it? Because actually,
03:12
if you look at it in squint, it could be an SL. The designs are
03:15
remarkably similar. Yeah, it's interesting you say that they were
03:19
going after the Pagoda, the model before yours. But essentially,
03:22
if you put these two cars together, they are very, very similar, as
03:25
you say. It looks like they were nicking the ideas of this.
03:27
And when we come to stuff like the hoods and stuff, they're
03:29
very similar designs. So it was going for the market.
03:32
Look, the Stag was geared at America, as was obviously the
03:36
107. And this was designed, that's why it's got the V8 in it.
03:39
That's why it was designed for the States with luxury in
03:42
mind. Electric windows, power steering, adjustable steering column
03:46
in 1970. You know, that was that was unheard of for, certainly
03:50
for a British car. So I think when you get close to the cars,
03:54
this is where you start seeing the difference in quality. I think
03:56
the BL stuff is kind of a little bit more flaky looking than
04:00
your stuff. Your stuff, your chrome looks a lot more solid,
04:02
doesn't it? Any other first impressions you think?
04:05
I think the thing about the Stag is it's actually quite
04:07
small, isn't it? The headlights, for example, the
04:09
grille, the rear lights, it's all quite a small car.
04:13
I showed it to a mate, actually, and he said, Oh, wow, it's
04:15
went in real life. It's much smaller than I thought it looked
04:17
like bigger in the photo. It's quite a long car. If you come
04:20
around the back, the rear three quarters, it's kind of it's
04:25
like a third, a third and a third, isn't it? It's you
04:27
forget how small the Stag is. I mean, I'd say the driving
04:31
position for me is a six footer. It's a bit like sitting on a
04:34
ride on lawnmower. It's got that feel and everything feels
04:37
slightly descaled inside scaled down. But I think it's a
04:40
good looking car, isn't it? I tell you what it is. It's a 1970s
04:44
car. It reeks of 1970s because it's kind of hairy chested,
04:49
isn't it? I've said that before about it, but it's it's
04:51
quite a butch car. Do you think it's butch? I'm not sure if
04:54
it's butch. I don't know. It certainly reeks the 70s. You
04:58
know, there's vinyl and petrol that you can smell and
05:01
cheap wood. It's a funny looking car because it
05:03
driving it as you'll find out later, it does have that
05:07
sort of mini muscle car feel about it, but it's
05:09
very, very scaled down. Whereas when we look at yours, I
05:13
always forget how actually quite big the SLs are. You know,
05:16
certainly when you look at these two together, my car's
05:19
probably 25% smaller than yours, isn't it? It's a bit
05:22
wider. The doors are thicker. It's just a bit
05:25
brawnier. It's kind of like it's slightly more pumped
05:28
up. It's it is a lot like a German tank. You know,
05:30
they nicknamed the tank the Panzerweger. It is a bit
05:33
tank like it's quite solid and there's nothing
05:36
really delicate about the lines. It's a slab of
05:39
metal. Let's look at the size because obviously the
05:41
size of the cars is different. But what about inside
05:44
because, OK, so the cabin size, you've got a large void
05:47
behind the seats, which you can put bags in. And then
05:50
you've got the seats, which I've always had a problem
05:52
sitting in. We'll get into that in a minute. But
05:53
actually it looks quite big compared to mine. You
05:55
come over to the stag now, which is a full
05:57
seated, by the way, because mine's only a two
05:59
seat. So actually in a smaller car, you've got
06:01
two extra seats. Yeah, it's actually about the
06:03
same, isn't it? The seats in yours are a bit
06:05
more British. I've got great big fact German
06:07
back sides on mine. That's what it's designed for.
06:09
It's a big German businessman to go down a motorway.
06:12
Like for like, I mean, obviously a lot of S.L.s have
06:14
got the seats in the back, haven't they? But the
06:16
seats are not pretty useless, although I did put
06:18
my 15 year old son in here and he was quite
06:20
comfortable, actually. So usability probably
06:23
about the same, I would say. And yours has got
06:25
a kind of, what colour do you call that? I
06:26
hesitate to call it beige. It's more kind of
06:28
tan like, isn't it? It's almost kind of like
06:30
a cigar interior. Yeah, it's like a tan. It's
06:32
like a tan. If you bought like light tan shoes,
06:35
that's what they'd look like if they were
06:36
made out of vinyl from Coventry in the 70s.
06:39
And you've got obviously the teatop, which is
06:41
the big design difference between these two.
06:44
And having tooled round in yours this morning
06:46
as a passenger, it doesn't really have any
06:48
scuttle check. That teatop does work.
06:50
No, but it is ugly, isn't it? I don't think...
06:51
Yeah, it is. Yeah, I don't think it's the prettiest thing.
06:54
I mean, you don't notice it so much when
06:55
you're in the car, actually. Because obviously
06:57
you're sat looking forward. You don't notice
06:58
the teatop. It's quite good to hang on
07:00
round corners if you're going fast.
07:02
But I don't think it's a design thing.
07:05
It's particularly good. But it does make it unique, I suppose.
07:08
And there is a very British bolt-on show here,
07:10
which is just a fantastic bit of BL work, isn't it?
07:13
In the teatop, there's a big bolt-on show.
07:15
I mean, in a German car, that just doesn't really happen.
07:18
They've kind of engineered it all out.
07:20
But that's a very British solution.
07:22
But also a lack of thought as well.
07:24
I mean, there's certainly... Look, there's holes here.
07:26
So where does roof has gone down?
07:28
And it's inside the cubby bin here.
07:31
You know, they've left stuff on show,
07:34
the bit where the hardtop goes.
07:35
And so there's a hole here, a hole there,
07:37
a hole over there and a hole over there.
07:39
And your eye is drawn to the massive, great hole
07:41
where the roof mechanism is.
07:44
You can actually buy a little plug to go in there,
07:46
which takes your eye away from it.
07:47
But yeah, I mean, the quality's not bad.
07:49
If we get into the quality, the door chunk
07:51
we should do the teatop, shouldn't we?
07:53
Have a listen to this.
07:55
Yeah, well, let's have a listen to yours then.
07:57
Move over to mine. Right, so we've got ESL now.
08:02
I think that's quite a lot.
08:03
Go on, do it again.
08:07
That's quite a thunk.
08:10
Telling about the quality again,
08:11
I mean, you've got holes here where they've not covered them up.
08:13
Yeah, but it's got nice chrome.
08:14
The difference is, I think,
08:16
and this is a typically British car problem,
08:18
particularly from the 1960s and 1970s.
08:20
They never really finished it.
08:22
They put out a car that was 90% finished
08:25
and let the customers do the finishing
08:27
of the design and stuff.
08:28
And this is a Mark II stag.
08:30
So like you said at the beginning,
08:31
this is the end of the production.
08:32
But they still, during the production,
08:34
they didn't do many tweaks to kind of finish the car.
08:38
And I think that's one of the things that's noticeable
08:40
is the bolts are on show,
08:42
particularly on the dashboard, the screws are on show.
08:45
It's got that British quality,
08:47
which is it's been rushed out of the factory.
08:49
Well, yeah, and that's one of the things,
08:50
one of the reasons I didn't buy a stag for so long
08:53
was because the quality is a bit there.
08:56
The only benefit to that is, I mean,
08:57
like for example, in this one,
08:59
the clock doesn't work
09:00
because they don't in many classic cars.
09:01
But there's four screws on show
09:03
that I can get that dashboard out and fix it.
09:04
Whereas on yours, let's have a look, you know.
09:06
The clock does work though.
09:07
So I don't need to unscrew it.
09:08
That's the problem.
09:09
You try taking that console out without getting a bill.
09:12
You know, that's that center dashboard console
09:14
is going to be more complicated.
09:16
But I think the quality hands down
09:18
in the SL looks better.
09:20
What else do we test?
09:23
Let's put my boot up and then drop it.
09:25
So we're on the SL.
09:28
I think you might win.
09:29
You have got the keys, haven't you?
09:33
Right, let's walk over to the stag.
09:35
Let's walk over to the stag.
09:36
It's got a German chunk here.
09:39
It's not bad, one more.
09:42
It's not bad, actually.
09:42
It's a lot lighter, isn't it?
09:44
It's better than an alpha, put it that way.
09:47
You don't have that sort of,
09:48
bing, come around to your SL again.
09:52
Open the driver's door.
09:54
Yeah, look, immediately you're seeing
09:56
on the side of the seats here,
09:58
it's all chromed out.
09:59
And the first impression,
10:01
and I think it's really important
10:02
when you open a driver's door,
10:04
that first impression is really important.
10:05
I think first impressions, obviously,
10:07
it's much, much better here.
10:08
Very, very similar design cues, though.
10:10
Look at the chrome on the top of the windscreen.
10:13
It's the same on both.
10:14
I tell you what I noticed about this car
10:15
when I first bought it,
10:16
and if you just leave that door open,
10:18
I'm just going to kneel down to it
10:20
and tap the piece of metal on the edge.
10:23
It's a solid chunk of metal that's involved in these.
10:26
You know what that knock is?
10:27
That's a large repair bill for anything on this car.
10:30
That's a mechanic knocking.
10:31
That's kind of like, oh, I've got that on mine.
10:39
Don't shut that then.
10:41
The attention to detail in the SL is so much better.
10:44
You know, I'm talking about the Staggers in 90% car.
10:47
It came out of the factory, fully finished.
10:50
Yeah, I'd agree with that.
10:51
I mean, I think the reason I bought a Stag is I bought the engine.
10:54
I want to have that V8 for a couple of years and enjoy that.
10:58
The rest is sort of so-so.
11:00
It's like the old joke with alphas.
11:01
You know, you buy the engine, you get the rest chopped in for nothing.
11:03
But it is, I agree with you.
11:05
It's a bit unfinished.
11:06
But bear in mind, when the Stag was built,
11:08
it was in the middle of industrial action.
11:10
It was British Leyland infighting.
11:12
You know, they made the body in Liverpool.
11:14
They shipped it to Coventry to get put together.
11:17
And in between that, they're on strike.
11:19
You know, so it never was finished
11:21
because they never finished a shift.
11:22
So things did get there.
11:25
You know, it's just a collection of terrible ideas.
11:29
Who makes a car in two separate locations?
11:31
Well, the Italians did it quite largely.
11:32
But in Britain, it's a rubbish idea
11:35
because we don't have good weather.
11:36
So, you know, a lot of these cars did rust
11:38
because the body was sat on a car transporter
11:41
going down the, you know, the M6.
11:43
The quality isn't there.
11:45
You know, if you start poking around, it's not there.
11:46
But sometimes the hole is greater
11:48
than the sum of its parts, Max.
11:50
So we'll see on the test drive,
11:51
which brings more of a smile to your face.
11:58
So here are the figures.
12:00
The figures will tell this story, I think.
12:02
Let's compare top trumps between the SL and the Stag.
12:06
So, first of all, your top speed is...
12:08
Drive Stag, 118 miles an hour.
12:10
Your top speed, Mercedes 300 SL, is...
12:13
121 to 126 miles an hour.
12:15
I don't know why there's a five-mile-an-hour gap,
12:17
but it's slightly fast.
12:18
I mean, not significantly, but slightly, isn't it?
12:20
It depends how fat you are,
12:21
because the Germans would be fatter, I suppose,
12:22
so it's slower. Right, on to the next one.
12:24
0 to 60. The Stag is claiming 9.5.
12:27
It was actually about 10.5, 10.7 when tested.
12:30
The SL is 9.1 to 9.6 seconds.
12:33
That's not much in it, is it?
12:36
Economy, oh, dear, whoops.
12:37
Right, I could do this in reverse order.
12:39
Tell me your economy first for the Mercedes.
12:41
Claim between 23 and 30.
12:44
That's combined an extra urban.
12:47
Owners often see 20 to 26.
12:49
We'll put it this way.
12:50
The guy in the petrol station this morning
12:52
offered me a loyalty card.
12:53
So it literally can see the gauge going down
12:56
in the Stag as you drive it.
12:57
I've got the automatic.
12:58
It's probably doing about 18 to the gallon.
13:00
Yeah, you haven't seen 20 yet, have you?
13:03
Now, I've got a feeling I may lose this.
13:05
Your curb weight is?
13:07
Between 1250 and 1275,
13:09
and that's the difference between the brochure and the guide.
13:12
And the fat SL is between 1510 and 1540 kilograms.
13:16
That is, you know, 1,500 kilograms.
13:18
It is a big, heavy car.
13:22
Mine of its Lee is the original three-litre Triumph V8.
13:27
Mine is the three-litre inline-six, the M103.
13:30
That's 188 horsepower.
13:32
Yeah, you're 10 years younger, though.
13:33
So they had, you know, they had time to put some extra horses in.
13:36
But then if it's the V8, it's still going to be more.
13:38
The 500 V8 is a bigger engine.
13:41
Yeah, well, let's get on to talk later on.
13:43
Gearbox in the Stag it came with a four-speed manual
13:45
and overdrive or the three-speed Borg-Warner Auto,
13:49
which I've got in mine.
13:51
Yeah, and I've got the four-speed auto.
13:52
So I don't think the autos are really that different.
13:55
There's not much between them.
13:56
So they're quite evenly matched as cars, aren't they, really?
13:59
Yeah, I mean, top speed 0 to 60.
14:00
You're not going to notice the difference.
14:02
You do notice the difference with the weight.
14:03
I mean, just being in your car this morning,
14:05
it does feel a slightly more nimble car, to be honest.
14:08
And I was following you here to our location.
14:10
And yours is kind of like going around the corners pretty quickly.
14:13
And mine is a bit more ponderous.
14:15
It's a big, heavy car.
14:16
You do feel that in the quality,
14:18
but that does mean you do feel it in the handling as well.
14:21
Yeah, it's not a sports car.
14:22
Neither of these cars aren't sports cars.
14:24
You sit in a sort of sporty position,
14:25
but they're not sports cars.
14:26
They're Grand Tourers, both of them.
14:28
Mine, with a heavy right foot, it comes to life a bit more.
14:33
Yours, looking in my rear view mirror on the way here,
14:35
I thought it was like driving Miss Daisy on the way up.
14:37
Very slow, but I think when you get an SL,
14:39
you slow down in life, don't you?
14:40
No, they're both very ponderous cars,
14:43
but under load, both will liven up, won't they?
14:45
It's interesting about this SL.
14:46
It's not a car you can position with accuracy on the corners.
14:50
It's slow, it's ponderous.
14:51
The steering doesn't particularly feel that accurate.
14:54
It doesn't really encourage a sporty drive in SL.
14:57
It's a relaxed cruiser.
14:59
And I suppose that's maybe slightly the difference,
15:02
I think the Stag, interestingly,
15:03
is a bit more of a sports car.
15:05
Yeah, I think when we get onto the drive,
15:06
we'll kind of feel that.
15:07
But I'll tell you what we should do next,
15:08
is we should start them up and see what they sound like.
15:10
Okay, time for the startup test.
15:12
I have a feeling you may win.
15:16
Right, that creek you could hear
15:17
is Matt just getting into his British Leyland seat,
15:20
giving off all that aura of quality.
15:22
Right, I'm going to walk round
15:23
and crouch down at the back of the Stag.
15:26
It's got two massive exhausts.
15:28
It looks like two 10-pound guns, to be honest.
15:30
So I'm just going to point the microphone
15:32
at the back of the exhaust and get it fired up.
15:35
Vroom, vroom, vroom, vroom, vroom, vroom, vroom, vroom, vroom.
15:46
Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
15:49
All right, let's start your German taxi up,
15:51
see what it sounds like.
15:52
Right, Max is in position in his German cruiser.
16:06
Actually, that sounds surprisingly sporty.
16:09
Yeah, I mean, it definitely sounds like an inline six.
16:12
It's got to kind of rasp to it,
16:13
but your V8 Berbal just wins hands down.
16:16
So that's 1-0 to the Stag.
16:17
Actually, no, it's about 5-1 to the Merc, isn't it?
16:20
I'm afraid German is up quite a few goals at this point.
16:23
So the Stag wins on the exhaust note.
16:26
I've got the perfect test for Britain.
16:28
Yours is a British car.
16:29
In Britain, it rains a lot.
16:30
Let's see how quickly we can get the roofs up
16:37
So let's start with Max's SL.
16:39
You're sort of limbering up, you've stripped off,
16:41
you've got lightweight, taking your body warmer off.
16:43
Yeah, I'm going to do all my exercises
16:45
because I reckon this is going to be a championship-winning time.
16:47
This is quite good, this roof.
16:49
I'm quite impressed with it.
16:50
So have you got a clock on this?
16:51
Have you got a second clock on this?
16:52
Yeah, let me get my phone out
16:54
so we need some sort of stopwatch thing going on, don't we?
17:01
So I'm going to be standing at the back
17:02
and I'm going to run round, open the glove box,
17:04
get the bits out, pull the roof up and get it done.
17:07
Let's just get the stopwatch ready.
17:09
Three, two, one, go.
17:14
Okay, so he's going into the front of the car now
17:18
I think he's got two sort of metal levers
17:21
which he's got out now.
17:22
He's opening, going to sit up, got out the car.
17:24
He's opening the tonneau cover.
17:26
Inside is the hood there.
17:27
And that's coming up.
17:29
So it's a big thick thing.
17:30
He's back inside the car now.
17:32
This is what takes ages is getting these things lined up.
17:35
So once they have to be lined up like that,
17:38
pull it down, get your little tool out.
17:41
I can see two tools from where I'm sitting.
17:47
So he's adjusting both, both, yeah,
17:48
tightening both of the front of the hoods up.
17:50
So we come back, the tonneau boot is still up.
17:52
So the tonneau cover's going down.
17:55
You have a good old thump.
17:56
And then pushing the thing down at the back to the roof.
18:04
So that's 51 seconds.
18:05
That's quite good, isn't it?
18:06
I'm quite impressed.
18:07
Yeah, there's a couple of bits that I'm going to suffer on
18:09
because when I go to push the soft top in at the back,
18:11
it doesn't go a lot of the time.
18:14
So I might have to have special dispensation for that.
18:16
Let's try the stag.
18:18
Matt isn't limbering up,
18:19
but have you done this before?
18:20
You've actually put the soft top up?
18:22
Yeah, I have put the soft top.
18:23
I keep the soft top down to be honest,
18:25
even in the garage.
18:26
But I do know how to do it.
18:27
I'm not sure that it's going to be as clean and German
18:29
and as efficient as yours,
18:30
but we'll give it a go.
18:32
Do it in three, two, one, go.
18:35
So he is going in through the passenger door.
18:37
He is pulling the tonneau cover up.
18:40
The roof comes out pretty easily, actually.
18:45
Oh, does that all right?
18:49
It takes a bit of manhandling that, doesn't it?
18:51
I've got the things built in.
18:53
I've got the lever things,
18:56
but they're not particularly good because you have to
18:58
you have to look visually.
19:01
Oh, God, that's not right.
19:03
I need to go around the other side.
19:04
Go around the other side.
19:06
So the prongs basically have to go
19:08
into the front of the windscreen.
19:09
Yeah, they have to be lined up.
19:10
The prongs are proud.
19:12
So you have to line them up properly.
19:13
So this one, oh, that's round the wrong way now.
19:20
That's the driver's side in.
19:21
Let's go around the passenger side.
19:23
The lever just needs to be turned.
19:26
So you see it's a little bit, it's,
19:36
Now I'm putting the tonneau cover down like yours.
19:38
And then this, I've got to release the catch here.
19:39
Oh, and around the other side.
19:40
Oh, there's a little fiddly catch.
19:41
You have to go around twice.
19:44
So all the way around the car.
19:48
Do you have any push?
19:53
That was one minute, 24 seconds.
19:54
And it's not, it's not secure, is it?
19:56
No, it's this, this little pin that goes in the back is not quite in it.
19:59
And I think you have to unzip the window and stand on it basically.
20:02
Is that a spring loaded pin at the back?
20:04
I think it might be.
20:06
I might have to have done it slightly the wrong way around.
20:07
I don't know, but it's, it's a bit more of a faff.
20:09
The end result when done is kind of similar.
20:12
The idea is the same, isn't it?
20:14
It's just like the British kind of cars.
20:16
It's just the execution.
20:17
It's just, and as you see, it didn't really come out the bin that cleanly.
20:21
But yeah, it's kind of, oh that was a bit fallen off there.
20:25
Oh dear, don't mind.
20:28
Do you want to sit down?
20:29
Do you want an ambulance?
20:30
Yeah, I'll put you a bit out of breath actually.
20:32
I'll have to do that.
20:33
But you see what I had to do though, I had to run around the car a couple of times.
20:37
But it's all relative max, because in my old car, in the sixties car, that would
20:42
No, but it's relative to the car that we're testing against, which is the SL.
20:45
Which is what, 51 seconds?
20:46
Oh, it's the clock still running.
20:48
It's still at 2 minutes 26 now.
20:50
So that's a win for the SL.
20:55
Right, road test time.
20:57
It's max going first.
20:58
He's going to drive the stag.
21:02
He's just walking up.
21:03
He's going to get in the car.
21:06
That indicators from a Sherpa.
21:08
Oh, you've got to be gentle with the indicators.
21:10
We need to give each other a bit of basic info.
21:13
For we start driving.
21:14
Be careful of the indicators.
21:15
They will come off in your hand if you're not careful.
21:17
When you put it into gear, it kind of lurches.
21:19
Otherwise, you're pretty.
21:20
He's trying to adjust the seat now.
21:22
This is just so BL.
21:23
I can recognize so many BL things about it.
21:25
If only you'd had those BL badges on the flanks like it should do.
21:28
Yeah, so it's very, very British.
21:30
The interior, I'm not a fan of the interior.
21:32
I just shut my door.
21:34
Do you want to fire up?
21:35
Now, the other thing I need to tell you is for some reason in this car,
21:38
the key works backwards.
21:39
So you turn the key towards you to start.
21:41
See, I quite like this interior.
21:42
You don't like stag interiors.
21:44
It's got that great kind of like multifunction gauge
21:47
that lights up with different problems.
21:49
It's probably quite important in this car.
21:51
But actually, I think it's a kind of like a light, spacious interior.
21:54
Now, my interior, the merc interiors,
21:56
particularly are always quite dark.
21:59
This is nice and bright.
22:00
That V8 purple is great, isn't it?
22:02
So it's three shunts,
22:04
and you'll feel it lurching to drive.
22:06
It should be in part,
22:07
but it's indicating it's in the middle.
22:09
It should be in part,
22:10
but it's indicating it's in reverse for some reason.
22:12
But it's in park, isn't it?
22:20
You see, automatically,
22:22
even within like three or four yards,
22:24
the steering is a lot lighter,
22:26
and it feels more nimble.
22:28
This is a more nimble car than an SL.
22:31
Brakes are nice and heavy.
22:33
You get a nice response from the engine when you're revving.
22:35
And this is just like ticking over now
22:37
just 15, 20 miles an hour.
22:39
And it's a lovely, lovely smooth engine.
22:41
All right, let's use this Sherpa indicator.
22:45
I recognize that sound.
22:47
Oh, that V8, that is nice.
22:49
So you get a little shunt in the gearbox as you do it,
22:51
and under lighter load,
22:54
you notice more of a shunt under heavy load.
22:56
You don't notice it so much.
22:57
We're going right here.
22:58
So I'm doing a driving test.
23:00
You need some lessons.
23:02
I bet you haven't had somebody this talented
23:04
in the car for a while.
23:06
So we're on a long straight road now.
23:08
Give it some beans if you want.
23:15
Oh, there's the gear change.
23:18
So really it doesn't change gear that much, does it,
23:22
But it picks up all right, doesn't it?
23:24
Do you notice the bonnet lift as you put your foot down?
23:26
I do, and I notice it's just a lot lighter car.
23:28
You can feel a lack of weight compared to mine.
23:30
It's a lot lighter.
23:32
We didn't shut that tonneau cover properly.
23:34
Squeaking in the background.
23:36
We're going to listen to this.
23:37
Right, coming up to a roundabout.
23:39
We're going to go left here.
23:41
Oh, there's a Ferrari 360 Spider coming past.
23:47
Shunting into seconds.
23:51
See, lovely light steering.
23:52
This is just really, really nice.
23:55
It does remind me of a lot.
23:56
Follow the Ferrari.
23:57
Three-hour sports cars right now.
23:58
We won't keep up with it.
24:05
Once you're into that top gear,
24:07
it's lovely and smooth.
24:08
There's plenty of torque to it.
24:09
You get a really nice view out of the bonnet
24:11
that rises and falls every time you accelerate and brake.
24:14
It's got that 1970s feel.
24:16
It just feels like a proper 70s sports car.
24:21
That's 3,000 revs and 60 miles an hour.
24:25
I mean, it is a nice engine.
24:27
I know these engines have a reputation for being troublesome,
24:30
but it is a beautifully smooth VA.
24:34
It's got that sort of mini muscle car feel, isn't it?
24:38
I mean, it does feel.
24:39
It sounds American.
24:40
The steering's a lot lighter than American muscle cars,
24:42
but the engine has got that muscle car feel.
24:45
Let's just pull here to a roundabout.
24:50
Climbing 2,000, 2,500, 3,000 rpm, 40 miles an hour.
24:56
There's the change.
24:57
Back down to 2,500 revs, 50 miles an hour.
25:02
Yeah, this is actually really, really nice.
25:05
I used to drive a lot of stags,
25:06
and I remember them quite well,
25:07
and this is bringing back the memories of the good ones
25:10
and not the bad ones.
25:12
So we're pulling up now next to your SL
25:14
and, you know, in a nutshell, what do you think?
25:17
It's brought back some very good memories of stags
25:19
and also triumphs in general,
25:20
because triumphs do handle,
25:21
and this is a nice handling car.
25:23
Just the gearbox is just a bit period,
25:25
but everything else is really good.
25:26
OK, let's jump in the SL.
25:28
Right, I'm settled in the passenger seat of my SL.
25:31
Let's just close the door.
25:33
Now, Matt is heading over to have a drive of my SL.
25:36
Knowing Matt, he'll be moaning about not being able
25:38
to get into this car properly.
25:40
Stand by for some huffing and puffing.
25:42
I can't get my legs in.
25:44
Right, does the seat go back?
25:46
Probably not, does it?
25:51
No, it's stuck against the thing.
25:53
So in an SL, if you've sat in an SL at R107,
25:56
you notice you're quite head up
25:58
against the windscreen in this, aren't you?
26:00
I feel like the dashboard's right in front of me,
26:04
and the stag is sort of a little bit set back.
26:06
But it's still OK, to be honest.
26:08
I kind of feel that when I've been in SLs before,
26:10
I've just felt that my head's poking out the top,
26:12
but having had the stag, it's not much different, is it?
26:14
But the thing that hits you when you get in here,
26:16
first of all, is the quality.
26:18
This, as we said, is an 80s SL,
26:20
so this had all the refinement,
26:22
but essentially it's the same design,
26:24
but you just notice the dashboard is better quality.
26:26
Everything, all the fixtures and fittings look better quality.
26:28
The steering wheel is massive.
26:30
You know, it really is big.
26:32
I mean, it's rubbing against my leg here,
26:34
but that's just how they were.
26:36
But everything just feels more expensive,
26:38
which it was. It was double the price.
26:40
Let's fire it up and see what it's like.
26:46
Need a bit of throttle when it's hot.
26:50
OK, so it's quite muted.
26:52
It's quite lethargic, this engine, you know,
26:54
because you actually have to rev it a lot
26:56
when you're moving out of it,
26:58
and the accelerator's quite, it's got a lot of resistance,
27:00
so you don't immediately feel like revving it.
27:02
There's a bit of travel in it, isn't there?
27:06
It does sound very modern, the engine, actually,
27:08
compared to, you know, certainly,
27:10
I've driven a V8 one of these,
27:12
and that sounds a bit more old-fashioned.
27:14
This sounds a bit more modern.
27:16
It's quiet. The sound deadening is obviously here.
27:18
It's, you know, you're not,
27:20
it's not quite so much of a in-your-face experience
27:22
of driving the Stagg. It's a lot more refined.
27:24
It's inter-reversed. We'll reverse out this space we're in.
27:28
You've got the power on straight away,
27:30
and it does feel, it feels like a modern car, this.
27:32
I've got to say, you know, for a classic looking car,
27:34
it feels much more modern.
27:36
It's much heavier for a start.
27:38
Let's put it into drive.
27:40
Now, I'm having a problem with my feet.
27:42
I've got size 12 feet. I've got deck shoes on,
27:44
but I'm getting the foot core
27:46
between the throttle and the accelerator.
27:48
There's not much room in that footwell.
27:50
But pulling forward, it's very refined
27:54
It's not as quiet as a
27:56
a theme-part ride. It's a Stagg,
27:58
it's much more refined.
28:00
I think the steering on this car
28:02
feels a lot heavier than your Stagg,
28:04
and all the control weights, the accelerator, the brakes,
28:06
even when you're putting it into automatic gear,
28:08
it just feels thicker,
28:10
to be honest, more solid.
28:12
Yeah, it's heavier. It does wallow a bit, though.
28:14
It's a bit, a little bit boat-like
28:16
in terms of the way it goes down the road,
28:18
and the Stagg I would expect to be much more wallowy.
28:20
But as you say, everything's more weighted up.
28:22
You do have to give it a lot more
28:24
on that accelerator to get it going.
28:26
So we're just pulling up
28:28
down a long straight road now,
28:30
and you can hear it change. It does lurch a little bit
28:32
in the gears like mine does.
28:34
But it sits on the road quite heavy.
28:36
It feels a heavier car.
28:38
Yeah, it's certainly not a sports car, is it?
28:40
Because even just accelerating there
28:42
with the Stagg and we're up to sort of
28:46
on this car we're taking over at about 2,000,
28:48
3,000. It doesn't actually
28:50
encourage you to go any faster.
28:52
No, it doesn't. I'm sort of standing on the throttle
28:54
to get it going, to be honest. So it'd be interesting
28:56
to see when we hit this dual-carriage way
28:58
which we're coming up to, to see what it's like.
29:00
Now, again, I've got sort of,
29:04
Yeah, it's a bigger car,
29:06
but there's not a lot of room.
29:08
I mean, the indicator stalks rubbing against my leg.
29:10
I'm having to stand on the throttle a little bit
29:12
just to get around the thing.
29:14
But you just get used to stuff like that.
29:16
Fantastic. But it's very,
29:18
I'd say it's very luxurious.
29:24
comforting, supportive.
29:26
We've got an Audi trying to take us here.
29:28
I think we might back off, actually,
29:30
because I haven't got the confidence in your car
29:32
to do that. Let's give it...
29:34
What's the kick down like?
29:38
OK, so when you kick down, it doesn't exactly
29:40
lurch forward, but it then puts the power on
29:42
and you feel it slowly increase.
29:44
It's not fast at all, and actually
29:46
with this throttle, you have to be quite violent
29:48
with it. You have to stamp on
29:50
the throttle before you get it to do anything.
29:52
And that's what's noticeable about this car.
29:54
You kind of need to wake it up.
29:56
Yeah, it does take a bit of waking up.
29:58
I've just come out of a roundabout.
30:00
I've got somebody up my bum, so I was just trying
30:02
to put the power on to get away in it.
30:04
The car was like, give me a second.
30:06
I'm just idling around around about here.
30:08
Just don't disturb me. And then he went,
30:10
OK, let's do it. So it does take a while
30:12
to pick up. However, I think
30:14
once you're on the move, it's a much, much
30:16
more refined experience.
30:18
You know, I can see, you can imagine
30:20
doing long journeys in this.
30:22
I just don't think it's necessarily the play
30:24
thing that staggers.
30:26
It doesn't really enjoy the corners.
30:28
You don't really enjoy doing the corners,
30:30
isn't it? It's a kind of straight line
30:32
I wouldn't say drag stick, it's not
30:34
very fast, but it's a straight line experience.
30:38
Yeah, I agree. But what I've done while you
30:40
were looking at it is I've put my arm out
30:42
the window. And I think it is a very
30:44
relaxing car. So within a couple of minutes
30:46
of driving it, I'm already arm out the window.
30:48
I'm steering with one hand. I feel
30:50
quite relaxed. I feel like
30:52
it's really solid. And I know I'm in a
30:54
good looking car. And I know
30:56
that this will get me where I need
30:58
to go. The stag is more of a
31:00
classic car experience, I think.
31:04
a journey of optimism, really, about
31:06
what you're going to get. As it is in
31:08
this field, more German and more reliable.
31:10
Whether that's at a payoff
31:16
what's the word? Well, fun. Yeah, it's a thrill.
31:18
Whether that's the expense
31:20
of the thrill of the car, I'm not so sure.
31:22
But I think this is
31:24
a beautiful car. I mean, we'll get to the conclusions in a minute.
31:26
But in terms of driving it, we're back now on
31:28
a sort of long straight road.
31:30
I'm just doing over 30 down here
31:32
and it's under load, it's fine.
31:34
But it is interesting that
31:36
throttle, you do have to all stand on it to get it to move, don't you?
31:38
It's a lovely drive.
31:40
It's a really lovely drive, but it's interesting how
31:42
different it is because these cars
31:44
were competitors, but they're both very, very
31:46
different. Right, time for some car magazine
31:52
Right, engines off.
31:54
I think the stag is a great
31:56
concept car, but just the concept wasn't
31:58
finished, which is a shame, because like so
32:00
many BL cars, the actual
32:02
design behind it, the idea
32:04
behind it was brilliant. I mean, nothing short
32:06
of brilliant. To put a home
32:08
grown V8 in a relatively light
32:10
sports car, give it four seats
32:12
and make it look really nice.
32:14
What a great concept. But if only
32:16
they'd executed it right. If only
32:18
that engine didn't have problems, if only
32:20
to be honest, they'd got it right in the first place
32:22
and then developed it throughout the eight years
32:24
of production because that's what they did with the SL.
32:26
They started off with the concept
32:28
and they kept developing it right
32:30
to the end. Yeah, as you said
32:32
with the stag, too many cooks, wasn't it? Too many cooks,
32:34
too much politics, too many
32:36
people involved, born in a bad situation,
32:38
never quite finished off.
32:40
Yeah, I love the stag design. I think it's ugly
32:42
and beautiful in the same measure, but I do think the 107
32:44
is probably one of the prettiest convertibles
32:46
built and I probably go with the 107.
32:48
That's interesting because after
32:50
driving the stag, I think the stag is a much
32:52
better sports car. It's more
32:54
nimble, it's more alive, it's got better
32:56
steering, it accelerates better and the engine
32:58
is more interesting. That
33:00
V8 is a really interesting engine.
33:02
Yeah, I agree. I've got one last criteria.
33:04
You've got the mic, get ready to drop it.
33:06
Fun. Which of these
33:08
cars is more fun? You'd have to define fun.
33:10
I mean, I had a lot of fun in your stag
33:12
because it reminds me a lot
33:14
of BL products of the 1970s
33:16
which I love. So I had a real laugh
33:18
in your stag, but I've got
33:20
about an hour and a half to drive home along the M4
33:22
so I wouldn't take it home.
33:24
Yeah, it's very true. It's
33:26
different and I think fun
33:28
is relative. I think I could
33:30
own your car and have a lot of enjoyment
33:32
with it. I just think
33:34
with the stag, I want to put my foot down a bit more
33:36
in it. In terms of smiles, I think, I mean, they're both great
33:38
cars, don't get me wrong. I would have
33:40
either of these in a heartbeat, but I
33:42
think the stag, there's something about the stag that when you put
33:44
the foot down and you hear that note out of the exhaust,
33:48
your car is a bit more muted,
33:50
it's not designed to pleasure comes from
33:52
the refinement and the enjoyment. I think you're
33:54
right. I had a good time in your stag. I had
33:56
a lot of fun, but I'm going
33:58
home on a motorway and I'm going to take mine because
34:00
I know it's going to get me there. I think the SL
34:04
The stag though, I think it's the engine
34:06
and the sound of it that really just pips it.
34:08
You won that sound competition.
34:10
Hands down. The straight six just
34:12
doesn't sound as good. That is an amazing
34:14
sounded car. And for, you know,
34:16
classic car drivers, that's a big part of the fun.
34:18
Exactly. I mean, there's a dirty diesel
34:20
just come past as we're talking here and
34:22
you know, that sounds rubbish compared to
34:24
these cars. These cars sound not your straight six sounds great,
34:26
but the stag that V8 does
34:28
sound. Oh, it's just brilliant
34:40
So that's it. Stag versus
34:42
SL. We've come to a kind
34:44
of conclusion, I suppose.
34:46
Yeah, it's a bit of a knockout for the SL
34:48
in terms of overall,
34:50
but I still think the stag is a great car. What do you think?
34:52
Have you owned a stag? Have you owned an SL?
34:54
Have you owned both of them? Can you compare them?
34:56
Do let us know in our socials. We're at
34:58
the Tire Kickers UK on Instagram
35:00
and the Tire Kickers, three separate words
35:02
on Facebook. And we will put up loads
35:04
of photos from this group test. You'll get to
35:06
see the cars. You'll get to see them
35:08
part next to each other. So do have a look
35:10
on that. Do comment on that and do get
35:12
in touch. But until next time, it's bye from me.
