Inventory is, well, most of our dealers

are actually overstocked with inventory,

so they need to sell some cars.

But December is the time when the manufacturers

really throw incentives on there.

And let's be honest, all year long,

cars cost the same amount of money all year.

The only way you know when one time

is better than another time

is when the incentives are better

and they're peaking right now

and they will through the end of December.

So don't miss out.

If you're gonna do something,

even in the first half of 2026,

try to pull it forward to today

and I'll promise you, you'll save money.

For an hour or two, doing great?

Yeah, like I said, it's an exciting time.

It's chaotic as a lot of folks are realizing,

excuse me, this is the time of the year

when things have never been better

and our phone lines have been just overloaded

and a lot of interest to me, just people I see,

just generally who know that I'm on the show with you

been asking me questions and I'm like,

well, you need to ask the car pros some of this stuff.

I'm not the car pro, but I know enough

about the way the incentives are

and the way that the used car values are sky high,

which is unusual this time of year.

Yeah, normally they're dropping this time of year

and they've been going up.

I watched the auction Wednesday

and they just keep going up and it's across the board.

It's not just trucks and SUVs going up,

but Mercedes and Lexus luxury cars

were bringing good money,

Camry's were bringing big bucks, you know,

Accords, anything, Hyundai or Kia was bringing over

the guide, what we call MMR, Mannheim Market Report,

everything was bringing over.

It's just weird, it's weird,

but if you've got a used car to trade,

it's, man, you need to get it right now

because everything is lined up

and I will be happy to help you.

Well, I have recently moved to Lubbock, Texas.

I'm recently widowed, 85 years old.

I live in an assisted living facility

which has transportation but limited.

I gave away my car when I moved.

I am looking for purchasing another vehicle or leasing.

I don't know what to purchase

and I don't know if I should purchase or lease.

My husband handled the vehicles in the past

and I basically know nothing about them.

I did have a 2015 Subaru Forester

which I gave away when I moved.

Okay, that was my next question.

What were you driving before then?

How much do you anticipate driving?

Not very much, probably not outside of Texas.

Basically just tooling around the area.

Yeah, you just want your freedom.

That's correct, yes.

I don't blame you a bit.

I think a lease would work very well for you

or buy something low mileage used.

One of the two.

Are you gonna need to finance a car

or are you gonna be able to pay cash for it?

I can pay cash.

Okay.

You know, given the low miles

that I think you're gonna drive

and I always ask that when we talk about leases

but there's a point where if you don't drive enough,

it's gonna be hard to justify leasing.

So for those reasons,

I think I'd probably lean for you

to a low mileage used SUV.

And I'll give you a couple to consider.

Look at the Chevy Trax,

which is a wonderful SUV

that you could buy under $20,000 used.

Look at the Nissan Kix,

which is another one

that you could buy for under $20,000 used.

And see what's around there in your area between those two.

If you can get in one under $20,000

with under 30,000 miles,

a couple of years old,

that's gonna be your cheapest driving, I believe,

because you're in a position to pay cash.

You can't make the case for a new car for you.

I just don't think you're gonna use it enough

but a good used SUV,

either one of those would do you well, Joe.

And I wish I had dealers there to help you with

but I just don't.

one that really caught my attention is the Subaru story.

This is one of their situations

where they apparently have pop-up ads

that are on their infotainment screens

and it pushes serious XM

and these aren't just when you start the car up.

Apparently this could be right in the middle of your trip

as you're possibly using the navigation

or doing something else.

Boom, this ad just pops up

and I'm not sure how long it is,

whether it's 10, 15 seconds, 30,

but it's long enough to probably throw you off,

I would imagine, if you're trying to use navigation.

That could be kind of a safety issue I would think.

I would think so too,

but more than anything, it'd make me mad.

I wouldn't like it either, for sure.

But I love serious XM, I love Subaru,

but hopefully they'll get this figured out

where maybe as you start the car up

or something like that, I could see that going on,

but not during the trip though.

Or let you choose.

How can I help you, sir?

Wow, this is a, I'm a first time caller

and first time listener.

Well, good to have you.

Well, my daughter is out of Roy City

or actually Rockwall County.

Oh, wow.

I parked my Debbie Tahoe, my 2021 out there

and been using it back and forth.

Actually, my wife, when she goes from California,

we go back and forth and love it there.

However, we parked it there for 10 months.

So I said, we need to bring it back.

We had a big rain here in California,

which is like an inch compared to Texas,

which is real rain and real weather.

Yeah, yeah.

Know the difference.

Oh, yeah.

But however, it was probably a bigger rain

and our Tahoe started leaking water

all in the, from the rear window

to the mirror, all that.

So I took it to the dealer

that was water everywhere.

I have had that three years, 35,000 miles warranty

and I've had it over three years, but it was under 30,000.

Then I also bought the Ally Extended Warranty.

And so I take it back to that dealer

because they say, well, you know,

they're gonna have to check it.

They're gonna have to spend this money.

So I said, go ahead.

This is why I bought it there

and take it to that dealer.

And they give you like,

you don't have to pay the extra $200.

That is, right, or actually the depositor.

Anyway, what they found was,

that's acceptable.

Thank you for that one.

Yeah, sure.

Well, what ended up happening was

after they took off the headliner

and they quoted us like over a thousand bucks,

they said it was plugs and the drains were plugged.

And the only way they could come out

was the way they did

because like we said underneath a tree or something.

Well, they didn't cover it.

And then Ally, you know,

so they said there's no warranty on that.

And I'm like, well, I honestly thought,

which I love the vehicle.

The vehicle's been great.

However, on something like that,

where you get blindsided,

where you don't have any kind of maintenance

or, you know, if I knew I didn't change my oil

and that's my fault, that's one thing.

But if there was something so,

gee, you know, you need to clean your drains every year.

Otherwise, this is gonna happen.

You know, so I spent over a thousand dollars

out of my pockets as a dealer

and I felt I was robbed.

And that's where I'm thinking,

well, do I have any,

any say so in that?

I know out here they have a lemon law and,

but the more I looked at YouTube

and the more I start seeing,

a lot of people have had these same issues.

So I just wondered if I,

my wife was already like,

should we just buy a new vehicle?

I go, I don't think it's the vehicle.

If they would have just let us know

or there was some kind of, you know, maintenance

like changing your transmission oil

and every 25,000 miles.

Checking for these drains that are plugged up.

Robert, before we run out of time,

I wanna get your question answered.

Unfortunately, you don't have anything there

because it is a common issue.

And with extended warranties,

they don't cover common issues.

They cover extraordinary issues.

So, you know, if you had a,

stupid as it sounds,

if you had an engine go out,

it would be covered but your drain lines

for your moonroof are not covered.

And the dealer can't do anything about it.

But, I mean, I wish I had better news,

but you just got nothing here.

You answered one of my questions earlier, I think,

in a way I was gonna ask you

what you thought the company was doing.

You know, you know,

I was gonna ask you

What you thought the comparison

was between the Ford Maverick or the Ford Ranger

and the Tacoma was another choice.

I think I'm gonna argue

or I think I would believe that you would say

Ford Ranger out of that story.

You know, I included the Maverick, but yeah.

What do you use your truck for, Ray?

It won't be anything for driving

and occasionally picking up something

like a sword, but no, I'm not following anything

and not pulling anything

or anything like that.

Well, I just like the Ranger better

because it looks more truck-like

than the Maverick.

Oh, it is.

It is.

It's more of a truck.

It's got way more capacity

and that's why I wanted to wonder

what you use your truck for

because the Maverick Hybrid,

the Maverick Hybrid will do

a real 40 plus mile per gallon.

And the surprising thing for me

when I reviewed it

was how roomy it was inside

because if you just look at it,

it doesn't look like it would be

very big inside,

but then when you can sit in that back seat,

there was a ton of room back there.

So if you're looking...

Can you talk about the Ranger?

I'm sorry?

Oh, are you talking about the Ranger truck?

No, I'm talking about the Maverick.

Okay, the Maverick.

I got you.

So if you're looking for fuel economy

and a pleasant ride and drive,

the Maverick's great,

but if you actually need a pickup

but you don't need a full half-ton truck,

the Ranger is a very good fit

for a lot of people

and Ford does a horrible job

promoting that truck.

You don't ever see ads for them.

They don't build enough of them.

One of the biggest problems

with Ranger over the past couple of years

has been the dealers can't get enough of them.

And boy, that doesn't make any sense to me.

The only thing I can figure out

is they Ford as a manufacturer

just doesn't make enough money on them

and they'd rather try to force people

into an F-150.

And other than that,

I agree with you 100%.

The Ranger is a great truck.

He takes years to learn all about buying

or trading cars,

and chances are,

you haven't reached that year yet.

is maybe a little bit of vetting,

if possible.

with bait and switch

and some of the crazy things

that they make it,

the hoops they make it jump through,

but they just don't know

what to do.

Merry Christmas to you. I don't know if this is a question for you, but you've given so much

advice to so many people. I thought, let me just ask. Sure. I purchased a 2025 HRV this year

for a wheel drive. I love it. It's a sport model and I purchased it on a fly. I was out with my daughter.

She wanted to get a new car because hers was total. She needed that moral support. So I was

with her and I was in an accord at the time that had a recall, I think on a part that wasn't yet

in stock. And so I was driving it and being, you know, I was a little nervous about that.

So while I was at the dealership with my daughter, I mentioned the HRV and I said,

this is what I really wanted when I brought in my old Kia that the Kia dealer would not trade in.

It was a hybrid. I had 96,000 miles and it was starting to pick up and, you know,

was spending money on repairs and still making monthly payments. So they gave me a Honda Accord

and I was upside down at the Kia. So they financed the balance

with the Accord. So while I'm at the shop with my daughter, the dealership, I mentioned the HRV

and I said, this is what I really wanted. So the sales person said, well, I think it's you

in an HRV. And I said, there's no way I'm not here for that. I have the down payment, blah,

blah, blah, you know, I was upside down to begin with and the Honda. And but I mentioned the

fact that there was a recall in the Honda and I was really nervous about that. So

after my daughter was dealt with and she was on her way home in her brand new car,

the sales person said, okay, now let's deal with you. So long story, I ended up driving

off the lot in a brand new HRV. However, don't be down. So my payments are astronomical.

And I need to refinance my car. And I was, you know, I think Honda, American Honda is who

is is my financier who I'm financing the car with. Can I refinance with them? My payment

is just ridiculous. Okay, let's, let's talk about, let's talk about what you currently have.

What interest rate are you paying? And how long did you finance it for?

It's five years. And I think it's about six,

.7, I think. Yeah, you could refinance it.

It's really high. You could refinance it and go 72 months on it.

But I'm going to tell you that the payment difference isn't going to be all that great.

Okay, there are play around with it. And here's what you do. There are some

auto loan calculators out there online. Just Google auto loan calculator. And, and,

what, if, if you're, I never want to see people stretch their loans. But if you went 72 and you

could get a better interest rate, and I don't think American Honda is going to be the one

for you. Do you have a bank or a credit union that you have a relationship with?

Yes, that's probably who you want to talk to. That's going to be your best shot.

With interest rates down some now, especially within the last week, they dropped another half

point. If you can get a four and a half, 5% loan for 72 months and you know you're going to keep

this HRV for the full term. So you're going to, you're going to plan on keeping it for

six years. I'm okay with that. That's good. But you're, you've been upside down the last

two times. If you try it again, if you try it again, it's only going to get worse.

Yes. So, you know, think about that. But if you could go 72 at a lower rate,

you could probably save yourself 75 bucks a month.

That's hardly anything. Okay. I know. That's what, that's what I'm telling you.

Is it worth that to do it and then have another whole year to pay?

I don't think so, but it's not my money, it's yours.

Oh darn. Yeah. I was thinking that, you know, I went with Honda because of the reputation

of the mileage they could get on a Honda. No, you did great. You made a good choice.

You made a good choice. You can't, you just can't keep rolling money from one loan to the next

to the next. Correct. There's a day of reckoning always. And I've seen, I've seen cases where

people were over $30,000 upside down because they kept trading. And it's a point when you get that

card that you really like and it's the one you want and you make sure it's a good one,

which you did, then you settle in and just say, okay, I'm going to, I'm going to pay this car off.

And then, then, then you're free and clear with the world and you can do whatever you want to.

But, you know, talk to your banker credit union and let's see if 75 bucks a month or whatever it

turns out to be, I'm guessing, but I don't think I'm off very much. If that turns out

to be not a big enough deal for you, then don't do it. Right. Keep, keep, keep what you got. Hey,

you just got to, you got to look at it. You can't keep, you can't keep rolling.

It's going to get worse and worse if you keep doing that. Well, you roll a bunch of money in

and the minute you drive off the lot, you take the massive depreciation and then you're further upside

Well, before you think, in a city here, here's a Waymo Robo Taxi. Let's give this a try and see

how things go. Before you do that, need to read the story that Jerry posted in the newsletter

on Friday concerning a Waymo Robo Taxi in Los Angeles that drove into an active crime scene.

Now, not where the person wanted to go, obviously, and as evidenced by the police that were shouting

at the car to stop, which good luck. Didn't really help the situation. No, it did not.

That was a pretty big mess. Now, I think Waymo said they're going to be looking into it and

all that kind of thing. I think we are close. I don't know how close we are, but we're not quite

ready for prime time with those driverless taxis. In my opinion, that would be, I would be afraid.

I mean, stories like this just reinforce it for me not to really want to get in one.

Worse, they're having to recalling like 3,000 of those same Waymo cars because

they pass school buses that are letting kids out of the bus, lights flashing, the whole deal,

and they just drive on pass. That's crazy. Yeah. That's a bad deal right there.

Yeah. For years, I thought that the best time to buy a car in the whole year was just the last

week in December, but has that changed so that now it seems like it's all the way from

Black Friday through the end of December? Is that right? Has it changed?

Yeah. Everybody starts earlier now. Even Lexus, with December to remember, starts at the first

of November. They've pulled the year end events up, but what you've always thought is still true

in that as we get deeper into it, the incentives go up. I saw that this week,

where all November and the first of December rebates were good, but they got better,

and they'll maintain that until the end of the year. I don't see them going up any more

than they already have, but yeah, there's no doubt. This is the best time of year to buy,

and it never changes. So, for electric vehicles, what's the best way to find out

what dealers have zero down on leasing and also lowest payment on leasing?

Well, they'll all do zero down on leasing. That's not a problem, but shopping the payments,

what do you think you want next?

Yeah, it would be the first electric, but I'm thinking a Chevy, one of the Chevy brands,

and I haven't really looked at what all they may have in electric. I've got reviews up on the,

if you're going to go with an SUV, I've had the electric Equinox, I've had the electric Blazer,

I've had the electric Silverado. I do think General Motors does the best job with

electrics of any manufacturer out there, including Tesla. I think General Motors is

building a better vehicle than Tesla is, and I like Tesla's, but I agree that the electrics,

if you're going to get one, leasing is the only way to go. I'd look at the Equinox, if I were you.
