ReNissan is a plan by Nissan to make the company more efficient and profitable. It includes cutting costs and reducing the number of factories they have.
e-Power technology is a way for Nissan to make hybrid cars that run on electricity but don't need to be plugged in. Instead, they use a gasoline engine to create electricity while you drive.
The Nissan Rogue is a popular SUV that many people use for everyday driving. It can run on electricity for a short distance, making it more efficient and better for the environment.
Lithium-ion packs are a type of battery that stores electricity. They are used in many electric cars because they can hold a lot of energy and last a long time.
Ute culture is about the popularity of utility vehicles in Australia. These vehicles are often used for work but are also great for leisure activities like camping or sports.
Off-road suspension is a special kind of setup for a vehicle that helps it drive better on bumpy or rough roads. It makes the car higher off the ground and helps it absorb shocks.
All-wheel drive means that power goes to all four wheels of the car, which helps it grip the road better, especially in bad weather or off-road conditions.
A locking differential helps both wheels on the same axle turn together, which is useful for getting out of tough spots when driving off-road or in slippery conditions.

No EV News China today, our spin-off podcast looking at what happens in the east.
It's the weekend, we do it weekdays.
It'll return in the early hours of Monday morning.
Ferrari revealed its first fully electric vehicle, Cabin, in San Francisco.
They named it Luce.
Not loose, as I initially thought it was, L-U-C-E.
No, that is Italian for light or illumination.
Luce, which does everything sound better in Italian, doesn't it?
Departure from the brand's typical alphanumeric or geographic naming conventions.
The Cabin design created in partnership with a firm called LoveFrom.
That's a design outfit founded by the former Apple head designer, Joni Ive.
It represents the most significant outcome of Ferrari's collaboration with the studio.
Working alongside Ferrari design chief, Flavio Manzoni, LoveFrom designed an interior
that rejects the screen-heavy trend dominated by EVs.
Instead, machined aluminium buttons and toggles provide mechanical and acoustic feedback
while Corning Glass, the kind that you'd find on the front of an iPhone,
on the interfaces, the surfaces is present and the shifter is there as well
for scratch resistance and they say clarity of the optics.
The Luce forms the centrepiece of the CEO's electrification strategy, Benedetto Vigna.
He's prioritising maintaining Ferrari's pricing power and margins
using software and user experience to make the cars different.
The four-door vehicle is over a thousand horsepower, four electric motors,
2.5 seconds to 62 miles an hour, top speed of 310 kph, 530 kilometres of range.
None of that matters if the experience doesn't feel Ferrari.
And for many people who buy a Ferrari, I've known one person who buys Ferraris.
I worked for him, in fact he was my boss and I didn't really ask about engines or EVs.
He was super into EVs but I'm guessing that part of the emotional aspect
is the sound and the noise and the burbling and that's absolutely fine
for Ferraris and Lamborghinis and Pagani Zonders etc.
Not everything has to go EV.
The exterior reveal arrives in May in Italy, delivery start this October.
Reuters reported the vehicle will exceed $500,000 to buy one
and you've probably got to have a few Ferraris in your collection
before you're even invited to buy one.
And some people like and don't like that element of Ferraris.
Jay Leno has spoken about how the ownership experience of a Ferrari
is all a little bit distasteful to him.
You've got to have X, Y, Z in your garage before they even take your call
and then if you're lucky they'll sell you one of these.
He says that's not his thing but it is for many people
and they might well go for the Luce.
We'll see how visceral this experience is.
If it were me I would love Ferrari to turn up all of the mechanical noises
of the motors and just everything about mechanically the car.
I suspect they'll add some fake sounds in but we'll wait and see.
Super interesting that the former head of Apple design Johnny Ive did the insides
and there are a couple of screens because you can't make an EV without screens
and they haven't gone completely anti-screen but it looks very classical.
And I've talked about this a few times over the last maybe two years or so
when I've seen big cars come out like the Rolls Royce Spectre came out
and there's some other high-end EVs.
They had quite large screens particularly Mercedes-Benz EQS with a hyperscreen
the whole slab of glass.
To me it's distasteful and to me I've mentioned this a few times
I hope we get away from this because an EV doesn't equal other things
so an EV doesn't equal disappearing door handles
an EV doesn't equal big screens it's just running on a battery after all
but this trend it doesn't feel very classy
says the person who's never going to afford one of these cars
so who cares what I think.
I'm quite pleased to see small screens and just more engineering,
tactile, lovely things to touch.
For me that feels premium anyway.
Let's move on and a car that won't have to worry about such things
that's Nissan's new plug-in hybrid the CEO wants more profit
not volume and he plans to get it with a broad mix of powertrains
Mr. Espinosa Ivan Espinosa took over last April
and launched the restructuring program called ReNissan
it targets cost savings of 3.2 billion US dollars equivalent
and aims to lower the break-even point of the vehicles
the plan also calls for reducing global assembly plants from 17 to 10
and cutting jobs by 20,000 that is brutal
he says Nissan can't rely on higher volumes as rising regulatory and tech costs
and new competitors adjust their margins
not about selling more making more money he says
the profit first stance now shapes Nissan's strategy
he says Nissan remains committed to pure bebs in the long term
but in the short term will change their strategy
and have some more plug-in hybrids in Europe
automakers face tighter fleet targets while incentives have scaled back
Nissan will expand its e-power technology
that's where there's no plug socket on the side
so you have to put fuel in but it's a generator
which drives electric motors I mean just let us charge it
let it's ridiculous stupid system just let us charge the vehicles
overnight on cheap rate electricity if you really want to have an engine
but they don't they say the e-power will become e-rev
which is I think a good thing because that means a plug socket
so the product plan already shows the shift happening
Nissan prepares to launch a rogue plug-in hybrid in the US this year
42 miles of electric only range which is trampled all over
by some of the Chinese plug-in hybrids frankly
but they will import the rogue from Japan
until the Tennessee production starts in 2028
in China they have a 3-row SUV the NX8
that's an e-rev using lithium-ion packs from CATL
with 185 kilometers of range
electrically more evidence of the China stuff that we don't get
now BYD is next in the news the Shark 6 has been one of my standout vehicles
we don't get it here but the Shark 6 has done big business
in Australia now it sells one of them
the premium grade it's $58,000 before on-road costs
BYD Australia says the brand wants to keep the Shark's value for money
without constantly tweaking the price because it affects residuals
and things like that so the Shark 6 is really interesting
it's a ute it's a pickup which is obviously ute culture is very popular
not just for tradies in Australia but for people as well that use them for leisure vehicles
mostly working vehicles I think I'm right in saying
but Australian listeners please correct me
BYD will announce official details for an upgraded Shark 6
in the next few months the updated ute will reach showrooms
around the middle of the year
the aim reads like substance rather than just fluff or trim
BYD management confirming the move from 2,500 to 3,500 kilograms
for towing that's a really big deal
3,500 kg towing puts it in line with anything else
that's combustion powered
Shark 6 carries 790 kilograms payload
again that's absolutely fine for most people
you can get 1,050 kilograms for rivals
and it's going to hit that number as well
Fleet sales sit on the agenda too
the BYD senior manager Stephen Collins
says that BYD will target Fleet sales for growth this year
a cab chassis Shark 6 would suit trade ute
and allow customization as well
the lineup will feature a cheaper, despect kind of essential trim
if you like and a new flagship
with lifted off-road suspension
chunky attires as standard and mechanical improvements
to BYD Australia plans to expand its off-road lineup
with the Denza B5 and the B8 SUVs
the Shark 6 shares the same platform
with the Denza B5 which has just been introduced to Australia
and that matters because the current Shark 6
counts as all-wheel drive rather than a 4x4
i.e. no low-range functionality
no locking diff relying on the electronic traction control
for off-road stuff
a future Shark 6 could switch to the B5's DMO drivetrain
DMO also brings locking differentials
front and rear, two-speed rear transmission
a low-range crawling gear
BYD has five full-time engineers in Australia
and two dedicated teams in China
to engineer the vehicle for that market
so perhaps a bit of off-road calibration happening
bigger numbers may also come from the battery and system side
China's motoring press reports
working on the new DMI-6 platform
900-volt architecture, new LFP pack
and 300 km of electric only range
that's on the China cycle
also more power for vehicle to load
that new Shark 6 I think if they just improve it
in all aspects is going to be just the default
choice for a ute because it will just do everything
and if you really really want to go to the petrol pump
and put more in it doesn't stop you doing that
and those vehicles I've always said
those vehicles are not for me
I love not going to the petrol pump anymore
I love filling up overnight at home cheaply
for what costs me like five quid at home
which would be 45 or 50 quid in petrol or diesel
but I appreciate everyone's different
and I think mandating things
and forcing people into things
and if they just really love filling up with petrol
and they don't want to plug in with electricity
then let them have at it if you ask me
BYD still in the news today
will manufacture it at 02 that's an electric SUV
at its new Hungarian facility
so that means it avoids the European Union's 27%
extra tariff on BYD's
the model launched in Europe last April
and competes against things like the Hyundai Kona
the Ford Puma, Peugeot E2008
E3008, the Škoda Epic
the VW ID Cross that's coming
the plant in Hungary
will produce 300,000 vehicles annually
across four models the Dolphin Surf
hatchback entering test production at the moment
a plug-in hybrid at 02 will come in from China
because plug-in hybrids not affected by the tariffs
BYD is expanding its European manufacturing
to three facilities
including an existing Turkish plant
making the Seal U which became Europe's
top selling plug-in hybrid in 2025
Spain and Germany
potential sites for more production
Cherry plans to start making its own vehicles
in Spain this year
they say as soon as possible
according to the vice president and CEO
for the European region
he spoke at an event in Madrid
but wouldn't say which quarter
production begins the date marks a slip
for what would be Cherry's first European factory
the start moved later into 2026
after an earlier delay
they were meant to start in Barcelona in 2024
Cherry citing commercial reasons
for the delay
they would build things like the SUV
the Omoda V in Barcelona
and perhaps it's JQ7
which I've talked a little about recently
that was the number two selling car
of all powertrains in the UK
recently last month in January

Hey, welcome back to the podcast
now let's talk a little bit about
Toyota is
teasing an electric highlander
for the United States battery only
actually and there's not much
if you want a battery only electric
car from Toyota that's any good anyway
a new teaser says
the company will fully reveal the
redesigned
three row SUV
very soon the 11 second video
shows simply the badge on the back
saying battery electric vehicle
and all-wheel drive
Toyota describes the vehicle as sleek, modern
and electric with three rows
that's for the United States by the way
so that could be a very popular vehicle
Toyota very popular there
frankly what they've had to sell you so far
has been pretty terrible
the BZ4X is pretty awful
the
redesigned one they refreshed it
is marginally better
Toyota have got all the money and talent they need
to make good EVs they choose not to
let's hope this Highlander that's coming
is going to be good it follows the
declining Highlander sales
since Toyota introduced the larger Grand Highlander
in 2023
Highlander sales peaked at
264,000 units a year in 2021
but fell 37%
last year
Grand Highlander sales have been
rising though showing that people want those larger
three row vehicles
so it could be with
a nameplate that's in decline anyway
on its way down Toyota could be thinking
let's electrify that which is really smart
because it's a nameplate that people know
the whole BZ
beyond zero stupidity
should I think
go as soon as possible
Toyota management have said that that was a mistake
they're not going to do any more of the BZs
apart from in China where they're going to
maybe carry on that naming scheme
Audi has chosen
substance over
spectacle for the refresh of its A6 and Q6
the A6 e-tron and Q6 e-tron families
have had big tech
upgrades aimed at usability and everyday
ownership rather than any kind of
flashy toys the update mirrors the change
to the A5 and Q5 adding
specific electric additions
new interface simplifies the
layout and fewer menus on the
MMI more contrasts
or 3D vehicle modeling all stuff that looks
good third-party apps like Apple CarPlay
and Android Auto now
all properly full color
the virtual cockpit gets new views
a classic instrument cluster either the NavMap
or a driver assistance overview
adding some more navigation
on the smartphone connection media and
phone apps now mirroring the driver display
not just the center screen both models
are on the PPE platform
premium platform electric
giving the company a stable foundation
to start iterating on that
software the optional
passenger display
in supports bluetooth headphones now for gaming
or video again that's the
thing that perhaps
if you have passengers that want to watch a screen
up front
could be useful for
I've rounded enough about there being too many screens
in cars these days more practical is the new
Dashcam 4K HDR
Dashcam the system saves
footage to an SD card with no cloud upload
and records event based
clips if you want 30 seconds
or and after any kind of
emergency braking event or hazard
lights anything like that playback
happens on the display
in the vehicle there's new B mode regen
braking that will bring the vehicle to a complete
stop using regen alone
which is I think these days basic
like that should be the price of entry
for an electric vehicle if
you ask me they've sharpened up accelerator
response and the brake torque vectoring
and drive select assistance
adapt the drive modes based
on road conditions and route type
as well I can now
steer
for up to 150 feet
on trained parking
spaces called reverse assist
also reverse parking maneuvers
as well like parking in your garage
Audi has introduced a thing called
power nap mode this is cool
so if you go to charge in
charge plug in rather and charge up
for 20 minutes 25 minutes
this will now create a calm cabin
atmosphere they say
that it will put you into an experience world
blending lighting sound
massage and climate control
a minor indulgence but the kind
of stuff that Audi can do
that I just think is just cool
if you ask me
so what's it gonna cost you
the a6 sportback e-tron starts
at 52,000 pounds or 66,500
US dollars that's rear
wheel drive version
the s6 sportback
goes up to 543
horsepower for 80,000 US
the qtron the qtron the q6 e-tron
what's going on with my brain and mouth today
q6 e-tron that is obviously
all wheel drive starting at 65,000
US dollars and the q6
sportback going all the way up to
75 and a half for the sq6
finally congratulations to the team
at Volkswagen they've now built
5 million
edu's electric
drive units that is
all lit across their various plants
the tally shows how far
volkswagen's shared hardware
has pushed the company
from well the early days
castle
the lynchpin of the network
raised the output in 2025
to 850,000 drive units
the workhorse is the so called
app 550 that's kind of the internal name
the app 550 that's
a motor by the way
used in the family of vehicles
i think scott at eniac
cupra tava scan and more
they added more power to that
more torque and
more
more power but cut the energy use
so that's been a really kind of game changing
upgrade at volkswagen
volkswagen group components that bit of the business
oversaw the full
span of the electric drives
engineering industrialization power electronics
logistics and stuff like that
the next push comes from the pulse inverter
again all designed in-house by volkswagen
so not going to
their supplies list
and seeing what they can buy off the shelf
by swapping external supplies
for doing it all themselves
volkswagen say they want to speed up model development
trim their costs and keep tighter control
the inverter pairs with the new motor
you'll see in the small vehicles
so again internal name that is the ap290
motor that uses
silicon carbide semiconductors
it's 400 volt platform
you'll see that on the urban car family
which i think we'll talk a lot about this year
i suspect anyway so
id polo, scott epic, cupra reval
et cetera et cetera
up to 166 kilowatts of power
plenty of day to day performance on that little motor
and they're going to make a ton of those too
congratulations 5 million drive units though at volkswagen
that's a nice
nice big milestone thanks to our premium partners
