Is The New Subaru STI a MUST or a BUST? And Toyota GR GT Thoughts

But what what I've heard in in the world of automotive news is

The introduction of special trims and models coming back. We're gonna be talking a little bit about the Toyota

GTG are essentially the

GR GT

They stole it from Genesis and the magma GT because they did it first how many car

Companies use the fucking term GT for literally talking about this the other day. There's so many

Letter combinations that just get reused for whatever reasons you I would love to be a fly on the wall

To the 16 year old kid that typed in GTR and not Nissan and got his first experience

Understanding that there are multiple vehicles that have the GTR nameplate and how cool all of them are yep, like the Mercedes-Benz

AMG GTR is a fantastically cool vehicle neat one

Congratulations to Krispy for buying an AMG

As well, I think you got a black edition super cool spec. I love those cars pull. I really want one

I'm hoping the podcast community bullies me until I get one because I need one badly

But anyway, there are some other trims other other little hints other

Teasers that are coming at us in the world of the automotive culture and I think Subaru is one of them. Is that right Dakota?

It was revealed in Tokyo that there is an STI trim coming back after Subaru stated clearly that they would not be making an STI

Possibly to yes, they revealed to the E and the B the E obviously is an EV looks really wild

That one looks just like a straight-up concept. There's no door handles. There's no reflectors like it's like any doors

It looks cool though. I'm not I'm not downplayed looks cool

But you know like if it were to go production it would change a lot. Yeah, like that the B

That's the boxer. They had a manual transmission big deal. Yeah hatchback. Yep actual engine not EV and

That one looked fully flushed out ready to go that looks like a like hey, we're launching this like next week

Yeah, and both were hatchbacks, which I think I fuck with it as you guys know

I'm not the biggest Subaru person, but those got me excited. Yeah, I'm I'm hyped for it

I mean, I think it's dope that they're bringing that nameplate back

I think it's dope that they're bringing a hatchback back, but also back. It's a it's like a tall hatchback

But it's kind of a big car at least from the photos that I've seen. Well, they had that giant wing out

He was literally fighting off the concepts of rust in his garage for a bug eye to be or they've completely just

Repaneled the whole car probably more likely that one than anything else this concept B1

It does kind of look like then the VB, but it yeah looks better like they flush it out

Yeah, so I was kind of like the type R like the 10th gen type R like how it looks really aggressive with aro and stuff

It's like they kind of went with that. Yeah, it did give me a lot of

Like callbacks to to that it does look honestly like and it makes sense because it's essentially what they did

But you know, they took like the newer impresa and they just threw a big wing on it through made a hatchback

Some bigger arches on her fender arches on it and made of the hatchback

I think it looks decent at the front to me is missing something

It looks like it looks a little like too rounded in the front where the rest is like really like angular

Looks like it's an SUV that got lowered

That's the that's the concept future one

Everybody's infatuation with turbo fans on concept cars has me feeling a type of way too for those that don't know

To turbo fans are like that almost like outside lip on a wheel

That usually is a different color or it has this like protruding teardrop element and it's meant to

Simulate what an old turbo fan on a rally car was supposed to do which was

Protect the calipers from rocks to dissipate heat and in some cases even help with downforce in the way that it pulled

An air from the fans now every concept car that I feel like I ever see has turbo fans on it

Especially if it's an EV dude, it's like the unofficial official

Wheel like design of 2026 turbo fan style became like the future

And I don't know why like I've never watched SpongeBob by the way. I only understand it through memes. Oh my god

Never watched it. Mm-hmm. All I know is I know memes and very specific moments and gifts

I'd have never watched like probably watch it. Yeah, you should catch up anyway

Do you guys think the E version compared to the B version which let's say they did they dropped both

What do you think sales would be like do you think one would slaughter the other do you think it'd be kind of even?

I do think that the B would slaughter the E

I think that are buying that are truly in the market to go buy a super WX STI

They ain't fucking with EVs. I don't know. I think it would sell right

I think it would be like there would be a market for it, but like I think the

Actual gas engine version would like two to one at least see

I just don't think people who buy the Ford Mustang and people who buy the Mach E are the same demographic, right?

So I think that I think the EV would do just fine because the people that are going to buy that are

People that used to be art teachers back in 2002 and they're trying to get something

That's electric and they have a little bit more money because they're old as shit and they retired

And so they're gonna buy the fancy STI. I was gonna say in the last it depends on the price to the last three years

How many completely normal non-car enthusiast people have you seen driving WRX's?

I feel like it is just skyrocket. I mean, that's also true

Leasing programs are insane at the STIs though because there isn't one there isn't one there was for but like all the WRX's that

I see though at least around here and when we always talk about that like they are like the VAWRX's

Tons of EV's. Yeah, I do own stock. Yeah, that's a

That's a good I still I still think that the the gas version would blow it out of the water

See, I think everybody wants to say that but like the more time I've spent with these like newer platforms that are

Kind of taking a little bit of a hint to like the old past the EV's I think are what allow these

car manufacturers to even make

The IC versions and I think they're putting more technology in the EV version to be more competitive right out of the gate

And that's fine

The fucking gas version is gonna sell more. I hate to tell you. I don't know. I don't know

I don't know if it would honestly. I think people are coming around

And there'd be a lot more interest in the EV one versus a few I don't disagree that EV's are coming

I mean when we had

How yeah, we monoxid they were talking like they had Maki and they love it

It's like yeah, like I'm not saying there's not a market out there that market isn't growing

But I'm saying you put two STIs out here

And here's an electric version and here's a gas version that you've been waiting how many years for but let me just let me

Let's say they drop both and one comes with a two and a half liter turbo with

300 horsepower like it has since Jesus crossed the rivers and

The second option is a EV version and it comes with a dual-motor setup that has

680 horsepower and

750 foot-pounds of torque

How would you not want to have that? I'm not trying to be that guy. I'm just saying

Like you gotta remember to car enthusiasts are such a small percentage of the actual market

That's buying cars what we would choose is car enthusiasts

Yeah, I would say car enthusiasts would definitely buy the STI

But I'm thinking gen pop them people in Tesla's that got excited about it

They're kind of bored of it and want to get something new and all these people they're going into the EV market

I think they would be all over that

I think you bring up a really interesting point about the idea that I always consider Tesla people as

Like first time 16 year old just got my license car people. Here's why

There's so many people. No, just hear me out here when I first went to my very first like Tesla

group thing in California and they were talking about having modified Tesla's

I saw the very same type of mods that I saw on a hundred and twenty thousand dollar Tesla as I did on the

$3,000 Honda Civic that was sitting in the parking lot at my high school back in 2010

It was like the same. I want to express myself

I want to do something else, but they didn't know anything about anything

So everything they chose was wrong if you get a Tesla, you are automatically

Put some license plate custom license plate that plays off of a spin-off of some fucking nerd thing

Most likely electric of some sort

and throw it on some

Horrible fitting wheels because you don't know what wheel offset is so what do they do they get smarter?

So then they go out and they look for other cars other cars that are fun

You know how many people that I've met that had a Tesla Model 3 and then got an Ionic 5n and talked about how much they love the

5n because it's like a fun

Performance EV and how much more they enjoy compared to the the Model 3?

I'm convinced that that EV audience is gonna start going through the world of like hey Tesla's not the only option

I want to try this. I want to do this. I want to do this. I wouldn't be surprised to see people jump in into one

I could see that

Again, you're talking about an already niche audience becoming a more niche audience to buy this car

I I don't say I do not see that in any fucking world and I could be wrong

I could be totally wrong. I don't see it in any fucking world that outselling the petrol version, you know, I don't get that

I don't know it's gonna be crazy more expensive because it's an EV and it just doesn't make

Sense gels. That's an old take. They're not that expensive. They're not that much more expensive. We don't know anymore

Yeah, it'll be interesting to see where the the price comes if it's like that much of a difference where it's like 300 horsepower and 600

I could see him jacking up the price for the EV one again

That conversion is so weird though when it comes to electric. You don't know what I thought it was fast

You know what I thought was weird to a certain point the the thing that I thought really fun was when we were doing the the

Gv60 reveal we were talking to all the guys about how they made this thing better

And so they had to explain it and there was like a little fancy symbol on I can't remember what it was

But the dual electric motors have a rev range maximum rev range what they call it of

20,920 revs, okay, so like rotations

but

that

translates to a

internal driver

RPM rev range of 9,000 rpm

Make that make sense. Well, let's be make that make sense

That's a lot of math. I can't figure it out. Yeah, honest

So with that being said gels hates electric vehicle. I don't hate electric vehicles. He literally just said it

I literally said multiple times that I don't hate it and that I see that there's an audience that it's a growing

Demographic and a growing audience. I'm just saying again and to reiterate

There's not a fucking snowball chance in hell that that car is selling more than the gas version. I

Think gels is a sleeper Subaru enthusiast. I

Think from a car enthusiast perspective. Yes a hundred percent, but from a general pop. I don't I think it could be close

Lease programs. It's all the financing the financing exactly. They're doing that on EVs too. Yeah, because they can't fucking sell them

Bought in a car off that principle the Nissan leaf was like seventy nine dollars a month like goddamn ten years

That was nuts. I drive around little Appleton, Wisconsin, and I see fucking eight Tesla trucks

The cyber trucks, I think we just see the one a lot. No, I I've seen multiple because there's wrap black ones

I've seen orange. I see a green baby backer one. I've seen a silver one

Speaking about cars that I feel like seeing an actual silver one is rare because I said they're all wrap some shit

I want to spend a second here because gels is gels hates electric use. We got to change the subject really pissed off

There's a car out there that I got a lot of

love for from

Vehicle virgins I was talking to him and we were talking about different types of cars that have been released in 2025

I wanted to get your guys's thoughts since we're coming to the end of this year

And I said, what's an underrated car that you drove that you really enjoy and he's like, oh

Yeah, I got one the Dodge six pack

Have you heard of this car before? Yeah, I think we talked about it with the max I guess

So it's it's it's a dodge to start it off with but it's got a three liter

Straight-six engine with twin counter rotating turbo chargers and it has I think what did it say?

It's got nine and a half to one compression

550 horsepower and five hundred thirty one foot pounds of torque. Why is the counter rotating? It's marketing, brother

Valences and so I looked at it. It's kind of a good-looking car. I'm not against it

It doesn't look like it looks kind of just looks like the EV one

Yeah, it looks like it's a hundred percent the EV with an actual gas engine in it. That's what it's kind of cool

I just didn't know that this car even existed. Yeah. Yeah, like I said, we're talking about the monoxide guys

I believe they brought it up really in turbo

It's a brand new engine apparently which scares me a little bit, but yeah, especially especially with that

And so genesis has the production gv 60. They announced the magma gt. They announced the gv 90 wingback concept

I want that one and everybody on the internet was like, give me give me a jenny

I need a jenny give me a jenny right now and then toyota had to come back out and be like

Settle down kids settle down simmer allow me to remind you

That we've been working on this car for 20 years

Literally, literally our son's son is working on this car right now. Um, what's it called the grg t grg t

Officially got a teased name plate whether that's gonna stick. I don't know

But the teaser video that they dropped for it was super fucking sick

So this is a car that we've been seeing in the digital camouflage for the last like literal decade. It seems like

Speculated to have v8 engine in it should be pretty sick

Speculated to have a toyota version as well as a higher end lexus trim option as well

Supposedly from what everyone's understanding meant to be the successor to the lfa

So the teaser commercial was freaking dope had like the 2000 gt rolling up

And then the lfa come flying up like the nerbert ring edition one. Yeah, so like a really cool

Version of it and then this new grg t as it was plated

Comes flying up as well. So what I saw

Was photos at the nerberg ring the notch life

With a yellow little yellow sticker on the back

And that's important that is important because that signifies

That there is some version of an electric motor on board the vehicle

I'm just kidding which is required

To be shown on the notch life, which tells me that the grg t will likely feature

A hybrid powertrain system. I want to be surprised which is nsx. Yeah

Yes, but what I think is really cool is that if they manage to keep the toyota v8 in there

Which is what everybody is saying will be in there

That means that you will get a v8 hybrid powertrain

Probably naturally aspirated which has to give you

An absolute boat fuckload of torque like that cars if if

Right

V8 low end that a boat fuckload that that was a crazy always that was your that term threw me off

I was just so excited. I couldn't put the words in the right order

But a part of me worries

I don't know if they say that you can hear the faint sound of a turbocharger too

Oh that'd be kind of so turbocharged v8 with

A hybrid system in it. It's literally every car guys. What dream

I don't know that that might be too much

I don't think I don't think people can handle that so obviously the speculation if you guys are listening in

That there's going to be a v8. I think more realistically

V6 twin turbo in the road production versions and the gt3 variant for racing will probably see a v8

I don't know. I feel like the v8's been teased for like so long and like

Yeah, that's exciting stuff though because like I said, this car has been in the works for

Long time had been getting you know teasers of it at the Nurburgring and camo and stuff like that

So it's the first time that we've got a sneak peek at what the actual name plate is going to be

The first time really seeing it without any sort of like camo on it four liter twin turbo v8

Because it's it's coming into the land cruiser

They're going to put that fucker in a land cruiser

Are you talking about something? No, I'm talking about the new toyota land cruiser v8

The company's actively working on a brand new four liter twin turbo v8

Which will replace the naturally aspirated five seven liter v8. That would be marley

The problem is I have never seen toyota

It seems it seems a little elephant is pretty crazy. That's a long time ago. We got listen

I I love toyota as said never I love toyota as much as the next guy the elephant was a long time ago

It was a very limited car very limited option. Yeah, hell expense

We got to stop using that car as the benchmark for toyota

Why because it was way too rare of a car to use as a benchmark for a toyota

But it did what it's supposed to do though. It got us to talk about it for 20 fucking years

That's what it got us to talk about. Absolutely. The audi r8 wishes it had the amount of legacy this fucking lfa car

Has had it is the maybe they got to make it sound better

The craziest thing about it is the amount of people that love the lfa

But i've never actually seen an lfa is astronomical

I saw there was one at um

The hell's the place over in all car like uh

Can't think of it rode america rattle stop rattle stop. Yeah, they had one didn't they they had like a red one over there

When we visited I can't remember

I think that was my first time ever seeing one. That's what i'm saying. Everybody loves an lfa

It is more elusive than any other car. I've ever seen before I saw I think

The the most recent time I've ever seen an lfa was during monorail car week. I seen one at chicago auto show

I think that's the only one did did lexus bring it. Yeah. Yeah, it's like one of those cars were like

It's so rare to see privately owned let alone driven

That's what i'm saying is like it is this car that I don't even know how to explain it clearly

It has this like aura

It has this mysticalness to it where it's like when people start talking about

Toyota ever doing something above their standard practice

It's like natural for almost anyone to say well, they came out with the lfa. Yeah

I'm like, yeah, but it didn't they only make 500 of them

I mean, but they actually did it though. I feel like that's better than

I don't know. I love mazda, but goddamn we've seen that fucking mazda vision car for 20 years also

And it's never become an actual fucking thing. It's at least at least Toyota was like, yeah, here it is

To be fair Toyota does also lag on their prototypes for quite a long time

And what's the difference between that anything that like lamborghini does with their like special edition ones?

But like that's we're we're using a halo car to baseline, you know, like a grt6

That's kind of my like comparison. You know what I mean? Like when I think of Toyota when you think of Toyota and you're like

What should Toyota

Hang their hat on in the last 10 years? I say Toyota runner. I say Toyota Supra

I mean, yeah

But like anytime I talk to somebody about that or I say that

That car was partnered with beer. Whatever. Why would you ever exactly the LFA was like the best car ever of all time?

And it's like no, I know that but it's not relatable to like

I think even the new car that the Toyota is making is more relatable to a gt3 car than an LFA

Because an LFA was never a race car. It was just a car. Yeah, so

I think if they could make the LC 500 fast

And make it like look that gorgeous

500 is a gorgeous car LC 500 is a gorgeous car. The only thing I have against it is the interior

I think the interior is too dated. Yeah, it does look like they just took like the rc interior and threw it in there

Like Steven's car. Yeah, it's like the same thing quite literally

It's probably the most perfect car I've ever seen before modified. Steven has a gorgeous Lexus

The interior of that and the interior of the LC 500 are the same

And I can't tell if I'm in 2008 or 2025 when I get in these cars sometimes because it's it literally looks

The same some people like that. I'm not necessarily a massive but that's always been a thing with

Japanese cars. That's why I love the Supra so much though. It kind of had these little bits and pieces that were like

Here's this old Toyota kind of thing and then here's BMW. Yeah, you could see the BMW elements the interior is like all BMW

But that that was nice. I was refreshing for a Toyota

It's like because now I have this forerunner and is quite literally if you look at because this is a 2021

If you look at a fucking 2016 2015, they're identical screens

Exactly the same and like I don't mind that that person it's rugged. It works. It's just rudimentary

It's what you need to nothing more and that's the point of it

But it seems like they kind of do it across where I remember even the first time I got to go in

But like I feel like Japanese cars in general for the most part. They're just

behind them for everything like when we got in the NSX

This thing feels like it's way older than what it is. What the hell felt like I was hopping in like an si

But yeah, generally they they kind of just stay moderate with their interiors. That's when we were um

When I was over in bozeman montana with toyota doing the kind of like the expedition for the weekend

We got to try out all the different versions their tundra their forerunner

The takoma the land cruiser

and like I get in the

Forerunner no trail hunter, which was like one of my favorites. I really liked it. It was cool

The colorway was really neat and I'm like, you're like, this is nice like it's got

Carplay it's got this like these nice little features

And like I get out and I'm talking to some of the people that were there that are like avid avid toyota off-roaders

And I'm like, what are you thinking? They're like, dude

This is the biggest

Ever I've owned toyotas for 40 years

I have never seen them make a jump from here to here and I'm like, well, what did they change? It's like

apple carplay

The new buttons the buttons are really nice and I'm like, oh my god, I can't believe that this is a thing

It flows nicely even the transitions between menus and stuff is smooth

So I like that side of things and I think that's where you can update

It's just making everything smooth and operate faster and those operating systems that are in your display should make such a huge difference

Maybe it's fancy. Dancy climate control is hiding somewhere in the ethos of their ecu system

but in a sports compact

Car like a gr corolla or a gti or something like that. I feel like those cars are

Built and engineered around giving you a sense of like driving fun

Yeah, and I think the interaction of you with the car goes past just like the pedal and the shift knob if one exists

But also all the other stuff you do with the car when you interact with it

I think when you have a touchscreen

You lose that tactile feedback when you start going into

Even when they started changing to electronically assisted to fully electric steering columns

Again, you lose a little bit of that when you start getting rev hangs you lose a little bit more of that

And I think that's when people start buying these like newer sports cars with analog systems

Like a manual transmission and people say well, I don't like it a lot of times

It's because these vehicle manufacturers are like putting

Non tactile things into tactile experiences with cars. I think that's what the z suffered with a lot
