00:26
This is Under the Hood.
00:28
Welcome to the Under the Hood Show, we are glad to have you with us.
00:31
Russ Evans is here to answer your automotive questions.
00:34
Thanks for joining us under the hood.
00:36
Shannon Nordstrom is not here to answer your automotive questions.
00:42
I'm Chris Carter here to answer your calls at 866-594-4150, it was like a ghost there,
00:50
it was like a digital ghost of Shannon there, it wasn't me, it was actually just an echo.
00:58
866-594-4150, got calls coming in, should we start right Adam?
01:06
Let's talk to Brie, you're on the Under the Hood Show, Brie, what can we do for you?
01:11
Hi there, my grandpa Ron is on here too, so I have a Jeep Wagoneer, it's a 2023, I've
01:19
been having a lot of issues with it.
01:21
I've been folding my children up in the back seat, all the lights in the dash keep coming
01:28
on, it will randomly die on us when we're driving it, it will randomly honk the horn,
01:34
lock the keys inside, even if no one is touching the keys, like it is, I took it to the dealership
01:42
and they basically said it needed new batteries and replaced the batteries in it.
01:47
Yeah, they've had a lot of problems with batteries.
01:50
My daughter has one of these vehicles as well and it's had all sorts of wacky issues and twice
01:56
I think they've replaced the batteries in it, oh it needs batteries, they put batteries in
02:00
it and then it's working and it's like, well the batteries are so bad and they've got
02:03
to keep getting replaced, you know, get some better batteries, something as goofy, but
02:11
is it working now that they put the batteries in it?
02:15
So far I've only had it back a few days, it just doesn't make sense to me that
02:19
the batteries are causing it to lock us out of the vehicle, even with our keys inside of
02:24
it, we'll step out of it and it will just lock us out, holding our children up in the third
02:30
But the batteries, it's possible in that.
02:32
Yeah, voltage is a huge issue with these things, but I would, you know, if this
02:36
thing's still under warranty, isn't it?
02:39
Yeah, well we're under our extended warranty and no, well you can still, you can still
02:48
contact Chrysler directly and you can contact the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in
02:58
the Safety Traffic Administration because this is a safety thing, say, hey it's folding
03:02
up my kids in the back seat, oh nothing worse than when kids get folded up in the
03:07
To answer your question though, we'll be right off the get, yes, battery can cause
03:13
And the other thing I was going to say is, you know, the keys in the vehicle
03:15
locking, that one you can solve yourself.
03:21
But they've had a lot of issues with these, with those batteries, I know, because of my
03:28
daughter's like, why is the battery dead and the thing's not even a year old?
03:31
I said, because there is obviously a problem with it.
03:35
And it's not like it goes dead overnight, it's dead all the time, they can't be
03:38
charged like they failed, so it's funny, you know, we've got our partner over
03:44
at Clarios with Optima batteries, we're going to be talking to them after our show.
03:48
We're going to be doing an interview with them talking about their new battery shop
03:53
on YouTube channel and stuff, and if you're wondering about batteries and what
03:57
makes them go and what makes them go dead, that's the place to go.
04:02
But to answer Breeze's question a little bit further on it, that battery nowadays.
04:05
There's two, this is a stop-start battery, there's a main vehicle battery and they
04:09
both have to be working.
04:10
Nowadays, those are in the circuit of the vehicle.
04:14
The battery is a working part of the electrical system.
04:18
So if you do have a bad battery, all sorts of weird things can happen, like you
04:26
Why am I not my fingers numb?
04:27
That's got nothing to do with my heart.
04:30
So does that help you out there, Bree, a little bit at least?
04:33
Yeah, it makes sense.
04:36
That is, so you're already in the extended warranty after a couple of
04:41
Do you have anything else on it?
04:45
It's just that when I took it in there, they were like, oh, well, now you're in your
04:51
extended warranty, which thankfully my husband bought the extended warranty, but of course
04:57
it covered all the work they did except for the batteries.
05:01
They don't cover batteries because they consider them like gasoline.
05:04
It's a wear item, a usage item.
05:06
I would not go with a factory battery in that.
05:09
I would go with the best aftermarket battery you can find for that vehicle.
05:16
Is that, that's not going to fix, I mean, if they're having issues with it, you could
05:23
If it's the batteries is the problem.
05:26
By all means, you got that fixed.
05:27
Put the batteries in it.
05:28
If it's working, you're good to go.
05:31
There could be other things going on electrically with that.
05:33
There could be something on that CAN bus system.
05:35
You could have a body control module, failing an engine computer.
05:38
Any one of the modules could be shorted causing this issue, causing it to get wacky, but you
05:41
got so many things going on.
05:43
It could be battery power.
05:46
And we've talked about it before.
05:48
Sometimes batteries go bad no matter what.
05:52
Oh, brand new batteries.
05:54
Brand new or a week old or a month old, they sometimes just don't go.
05:58
You might be okay now.
06:00
Thanks for the call.
06:05
Let's go to Idaho and talk to Alan.
06:07
We're on the end of the hood show.
06:08
Alan, what can we do for you?
06:10
So I got a 2017 Dodge Ram, three quarter ton diesel.
06:18
And I had depth on it and the depth, it was covering up all my smoke issues.
06:26
And anyways, one of my injectors in bad and blew up my six cylinder up to that.
06:32
So I'm trying to decide what, I mean, can they just ream that cylinder?
06:37
Is it worth it or is it better just to go find a new block?
06:44
Or I do have a neighbor that has a 2010 motor.
06:48
I wondered if it was similar or if it, like, are they compatible or?
06:54
No, those would be different.
06:57
It depends on how bad the cylinder is.
06:59
If the cylinder is scored horribly, it's going to have to be bored and you can't
07:05
bore just one cylinder.
07:06
It's not a good idea.
07:07
You need to bore all six, hone them to fit the rings and the pistons and replace the pistons
07:15
And you could do that.
07:16
I mean, it's, it's not the end of the world.
07:17
If you don't have an engine full of metal, like where you had a rod go out or something,
07:21
you still got good rods and everything.
07:23
You could put a new set of standard, you know, if it's got standard bearings in,
07:27
throw a new set of bearings in it, you wouldn't have to turn everything, bore it out,
07:31
put new pistons in it.
07:32
You're, you're good to go.
07:33
And you, you could even make some updates to the engine while you got it apart, you know,
07:39
not necessarily have to go crazy in on the whole thing, but you're definitely going to have
07:45
to, if the one cylinder is just scratched a little bit, then they might be able to put
07:49
a piston in it and hone it.
07:51
You won't know until you tear it down in a mechanic and a machine shop measures and
07:55
verifies those things.
07:59
I mean, you inject or go out, it'll, it'll score the cylinder, but sometimes
08:02
it just trashes the piston.
08:05
What's the difference in price between the, the two options there?
08:12
If you can get by with just honing it and putting one piston in it, because there's no damage
08:16
to that cylinder, then you're, you're saving thousands of dollars versus the other way.
08:22
Cause I think, you know, a rebuild three levels here.
08:25
If you pull that engine out and buy, you know, a used engine could let's just say
08:28
cost you six to $9,000 dependent on the miles, just for the engine, a, you know, honing one
08:38
cylinder and this is on the bench, cause you still got lots of 20 hours, 25 hours, 29
08:44
whatever it is to pull that engine with whatever the shop's going to get, but with it on
08:49
the bench, if you're doing just one cylinder versus boring all four, four times the
08:56
You know, cause you got, you got per cylinder to bore it, but you got the same tear down.
09:00
You got to tear the whole thing down either way.
09:03
He's going to save thousands, but it's still going to cost thousands.
09:09
At the very minimum, you lose one cylinder when you lose an injector, you, you are
09:12
going to, and you're going to have to replace, you need to replace all six injectors.
09:15
Cause if you had one fail, guess what?
09:17
There's others getting ready to fail.
09:19
So even if he has them look at it and they say it's shot, even if he decided
09:24
to throw the truck in the river, he's still going to be thousands in to, for the shop to
09:30
Cause they got to pull it out to diagnose it.
09:33
So this is a 17 truck.
09:35
You know, this is worth a ton of money for sure.
09:37
If you spend 15 grand and put an engine in it, even a little more than that, you
09:44
still, you still can't go buy that truck running off a lot with a new motor or a good
09:52
I mean they're expensive.
09:53
Everything's really expensive.
09:54
So yeah, you want to save money.
09:57
You might look at a certified used option.
10:00
Injectors are very important.
10:01
We suggest to people when you're putting a diesel engine in it, it's very important.
10:04
Put new injectors in it.
10:06
You know, if the turbo fails, okay, you lose boost and starts burning oil.
10:09
If an injector fails, you can trash a cylinder super fast.
10:13
Does that help you out there, Alan?
10:19
So the 2010 motor my buddy has is not, they don't, they're not compatible.
10:25
I don't think that block is compatible with the block you have.
10:29
You got to run all the numbers and see on there.
10:31
I mean, there's external stuff that definitely make them not compatible.
10:34
But anytime, you know, the 24 valves and the 12 valves, a lot of them are interchangeable
10:39
with themselves, not 12 for a 24, but a 24, that whole system and a 12, that
10:44
A lot of those were interchangeable, but there are certain things with the electronics
10:47
on the new ones that are not interchangeable.
10:49
So you've got to look that up to find out for sure on your block casting.
10:52
But you don't think so.
10:53
I don't think it is.
10:54
I really don't think it is.
10:55
Alan, thanks very much for the call.
10:58
866-594-4150, that's the number to reach us here at the end of the hood
11:04
866-594-4150, let's talk to Ryan, you're on the end of the hood
11:11
Ryan, what can we do for you?
11:14
I've got a 2020 Jeep Gladiator that has a 6-4 hemi in it.
11:22
It was built by Rubitrux in North Carolina.
11:26
And it calls for 040 oil.
11:28
I want your guys' opinion on 040 oil.
11:30
I do live in South Dakota, so it is cold, but I'm just curious on 040 and it's hard
11:37
You've got to special order it and everything.
11:40
I'm going to take a shot at this one, Ryan.
11:42
I'll ask Russ here and I'll see if I can nail this one.
11:47
That's it, because if they say to, you don't want to mess that up.
11:53
That's what you want.
11:55
GM was changing oil brands or oil types to cover up a problem they had with the 6-2.
12:04
The fix is to change the engine, period.
12:07
They built it wrong, you need to ... that's not going to help it.
12:11
But it's just a band aid to get you by to kind of slow down the problem so that they
12:17
can get some engines built so they can take care of people, which they've been doing unless
12:21
you're over 100,000 miles, then I've got a couple customers that are over 100,000 miles
12:26
and they're less than two years old in the truck and they are.
12:29
I was just going to say, human.
12:30
I bet they're not human.
12:32
You made it 100,000 miles, it's like on a truck that's a year and a half old.
12:38
That's what they're saying.
12:39
But yeah, you're changing that viscosity.
12:42
That's what the engine is designed for, works well on that.
12:47
If the engine's built correctly, those 6-4s were great engines.
12:52
They've been built well.
12:55
Lots of people with a couple 100,000 miles or more on them already with that weight
12:58
oil and they're having no problems with them.
13:00
It's expensive, but yeah, it's working well.
13:04
So I wouldn't go change that around.
13:08
I was just kind of curious because you read stuff on, you know, online, everybody's running
13:12
different stuff and this and this and I just thought I'd talk to the pros.
13:15
If you, you know, if you, if you had a whole forum at some point.
13:20
I think you meant me.
13:25
If you look and you see a whole forum, a reputable one, and you've got every single
13:31
person on there agreeing the same saying, oh yeah, we're running, you know, 5W40.
13:37
That's exactly what we're running.
13:38
And they say, oh, we've all been running it for 200,000 miles.
13:41
I ran it since it was brand new.
13:43
Then I start taking that with a grain of salt and like, all right, I'll think about
13:48
it because we've got real world people, but you will always find somebody.
13:52
I bet if you go to Google right now and type in running 10W30 in my 6.4 Hemi, you're
13:59
going to find people.
14:00
Oh, I run that all the time.
14:02
You know, you can find, you can find all sorts of stuff.
14:07
It's like, type in why is broccoli bad for you?
14:10
Why is air bad for you?
14:11
Why is eating your vegetables bad for you?
14:14
I mean, you will find all the bad stuff you want, but usually the factory, if they have
14:21
a problem with it, they'll get it changed within the couple of years.
14:25
If they know that their oil weight has been an issue, it will be changed.
14:28
This has been history.
14:29
We have seen this on many vehicles where the manufacturer says, nope, this didn't
14:34
We're changing our viscosity to something else.
14:38
That's why we don't put it in the owner's manual anymore.
14:40
That gives them leeway to change it on the fly without it being in print.
14:45
You know, we've talked about that in a bad way before.
14:49
I mean, or we've questioned, you know, that they don't put it in the manual anymore
14:53
and that screws some people up.
14:54
They put it in as an addition.
14:56
I couldn't find it for my pressure washer.
14:58
But sometimes that's a good thing because then it's not in there wrong.
15:02
They find out something later and they can, they can fix it one way or another.
15:06
And a lot of it has to do with use, because you'll find like Honda motors that you see
15:12
on almost every piece of power equipment, whether it's a pressure washer, a go kart,
15:17
lawnmower, lawnmower, a wood log split or whatever it is, they will often change
15:22
the oil viscosity slightly for the use that it's intended for.
15:27
The temperature, the load that's on it, all those things.
15:31
If it's a lighter load, they can get by with a lighter oil and it has something
15:35
to run smoother, less wear, starts easier in the cold.
15:39
So you'll see that with vehicles, too.
15:47
I as as an owner of a new vehicle to me, I've done some looking at just basic
15:54
I'm like, I wonder if that, and I look it up on the internet and I'll get a forum.
15:59
I can't believe how much and mine's just a normal car.
16:05
I'm just asking the waste of time that is on those forums and the bad info that is
16:14
And I don't mean as a whole, but someone will say, I have this.
16:19
That first person says, yes.
16:20
The second person says, no way.
16:22
Third person says, you guys are jerks.
16:24
You probably voted for X.
16:26
And then they start arguing with each other.
16:28
It is so much noise.
16:30
It's almost unusable.
16:32
How do you, how do you find out?
16:35
How do you look as mechanics?
16:36
It makes it really difficult to what's even worse is when you think, okay, I
16:43
Let's see if anybody else has had it.
16:45
And when you go to the internet and you type it in 50 different ways and no
16:49
one has had that issue, you're on your own, buddy.
16:54
They haven't even heard of it.
16:56
That would be better than what you sometimes find.
16:59
We're looking for something that's like on a car that's six or seven years old.
17:03
You should have heard of it by now if it's pretty common.
17:06
And you get the people come in and they think they're mechanics and say, oh,
17:09
everybody's having this problem.
17:11
Well, then why doesn't it show up on the internet?
17:13
If everybody's having it, no, not everybody's having it.
17:18
And then sometimes they'll say, oh, well, actually it does that.
17:24
That's a whole different thing.
17:25
I just spent all this time looking for something else or, oh,
17:31
it hasn't done it in a month.
17:33
Eight, six, six, five, nine, four, four, one, five.
17:36
Oh, I told you guys, I think it was off the air about the lawnmower.
17:41
I saw the other day a kid was riding and it was going up and down.
17:45
And it was, it was, I have a new one.
17:47
I have a new issue.
17:49
I have a new neighbor, no, no issues, but their lawnmower is
17:54
idled so high that it sounds like an air pressure or a pressure
18:00
washer or a weed whip on max, you know, when you gun up the throttle.
18:07
This lawnmower runs at one speed and it is.
18:11
So, I mean, I've looked to see if there's a something out there
18:15
just running full speed and it's just a normal lawnmower
18:19
that is so amped up that it just, the whole house, the dog
18:23
is bouncing around.
18:25
My wife's like, what is that noise?
18:27
I can see what he's doing.
18:28
I'm like, holy moly, that thing is so idled up.
18:31
It just is so, it's very tense.
18:34
It feels like any minute it's just going to explode.
18:37
And it will eventually, if it's not governed and working
18:41
like it's supposed to, it's supposed to be, I mean, they make
18:44
them to run at a certain, they make the blades to cut at a
18:46
certain RPM, you know?
18:48
Oh, I wonder, I bet it cuts great.
18:51
Unless you have to, he probably has to push it to keep it
18:53
on the ground because it's going so fast, it's just blowing
18:57
It's just lifting up like a helicopter.
18:58
Oh, can you imagine?
19:00
This thing sounds like it, man.
19:02
It is, it is so high idled.
19:04
I wonder how much it would take because they have those
19:06
suction blades that lift, pull the grass up and throw it.
19:11
I wonder if you had one of those, if you put like
19:13
a propeller blade on a lawnmower.
19:16
Do you remember when we were younger, right?
19:18
I think this was, they had the lawn boys that didn't
19:23
Do you remember those?
19:24
It was like it, it would float around.
19:27
I don't remember that.
19:28
Boy, I should remember that.
19:29
I wonder if that's just a dream I had once.
19:33
But I think I remember one that didn't have wheels
19:36
and it was supposed to float itself over your grass.
19:39
And I remember seeing it and going, well, that
19:41
seems like a terrible idea.
19:43
Could have been something that was in popular mechanics
19:45
I read a lot of those.
19:47
That, I've been reading it lately.
19:49
That's, uh, read the old ones, go online.
19:52
There are some crazy stuff on there.

23:51
And there's how many podcasts are
23:54
up available right now?
23:58
Four or five hundred?
24:00
Maybe eight hundred.
24:01
I think we're up to eight hundred
24:02
or not. I think I changed that
24:03
around, but there's quite a few.
24:05
Let's go to Minnesota and talk to
24:06
Daryl. You're on the end of the
24:07
hood show. Daryl, what can we do for
24:11
Yeah, I've got a 2002 Buick
24:12
LeSaver, 3,800 engine.
24:14
There's one here in the pipe that
24:16
goes with the power steering that
24:18
goes around up to the front and
24:21
I think it's been rubbing on the
24:22
sway bar, but I don't think.
24:26
Put it kind of like a rubber
24:28
around it or something, a rubber
24:29
there or something.
24:31
They still sell it.
24:31
It's a it's a power steering oil
24:35
It doesn't really look like a cooler
24:36
because there's no fins on it.
24:37
It's just a big long loop of
24:38
metal and it wears through on the
24:40
Grand Prix. It'll Sabres, the Park
24:42
Avenues, the Regals, all of those
24:44
cars, Monte Carlos.
24:46
Huge problem with those.
24:48
You could just replace it with a
24:49
power steering hose, but
24:53
the fluid will wear out faster.
24:55
It'll get hotter. It'll burn in
24:58
It's usually fairly good.
24:59
If you get a really hot climate,
25:00
you can get that fluid pretty
25:02
burnt, cause damage to the rack
25:04
from overheating damage to the
25:05
power steering pump.
25:07
The best thing to do is just get
25:09
another cooler loop for it.
25:10
I want to say they're less than
25:12
200 bucks. It might be even less
25:14
than 100 bucks for that loop, but
25:16
they call it a power steering
25:21
It's both a hose and a cooler.
25:24
Yeah, after Marko was just
25:26
good as you get, like,
25:28
I'll be using them.
25:29
Yeah, any auto parts store is
25:33
We've put on a number of mev's.
25:34
We've replaced lines.
25:36
We look up power steering hose
25:37
for the Sabres and it'll say
25:39
pressure hose from pump to rack.
25:41
It'll say return hose from rack
25:43
to cooler, cooler line
25:45
and then from cooler to
25:48
pump, you know, things like that.
25:49
So it's you tell them you want
25:51
the big cooler loop on the power
25:52
steering line and they'll show a
25:54
picture of it. It goes up and
25:55
makes like a giant L shape and
25:58
But we've replaced a number of them
25:59
over the years that were leaking.
26:01
They rub through on the sway bar.
26:02
If they're in the wrong position,
26:04
they'll rub through on bolts
26:05
and nuts and body mounts and all
26:08
Any place on that line, you can
26:10
see that's contacting another
26:11
piece of metal and it looks like
26:13
it's going to rub. We cut a piece
26:14
of fuel line to slip over it, to
26:16
protect it, keep it from rubbing
26:18
Daryl, thanks very much for the
26:21
That seems pretty straightforward.
26:23
It's not too bad at all.
26:25
And I would have guessed.
26:26
He's gone now and we can't, but
26:28
I would have guessed it was either
26:37
Let's go to George and talk to Bob.
26:39
You're on the end of the Hood
26:40
Show. Bob, what can we do for
26:42
My wife bought a 2007
26:44
Honda Accord with a couple of
26:46
thousand miles, a couple of
26:48
hundred thousand miles on it.
26:51
We got new tires and it has
26:54
a vibration in the front end as
26:56
if the tires are either out of
26:58
round or out of balance.
27:02
It's from a big-box
27:05
So I'm having trouble getting
27:10
I think they are going to be
27:12
able to melt the tires
27:15
Notice that the tires are
27:17
either out of round or out
27:21
It's from a big box store.
27:24
It's an out-of-round wheel if
27:26
that's the problem.
27:32
I have my doubts about how
27:34
their balances are being
27:36
proved or zeroed, we'll
27:40
How often should that be done
27:46
times it'll tell you
27:48
the new ones are automatic
27:50
and they'll tell you when it
27:52
tells me, hey, it's time for a
27:54
recalibration. We're seeing
27:56
discrepancies between
28:00
We know what the original one was
28:02
when you calibrated it and now
28:04
it's off. So they're pretty smart.
28:06
They know what the original
28:08
parameters were and they know
28:10
what it is today. They know if
28:12
it's been moved for cleaning
28:14
or whatever. And it's safe to
28:16
assume that any big-box store
28:18
is going to have a pretty
28:20
big-box. They usually don't keep
28:22
them very long, five, six years
28:24
and they're getting new equipment
28:26
from what I've seen anyways, Costco
28:28
and those places I see do that
28:30
often. But I just had one
28:32
the other day. They
28:34
put new tires on and they shook
28:36
and they brought them back twice
28:38
and they said, well, they said they
28:40
balanced them and they're just fine.
28:42
There's nothing wrong with the tire.
28:44
And I said, go back again
28:46
and tell them, look, this
28:48
when you go on the road and they
28:50
said, well, it's a suspension. It's out of alignment.
28:52
It's like, no, alignment won't cause
28:54
a shake. This is a vibration.
28:56
I said, when the car's in the air
29:00
and see if the wheel is turning
29:02
100% round or if it's bent
29:04
and hopping up and down or side to
29:06
side and then look at the tire
29:08
and sure enough when they just spun it
29:10
by hand and the wheel was 100%
29:12
perfectly smooth. But the
29:14
tire tread was moving up and down
29:16
almost a quarter inch. So you can
29:20
or a square tire. You could balance
29:22
it. It would spin on the balance
29:24
or just fine. But you put it on the road, it's going to
29:26
hop up and down on that surface. So it has
29:28
to be smooth. A bent wheel will cause
29:30
that. A tire that has
29:32
a broken belt or one that's just made poorly
29:34
will do that as well. And occasionally you'll get
29:36
a tire that is off.
29:38
Sometimes you'll get a series of them if you
29:40
get the serial numbers right in a row that are off
29:42
as well. That is rare.
29:44
We've only had that happen a couple times in
29:46
probably 30 some years of putting
29:48
tires on. But I have had
29:50
one tire that was no
29:52
good or one tire that
29:54
I was able to take back several
29:56
times. I've had them where I was able to dismount it
29:58
turn it around a little bit, put it
30:00
back on, air it up and then it was fine.
30:02
But for whatever reason it just
30:04
did not seat perfectly on the
30:06
beat of that wheel and it was off
30:08
and gave me a hopping tire.
30:10
They shouldn't hop. You know, wheel bearing
30:12
it will make noise.
30:14
It will be loose and it can
30:16
cause some vibration.
30:18
Things they can see if they're standing at the front
30:20
of the car and they grab a hold of the wheel and it's tight
30:22
it's not flopping around
30:24
they're good there. The only other thing that
30:26
causes that vibration other than an axle.
30:28
You know an axle shaft could do it too
30:30
if that axle shaft is out around and that's
30:32
a car that can, you can have some
30:34
axle but those do it on acceleration.
30:36
When you're under load
30:38
accelerating they'll vibrate or
30:40
if they're taking a turn around a clover leaf
30:46
55-60 miles an hour
30:48
with the cruise on if it's vibrating
30:50
that usually translates to a
30:54
or a wheel bent issue.
30:58
I know what you're saying though
31:00
at any place it's hard to get
31:02
if they're doing just tires mainly
31:04
it's hard to get them to
31:06
hop in and go for a drive
31:08
and do more diagnostics.
31:12
get it in you've got a guy trained just to
31:14
put a tire on take a tire off and balance it
31:16
that's it they're not trained to find out
31:18
what's wrong when there is a problem.
31:20
So what's Bob's next step?
31:22
He's going to have to get it in there
31:26
this thing did not do this before you put
31:28
tires on it so now that the tires are on it
31:30
let's put it on the hoist
31:32
let's spin the tire you don't even have to take it off
31:34
the car let's just spin it and see if it's straight
31:36
and if it go hops up and down and the
31:38
wheel doesn't you got a tire problem you're going
31:40
to have to figure that out and get a different
31:42
tire on there get it balanced whatever it takes
31:44
to make that tire go around in a circle
31:46
without hopping up and down can you switch
31:48
them from the back you could try to switch
31:50
the position and see if your vibration
31:52
changes to a different area
31:54
but you definitely want to get it up
31:56
up off the ground turn that tire
31:58
and see if the tread hops up and down
32:00
if it hopping up and down the car's
32:02
going to hop up and down.
32:04
Does that help you out at all Bob?
32:06
Yes it does but I'm wondering
32:08
also are the tires flat
32:10
spotted if they have
32:12
to sit for an hour before it goes into the
32:14
tire shop could the tires be flat
32:20
you know a tire if you
32:22
store brand new tires
32:24
without air and without a load
32:26
on they can sit there
32:28
upright for a long time they'll be fine
32:32
not going to get flat spot unless that car sits
32:34
in storage through a lot of temperature changes
32:36
for a very long time typically
32:38
four or five months in one spot
32:40
and then a lot of times it'll come out of it when you start
32:42
driving it but it's a
32:44
car stored on the ground in one position
32:46
through a winter where it's hot it's cold
32:48
it's hot cold it can get a
32:50
an indentation in that tire in that one spot
32:52
if it doesn't have the right air pressure
32:54
usually just the right air pressure is
32:56
enough to overcome that issue.
32:58
If you come down pit lane a little too fast
33:00
sometimes you can flat spot if you're just getting fuel.
33:06
rough one because yeah like you said
33:08
and like we were talking about with the
33:10
equipment usually new equipment because
33:14
it's not people who have a bunch of years experience
33:16
doing it it's someone who's trained to do that thing which is great
33:18
keeps your cost down and
33:20
you get some good tires
33:22
at a decent price but it
33:24
if there's a little bit of an issue they might
33:32
that's a bummer 866
33:36
50 let's talk to John you're on the
33:38
end of the hood show John what can we do for you
33:42
do all the time I called once
33:50
vapor locking and I thought about the
33:54
did put a one inch in so block
33:56
if you call it whatever I call it you know
33:58
underneath the carburetor
34:00
it seemed to make a little bit of an effort
34:02
but it's still vapor lock so a day
34:04
like yesterday and today it'll vapor lock
34:08
I don't know I suppose about the only thing I
34:10
do is put it in the fuel injection system or what
34:16
a low pressure regulator at the carburetor
34:18
and put a low pressure fuel pump
34:22
that way you're pressurizing the fuel
34:24
just a couple pounds
34:26
three four at the most
34:28
and returning it back to the tank
34:30
and it's circulating
34:32
it more often because you're
34:34
basically circulating it none right now
34:36
but it would circulate it keep the fuel cooler
34:38
and it also keeps it under pressure
34:40
which keeps the vapor lock down just
34:42
like a radiator cap keeps
34:44
your engine under pressure keeps
34:48
and you need to drop that fuel
34:50
but if the if the boiling the vapor
34:52
lock is coming the vapor
34:54
boil off is coming from inside
34:56
of the carburetor that's a
34:58
that's a problem because it gets so hot
35:00
you wouldn't know until
35:04
I can drive it like from
35:06
you know I'm like 130 miles
35:08
from Sioux Falls I can drive from here to Sioux Falls
35:10
go through the tunnels like pipe store
35:12
what not and then it's fine however
35:14
I started off at a party like
35:16
when you get an ice cream cone come back out
35:20
start but don't want to run very well
35:22
and then you play the gear and it dies
35:24
and you have a heck of a time get going
35:26
you know once you get going then it's just fine
35:30
that sure sounds like it's a carburetor that's hot
35:32
that's causing that issue
35:34
so it's getting it's getting cooler fuel coming
35:36
up to it and then it cools off so it
35:38
could be that it's and
35:40
you put a block in there that kept it cooler
35:42
that could be an issue with it too
35:44
there's there's many different things to try
35:46
for those kind of things that
35:48
you just got to you got to narrow it down narrow it down
35:52
you know find out if it's a fuel fuel
35:54
pressure thing you could try the the fuel pressure
35:56
and the return to the tank as well too
35:58
that's one thing that's that
36:00
a lot of people do on those those older
36:02
ones like that and a non
36:04
ethanol fuel in that because when you got a heat
36:06
problem like that you don't have
36:08
pressure like you do with fuel injection
36:10
so you need to use a non ethanol
36:12
fuel only that's my only
36:14
my only experience with vapor lock
36:20
pickup and he used to carry
36:24
yeah jug of water like a
36:28
sip and cooler and he would just
36:30
when it would die he'd go under the hood and
36:32
pour a little water on it and off we'd go
36:34
that's not the best way to handle it though
36:36
or it's gets you there
36:38
if it's yeah part time
36:40
people done that with Ford new Ford
36:42
diesels with the overheating
36:46
that sounds worse that sounds more
36:48
frustrating it is John thanks very much
36:50
for the call good luck 866
36:56
messages about hover Morris there
36:58
they're they're all over they're
37:00
common this one this
37:04
sounds like it would be
37:06
it would just cut I
37:08
I'd not pay attention and lose track
37:12
this one is an 11 inch
37:16
11 inch cutting and it runs at
37:18
7000 the the blades
37:22
so it's perfect for like the backyard of
37:24
apartment where you have like a
37:26
3 by 5 piece of grass 11 inches
37:28
there's some big giant ones too there's some
37:30
big they're they're all they're
37:32
they're common they're fine
37:34
I'm scared just thinking about
37:40
so let's go to Maine and talk to Keegan
37:42
you're on the end of the hood show Keegan what can we do for you
37:46
thank you for taking my call once again
37:48
you bet I appreciate it
37:50
so today I'm working on a 2009 Chevy Silverado
37:56
it has a no start no crank condition
37:58
I already set the starter
38:00
looks like the positive cable
38:02
comes in the battery spine no voltage drop
38:04
and the signal wire is getting
38:06
no 12 volts when the key is
38:08
turned so I've backtracked it
38:14
main ground the black and gray
38:16
straight wire coming from the ECM I'm getting 7
38:20
which seems really high to me I want to verify
38:22
that that's not good that's not good
38:24
what happens if you jump the starter
38:26
relay in the box under the hood does it crank
38:28
I didn't try jumping
38:30
because it has that signal wire where
38:32
I can't take a screwdriver to it
38:34
and bypass so I'm setting it
38:36
back probe to the 12 volt
38:38
and I'm getting no 12 volts at all
38:40
nothing's powering that
38:42
when I backtrack you see the relay
38:44
and then you have possibility and zero ohms
38:46
back to the relay it doesn't seem to be a break in the wiring
38:48
it's just not getting power
38:50
7 is too high pull that fuse box out on the
38:52
driver's side and turn it over and look at the bottom
38:54
see if it's corroded and make sure all the connectors are
38:56
seated properly because we see that a lot
38:58
with those they loosen up
39:02
see that actually I'm looking at it right now
39:04
so the fuse box I think seems nice and clean
39:06
I don't see corrosion
39:08
could be internally
39:10
I don't know where that
39:12
that ground actually connects on the
39:14
brain where is that
39:16
at I don't know where that actually
39:18
that's on the ECM ground
39:20
looking at the wiring diagram
39:22
it's still on me should be on the back of the block
39:26
by the transmission that's where the grounds are
39:30
back of the engine the back of the block
39:32
so I should check that
39:34
see why I'm getting high resistance
39:36
there you go Keegan good luck
39:38
thanks very much for the call
39:44
let's go to Arizona and talk to Paul
39:46
you're on the end of the hood show Paul what can we do for you
39:50
good talk to you guys
39:52
I listen to you all the time on Saturday and I just happen to be home
39:54
off an elk hunt here that I didn't
39:56
get my call but anyway
39:58
that's neither here nor there
40:00
a little discuss this anyway I got a
40:08
and I got a leak out of the rear
40:14
cold and took a shaft
40:16
and I was wondering if there was any
40:18
sealant or anything I might add to the
40:22
now on that one you need to pull the shaft out
40:24
and put a new seal in it but while it's out
40:26
you also want to check the bushing on the back
40:30
does this one have a slide in
40:32
drive shaft or does it have a bolt
40:34
on drive shaft at the back of the case
40:42
on the slide in ones
40:44
you're going to want to pull it out, slide it out
40:46
look at the drive shaft yoke to make sure it doesn't
40:48
have any grooves in it or a spot that's
40:50
worn low if it does you got to replace
40:52
that yoke or the whole shaft
40:54
if that's good then check
40:56
and slide it in there
40:58
without the seal in it see if it
41:00
has a lot of play up and down if it does
41:02
you'll have to have a new bushing put in the end of that
41:04
inserted to keep it from flopping around
41:06
and then put a new seal in it but there's
41:08
nothing you can add to it to try to
41:10
fix it there's a lot of
41:12
oil system stop leaks and stuff like
41:14
that that are made out there
41:16
Justice Brothers makes a good one but it's made
41:18
to condition the seal
41:24
from new it's not going to fix it now
41:26
if you've got a worn shaft or you've got
41:28
a wear in the bushing that is definitely
41:30
not going to fix that you have to replace both the
41:32
hard parts first before a seal is going to seal it
41:34
but it's unfortunately
41:36
nothing you can do quick but
41:38
you block the wheels and then you can take that
41:40
drive shaft out and replace that seal pretty easily
41:42
it just taps in there
41:44
does that help you out there Paul
41:48
you got another shot at the
41:50
you got another shot at the elk or is your
41:54
no no I'm I can go out this afternoon
41:58
we had a bunch of rain and the
42:00
puddles are all over and they're
42:02
drinking out of the puddles so it's just
42:04
random or to have to grab in there
42:08
no set pattern on them any
42:12
well good luck on both
42:14
eight six six five nine four
42:18
let's talk to Roger you're on the end of the hood show
42:20
Roger what can we do for you
42:22
yeah I'm working on
42:28
friend asked me to do kind of a
42:30
100,000 mile maintenance thing on it
42:32
one of them things I was going to
42:38
and I'm a little confused because
42:40
on the top of the cap you guys
42:42
probably answered this many times already
42:44
but on the top of the cap
42:46
it says use only dot three or dot
42:50
they always thought that
42:52
if you use three you use three if you use
42:54
four use four and I don't
42:56
know what's in there so
42:58
does it matter what I use
43:00
no I mean if it's saying use either
43:02
one you're fine if you
43:04
have one that wants only
43:06
one and you put the wrong
43:08
kind in it that's an issue
43:10
they're not the seals aren't compatible with both
43:12
but if you've got one that has seals compatible
43:14
with both you're fine you could have both in there
43:16
yeah otherwise when you go to
43:18
a shop they wouldn't know
43:20
and you'd destroy it so
43:22
if the factory said use dot
43:24
three or dot four but not both
43:26
do not mix then you'd have a problem
43:28
and they don't say that
43:30
gotcha okay perfect
43:32
thanks for a double check
43:34
Roger thanks very much for the call good luck do they taste the same
43:38
I know what it tastes like
43:40
I'm not sure maybe I probably tasted the four
43:42
you never know when it's
43:44
running down on your face
43:48
I know on some things you can
43:50
you can tell by looking at it
43:52
obviously what it is
43:54
but in this case you can't tell
43:58
that's the thing so there are
44:00
certain things that are colored
44:02
our partner at peak cooling
44:04
they make all makes
44:06
all model antifreeze they make
44:08
specific colors you know cause some are
44:10
purple some are blue some are red and that's great
44:12
it's great that they do that you know
44:14
that you're pouring in what the factory
44:16
had and that's important
44:18
for a company to do that there are other things
44:20
like brake fluid any brand
44:24
all one color as far as
44:26
I know I've only seen clear brake fluid
44:28
and that's great should be clean and clear if it's turning
44:30
black it needs to be flushed
44:32
metals build up in their acids
44:34
build up it can eat up components
44:36
especially in ABS if you've got
44:40
transmission fluid could be clear
44:45
those are the only two colors I've seen
44:51
front rear differential whatever
44:53
transfer case that could be blue
44:55
if it's like an auto track or it could be
44:57
a red if it's a transmission fluid
45:01
it could be light tan
45:03
other gear oils clear almost in those
45:05
but most of them now are going to be a
45:07
transmission fluid type
45:09
color depending on what they put in there
45:12
see what else we got there
45:14
for fluids power steering fluid
45:16
it's either going to be red like a transmission fluid
45:18
because that's what it is or it's going to be
45:20
like a clear color like a brake fluid
45:22
and that can be mixed up
45:24
and one the other day
45:26
a good one and we notice it quick
45:29
car was overheating
45:31
so we said why is this thing overheating
45:33
it was in for something else didn't even touch
45:37
I took the cap off to fill it
45:39
and some spilled on the ground
45:41
I'll guess it was probably
45:43
a half a gallon that spilled on the ground
45:45
but I put almost two gallons
45:47
in to fill this thing up and then it started working
45:49
but I noticed it was purple
45:51
an odd color purple and it was not the purple
45:53
for this Chrysler vehicle and it smelled funny
45:55
it smelled like soap
45:59
I got the fluid in there got it topped off
46:03
30 minutes 40 minutes
46:05
but it was fine works great now
46:07
then when I got back
46:09
I was talking to the guy and he said what was that all it needed
46:11
was to top it off how low was it
46:13
I was like almost two gallons and I said
46:15
whatever's on the ground that I hadn't cleaned up yet
46:17
is what where to go
46:19
anaphrase doesn't evaporate
46:21
anaphrase doesn't evaporate
46:23
washer fluid evaporates
46:25
somebody had put the purple bug
46:27
remover washer fluid
46:33
we see anaphrase in
46:35
washer fluid all the time
46:39
anaphrase and they'll pour it in purple red
46:45
in the radiator it wasn't in an overflow tank
46:47
I mean it was in the radiator
46:49
so they had they went to some links
46:51
to get that in there what's the worst
46:53
thing you've ever accidentally
46:57
gasoline is not good
46:59
yeah that's the worst one
47:01
that's probably the worst one because it burns
47:03
what's the most common one
47:09
power steering fluid engine oil is underneath trying to find a leak
47:11
and it's running right in your mouth
47:17
that'll do it for the under the hood show
