to the Bring a Trailer podcast. Alex
Porter coming to you at Car Week from
Moore Imports in Monterey. So excited to
be here. We looked around a little bit
this morning. What an amazing facility.
Want to dive into it. I'm joined by Adam
Moore, owner and son of Al Moore,
founder. Adam, thanks for having us.
>> Thank you. Yeah. No, it's great to be
here. It's great to have bring a trailer
here. It's just um it's all good stuff.
Fantastic. Uh, and also joined by Steve
Kitrol. Steve, we've known each other
for a while. Uh, you've worked at
various places. And you, general
manager, head of sales, what what do you
call yourself around here? Marketing.
You're everything.
>> Yeah, sales director. And yeah, I'm kind
of a jack of all trades. It's always
been my strength. And u, you know, it's
all hands- on deck around here.
>> Awesome. Well, thanks guys for having
us. Uh, Adam, I thought we'd start by
talking a little bit about the business.
41 years for more imports. All right.
>> That's no joke in in the dealership
business. We were talking about a little
bit before we started a little bit. Can
you give us a little bit of history?
>> A lot of ups and downs. Uh you know uh
started always out as a um
>> uh with Italian car interest with my
dad. That was his his focus and um as it
kind of morphed through the years, it
kind of became um a little bit more of a
Porsche focused business. And um
>> those were his interests. That's kind of
>> No, no, it was more more his was Italian
cars. Okay. Right. And that was always
it. And then as that market changed to
say the least in the late 80s, early
90s, then it the business morphed again.
And then uh I really kind of started
more around 07 and kind of really came
in with um kind of what more what we're
dealing with today uh to some degree.
>> Yeah. Broader, more little. Yeah. Right.
when the Ferrari market was kind of
going down, there really wasn't a lot of
um uh you know, it really wasn't able to
to move too much away from it and that
that market was going great when it was
going up, but when it wasn't going up,
it was it was tough.
>> But when you were a kid, were there like
275 GTBs floating around and that kind
of stuff? Yeah, there was there was 275
GTBs flowing around and uh and uh
towing, you know, tour to France cars
around and um yeah, just uh all the cool
stuff that now I wish I could somehow
>> Did you take it for granted as a kid?
>> Um
>> or did it seem special back then, too?
>> No, I think it seemed special back then.
Yeah, I think it, you know, we might
have take taken a little Alpha Julia or
something for granted, but uh some of
this other stuff was was um
>> was pretty special even then for sure.
You brought Steve one time up to the BAT
office in San Francisco at 275. Was that
somebody that somebody you knew through
Adam?
>> No. Well, so I come from the Ferrari
background as well, right?
>> Yeah. No, I Steve I know Steve when
Steve was doing that. Yeah. He was
giving a
>> That's my background too is is vintage
Ferrari. So I had started um T Rutland's
West Ferrari parts business here in
Monterey in 2009. They were the largest
aftermarket Ferrari parts dealer in the
US.
>> Wow. So that
>> for all eras basically
>> for all eras. Yeah. From 50s on up
through Yeah. major service kits and
early 2000s cars and and they're still
around. They got absorbed by another
company, but they're still in operating.
Yeah. Still in Monterey by the airport.
>> So I I parlayed that into Concord
Judging and and into Sports Car Market
magazine where I still had an Italian
focus. Um but then I went down to LA and
opened up GTO Engineering, Ferrari
Service and Restoration. So, I still,
you know, live in that world. I still
judge Concore and chief class judge and
Ferrari world. But I had known some
people up there. And I forget how the
conversation started, but we we were
wanting to kind of show staffers, you
know, what to look for when people
submit cars. And so, we had brought the
360 challenge that I drove up.
>> Oh, that's right. I forgot you had that,
too. Yeah. Yeah. And then um the um
automotive museum in San Francisco, the
one that kind of just the f the design.
>> Yeah. They're they're in Venice and all
the old dealerships.
>> Exactly. So I knew the collection
manager there and so I called and I
said, "Bring the 275, won't you?"
>> It was a big thrill for our staff, but
it was a fun day. They're like, "We
don't see a lot of those."
>> No, I'm sure. But you guys must have
been crossing paths and with Howard
Swig, our head of auctions, his dad,
right, with with Martin Swig, right?
must have been all kind of swimming in
the same pool a little bit.
>> I think so. I think uh when when Martin
was alive and and uh I remember hearing
the name all the time and um but yeah,
that's there was always that crossover,
but he was such an alpha guy.
>> Totally
>> right. Yeah, he was an alpha guy for
sure.
>> Uh tell us a little bit about the
facility we're in. This kind of blew my
mind. I've driven past a million times.
I've never stopped, which is frustrating
to me now because it's so great. Said it
was a Porsche dealership back then. This
was a Porsche Volkswagen uh dealership
all through the 60s and um it was called
Wester Volkswagen and uh that it was um
I mean I I don't I don't know exactly
but I think it was a they did tech here
for when the Can-Am cars were here and
they did them in the back. I mean it was
a total and of course Don Wester was a
huge racer raced the 906 I believe. Um
and uh so this I think they were
kneedeep in it and um uh this was this
was the place and then it moved into
seaside and they started the auto center
in the 70s and that's kind of where
still is. Right.
>> Where it still is. Yeah. Exactly. Right.
Well, right. Yeah.
>> Basically. And um this was um this you
know they slowly moved dealers out of
Monterey and this kind of that's kind of
where it started or Monterey didn't want
it but yeah this was the spot. This was
um uh you know service bays in the back
and
>> VW buses right here with the uh you know
the doors open and the awnings out and
>> this was the spot. Yeah, this was crazy
stuff. VW bugs, all that stuff.
>> Steve was saying you can still see the
pits back there or there used to be like
where they would go under the cars. Is
that right?
>> No, but
>> like filled in uh for like the different
>> Oh, maybe. Yeah, where you can Yeah, you
can still see the uh the mounts for the
lifts.
>> Oh, cool.
>> Yeah. Yeah, for sure. Maybe. But we've
also had clients come in or or people
just coming from out of town. They said,
"I came here as a kid or I was a
mechanic here or my mom bought her car
here and you just it it does kind of hit
you in the face a little bit." Because
you know that Monterey has a lot of
history in general and the decades just
start kind of rolling by and they go 50
60 years ago and you blink and that's
what happens. But it's cool to still
have there's people connected to that
original dealership and then now us.
>> Totally. How long have you been in the
facility? How long have you guys been
here?
>> Uh on and well since 2007, but on and
off since 1990. Things our location
changed with the window on the bay
project in Monterey. So we were farther
down the street and then that uh
Monterey, the city of Monterey was
buying those properties. So that was
sold and then we moved here as as part
of that transaction which is back in 07.
So this is actually our second time in
this building.
>> That's awesome. I mean, everyone knows
it, right? We all drive past it. where
you like you guys are well known and
then like I keep talking to my
colleagues and I'm like oh you guys know
where more import everyone knows where
it is right like you you're in a great
spot here
>> we're in a good spot you know I think
some people get it a little bit confused
sometimes and they go oh hey you've been
here forever because Jaguar Ferrari
Rolls-Royce was farther down since the
early 80s and I think sometimes we
benefit from people not exactly knowing
but anyway we've been here since the 90s
so it's
>> but you come off the freeway it's hard
you have to come right by so this is I
mean we get everybody for car week
driving by and it's a bit of a show but
>> yeah you can kind of speed right here so
you kind of
>> blow right by the time usually I'd like
to park something bright out in front
right there's usually there's a super
bird out there right now
>> right well that's what you were saying
that's the most rubber necking we've
seen and uh
>> it really has been but
>> next to having an accident where people
are I mean Jesus that's pretty great
yeah we love having that thing out there
>> I love seeing it out there uh so how did
the two of you guys get together how
long's that been happening And and how
did how did this partnership come to be?
>> God, I we've known each other maybe
since
>> 13, 14, maybe
>> early teens, just just being in the
community
>> um and just kind of crossing paths that
way. And um
>> I I was down in LA, like I said, running
that Ferrari shop and
>> I just kind of needed to get back to
Monterey and um I was working with a
shop. That's how we met.
>> You here too, Steve? Are you born?
>> No, not born in the area. And so it'll
be 20 years total now since I've been
here. Um but yeah, we just it just kind
of worked in introductions and um you
know, hey, let's we can do something at
Scottsdale in like 2016 and we were
hanging out and then I don't know
something changed. Steve King, you came
back up here in 18 and then we would
started I don't know I forget how paths
cross but yeah, we just said hey you
know what are you doing? Well, I could
we just started working together and and
Steve
>> joined running operations down there and
I hadn't really had a whole lot of sales
experience on a retail side like that
and you know, but I'd done sales and
automotive in different facets. So, it
just felt like there was some potential
here and
>> we both had a a good, you know,
potential and working relationship. And
so, I started in 18
>> 18. I think actually
>> you might have had you were sending some
appraisal thing here and you needed
another address and you walked in to
right and I'm like, "Oh yeah, dude. You
can send it here." And then we started
talking and I'm like, "What are you
doing?"
>> I didn't leave the desk. I never left.
>> And you never left.
>> He just moved. Right. Right. Pretty
much.
>> It was so great. He's like, "Hey, Adam.
This is Steve. I need to bring this
thing over. I need a third party address
or something." I'm like, "Well, dude,
send it here." I was getting my
accreditation and something like that
for appraisals under Donald Osborne and
>> and all of that and it was just just
budding up my career at that point and
>> you're going now we're using
>> again we use all those things dayto day
so
>> all the time.
>> Amazing. Are you guys both in here most
days?
>> I'm here I think I'm here Steve's here
>> I don't know. Yeah, we're both here a
lot. I guess I'm here more just just
from doing um uh you know keeping uh
>> whatever non-car business related stuff
or anything to do not to do with sales,
you know, or or consignments. Um but I
mean we're here all we're here all the
time. We I I mean we we're not here on
the weekends for the most part.
>> No, but unless you guys schedule an
auction for us.
>> We do a Sunday, but
>> we can talk to our scheduleer is here.
We can talk to
>> Yeah, we did talk to Yeah, talk to
>> uh I mean, but we're always on. So,
that's that's the thing, you know, we're
both up early and it could be 6:00 a.m.
and you're you're looking at options.
>> People filing in here the whole time
we've been here, right? So, you kind of
got to be ready to talk about whatever
at any given time, right?
>> This week's unique. Yeah, it's
different. You know, for sure. I mean
during the week I mean it's uh we had
the driveway I think you know maybe
since co closed and the second driveway
is open but um we don't get a whole lot
of foot traffic and and um but this week
yeah it's a whole new this is the way
kind of you would you know I don't know
if it was this way year round. I don't
know if you two guys hand
>> No so
>> is it a mix of old friends and new
people or or new right for sure. Yeah,
guys that we both dealt with and maybe
even different times of our careers and
and um the recognition from
>> all of that kind of starts aligning and
so you get repeat clients and and guys
who like using us. And then this year, a
little more uniquely, we had a couple of
um, you know, bigger collectors that had
just were looking for an outlet to sell
cars on BAT and um,
>> they you guys are it and so started
sending us more cars.
>> Well, you guys have built up a heck of a
reputation. I I want to talk about
collections. I think you guys have done
if not the most, certainly you have this
consistent Monterey collection. I look
back 2020 was the first one. This is the
sixth one in a row, which is amazing.
You were also, we were talking about
this, Adam, and both of you are like
early adopters of BAT auctions. And you
said it was your dad that dived in.
>> I think so. Yeah, I think so. In his
80s.
>> In his 80s when he had to get you on the
phone.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah. I know. But, you know, 2020, I
think it was obviously things were
>> Your account was back to 2016. So, it's
almost 10 years old.
>> And we had dabbled a little bit um kind
of in 18 and then in the fall of 19, we
had seen some success. And we had
actually two cars ending in the same day
which at that time was just
>> wild experience. and they both totally
>> and you know so then you hit the new
year in 2020 and we kind of were just
going all right what what's our plan for
this year and we had decided hey look
let's let's hold some inventory and
offer up you know in one month let's see
if we can do five cars on bat
>> and because it's you know holding cars
and stuff it it can be tough and on
consignment people have
>> yeah you're you're managing two
>> 100% they're like get my get my car sold
guys so we we kind of grouped all these
together and um co hit and this is March
of 20
>> and we had seven cars teed up ready to
go and
>> everything was canceled that year pretty
much cuz we were going to have an event
at at Laguna and
>> Yep.
>> Right.
>> But all those cars sold
>> and we said okay maybe this is maybe we
want to try to do this and by the time
we got to August we were kind of firing
and had our process down and we thought
hey you know it's it's car week still
for us. No one's coming. maybe we can
put on some a bit of a virtual um
exhibition. Totally. Right. And so we
had grouped up all of our cars and I
think we had 12 the first year
>> and um or maybe
>> I looked back at it. It was a little
more home. I mean like that was back
when Chris buying the camera. I mean we
were like we were the ones doing all
that stuff ourselves, right? Our staff
was way smaller. It was a really good
pairing of bring a trailer and more
though because that's also when our
business was exploding again. All the
sales are going online, right? It was we
could see it in in 18 and 19. We're
like,
>> it was already happening, right?
>> It was already happening, but Monterey
was already like, you know, I think
we're a little we're distanced. You
know, we you know, if you're not in a
metropolitan area, that was still a
factor and online auctions were changing
that.
>> Yep. Correct.
>> And you guys obviously were at the sharp
end of the spirit on that. So,
>> we felt it too. We we felt the growing
up together and and seeing that. And you
know we were defenders of BAT as well.
You know being on the retail dealership
side you know there's this tendency to
try to you know do deals in different
ways and we feel we felt like kind of
retail experience you know purveyors and
and that was lending to our expertise
and our strengths.
>> Well you guys certainly played an early
part in like convincing people that I
mean people thought it was crazy like
you you can't sell a car online but I
mean I want to dive into this. The level
of presentation you guys do is way
better than you're going to get at a
temp pole auction, right? Like it's like
so much more information and time for
people to chew on the car and ask
questions and look at the paper.
>> You got to talk to Steve about that. No,
I do all that. You guys have also been
stepping up the game and I think
postcards from Monterey is like the best
you've ever done. Like obviously it's
like the hero effort.
>> I think so. But but just coming back to
to uh you know kind of growing, we would
have people come through and you knew
already that bat was onto something when
they'd say, "Can I buy it now?"
>> Yeah.
>> And I'd say, "Oh, it's either going to
bat or it's live." Well, what would you
take for it now? I go, "We have to see
the auction." And we would stick with it
that way because we've heard of people
that would say, you know, it takes us so
long to get a car on here. This is years
ago.
>> Yeah.
>> And you know, I just sold it.
>> Yeah.
>> I go, I don't think that's the right way
to handle it. Yeah. You know, so anyway,
that was and when people would be like,
"Well, can I do something before?" And
then that's kind of how we both knew.
We're like, "Wait a minute.
>> Tell people to go."
But anyway, no, just just to touch on
that because that was something that
really stood out.
>> No, but you guys were really helpful in
helping expand the, you know, people who
believed in it early helped convince
others it makes I I think
>> that's true.
>> I think to a large extent people take it
for granted now that this is like how
cars get sold. We sold a million half
dollar car today. You know what I mean?
But people when you guys were starting
out, people were like, "That's nuts.
That's never going to happen."
>> Well, people wanted our results then,
too. They go, "Well, hold on. I want
what you got on back.
>> They start chasing it."
>> Yeah. They start chasing the number,
>> which is tricky for you guys, too, cuz
not all cars were created equal.
>> So, what you do is you you just make the
process uh the same for everything,
right? So, then you go, "Okay, well,
it's not like we're doing more for your
car than the next. We're going to treat
every car the same. We're going to treat
every car with the same process whether
it's 250 or 25,000.
>> We need true too, right? We needed a
duplicatable process that was just that
we didn't have to reinvent it every day.
>> We still do that. 5,000 car gets the
same treatment as a McLaren Senna. You
know,
>> I I believe in that too. And and it's
worked for our clients because
>> they they see the transparency. They see
the how connected we are. And you know,
we're just presenting cars as they are
and not really, you know, making
something more than maybe what it could
be.
>> They want your stamp of like kind of the
more presentation. That's like that's a
good pivot into you guys being local
partners uh for us, which we deeply
appreciate. And you guys are kind of one
of the we've done over 600 auctions at
this point. You're one of the most
established kind of brands on Bring a
Trailer. And people come I mean even my
most recent car I sold I sold it through
a local parker, right? Like
>> handing over your key to somebody you
trust, who you know is going to take the
best pictures, who you know has the
trust of buyers.
>> Like that's that's
>> I mean that's like what you want.
>> No, that's what the last five.
>> Hard work. Yeah. I'm not trying to
undercut that, but you guys have
succeeded in that.
>> Well, I mean you kind of pave the road
because when you as soon as you put
that,
>> you know, on on the name then I mean
it's the closest thing I think you get
to some kind of an authorized Yeah.
>> Right. where people that that they have
so much worry.
>> They trust you to send somebody to you,
right?
>> Well, yeah. I mean, and and individuals
coming in. I mean, there was been horror
stories for years about consignment and
>> anyway, it is just, you know, it was it
was always just the wild west a little
bit or it could be and but now it's, you
know, when you have an authorized name,
the the doubt is just out and now it's
just what's my car worth?
>> Totally.
>> Yeah. Totally.
>> How else can you make it, you know, how
nice can you make my car? And our
demographic too here in Monterey can can
be on the older side as well, right?
>> It's getting younger though, right?
>> I don't know why I'm thinking of that,
but no, really what you don't want are
our our clients and friends and club
members and stuff that, you know,
getting taken advantage of.
>> 100%.
>> And and that's that's a real thing cuz
you have to sit here across the table
from them and if you're going to sell a
car for them, you want everything to be
upfront and and clear.
>> And it's a small town. You run into them
all the time.
>> That's right. For sure.
>> They're here. Exactly. So when they can
come and do That's right. We see Reggie
Jackson in the grocery store all the
time.
>> We see Reggie.
>> So, yeah,
>> we love Reggie.
>> Us too. We do too.
>> Yeah, he's something else. He's
something else.
>> He really is. I tell you stories about
>> when they can come and drop their keys
off like you said and that's it. And
they know, hey, I'm just going to get me
a full experience. And we got that phone
call today on a car we sold. The guy
just just flat out said, "Guys, I mean,
this is exactly what I wanted and more."
And I all I had to do was just drop the
keys off. It's unbelievable.
>> So, it makes us feel good because we
know that our process is working.
>> It works for us and it's getting uh
noticed on the on the other side.
>> It 100% is. Can you walk us through that
a little bit about like what do what do
you do? I walk in with my keys to that
yellow car out there and I want you to
sell it. Like how do you how do you
Yeah. Okay. How do you how do you
>> No reserve. Yeah. Totally. Totally.
Totally. And then I freak out and yell
at you and walk away.
>> Right. And that's a bad experience.
>> Well, you can blame you can blame uh
bring a trailer for being hard on
reserves.
>> We can bring the punching bag,
>> right?
>> I hear that from time to time.
>> Uh but you guys are almost all
consignment. Yes,
>> almost a lot.
>> Yeah. Okay.
>> Just just tell me how you do it. I mean,
there's a little bit of, you know, it's
probably different if it's a longtime
client versus somebody who's new, but a
little bit of, you know, kind of getting
to know each other, walking around the
car, talking about it. You do
>> Sure.
>> quite a bit of the work here. You're at
least doing detailing here, right?
>> Detailing. Yeah. A lot of it is done
remote, right? Not a lot of people, how
many people really come in that can sign
cars, right? A lot of it sending
pictures.
>> 50% maybe that come in and sit at the
desk. Uh
>> yeah, a few. And just they just want to
establish a value.
>> Yeah. Interesting. Phone calls and
emails than a lot of the business.
>> Phone calls and emails. Yeah. No, that's
true. And it just it's really just
>> what do you this is what I wanted for
what do you think you guys can what will
it do? You know, and I think that's a
lot of the conversation.
>> Yeah. And then then it comes down to,
hey, you know, what is our process look
like? And and that is that's him and I
inspecting the car, establishing a
value, and then once it we kind of get
to that point where, you know, what's my
car worth, so to speak, it's it does it
goes through our our detailing process
and
>> maybe like mechanical, too.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah. Which we sub out a lot if there's
we don't do mechanical.
>> You guys know everybody, right? So
you've got all the people you need
>> for the most part. Yeah. They're all
getting older, though.
>> You just got to keep
>> You got to watch out.
>> Yeah. I there's some Jaguars around
here. There's not a ton of young guys.
>> Yeah. Right. Right. Yeah. We we sub out
just about.
>> Yeah. We get kind of the you know,
>> we get in the front of the line on those
guys, too. And it's it's all the stuff
that you don't think about when you have
to sell a car. Getting a car smogged.
Oh, yeah.
>> Uh you know, all the paperwork, all the
things,
>> the docks, getting the story,
you know, when we're not dealing with
folks like you, it's like
>> prying, you know, it's like so hard even
when people have it to like get them to
give it to you. want an individual.
Buyers are smart. They want all that
info, right? Give us everything.
>> Cuz in their mind, they've already made
up their mind to sell.
>> Totally.
>> So, it's like, Alex, I don't want to put
tires on this. I'm selling it. Yeah.
Right. Or whatever. Yeah.
>> So, what we do too, I mean, we put on
different hats, right? So, we're trying
to get the most value out of people's
cars as well. So, hey, look, you know,
it's more than a lateral move if you go
do new tires and new a brake service and
establish a new baseline on an oil
change. you know, let us spend a little
bit of your money in order to get it
back and more. Yeah. You know, um so we
we play that game, chips on the scale
for them. Um like you said, sometimes
they're in here and they're, hey, this
is a one-way trip. Just sell it as is.
And other people are more um detail
oriented and want to know
>> want to be involved.
>> Yeah. They want little step. So
>> yeah,
>> it's some handholding um
>> some telephone calls
>> and a lot of people say it's exciting.
They just love I mean I don't know if
they love the the auction side of it.
It's it's it's interesting, but it's
also exciting.

Sometimes, especially again this older
demographic, sometimes when they've had
something for a long time, you go, look,

And they a lot of times people they call
I can't tell many times they go,
>> I saw this car online. I think I want to
buy it. Oh, that's right. It's their
car.

>> They They just can't believe, you know,
how we've we've put it on a platter and
and uh
>> Well, it lives there forever. I go back
and visit some of my old cars on Bring a
Trailer every once in a while, so they
can always go back and look.
>> Uh
>> that's interesting. Yeah. Everything
there lives there forever, which is
pretty makes you think. Um
>> you can see every car that didn't sell.
You can see
part of the of the market.
>> Yeah. You you I presume you use Bring a
Trailer to help cars, right? Like all
the data is there that we have 200,000
results.
>> I'm an appraiser. I mean
>> I I use it on all my appraisals.
>> I mean really it's the best of
>> reference.
>> It's the best tool I have in in my
toolbox.
>> We got to lock that data up and sell it.
Guys sell a whole cattle.
>> That's coming.
>> No, I mean just like you guys, full
transparency is so important. It's so
murky when you go to some of the
tentpole auctions. It's like, God, I
really want to know what that car sold
for cuz
>> I don't whatever in a tadpole auction. I
would have to remember that.
>> Yeah. or you've got or you go to like
even other platforms where you can't
access that information. It's
frustrating for you got to log back in
>> or if you can't see the comments. I mean
one
>> yes
>> this happens to you guys too. You know
once we've been doing this for 11 years
now a car comes through multiple times
and now the previous trailer auctions
are part of the history of the car. That
NSX is a perfect example. Your black
NSX, right? Like you guys knocked that
out of the park but the owner that
you're consigning it for obviously did
mods, drove it quite a bit, right? And
so it's so interesting to see, you know,
the old auction and the new one and what
has changed and that's all so important.
Like how can you be
>> an educated buyer if you can't see that
stuff? You know what I mean?
>> I know. I know that secondary market.
>> A lot of our job is right there on
>> We love alumni cars. I mean,
>> it's our favorite.
>> It does help us, but it also it's it's
great because you you can make decisions
based off of what happened before and
what happened now. I think we had three
or four alumni cars in this bad sale
>> which just Yeah, we like it.
>> Which I think each year is probably
going to be more and more
>> more and more. I mean, eventually we've
sold all the cars, right? That's what
we're trying to get there. 200,000
auctions now. We need a couple hundred
thousand more and they'll all have been
>> That's right. But just calling, you
know, cars that have run before an
alumni car. I mean, it's just one word
and it changes the whole
>> That's Randy. He'll be here shortly. You
can give him credit for that. I mean, he
loves the idea of it, right? It have
been four or five times on the site now.
>> Yeah. You know,
>> and it's funny because when we first
started, you talk about us championing
BAT, people thought, well, if it doesn't
sell, you're going to tarnish the car.
>> That's right. It's all tarn. You're
going to ruin the car by putting it on
back.
>> About 3 years ago,
>> maybe a little longer now.
>> But it's just
>> they were afraid.
>> Yeah. You're afraid. And other, you
know, dealer buddies years ago, oh, if
you put it out online like that, you're
going to shoot yourself in the foot if
it doesn't sell. and then you get the
results
>> or they sell and
>> or even a few it's never a terrible
number. It's like you know that there's
a lesson to be learned there. You know
what I mean for all of us.
>> Now people go it's that was just the
day. So the perception of that
conversation has changed. Yep.
>> You know they can't really put that in
our face like it's
>> no they're running out of
>> excuses. We want everyone to know. We
want everyone to see the auction the
result
>> and also the post sale and sell the
office program.
>> It's like hey what'd you sell it for? Um
it's right there online.
>> Yeah. I mean it was murky for us roll
for a part of that was us. We didn't
know what was happening after the fact.
I mean we would know when we could talk
to friends like you guys but for a lot
of us we knew cars were transacting
after the fact that was not visible to
people. So there's a transparency piece
in that too. People can now see what
happens after the fact.
>> Yeah. Right. Right. Yeah. We like it.
Yeah. But that was also handled right
too. Right. It's like, well, you know,
good luck. We'll put you together. We're
not involved.
>> Best, you know. Yeah.
>> Whatever, you know, whatever you can put
together, great. But I mean, the the
offers program has been another I don't
know. It's been good to keep Bat still
involved.
>> Yeah. Uh so earlier, uh Steve, or maybe
it was you, Adam, one of you mentioned
the effort it takes to put one of these
things together. Now we're at 20 cars
for this newest collection. You put
together these awesome postcard things.
That's a hell of a lot of work, Steve,
isn't it?
You know, we always say Monterey Car
Week is, you know, a marathon to the
starting line, you know. So, we we just
work for 90 days.
>> I was going to say it's it's a long
time. I mean, you and I are we're
talking.
>> Yeah. It's it's kind of And you guys
here a little I mean, we're Memorial Day
starting to prep, hey, the conversation
for for that. So, we try to get some
early consignments as always. That way
we can get a lot of that front-loaded
work done.
>> Sellers want to be part of it now that
they know and you kind of have a
tradition of doing this every year.
Yeah, we we've got repeat sellers on um
a guy came in today and he said, "Hey,
remember me? I sold in your car week
sale and I just wanted to come by and
and talk to you." But it it is a
tremendous amount of work. But
>> the idea is, you know, we do all that
front-loaded work ahead of time as we
submit the car, before we submit the
car, and that, you know, we're not
adding so much during the week. We're
not adding paint meter readings or body
stampings and stuff. It's all done. You
got it done. So, when we're here during
car week and it's madness and we're
selling auctions, there's less questions
for us to answer. There's less for us to
do. And we we do that normally for our
auctions, but especially for car week,
it's and then you add in all the social
elements and all the creativity that
goes into maybe doing this. And maybe we
went a little overboard this year, but
>> no, I people have been talking about
like people coming up to me, they're
talking about how great it is, the
theme, the idea of having it on
postcards. I think it's really clever
and I think it's rad.
>> Well, it was, you know, we postards.
>> Yeah, postcards was something kind of
stuck in my brain for a couple years. U
our photographers walking around here,
Mike, he shoots all of our cars uh front
and back. And you know, we we have a
wonderful backdrop here, right? The
peninsula has got great beach spots and
we've got about 75 different location.
>> Where's the you Oh, you don't don't give
up the secret so I won't ask you where
it is, but the building with all the
sign, you know, the sign that's such a
great backdrop that you have.
>> Oh, like the murals.
>> Yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Right.
>> Yeah. I mean, and then you know, you got
Baja Cantina and you've got Big Su and
and we we're ambitious in our
>> It's an embarrassment of riches for like
setting.
>> Absolutely.
>> And this is like one of the car meas of
the world too, right? So
>> well yeah I think for for one week of
the year but I don't know maybe not
maybe it's just associated
>> it's a general freaking bridge on the
you know how many car commercials are
shot on the

>> so then you know we get to locations and
the car gets set and we start and it's
there
>> and I just kept thinking boy this is
like a postcard you know and it stuck
with me and and I just thought well what
if we
>> you know people I think it was Howard
who said you know not all your buyers
are here in Monterey for car They're
mostly not here.
>> He did. He said that we were we wanted
um longer uh on premium listings. We
wanted more days or something. Okay.
Yeah, guys. You're
>> not even They're not even I don't think
your buyer's even in town.
>> I think a lot of them aren't probably.
>> We had some people are obviously, right?
>> Pick up a car. Hey, I'm down I just
bought this car. I'm down the street. A
guy bought a car today. He's at the
track.
>> Do you drive it out there?
>> Uh we have we've driven them out to the
track before, but uh No. No. came right
in and out.
>> But um yeah, so we were like,
>> let's let's make a postcard that we can
send to our buyers.
>> Yeah.
>> So, it was kind of got, you know, a
little sappy in the sense that we had
written these like letters like
>> we're in an experience and we want you
to hear about it and that we are
Monterey and we we felt like we're in
the fabric of the community. So, it it
kind of just grew and and we made each
car into its own postcard.
>> Be careful. People are going to start
asking you for big blown up maybe that's
already happening. Big blown up photos
of your uh of your shots for the for the
cave.
>> Yeah, we we definitely have all
>> everyone gets all the photos that that
we take. So each car in their glove box,
they'll get a USB drive of all the
pictures. So we're part of their the
history BAT auction is part of the
history of the car,
>> you know, and history of Providence is
is important. So, someone's going to
say, and we're not the ones to create
this. I mean, the the major auction
houses have created um you know,
standalone collection sales over the
years, and I watched that through Sports
Car Market. Yeah. You know, and you go,
"Oh, that's clever." The Don Davis
collection. Yeah. Totally. Or whatever.
And um they group these things together,
>> and I think we've done a dozen of them
now.
>> Six car week. We do one now in January.
Yeah. The upshift sale. I used to be
more involved with it. Now I'm too
important. That's right.
>> I'm always happy to connect you with
guys. No, it's I actually love

>> I love the way uh our staffs actually
work together. It's really good. Like I
hate to be a middleman. Like let me
connect you right with the person who's
going to Mike is here. Put a lot of your
listings competitive, right? Like it's

connection is there. We've met a lot of
specialists. We're friends with some

The theme is always positive from the
first and you know, first interaction,
it's happy to work work with you on
this. Even if we've done a lot of cars,

>> new 535 or whatever it is, right? Looks
great. When I said I was coming over, we
said we'd bring a couple people. Every
single staffer was here was like, I want
to go. They love you guys. Yeah, of
course.

>> Well, we like that you guys, you know,
bought into our concept, too. And, you
know, you get you're we're like, I don't
know. Are they going to they going to
like this? Is this going to work? Fit
their brand.
>> Well, yeah.
>> Absolutely. We're we're super aligned.
>> The viewership just goes up. I know.
>> They all rise with the tide. They all
feed off each other. So, if you're in
our if you make our collection sale, you
know, your viewership is gonna it's
going to go away.
>> The only problem now is you have to up
yourself next year. So, what is
>> right? I don't know. You have some idea,
but I'm not going to say
I do tease it.
>> I won't. I got a good one. I haven't
told anybody yet. So, I got next year's
planned out.

Bring a Trailer has put together and and

makes it easy for people to um get good
values out of their cars and they and
and it's uh I think we're just I people
come in and they go, "Well, if If I
don't do it this way, how else do I sell

just just how much we're,

granted. It's it's pretty great what
what is been put together, you know, and

We we really feel and I you know it's

confidence alive with us, but we're the
we're the best team on BAT this week.

and we're shooting cars and and doing

everything in basically one day in terms
>> Do you do them in batches? Do you take
more in one car or
>> two two car days?
>> You take max out of two.
>> Yeah, we've we've done some three three
car days before, but that's it's all
about really about quality and timing
and everything else too. All plays into
a factor. And um
>> but you know between him and um Addison
his his son, he's you know a major
buddy. He stands in sometimes on step,
>> but he know he he knows more than we do
about stuff that we don't know about,
you know, so he fills the gaps.
>> He's, you know,
>> retention is unbelievable.

>> But has the the understanding. So seeing
him kind of grow into a better role. Um
and then the back end of the house with
um you know with Katherine Moore. So it
is a family affair. Um Saul, our

he's been

time. And you don't years ago, we would
when it was a car was done, you know,
I'd go back out and all right, let's
take a look at it, you know, let's make

detailed for us. It's hard. We're like a
band, you know. Yeah, totally. You can't
just break in and be a saxophone player.

Those are some of the most fun ones. A
couple years ago

vote like ah it's a Volkswag oh my god I
mean the attention was

talking about R32s at dinner last night

to dive a little bit personal like what
are the
>> what are some of the it's a good segue
Adam what are some of the cars that you
guys have either have surprised you the
most or have been the most exciting to
have passed through here in the last few
years. They're like ones that come to
mind where you're not even necessarily
if they were on a V8 auction, but where
you're like, "Oh man, that's a car I
fell in love with or that's a car that I
didn't think I was going to like that."
>> Are there certain cars that we're
talking about? Is it is it like, you
know, the Cadillac coming through or um
>> we we know what we like individually,
right? There's certain cars that
definitely come in and we just go, "Oh,
like that's that's I'd like to have
that." And that's that's an abundance of
wealth here of of of different cars, but
>> that happens frequently.
>> Usually it's like the photo sets that
really set me off. Like I really go
that's my favorite photo session there.
>> Interesting.
>> And because I'm on that side of it more,
so we take a lot of pride in just how
something might look or something might
feel. So like even this 993 Carrera RS,
>> um it So in these car week, I'll be
quick with it. With these car week cars,
we we really try to make each spot
really special. You know, this is the
week we do our best,
>> but sometimes the weather doesn't work,
the timing, and you're trying to force
something. Yeah.
>> So, we're ripping down. We had one idea
with this 993
>> and it didn't work out. We go to a
second location and it's not working
out. No.
>> And we're going, "Oh my god, this is
like star car of our sale." We're we're
out here in the middle of nowhere trying
to find a spot to take photos and we
pulled off on this spot that we knew
about in Big Su and we just kind of were
like, "Oh, well this is it." And it was
literally the postcard shot for us and
out on the coast and the highway and the
fog was coming in and we weren't
convinced it was the deal and it just
unraveled into our favorite shot that we
ever did. And that was just uh this last
told me, "Hey, this is
>> I know. Now you're selling me all that."
>> Oh my gosh. I mean, it was just one of
those moments and we're we're driving
back and we're looking at each other
like, "Man, that was like a career
moment for us." So sick.
>> To me, that's where the connection lies.
N the cars, they they come and they go
and I like a lot of stuff, but it really
comes down to like how well we presented
a car.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah. I wonder if you guys get jaded. I
mean, I walked in here, I was like,
"Every car here is rad." So,
>> do you sound jaded?
>> No, you don't. You sound enthusiastic
still.
>> Yeah. That Oh. Yeah, you got to keep
that going. I don't know. Yeah.
>> Well, there's some tiring days all day
long on BAT. I like I've found it's hard
for me to
>> I mean being at car week is great for me
because I'm like, "Oh gosh, I do like
cars. I remember that. I really like
them, right? There's the whole reason I
even like wanted a job bring a trailer."
And but
>> there are days when you look at them in
and out uh day in day out. You're
looking at cars all day long and you're
like, gosh, I don't know if I do even
care about anything anymore.
>> It does.
>> But I have found some things that I used
to like I don't when I look at them a
lot. cars that like that R32 that you
were talking about. Cars surprise me now
that I find interesting, right?
>> I find I am particularly attracted to
history. So like your 356, how do I look
at that and I'm like, "Oh, that's
amazing." Like the the little parking
pass from a you know,
>> you look for that stuff, right? A
sticker in the window. Get me excited.
>> Yeah. Right. Well, that's what keeps us
that means you're a car enthusiast.
>> Yeah. Right.
>> Oh, I come back to Adam plenty of times
and go, "Dude, look what I just found in
this thing." or whatever, you know,
photos or old, you know, oil change
receipt from some place that's been
closed for 50 years or, you know what I
mean?
>> Or it's the Yeah. the guys that keep
track of their mileage and the gas fold
and they just log books.
>> The log books that you go and kiss I do
all the documents. I can do that.
>> And I just I'd lose it after I geek out
and I would do it for 20 years on some
of these cars and it's, you know, five
bucks to fill the whole tank, you know?
I mean, it's unbelievable.
>> That's crazy. Yeah, that's right.
because it it tells a history of the of
America on top of being a history of
that car, you know.
>> That's true.
>> Yeah, that's true. That's totally true.
We all love the story. You know,
everyone, you know, has a story whether
it starts in the parking lot or if it's
posted online. You know, I think it's I
think it's important element because you
do have a little bit of a boilerplate on
the auction write up and and we tell our
clients on almost every auction. Listen,
we we'll bring a lot of these things to
the comment section throughout the week
because we know it's important and we
just keep reinforcing or adding on to
the story that you can't just put in the
body. Yeah.
>> But that's our job is to is to tell that
story through the comments and uh keep
everybody just listing too. I I I want
it to be better than boilerplate
ideally, right? Like we want rich
information in the in the in the listing
as much as we can, even though it's
that's tough.
>> One of the things that frustrates me
about the kind of classic auction write
up is they give you a thousand words on
the history of Fiat, but like 10 words
on the car in front of you.
>> And it's like, dude, you want the
opposite. Like
>> people can go to Wikipedia and read
about Fiat. Tell me about this car. This
car? Yeah.
>> No, we get that. And we we like the
process of going back and forth on uh on
a draft. Yeah, absolutely.
>> He's in the background, but we've got a
draft back this morning on a car and the
sent it to him and the client's here
making more notes. He was there making
notes.
>> He's literally walking around during
this podcast look and and he's going to
help us
>> I love that
>> tell that story. So,
>> sometimes it takes people seeing a first
draft to kind of jog their memory and be
like, "Oh, I you know what I mean?" Like
>> it does. Yeah. And they always want a
lot of times they want it to be more,
you know, hey, this is a great looking
or this is very rare. And I go, "Oh,
well, we can't get into that yet, but
we'll get into that in the comic for You
know, so tells like the buyers want the
facts.
>> It's so hard I find, and you guys must
struggle with this all the time, to get
a seller to put themselves in the minds
of a buyer, even though they are often a
buyer. It's like, dude, what would you
want to know about this car if you were
buying you, you don't want somebody to
tell you it was nut andbolt restored or
that it's freight? You want somebody to
tell you what was done during that
restoration. Show me the receipts. Show
me the bills. Show me tell me what was
done.
>> Well, they're all different. And I and
we have to the the hardest part maybe of
our job is is buffering
>> the comments about the comments.
>> Oh, that's tough.
>> So we we direct them to a personal you
know uh comment box which is our inbox
or our text message and just say spell
it all out here and we regurgitate it
into such an important service
professional way.
>> Know the comment section is the catch 22
of BAT. It's the thing people hate the
most. It's also maybe the most
important.
>> I love it. I love it. I wake up every
day in that comment section.
>> Hey boy, sellers watch out. They take it
personally when they get comments. Who
wa I mean people would love to.
>> It's just a comment.
>> Yeah. They'd love to they'd love us to
eliminate it. And like a lot of people
and I'm like
>> it's hard to tell somebody who's upset
often rightfully so about somebody
picking on their car that it's like
that's actually given the people
confidence to bid on your car, right?
Like it's like a it's
>> a
blessing in disguise.
>> Yes. Right. M but it's hard for to see
it at the time when you're caught up in
the zic and your car is not at a number
at once yet and you're all scared. It's
why it's so low. Why is my car so low?
>> Why isn't Why isn't that one I was just
saying
my client's rating this?
>> Yeah. Yeah.
>> Oh my god. Yeah.
>> By the way, there's like no auction that
closed where somebody won't be like
stolen and then somebody else is like
way overpriced.
>> Yeah. Why is that? That is just
>> every I mean it's the same thing when
you're dealing with a client. It's like
everybody has their own idea of what
things are going on.
>> People say all the time, "Oh, the
market's this or the market's that." And
I go, "But so what are you watching?"
>> Yeah. Right.
>> And they and they kind of look at me
like, "What do you mean? I'm looking at
everything." There's no way. Yeah.
>> There's no way you can look at
>> I truly understand the market, but but
you don't understand, Steve. My car is
different than the rest of
>> It's like, but but pockets. Have you did
you see this car? This pocket is going
that went crazy. And maybe it's a little
softer on what you own, what you know
about, but you know, but BAT gives you
that opportunity to look at so many
different cars that you might never look
at on the daily. So our buyers and
sellers are much more educated. Yep.
That's the difference too
>> from 15, 20 years ago. The education
level and the understanding is it wasn't
this bit that understands everything.
The road's wider.
>> That's what I mean. Like you have to
assume the buyers are super educated.
They can go to all these places and
learn. So like you can't fool them. You
need to like tell them the truth, you
know?
>> Yeah. And the knowledge is out there. I
mean,
>> right.
>> Right. Years ago, people only a few
people knew where to go get maybe a CN36
tire. You had to know something. Now
it's just information is out there. It's
the same when they come in on the cars.
They see everything and again easier, I
think.
