I'd always go back to like planes.

But it was there's a couple key moments that I remember I grew up in a
small town in northern Wisconsin.
So like the car scene, if there was any was typically like, you know, restored
like classic cars of something like that.
And like the car show is, you know, restored classic cars, which was still
cool and I liked, uh, but I remember like the first time seeing like a.
I don't even want to call it a tuner car because it was a Cavalier, but
it had like a body kit on it and like it was, you know, painted
like a bright red color and, uh, it was funny because my mom knew who was
because she was a teacher and, uh, and she and he would always go ripping
up the street and she would always get sold as like, damn it, Troy.
She was like one of the, like the people like run out like, you know,
in the street, like run in the street, and she, you know, he's
like wave is like go by, but I think it was like those were like the
first time I remember seeing like actually modified cars like
that and I was like, that's kind of cool.
That's sick.
Um, and then it was like, we didn't have a lot of car shows.
Like I said, like the only real one that we would have was we never
really went to, um, back home because it was all just like the same,
like five restored classic cars.
Uh, but we would always go down to the Juliette Speedway to visit
my uncle, uh, who lived down in Illinois and they had at the time
it was called the super Chevy show and it was, uh, at the drag
strip that was like adjacent to the Juliette Speedway in Illinois
and it was a huge event.
I always remember being so freaking hot.
I never wanted to be there because it was always so freaking hot.
And I was little, uh, but they would run drag races all day.
And there was like, like cars, like classic car show, like attached
to it and a lot of it was like Chevy stuff, but there was a lot
of other stuff there, but I remember seeing a Dodge Viper there
for the first time in person and I was like, that is freaking sick.
Like that is the coolest car to ever exist.
And I remember being able to like check that out in real time or like
in person for the first time.
But then I think what really sealed the deal is when I got in the high
school and we were fortunate, fortunate enough to have, uh, shop classes
at our high school and we had, uh, started with like an intro to
tech like class.
So he took a little bit of woodworking, a little bit of metals.
And then, um, I can't remember what the last one was.
I think it was like intro to autos or something or small
engines or something like that.
I did it into a small engine and small engines.
I thought was so cool, uh, cause like I had been tinkering with
RC stuff my whole life.
And so like that was like, this, this makes sense.
I really liked this, but it was like the next step up.
Uh, and then the following year, you know, when I finally got
like my driver's license and stuff, we, you know, got auto
shop class and that I think is what sealed the deal for me.
Cause it was like an hour a day or hour and a half a day

And then we would always be able to pull our shit in and
work on it, you know?
And so like if we had something to install, like one of the
guys had, you know, like had like a Camaro or something,
like a third gen Camaro, like, oh, I'm putting an exhaust on
it, you know?
And I was like, damn, that's crazy to like see that
happen real time, like modifying a car real time.
And you can just do this and it's really not that
hard to do shit like this, right?
I think that sealed the deal.
And then it was really cool to our, um, the area that we
had the shop class, like had some, uh, graduating classes.
They did like murals on the wall.
So there was like a Mark four super painted up there.
There was like an RX seven, like FDRX seven painted up
there that they painted and like had signed like class
like, oh, five or whatever it was.
I think they're still there.
Uh, but I always remember those being there.
I'm like, this is, this is sick.
Yeah, pretty awesome.
Um, but I think, I think that really sealed the deal.
I was like, when I realized that it's, it's not, you know,
just in the movies or just in the video games to do
shit like this, like anyone can go do this.
Seems like it was kind of a smooth progression for you though,
too, like, like you saw the, the Cavaliers you were
saying, right?
And then you went and did some automotive events.
So like you already had like your foot in the door,
but then like, when you actually started working on
stuff is when you're like, yes, this is what I never
realized it until then.
I was like, it was kind of like, oh yeah, it was fun,
but I was a kid, you know, so it was like, oh, this is
just, you know, cars not really obtainable.
So like, yeah.
So it was like, yeah, that's cool, but now my ADHD is
now dedicated towards something else.
But I think, like I said, once, once it clicked that
it was like, it's, like I said, it's not just the
movies, it's not just the video games.
Like this is literally like, you can do this.
Yeah.
Um, that's everything just was a snowball effect
from there.
Totally.
Because I bought an exhaust for my neon SXT and then
bought an intake for it and then I started looking
at, you know, how to like lower it and all that
sort of stuff and doing the maintenance on it.
And then I bought my Eclipse or well got my Eclipse
because it was free because I had a blown engine
in it and we sourced a new engine and swapped
the engine in and did a whole bunch of, you
know, mechanical fixes and body panel shit on
that.
And, you know, that was, that was the real
start of it.
Yeah.
Natural progression.
Side note before we ask you a question, Dakota,
you talked about like your first mods or like
putting in an exhausted intake on.
Yeah.
I don't know if I'm alone on this, but I didn't
know at the time that an intake would
increase noise like when I was 16.
Yes.
So when I put it on, I was like, I was like,
yo, this thing sounds sick.
But then none of my friends knew either that
it would increase the sound.
So I like texted him like, yo, you guys,
this I'm putting an intake on my car.
And now it sounds like a, like a fucking
race car and my friends are like, yeah, okay,
that shit, that doesn't do anything.
What are you talking about?
That take doesn't, and I, like I pulled up and
I'd be like, grab my engines and be like, no way.
Like, oh, I'm actually going to hear it.
Like the same exact thing happened to me because
I put the exhaust on and it was some fucking
cheap, no-name EBA exhaust.
And it was like, it was a neon SXT.
So it was just NA four cylinder, I know
shocker and it was like, it was so quiet.
I was so disappointed.
Like how actually like quiet it was, but
it's a nice tone to it.
It was just super quiet.
And when I eventually bought the intake for it
and threw it on, I threw that on at home on
a weekend and my buddy, Luke, lived right down
the street and I was like, okay, I'm going to
just go drive it over and show him.
So like, I was like driving over there.
I'm like, man, this thing, this kind of sounds
it, but I didn't like super get on it.
Cause like you said, he was like right
down the road, I didn't like super get
on it and I went and picked him up and
we like went down though.
There's this like road that like ran right
along the river that we got.
That was like our, our like proving
grounds.
That was my, that was my test, my test track.
Cause there was never one beyond it.
It was a nice road and it's nice and curvy.
Yeah.
And I was like, how happened?
We're going to go, you know, I want to show you
the new intake, you know, cause I knew
that it would have like the, like the sound
to it.
I remember like getting out of her sight and
I had that whoop.
And I was like, holy, like we just looked
at each other like the fuck was that
and like did it again.
And it was, it sounded like a completely
new karma.
This is fucking awesome.
I mean, I feel like that's the moment
when it really, yeah, it's in though.
Yeah.
A hundred percent for sure.
Yeah.
I had no idea it would even change the sound.
Yeah.
Not even a clue.
So like when I got in and I was like, whoa.
Like this is in the world.
This is the best mod you can ever do.
Intakes are kind of curated.
Especially on turbo platforms too.
Oh, for sure.
For that on turbo.
That's a huge difference.
You start making all kinds of different noises.

It's honestly really funny because Maggie
got the FK8 type R and the first mod
that we did to it was an engine intake.
And actually being able to hear like the turbo
for the first time, it's funny because like we'll go driving
now and I could tell like she like will purposely
like get on a bit just to I'm like, there you go.
She's like, that sounds really cool.
That's the best.
All right, Dakota, what was the moment when you were like
locked in as a car enthusiast?
Kind of like what Joseph, I think it's like phases.
Yeah.
Because I think I liked cars as a kid,
but I wasn't fully in for all of them.
But it's because I couldn't own a car, right?
I'm so far away.
I got to be 16 years old to get my driver's license.
But I would say like collecting hot wheels.
I was huge into that.
I had that like generic carpet that every kid had grown up
and all that.
And I liked them there.
But then the turning factors, that what got me into like
the idea of modification was I got X mods.
I don't know if you guys ever had that.
Yep, I know exactly what you mean.
Radio Shack had X mods and they were like tuner cars
and you could swap out the wheels.
You could put on body kits.
Well, they were like that probably.
That's huge.
That's what I'm saying.
Yeah, Joseph, they're a little, I'm like,
kind of the biggest thing you could get, honestly.
But no, they were really cool.
They were detailed.
It wasn't like cartoony cards or not license.
They were fully licensed, actually really detailed.
So like I had a Corvette, NSX and a Red Mustang.
And you could put wings on them.
You could change out the motors so they would go faster.
That's what like got me into like modification.
Like, whoa, this is cool what you can do with a car.
And then to next phase after that was a middle school.
I was outside in a Dodge Neon SRT-4 run by
and I heard it with that aftermarket exhaust.
And then that was like, I need to do that someday.
Like when I can get a car,
I want to get one that sounds like that, that's sick.
Then I would say next phase from that is getting a car.
And I had a PT Cruiser that I did mods too,
but it was like, it was like subs and stuff.
And at this point, I still,
I don't know anything about cars.
I don't know anything I'm doing.
I don't know what cars are good.
It's like, I see a picture of a Lamborghini,
or I see a Lamborghini and I take a picture of it.
Cause I'm like, whoa, cool car.
Like I don't know anything about cars.
I mean, Lamborghini.
I mean, I would still take a Lamborghini.
Yeah, but like, it's just like,
that's what I think of when I think of a cool car.
Cause I don't know anything else.
And I have a PT Cruiser.
Then I got my Mustang GT, which I always wanted.
I probably do to the fucking X mods now that I think about it.
I always wanted a Mustang GT.
So I got one and I did the intake and exhaust.
Same as you guys are saying,
remember the first time I put that intake in
and you throttle down and you hear,
it was like, holy, whoa.
And I would say that had me pretty set in.
Like I bought my first pair of wheels,
got the exhaust intake put in.
My dad helped me install all that stuff.
And I was pretty, pretty deep in at that point.
But the absolute turning factor,
I am hooked on cars.
Like I have an addiction.
It was when I got my Cobalt SS and I started modifying it.
And that, I've said it before,
but that's why I'll always be hooked on turbo forebangers.
And I absolutely love them.
I think they're such good platforms, easy to work on.
Generally pretty cheap and affordable,
easy to fix if stuff goes wrong and just fun to drive.
And from there, it was just all downhill.
It was just constant.
Like dude, it encapsulated my life.
The only thing I was doing was car stuff.
It was like, go to work, get home.
I'm either working on the car,
figuring out when the next meet is,
or taking photos of cars.
And that's all I was doing the entire time.

I've seen a recurring trend here
on like our first cars that we modified.
And I even remember in high school too,
like everybody was doing that.
Why the hell were we putting giant subs in our stuff?
Was that just like, was that just of the era?
I think it was.
Are kids still doing that with their first builds?
Cause I had, I had, I upgraded my head unit speakers
and put subs in my eclipse before I had wheels,
before I lowered it.
Like that was like the first thing I wanted to do.
And I haven't done it since.

I looking back at like the high school parking lot,
I was really the first one at the time.

I was the first 2G Eclipse like to be there
by graduation, there was three more.

He went and got a blue one that was kind of modified
already had like a body kit on it

And I remember being like really jealous of it

like it was like built in like 2000.

Which I think it was kind of cool.
Like the body kit was like all beat up and stuff.
And then there was another guy in my class
that got like a green 2G.
And then there was a girl
that ended up getting a 2G convertible
and we would always like part together.

It was like, you know, we had so many Eclipses
and someone had like a 3G eventually.

That, it was funny because there was none of that before.
And then like by the end of like, you know, my senior year
there was like a handful of Eclipses
and some other like cars out there.

and stuff like that.

And then a couple other people that I knew
kind of buddies with had some like C6 Vets and stuff.
That I wasn't really into muscle stuff at the time.

but at the time I was more interested in SRT-4.

We had a guy in our parking lot.
There was quite a few of us that were in
to tamper in with our cars,
but there was one guy that like,
he actually knew what he was doing a bit more.
He had a good grip on things.
And he had a LSJ Supercharged Colbalt SS, yellow.
Had the high rise wing carbon fiber hood.
Like someone with a carbon fiber hood in high school,
it was like, that's big baller status.
Here's the real kicker.

So everyone knew Tony's Colbalt SS
with the vertical doors and underglow too.

And then he ended up like,

And I, last time I knew too,
he had that Colbalt again.
Like it traveled and went around,
but I think he ended up getting it back.

That was one of the people like,
I knew at school, everyone knew that car.
So that was, that was really neat.

a little bit cause they're huge tubes.
And then with the clips that went on,
you had the same stuff.
We hit it pretty well,
but like winter got really cold and it's plastic.
And they all broke up.

That kind of was a bummer.

Like I got really big cruiser
and I like ripped all that stuff out.

He just put it on the inside of his car.
So he'd be driving around and it's like,

the kit that I bought came with like the interior kit
as well.
So it had like really skinny like tubes
that you could use for the interior.
So I basically took all of that
and just put it in my clips then.
I think it looked pretty good.

which was like the hatch and then like in the foot well.
And then like under the seats.
So like it was all in like the foot.
I thought it looked pretty good.
The foot well lighting is,
I had that too.
I feel like everybody goes through that.
It's a Canon event when you put
the foot well lighting in your car.
Tap some screws and then you have the little
like city remote that like only works
if you're pointing it like directly.
There was so shitty.
And then there was another one.
This was from the town over.
So about 15 minutes away.
Went to the, the rival school as well.
But it was a flat black SRT four.
And, but it was actually painted like matte black.
It wasn't wrapped or spray bomb.
Like it was full on professionally spray painted
or Jesus Christ.

And there was like a craze of that.

It just went crazy.

It was always around, but dude,

just getting traded.

People were always trading their cars.
And by the like end of the summer, dude,
that thing I swear had over 20 owners.
Like it was just constantly,
you'd see it pop up for sale,

By like, you know, yeah, the 10th owner,
this thing is like crusty now.
And it was decent when it started.

But I always loved SRT4s.
A lot of my buddies growing up had them.
And I never owned one myself.
My wife ended up getting one.
So I've always had a soft place in my heart for those.

And I had, at the same time I had my black GLI.
And it's kind of funny because like we'd swap cars
every once in a while.
And like drive train wise, they're very similar cars.
But you could just tell the refinement of the GLI.
But then you'd hop in the SRT4.
It's not refined whatsoever.
But it is so fun.
Like it's way more fun than a GLI.
You hop in the GLI.

There's also a guy too that had,
well there's like two notorious Subaru WRX owners.
One, he would never ever pop his hood.
And he wanted to race everyone.
And he would have nitrous.
That was the only way we,

But anyone, it's like someone got a new car.
He would literally hit them up and be like,
we need a race cause I need to be the fastest.
And tell me that type of dude.
And to be fair, he always won all the time.
So he was like the guy to race.
And then there was the other Subaru WRX guy that he got it.
And at the time, I want to see, it was like a Hawkeye,
but it was like new.
It was like a newer WRX.
And he had just a couple of things done to it.
He wanted to race everyone, always.

He'd go 90 miles an hour in town to catch up to you
so he could race you.
And, but he lost every single time.
He would always want to race everyone in town.
And he didn't give up, huh?
No, no, I'm going to win one of these.
Yeah, I always wanted to race all the time, never.
At least he has some dedication.
I think it blew up.
Oh yeah, it checks out.
I think there was a, it was eventually,
it was our senior year, one of my classmates.
He ended up getting, I think it was a,
I want to say it was like a B8 Audi.
Oh yeah.
And so it was like all wheel drive and everything.
Was it the A4s?
Were they turbo charged?
Yeah, you can get the two later turbo.
S4s were super charged.
So I think he had like, I think it was an A4,
but it was still like really nice.
It was nicer than anything else in the parking lot.
I remember that was a really big deal.
And then I remember one of my other classmates,
his dad, and I'm getting a Boxster.
Ooh.
And so like he would always bring it like school.
And everyone's like, oh my God, it's a fucking Porsche.
It's a Porsche.
But even then, it was like,
the Boxster, and it was like the 996 Boxster.
So it was like the really ugly duckling.
Yeah.
I think they're cool.
So it was just funny because like,
everyone was like, oh my God, it's a fucking Porsche.
And it's like your dad's truck that you just brought,
like drove to school today is like twice as much worth.
It was like that Boxster is like 17K.
Like, it was just really funny.
That car was fun though.
Like he'd take us for rides in it all the time.
I'm like, this car is pretty fun.
Yep.
I remember when Freddie, our senior year, got a 4G Eclipse.
And that was big news.
From what I can remember too, like Freddie was a super
nice guy and everything, but he wasn't really into cars
that much or anything.
It was just like, I feel like he saw it and was like,
that's a nice car.
I'm gonna get that.
But it was like, all of us at work,
our enthusiasts were freaking jealous
because it was like brand new, you know?
Like those 4Gs, and they're nothing crazy.
Now you look at them, nobody even bats.
I've got a lot of hate.
I feel like.
They did, but I don't think they deserve it.
But I'm also biased because I played,
if you guys are familiar with the game Dirt 2,
that game had a rally version of the 4G.
That's wild.
And it was extremely wild.
Yeah, yeah.
And I thought it was the coolest looking car
in the game.
And so since that point, I've just really liked the 4Gs.
I think 4Gs are good looking cars.
Yeah.
I think they are.
I remember really wanting one.
They're round.
And they're super round.
High school, I remember really wanting.
Because I had the 2G.
And it was the same thing.
It was like, OK, I got this car down.
But it's like, oh, it's kind of a pain in the ass.
There's a lot of stuff that it needs yet.
And it's older.
And then we would go up snowboarding up in the UP
pretty much every weekend during the winter.
And I remember there was a 4G for sale.
And we would pass it every time.
And I'm like, I fucking want that.
I want that.
Because it was silver, just like my 2G was.
I'm like, that's literally the next step.
The thing that I like about the 4G for some reason,
I don't know why, but the taillights,
they have this little plastic part inside of the taillight
that extends.
It's right in the center.
I'm trying to think.
It kind of extends backwards.
It has little legs that hold it in place.
And it just looks really unique and kind of futuristic.
And as a kid when I was playing Dirt 2,
I'd see those taillights.
And I just thought it looked so futuristic.
I think that's what got me into it.
I can picture the 4G.
But I also can't.
Yeah.
I remember there was a Domino's driver
that had a matte black 3G Eclipse spider.
And I thought that was the coolest fucking shit.
I like the 3Gs.
I still can't get over the slits on the side.
Yeah, that's the grossest thing ever.
The slits on the side kill it for me.
Also, the fender arches on those are fucking massive.
They're huge.
So it's really hard to get good fitment on them,
I feel like, because you can get good fitment
to the top of the arch, but then the front to back spacing
on it.
You need to run 20-inch wheels, it seems,
because they're so fucking huge.
I don't like those indents on the lower part of the car.
They grew on me a little bit.
It's kind of nostalgic now.
I just say it's nostalgic.
I like them.
It's interesting to me about those slits
is that the first R35s had those.
And I don't think it looks good on the R35 either.
But obviously, the R35 is a great looking car overall.
It's kind of sick.
I have a soft spot for him, too.
And the reason I have a soft spot for him
is we went to a car meet or car show in Annago
when I was in college.
And there was a guy that showed up.
He's an older guy, I say that, but at the time,
he's probably like in his 30s.
But there was a 3G there and a silver.
And it had a meaty fitment on it.
I was like, damn, what's going on with that?
I walked over and it was a cage.
And I had a crazy dash going on.
And it had a big intake scoop in the front bumper.
And then in the back, he had three huge bottles of nitrous.
And so it was the V6 3G.
But it was his drag build.
He would drag race it.
Dude, it looked really fucking cool.
I just thought it was so sick.
He had these giant bottles of NOS in it.
Because I think it was my first time actually
seeing a car with nitrous.
I was like, that's real?
People actually do that?
The three bottles is pretty gnarly.
And they were huge.
I've never paid any attention to 3Gs for some reason.
Yeah, I like them.
If I'd honestly scoop one up for a good deal, I would.
Yeah, I think they're kind of neat.
I kind of like them.
After just looking them up to, I think I
like the 3G more than the 4G, too.
Whoa, I agree.
That's crazy.
2G better than all of them.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
For weird, quirky clips.
Yeah, I'd say.
I love the first gens.
Yeah, they're cool.
2G's elite.
Yeah, 2G's top.
I would say it goes 2, 3, 1, 4, for me.
I would say 2, 1, 4, 3.
I'll say 2, 3, 4, 1.
I'd say 6, 7.
Those are SUVs.
