lead lap
In a race, the lead lap means the cars that are still running the same lap as the first-place car. If a car is behind by a lap, it means it was passed by the leader.
In racing, the lead lap refers to the lap on which the race leader is currently running. Cars on the lead lap have not been lapped by the leader and are considered to be on the same lap as the race leader.
