What it Feels Like to Quit Le Mans

A Toronto IMSA Corvette team (13 Autosport) recounts a brutal 2026 Le Mans: qualified last, finished last, and learned plenty despite feeling “better prepared.” The turning point came when driver Ori Fadani was battling in traffic and got hit in the second chicane—no obvious damage, but the team later discovered the scrutineering CAN bus went down. To avoid an unknown penalty, they pitted, swapped a rocker panel/timing transponder, and still lost race time. The car was fast—Matt Bell even set one of the quickest laps—yet electronics rules and repair logistics ended their run.
INTC’s Jeff Braun had to do it. Just a few weeks ago, only a few hours into that epic race, with a car still fast and healthy.

24 hours of Le Mans
"We're taping this show a handful of days after the 2026 running of the 24 hours of Le Mans."
Le Mans is a super famous race where cars run for 24 hours straight. It’s more about endurance and strategy—tires, fuel, and not breaking—than just one fast lap.
The 24 Hours of Le Mans is one of the world’s most famous endurance races, run annually in France. Teams race for a full day, swapping drivers and managing fuel, tires, and reliability rather than just chasing outright speed.
IMSA
"Jeff is the competition director for a pro sports car team in IMSA, a Chevy Corvette in GTT."
IMSA is the big U.S. organization that runs major sports-car racing. If a team is in IMSA, they’re racing in that organization’s events and classes.
IMSA is the International Motor Sports Association, the North American organizer behind major sports-car racing series. When someone says a team is in IMSA, it usually means they compete in IMSA’s top sports-car categories and events.
GTT
"Jeff is the competition director for a pro sports car team in IMSA, a Chevy Corvette in GTT."
GTT is a racing category/class. It’s basically how organizers group cars so they compete against other cars that are in the same performance “bucket.”
GTT is a racing class designation used within IMSA-style sports-car competition. It groups cars with similar performance/engineering rules so teams can race competitively without everyone running completely different specs.
Ori Fadani
"Our plan was- This is Ori Fadani. [213.4s] Ori Fadani, team owner, $13 for team owner and driver. [216.8s] Our bronze driver, we started him in the race"
Ori Fadani is the team owner the hosts are talking about. In this story, he’s involved in planning the race strategy for a driver during Le Mans.

Drafting (often called “draft”) is when a car follows closely behind another to reduce aerodynamic drag. That lets the trailing car gain speed on straights, then attempt an overtake before braking into corners.

"and anyway, they going into the second chicane, [253.7s] which is the left-hander. [255.7s] They, Ori passes them on the left-hand side,"
A chicane is a part of the track where you have to make quick, alternating turns to slow down. It’s also a common place to try passing because braking and turning are critical.
A chicane is a sequence of alternating turns designed to slow cars and create a technical passing zone. In endurance racing, chicanes are where drivers often set up overtakes because braking and corner entry are tightly controlled.
live in-car cameras
"We have in-car, many of the cars at Le Mans have live in-car cameras. We were one of them that had that."
These are cameras inside the race car that send video to the team while the race is happening. It lets the crew see what the driver sees so they can judge damage and plan the next move.
Live in-car cameras are onboard video feeds that stream what the driver sees in real time to the team. In endurance racing, that helps spot incidents, confirm damage, and coordinate strategy without waiting for radio updates.
timing and scoring computer
"I have a screen right in front of my timing and scoring computer and my strategy computer"
This is the computer system that keeps track of the race timing—like lap times and where each car is. Teams use it to know exactly what’s happening on track.
The timing and scoring computer is the system that tracks each car’s position, lap times, and race status. Teams use it to monitor performance and make decisions like pit timing and strategy adjustments.

"timing and scoring computer and my strategy computer that I can watch Ori's view all the way around the racetrack."
This is the team’s race-planning computer. It helps them decide what to do next—like when to pit—based on what the race data is saying.
A strategy computer is the team’s decision-support system that helps plan and update the race plan based on timing, fuel/consumables, traffic, and incident information. It’s used to translate what’s happening on track into concrete actions like pit windows and driver instructions.
tire pressures
"Steering straight, watch the tire pressures because he doesn't know if we got like a puncture"
Tire pressures are how much air is in the tires. If a car gets hit, the tire can lose pressure, which can make it handle badly or even fail.
Tire pressures are the inflation levels of the tires, monitored because they strongly affect grip, wear, and ride/handling balance. After contact, a pressure drop can indicate a puncture or damage, and the team needs to know immediately.
puncture
"watch the tire pressures because he doesn't know if we got like a puncture from getting hit or whatever."
A puncture means the tire got damaged and starts losing air. In a race, that can quickly make the car unsafe and slow, so the team watches for it right away.
A puncture is a tire damage event where the tire loses air due to a hole or tear, often from debris or curb contact. In racing, it’s critical because it can quickly ruin grip and may force an immediate pit.
pit stop
"Continue on, don't have to make a pit stop early [346.6s] because the car seems good, all the systems are good."
A pit stop is when the race car pulls into the pit lane so the team can work on it. In endurance racing, doing it early costs time, so teams try to avoid unnecessary stops.
A pit stop is a scheduled (or sometimes unscheduled) stop in the pit lane where the team can service the car—commonly refueling, changing tires, or making repairs. In endurance racing, avoiding an early pit stop can preserve track position and reduce time lost to service.
GM
"I can't remember if it was Ethan, [354.4s] our GM systems engineer. [356.7s] We have a GM powertrain systems guy embedded"
GM is General Motors, the company that makes Chevrolet. They’re talking about GM engineers helping the Corvette team with the car’s engine and drivetrain systems.
GM refers to General Motors, the automaker behind Chevrolet. Here, the segment describes a GM powertrain systems engineer embedded with each Corvette, emphasizing manufacturer-level support for the engine and drivetrain systems during racing.
can bus
"somebody said, we've lost the scrutineering can bus. [370.7s] Yeah, and I'm like, I'm not an electronics guy [374.0s] and those guys are really geeky on that stuff, [377.1s] but I know enough to know what that is, that's really bad. [380.6s] So a can bus is a, think of it as a network"
A can bus is the car’s internal “data network” that connects sensors and computers. If the scrutineering can bus is lost, it can mean the race officials can’t read the car’s required electronic data, which is a big problem in competition.
A can bus (Controller Area Network bus) is an in-car communication network that lets electronic control units and sensors talk to each other. In a race car, losing the scrutineering can bus means the officials’ required data/monitoring link may be unavailable, which can trigger serious compliance or safety concerns.
ACO
"One of them is a scrutineering network, [404.1s] which is the organizers, IMSO or in this case, the ACO"
ACO is the organization behind Le Mans. They use official monitoring systems to make sure teams follow the rules during the race.
The ACO (Automobile Club de l’Ouest) is the French organization that governs the 24 Hours of Le Mans and related endurance racing. They use scrutineering and telemetry to monitor compliance with rules like torque limits and tire-pressure minimums.
IMSO
"One of them is a scrutineering network, [404.1s] which is the organizers, IMSO or in this case, the ACO"
IMSA is a big racing organization that runs endurance racing series. They help set the rules and oversee how teams comply, including using data from the cars.
IMSA is the North American sports-car racing organization that runs series like IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. In endurance racing, series organizers coordinate rules and compliance systems such as Balance of Performance and telemetry monitoring.
telemetry
"require us to send back information about the car [412.8s] to them via telemetry live"
Telemetry is data the race car sends to officials while it’s running. It helps them check that the car is staying within the rules.
Telemetry is the live stream of vehicle data sent from the race car to officials. In endurance racing, it lets organizers monitor things like power/torque usage and tire pressures in real time to enforce the rules.
balance of performance
"Back in the old days for balance of performance, [421.8s] we used to have restrictors and things like that"
Balance of Performance is how race organizers try to make different cars compete more evenly. They use rule limits and measurements so no one car is too strong.
Balance of Performance (BoP) is a set of rule adjustments designed to equalize different cars’ competitiveness. Instead of relying on pure engineering parity, organizers use limits and monitoring (like restrictors historically, and torque limits now) to keep racing close.
restrictors
"Back in the old days for balance of performance, [421.8s] we used to have restrictors and things like that"
Restrictors are like a choke point that limits how much air (and therefore power) an engine can use. Organizers used them to keep cars from being too fast compared to others.
Restrictors are intake or airflow limitations used to cap how much power an engine can make. In BoP, they were historically used so cars with different engines could be brought closer in performance by limiting power output.
torque sensors on the axles
"Now we have torque sensors on the axles [430.2s] and they don't care how we make the power,"
These sensors measure how much twisting force the car’s drive system is putting down. Officials can then tell if the car is exceeding the allowed limit.
Torque sensors on the axles measure how much twisting force the drivetrain is producing. Using axle torque data lets officials enforce a torque limit directly, regardless of the engine’s specific power-making method.
torque limit
"we have a torque limit that we're allowed to use. [441.5s] And if we exceed that torque limit, we get a penalty."
A torque limit is the maximum amount of “pulling force” the car is allowed to generate. If you go over it, the race officials can penalize you.
A torque limit is a rules-based cap on the maximum twisting force the car is allowed to produce. If the car exceeds the limit, officials can apply penalties because the limit is measured via telemetry (in this case, axle torque sensors).
black flag
"And we know that's illegal to run that way. [490.1s] We don't know if we're gonna get a black flag [492.5s] in eight seconds or eight laps, but it's common."
A black flag is an official warning that something is wrong with your car or your driving. It usually means you need to come in and deal with the problem right away.
A black flag is a race penalty signal telling a driver to stop complying with the rules and report to officials, usually due to a serious infraction. The host’s uncertainty about when it would be issued highlights how officials react to rule violations detected via telemetry.
60 second penalty
"So we were, I think about two laps from already pitting [501.5s] and we're decided that rather than draw a penalty, [504.8s] because we didn't know if it was gonna be stop and fix it [507.9s] or stop and get a 60 second penalty"
A 60-second penalty is basically a punishment measured in time. You have to stop for a full minute (or your race time gets adjusted) because of a rules issue.
A 60-second penalty is a time-based sanction added to a team’s race time, typically served by stopping in the pits for the specified duration. In this scenario, the team is deciding whether to pit immediately to avoid being judged as running illegally while the data system is down.
timing transponder
"And they think what happened was the timing transponder. So the cars have little electronic boxes that when it drives over these lines that are embedded in the track, it starts your lap time and ends your lap time."
It’s a small electronic box on the race car that helps the track measure your driving. As the car passes over sensors in the road, it records things like lap time and split times so officials can track results.
A timing transponder is an electronic device mounted on the race car that communicates with track timing equipment. When the car passes over timing lines embedded in the circuit, the transponder helps record lap time and sector times, then sends that data back to the race organizers.

"it starts your lap time and ends your lap time. And it does sector times and everything else."
A track is divided into sections, and the timing system measures how long you take through each section. That way you can tell which part of the lap is fast or slow.
Sector times are split times for predefined sections of a circuit. Instead of timing only the full lap, timing systems break the lap into sectors so teams and organizers can see where a car is gaining or losing time.
network
"and it had like pulled the wires out of the network and stopped the communication in the whole network."
Here, “network” means the car’s electronic communication system—how the computer and sensors talk to each other. If wiring gets damaged, the car may lose signals and stop working correctly.
In modern race cars, a “network” refers to the car’s interconnected electronics (ECU and sensors/actuators) communicating over data links. If wires are pulled and communication stops, the car can lose critical control and telemetry functions, forcing troubleshooting and repairs.
rocker panel
"we have a spare rocker panel with a timing transponder in there, but it's a long job to change. It's a major body panel that you don't normally change."
The rocker panel is the metal piece along the bottom side of the car, running under the doors. If it gets damaged, it’s a big job to replace because you often have to take off parts of the interior/floor to get to it.
A rocker panel is the body panel along the lower side of the car, between the doors and the floor. In endurance racing damage, it can be hard to replace because it’s structural and often requires removing interior and floor sections to access mounting points.
race lap
"but Matt set one of the fastest, I think it might've been the third fastest race lap in the whole class during that time."
A race lap means the car drives all the way around the track once. In long races, teams look at lap times to see how fast the car is and how consistently it can do that.
A race lap is one complete circuit of the track. In endurance racing, teams often compare lap times across the same class to judge pace and consistency over long stints.
gas
"So we came in, put gas in it like you do, put it back in the garage, took the old rocker panel off,"
In this context, 'gas' means refueling during a pit stop. They add fuel so the car can keep running for the next part of the race.
In endurance racing, 'put gas in it' refers to a pit stop fuel service where the team refuels the car to extend the stint. Fueling is tightly managed because it affects weight, balance, and how long the car can run before the next stop.
making up laps in endurance racing
"Even in an IMSA race at Daytona, [771.8s] you're not gonna make up 10 laps, [773.9s] but you could with enough yellows ... [810.0s] there's no opportunity to get your lap back at Le Mans."
In long races, whether you can “catch up” depends on how cautions work and how lapped cars are handled. This segment compares two rule sets and shows why one makes lap recovery much harder.

final wave buys
"because the rules are such that they do pass arounds [783.9s] and final wave buys and there's things IMSA wants [786.9s] as many cars on the lead lap as possible."
Final wave buys are a race procedure that lets teams use a planned caution/strategy moment to pit and get back into the race. The rules are set up so more cars can end up on the lead lap.
Final wave buys are a specific endurance-racing procedure where teams can use a caution/strategy window to pit and rejoin in a way that affects lap status. It’s designed to manage field order and maximize the number of cars on the lead lap.
full course yellows
"They do these full course yellows, [795.5s] which are like if any people have watched Formula One, [799.8s] it's like the virtual safety car"
A full course yellow is when the race is slowed down everywhere on the track for safety. Everyone has to drive carefully and keep their distance until the race restarts.
Full course yellows are a race control period where the entire track is under caution, so all cars slow down and drivers must maintain safe spacing. The goal is to neutralize the race without letting cars bunch up or race at full speed.
virtual safety car
"it's like the virtual safety car [802.1s] where it just everybody slows down [803.7s] and you maintain the gap and then you go again."
A virtual safety car is like a caution period where cars slow down, but there isn’t a real safety car driving around. Drivers keep their spacing until the race goes back to normal.
A virtual safety car is a race procedure where cars slow down under caution without a physical safety car on track. Drivers maintain their positions and gaps, and racing resumes when the procedure ends.
sets of tires
"we're gonna burn up 12 more sets of tires at $5,000 a set or $1,000 a set."
A tire set means a full set of tires the team uses together. In long races, tires wear out, so teams count how many sets they’ll need to plan speed and pit stops.
A “set of tires” is a complete tire package used for a stint or phase of the race (typically four tires). Endurance teams track tire sets closely because tire wear affects speed, grip, and how often the car must come in.
million dollar race car
"We're gonna burn all this gas, we're gonna risk this million dollar race car going, we're going 180 miles an hour"
This phrase highlights that the car is an expensive purpose-built endurance prototype or race-spec machine. At that cost, teams treat testing and extra track time as a major risk because crashes, mechanical failures, and wear can be extremely costly.
setup stuff
"So we could go out and try some things and make some pit stops and try some setup stuff and do that."
Car setup is how the team adjusts the car to match the track. It can include suspension and tire settings so the car handles better and the tires last longer.
“Setup” refers to tuning the car’s configuration for a specific track and conditions—things like suspension settings, tire pressures, and aerodynamic balance. “Setup stuff” here means testing those adjustments to improve lap time and tire life.
BOP
"Problem is, we don't know what the BOP is gonna be next year. So are we testing something relevant, the power we have, the weight we have for next year"
BOP is a set of race rules meant to keep different cars on a more even playing field. It can change things like how heavy the car is or how much power it’s allowed to make.
BOP stands for Balance of Performance. In endurance racing, it’s a rule set that adjusts things like weight and engine/boost limits so different cars can compete more evenly rather than one design dominating.
scrutineering
"So, once we put the new rocker panel on it and the scrutineering can bus came to life and everything was good, we sent Matt back out to verify everything was working."
Scrutineering is the pre-race inspection by officials to make sure the car is legal and safe. Think of it like a technical check before the race starts.
Scrutineering is the official inspection process before a race where officials verify the car meets rules and safety requirements. Teams often use it as a checkpoint for both compliance and basic system health before the car is allowed to compete.
race control
"You, like Imsa does, every team is connected to race control through an instant messaging system. Some of them, they're various ones. But anyway, when you type into race control,"
Race control is like the official command center for the race. It watches what’s happening and tells teams what to do, and teams message them during the event.
“Race control” is the centralized command center that monitors the race and coordinates official decisions. Teams communicate with it during the event to request actions, report status, and receive instructions.
instant messaging system
"You, like Imsa does, every team is connected to race control through an instant messaging system. Some of them, they're various ones."
Teams use a real-time messaging system to talk to race officials while the race is running. It helps them coordinate fast decisions without waiting around.
In modern endurance racing, teams use an official instant messaging system to communicate with race control in real time. It’s how teams coordinate timing-critical requests like retiring a car or changing plans.
retiring the car
"we're planning on retiring the car this next lap. And there's no problem with that. They can't say no or whatever."
“Retiring the car” means the team stops the car from continuing in the race. They do it officially through race officials, then the car is taken out of action.
“Retiring the car” means officially withdrawing the car from the race, usually because it’s too damaged or not competitive enough to continue. In endurance events, this is handled through race control and then executed in the garage area.

"Come in the garage and once you close that garage door, they call it the shutter, but it's a garage door. Once you roll that garage door closed, you're out."
At Le Mans, there’s a specific garage procedure. When the team closes the garage door, it signals the car is no longer racing.
In Le Mans-style pit/garage procedures, closing the garage door is part of the official process to take the car out of racing. Once the door is shut, the car is considered withdrawn for that session.
race director's messages
"the organizers, normally when there's some kind of contact or incident, you'll see coming up on the race director's messages,"
During a race, officials send out updates to teams. These messages can include warnings or instructions when something happens on track.
Race director's messages are official communications sent during a race to teams and officials. They typically report incidents, safety-car-related instructions, and other regulatory notes that affect how teams should behave on track.
under investigation
"they'll say contact between cars 13, and I don't remember what number it was, 87, under investigation, you can even see it in Formula One,"
“Under investigation” means officials are reviewing an on-track incident. They check what happened and decide if someone should get a penalty.
“Under investigation” is a race-official status used when stewards review an incident for possible penalties. It means the event is being checked (often with video) to determine whether rules were broken and what action, if any, should be taken.
stewards
"and the stewards will go back and look at the video"
Stewards are the officials who judge what happened during the race. They review incidents and decide if penalties are needed.
Stewards are the officials who review race incidents and apply the sporting rules. After an incident is flagged (often as “under investigation”), stewards review evidence—commonly video—and decide on penalties or no action.

"and try to come up with it, [1339.4s] if there's any penalties to be given out. [1342.0s] It didn't even come up as under investigation"
In races like Le Mans, officials can punish drivers for breaking rules. That punishment is usually added as extra time or a position change, and here they’re debating whether this bump should have led to one.
In endurance racing, penalties are official time or position penalties applied for rule violations (like unsafe driving or track limits). The hosts are discussing whether an incident should have triggered a penalty and why it didn’t get investigated.
error in judgment
"and it was, I won't say it was a driving mistake, [1384.8s] because that's like, oh, I got my braking a little long, [1388.6s] a little late or something like that, [1390.1s] this was an error in judgment, he should have been,"
This is basically saying the driver made the wrong call, not that they just messed up a braking point. In other words, they chose to take a risky move when it wasn’t worth it.
“Error in judgment” here means a strategic decision that was technically possible but not appropriate for the race situation. The host contrasts it with a simple driving slip (like braking late) and argues the driver should have backed off once the other car was already clearly ahead.
braking
"because that's like, oh, I got my braking a little long, [1388.6s] a little late or something like that, [1390.1s] this was an error in judgment, he should have been,"
Braking is how the driver slows down before turning. The host is saying this wasn’t just a timing mistake with braking—it was more about whether the move made sense.
Braking refers to how and when a driver slows the car before a corner, including braking point and pedal timing. The host uses it as an example of a “driving mistake” (late or too-long braking) versus the bigger issue of decision-making.
Aragon in Spain
"one of those things was we corrected this year is two weeks before Le Mans, we went to Aragon in Spain and we did a two day test."

Goodyear tire
"We just wanted to learn the Goodyear tire cause we're not used to that."

"This year we bought the whole crew, our car, and we did what I would say a proper test at Aragon for two days."
