A “qualifier” is a timed run used to determine who gets better starting positions for the elimination rounds. You’re trying to post your best numbers so you face an easier path later.

Technical Definition

A “qualifier” is a run in the qualifying rounds that sets up the bracket matchups. Drivers aim for the best elapsed time and reaction time so they earn a better qualifying position.
