qualify
To 'qualify' in racing means to try to get a good starting position for the race. Drivers need to be fast enough to make it onto the list of cars that can race.
In racing, to 'qualify' means to participate in a session that determines the starting positions for the race. Drivers aim to achieve the fastest lap times to secure a better position on the grid. Only the fastest drivers qualify for the race, while others may not make it onto the starting lineup.
