standalone
A standalone is an aftermarket computer that controls the engine. People use it to get more control for performance tuning, but it costs more and takes work to set up correctly.
In diesel performance, a “standalone” usually refers to an aftermarket engine control unit (ECU) that replaces or bypasses the factory computer. It gives tuners more direct control over fueling and boost, but it’s expensive and requires careful setup to get consistent results.
