A Foray into Vintage Racing; Record Volume on BaT
Producer's note: Due to some technical kerfuffles, this week's episode sounds less than ideal. We'll be back to top form in no time!Alex, Randy, Howard, and Zac–the whole crew is back together again! They discuss Randy's first time out in the world of vintage racing versus Howard's lifelong experience; the stellar track food, green ravines, and worryingly fast straights at Road America; pit bikes; catching up with B.S. Levy; the various on-track attitudes (and interpretations of vintage spec) from event to event; the experience of driving in the race car parade from the track to downtown Elkhart Lake; Spotted Cow; the next tracks on the list; exhausted radiators; some notable names they'll be sharing Laguna Seca with this weekend; and great memories from Malibu Grand Prix. The group close out with several recent collections from the site, hard-to-find hardtops, and other watchlist highlights from this very exciting and high-volume time at BaT. A Road America Recap and Watchlist Review
Alex and BaT strategy director Zac discuss the luxuries of bicoastal living; spring in New York City; the eye-opening rust situation for a first-time visitor to the Midwest; a novel way to avoid road tolls; which one is the "villain" of the podcast; and unspoken Wisconsin speed limits. Then, on to the main event: the absoutely stellar time we all had at Road America for our Alumni Gathering at the vintage races in July. Zac finds a way to briefly resurface his favorite car, the Toyota Solara, before they talk about the transformative experience (and innate patriotism) of the traditional Friday night race car parade into Elkhart Lake. The pair wrap up with some of the most interesting cars recently listed on BaT.Links for listings mentioned in this episode:28:23 4,800-Mile 2001 Acura Integra Type R30:11 1993 Honda NSX-R30:21 2010 Alfa Romeo TZ3 Stradale Zagato36:05 F80 M3-Swapped 2015 BMW 328i Sports Wagon 6-Speed37:39 Ex-Gucci 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280SL 4-Speed39:21 50-Years Owned 1951 Vincent Rapide Series C40:17 Ex–Marty Dickerson, 352-Powered 1957 Ford Ranchero41:09 1996 Toyota Mega Cruiser High Roof42:26 Japanese-Market 8-Kilometer 1987 Honda VFR750R RC3042:36 1966 Dodge Charger 426 Hemi 4-Speed43:00 2002 Chevrolet Camaro Coupe B4C Special Service Package45:03 1977 Ferrari 308 GTB45:07 Twin-Supercharged 427-Powered 1986 Ford Mustang GT Hatchback “ProFox” 6-Speed45:16 RoW 1992 Porsche 911 Carrera 2 Coupe 5-Speed45:38 Ardun 296-Powered ’32 Ford Highboy Roadster48:10 1970 Shelby Mustang GT350 FastbackGot suggestions for our next guest from the BaT community or One Year Garage episode? The One-Year Garage: 1997
In this latest installment of our popular One-Year Garage game, Alex, Beck, and podcast newcomer Cameron reveal their favorite cars, trucks, and wild cards of 1997, but not before explaining to young Cam the horrors of the Star Wars prequels he grew up with. Also: Schumacher and Villeneuve; the WALKinshaw Porsche WSC-95 at Le Mans; all three are old enough to be irritated by the vagaries of Google AI; wishful thinking about the availability of a manual transmission in the US-model Volvo 850R; a burnout instead of friendly wave; and a wilder wild card than usual.Links for items discussed in this episode:14:38 Current live listings from 199718:46 Volvo 850R21:47 One of the Rarest and Most Gas-Guzzling Shooting Brakes Can Be Yours25:39 BMW E36 M3/4/529:21 1988 BMW M3 Evolution II30:40 4,800-Mile 2001 Acura Integra Type R33:26 Mr. Bean’s Twice-Wrecked Daily-Driver McLaren F134:12 Triumph Italia35:12 Porsche 993 Turbo Model Page42:46 150-Mile 1993 Ford F-150 SVT Lightning44:52 Toyota Mega Cruiser47:44 Porsche 993 911 Model Page50:36 BMW 850 CSi52:02 Euro 45k-Kilometer 1997 Ferrari 550 Maranello54:18 Porsche 911 GT1 Strassenversion: Road to Track and Back57:28 26-Years-Owned 1997 Aviat Husky A-11:00:38 1997 Honda Accord British Touring CarGot suggestions for our next guest from the BaT community or One Year Garage episode? Revisiting Colin Comer, Adventures in Shelby
Producer's note: Our man Alex is still recovering from our recent gathering in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, and will be back to regularly scheduled programming next week. In the meantime, we've bookended the vintage races at Road America with local legends Peter Cunningham and, today, a revisitation of our entertaining 2024 interview with Shelby impresario and all-around rascal Colin Comer.Randy and Alex sit down with Shelby expert, restorer, journalist, author, and frequent BaT seller Colin Comer. They talk about his first MGB GT leading into the world of "bargain" Ferraris and his ultimate pathway to Shelby collection and expertise; a (literal) run-in with the law as a teenager in a rusty GTV; his hot take on the Cobra Daytona Coupe versus the plain-Jane roadster; sharing a Lister Knobbly with Sam Smith for a thousand miles; telling Keith Martin to stick to sports cars; the pitfalls and history-preserving rewards of being talked into book authorship while driving a 427 Cobra in the snow; buying "plenty" of Bugeye Sprites on the advice of Peter Egan; and important things scrawled on bathroom walls.Links for items discussed in this episode:CC350 BaT Member ProfileTom Cotter's Cobra StoryBaT Exclusive: The Pastor's Bugeye SpriteColin Comer's books available for purchaseThe Comer CollectionColin's Classic AutoGot suggestions for our next guest from the BaT community or One Year Garage episode? The move on to discuss Matt's club racing career, exciting news in upcoming vintage races, interesting cars in the 911r pipeline, the team and effort it takes to operate at the highest levels as a top BaT seller, the beauty of the Local Partner model for those with more cars to sell than time to sell them, the Nailhead-powered '32 Ford coupe of Alex's dreams, unfortunate grounds for a fire extinguisher review, vintage NASCAR for the hobby racer, and the price of (however briefly) feeling like a man.Follow along! Alex interviews Karl Thomson, an accomplished race driver and team owner who, along with his wife Jill, is the co-founder of Compass Collective, a true-blue superstar BaT Local Partner. The Southern California transplant talks the correct length for an Airstream trailer; relives a family trip from Toronto to Acapulco in a diesel Rabbit; rationalizes race cars as quality parenting; describes a race career that spans from a lucky barn find to winning at the biggest tracks in the US; explains what drives a racer out of the driver's seat and into team ownership; says many unprompted nice things about BaT; and details his strategy and methods for presenting cars on the site.Follow along! An Epic Drive Through the Alps
Alex and Randy issue quick non-sequitur opinions on the Dekon Monza and an appealingly basic Fairlane before launching into a recap of the recent Curated Cars & Coffee event in The Netherlands. They then launch into the main event: Randy's subsequent five-country journey through the Alps to Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este on Lake Como in his newly acquired 356A coupe, father (and lucky birthday boy) in tow. It's all there: countless hairpins in the passes, attempts to keep up with a Gullwing, windscreen wiper rationing, a thousand miles in Speedster seats, the Goldfinger Rolls, an impressive Bentley, and a hair-raising sprint to Munich on the Autobahn to cap it all off.Follow along!
