Too Afraid to Ask

E85 is a fuel with a lot more ethanol than regular gas. Only certain cars can use it safely, and it may not go as far because it has less energy per gallon.

Technical Definition

E85 is a higher-ethanol fuel blend (commonly 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline) that’s usually only intended for flex-fuel vehicles. The segment notes it’s often cheaper per gallon, but it can come with tradeoffs like energy content and compatibility.
