Toyota's record 11.3 million global sales and near-empty dealer lots show hybrids absorbing tariff pressure, while China's price war reaches Europe and forces Kia and others into deliberate price cuts even as BYD unveils a 1,000-horsepower production supercar. FTC scrutiny of dealer pricing practices and rising negative equity above $7,000 per trade-in add domestic friction to an industry already absorbing $65 billion in EV write-downs.
FTC Flags 97 Dealers on Pricing Violations as Hidden Fees Reach $1,500
The FTC sent letters to 97 dealers and dealer groups about possible violations of its pricing regulations, with Wrench Nation reporting the agency's expectation that advertised prices include only tax and tags, with no add-on packages or inapplicable rebates buried in the final figure.
Dock fees, which Wrench Nation describes as carrying no actual cost to the dealer, run as high as $1,500 in Florida while California caps them at $85.

#343 FTC Crackdowns : New Car Dealer Rules You Need to Know
"The FTC came out and sent a letter to 97 dealers and dealer groups, suggesting that they may be violating some of the regulations that the FTC has stopped."
On the compliance gap, David Boyce of Team Velocity, a platform serving 2,500 to 3,000 dealerships, noted on the Car Dealership Guy Podcast that most dealer websites post consistent vehicle pricing pages, but specials pages, banner ads, and digital retailing tools frequently show different numbers. My Car Guru Podcast puts the consumer cost of that opacity at up to $10,000 to $15,000 per transaction at dealers Boyce and co-hosts describe as structuring deals for maximum profitability without disclosure.

"Most of your websites we go to today have a nice SRP, nice VDP. They're both disclosed... But the hard part for dealers is how many places they advertise... The specials pages are often totally different, the banners aren't updated dynamically... and then you go to the digital retailing tool and it's oftentimes different."
BYD Shows Production Denza Z Supercar at Beijing; Tesla Roadster Still Has No Delivery Date
BYD unveiled the production Denza Z at the Beijing Auto Show, an all-electric supercar rated at over 1,000 horsepower with a 0-100 km/h time of under two seconds, priced around $65,000 in China and prioritized for European sales.
EV News Daily noted that BYD 'has done what Tesla still can't do, and that's unveil their new Roadster in production form.' The Tesla Roadster, by contrast, has been promised for roughly a decade with no production version in sight, and CarCast observed that Tesla's own messaging now positions it as 'the only Tesla in the long term that you will drive yourself,' assuming it ever arrives.

"The Roadster, if we ever see it, I think that's been promised for about 10 years now, but on the assumption that we eventually see the Roadster, they're saying that's the only Tesla in the long term that you will drive yourself."

Chinese Brands Go Premium in Europe While Kia Cuts Prices to Close the Gap
Chinese automakers are outpacing the rest of the European market, according to Autoline Daily, forcing rivals to respond on price.
Kia's CEO announced a deliberate price-cutting strategy that narrowed the gap with Chinese rivals like BYD from around 20 to 25 percent down to 15 to 20 percent, per EV News Daily.

"Chinese automakers are growing quickly in Europe, far outpacing the rest of the market, so automakers in Europe are cutting prices to try and hold on to market share."
Meanwhile, Xiaomi is opening an R&D center in Munich and has recruited personnel from Mercedes, BMW, Porsche, and Lamborghini, targeting performance cars, vehicle dynamics, and premium design for European consumers.

Toyota Posts Record 11.3 Million Global Sales as Hybrids Reach 40% of Its Mix
Toyota sold nearly 11.3 million vehicles globally, a record, despite absorbing a 15% tariff on Japanese imports, with U.S. sales alone climbing nearly 8% to more than 2.5 million units.
Hybrids now account for nearly 40% of Toyota's worldwide sales, the product mix that absorbed tariff pressure without requiring a full pivot to battery-electric.
"Toyota has a 36 days supply of inventory, can you talk to us about what does day's supply mean? What does 36 days supply mean? ... Yeah, well, that's the average days that a car's on the lot before it's gone. And yeah, that number is so low because of the amount of cars that we sell before they ever hit the lot."
Inventory sits at a 36-day supply, meaning the average vehicle leaves the lot in 36 days, and CarEdge Live notes that many models never reach the lot at all, selling out two to four months before arrival. That demand signal gives Toyota unusual pricing leverage at a moment when most automakers are managing bloated lots and softening transaction prices.

China's EV Retail Share Nears 61% as Automakers Shift from Price Cuts to Product Strategy
China's Passenger Car Association estimates April retail electric vehicle sales at 860,000 units, putting passenger EV penetration at nearly 61%, which would mark a new benchmark for the market.
The charging network behind those vehicles now supports more than 40 million new energy vehicles, with public connectors reaching 21.481 million units by end of March, up 47% year on year.

Nissan Posts 550-Billion-Yen Net Loss Despite Operating Profit Turnaround as Sales Slide 6%
Nissan now expects an operating profit for the fiscal year ended in March, a reversal attributed to tighter cost controls and a favorable exchange rate, but the company still projects a net loss of 550 billion yen with global sales down nearly 6%.
On the product side, Nissan's CEO has confirmed a new Xterra is coming, with TFL Car Chat reporting a target price under $40,000.
"So I actually got to see the new XTERRA. I know, I've heard. Yeah, so there is a new XTERRA coming. It's been confirmed by the CEO and I actually got to see it."
The new Xterra is positioned against the Scout Traveler, Ford Bronco, and Jeep Wrangler at a price point below $40,000.

One in Three Trade-Ins Is Underwater, Average Negative Equity Hits $7,200
Roughly 33% of vehicle trade-ins carry negative equity, meaning the owner owes more than the car is worth, with the average shortfall now at approximately $7,200 according to an Edmunds report cited by Wrench Nation and CarCast.
More than 90% of buyers in that position roll the debt into a new loan financed for 72 months or longer, and 43% of those stretch to 84 months.

"It's just the amounts, I think, that are getting a bit scary, because the amount of negative equity that we had seen in the first quarter was over $7,000."
That structure compounds the risk: a buyer starts a seven-year loan already carrying over $7,000 in debt from a previous vehicle, before interest on the new purchase is factored in.

"Almost 33% of people who trade in a car have owe more on the car than what it's worth. And the average amount today, Edmunds just came out with a report, the average amount of that negative equity is nearly $7,200."
$65 Billion in EV Write-Downs Signals Automaker Retreat from All-Electric Pledges
Global automakers have written off $65 billion due to canceled EV projects or losses on EVs, according to The Intercooler, which described the new-car market as 'a total bloodbath at the moment.' Commitments to go '100% electric by 2030 or 2035' are being quietly reversed across the industry.
Eric Jesse, on Automotive News Daily Drive, outlined one alternative path: smaller automakers targeting hybrid segments where only three to five competitors exist can still hit 60,000 to 100,000 unit sales with far lower capital exposure than a crowded EV market requires.

"If you have a [subcompact] sedan and you have a hybrid, the ability to play there where you're playing against maybe three to five players and still hitting that 100,000 mark — or maybe 80- or 60,000 — because your investments are so much lower, can become really feasible if you have the right starting point."
